Last week in Colorado Springs, the most notable incident was an officer-involved shooting downtown in the early hours of July 5th. Officers responded to reports of a man allegedly carrying a rifle and yelling near the 100 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue. Police surveillance initially could not locate the suspect with a gun, but they did observe a group who continued to argue near a nightclub. Later, one individual from this group matched the description, and surveillance footage showed him retrieving a handgun with an extended magazine from a car. When approached by officers, the man reportedly tried to conceal the gun, was told to put his hands up, briefly complied, but then ran and reached for his waistband. Officers fired, striking the suspect who was later identified as 26-year-old Alex Martinez-Sarmiento. He died at the scene despite medical aid. A Glock 17 was recovered, with an additional Glock 43 later found. No rifle was recovered. This case remains under investigation by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office as required by Colorado law. CSPD is seeking witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at (719) 444-7000.

The Colorado Springs Police Department also continues to caution residents about recent cryptocurrency scams. Multiple cases have been reported involving fraudulent investment opportunities resulting in significant financial losses. These cases are ongoing and CSPD urges anyone encountering suspicious investment schemes to report tips directly via the city’s scam reporting channels.

There is an observed steady presence of disturbances and disputes in downtown nightlife areas, particularly repeated altercations near clubs on East Pikes Peak and adjacent blocks. Law enforcement’s use of real-time surveillance and high visibility patrols continues to be a focal point for deterring violence in those locations.

No other major felonies or homicide cases with active public advisories were reported from official city or police sources for the past week. No property crime waves or residential burglary patterns were highlighted in publicly available releases.

So far, the most significant trend is the repetition of armed disturbances and altercations concentrated in the downtown entertainment corridor after dark. Listeners are reminded to exercise caution in these areas and to cooperate with police during investigations.

Anyone with information about the cases in today’s blotter or with knowledge of ongoing criminal activity in Colorado Springs should call the CSPD non-emergency line at (719) 444-7000 or to provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (719) 634-STOP.
