(00:35):
sus thank the many listeners who haveexpressed their valuable reactions to last week's broadcast,
in which was inaugurated to this ourfirst venture into the fields of musical
experimentations, Your criticisms and comments upontonight's production will be equally valued. The
Columbia Workshop presents Alice in Wonderland. It all started with Alice's curiosity about a

(01:02):
white rabbit who hopped by as sheand her sister sat for the bank of
a street holding mysel the late. Before she knew it, Alice was falling
down what seemed to be a deepwell, at the bottom of which,
among other curious creatures, she meta mouse and a caterpillar. Keep your

(01:42):
temper outside the little house. Inthe middle of a wood, she encountered
a frog dressed in the livery ofa footman. I shall sit here all
in law for dames and dames. And inside the little house a sneezing baby,
a cook, and a very uglyduchess. Speak corrptly through your little

(02:08):
wol boy and keep him when isme? She had rescued the sneezing baby
from the fury of the cook, only to have the baby turn into a
pig, and a moment later acheshire cat had faded into existence on a
limb above her. Wow, whathard l She had not gone much further

(02:49):
before she came upon the house ofthe march Hare. She is sure it
is a right house because the chimneysare shaped like ears, and the roof
is thatched with fur. There wasa table set out under a tree in
front of the house, and themarch Hare and the hatter were having tea
at it. Dor Mouth is sittingbetween them, fast to sleep. The

(03:14):
march Hare and the hatter are usinghim as aquishion, resting their elbows on
him. They aren't at all anxiousto have Alice's company. Plenty of rooms
and I'm going to sit down,sir. What's you warm? I don't

(03:35):
see any wines not here but usjourney's still of you to offer down without
previous margin. I didn't know itwas your table. It lay for a
great many northern your hair wants saywhat the last of a personally lost it?
Why is the wave like writing pleasureby lasts? Want to be fun?

(04:00):
I believe I can guess that oneyou mean, the two things you
can find off the answer to itexact. So when you should say what
you mean, I do mean unlessI mean what I think that's the same
thing. That's the same thing thatfits might get a twelve days that I
see what I eat is the same, and I eat what I see.

(04:23):
What's just as well saying that Ilike what I get to say because I
get what I like my guest aswell, dame, and I read when
I please say, I sleep whenI it is the same thing. For
you must answer it before I forgetit. Now, let me why it

(04:44):
is a good like? I waswriting this a day right today? What's
this? What is two days?Brow? I told you better with you
suit the west? You gonna say, but yes for some cram met done
in as well. You shouldn't haveput it in with the bread knife,

(05:05):
but it was. Let me dipit in the teams tell you that it
says the day of the month anddoes stuff on the pros of you.
Why should it if you're tell youwhat? Of course not. But that's

(05:25):
because it says the same here. But that's a long time together. She's
just the case with mine. Idon't quite understand the commerce speaks again.
Why everything follow you? No?I give that you that's the answer.

(05:48):
I haven't why. I think youmight deciding better with the time than wasting
it in acting with us that haveno answer. If you your time as
well as I do, you wouldtalk about wasting it. And it's him.
I just know what you mean.Of course you though I dare say

(06:10):
you never even spot the time, but I know I had to discount and
that counts. He won't stand beatingnine go and and I borrowed last month
just before he the march here andit was it's a great concert given by

(06:32):
the Queen of part and I haveto sing, tell tree, it turns
that how I wonder what you thatyou know the sounds, but I've had
something like it. It goes on? Is this way all you lie like?

(06:59):
Tee? Not so? SI wayfinished first best when the queen's fall
out. He's marrying the pipe offwith his head. And he said,

(07:21):
ever since said you was a thing? I asked, it's always it's the
clock. Now it's definitely you.So many tea things to put out here?
Yes, that's it, it's alwaystime. There was no time to
wash the things between wild Then youkeep moving around like I don't someone sa

(07:44):
to the next exactly, so asthe things get used up, what happens
when you come to the beginning again? No, take some mon I've had
nothing yet, so I can't takemore. Mean you can't take less.
And it's basy to take more andnothing. Nobody asked your opinion, woo,
making her from off. Now Iwant a clean let's move up one

(08:07):
place. But then you're the onlyone who gets the clean place. And
I had to sit by the marchhere, said and he's us set the
milkja a little place. We moveonly one feet over. And if you
don't like that. Yes, thispiece of rudeness was more than Alice could

(08:28):
bear. She got up in greatdisgust and walked off the dormouse, fell
asleep instantly, and neither of theothers took the least notice of her going,
or they are now trying to shovethe dormouse into the key pith.
As Alice wandered on through the wood, she came suddenly upon a tree with

(08:50):
a little door leading right into it. She was not in the least surprise,
but she had come to expect anythingin Wonderland, so she quickly opened
the door and entered to find herselfat last among the bright flower beds in
the cool fountains of a beautiful garden, the one she had first seen through
the little door in the hall. She had scarce the time to look about

(09:11):
her when she heard the sounds ofa procession approaching. It was the royal
entourage of the King and Queen ofHearts, accompanied by their guests, the
Kings and Queens of diamonds, spadesand clubs, with their soldiers and courtiers.

(09:33):
When the procession came opposite to Alice, it stopped and everybody looked at
her, as the Queen of Heartsspoke, who is this? How did
she get here? Be told? What's your name? My name is Alice?
What is your not? To see? Alice, only of cards or

(09:56):
yours? I mean to be afraidof it. She has no business being
Alice off with her head, offwith her Oh, consider, dear,
this is on the Chile. Shehad a head chee yes on with the

(10:18):
procession for the present Chiles. Youmay keep your head. That's just any
time, have you. The processioncontinued through the fountains in the center of

(10:39):
the garden, while Alice looked abouther vainly for some way of escape,
but the green kept constantly by herside. Have you seen them off turtles
yet? No? I don't didn'tknow what the mock turtle did that thing.
Mock turtles too is made from Inever saw ahead of them. Come
on, and he still tells youwith his story. After a little walk,

(11:09):
the Queen and Alys came upon agriffin lying fast asleep in the sun.
If you don't know what a griffinis, there's very little use in
telling you, or you wouldn't believeit anyway. He is sort of half
the lion, half eager, half. I knew you wouldn't believe it,

(11:35):
lady, And take this young ladyto see the more pert and take here
his story. I must go backand see after some executions, what fan
what is the time? Why sheit's all her fancy that they never execute

(11:56):
nobody, you know. They hadnot gone far before they saw the mock
turtle in the distance, sitting sadand lonely on a little ledge of rock.
And as they came nearer, Alicecould hear him sighing, as if

(12:18):
his heart would break. She pittedhim deeply. Oh what is his sorrow?
It's all its fancy. Then hehasn't got no sorrow, you know.
And dizzy lady, if he wantsfor to know your history, she
do, I'll tell her. Sitout both of you, and don't speak

(12:45):
of wortilize with me. I don'tsee how he can us begin what I
was a real turcle when we werelooking. We went to school in the

(13:07):
sea. The master was an oldturtle. We used to call him taughting.
Why did you call him promise? We called him daughters because he daughtn't
really your very so he ought tobe ashamed of yourself for asking such a

(13:28):
simple question. Drive on, oldfellow, don't be your day about him.
We went to school in the sea, so you may have believed it.
You did your time. We hadthe best of legumcation. In fact,

(13:50):
we went to school every day, really and rising as the beginning,
and then the different branches of arithmeticand visiouses ulfication as well. There was

(14:16):
misery, literally ancient and modern, with geography, then drawling. The drawling
Master was an old congareal that usedto come once a week. He thought
of drawling, stretching and fainting incoils. What matter? Well, I

(14:41):
can't show it to you by myself. I'm stiff. And the griffin never
learnt this ahead of time. Iwent to the classical master, though that
he wasn't old crabit he was.I never went to him, he thought,
laughing. And and on other day? Did you do lessons? Un?

(15:18):
Ten hours? The first stay niceand a joy agn That's the reason
they are called lessons, because theylessons from day to day. Then did
you leven day? It must havebeen a holiday, of course it was.
And how did you manage on thetwelve? That's enough about lessons?

(15:41):
To tell her something about the game. Now, oh, most of guys,
really is you must all right? You may not have lived much under
the sea, and perhaps you willnever even introduced to a love. I

(16:04):
never never, so you can haveno idea what a delightful thing a lobster
quad? Really, no insteed, why you'll first form into a line along
the sea shore, two lines, see turtle, salmon, and so on.

(16:27):
Then when you cleared all the jellousisyout of the way, that generally
takes some time. You advanced twice. Partner, of course, advanced twice,
said to bathers, change lopster, and retire same order. Then you
know you throw it again, thechange take a line again. That's all

(16:55):
them first, because the other's gooda dance. Would you like to see
a little love o dang much?Indeed the colic sy the first big a
griffin. We can do it withoutthe loves this you know which you see

(17:17):
you sing? I forgotten the word. So they began solemnly dancing around and
round Alice every now and then, treading on her toes when they passed too
close, and waving their forefall tomark the time, while the muckt sang

(17:37):
because it was fast snow. Apoor fools behind the sand all how he

(18:00):
need the lobsters at the time ofall sail, waiting on the single command
join more, Will you walk? You will you? Won't you will you

(18:22):
join with you? Won't you withyou? Want you will join the thank

(18:45):
you it's a day interesting downs towatch, and I do so like a
joyous song about the fighting. Butif I think I have said to the
problem xactly, we don't want youwith us, they were obliga have him
with them. No wise this wouldgo anywhere without a purpose. Of course,

(19:07):
Why if this came to me andtold me he was going on the
journey, I just say, withwhat purpose? Oh, don't mean happens?
I mean what I said. Shallwe try another figure of the lobster
quadria? Or would you like memock turtle to sing you another song?

(19:29):
Oh? If the mock turtle wouldit so hard and no accounting for taste?
And singer turtle soup? Will youold fella beautiful soup? Tim agree?
Wor wants cam on it's sand togo to the trial? What sire?

(20:07):
Ammon? Ammon and the Griffin grabbedAlice by the hand and hurried her
off without waiting for the end ofthe mock tentle song. By the time
Alice and the Griffin had arrived atthe court room, a great crowded assembled
there, all sorts of little birdsand beasts, as well as the whole
pack of cards. The knaves stoodbefore the court in chains. The white

(20:30):
rabbit, dressed in the livery ofa herald, was near the throne where
the King and Queen of Hearts wassitting. The king is also the judge,
by the way, and as heis wearing his crown over his wig,
he does not look at all comfortable, and it certainly isn't becoming.
In the very middle of the court, on a table was a large dish

(20:51):
of carts. It made Alice hungryto look at him. I wish will
get the trials on who runs onto the freshire hands of that them?
Part is what the trial is allabout. What the Jews w is on
the flat for they can't get anythingto put down you. They're writing down

(21:11):
their names for fear their shall forgetthem before the end of the trial.
To things. They're all writing stupidthings on flace, and look sn't can't
sell it correct. Silence in thecorn. The harolds are the accusations,

(21:41):
the part, the part, anda snow day the party consider over the
joy, Not yet, because thebrails on the border. Oh all right,
call the first chics first with thehubble, sometimes called man, what

(22:11):
your majesty really might beee and breakyou bother with me, but I had
to quite an instrant I was sentfor. Were you you were also finished?
And when did you begin? Fourteenthof March? I think it for
existence? Oh, write that doll. The jury is writing down all three

(22:33):
dates on their slates. Now theyadd them up, and now they're reducing
the answer to shillings and pence.Only all the answers are different. Just
at this moment, Alice felt avery curious sensation, which she recognized at
once she was beginning to grow again. She decided, however, to remain

(22:56):
in the courtroom as long as therewas room for her. However, the
dormouse who was sitting next to herobjected at once, I wish you wouldn't
squeeze so I can hardly breathe.I can't help this. I'm screwed.
You've got no right to glow here. You tet nonsense. You're going to

(23:21):
yes, But I grow in areasonable way, not that ridiculous fashion.
The happy is so nervous under thegaze of the queens that he shakes himself
out to folk be shoes, andin his confusion, he bites the large
piece out of his speacup instead ofhis bread and butter. I'm the poor

(23:45):
man. You're a very poor speaker. I as well have your executed on
the bottle free in that station, just for your ancle and set his head

(24:06):
off outside. Oh yeah, he'shid all expis. Well, what do
you know about? Is then?Nothing? Nothing for him? Nothing?
Not Ever, that's very important, important, unimportant. The course, I

(24:30):
meant that the important unimportant, butsome of the jury like important and some
unimportant. But it doesn't really nothingsailon. I read from the rule rule

(24:52):
of the forty two. All personsare than a mile high, believe the
court nothing. Oh oh, ifyou are nearly two miles well, I
shall go at any day to say. That's not a reason the rule you
it's it's the oldest rule in thebook. Yes, it ought to be

(25:15):
number one. Consider all over thelectories. You're not This paper has not
stop what you have again, butit lets it by the president to walk
to somebody. It must have beenthat unless it was written to nobody,

(25:37):
which is at the rest of itall. If there's nothing that on the
outside, it's another. After all, if the set of persons the pregnant
and they're not fool must have somebodyelse prove their It doesn't prove anything in

(26:02):
the sat Why you don't even knowwhat the version all about? The reason
I did just see begin anywhere andstopped when he dies. She gave me
a good part again, but saidI could not swim. He said the

(26:25):
word I had not gone. Weknew it to be true if she should
push the latter off, what wouldbecome of you? I gave her one.
They gave him too. You gaveus king your door. They all
returned to come in for you,So they were bound before. I think
that. I just think, ooh, that's the most important piece of evidence

(26:48):
we've heard yet. No, nowthat's the Jornica. I don't believe that
ever of me in it. Oh, if there's no meaning in it,
Alice, that says a world ofproblem in her it. And we needn't
God find any everything? Ah?Yes, I don't know. I mean

(27:11):
to find there some meaning here.Said I could not swim, Well,
you can't swim anything. Do Ilook like him? He certainly doesn't,
being made entirely a card board.Oh all right, so far, no
continue, and we know it tobe true that the jury, of course,

(27:36):
if she should push the method on, Oh, that Emusphy the queen,
What would become of you? Yes? What? Indeed I gave her
one? They gave him twols. That must be what he did with the
touching her. I didn't go on. They all regain fellow. Then to

(28:00):
you, well, well there theyare, and so they are. The
times are on the table. Nothingcan be clearer than that. Eh No,
Then again, and before she hadthis pitch, Well you never had

(28:21):
pitch, did you might discons younever hope with somebody's everybody in hatress.
Then the world don't pick you owl. That's a ton, Thank you,
thank you, let's joy considered ever, No, no dy cop and monsense

(28:48):
the idea of the seventh SI holdyour co off with all health, But
nobody moves for Alice, who isnow her full size and much too large
for him to try to do anythingabout it. Hands up, dumping the
jury back in his accupent funds withthe court room floor. O, p

(29:10):
you're nothing the heart, oh no, nothing in the air and flying down
upon us. She gave him ascream, half of fright, half of
anger, and tried to beat themoff. Then she found herself lying on
the banks with her head in thelap of her sister, who was gently
brushing away some dead leaves that hadfluttered down from the trees upon her face.

(29:37):
Hey Dodds, what a long meetingher? Oh yes, I've heard
that A song of me all aboutus, A fright and the mock crable,
and the mad hats and the Queenof Heart and a horse. And

(30:00):
so ends the Columbia Workshops dramatization ofAlice in Wonderland. Alice is played by
Helen Claire Windim and Ropes and adaptedand director of the production, Lee Stephens
and Paul Sartt wrote the original musicalscore, and mister Stephens conducted the orchestra
