(00:03):
The Columbia Workshop tonight in presenting thesecond part of its radio abstraction at Lewis
Carroll's statasa, Alice's Adventures through theLooking Glass. The Columbia Workshop continues an

(00:26):
experiment for gun last autumn, wehave presented Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. These
classics are being broadcast in an effortto determine just how far a music can
substitute for sound effects. In tonight'spresentation, as was the case last week,
Paul, sound effects are executed byorchestral instruments and are a part of
the musical score, especially written forthe broadcast by let Stephens and Paul Sarah.

(00:51):
The Columbia Workshop wants to know howsuccessful this experimental broadcast has been.
We welcome your comments, suggestions, and the Columbia Workshop presents Through the Looking
Glass. Alice had been playing Let'sPretend again, and while she was pretending

(01:23):
that the black Kitten was really theRed Queen in her chest set, and
that she really could get through themirror in the looking glasshouse, it happened,
and she found herself walking through thelooking glass and out into a lovely
garden where the flowers talked and whereshe met the Red Queen, who instructed

(01:46):
her how to travel across the landthat looks like a chest. Boy,
you go very quickly through the thirdsquare by real way I should dk,
and you'll find yourself in the foursquare in no time were That square belongs
to tween the sweet it out.The gift is mostly water, the stick
belongs to how to dumpty. Theseven is all pish, But the white

(02:07):
Knight was thrown the way, andin the eighth square we shall all be
queens, and it's all seastick andfast. So Alice ran down the hill,
jumped a little brooks and found herselfin a railway station. No sooner
had the train pull it out,and it jumped too, And Alice was
in the fourth square with tweetl dumband tweetled thee out down that way,

(02:31):
don't day every now half a bathof part way, don't up way,
don't day as fast night, norap down the fastra roll black and front
Farfarero, which brightened both like nearrosand white four war and the monster's crow

(02:57):
dipped right in the heroes, andpoor Alice was left all alone hiding under
a tree. But the great birdwent flying by its wings, kicking up
a hurricane, which blew some oneshawl white cash down. Alice caught it,
and while she was looking for theowner, the White Queen came running
along. I'm stretched out, why, very sure? Very sure? Then?

(03:22):
May I help you put it on? Your majesty? I am addressing
the white queen. Are that well? Yes? If you call that a
dressing, isn't my notion? Everything at all? Here? Let me
do it? Have you picked me? Now? I haven't picked it yet.

(03:43):
Soon I shall all can be likestuff to do it when I find
it my shawl. The brooch wascoming under rifts another What did I tell
you? It's opening? I care? You're holding it all crooked and there
it's frick mes. You know that'sall for the plea. But why don't
you scream? Now? Why?I don't know, was screaming already.

(04:04):
But that's all backwards. Just youshould fit your finger and then scream yourself.
Let's stilling, I should fall thatway backwards. Well, in any
case, I hope nothing is betternow, no much better better. Alice
looked at the White queen in astonishment. Then she rubbed her eyes and looked

(04:27):
again. She was in a littledark shop, leaning with her elbows on
the counter, and opposite her wasan old sheep sitting in an arm chair
knitting. And every now and they'releading off to look at her, to
a great pair of spectacles in thesize you're holding everybody, Why there's no
one else here with me? Yousee? What do you want about?

(04:54):
Do you have any eggs? Howdo you sell them? To the count?
An experience of money? How muchare they starting for? Wye?
The two are deeper than that.Only you must take them both if you
buy door? Oh, and thenI have one please for I mind lightning.

(05:18):
You know, here's your money, but there's my eggs. Oh.
I never put things into people's canthat would never do. You must get
it for yourself. If you're noton a shelf at the back of the
door, I wonder why it wouldn'tdo. Goodness, The eggs seems to

(05:40):
get further away the more I walkedhardy, And it's so dark that here
on this must be a chair.I'm running into us, but I declare
it God franchies. How odd tofind trees growing in a shop. And
actually here's a little cook we have. This is the queerest shop I ever

(06:01):
thought. So she went on wonderingmore and more at every step, and
everything turned into a tree the momentshe came up to it, and she
quite expected the egg to do thesame. However, the egg only got
larger and larger and more and morehuman. When she'd come within a few

(06:25):
yards of it, she saw thatit had eyes and the nose and mouth.
And when she'd come quite close toit, she saw clearly that it
was Humpty Dumpty himself. It can'tsee anybody else sitting there on the wash
and sidle like a egg. It'svery provoking to be called an egg,
very I said, you look likean egg sirt and some eggs of this.

(06:49):
Some people have no more sense thana baby. State your name,
address, and occupation. My nameis it's a stupid name. Enough,
What does it mean? Means something? Of course it must. My name
means the shape I am, anda good handsome shape. It is,
too the name like yours. Itmight be any shape. Foremost there's gloryfoil.

(07:11):
I don't know what you mean byglory, of course you don't till
I tell you. I mean, there's a nice knockdown argument for you.
But glory does mean a nice knockdownargument. When I use a word that
means just what I choose it tomean, nothing more nor less. The
question is whether you can make wordsmean so many different things? Question is
which is to be master? That'sall? For instance, would you like

(07:35):
to hear a song in which wordsreally work over time? Oh? Yes,
indeed was really, and the whitingdid guy and gimbol in the wave

(07:57):
o the burl fl and the moreoutre the heware the jevil walks my son
with yours? That might the carthe catch you wear the jump jump bird
and sun the pumia bandersmack shirt. He told his horrible mord in hand a

(08:26):
long time. The manksm pole.He thought, so resteady by the tub
doubtream stood the wild and thought, and as in Sufi thought, he stood.
The jablock with eyes of flames camewhistling through the towns. He wore

(08:50):
the verbal every game, one toone who went went to the battle play
went flicker snack. He left it, and with it he went anging back

(09:15):
and asked out laying the gamelog, come to my arms, might see any
boy or Fred stay clo, caris gone? Was really and the tidy

(09:39):
bowl did dire and gimble in thewave all where the bortle bowls and the
moon out. Why what do youthink of that? I'm die but it

(10:01):
doesn't seem to make my sense sense? Why it makes perfect said? I
don't know the meaning of heart forthere, Oh you don't know the meaning?
Well, that doesn't prove it doesn'tmake sense, although I will agree
there are some hard words they're reallyFor instance, now really means four o'clock
in the afternoon, the time youbegin whirling things for dinner. Again,

(10:22):
what does lithy mean youll slidy meanslies and slimy live is the same as
active. You see, it's likea portmanteau. There are two meanings packed
up in one word. Oh,I see it now? And what are
how with toes are something like badgert, there's something like lizards, and there's

(10:43):
something like corks creek. They mustsee they joyous looking creature they are.
Also they make their nests under sundoes also they live on cheese out what
looks gyre and to timber to guyersto go round and round like a gyroscope.
It moves to make holes like himand the wave is the grass around

(11:03):
the sundial icle, of course itis. It's called wave, you know,
because it goes a long way beforeit, and a long way behind
it, and a long way beyondit. N it died exactly so well,
lilimsy means flimsy and miserable. There'sanother portmanteau foil, and a borrow
gold is a thing shabby looking birdwith its feathers sticking out all around,

(11:26):
something like a live month. Andthen moms wrath, Well, a rath
is a sort of green pig,But mome I'm not certain about. I
think it's short for from home, meaning that they've lost their way, you
know. And what that out grade? Out driving is something between bellowing and

(11:46):
whistling, with a kind of sneezein the middle. However, you hear
it done, maybe someday, thenyou'll never forget. I'm afraid I'm giving
you a great deal of trouble.Indeed you are good day and hunting imped
to shut his eyes. Alice waiteda minute to see if he would speak
again, but as he never openedhis eyes or took any further notice of

(12:07):
her, she said goodbye a coupleof times, and getting no answer,
she quietly walked away, but shecouldn't help saying to herself as she went
of all the antic She repeated thisout loud, as it was a great
comfort to have such a long wordto say of all the antetisfectory people I
ever met. She never finished herlentence, for at this moment Alice's thoughts

(12:31):
were interrupted. A knight dressed incrimson armor came galloping down upon her,
brandishing a great cloud. Horrid ahorse hurt your word, please me humor.
The red knight had humbled off hishorse, so Alice stepped around with
some concerned for the new enemy. This time it was a white knight.

(12:54):
He drew up at Alice's side andtumbled off his horse too. The two
knights tacked looked at each other forsome time without speaking. Alice left from
one to the other in some ofthe wilderness. She's my prison, yes,
But then I came and rescued, well, pay for this your helmet?

(13:16):
What their hell? That's to theshape of a horse's kids. You
will observe the rules of battle,of course, are you always do?
I've done enough? But the rulesof better arm. One rule seemed to
be that if one night ship tothe other. He knocked him off his
horse, and if he make it, he tumbled off himself. And another

(13:41):
rule seems to be that they holdtheir clubs with their arms, as if
they were pucious beauty. What anoise they make when they tumbled, just
like a horse and a fire ironbowling into the fender. And how why
is the horse they are? Theylet them get on justice if they were
stable. Another rule of battle thatAlice had not noticed seemed to be that

(14:05):
they always fell on their heads. And the battle ended with her both falling
off in this way, side byside. When they got up again,
they shook hands, and then thered Knife mounted and galloped off. That

(14:26):
do a glorious victory on it.I don't know. I don't want to
be anybody's business. I want tobe a queen the show you will.
When you've crossed the next brook,I'll see you safe to the end of
the wood, and then I mustgo back. You know that's the end
of my move. Thank you verymuch. May I help you off with
your helmet? Hi? Thank you? Now one can breathe voisly. Alice

(14:52):
thought she had never seen such astrange looking soldier in all her life.
He pushed back his shaggy hair withboth hands and turned his gentle face and
large mild eyes to Alice. Hewas dressed in tin armor, which seemed
to fit him very badly, andhe had a queer shaped little deal box
fastened across his shoulders, upside downand with the lid hanging open. Alice

(15:13):
lifted it with great curiosity. Isee you, admind my little box.
It's my own invention to keep closedand sanded it in the upside down,
so that the rain can get in, but the thing can get out.
Do you know the lid? OhGod, I didn't know it, But
then all of a sudden they musthave fallen out, and the box is

(15:35):
no use for that? Then whyare you hanging it so carefully on the
tree in hoak? Some bees maymake a nest in it. Then I
should get the honey, but you'vegot a bee hide for something like one.
Start into the saddn Yes needs avery good beehive, one of the
best kinds. But not a singlebee has come here again. And the
other thing is a mouse trapped.I suppose the mice keep the bees out,

(15:58):
or the bees keep the mice out. I don't know which. I
was wondering what the mass cap wasfor. It isn't they likely there would
be any mice on the horse's death. Not very likely perhaps, But if
we do come, I don't chooseto have them running all around. Now,
you see it is where to beprovided for everything, as the reason
the horse has all those anchors aroundhis feet. But what are they for?

(16:19):
That took guard against the bites ofshots eat an invention of my own.
And now healthy on, I'll gowith you to the end of the
woods. It took a long timeto get the knight in his saddle,
because he was so very awkward, and because the saddle was already loaded with
bunches of carrots and fire irons andmany other things. But at last they

(16:40):
accomplished it and started off through theforest. Whenever the horse stopped, which
it did very often, he felloff and fluck, And whenever it went
on again, which it generally did, rather suddenly, he fell off behind.
Otherwise he kept on pretty well, except that he had a habit of
now and then falling off sideways, and as he generally did this on the

(17:02):
side on which Alice was walking, she soon found that it was the best
player enough to walk quite so closeto the horse. As Alice helped the
white Knight up the fifth time, she ventured to say, I'm afraid you've
not had much practice in writing. Now, What makes you say that?
Because people don't fall off quite sooften and they've had much practice. I've

(17:22):
had plenty of practice, plenty ofpractice. Indeed, the great art of
riding is the key. Here thesentence ended as suddenly that had begun,
as the Knight fell heavily on thetop of his head, exactly in the
path where Alice was walking. Shewas quite frightened this time and said in
an anxious tone as she picked himup, Oh, I had no phones

(17:45):
are broken, no lond to speakof. The great art of writing,
as I was saying, is tokeep your ballads topperly like this, you
know. He let go the bridleand stretched out both his arms to show
Alice what he meant, And thistime he fell flat on his back,
right under the horse's feet. AsAlice was getting him on his feet again,
he kept repeating, plenty of practice, plenty of practice. Spin,

(18:08):
it's too ridiculous. You ought tohave a wooden horse on whie that you
are. Does that kind go smoothly? Much more smoothly than a live horse?
I'll get one one or two,Sarah. I'm a great hand at
inventing things. Now, Uh,I dare say? You notice the last
time you picked me up that Iwas looking rather thoughtful you were a little

(18:32):
gray. Well, just then Iwas inventing a new way of getting over
a gate. Uh would you liketo hear it? Oh? Very much?
Indeed, you see, I saidto myself. The only difficulty is
with the feet. Now the hairis high enough already. Now, first
I put my head on top ofthe gate. Then the heads high amout.
Then I stand on my head, and then the feet are high amout.

(18:56):
You see? Then eh, I'mover? You see? Yes,
I suppose you'd be over when thatwas done. But don't you think it
would be rather hard? But Ihaven't tried it yet, so I can't
care for certain. But oh,you want to get along? Perhaps i'd
better leave. Oh you needn't rush, But I'm any were a few years

(19:17):
ago. Down the hill and openwith that little brook, and then you'll
be a queen. H But you'llstay and see me off first. I
shan't be long you wait and waveyour handschief when I get to that turn
in the road. Oh, Ithink it did encourage me. You see,
of course I wait, and thankyou very much for coming so far.
So they shook hands, and inthe night rode slowly away into the

(19:41):
forest. You one had long tosee him off, I expect. So
Alice stood watching the horse walking leisurelyalong the road, and the night tumbling
off, first on one side andthen on the other. After the fourth

(20:03):
or fifth tumber, he reached theturn, and then she waved her handkerchief
to him, waited till he wasout of sight. Then she turned around
and started to run down the hill. I hope it encouraged him. And
now for the last brook. Andyou, dear queen, how strand it
sounds. And Alice ran the westernway down the hill. And when she

(20:23):
came to the little brook, shejumped and found herself standing before a great

(20:48):
arched doorway, on which the wordsQueen Alice were carved, and on the
other side of which she heard voicessinging. In her hand she carried a
scepter, and on her head shewore a great golden crown. She was
indeed at last the queen, buta slightly puzzled one. But at either

(21:10):
side of the great door was abell, and one was marked visitor's bell,
and the other servant's bell. Nowwris bell? Shall I ring?
I'm not a visitor and I'm nota servant. There ought to be one
marked Queen. You know it's allright, someone's opening it now. It

(21:33):
didn't till we after next the apertinent and Alice knot can rang in vain
for a long time, until atlast the very old frog, who was
sitting under a tree, got upand slowly hobbled up to her. What

(21:56):
is it all? Yes, that'swhose business it is to answer this door?
Which all this door of card? What has been asking? I don't
know what you mean? I speaksEnglish. Doesn't die? Or are you
did? What did it? Askyou? Nothing? I think nothing editing.

(22:19):
Shouldn't do that, shouldn't do thatat all? Waxes it? You
know, let it alone and it'lllet you. But just at this moment
the door flew open a consona cartand Alice looked down on the banquet hall
just as another song began, TheFall. I was sat a crown on

(22:48):
my head. Let them loose featurewhatever they do, come down with the
class. Can't you say? Ican't somebody? What person look happy?

(23:10):
And something? Tel? I don'tdid anybody talking about creature? A wrong

(23:30):
to an honor to see a fable, to its a free child, to
have dealer long to for long?Lit body that the pain? Anything you

(23:52):
heard past the line ninety tiny nine? What never name is Jack? I
think it's for him? Galis appearthe chilly stuff, and all the guests,

(24:14):
birds and beasts and flowers watched Allison'ssilence that she took her place between
the red cream and the white creamof her head a potato. It's nice
of you to give my party forme, your red majesty. I should
never have known how a device peopleto indicte. You've rested the soup and
fish, but I'm the johts yaw. You look a little chi Let me

(24:37):
introduced you to this leg of mutton, and is button Eric and the leg
of mutton got up in the dishand made a little bow to Alex,
and Alice returned the bow, notquite sure whether this was the right thing
to do or not. May Igive you a slice, your majesty?
Certainly not it isn't dedicate to cutanyone been introduced to remove the johnts and

(24:59):
bring all the pudding. I won'tbe introduced to the pudding. Please,
oh, we shall get no hereat all. Putting your magnestic putting candy
and it's pudding. Remove the puddingwaiter, bring back the pudding. Putting
your majesty, now, your majestyhere, you're gonna flash of pudding for

(25:22):
you working bags. And when youhad you like I would you gonna thank
you creature make a remark it's ridiculousto leave all the conversations with what shall
I say nothing? We'll rip yourhealth instead? Where this to you?

(25:55):
So say well, hi, yy cat, And Alice really did rise
as she spoke. She felt herselfgrow several inches and she just managed to
pull herself down by the edge ofthe table. Your person going to happen,
And something did happened, many things. The candles grew until they became

(26:18):
huge fireworks in the bottles, tookplate and fixed the noise wings and with
boxful legs began fluttering around the room, and the leg of Muddony searched the
White Queen's chair, while Alice justhad a glimpse of her Majesty's good natured
face grinning at her open the edgeof the soup marine before she disappeared.
But the third time into the soupsomething had to be done. The several
of the guests were lying in thedishes, and the soup treene was walking

(26:38):
up the table toward Alice, beckoningher impatiently to get out of the waves.
Any stop, and she sees thetablecloth with both hands and gave it
a good pull, and guests anddishes and breaks from candles came crashing down
in a heap on the floor.Alice turned to look for the Red Team
when she considered somehow be the causeof it all, but her Majesty had

(27:02):
dwindled to the size of her dolland was running melloway around the table after
her own chaw. Alice grabbed aroundfor your shape, your eyes will She
took the Red Green off the tableand shook her back and forth with all
her might. The Red Queen madeno resistance whatever, only her face grew
very small, and her eyes gotlarge and green and still as Alice kept

(27:26):
on shaking her, she kept growingshorter and fatter and soft and around,
and it really was a kissing afterall. Oh, your red majesty,

(27:53):
she shouldn't pass. So now youwon't sleep out of such a nice dream.
