(07:00):
Anyway, let's welcome to the program. The coach of the Fighting Hocks
football team, Bubba Schweiger, Goodmorning, Bubba, Good morning, Tim.
How are you doing well? Doingwell? You had congratulations on the
victory, and I guess I'll startwith you know I text you that I
figured you could win that game.I didn't think you'd dominate like that though,

(07:23):
did it in the end, Coach? Did it surprise you the way
you guys handled them? Well, you know, and nothing really surprised you
when you do this for a longtime, it's but yeah, we were
very pleased with our performance, youknow. But I it goes back to

(07:43):
I thought our guys had a reallygood week of preparation. You know,
we talked about last week there's gonnabe a lot of noise and all the
outside noise, and I thought ourguys really stayed in the moment and then
obviously too returned the opening kickoff. It just got the building going, and
our student body and fan support wasso awesome out there, you know,

(08:03):
to get that energy and you know, that type of environment going, we
could really feed off it. Butour guys just really really played hard,
and even when bad things happened,we just stayed in the moment. You
know. There were some bad thingsthat happened against us in that game.
You know, they answered with ascore after the kickoff return, and I

(08:26):
thought that was really key that ouroffense you know, went down and answered
that score. And obviously the scoreright before half was big to go up
two scores again, and then thebig interception on their first drive of the
second half and put us with ashort field. You know, the game
overall, when you look at it, field position was really in our favor

(08:50):
and that helped us. But thefans and just awesome, awesome environment.
Well, I you know, couldbe said about the opening play of you
know, the kickoff return for atouchdown, but you know, you look
at all the responding plays the way, you know, especially early in that

(09:11):
first half, because they put youin a situation where your team had to
kind of respond and have a reaction, and I just you know, it
takes a certain element within oneself tobe able to do that, and I
just that's a great characteristic or traitto have within oneself to be able to
dial up the response, so tospeak. And that that's really one of

(09:35):
my big takeaways from from Saturday's win. Coach, what do you think?
Yeah, you know, we're continueto grow as a team. And I've
said it several times, I lovethis team. You know, we aren't
perfect, but we continue to stickwith it and stick together. And you
know, I just felt like ourdemeanor throughout the week, and then I

(10:00):
thought Dale Lennon was awesome on Fridaynight had him visit with the team,
and it was just an awesome message. I think he really put our guys
just he put him at ease, like, hey, you can do this,
and to hear it from an outsidevoice of a guy that you know
a lot of our guys don't knowhim. They know of him because we

(10:22):
talk about the past a lot inour program and knew that he went into
the Hall of Fame, but Ijust he did a great job putting our
guys at ease, like you cando this, but you got to believe.
And I think you know, wehave strong beliefs and that was evident
on our sideline and you know, giving up a score, we just had

(10:43):
a different demeanor. We weren't bummedout about it, we weren't happy about
it, but we really could stayin the moment and that really helped us
put the response. Obviously, Paulhelps you know, you can stay in
the moment and if you don't respond, then it gets tougher and tougher.
So yeah, those things were hugefor us on Saturday. I think didn't
we'd learn a lot about your footballteam after the STSU game and how they

(11:07):
responded, and they responded the waythey did against Western then again last Saturday.
Says a lot about the character onyour team, doesn't it. Yeah?
I think I think it does,Tim, And now, you know,
the next challenge is how we respondthis week. You know, after
a everything's about growth and you know, a huge win, obviously a lot

(11:28):
of emotion in the game, andyou know a lot of post game stuff
and Saturday night Sunday, Now,can we do that again? Eliminate this
noise and really really focus on usand our preparation for a really talented Northern
Iowa football team on the road. You know, that's another step that our

(11:52):
team and our program needs to take. Now, you know, after a
big emotional win, are we ableto come back down, get our feet
on the floor, and really havea great week of preparation to go on
the road and compete at a highlevel. You know, we talk about
the Alaris Center magic and the youknow, it's one of those places where

(12:16):
North go to football. I mean, it's just it's had a great relationship.
I mean, they're just things thathappen. Conversely, the team that
you're going to go play here onSaturday. Northern Iowa. The Unidome has
its own magic area of its ownfor that program. They do incredibly well
there and I know they had abump on the road because they played a

(12:37):
very good team this past weekend. But the oday we saw kind of what
he's able to do for them. He's an incredibly talented, gifted player at
the quarterback spot, and they justseem to have a knack of in their
building, it's a it's a specialplace for them. So it's it's a
challenge, there's no doubt. Forgetwhat happened this past weekend. They're going

(13:00):
home into the comfy confines of abuilding that tends to great magic for them,
right well, sure does. Inthere it seems very good, you
know. They they just turned itover on Saturday, and you know,
but they're very talented and you mentionedthe O Day and the big strong arm

(13:20):
QB six five, two hundred andthirty pounds, you know that can make
all the throws and big physical upfronton both sides of the ball. They
they play with a lot of energyand this will be something we need to
really focus on our prep and justyou know, to go into that environment.

(13:41):
It's homecoming for them, I believe, and they'll have a packed house.
And then we got to deal withnoise on the road, and we're
going to have to deal with thehighs and lows of a game, and
you know, we just got toreally do a good job of that.
But it comes down to day byday, just as you put on our

(14:01):
T shirts ten years ago around here, we've really got to live that out
now. And you know, ourcaptains and our leadership have really done a
super job up to this point, you know, because we had a low
point couple of weeks ago when wewere down at Brookings and you know,
put a lot of emotion and energyinto that preparation and didn't work out how

(14:24):
we wanted and we were be ableto recover. So now we got to
do a great job again. Butthis no question, Paul, it's going
to be tough down there at NorthernIowa and certainly big in the Missouri Valley
Conference, right huge. They're allbig. You know. It's just if
you look across at the scores thispast week, they're all big and they're

(14:46):
all tough. Well, I wasjust going to say, before we let
you go, did you count howmany hugs you probably got and gave out
basically on Saturday. You have anestimate of how many there were. Yeah,
I had a little fun with itwith the team yesterday. I'll just
be honest. I say, you, guys, your girlfriends are hugging me,
your grandmothers were hugging me, andeverybody in between. I didn't even

(15:07):
know. It's a lot of fun. You know, you got to enjoy
the moment, but then you betterget over it. But it was a
lot of fun. I will saythat well. And lastly, I'll just
say, you talk about how tohandle it. That's the one thing you
would say about your team that youhave this year. You have a number
of great leaders, and it's onething for you to say the messaging like,

(15:28):
hey, it's time to turn thepage. We got to work.
We gotta be worried about our prepevery single day. But it's really the
message when it comes from the leadersthat you have, that's where it's going
to probably have the most effect.Right. Yeah, best teams are player
led. The best teams are playerled. We can help guide, but

(15:48):
those guys they know, they knowtheir responsibility and they're doing it a really
good job. Up to this point. They got to continue to do that
wonderfully, said, appreciate the time, coach, Congratulations on an exciting Saturday
that was. But now we lookahead and get ready and know that there's
so much more opportunity ahead for thisprogram here, including Saturday against Northern Iowa.

(16:11):
Thanks for this. We'll talk toyou tomorrow night on Hawk Talk.
All right, thanks guys, havea great money coach there you go,
coach Bubba Schweigert joining us here ona Monday morning recapping thing. So wow,
what a what a whirlwind And thatputs a bowl on the Saturday war,
does it. Maybe we'll hear fromBill Chaves next hour to talk about

(16:33):
his perspective as the athletic department surviveda busy, busy weekend. But yeah,
and everybody did a good job.Everybody did a great job. Yeah,
absolutely, and but it was itwas something. And now we brace
ourselves for another huge weekend ahead withU and die Minnesota here in Grand Forks

(16:53):
while the football teams at Northern Iowafor a big one on the road.
But yeah, our thanks to BubbaSchwigert for joining us year on completed or
don sense as he does each andevery Monday morning during the football season,
