(00:01):
Hey, what's going on you guys? This is Joseph Bonner and I wanna
give you a nice, warm welcometo today's show. How is everyone's week
so far? And as you headinto the weekend, I hope that you
and your family are getting a chanceto destress a little bit, relax and
(00:21):
enjoy yourself. On today's show,we are going to explore a topic that
I guess I can consider as oneof my favorite topics, and that's how
to live on less save especially intwenty twenty four. We're gonna talk about
some practical tips for thrifty living. Now, when we say thrifty living,
(00:47):
we don't mean that you have tolive a life of exclusion and despair.
But the tips that we're gonna providetoday are going to allow you to still
live a very comfortable life, onlybearing in mind the costs have increased and
(01:07):
so you'll be able to save somemoney. That's the idea here now.
With so much going on in theworld as it continues to change, and
I typically start my shows off likethat, I don't know if you guys
heard the story about the one youngman and his girlfriend who was pregnant by
the way they were staying in astorage unit, living outside of a storage
(01:30):
unit. They had everything set up, they had their bed set up,
they had a place to eat, they had a little entertainment area in the
storage unit. And the young manhe posted the video on TikTok just to
show people how you can cut costsand still survive. Obviously, the storage
(01:55):
unit facility got wind of the videobecause the video did go viral, and
him and his girlfriend were given anX amount of time before they were expected
to exit the premise because they hadviolated the contract. Since then, a
gofund me had been set up forhim and his girlfriend and uh, last
(02:15):
we checked, he he was wellon his way to having a more stable
life. But I share that storybecause although what he did was illegal and
obviously he had to adjust, hismindset is commendable. He was looking for
(02:36):
a way to survive in a costeffective way to manage not only himself but
also his girlfriend. Now, althoughhe chose not a idealistic avenue to do
that, I think his attitude nonethelessis commendable. So we're gonna talk a
little bit about how to save intwenty twenty four, but in a legal
(03:00):
way, and I hope that thiscan provide you with some support. Here,
So we're gonna run through a listhere. We have about ten items
here. We may not get throughall of them today, just depending on
how fast I can get through thislist. But some of them you may
not have. You might be asurprised you're on the list. Let's go
ahead and start with the number one. And that's embracing minimalism. Now,
(03:23):
to embrace minimalism means it's very specificallywe try to declutter our living space,
declutter our lives, and prioritizing mindfulpurchases, so like eliminating unnecessary possessions,
just to free up some space andfree up some expenses. One area or
(03:44):
one place that we do this oftentimesif we travel a lot. Is when
we're on route to travel and wehave to check on our bags and we
find out, hey, our bagsweigh a little too heavy. They're a
little too heavy, right, andnone of us, none of us wants
to pay the fee, whether wecan afford the fee or not, we
just don't want to pay the extrafees. So what do we start doing.
We start pulling out things out ofour bag. You know, we
(04:10):
don't care about the line behind us. We're not embarrassed. We say,
hey, I'm not paying this feed. We're going to get rid of some
of this stuff. We started justtossing stuff. Now, the things that
we just a few hours ago sworeup and down we needed on this trip,
now we're literally tossing it away tosave a few bucks. Now here's
the thing, Now, if wewere to practice that type of mindset and
(04:31):
attitude just in our lives, itcould literally help us to save money.
If we're decluttering our lives, we'renot spending money on unnecessary items on a
consistent basis, we have less thatIf we have less, that means we
need less space. And when weneed less space, we're going to spend
(04:53):
less to maintain the space that wedo have. It's it's just a science,
it's mathematics, right, And sofor us to be just conscious of
how much we have and you know, using the time now, whether we
have a little bit of time andfreedom to just kind of declutter our lives
and free up some space and freebsome cash at the same time. Let's
(05:17):
goant and move on to number two, and that's reducing energy consumption. Now,
when we say reducing energy consumption.I'm not talking about reducing your energy
consumption like kind of like a bear. Right. You know, we know
a bear conserves energy to survive hibernation. Right. And as the world does
get colder, in a sense,we do have to practice energy saving techniques
(05:38):
to write out these difficult times. But the energy saving techniques we need to
write out I have to deal with, you know, our home, right.
You know, the world is fullof technology now. So we have
our cell phones, we have ourcomputers, we have our iPads, we
have all these things that need tobe charged. That that costs money.
So we want to try our bestto cut down on utility bills. And
(06:00):
that means you know, buying energyefficient appliances, turning off lights when we're
not using them, unplugging electronics thatare just in standby mode, right,
adjusting our thermostat and our heating, just to make sure that we're saving on
costs there. And here's one thingthat you might want to consider too.
You don't always have to charge yourappliances at home. Maybe perhaps use some
time and go to the library andcharge your appliances there. If you're at
(06:24):
a work environment where they don't mindyou charging there charge. There a lot
of us when we go out fora cup of coffee, we know that
they have plugs that we can plugour appliances in. Hey, I mean
why not, right, you know, you're you're making a purchase, you're
a customer. Utilize the energy thatthat you're that you are around when you're
carrying out your daily activities, ifobviously it's appropriate to do so, and
(06:47):
if especially at considering work, youknow, you may need work permission to
do that, but it could helpyou to just reduce on cost. And
who's who's not trying to do that. We're going to go into the next
one, and that is planning ourmeals and cooking at home. You know.
I was just having this conversation withmyself a couple of days ago,
and I had a really crazy experiencewith the restaurant just like six hours ago.
(07:12):
And okay, I'm gonna tell youthis experience. It's a little disgusting,
but I'm gonna tell you this experienceanyways. So I like to order
after a workout, I like tohave chicken. Typically, I like making
the chicken myself, just because thechicken when you make it yourself, is
just a lot fresher and you getmore, you get a bigger portion,
at least where I'm presently at outof the country, so when you order
it, the portions are a lotsmaller, which I don't like that,
(07:35):
especially when I'm trying to put onmuscle mass. So anyways, but I
was tired. I didn't feel likecooking. I didn't prepare my meal,
so I ordered out. So whatthe food gets there and I'm like two
pieces of chicken in. It's justso disgusting, you guys, I'm two
pieces of chicken in. And somethingjust told me, like, hey,
you know, because I usually don'tput like the lemon, I don't usually
(07:56):
don't squeeze it on my chicken. But I decided, hey, I might
squea some lemon on my chicken today. So as I go to pick up
the lemon, I look and Inoticed there's a hair on the lemon.
That you may think a hair, not a big deal. Oh no,
this was a big deal. Thiswas a pubic hair on the piece of
lemon. And what that tells meis a couple of things. Whoever prepared
(08:18):
my food clearly either did not washtheir hands after using the restroom, which
makes me almost want to throw upright or something else. It's just sickening.
So obviously I couldn't finish it.I threw the chicken out, but
thankfully I have a stray cat inthe area and they love anything I throw
out, so they enjoyed the restof the meal. And I still have
(08:41):
yet to leave a review on thatrestaurant app but I'm going to do that
actually a little bit later on today. The point was is that if I
would have prepared my meal like Itold myself to do literally the day before,
I wouldn't have had that gross experienceand I would have saved So you
know, we think of chickmunks, monks, and squirrels. They like to
(09:01):
pack their cheeks in with a lotof nuts and more than what they can
handle. Right, Well, whywhy do they do that? They do
that so they can save the foodfor later. So it is wise to
maybe to cook everything at once, pick a day and just cook your meal
at once and then obviously refrigerate itand then spread it out during the week
so that you're not wasting money goingout and eating here and eating there.
(09:24):
And not only are you saving money, but you're probably saving yourself a health
bill for those places and establishments thathave employees that do not take care of
their hygiene. So it's a winwin at the end of the day,
to be honest. So meal planningdefinitely want to consider it. All right,
(09:46):
let's go on to point number four, and that is prioritizing free and
affordable entertainment. There was a recentstory on the news where a mom she
had tickets, well she had amssee bucks. That's like, you know,
when you go to the movies, you can start saving up and you
start accumulating these these these free bucksyou know at AMC theaters. So the
(10:09):
mom had the free bucks to likeget popcorn and soda and candy and stuff,
but she didn't have money for themovie. So she took her kids
to use the AMC Bucks to getthe snacks, and she told her kids,
hey, now, she asked herkids on the video. She says,
hey, kids, we eating here, she says, but where we
gonna watch a movie at because wecan't afford to watch a movie here.
(10:31):
They said, We're gonna watch amovie at home, and she said that's
right. So and it's true.So prioritize free entertainment. You know,
you got parks that are free. You can watch movies at home. You
can stream movies online for free ona lot of different platforms. Look at
for free community events. You canfind those usually in your local newspaper or
(10:52):
on your local news website. Tofind the free events that are happening every
week. Really, watch a movie, pick up a book and read it,
catch up on some sleep, Imean, enjoy your leisure time,
take naps. But everything that youdo during the weekend or during the week
doesn't have to cost Actually, someof the best things that you can do
cost zero money at all. Ijust came back from a small island and
(11:16):
although getting to the island did costmoney, don't get me wrong, But
the things that we did on thatisland were so enjoyable and it was just
free stuff. You know, walkingto the waterfall and you know, just
hiking in the in the area, you know, walking on the on the
sandy beach, taking pictures of thewater and the animals that are natural to
the environment. All that stuff didn'tcost a dime. And so look at
(11:41):
the natural wonders around you and yourcommunity and your environment and enjoy it,
embrace it, take pictures, youknow, and share that with the world,
and you're going to feel more peaceas a result, and of course,
save money. Right, Let's goon to point number six, and
that's take advantage of technology. Now. We talked a little bit about how
you can charge your technology in certainlocations, but you can also use technology
(12:01):
to your advantage within regards to savings. There's a lot of apps now that
will show you how to save money, how to find coupons, compare comparison,
shopping with different websites, tools thatcan help you get the best price,
you know, and that's always awesome, right, So if you can
find some of those websites out andjust start cutting costs where you don't need
(12:24):
to necessarily spend so much. There'sone lady she was standing in line at
a restaurant and her total came upto like one hundred and like seventy five
bucks, and the guy's like thisone hundred and five bucks, and then
lay looks at him and she saysreally, And she just gives him this
look as she pulls out the stackof coupons, and he's like, are
you serious. She's like, ohyeah, I'm serious. And by the
(12:45):
time he finished scanning all the coupons. Her total was like sixteen bucks.
I mean it's very impressive, youknow that. You know, somebody can
get a big bill like that, like get it down that much. Now,
maybe we won't go that far,but you know know, we can
definitely learn some lessons about just savingmoney, but just using coupons and taking
advantage of deals and sales and thingsof that nature. Cutting down costs are
(13:09):
just moving to the next one,and that is reducing subscriptions and memberships.
This is a big one I'm guiltyfor as well, because I have a
lot of subscriptions on my phone andsometimes I forget all about them and I'm
just like, I'm paying for themand I'm not using them. So there
are also apps for that that willhelp you to figure out which suscriptions you're
using that you're not really using anymore, like TV streaming apps just unnecessary,
(13:33):
just unnecessary apps that you don't needthat you're probably paying for right now.
Actually, I can think of acouple right now that I need to counsel.
I counseled a few last month.It's a couple more I can counsel
this month because I just don't usethem and I'm wasting you know, eleven
bucks here, are ten bucks here. It adds up eventually, right,
So reduce your subscriptions and your memberships. And you can always go to your
Google play Store. So from yourGoogle play Store or wherever your Apple store
(13:56):
you can use, there's usually abutton that will say subscriptions, you know,
so go to either subscriptions or manageyour subscriptions and they will show you
all the descriptions that you have. And then the council button is pretty close
by. Weould just hit the councilbutton and there you go, and it's
and it's done. So you cando it all from the app store,
whatever app store that you use foryour particular fault. All right, let's
(14:18):
go on to point number nine, and that is d I Why do it
yourself and repurpose it? You know, Uh, A lot of those who
are business owners, we already knowwhat d I Y is all about,
you know, because as a businessowner, especially when you're new, you
don't have the expendable income to hirestaff, so you do do it all
(14:39):
yourself. You wear a lot ofhats in the beginning. So but maybe
this is something that you can practicedoing in the home and with your family
is to cut down expenses. Youknow, uh, maybe you can figure
out how to fix the sink yourself. It doesn't you know, if it's
not too complicated. You know certainthings, you know, repairing little things
(15:01):
around the house that may require typicallynot a mechanic but a handyman. Doing
the yard work yourself instead of hiringsomebody to do it, you know,
cleaning something instead of hiring a serviceto clean it, maybe you can clean
it yourself. Now, dry cleaning, I would not recommend you try.
If you got stuff to dry clean, I would encourage you to dry cleaning.
But you know, you you know, washing yourself, you don't always
(15:24):
maybe you don't want to take everythingto the washing house all the time.
Maybe you could just wash it yourselfagain, d I y, you know,
and it can actually help me tosave it and cut down on the
cost. Now I'll say this aboutwashing. You know, when I first
came to the country that I'm inright now before I head back to the
States, I've been here for abouta year, and one of the things
(15:45):
that was hard for me to findwas a good laundry facility people that,
you know, because I would haveto pay somebody to come pick my laundry
up, and it was just hardfor me to find a good, reliable
one. So because it was hardfor me to find one, I was
like, I'm not gonna not haveclean clothes. So I started washing my
style own stuff, washing my ownstuff, drying my own stuff until I
was able to find a service thatI felt it was gonna do a good
job, you know what I mean. So whatever you can do yourself,
(16:08):
definitely do it. And they alsosay, you know something about repurposing,
so instead of purchasing something new,you might be able to just repurpose an
old one. So oh yeah,I'll give you an example, like I
this is a good example and abad example at the same time. Okay,
so it's a good example because Okay, so I had these headphones,
(16:30):
right, my favorite headphones. Iuse them. I've had them for over
a year. I love them becausewhen you're at the gym, it just
really blocks out every single bit ofnoise you have, even if they have
the music blasting on the back.My speakers are so good, like I
don't hear any of it, LikeI'm just in my zone and I love
it. So anyways, make along story longer I ended up snapping one
(16:51):
of the sides of my speakers.I didn't break the speaker part, it
was just like the part that theheadset part that goes over your head.
And for a while I try tomanage it without trying to fix it anything.
And then I was like, youknow what, I'm just gonna end
up getting some new headphones. AndI did it. I did it.
I literally did it the same daythat I broke them. I literally went
the same day got new headphones, same brand, but not the same speakers.
(17:11):
So and then I use the speakersfor like one day and I'm like,
these are these are nothing compared towhat I had, so and so
that's when I went back to repurposingmy original speakers. I said, I
mean, there has to be away I can fix this. So first
I tried uh tape and that didn'twork. So then I bought super glue.
So I superglued and the bam, sure enough super glue. That was
(17:34):
the fix. And so I stilluse them. So I have new headphones
that I barely I never use.I only use them like when I'm at
home and I want to watch amovie, I'll put them on. But
I don't use them for the gym. The ones that I broke are the
ones I still used because I justrepurposed it and just fixed it. And
you know, because buying the newone it wasn't as good as the original
one. So you can save moneyby sometimes just repurposing it or just trying
(17:56):
to fix it yourself. All right, let's go into our last last banal
least and I say last, butnot leaks because this really isn't the least
one. This is probably should havebeen number one, and that is you
want to emphasize health and wellness. So if you have a healthy lifestyle right
now, are your career, areyou starting to develop a healthy live lifestyle
(18:17):
right now, it can help youto cut down on medical expenses in the
long run. So things like exercisingagain, a balanced diet, good sleeping
habits, these can actually reduce thelikelihood of medical conditions that would require extensive
medical attention as well as money andresources. So one of the things that
(18:38):
I wish I would have done betterwhen I was younger is taking care of
my skin. And for those ofyou guys know, I'm black, right,
so at least growing up in myfamily and our culture, we were
taught that we didn't need sunscreen. That is not true. We definitely need
sunscreen. So as I'm like,I'm forty now, so I just started
noticing the changes of my skin textureon my right around my eyebrows, right
(19:06):
under my eyes, I'm starting toget like the little dark patches. And
it's from two things. Number one, not wearing sunscreen, that's number one,
and then number two also not moisturizingmy skin regularly, you know,
because I'm you know, I'm aguy. I was like moisturizing my skin,
Like, what's that? You knowwhat I mean? It's soap water,
that's it. I'm done right. However, make the long story again
(19:26):
longer. So now I went togo see a dermatologist. A dermatologists like,
okay, hey, hey, yougot a couple of issues here.
They're not crazy problems, so thatthere are some they can be fixed.
It's just gonna take some months tofix it. But obviously it's gonna cost,
right, So it's gonna cost toget the right moisturizer that I need
right now and also to get theskin toned back to where it needs to
(19:47):
be. All that's extra costs Icould have saved all that money if I
would have just taken care of itin the first place. Anyways, hindsight
is twenty twenty, right, Sotake care of yourself. Take care of
not only your health, your youreating house, but also your skin.
You know, take your hair, take care, do your best. Just
do your best to take care ofwhat you have, and it can reduce
costs in the long run. Now, twenty twenty four, you guys,
(20:11):
I can't promise you it's going tobe an amazing year of self discovery.
But I can promise you that ifyou utilize these suggestions, you are going
to do better mentally, emotionally, and physically in twenty twenty four. And
that's the go. It's not alwaysabout having just the most fantastic year,
but it is about doing the bestthat we can with what we have in

that year and showing ourselves appreciative. So gohad and implement these teas ten strategies.

these suggestions. You guys, Iwant to thank you so much for joining
