Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the Fortune Factor Podcast where Conversations Do Matter,
Coming to you live from Washington, DC. Thank you for
joining us as y'alls my fortune topic memory versus power.
With the consolidation of all of these major media outlets,

(00:26):
it impacts everything. There'll be some local communities won't won't
even receive coverage. I mean perfect examples of Jimmy Folon show,
Sinclair and these other magnets, major newspaper and TV station
magnets not airing your show because they're worried about profits

(00:49):
over information. Here we go with more information.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Analysts are fleeing their newsrooms, archives are being deleted, and
memories are being erased. Today we're diving into the hidden
battle between those trying to control our collective memory and
the archivists fighting to preserve it.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
And it's not just Russia. This is happening everywhere, just
in more subtle ways. Really, how so well, According to
recent research, we're seeing unprecedented levels of media consolidation. Large
corporations are increasingly controlling not just what we see now,
but how we remember the past.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
That's actually terrifying when you think about it.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
It is, and what's particularly concerning is how digital technology,
which was supposed to democratize information, is actually making it
easier to control narratives.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
How does that work exactly?

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Well, take what's happening in Russia. Since twenty twenty two,
the government has been forcing publishers to retroactively delete all
mentions of political opposition, dissent over the war in Ukraine
and LGBTQ plus issues.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Wait, they can just erase history like.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
That in the digital age. Yes, and it's happening faster
than ever before.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
But surely someone must be fighting back against this.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Absolutely. There's actually an incredible initiative called the Russian Independent
Media Archive a RIMA that launched in twenty twenty three.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
What do they do.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
They're preserving the work of fifty five independent media outlets
dating back to two thousand, when Putin took office. It's
a direct challenge to stay

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
