I need this. I know whatelse is in there? Oh my god,
there's a microfod Wow, first professmicrophone. There it is God.

(04:16):
The microphone is in a box. It's Mike is now reaching into the bag
the box. Wow. All right, let's do you want to hook that
new one up. We're gonna usethe new microphone. I'm gonna I'm gonna
turn your volume down and you're gonnawell, we'll cover we'll cover light like
chatter like banter. All right,So, Wells's volume is down, which

(04:36):
means he can't hear what we're sayingabout. Okay, we can't. Okay,
he can't hear it. He cameinto that pretty grim. You think
we lost it, Yeah he did. I think we turned this day around
talking about AI taking over our podcast. Yeah, that got dark fast.
Holy smokes. Yeah, he didn'teven know how old he was. I
know. Just Mike is now.I'm not gonna describe. Mike has opened

(04:59):
the mic her phones and now pressthe button. Take that out. Now
he can press the button. Mike'sbeen itching to press this button. That
detaches the microphone. Now he isnow inserting. All right, let's say
testing testing. Oh incredible. Iheard sounds like he was right next to

(05:21):
me. I know that's what hesaid. That. What does our listeners
here too? Yeah, if they'restill listening, if Bill Dean, you
guys come back. Kate, Oh, Kate, Kate, Kate. We
we were really big fans, orat least I am. I actually don't
know if Pat and Tom are Okay, Tom is I appreciate her work?

(05:44):
Okay, he wasn't. He wasn'tsuper strong on tar, but he doesn't
like I thought she was good intar. She was itself anyway, Kate.
We we are waiting for your call, Kate Blanchett, so our lines
are open. She just texted meand said to say happy birthday. Oh
c B. Nice, there yougo. Well, happy birthday, sir.

(06:05):
Thank you guys very much. Ivery much appreciate that. I really
and I'm going to try and holdthis microphone just like that, just like
just any closer for the time.Next time. We'll get it set up
on the stand. All right, very cool. So, so have you
seen anything? We'll get back tothat. Yeah, you see anything interesting?
I've actually seen a few movies overthe last week that I would like

(06:29):
to call up my list and andtalk a little bit about. I saw
the new Jerry Seinfeld movie that Iknow you were not a huge get to
it, Unfrosted, which I thought. It's in the genre of a stupid
movies, goof goofy movies, butit was funny. I thought it was
fun. It was you don't thinktoo much about it. It's not gonna

(06:50):
win any awards, but you knowit's fine. Okay. Yeah, a
lot of cameos, lati cameos, wasted cameos, look ahead, please.
Then I saw Love and Mercy Underrated. This is an underrated gem actually,
which is is in mind goes tothe theme of what we're gonna be talking
about Love and Mercy, about youngBrian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and

(07:15):
also as he gets older and howhis life it kind of turns out after
all the fame and fortune and unfortunatelyhe's diagnosed with some psychological mental problems.
So it's very interesting and I thoughtit was actually quite a good movie.
Paul Dano's performance as a young BrianWilson's really good. And then John Cusack

(07:41):
as the older Brian Wilson's very good. So like that one a lot.
Then I saw Leave the World Behind, the recent Netflix movie with Julie Roberts
and Ethan Hawke. Also like thatone a lot. Good kind of end
of the world, suspenseful thriller movie. And uh, well I have a

(08:01):
lot of things I've seen recently.Of a warm up, I saw a
Fox Catcher. I hadn't seen thatone. Yeah, that's a great film.
I a fan. I didn't loveit. Yeah, I came fourteen
fourteen. Yeah, it was watchedthat actually, so the performances are really

(08:24):
good. Yeah, I felt likewe didn't get really into the surface of
any of the characters and catch thefox frosted go ahead. Yeah that's better.
And then the last that I sawwas Molly's Game Aaron brote and directed.
Yeah, I saw that last night. Uh. That one was also
good entertaining, didn't It wasn't likethe best movie, you know, it

(08:50):
was. It was good. Itwasn't like a great film had had the
typical Aaron Sorkin crackling dialogue, butit wasn't like a great, great movie.
Okay, there you go, now, how about you? I saw
I haven't seen too much, butI did see The End We Start From,
which is a British film. It'snot really End of the World,
but it's about pretty catastrophic floods, flooding in England and everybody has to sort

(09:16):
of flee. It definitely has anapocalyptic feel to it, basically about a
family trying to survive and kind ofget back to each other. Jody Coomer
was in that, and Benedict Cumberbatch. He didn have a very small part,
but he was good and performances acrossthe board were great. It was

(09:37):
well written, well done. Youknow. The end didn't like grab me
as I kind of was expecting,But I think a well done film,
and I liked it better than Leavethe World Behind and Unfrusted. It sounds
and definitely better Unfrosted, which Iactually liked Leave the World Behind. I
thought it was well done, butI like this one as a smidge more

(10:00):
end of the worldish movies. Goyes, and I saw in Frosted,
Mike, I did see that andit's definitely in the running for my worst
film of the year twenty twenty four. Yeah, I just thought it was.
It was such a waste. Itwas it didn't go in any direction.
It didn't choose a direction where itwanted to go. The characters were
just there. They I don't eventhink they cared if they made an actual

(10:24):
pop tart, and it was justfrom the beginning. There was at one
point the milk people. I guessthere's supposed to be the mob. I
guess they're afraid people aren't gonna drinkmilk anymore. So there's somehow threatening Seinfeld's
character with cow farts and uh Ididn't say it spoiler. Well yeah,

(10:46):
sorry, but it's just it's notthe end of the movie, like,
there's plenty more. But yeah,I just thought it went absolutely nowhere.
Yeah. See, I didn't thinkit was supposed to really go anywhere.
It was just a series of sortof vignettes that all the all the comics
in there were kind of riffing likehim. I thought nobody knew what they

(11:07):
were supposed to do, and Ithought they were a yeah yeah. I
mean I chuckled a few times, and it was a few parts and I
won't ruin it for the there wasa couple of parts that I did laugh
at, but I did find thatoverall it was a complete waste of time?
Wow, poorly, poorly written.Well, I would still say it's

(11:28):
I would still say it's worth seeingfor a chuckle, but it's not.
Yeah, it's not like anything thatyou're gonna, you know, spend a
lot of time thinking about. ButI definitely enjoyed it more than you did.
Apparently I'm debating, so we candiscuss watch that frosted? Yes there,

(11:58):
Now, how about you, Tom? Have you you've seen most recently
actually not a film, but onNetflix Baby Reindeer did Actually I think you
told you told us about that, right, so you both watched that.
Yeah, you guys started then Istarted it. Did you finish it?
I finished it? Intense in supernot did not know it was going to
go the direction it went across theboard found the early episodes laughing awkwardly obviously

(12:22):
at like not the situation is agood situation, but you just can't believe
it's happening. You can't believe it'sbased on a true story. And then
by episode four it just hangs acomplete left hand turn, takes you by
surprise. Both performances by the leadsI think award winning, Yes, I
think it right, Yeah, Ithink they're going to I think they definitely

(12:43):
will. Yeah, they're dead.I mean, there's gonna be nominations.
There's a monologue by the lead actor, Richard gadd I believe is his name,
in like episode six, that's justit tears you apart. Basically,
you don't get good monologues recently. As of recently I was watching it was
like, I appreciate this this yeah, you know, tough subject was Yeah,
yeah, the whole the whole seriesis hard to watch because of the

(13:07):
subject matter, and but it's itis really good. It's very intense,
but it says a lot about Ithink mental health and the and the state
of trying to keep yourself uh mentallyyou know fit. Basically, you know,
the only thing I'll disagree with isuh disagreeable. No, will it
be remembered around awards time. It'sprobably too early for it to be remembered

(13:30):
later in the year. My otherissue with it is now it's a big
blow up. It's just started toblow up about Netflix is being sued right
by the woman You're saying, hemade up a bunch of stuff. So
there's a lot of blowback from this. You're not going to see this movie
anywhere, right, But I havea feeling that the woman is trying to

(13:50):
get a lot of attention like theyportrayed her in the in this series accurate
portrayal, which it definitely could be. Who knows. But now now we
have to think, all right, where's obviously it's where's the real story,
right right? I think it's mostlyreal. Everything's gets embellished, but well,
yeah, we'll see, but Ido think it will be remembered around

(14:11):
Awards time. Actually, all right, note that it's on the record.
Yeah, I'm all right. Soto get to our theme of tonight's episode,
we're gonna be talking about a fewunderrated gems, movies that kind of
have flown under the radar and uh, people might have forgotten, might have
might they might have even been popularfor a little bit, but just just

(14:37):
you know, years go by,everything you know, moves on, and
so we're gonna like talk about themand why we think they're underrated. So
to want to kick that off forus, Oh wow, I'm kicking it
off. Yeah, So I haveI definitely have a few that I i'd
like to discuss. My my firstone I'm gonna go with, So around

(15:03):
nineteen eighty seven. I didn't doublecheck when this came out, but it
was eighty six eighty seven. Itwas a very very cool vampire movie that
came out, and it wasn't TheLost Boys. Now, I like,
actually like The Lost Boys a lot, but and you know, and now,
if you look at it's obviously avery dated kind of cheese ball movie,

(15:26):
not the trash that The Goonies is. But I do think that Near
Dark, Near Dark is my underthe Radar, my under the Radar films,
directed by Catherine Bigelows. Yeah,Lance Hendricks is in it. There's
there is a great Adrian pasttar pastarJenny Wright, who had a little bit

(15:50):
of a crush on at the time. Did you tell her? I did
not, No, I didn't neverhave the chance. And Bill Bill Paxson's
in that a couple of Aliens atVasquez is actually in that from Aliens and
Uh written by Eric Redd who alsowrote The Hitcher. Oh yeah, remember
the Hitcher, which actually could probablyanother Under the Radar one, But he

(16:11):
also wrote body Parts with Jeff Faheyes, but he did write the Hitcher.
Yes, but no, at thetime when I just remember seeing that,
I thought it was just just thecoolest, most stylish, badass movie out
there. So you know, Idid enjoy The Lost Boys so and they're
obviously both very different movies, butI really like it sticks with me even

(16:33):
now. Near Dark is definitely oneof my uh you undiscovered or underrated gems.
Yeah, definitely, that's my firstone. Do you have one?
And I really like that one.That's a good that's a good picks.
Yes, my first one is bythe Cohen brothers and who are pretty popular,
probably a couple of years ago withYeah, There's There's, There's a

(16:53):
bunch. But this one is areally good one for me because I didn't
know too many movies by them. They didn't have a huge body work at
this point. This one came outin nineteen ninety Miller's Cross. Yeah,
what a movie. Yeah, it'ssuch a good movie. It's for anybody
who's not aware because it's under theradar, underrated. It's a gangster movie.

(17:18):
It stars Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finnyand Gabriel Byrne. Actually, I
don't think he's ever been better ina movie. I know a lot of
people he was really great and usualsuspects, he's usually really really good,
solid, he's a solid actor. But in Miller's Crossing to Me, he
carries the whole movie. There's alot a lot of good a lot of

(17:38):
good performances. John Taturo has areally good small part in there, but
Gabrinny kind of steals it. Finny'sawesome rocks. Yeah, there's there's one
particular scene in there. Tommy GunnYes, yes, so Finny, I
definitely agree. But Gabriel Burn's almostin like every scene of this thing,

(17:59):
and he carries it and he's it'sone of those things where he's got a
plan up his sleeve the whole time, and you just kind of have to
watch it and go with it.It's really good, really dark, very
humorous. So that's my first undertake your flunky and dangle. Yes about
that new microphone you got? Ohyeah, how does that sound? Audience,
feel free to write in and tellus how the new microphone sounds.

(18:22):
How did it feel in your hands? It feels really good, like the
microphone, just moving my hand upand down. Okay, okay, we
just lost Sharon Miller. Oh man, Well, it was the way real
quick going back to the cut.Was the one before that was it Blood
Simple. Blood Simple was their firstone. I believe that kind of put

(18:47):
them on the map. And betweenBlood Simple and Miller's Crossing was Breezing Arizona.
There you go. Yeah, andthen didn't they follow up that with
Barton Fink? Yes, Barton Finkis great, It's Barton Fink was the
Radar? Yeah, everything, Iremember that. Yeah, that would have
been going. I remember watching thatand at the end I wasn't quite sure

(19:08):
what exactly happened, but I knewit was good. Yeah. Yeah,
I was like, oh my god, I need to go figure this out.
But I mean, what a movie. Yeah, what a string of
movies? Yeah, that it isamazing. I mean Raising Averzon and they
were all very different movies. Youtalk about those four movies. That's why
the Comb brothers are the Comb Brothers. Yea. Their body of work is

(19:30):
so strong. Absolutely, So doyou have another one you'd like to talk
about? Tom? I? Sorry, and there we literally walked through the
entire program. No, I'm goand give me that microphone. Sorry,
Pat, We're gonna just ignore Tomfor the beautiful Sorry. Sorry, Yes,

(19:55):
all right, first pick for theunder Radar. So I'm going back
to two thousand and two. Iactually saw this when I was at Rowan,
right, so they brought this upin one of the classes. It's
one of the first films right aroundthat two thousand and two era where they
started filming in digital. So Ibelieve I have the double check, noil,
I'm thinking about that. I believethis was shot completely digitally. Independent

(20:15):
film one Best director at sun Dance, Gary Winnick, starring John Ritter,
Sigourney Weaver, Bb Norris Tadpole.Have you seen it? Yes, it's
such just like a nice film comingof age story, which I believe is
a topic that you guys want todiscuss. Yeah, we can always resurrect
this one. But it's just likelighthearted humor fifteen year old boy who has

(20:41):
a crush on his step mother, right, and then Bb Newart's character is
like the friend and it just itdoesn't spile out of control, but it
GE's little. Yeah, it's agreat film, a lot of easy laughing.
Yeah. I believe it may havebeen the debut of Gary Winnick,
who had a couple of films underhis belt did win a number of awards

(21:02):
behind the scenes. So if youwant an easy it's only an hour and
twenty minutes. Also, oh yeah, it's an easy watch. Yeah,
I remember I did see it,but I think I saw it around that
time, and really i've seen it, but I remember enjoying it. I
think I saw it once again. It was in the film class and I
was like, this is such agreat film, and you know, for
the reasons, we watched it andthen that was it. I never saw
it again, and you don't hearpeople talk about it. So no,

(21:22):
I thought that might be perfect. That's that's that is a perfect movie.
And it's kind of got like awinsome sort of charm to it. That
Yeah, I agree with that one. Now, okayah, back to it.
So early nine, early nineties,Tom just left. In the early
nineties, we had a film thatActually, when I started to work at

(21:45):
Tower Records is around where I discoveredI've worked in a video department, so
it's where a lot of my movietrivia knowledge comes from. Rest of your
work, it's your resume over theaudio audio resume. Yeah, somebody's hiring.
Actually, all right, that's anotherepisode. So yeah, it's called
Waterland. Oh, water Land, starring Jeremy Irons, Ethan Hawke, and

(22:08):
Lena Headley and directed by Stephen jilland All, father of Jake and Maggie.
Yeah. Yeah, it's a it'sa very creative family yeah, but
a very dark, somber sort ofmovie. It's all told in most of
it's told in flashback. Basically,Jeremy Irons is a history teacher talking to

(22:30):
his class Ethan Hawks, kind oflike a jerky kind of student, but
kind of gets where he's going witha lot of the you know, he
understands he's trying to teach history, but also talk about the history of his
family and the love of his lifeand they. I mean, I won't
really get into the whole plot therein case anybody wants to see it.
No spoilers, but just a veryI mean it's dark, yeah yeah,

(22:52):
but a beautiful, beautiful, beautifulmovie. Just still one of my favorites
of all time. I like that. I have to see it again.
It's been a while I forgot aboutit, but I definitely want to watch.
Carter Burwell does the music. Oh, one of Cohen's Yeah, big
go to composers and man that score. Yeah, telling it gets you.

(23:15):
Bring on the score episode though,so you know you're right you're right.
Good, No, you're right,You're right. This is why I like
this because you guys remind me ofstuff that I completely forgot. I forgot
about Tad Paul, and I forgotabout Hills Weyler Forgotten gems. Yeah,
we also forgotten forgotten gems. Yeah. The point. So my next one

(23:36):
is, so I got a directoractually who I was really really a fan
of. Yeah, he doesn't dotoo much now. He was really big
with the independent films when independent filmswere huge in the early nineties. James
Cameron now Hal Hartley, who Unbelievable, Truth, Trust, and then so

(24:00):
those were those were his first couple, and then this one from nineteen ninety
two called Simple Men with Robert JohnBurke, who, fun fact was right
right well RoboCop two he was Iremember he was like a hack. Yeah

(24:22):
he was, and so is RobertJohn Burke. And Bill Sage was the
other co lead. Uh. Soit's it's very independent, very quirky.
Hal Hartley is very quirky director. There's a lot of dialogue in his movies.
It's often repeated, and there's alot of overlapping dialogue in his movies.
Sometimes the cast will just break outand do dancing in his movies.

(24:47):
But it does tell a story, and this story was about the two leads.
They play brothers who are trying tofind their father who is on the
run from the law. And it'sa very simple story about simple men and
a sort of a redemption story tryingto find their father, they kind of

(25:07):
find themselves. So I highly recommendit. Actually, that's awesome. I
met Hal Hartley did you at RowanUniversity? They were having like he was
there just speaking about some of hisfilms, and yeah, I just went
and saw them. And when wasthat. Oh gosh, that was like
mid nineties. I would say, yeah, I thought maybe we have crossed
paths. They would bring in uhyeah, directors all the time, right,

(25:30):
that's I mean, that's the onlyone I ever want to see or
knew about that was there. Butyeah, I remember because a friend had
told me about it. So Iwent down there and saw there. You
saw how he shook his hand nice, I did, And I said,
I'm a screenwriter, what do Ido you know? And he said keep
writing? I said, okay, cool, and that was it. But
we had a great conversation and canyou help me? That is perfecto me

(26:02):
right, screenplays, I have beenin pocket. Here here, here's streaming
movie. Yeah, we never progressedbeyond that, but I feel like he
was really pulling for me. Soundslike it. Do you guys still keep
in touch? We know we losttouch after that. Sadly that's a shame.

(26:26):
But Tom, it's now, it'snow your turn. He probably remembers
me. He probably does. Yeah, I remember forty minutes ago when all
of us were grumpy. That's classic. He probably hasn't washed his hands since
that's now. Yeah, all right, hang that real, let's do this.

(26:48):
All right? He's up me,Yeah, you're up, You're up.
I forget this is this is thefirst film I thought of whimen we
were running those hills, and hebrought up you know, movies that go
blow radar. Forgotten m this, here's go again because this movie is like,
oh, all right, so we'regoing to nineteen ninety nine, okay,

(27:11):
which was Mike's favorite year? Right? I remember every year movie everything
Everything's related, Everything's related, right, full circle. So nineteen ninety nine,
this film ninety nine, Paul ThomasAnderson, what do you know?
What I want to say? Ithought of this and then they came out
with the episode, but Magnolia.Yeah, but this film is like not

(27:32):
many people talked about before the episode. I know you brought up before.
Darn it, Pat, He's onto me. But what a movie.
The movie is so intense. Imentioned, uh last time when we talked
about Oppenheimer, how it's like akind of the score with the slow burn
this film from the moment it startslike forty five minutes in and it is

(27:55):
so like, I don't know you, it grabs you and you're crawling under
your skin or whatever where it isslow burning all caps. Magnificent performance by
Tom Cruise, Oh my god.Oh yeah, nominated I believe for Best
Supports Supporting. Yeah, but youdidn't get it. He didn't get it,
but hindsight probably should have got it. Did Michael Caine win? I
think, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, which was a you know,

(28:18):
here you go, buddy for beinggood for many years. But yeah,
I mean, you don't remember ciderHouse Rules, Michael Caine, You
remember Tom Cruise. Yeah. PaulThomas Anderson obviously you know if you know
him and you follow him and youlike the film. So this was a
I don't know of his entire bodyof work. This one doesn't get mentioned
too often. Also, I thinkthis is borderline, is this this is

(28:38):
this genius or just straight madness becauseI don't even know what the movie's about.
I don't know that any well, you know, it's interesting little like
everything's connected. Yes, No,well, I was gonna say this is
one of those. It's it's definitelya masterpiece. I remember seeing it the
first time in the theater, andI heard so much about it, and
I was such a fan of nightscame before, and I really wanted to

(29:03):
see it, and I actually wasunderwhelmed the first time I saw it.
Yeah, my wife saw it.She loved it. She watches this movie
like every few years. Actually,i've since now watch it. I've seen
it now a few different times, and I was more impressed each time I've
seen it. All the performances aresuper good. Philip Baker Hall in it

(29:25):
is awesome. Malura Walters is amazingin it talking about music and everything.
It's Amy Mann's soundtrack for it isawesome. But anyway, getting back to
your question about like Paul Thomas Andersonrecently, over the last couple of years,
the movie is like two hours andforty five minutes. He said,

(29:48):
if he were making that movie now, he probably chop off an hour of
it. You could, Yeah, definitely could. But it's actually funny you
mentioned when I first saw it,I was like eh, and then I
went back and I rewatched it,like whatever ten years later, and it
just like had it. It grabsme, It grips you up and it's
hard to get out. Yeah. Now, there's so many things about it

(30:08):
that I won't reveal, but there'sjust so many different scenes in there that
but it's almost like it's kind oflike a baby reindeer where it's like I
don't know if I liked it ordidn't like it. There's cringe scenes,
yeah, yeah, there's definitely there'sthere's awkward scenes in there. Oh,
Philip seymour Hoff and I his performancein there, it was awesome. Yeah,

(30:30):
it's it's a tremendous movie. Andif you don't have some type of
emotional response to Tom Cruise Jason Roardscenes, yeah you have no soul y
Yeah great, great, great,we're all in a creaming on that man.
Yeah. All right, so mythird are on me? You think
so? So my third and finalI mean I have all the ones that

(30:52):
I could discuss, but uh sothis movie was released in nineteen eighty one,
directed by Walter Hill, who wenton to a direct a lot of
you know, pretty cool action movies. This one stars Powers Booth, fred
Ward, Keith Carrodine and it's calledSouthern Comfort. I couldn't remember the title.

(31:18):
Yeah, describing it, it definitelyhas like a little deliberancy feel to
It's about some National guardsmans that areon you know, just on like a
patrol and you know, down inthe bayou and stuff like that, and
they start messing with some locals downthere and they will have like blanks in
their guns and uh anyway, sothings go south pretty quickly for them,

(31:42):
and they all start to get hunteddown one by one and it's just this
great story of survival and but Iremember what sticks with me is the last
actually like ten minutes of the movie, when it's kind of the two surviving
characters are there and they're trying toget out through this little bayou town and
you know that got the helicopter flyingover, which is like that basically saving

(32:05):
them, and it's pretty intense.Intense. The whole movie is intense,
but it's a it's really dark andkind of a creepy movie. It's you
know, it's it was really cool. It just stood out to me a
time. I think I saw himon Prism or something like that. Reference.
Yeah, it's how old I am, but I remember seeing it there.
I was like, oh my god, that was an amazing movie.
My twelve year old voice said, but yeah, the voice, yeah it

(32:30):
was. Well, it was atotally different person at the time. Yeah.
But yeah. So that was that'smy third h my third undiscovered gem
or forgotten gem. Southern Comfort.Good good. Have you guys seen it?
I saw a very long time ago. Again, it would have to
be one that I would I needto see again. But I remember enjoying

(32:50):
it when I saw it. Yeah, I was way too young to see
Yeah, oh right, yeah,I was yea because there it was a
violent movie. It's very violent, very bloody, you know for that time.
Yeah, a lot of people getshot and yeah, butchered a little
bit. But yeah, but thelast scene is like sort of a montage
of them trying to wind through thislittle you know, bayou village and they're
being shot at and you're shooting backat the people that are, but all

(33:14):
the wild there's like, you know, banjos and stuff playing in the backgrounds,
like a party going on. That'sthe background music to what's happening.
It's yeah, it's super cool.Wow on my radar? Yeah, I
don't know. Yeah, what doyou got? Tom? I think Europe?
I will it's a birthday boy.That's alright, I follow rules.
I don't my last one, Icertainly could come up with more, although

(33:38):
Tom and path right, don't thinkthat's a whole back story was four months
Mine is this twenty ten gem calledBeginners by Raider director Mike Mills, who
hasn't done too many other movies. He did one a few years later called

(34:01):
Come On, Come On, whichis very good. Yeah, very very
good. I think we talked aboutthat on a previous podcast. But this
one, Beginners has Ewan McGregor init. You McGregor's very very good,
very understated in this movie, veryrepressed actually, and Christopher Plumber did get

(34:22):
nominated for Best Supporting Actor in thisand he won. But a lot of
people don't talk about this movie, but it's really about relationships and just trying
to like make it in a relationship. It's not a romantic comedy. It's
really just about how a relationship canstart, the the sort of pains that

(34:44):
you go through. And it's reallyunderrated, very very good, very emotional
story, and I think it's oneof probably one of Ewan McGregor's best performances.
So yeah, I highly recommend thathe's always I mean, I don't
know if he's made well, that'snot true. I don't know if he
he's been bad in a movie, even like A Lifeless Ordinary, which was
you know, probably not greatly received, but he was good in it.

(35:07):
He was good. I actually thinkthat's underrated. Yeah, that could make
the list. Didn't make my list, but now that we're talking about it,
could definitely be on it. Yeah. I enjoyed the movie, but
you know, it was definitely amiss box office wise. Right, Yeah,
Tom, what's your uh, what'syour last one? Well? I
went to nineteen eighty nine, whichwas your year that you picked the best
years of movies ever. So Iactually, uh, as heavy as Magnoia

(35:31):
was, I went the opposite directionand I went comedy. And to me,
this is a comedy that is justan original story, right, and
here's the cast. Let me knowif you guys know what movie this is?
This is also this is not RapidFire trigger ready it doesn't count.
Michael Keaton, Peter Boyle, StephenFirst and Christopher Boyle. Yes, a

(35:51):
dream Team, Yes, yes,the dream Team is Wow. Yes,
nobody talks about it. It fliesbelow radar. It's such just like an
interesting story of listener if you're notyou know, familiar for mental patients go
on a field trip to New Yorkand I believe it was their counselor or
doctor whoever gets caught up, likegets witnessed to like an accident or something,

(36:15):
but he ends up in the hospital. So now they're like on the
they're just loose in New York tryingto find him. And I'm telling you
they probably couldn't make that movie toyou, probably couldn't make it today.
But Peter Boyle and Christopher Lloyd andMichael Keaton just kill it in first to
right. Yeah, yeah, that'sAlbert yell or not to speak Albert Yeah,
yeah, beginning, Yes, that'sright, because they want to go

(36:37):
see they're gonna go see a baseballgame. They're gonna see a baseball yeah,
yeah, exactly, Yeah, Iremember Lloyd is thinks he's a doctor,
right, yeah, which is incredible. Peter Boyle, he's got a
god complex. He thinks he's Jesus, yes, right, Yeah. There's
a scene in the hospital where hewalks up to a patient says, rise

(36:57):
my son and walk and the guytry to it he falls right down.
It's just like so funny. I'mlike, if you haven't seen, it's
worth a lighthearted watch. Yeah,no, absolutely, but it's got hard.
That was the thing that It's gota lot of heart to it.
It was definitely a funny movie. But to me, movies like that,
like those are just a good, well written, thought out jokes that land
like a lot of the comedy nowadaysis just like in your face, like

(37:21):
stupid humor. Right absolutely, yeah, and it had which is fine,
But like this is like an originalstoryline that someone came up with with depth
to it. Yeah, unlike Frosted, like Frosted, sorry, rich is
Frosted. Richard Jenkins was the heavy, one of the heavies in there,
the bad guys, I think inJames remar Man, James Remore always played

(37:42):
a good bad guy. Yeah,he was good. Richard Jenkin is just
always good. He's always good. You know what else came out around that
time. Remember The Burbs, Yeah, that was gonna be it. It
was kind of like, you know, on a list of potential underrated gymps.
I love that movie. That isone that. So we're talking about
these underrated movies. That's one thatwhen it came out in nineteen eighty nine,
people it didn't do that well tothe box office, Joe Dante movie,

(38:06):
and it got critically lamb basted prettymuch. But now years later people
are like, it's pretty pretty good. Yeah. Yeah, when Tom Hanks
and Corey Feldman and there what acombine, right, the teaming of the
the original voice of Donatello and teenagethere you go. Yeah, Carrie Fisher
as well. Yeah, no,it was a great cast. Yeah,

(38:28):
yeah, definitely fellas. Yeah,I believe it's time for Rapid Fire Trivius
on the same team or we'll goon the same team, same team whatever.
Yeah, So we were talking aboutunderrated film. So I did look
up IMDb's uh top one hundred underratedfilms of all time. This is why
Tom is so good. He doeshis research, does research. Let me

(38:49):
give you a couple of clues.Chime in when you know what the film
is all right, first film andthis all three are in the top twenty.
Right, so this film actually wasnumber three underrated film according to IMDBA.
Debuted in nineteen eighty nine, DreamTeam directed directed by Roberts Mechus.
I'm a sequel. Wow, wecan't we can't leave dead air, so

(39:14):
we have to think. Okay, wait, it was a s sequel.
It's not Back to the Future too. It is back to the Future too.
Oow Okay, I was thinking toget no, I was, yeah,
I thought, like, I mean, he did Back to the Future
too, but what else did hedirect at that time? That's so I
wouldn't even even thought. That's ontheir underrated It's a number three underrated movie

(39:37):
of all time? Wow, howabout that all time? It's it's also
the most you know, unnecessary secretprobably ever. Don't get he started.
No, I'm just saying back tothe Future too hard. But I mean
I'm still the one's the best.I'll go one one. I actually enjoyed
the series. I thought they werefine, but when you think about it
the whole it undid all of numberone. Well that and just that,

(40:00):
oh, hey, your kids aregoing to be jerks when they get older,
Like, all right, cool, that's good to know. So we'll
just take the proper steps to makesure they don't become jerks. I mean,
you don't have a movie then, but like, why would they have
to go to the future? Sure? Right, yeah, just raise your
kids, right. I just inTemple University Film School, which Pat and

(40:21):
I both went to, there wasone kid in one of my film classes
who swore that Back to the FuturePart two was the greatest movie ever created.
When they go back to nineteen fiftyfive and they're slicing from part one,
that is pretty yeah, yeah, good filming. And then doc and
Back from the Future. Great Scott, that's the second Christopher Lloyd though,

(40:45):
yeah, look at that, allright? Right? Even next one debuted
in two thousand and five. I'ma remake. One of the stars is
Jack Black. Two thousand and fiveA remake. One of the stars.
One of the stars is Jack Black. I give it if I give you
the direct Probably not a lead though, maybe maybe that's where we're going on

(41:06):
like this, maybe yeah, he'sin the three or four spot. Huh.
This movie five five over three hourslong. Remake over three hours directed
by Peter Jackson, oh Christ,I'm sorry. Yeah that came in.
Oh yeah, and I think Kongshows up at two forty five? Yeah

(41:28):
doesn't. Yeah, yes, yesthat's true. That's an under that.
Really I look at this interesting. No, I believe I believe you.
All right, Here we go.Last one debut at nineteen forty eight,
directed by Alfred Hitchcock. James Stewartstars. The title is one word rope.
That's great movie. That's a greatI actually haven't seen that of all

(41:51):
the Hitchcock colms I've seen over Imean I haven't seen it in crazy long
time. But shot in ten minutetakes. Really yeah, fun fact and
better than The Citizen Kings based onall the low murders. It's a it's
a really good movie. Real quick, you close out. I went the
opposite direction and looked up the mostoverrated movies of all time? Do you

(42:15):
think comes in at number one? Most overrated? No, no Titanics on
the list, but down there,Oh right, so the most overrated films
of all time? Number one?Gump Now not com I mean I love
Gump. I actually you know thismight be a hot take. What I
like, totally agree with this numberone spot, all right, give two
thousand and eight. It's a sequel. It's in the I guess the DC

(42:39):
universe, so to speak, itwould be DC two thousand and eight.
Uh, I don't know. Jeez, I can now you're you're close.
I can edit out the Man ofSteel. No, No, you're you're
you're Batman begains. What came afterthat? The Dark Knight? Yeah?

(43:01):
Really, and you think it's overrated, yes, totally. The only thing
I'll say, and I'm not agreeingwith you, but I'll say the end
of the movie, when we thengo into the whole two face thing,
felt like they somehow needed more tohappen when I thought there was a lot
of great stuff. So I didthink, if you trim some of that

(43:22):
down, you have a perfect movie. I don't know if i'd call it
overrated, but I don't think it'sperfect. I thoroughly like Batman Begins so
much better than The Dark Knight.Really, I will take Batman Begins over
a Dark Knight. I thought theway Batman Begins was filmed, and the
actually the pace of the whole film. I do agree with you if they
trim up some crap out of TheDark Knight. Yeah, it just becomes

(43:44):
like a different movie at the endof a movie. We it just ended.
Yeah, you know, so it'sinteresting. I got that's great.
That is great. What a hottake from Tom Yew controversial. Dark Knight
is unfrosted in my book. Wow, oh aims Cate Blanchett, don't call

(44:05):
in about that one. Okay.We still love the Dark Night, well
some of us do, any Yeah, all right, Wow, that was
a great episode. Yeah, thatwas good. Underrated episode on the news
boom. Alright, well, probablytwenty minutes when you're done hutting it,
I'm taking out. No, itdoes good. We had a great open,

(44:28):
I know that great cold open.Give us a good clothes all right,
bring it home, don't birthday boy, it's a brand new Sorry,
I got a new mic. Theseguys are great. I love them both.
They gave me gifts and that's notthe only reason I know, but
it helps, but it helps.Yeah. So if you want me to
love you, give me gifts. But no, tonight, we're we're all

(44:50):
happy that you're here to hear us. It's just nobody's here. Who are
you sitting over in that corner?Just some some Hartley's over there. Wow.
Yeah, he's back. I broughthim all right, So for now,
I think we're gonna sign off onthis episode. Do you have anything
else you'd like to add? Tomor Pat? I'm good, I'm good.

(45:13):
Alright, still next time. Untilnext time, This is another fine
