Speaker 1 (00:01):
Wait a minute, have you heard the strange tales of
the Whistler.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
I'm the whistler.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
You cops are going to be on the scene of
a crime instead of coming in after it's all over.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Tonight, I'm going to do a little exterminating.
Speaker 5 (00:39):
Sunday night and again CBS presents the Whistler.
Speaker 6 (00:52):
I the Whistler know many things, for I walk by night.
I know many strange tales, many secrets hidden in the
hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows.
And so I tell you to night the Story of
the Double Cross. It is Christmas Eve in the big,
(01:13):
lonely city of New York. Outside the snow falls in
huge floating flakes. Inside an apartment, young Joe Blake sits
on the floor before a small Christmas tree with his
four year old nephew, Timmy. Joe's sister died two years ago,
and for a while the child's father tried to look
after Timmy, but being a detective lieutenant, the father, Steve,
(01:35):
found it almost impossible. A year ago, young Joe had
become involved with some hoodlums and would have gone to
reform school, but for Steve's intercession, Joe has kept out
of trouble since then and has been living with Steve
and taking care of the apartment and little Timmy.
Speaker 7 (01:55):
When will Santa Claus.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Come, Uncle Joe, Well, I don't think you're come until
you go to sleep, Timmy.
Speaker 7 (02:00):
Is he gonna get in?
Speaker 4 (02:01):
He comes down the chimney? Chimney, I never thought of that. Well,
maybe it comes to the window.
Speaker 7 (02:07):
They're all locked, Uncle Joe.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
I'll open one after you go to bed. Kid, you'll
get in. Don't worry about that. The biggest one biggas
And why oh I.
Speaker 7 (02:16):
Saw a Center Claus and he's fat. And a pony
is big too.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Oh, I see, Well I don't know about the pony, Timmy,
and the scarce these days. Huh, ponies are kind of
kind of extinct.
Speaker 7 (02:30):
Well, I could keep my window open. No one would
smell him.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Wouldn't you like to have a train just as well
if you don't get a pony? Huh had a boy? Timmy, Oh,
you better go to bed now. It's after eleven and
old Nick won't come, And I say, sure, you're asleep.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
How about it?
Speaker 7 (02:46):
When is Daddy coming?
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Oh, he'll be long sin. Come on, Timmy, you're gonna
turn in here. We are tucked in.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Fine, don't forget to open the window, high.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Wald, I'll open them all. Police calls on the other
end of the dial. Joe, huh oh, hello, Steve, I
didn't hear you come in. Let me help you. I
(03:23):
was looking for the police call. No, I just put
Timmy to bed. Why so late? Oh?
Speaker 3 (03:28):
He wanted to see Santa Claus. He's going to be
kind of disappointed in the morning.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
How soon. That's a pony? Well maybe you can buy
him one, Joe? Are you kidding?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
No?
Speaker 8 (03:38):
I don't get it. This matter with you, Steve. Something
go wrong tonight. Have you been here all evening?
Speaker 9 (03:43):
Why?
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Sure? Haven't been out?
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Don't I always stay with Timmy when you work late?
He didn't slip out for an hour or so while
Timmy was asleep. No, why should I? But you could have?
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Sure I could, But I didn't. Joe.
Speaker 8 (03:54):
When I got you out of that last scrape, I
did it because I had a lot of faith in
you and your promises.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
I still don't get it.
Speaker 8 (04:00):
I was the one who got you that relief chap,
and at the popping store I vouched for you.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
I know that. What about it?
Speaker 8 (04:07):
Somebody open the store is safe tonight, somebody would slick fingers,
sensitive fingers like like yours, Joe.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
What why I'm near the store since noon? You sure
certainly I'm not crazy. I've had my lesson. I wish
I could believe that.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
I swear I haven't been out of this house.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Why should you try to pin anything like this on
me just because I'm well, I'm working there during the
holiday season.
Speaker 8 (04:30):
I'm not trying to pin anything on you, just as
all the air offs of your abilities to open a safe.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
That's not fair, Steve. I'm true with that kind of stuff.
I got plans. I'm gonna make something useful on myself.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
You're sure you weren't out of this place. I swear
I wasn't, Steve, I swear it.
Speaker 8 (04:45):
Okay, I'll take a chance on it. I'm not on
the case, but I heard about it.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Now.
Speaker 8 (04:50):
Look, they'll start checking on all the records of guys
like you, and they'll probably drop around to see it tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
I didn't need the house, Steve, I didn't, okay, but
you got to have an alibi. Oh Timmy was here.
Timmy's a baby would count? Oh hello, Steve, why evening?
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Captain?
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Come Onney? In. Eh, you know my brother in law, Joe? Yeah,
I remember him. What can I do for you? Sit down?
Speaker 8 (05:15):
I was just ready to turn in, but sitting around
reading for a couple of hours kind of drowsy.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
Eh. How long you been here, Steve? Oh? I got
off duty at eight and home since eight thirty. Why
how long has Joe been here? He was here when
I came in. He's been here all evening. Hasn't been out?
Certainly not? What are you getting at, Captain? Joe's been
working mornings at Shelby's department store, isn't he? Yeah? Yeah,
that's right. All They're Safe was open tonight around nine thirty.
(05:40):
They closed at seven thirty. I thought we'd check up
on the boys with sensitive fingers. Joe.
Speaker 8 (05:46):
Why he hasn't been out of the house. I'll swear
to that you will, certainly I will. Joe's through with
that kind of stuff.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
Yeah. Then how would you explain this, Steve? Would you
get that cigarette case? Wait a minute, let's see sure
we found it beside the safe. Joe.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
This is the case your sister gave you a year
before last.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Hey had your name engraved on it.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Yeah, but how did get there? I've never been near
the store safe. No, I suppose you just lost it someone.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
When did you see that case last Joey, I had
it this morning. As a matter of fact, I hadn't
missed it. Do you expect me to believe that, Steve? No,
you expect me to believe that you were here all evening? No,
you dirty little red It did pull let you out? No, No,
I swear I didn't see if I swear? No, what
this means, Steve? You haven't been here all evening? You're lying.
(06:38):
You're trying to furnish an alibi for Joe. Do you
know what that means?
Speaker 8 (06:40):
Yes, I know what it means. Sneaking little crook. I
believed in him. Get him out of here, Get him.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Out before I break us next, Steve, Please letten hell
be hearing about you, Steve in the morning.
Speaker 6 (06:58):
But Joe can't explain how his cigarette case happened to
be near the safe. He remembers having lunch with a
few of the old gang. Maybe it disappeared there, but
nothing can be proved. So Joe's convicted and sent to
prison for two years. Steve is discharged from the police
force and goes into seclusion. His heart filled with bitter
(07:21):
hatred for Joe. Two years passed and Joe was released,
determined to make a success of his life regardless of
his past. Steve has disappeared, but Joe meets Della Kenton,
daughter of wealthy John Kenton. Della persuades her father to
engage Joe as his secretary.
Speaker 9 (07:43):
Guess who, Darling?
Speaker 4 (07:45):
Why? I can't imagine, but if I could, I guess
it was Bella.
Speaker 9 (07:49):
Well, you'd guess right. Are you going to type all day, Joseph?
Speaker 4 (07:52):
No, not all day, darling. I'll be thrown a few minutes.
Speaker 9 (07:54):
I've got a message for you. I knew you were busy,
so I answered the phone. It was a man, Thank Heaven,
and he said I had to tell you that he
located your friend Steve.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
What did you get the address?
Speaker 9 (08:03):
Yes, darling, but don't get so excited here. It is
four fifty four East seventeenth Street. That's certainly a dilapidated
part of town. Whom do you know who lives there?
Speaker 5 (08:14):
Well?
Speaker 3 (08:14):
I used to know. I'm trying to locate him for
two years. This is a sort of a cheap locality,
isn't it me? I go with you, oh, darling, I'd
rather you didn't.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
I'll be gone long, I hope not.
Speaker 9 (08:24):
And don't forget. Father is arriving on the midnight train
and he expects us to meet him. Yeah, I remember,
I'll be back, So all right, darling, I'll be ready, Salondella,
just a moment. Haven't you forgotten something?
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Have I?
Speaker 9 (08:35):
What? Are you a married man?
Speaker 4 (08:37):
Certainly not? That is not yet.
Speaker 9 (08:40):
Well, they don't act so much like one. Come back
here and kiss me.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
I'm sorry still, Adela, Darling, I'm so excited I forgot
right there.
Speaker 6 (08:49):
Hmm.
Speaker 9 (08:49):
That's better. Now you can go go on.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
I won't be gone long.
Speaker 9 (08:53):
I hope not, because I want to talk to you
about Christmas.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Christmas.
Speaker 9 (08:56):
Yes, we're going to give a Christmas party and I
want you to help me.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Yes, of course, I won't be long.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
Timmy, Well, well are you a baby?
Speaker 7 (09:18):
What do you want?
Speaker 5 (09:19):
What?
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Timmy? Don't you remember me? Is your uncle? Joe Gee?
Speaker 2 (09:24):
It's good to.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
See you, Google Joe Geez Joe by golly. I've been
looking for you and your dad ever since over a year.
Whereas your dad I don't know. Some place I guess, yeah,
how long you've been in this place?
Speaker 7 (09:40):
A long time?
Speaker 3 (09:41):
What's Steve doing. It's almost Christmas again, Timmy. Remember that
last Christmas when you wanted a pony? What did you
like to have most of this Christmas? How'd you like
a bicycle or a pair of skates?
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Hey? Hey, what's wrong, Timmy? You're crying.
Speaker 7 (10:00):
I I'd like to have a bicycle.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
See what are you doing in bed at this time
of the afternoon.
Speaker 7 (10:06):
I couldn't ride a bicycle, Timmy.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
What is it? Tell me? Babby?
Speaker 7 (10:11):
I don't know, Uncle Joel, I just can't walk.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
When did this happen last summer?
Speaker 7 (10:17):
First my foot wouldn't work, Then my leg wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
Work, Timmy.
Speaker 7 (10:22):
But I'll be all right pretty soon, as soon as
Pop gets some money for the operation.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
Of course you will, Timmy. You'll be all right in
no time at all. Well, that must be Steve. Now
i'll close your door for a minute, Timmy, I want
to talk to Steve.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
You'll come back, Uncle Joe, Yeah, I'll be back a
lot now, Hello, Steve?
Speaker 4 (10:41):
What are you doing here? I'll let you win. I
walked in, the door was open. Let's still open. Get out.
I've been looking for you ever since I got out.
What for? I wanted to explain? Things. I'm sorry about
what happened to you, Steve.
Speaker 8 (10:54):
I don't want any explanations. And what's wrong with Timmy?
How you going like you've been drinking a lot?
Speaker 4 (11:01):
Steve? So you wouldn't be living in a place like
this if you were working. I'm getting by all right.
What about Timmy's operation? Can you take care of that?
Speaker 8 (11:09):
I will, I will. Maybe I could help, Steve. Well,
you've even a little red. I wouldn't take anything from
you if Timmy and I both stopped at it.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Don't be a fool, Steve. I haven't got anything, but
I may be able to raise some money.
Speaker 8 (11:19):
Oh, open another safe. I get out of here before
I throw you out. You're drunks.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
I'm not drunking. I don't need you. Get out, Okay, Steve, Okay,
i'll go.
Speaker 8 (11:31):
But if you don't care about Timmy, I hell, lord,
Timmy's gotta be operated on within thirty days.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
It'll take two thousand dollars, maybe more, and I'll get it.
I won't steal it the way you would, and I'll
get it. I get out of here. If I brain you.
It's a long Steve. I'll be seeing you.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
Dusk has descended as Joe leaves the cheap apartment and
drives to the palatial estate of his fiance Della. He
has decided to ask Della's father to lend him the
two thousand dollars. As he turns into the drive, a
man steps out beside the gates and stands before his car.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
What do you want? I want to talk to you, Joe.
Who are you?
Speaker 7 (12:16):
Freddie Elsie?
Speaker 4 (12:18):
You remember me?
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Joe?
Speaker 4 (12:19):
What do you want? Buddy? Mike Slavite wants to that
little gam fast with you. Mike Slavage? Where's he? Turn
out your lights and turn out your money? What are
you doing here, Mike? I'll tell you how you Joe?
Speaker 2 (12:29):
How you doing?
Speaker 4 (12:31):
What are you doing around here? Mike?
Speaker 10 (12:32):
I want to talk to you. Mind if I get in.
You've been doing all right since you get out, having you, Joe?
Speaker 4 (12:39):
Well enough?
Speaker 10 (12:40):
I'll see living in this big joint gage to a
man Kenton's daughter. That's what I call climbing the old
man's secretary, and she yeah, I'll get to the point.
Old man Kenton's got a safe in that house. It's
got a lot of rocks in it.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
What about it?
Speaker 10 (12:52):
We thought you might help us get them. You know
the combination of the safe.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
You're crazy, I wouldn't think of it.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
We could change a mind, couldn't we fair?
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Yeah, more ways than work. Get out of this car.
Speaker 10 (13:03):
You don't scare Angela. No, but we mean business. That
don't scare you. Maybe something else will think. So we
know a quiet little spot. No one would find you
for weeks.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
If ever.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Well, a real gun, shoulder holdstir and everything you come
along way since we were kids. Mike started out of
cap pistols and not a real thing.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Eh.
Speaker 11 (13:24):
All you do is squeeze it and sports lead instead
of ward. How far do you think you'd get if
you did squeeze it.
Speaker 10 (13:29):
We've never been pinched yet, no record, no finger prints,
no nothing.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
First time for everything. Huh cigarette Mike? Yeah?
Speaker 11 (13:41):
Thanks, Joe, Oh, get a load of a cigarette case,
Freddy Joseph from Della Fancy Stuff.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
Well, how about it, Joe, looks like I'm stuck. I
think you guys mean business. What's your plan?
Speaker 2 (14:00):
Old man?
Speaker 10 (14:00):
Kitten's out of turn? We walk in with you, you open
the safe, take the rocks and we all leave, all leave.
We'll take you with us. We'll head that for days,
soonly start looking for you you'll be accused.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
You know how.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Wait a mo morn, get gone, Joe, out of that
car and up the drive. Open it up, Joe, quit stalling.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
Okay, okay, it's open.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Hand me the stuff here you are, hey, now, let's go.
Are you in the library there and talk to her?
And you're leaving town for a few days. No monkey
business will be watching.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Oh yes, della, I'll be right out. Where have you been, Darling?
Speaker 7 (14:38):
We've got to meet that.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Tree till I was well, I'm sorry, but you'll have
to meet your father alone. I got to run out
of town tonight on business.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
I'll be back in a few days.
Speaker 9 (14:50):
Well when did this come up?
Speaker 4 (14:52):
Just a few minutes ago? I'm going to drive.
Speaker 9 (14:54):
Well, all right, darling, if you must, will you be
back in time for the Christmas party?
Speaker 4 (15:00):
I hope so?
Speaker 9 (15:00):
Dylla, Well, i'd better get to the station. The train
will be in a few minutes.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (15:05):
Goodbye there, goodbye, and take care of yourself, Joseph.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
I'll try, Darling.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Soon she gets out the drive, we'll leave. Let me
take my croft ready, I'll drive with Joe.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Come on.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Now.
Speaker 6 (15:24):
Two days later, the story of the jewel theft breaks
in the newspapers. Joe Blake is suspected an old man.
Kenton has offered a reward for the recovery of the
stones an apprehension of Joe.
Speaker 4 (15:36):
Gee Mike.
Speaker 10 (15:37):
He's offering ten thousand dollars for the recovery of the
rocks and twenty five hundred for the cancer of Joe.
Speaker 11 (15:42):
I see, I see well, lailo for a few more days,
then skip the Chicago and unload this stuff.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
Why do that? You got a better deal right here
in town.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
How do you mean, Joe?
Speaker 3 (15:52):
You'd make a lot more by collecting this reward than
you would from a fence out of town.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
You mean we go back to Kenton and hand over
the stuff? Why not?
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Not a bad idea. We'd have to take you with
us and turn in.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Certainly you'd have to do that to prove all you
found the jewels.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
What's your plan?
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (16:09):
Look, you guys are a couple of private detectives, and
you read about the rewards. See he just happened to
spot me and grab me, brought me back to Kenton,
turn over the stuff, and he pays off.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
I'll make a break for the door.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
You got to take a few shots at me to
make it look real, which is shoot wild. I got
away and later on, when the coast is clear, I'll
drop around. I believe you on the clear, and I
don't get locked up.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
I think it's a nutty idea. What if it don't work?
Shut up?
Speaker 2 (16:38):
That ain't a bad idea, Joe, and take you up one.
Speaker 11 (16:42):
That So, mister Kenton, me and my partner right about
the theft and saw this guy's picture and happened to
spot him in this lunch room.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
So we nabbed it. Well, here he is, and there's
all your jewelry here is.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Is this all here? Every betterment? Take it over, della.
See if your jewels are all there?
Speaker 9 (17:09):
Yes, father, nothing of mine is missing.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Very well, I suppose you want the reward.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
Well, after all, I'll give you this check for ten
thousand dollars the return of the stones, and I'll withhold
the twenty five hundred until he is booked by the
police and locked up.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
Well, okay, but we captured him. What more do you want?
Speaker 4 (17:31):
I prefer it that way.
Speaker 5 (17:33):
I want to be sure that he's locked up, and
if he gets out in twenty years it will be.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
Too soon for me.
Speaker 5 (17:38):
You certainly pull the wool over my eyes when I
think of Della might have married you an next convict.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
You can't always judge a book let's cover.
Speaker 9 (17:46):
It doesn't seem possible. I could have been such an
utter fool.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
You got a lot of things to learn, Della.
Speaker 9 (17:51):
The sooner you get him out of here, the better.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
Well, here's your check and a lone Della. He get
away back here, he's locked it from the other side.
Speaker 4 (18:03):
He won't get fired. I must have hit him.
Speaker 7 (18:05):
Call a police.
Speaker 4 (18:06):
Never mind, we'll get him twenty five hundred long stars.
Come on, Freddy, out this Winny. He won't get fired.
Do you think you hit him?
Speaker 9 (18:13):
Really?
Speaker 10 (18:14):
No, I missed him deliberately shot high. Now that I
think about it, I'm just a sap. That was our
chance to get rid of him, sort of legally. He
knows too much. I don't trust him, but we ain't
really costs or what. And he says, isn't gonna right
to catch a fugion. I come on, we're gonna get
that baby.
Speaker 6 (18:34):
Joe makes a getaway and heads for a little hotel
where he hides out for another day. Then the papers
break with another story, and Kenden has increased the reward
for Joe's capture. Joe studies this over for a while
and realizes the possibility of Mike's double crossing him.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
For the additional reward.
Speaker 6 (18:54):
He slips out for a while, then returns to his
room around eight in the evening.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
Who is it open? I'll kick it down, Steve? Well,
so here the red himself. What do you want, Steve?
What do you think? Are you back on the force? Steve?
Speaker 8 (19:16):
I will be when I get through with you. Because
of you, I got kicked out. Now you're the one
who's gonna set me back in harness again. Funny how
things work.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
Uh? Oh you know about the reward, do you? Yeah?
I do.
Speaker 8 (19:29):
Once a crook, always a crook. I knew you'd pull
something sooner or later. As Timmy, he's just going to
be fine in a few days. What do you mean
he can have that operation now?
Speaker 4 (19:41):
Oh good?
Speaker 8 (19:41):
I'm glad to hear that you're not half as glad
as I am. And the thing that pleases me most
is the way I'm getting the door.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
Boy.
Speaker 8 (19:48):
This rap is gonna send you away for twenty years.
So what get your hat and start walking, and don't
try that fade out stuff on me, because I like
you so much. I'd as soon plug is look at you.
(20:09):
Thanks mister Kenton, thanks very much. I wouldn't have come
out so soon. But well, it's money is a lifesaving
how's that, Bradley. My kid Timmy's got to have an
operation I did never sent. It has to be done
in a few days or he won't live. Checks a
real Christmas present.
Speaker 9 (20:25):
Mister Bradley. What do you think they will do with Joseph?
Speaker 4 (20:28):
Oh he'll get twenty years two time losing.
Speaker 7 (20:31):
What a shame.
Speaker 5 (20:32):
I had a lot of faith in that boy. So
the Della, I just can't understand that.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
There's been some others who felt that way. Who what
did he have to gain?
Speaker 5 (20:40):
He was engaged at Della, They could have had everything,
and he was very stupid.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
To do what he did. What do you mean, well, he.
Speaker 5 (20:47):
Took a chance on his life when he escaped from
this room. He knew those two men had guns. Good
thing for him that the big feller couldn't shoot straight.
Speaker 4 (20:55):
They fired at it.
Speaker 9 (20:56):
The big man did as he went right through that door.
Speaker 5 (20:59):
A couple above the door, there are all three shots
near the ceiling.
Speaker 8 (21:03):
Yeah, yeah, I see, you know, I'd say there was
had a very good shooting. Or he had a gun
that kicked like a mule. It wasn't a big gun.
The snubnosed you, balbo snubnose not a service pistol.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
No, I'm sure it wasn't. And they drop in on
you in a few days, mister Kenton, certainly, Bradley anytime,
I want to ask you a few questions.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
Joe, did you collect the reward? I did last night?
As timmy? He went to the hospital this morning. Oh
that's swell gee, I'm glad. Well, what do you want
to know? He didn't pull his jab alone? Joe? How
did you arrive at that time? Who were those guys
who captured you? Said? They were private detectives.
Speaker 8 (21:47):
One of them was a swell shot. He placed every
slug in the same spot above the door deliberately. They
were in this with you, a gag to cut the
reward that was sure to be offered. Otherwise they'd popped
you in the doorway. You were to get away in
the nor meat later and share the proceeds. Yeah, But
in the meantime they changed their minds, Joe, and decided
to cut you out. They double crossed you. What do
you mean how do you suppose I knew where you
were hiding? That guy phoned me and tipped me off.
(22:09):
They figured they had no police record, nothing you could
say would implicate him.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
They're safe.
Speaker 8 (22:15):
Why attempt to shield a double cross it? That's just
what I figured those rats.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
To do night as well. Spill it, Joe, and determined
to crack this case. Yeah. What would happen if you
cracked this one and another one besides set you up
as a lieutenant again? Yeah? Okay, I was forced to
open that safe at the point of a gun. Tell
me another one, Joe.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
If you want to grab the other two guys, I'll
make a deal with you, a deal. Let me talk
to your fingerprint expert and get me out of this sell.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
Are you a kidding?
Speaker 8 (22:40):
I want you to take me to Old Man Kentons.
Is a Christmas Eve party going on there tonight.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
I wouldn't trust you across the hall.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
It means just as much to you as a does
of me, and probably more. I'll guarantee results.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
Okay, what's you're playing? I'll tell you on the way
off to the Kenton place.
Speaker 8 (22:54):
All right, A sergeant, let us out of here.
Speaker 9 (23:04):

the library.
Speaker 2 (23:07):

Miss Ketty.

Speaker 5 (23:22):
I'm having quite a number of guests here tonight, and
I've just received some disturbing news.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
Joe Blake has escaped Escapable Macro. He may make another
try to steal the jewels while we are occupied with
our guests.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
I see you want us to see that nothing happens.
Speaker 5 (23:38):
I want you fellas to stay here near the safe
and if he does come grab him.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
Sure, sure you won't have a thing to worry about. Good,
come along, Bella. I guess the beginning to die, all right, everybody,
don't make a move. Lay your guns on the desk. Boys, thanks,
Get on the other side of the room. Della, you
two kitten, things might happen.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
What's on your mind?
Speaker 3 (23:57):
Joe, put your hands flat on that desktop. Mike, you too, Freddy,
and keep them there. Make one moving. I'll trill you
both your dirty double crossing rats forced me to open
the safe at the point of a gun and dipped
off the cops sort.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
Of find me because you were afraid I might horn
in on the reward. This guy must be nuts. Mister Ketton,
which one of your phone Steve Bradley, Come on, I didn't, Joe.
I thought you was going to contact you, little dog.
But he's made Mike. I wanted to think I tipped
the cop shop. You did it, Freddy, You're the one honest, Joe.
I didn't. I didn't, Please Joe.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
K I'm really taking those jewels this time, but I
won't be bothered by Mike and Freddie.
Speaker 4 (24:30):

Speaker 3 (24:31):
I'm gonna place on right between your eyes, Freddy, right
between your eyes, sure bluffing, anybody move, I'll open the door.
Speaker 4 (24:42):
Hell on, mister Kenton. Hello Bradley, betrays Joe Blake at
the edge of your estate. I thought would look kin
just in time, Steve, put up your hands and step
into the room. What goes on here?
Speaker 3 (24:51):
The cops are gonna be in on the scene of
the crime instead of coming in after the crime's over.
I'm gonna take some jewels and do a little exterminating.
But first I'm gonna make these guys do a little talking.
I want to know which one of you guys tipped
off Steve about me. Say something, Mike, this guy's crazy.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
Says we made him steal the stuff.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
At the voice you heard on the phone, Steve, all
of you got to say, Freddy, it wasn't me, I
tell you it wasn't. It must be him. Yeah, certainly
sounds like it. I thought so, right between the eyes, Freddy, I.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
Please, Joe, don't he won't shoot? Hand over that gun. Joe,
give it a me. Sho, oh it is I trust you. Minutes.
You're crazy, Joe, You're crazy. I killed the cop. So
why should I worry about killing a couple of rats?
Like you? Start talking, Mike, tell him, you guys, force
me open that sat. You can't bluff me. There's no
proof of such a thing.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
No, all right, sergeant, check my fingerprints on the glass
top disc step on it. Yeah, sure, mister keatin. Look
at the second drawer of the safe. You'll find my
cigarette case wrapped in a handkerchief.
Speaker 4 (25:47):
What my, George, He's right.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
I put it there the night I opened the safe.
The sergeant compared the prince with the ones on the desktop.
I have my near that safe since the night the
stones disappeared.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
What do you try to pull, Joe? You have no
police record, Mike.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
I didn't want you to go through life like that,
so I fixed one up for you. Remember the night
you forced me into this. I offered you a cigarette.
Well you got a record now, Mike. Mike's prints on
the desk, check with the ones in the cigarette case.
How about that photo prince you found on that safe
I was supposed to have open several years ago.
Speaker 4 (26:18):
You brought him along. Shame Why they're all the same?
They all check Now, you guys start talking, go on,
tell it all. I'll tell nothing. I don't know what
you're talking about.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Right between the eyes, Freddy, right between the eyes.

you my cigarette case proves that, Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 4 (26:55):
All the minute. You're innocent, Joe. All right, hey you are, Steve.
You can get up now. Yeah, very nicely handled. Joe. Hey,
I thought you was. I've been Frey. Pour some water
on Freddy. Joe was using blanks. Joe, don't, Joe. I'll

Speaker 4 (27:39):
Well, there you are.
Speaker 6 (27:42):
Everything worked out very nicely, just as everything should but
seldom does. But there's something I should explain about the
person who tipped Steve off as to where to find Joe.
It wasn't Mike, and it wasn't Freddy. No, it was
Joe himself. It was Joe who phoned Steve, knowing it
(28:05):
would give Steve an impetus a new start in his
career of sleuthing. And it really worked, and it saved
Timmy's life and Joe's too for that matter.
