Speaker 1 (00:02):
Wait a minute, have you heard the strange tales of
the whistler.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
I'm the whistler.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
I refuse to accept the responsibility of the failure of
our marriage. I know who caused it, and I know
who she is. I refuse to give you up to her.
So I have made a decision.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
Another Sunday night, and again CBS presents the Whistler.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
I the whistler, know many things, for I walk by night.
I know many strange tales, many secrets hidden in the
hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows.
And so I tell you tonight, the unusual story of
the other Woman. Olivia Martin paces the floor of her bedroom.
(01:20):
She's been pacing for hours, and it is now long
past midnight. Her husband Fred Martin, did not come home
to dinner. He was detained at his office on business,
so he said. But Olivia knows that it isn't his
advertising business that detains him. And she knows too that
tonight will be the climax and the final crash of
(01:41):
their marriage, the end of everything for Olivia. She knows
what Fred is going to say tonight. For months, she
has been fearful of this moment and now it has.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Come, Olivia.
Speaker 6 (01:53):
You're awake, Yes, come in.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
I thought you might be asleep.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
How could I you know better than that.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
It's one o'clock, isn't it. Yes, Fred, I didn't realize
it was that late.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
You don't usually bother to see if I'm awake, don't I.
For the past two months you've passed right on to
your own room.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yes, yes, I guess I haven't.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Get your business settled.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Yes, yes, I had quite a bit to attend to.
Speaker 6 (02:21):
Have dinner at the club.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Oh uh, yes, at the club.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Then why didn't you answer my call? I had you paged?
They said you hadn't been there this evening.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Oh, perhaps I hadn't arrived yet.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Really, what did you want?
Speaker 6 (02:39):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
I don't remember now what I called you for.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
I say, well, I think I'll turn in. Good night, Olivia.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Why don't you say it? Say what but you came
here to say?
Speaker 1 (02:52):
What makes you think I had anything particular to say?
Speaker 3 (02:54):
I know, I don't know how, but I've known all
evening you were planning to tell me something when you
got here. That's nonsense, No, Fred, I've known for months
this was coming. I know what sort of business detained
you another woman?
Speaker 2 (03:08):
What first?
Speaker 3 (03:10):
I believed you. As the weeks passed and I realized
you were going colder, the whole thing became clear to me,
and I knew you were evading me, that you were
lying about those business appointments at night.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Go on.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
We've been married ten years, Fred, I've done everything humanly
possible to make our.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
Marriage a success.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Have you?
Speaker 6 (03:28):
I think I have, at least I have tried.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
That's your opinion, Olivia.
Speaker 6 (03:32):
Why didn't you come right out and tell me about
this woman at the very beginning?
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Why should i?
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Oh, Fred's say all over, I've tried not to believe.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Now, let's not have a scene, Olivia.
Speaker 6 (03:44):
Would you expect me to do laugh at all?
Speaker 1 (03:46):
No, not you, Olivia, certainly not you.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
I suppose you'll say it's all my fault. I'm to
blame for everything. It's well, isn't that what you're trying
to say?
Speaker 1 (03:55):
I haven't said anything.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Now, why don't you say something? Why do you beat
about the bush?
Speaker 6 (03:58):
You came here to say something very well, since you.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Put it that way, I will. I'm going out of
town tomorrow business. I'm sending my things to the club.
When I return, I intend to live there. Wait a minute, Olivia,
I haven't finished yet. I want you to get a
divorce on any ground you please, desertion or whatever you wish.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Divorce do you mean math?
Speaker 1 (04:19):
I do.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
Very well. That's the way you want it.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
There's nothing else I can do, No, Olivia, nothing. Good night.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
So Olivia solves herself to sleep. When morning comes, she
finds spread gone and the thing's already sent to the club.
All day she wanders aimlessly about the house like a
lost soul.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Then, as night.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
Falls and her loneliness increases, she has seized with a
horrible feeling of hopelessness. The strange depression comes aver and
she sits down at the desk and writes.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
A note Fred. The very thought of losing you, the
thought of divorce, the thought of giving you up for
another woman, is more than I can bear. The shame,
the disgrace, the scandal of it all, would, I know,
drive me insane. Regardless of what you may think, I
refuse to accept the responsibility of the favor of our marriage.
(05:23):
I know who caused it, and I know who she is.
You'd never be happy with the woman of her type.
You'd be throwing your life away. I refuse to give
you up to her, and so I have made a decision.
Good Bye, Fred, Olivia.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
Olivia addresses the note of Fred at his club, steps
out and drops it in the nearest mail walks. She
wanders about for a while, then returns to the empty house,
takes some sleeping tablets, and goes to bed. The next morning,
at Fred's office, Doris, Fred's private secretary is going over
some teethings.
Speaker 6 (06:08):
Yes, very well, plea on Hello, Yes, mister Goldberg, this
is Dors Hammond. Mister Martin's out of town for a
few days. Yes, well, Miss Bartow is head of the
art department. I'll have her check on it right away. Yes, yes, goodbye, Yes,
tell Rita Bartow to come in here. Please. Miss Barter
(06:30):
wasn't coming in today, she's staying home, has a bad call.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
I see, well, we'll send Jack Mallory in then.
Speaker 6 (06:35):
Yes, it's Hammond.
Speaker 7 (06:40):
Do you want to see me, Miss Hammond?
Speaker 6 (06:41):
Oh, yes, Jack, I understand Rita's ill isn't coming in today.
Speaker 7 (06:44):
No, I guess not.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Well.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Mister Goldberg over at Lake Laboratories wants to know which
ad she intended to run next week.
Speaker 7 (06:50):
Only Rita knows about that.
Speaker 6 (06:51):
Perhaps we'd better send them over to Rita's apartment and
have her select the one she wants to use.
Speaker 7 (06:55):
Very well, who shall I send?
Speaker 6 (06:59):
Well, I don't know about anyone who would rather go
on that errand than you Jack.
Speaker 7 (07:02):
Well, i'll go if you insist.
Speaker 6 (07:05):
I don't think I have to insist, especially where Rita
is concerned.
Speaker 7 (07:08):
All right, I'll run over there.
Speaker 6 (07:10):
I thought you would.
Speaker 7 (07:11):
Thanks to see you later.
Speaker 6 (07:24):
Hello, Rita. This is Doris Hammond. Heyes, Dorin. How do
you feel? Oh?
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Fair good?
Speaker 6 (07:30):
Mister Goldberg wants to know which ad you're selected for
next week. I'm sending Jack Mallory over with the layouts.
He should be there in a short while. Very well,
how I've forgotten which it was, and send Jack back
as soon as possible. He'll hang around all day. If
you don't, I will don't worry. Goodbye bye.
Speaker 7 (07:58):
Hello Rita. How do you feel? Oh?
Speaker 6 (08:01):
All right? Just didn't feel like coming to the office today.
Speaker 7 (08:04):
I thought you had a bad cold.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
No, not too bad. I'll be all right tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (08:09):
Mister Goldberg wants you to to select the layout from
next week. Here they are, Which do you want? Well?
Speaker 6 (08:15):
I planned on this one, but I think you should
make this section in red.
Speaker 7 (08:20):
Oh, I see that's easy. I'll fix it up in
a jiffy.
Speaker 6 (08:23):
Stands out better this way. We'll use this one for
the week following.
Speaker 7 (08:27):
Okay, you look mighty lovely reda things. Where were you
going all dressed up?
Speaker 6 (08:34):
Well, I've got to go out of town this afternoon
on that uh Henderson deal. I wanted to put it
over until next week, but mister Martin insisted that I
get it settled as soon as possible. I'll be back
on the afternoon playing tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (08:45):
You shouldn't be running around too much, darling.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
Well, I don't rarely have a cold. That's finess.
Speaker 7 (08:50):
You've had a lot of trouble with that in the
past year or so.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
Yes, there's nothing much can be done about it. I guess,
Thank Heavens, it only strikes me in winter.
Speaker 7 (08:58):
Why don't you try a change climate?
Speaker 6 (09:00):
Reader, change of climate?
Speaker 7 (09:02):
Huh? I should think you'd like California. I've always wanted
to go there. I've had an idea that I could
do very well. It's some nice jobs in the movie
art departments.
Speaker 6 (09:13):
I'm not interested in movies.
Speaker 7 (09:15):
I thought about going out there and settling down, buying
a nice little home and really enjoying life.
Speaker 6 (09:21):
Why should a bachelor do all that? You have ideas
about getting married? Jack?
Speaker 7 (09:27):
Yes, yes, I have read good.
Speaker 6 (09:31):
I'm glad to hear it.
Speaker 7 (09:33):
What time does your plane leave it?
Speaker 5 (09:34):
Two?
Speaker 7 (09:36):
How about a little lunch while you're waiting? Something warm? Really? Well,
I'll leave your bag here, we'll pick it up later.
All right, I've got something important to talk to you about.
Reader important. Yeah, I got a nice raise this week.
Speaker 6 (09:49):
That's fine, Jack.
Speaker 7 (09:51):
I wanna ask you a question about you and me? Yes,
go ahead, No, no, not now, come on, we'll talk
about it during lunch.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
Meanwhile, Olivia Martin, having made a decision and formulated a plan,
visits her husband's office and calls on Doris the Secretary.
Speaker 6 (10:18):
Good afternoon, miss Hammond. Oh, how how do you do?
Missus Martin? I was just going out to lunch. Would
you join me?
Speaker 3 (10:25):
I'm sorry, Miss Hammond, I'm afraid I haven't time. On
another hurry, I've a number of things to do this afternoon.
Speaker 6 (10:30):
Can I help you? I suppose you're quite busy or so?
My work is always double when Fredley's comes Fred Yes,
mister Martin, Oh, my husband, I spur It does seem
strange for an employee to call him Fred. But for
some reason I've gotten into the habit and can't seem
to break it. He doesn't seem to mind.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
However, that's so I can imagine he wouldn't. After all,
you're like, well, like one of the family, aren't you,
Miss Hammond.
Speaker 6 (10:56):
Yes, I've been here for two years.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
You've been, said private secretary for how long?
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Now?
Speaker 6 (11:01):
Almost a year? It doesn't seem that long.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Pleasant work, isn't it?
Speaker 6 (11:05):
Most interesting? You have no idea how soorbing this business
can be, Missus Martin, but.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
I realize it must have a certain amount of extremely
interesting moments.
Speaker 6 (11:14):
You should come around more often, Missus Martin.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
How right you are, things might have.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
Been different different, Yes, I mean if.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
I had taken an active interest in the business. Well,
at times it gets Robert Doll waiting at home, especially
on long evenings when your husband has to stay in
town on business.
Speaker 6 (11:34):
I suppose he lives rather Doll under those conditions.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Yes, but I mustn't take up to the time with
personal problems. I want you to have a check gird
for me for five hundred dollars.
Speaker 6 (11:44):
Very well, I'll return to it at once.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Have you heard from Bread since he left.
Speaker 6 (11:49):
No, I haven't he phoned me this morning?
Speaker 7 (11:52):
He did.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Yes, he left an important paper at home and he
knew I was flying to Detroit tonight to visit my relatives,
so he wants me to drop it off on a
Buffalo Buffalo.
Speaker 6 (12:02):
I thought he was in Boston.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Yes he was, but he had to rush over to Buffalo.
Some unexpected business came up, and he says he needs
you very badly.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
He wants me to come to Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Yes, I told him, I notify you and bring you
with me. I'll be leaving the airport about five thirty.
Can you meet me there or shall I pick you
up here?
Speaker 6 (12:21):
Well, i'll meet you at the airport. I'll have to
run home for a few minutes. Is there anything in
particular he wants me to bring? No, nothing with the
paper he left at home. Very well, I'll be at
the airport around five. Do you mind flying, miss Henny? No, no, doll,
that's good.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
My plane is a small cabin. Job might be a
little bumpy, but I'm rather a good pilot.
Speaker 6 (12:43):
I'll see you at five.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
Shortly afternoon, rains fall round two. The storm becomes heavier
than Jack would.
Speaker 6 (13:03):
Jack Mellory, Where on earth have you been? Do you
know what time it is?
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (13:06):
I'm sorry I got to talking and didn't realize they are.
Speaker 6 (13:09):
Well what about the layout? Did we the select one?
Speaker 7 (13:11):
Yeah? This one? She made a couple of changes in it.
So what change?
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (13:16):
Nothing important. Just one of this sections set up in red,
stands out better.
Speaker 6 (13:20):
Mm. Yes, so it does?
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Well?
Speaker 7 (13:24):
Uh d I'd better put it through right away. I
I'm sorry to have been select with it.
Speaker 6 (13:28):
I'm glad you got back with it before I left.
Speaker 7 (13:31):
Left? Where were you going?
Speaker 6 (13:33):
Mister martinphone? He wants me to join him in Buffalo?
Something important has come up Buffalo.
Speaker 7 (13:39):
I thought he was in Boston.
Speaker 6 (13:40):
Well, he had to run over there in a hurry.
Speaker 7 (13:42):
Buffalo strange?
Speaker 6 (13:46):
What's strange?
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Huh?
Speaker 7 (13:47):
Oh? Oh, well, I I mean his being in Buffalo.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
What's strange about it?
Speaker 7 (13:52):
Oh? I don't know. I suppose he could be in Buffalo.
Speaker 6 (13:55):
Huh? What the matter with you? Jack?
Speaker 7 (13:57):
All right? Or nothing? Nothing at all? It mean?
Speaker 6 (14:00):
Over here?
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Why?
Speaker 7 (14:03):
Why a little clothest? Wow? What's the matter?
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Well? Of all things?
Speaker 6 (14:10):
Now I've seen everything, You've actually had a drink? You
of old people?
Speaker 7 (14:15):
Well, I I don't approve of it as a rule.
But I walked back from Rita's place, and I got
my feet a little wet in the rain, felt kind
of chilly. I was afraid of his catching cold, so
I dropped in at the bar on the way back
and had a drink.
Speaker 6 (14:29):
Oh, I hope you don't get sick. Don't afford to
have you and Rita both out.
Speaker 7 (14:33):
Uh uh, that's right. A lot of work to be
done this week.
Speaker 6 (14:35):
Here, take all that top code. It's d it's damn.
Let me have it now, hang it over the radiot.
Speaker 7 (14:39):
It Well, what's wrong on earth?
Speaker 6 (14:44):
Did you do this? You stilled ink in front of
your coat?
Speaker 7 (14:47):
Yeah? Well, what do you know? A fine thing? I
just got it yesterday. I must have done that over
at Rita's when I I blocked that section and read.
Speaker 6 (14:56):
And you forget it all as soon as possible. Uh,
hand me a towel from that closet and dampen it.
Speaker 7 (15:01):
Oh, don't bother, Doris. I'll ever clean them.
Speaker 6 (15:03):
Get some of it out now. Thanks. It's me hard
to get off.
Speaker 7 (15:10):
It's probably dry than by now. The cleaners can get
it out.
Speaker 6 (15:14):
Strangers inc I ever, sup doesn't seem to be ink
more like blood if you ask me blood.
Speaker 7 (15:22):
Let me see it's strange. Let me see that layout
does seem a little darker than that's on the card.
Maybe the cloth has something to do with it. Perhaps
better let the cleaners worry about it. What time are
you leaving, Darris?
Speaker 6 (15:41):
In a few minutes, I'm flying from the airport around five.
Speaker 7 (15:44):
Well, good luck, Dories, see you in a few days.
Speaker 6 (15:47):
Thanks Jack, take care of yourself and lay off the liquor.
That's bad stuff to get started on.
Speaker 7 (15:53):
Are you kidding? What do you think?
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Or a few brief.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
Moments, Dora stands staring after Jack as he passes through
the door to the outer office.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Then she picks up the towel, studies it for a moment.
Speaker 5 (16:15):
Suddenly she tosses it into the desk drawer, leaves the
office and goes home. Then around five, Doris meets Olivia
at the airport.
Speaker 6 (16:26):
For missus Martin. Do you think we should try it tonight?
You mean you'd rather not know? Are you frightened? No? No,
I'm not exactly frightened. The color storm's pat what's wrong?
I don't really know nothing, I guess have nothing to
worry about. I've flown this plane in all kinds of weather. Yes,
of course, Well we're all sets. Let's climb in. I
(16:50):
wish I could have talked to Fred. I haven't the
slightest idea what this is all about.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
You'll know what it's all about in no time at all.
You'll get there in a couple of hours. Don't worry.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
How far are we coming now?
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (17:17):
I don't know about seventy five miles? I should say,
where are we? I can't see a thing. We're not
far from mont Cello. How can you tell? Cant can
you see that? Donor?
Speaker 8 (17:26):
No?
Speaker 6 (17:27):
Not too well? I'm flying by instrument. I hope we
don't run into a storm. Frankly, I don't like to
be in a plane during a storm. Well, I don't
know of anyone who really does. We could have taken
a train.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
We could have, but on this particular drift, I was
in somewhat of a hurry to get to my destination.
Tell me, Doris, uh, may I call you Doris?
Speaker 5 (17:51):
Er?
Speaker 7 (17:51):
Of course?
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Aren't you just a bit upset over this trip? What
do you mean just that?
Speaker 6 (17:57):
Do I see'em upset?
Speaker 1 (17:58):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (17:58):
You do?
Speaker 6 (18:00):
Something playing on your mind? Yes, if there is something
bothering me. So what is it? I'd rather not say.
A guilty conscience, yealdy conscience? Isn't that what it is?
What are you talking about? Are you looking forward to
a nice visit in Buffalo? I don't know. I don't
consider it a visit.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
It's part of my job, and a very pleasant job too.
I'm sure you'll miss the job that its attendant interests,
working late at night several nights a week with Fred.
Speaker 6 (18:32):
What do you mean by that? Why should I lose
my job? Your job isn't all you're going to lose.
Do you know what you're saying? Yes, and you know
what I'm talking about. Your crave bread isn't in Buffalo.
Where is it? I don't know. But wherever he is,
you'll never see him again, your little chief.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Put this plane down and let me out, your man,
I'm going to put it down, straight down.
Speaker 6 (18:48):
And it's no what Fed won't think you so? In fact,
the next time he sees you know you know you're
out of your mind.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
You can't do this. You can't, you can't.
Speaker 6 (19:00):
That he back the switch. I want me, I want
your must give me that key up the straight.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
By some strange quirk of fate, Olivia is foiled in
a planet of suicide and murder. A farmer rushes to
the crash finds Olivia thrown clear and still alive. Now
an hour later in the farmhouse, where.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Are you, fear, ma'am?
Speaker 1 (19:38):
What?
Speaker 6 (19:38):
Why? Who are you?
Speaker 2 (19:40):
I'm Doc Sanders, Doctor.
Speaker 6 (19:43):
Where am I.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Here on Jake Barrett's farm? I found your right after
the crash? Leave me your mighty lucky lucky What do
you mean? You were thrown clear when you hit the
tree tops, got off a few scratches and a couple
of rattling good bumps, but not a busted bone any place.
Speaker 6 (19:59):
Where where happened to my passenger?
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Well, I'm.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
Sorry to say she she's dead.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
Dead, She's dead. She wasn't as lucky as you. I.
I'm lucky, have I don't you think so?
Speaker 1 (20:17):
No?
Speaker 6 (20:18):
No, I don't. I'm not lucky. That isn't wow.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Now now I'm gonna take it easy.
Speaker 7 (20:25):
I know how you feel, but you couldn't help it, ma'am.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
These things just happen sometimes.
Speaker 6 (20:30):
No, no, they don't.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Just what were you going to say, ma'am?
Speaker 7 (20:35):
Nothing?
Speaker 3 (20:37):
I wasn't going to say anything.
Speaker 7 (20:40):
Oh, well, they located your husband, ma'am.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Jake's driving you back to New York tonight.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
You'll be all right.
Speaker 6 (20:55):
Well, Olivia, now you are on the spot.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
Your vicious plan it was only partly successful. Now you've
got to face fread and how are you going to
explain the situation? How are you going to explain Doris's
presence in your plane? Fred arrives in town and spends
a few hours at his club. Then in the morning
you visit Olivia.
Speaker 6 (21:17):
Hello Olivia, Oh Fred, it was terrible.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Yes, I know, I'm very sorry, Olivia.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
I don't know what happened, But all of a sudden,
the motor cut off. I couldn't find a clear spot
any place. I thought I saw a clearing, but it
was more trees, and with no motor, I couldn't pull up.
Speaker 7 (21:35):
You were very fortunate, yes, I suppose.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
So where were you going?
Speaker 6 (21:40):
Why?
Speaker 3 (21:41):
Well, after you left, I got to thinking things over,
and I just couldn't remain another night in this house alone,
so I decided.
Speaker 6 (21:47):
To to go to my sister's in Detroit for a while.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Why did you fly?
Speaker 6 (21:53):
I don't know. I just wanted to get away as
fast as possible.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Wasn't it a rather bad night for flying? No?
Speaker 6 (21:59):
I've flown in worse way. The storm it cleared, I.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Say, I was never so shocked in my life. No, no, no, no,
you couldn't help. But it was just one of those things.
I know how you feel. Dorris was a well she
was a lovely girl, a shame.
Speaker 6 (22:23):
Yes, she was young, had everything to live for. I
know how you must feel, Fred.
Speaker 7 (22:30):
Yes, a suddenly, miss Can you ever forgive me?
Speaker 2 (22:33):
Fred?
Speaker 3 (22:35):
Of course, Olivia, I never want to fly a plane again.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Never tell me. How did Doris happen to be with you?
Speaker 7 (22:42):
Where was she going?
Speaker 6 (22:43):
Why? Well, she said she wanted to visit some friend
in Buffalo. Asked me if I drop her off there?
Speaker 1 (22:49):
How did she know you were flying that way?
Speaker 3 (22:52):
Well, you see, I I went to your office and
told her I was going to Detroit and asked her
to draw some money for me.
Speaker 6 (23:00):
Told I'd be glad to put her down in Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (23:02):
That's all.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
I can't imagine why she'd leave the office in the
middle of the week to visit friends out of town.
It wasn't like Doris.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
Maybe she had some business to attend to on the side.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
Maybe I can't imagine what it might be.
Speaker 6 (23:15):
Maybe maybe it was personal business.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Possibly, Olivia, are you telling me the truth?
Speaker 3 (23:23):
Why? What do you mean?
Speaker 1 (23:25):
Have you told me the real reason you wanted to
leave town? Certainly, weren't you well running from something?
Speaker 6 (23:32):
What would I be running from?
Speaker 1 (23:33):
You were carrying out a plan? Weren't you plan?
Speaker 6 (23:35):
What plan?
Speaker 1 (23:36):
Didn't you have a definite idea in mind? When you
wrote that note to me?
Speaker 6 (23:39):
Note? Note?
Speaker 1 (23:40):
It seems you've forgotten the note? Why don't you tell
me the truth? Olivia?
Speaker 3 (23:46):
Yes, it's that I did make up in mind too
to do something terrible. I was going to kill her
and myself. I couldn't stand it any longer. But after
I mailed it to you, I seem to come to
my sense of that. I saw things clearly and realized
how awful such a thing would be. I I just
couldn't go through with it.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
So you decided to forget the idea and go on
to Detroit.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Yes, I swear I changed my mind about killing her.
I couldn't be a murderer.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
You really expect me to believe that?
Speaker 6 (24:14):
You must believe me, you must please. I know what
you think the note and everything that's happened.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
I know there's certainly definite evidence against you.
Speaker 6 (24:22):
Yes, Oh, Fred, I swear I didn't.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
That's easy to say, but the note is too convincing.
Speaker 6 (24:26):
Where is the note? You must destroy it? Don't tell
anyone about it, please, Red.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
What time was it when you visited my office?
Speaker 6 (24:32):
I don't know, about noon, I think.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
And you mailed the note the night before. Yes, and
you'd made up your mind to leave town. You went
to the office, told Doris about it and left.
Speaker 3 (24:41):
It five Yes, yes, that's right.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
And what did you do in the meantime?
Speaker 6 (24:46):
Why? I can't remember? And so confused?
Speaker 3 (24:50):
I went shopping for a while.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Are you sure?
Speaker 6 (24:53):
I don't know. I don't know, but I swear I
changed my plan by the time morning came.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
You're going to have a hard time proving all that.
Speaker 6 (24:59):
It's the truth. Why shouldn't they believe the truth?
Speaker 1 (25:01):
Circumstances all tie in too well. We had separated the
day before I moved to the club. Several people knew
about that, And in the note you said you knew
who the other woman was and stated clearly what you
intended to do about it.
Speaker 6 (25:13):
I know, I know?
Speaker 1 (25:14):
Then how else can the police look at it?
Speaker 6 (25:16):
Police? What do they know about it?
Speaker 1 (25:17):
They've been putting two and two together but the note.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
How do they know what's in the note?
Speaker 1 (25:21):
They were waiting for me when I got back from Boston.
They had already found the note. They showed it to me.
That's where you made your big mistake, Olivia.
Speaker 6 (25:29):
Fred They really think I killed her murdered?
Speaker 1 (25:32):
Did they do?
Speaker 6 (25:33):
What are they gonna do?
Speaker 1 (25:34):
The detectives are here now, they want to talk with you.
Speaker 6 (25:39):
Yes, sir, I'll be calm very well.
Speaker 1 (25:45):
I'll come in Captain Evans. Thank you, Olivia. This is
Captain Evans, and this is Lieutenant Davis.
Speaker 6 (25:53):
How do you do.
Speaker 7 (25:53):
Good morning, missus Martin.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
Did you, gentlemen, wish to see me.
Speaker 8 (25:58):
Yes, we'd like to ask you question.
Speaker 6 (26:01):
Yes, yes, of.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
Course, but I haven't done anything. I'm absolutely innocent.
Speaker 8 (26:06):
I yes, I know, Missus Martin. We don't want to
upset you. Just answer a few questions very well. Is
it true that your husband left you a few days
ago with the idea that you were to get a divorce. Yes,
he took up residence at his club.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Yes, you believe that your husband was in love with
another woman.
Speaker 6 (26:23):
I did.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
Did you know who that woman was?
Speaker 3 (26:27):
I I did.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Did you object to his leaving you? Getting a divorce?
Speaker 6 (26:32):
Yes, yes, I did.
Speaker 1 (26:33):
Well. After he left you, did you write this note
to him?
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Yes, yes, I wrote it, but you mailed it to
his club. Yes, next day you got some money.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
At his office.
Speaker 8 (26:44):
About noon and exactly five o'clock you took off from
your plane.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
Yes, but I'd changed my mind. I couldn't go through it,
and I didn't. I swear I didn't.
Speaker 8 (26:53):
Where were you, missus Martin between noon and five o'clock?
Speaker 3 (26:58):
I went about town, little shopping. I don't remember what
else I did.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
Can you proved where you were during that period?
Speaker 6 (27:05):
No, I don't see how I could.
Speaker 8 (27:07):
No one was with you during that time. Did you
frequent any establishment where you were known?
Speaker 6 (27:12):
No? No, I didn't. I saw no one I knew.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Are you sure, Olivia?
Speaker 6 (27:15):
I positive? What difference does it make where I was
between noon and five o'clock?
Speaker 8 (27:19):
It makes a lot of difference, because it was about
that hour that Rita Bartow was stabbed to death in
her apartment.
Speaker 3 (27:26):
Rida Barto, the head of the ost department.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
That's right.
Speaker 8 (27:30):
The weapons not been found and there were no clues
to the identity of the murderer. Accepting your note to
your husband.
Speaker 6 (27:38):
But Riada Barto, what have I to do with her.
Speaker 8 (27:41):
You said in your note here that you knew who
the woman was, Rita Bartow was the other woman?
Speaker 6 (27:48):
What then?
Speaker 2 (27:50):
Then?
Speaker 6 (27:50):
What about?
Speaker 1 (27:51):
What about?
Speaker 7 (27:51):
Who?
Speaker 1 (27:52):
What are you going to say?
Speaker 3 (27:54):
Nothing?
Speaker 6 (27:55):
I wasn't going to say anything.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Not oh yes you were, Olivia, Yes you were.
Speaker 5 (28:05):
You were going to say that you killed the wrong woman,
poor innocent Doris Hammond.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Of course we know you didn't kill.
Speaker 5 (28:11):
Ritobarto because Jack Mallory killed her when she turned him
down and said she was going to marry Fred Martin.
And Doris was the only one who knew about the
bloodstains on Jack's coat. She was the only one who
could have pinned it on Jack and cleared you, Olivia.
But Doris is dead now and you killed her, killed
the very one who could have saved you.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
What a shame.
Speaker 4 (28:55):
CBS has presented the Whistler Why next week, same time.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
Either whistler will return to tell you another unusual tale.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Good night.
Speaker 4 (29:13):
This is the Columbia Broadcasting System
