On August 17th, 2014, the body of fifteen year old Indigenous girl, Tina Fontaine, was recovered from the Red River in Winnipeg. She had been missing for eight days. On the day she was last seen alive, Tina encountered multiple people, including law enforcement officers, doctors, and her assigned worker from Child and Family Services, who could have put an end to the vicious cycle of trauma pervading Tina's life... but they didn't. Tina could have been saved that day, but the system failed her. The system failed her before she ever even walked this earth. One man was arrested in connection with Tina's death, but today, no one has been charged with the murder of this young girl.

The death of Tina Fontaine, and the failures of the system that was supposed to protect her and children like her, sparked an outpouring of grief, anger, and calls to action across Canada. The public demanded that the Canadian government launch an inquiry into the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
