(00:02):
Janette and Kate cross paths at theSkyland High takeover of the County Fair,
where one is desperate to prove herselfand the other to lose herself. You're
with Cruel Summer Camp. Hi everyone, what's up? What is up?
(00:42):
Camela? Yes? I should havesome sad music queued up for this.
The the world's mightiest, tiniest violinright now in my fingers. Okay,
thank you everyone. Just imagine itin your heads, very very sad,
very sad satisfy in music you've everheard. It's plain you just can't hear
(01:07):
it because it's so tiny. Thisis a really bad week for me.
Oh, I'm sorry. Tomorrow it'sthe last fucking pool day of the year.
I don't I'm not ready to saygoodbye to summer. I feel that,
(01:30):
Oh my god, seriously, Like, I just why am I still
living in the Chicago area. Idon't think it's not here? What's up?
Said? It's nice and hot inLos Angeles right now. Well,
it's it's hot here too, butit's like it's I don't, I can't.
(01:53):
I don't want it to go.I'm so sad. I'm gonna have
like I swear to God, I'mgonna be just on Wednesday when I when
I wake up, I'm just gonnabe like just curled up in the fetal
position, like under a blanket, crying, not ready for it, not
(02:17):
ready for it. Oh my god. Yeah, I mean it's our it's
my first summer having a pool, and and we didn't even have to pay
for it, which is awesome. But yeah, like, oh my god,
it's the best thing that's ever happened. But you've got a fun week.
You're leaving for Boston tomorrow. Uhyeah, Philly, Philly, Oh
(02:38):
Philly. I thought you were goingto Boston, my dad, I am.
But after Oh okay, gotcha, gotcha. I've actually I've never been
to I've been ever been to Philly. I've been up. I was in
Boston once when I was really little. But yeah, it's uh, I'm
(03:00):
high jealous. I haven't left townany well. I'm like, I was
really stressed out today. It wasit was not a good one, lack
one on. But you know,I'm happy, so happy to be here.
Always enjoy getting to talk about cruelsummer. Yeah, yeah, definitely.
(03:20):
And and this is we are officiallywith this episode, We're officially halfway
through, I know, kind ofa bummer. I know then I'm actually
gonna have to start planning for allthese topics discussed with guests actually reach out
(03:42):
to Sad all Man, what abummer that sucks life? Yeah, yeah,
definitely. But yeah, it's youknow, we're gonna have a little
bit of a break this this weekand next week from the show other than
like from recording, other than youknow, our our aftershow. So that'll
(04:06):
be kind of I'll enjoy the I'llenjoy the vacation as much as I love
doing this. I'll enjoy the vacationfor Kelly. Yeah. But yeah,
So this episode was called as theCarnigods intended. I always wonder Jamie,
(04:27):
what's up the quote from Jamie asthe title? Oh yeah, that's right,
it was from Jamie. Yeah.I I always wonder how they decide
on on the on the episode titles, Like if it were me picking the
titles with my sense of humor,I mean I would have named this episode
(04:48):
shut in with a Bad Haircut.Yeah, honestly, I'd probably named the
episodes like I give myself nicknames onthis show. I just picked like whatever,
the funniest little raises that I canput and then that's the title.
Yeah, so that's really a mysteryto me is not even necessarily the titles,
(05:11):
but the log lines that they writefor Yellow Jackets for each episode.
They're like they're never like straightforward, you know, they're never like like the
one for the finale is like popquiz, let's see who will pass?
And I'm like, what are youtalking about? Like, yeah, if
(05:32):
I read the synopsis, I couldn'ttell you a thing. I can tell
you where everyone is, what they'redoing, or why. Yeah, yeah,
it's it's always kind of fun.Did dissect them? I kind of
like them. They're just I mean, they're so goofy, but they're they're
kind of fun. Yeah, They'revery playful, but like just giant question
(05:54):
marks to me. Yeah, yeah, definitely. Now, oh god,
I lost my train of thought here. So this this episode was written by
Tia Napolitano. She was the showrunnerfor season one, right oh yeah,
(06:15):
yeah, okay, yeah, andthe director was Dan Willis on this one.
There was a lot of creepy stuffgoing on in this episode. What
did what did you think of it? Yeah, it's really scary. We
get a lot of Martin jump scares, you know, it's those are really
mountain up. We see him really, I mean flirting with a sixteen year
(06:36):
old girl like I the first time, I don't think I clocked it quite
as clearly. Maybe I wasn't payinghis careful attention, But the rewatch of
this episode for me, I waslike, oh, yeah, why he
comes up to Kate. I'm like, he's flirting with her, Like no,
im sans or butts like that's flirting. M yeah, super creepy.
(07:00):
Yea, yeah he was. Martinwas inappropriate all around. I mean he
was like he was inappropriate with Jeanette, like just I mean, yeah,
she was. She was an assholetoward Gideon, but like Martin was kind
of a I think that was reallyweird for him to since when do an
(07:21):
assistant principles get that invested? Yeah, yeah exactly, Like what if he
was creeping around or something, youknow, yeah you want to use him?
Yeah, I don't know, butyeah, it's just that that was
weird. That was I thought thatwas like crossing some boundaries there. This
(07:43):
was just a bad episode all aroundfor the guys because like Greg and Jamie,
oh my god, I wanted topunch them both in this episode Jamie
major gas later, major me yourgas later. It like really enraged me.
(08:03):
I completely forgot that He tries toconvince Kate that she didn't see him
kissing Jeanette, like that is justabsolutely wild, like she saw with her
own two eyes, and he's like, well, you know, you can't
trust your memory. Yeah, heweaponized her trauma against her, like it
(08:26):
was you know, And and Ithink I might have said this before,
but it's it's a it's a controversialstatement, and I know someone's going to
misinterpret what I'm trying to say,but I am in no way excusing intimate
partner violence. It's horrible. Anykind of physical violence is unacceptable. And
(08:50):
when he punched Janette, I meanthat was that was horrifying. But I
actually think what he did to Katehere was potentially even worse. M M.
It's it was so fucking abusive, like yeah, just oh my god,
(09:15):
oh just awful, just fucking awful. It was so triggering for me
to watch. But I like thescene where they were talking about it,
and the way she says, youknow, when he tells her he didn't
kiss her, and the way shesays, but I saw you like the
way she said that just broke myheart, Like, oh my god,
(09:39):
Oh it's just awful, Like Iwant to cry thinking about it. It's
just, Oh, I fucking hateJamie so much. I fucking hate him.
He just enrages me. He's sucha piece of shit, truly.
And then like when you see himin the nineteen ninety five timeline, he's
just like getting trashed by himself underage. Yeah I'm fair. It's like,
(10:01):
oh, thank god. I wasjust like, thank god she dumped him.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'mglad. Well, yeah, let's
let's get into it, shall we. Yes. So in nineteen ninety three,
we open with two Well. It'sa it's a great little mashup of
(10:26):
everyone's morning routine over the three years. The first song playing for nineteen ninety
three is two Princes by the spinDoctors. Such a fun song, very
excited to hear it. And wesee Jeanette and Kate looking at themselves in
the mirror doing essentially like the sameroutine. And I know they have a
(10:50):
lot in common through toothbrushes or oppositecolors, but it's essentially like the same
routine. Jeanette, we find doubtis getting ready for her first date,
which is one of the items onthe list, with a guy named Gideon,
and she's freaking out. She's tryingto back out of this date,
(11:13):
but Vincent Mallory already went on adate and they have a little argument over
what second bases. That was sofunny. She was like when when Vince
made the comment that like Mallory wasbusy getting the second base with her date.
She was. And Janette's like, grow small stuff. So funny.
(11:41):
Also, she's wearing like a millionnecklaces. It's just like so funny.
I love it, you know.I was actually just having a conversation with
my husband yesterday about like the nineties, and like I was just remembering the
way I used to dress, andlike back then, I would not like
(12:05):
I couldn't imagine just wearing one necklacelike I had, Like I wore so
much fucking jewelry. I had likeso many rings, so many bracelets,
so many earrings, so many necklaces. Like it's yeah, yeah, I
there, there were. There wasa lot of layering back then. So
funny, yeah, great, greatlittle jewelry choices for Janette. At the
(12:31):
same time, we're seeing Kate walkingaround the fair with Jamie and Ben so
adorable. Yeah, she was cute. She has like a side ponytail.
Kate's just like such a little dollevery time she's dressed. Uff. Yeah,
(12:52):
So she sees joyant Scott and shegets really upset. She tells like
Jamie and Ben turn around and look, but of course they don't see anything
fishy happening. They just completely don'tknow what she's talking about. They're just
really focused on the fair and ridingthe gravitron. So then back over to
(13:20):
miss Jeanette Greg. This is sucha funny scene. Greg is sitting on
the couch with Gideon Jeanette state andhe's sitting there so awkwardly. Cindy's really
nice and just like she's been reallysweet to him. I feel like I
have seen this actor who's playing inplaying Gideon a few other places. Yeah,
(13:48):
you know, I am. Letme see if Austins Sager such your
He did look really he did lookreally kind of familiar. But let's see
what was he was in? ScaryStories to tell in the dark. Oh
(14:11):
okay, yep, I saw that. Yeah, but yeah, that's that's
all that. That's all that Ican really find that's been like that's like
really well known as far as Ican tell. But yeah, I liked
Gideon. Yeah, he's so sweet. I feel like he's like a pretty
(14:35):
good match for Janette. Honestly, they're equally nerdy, but they seem really
sweet together. Mallory like looks likeshe's gonna gag when Gideon is there.
At one point, she literally likemakes a gagging face, just like naturally,
she's not even being like her bitchyis self. Yeah. Yeah,
(15:03):
So Gideon and Janette get on whatI thought was the ferrest wheel, but
then it starts moving all kinds ofdirections, so I'm not sure it was
the fairest wheel. Gideon tells herhe thinks she's the coolest girl. That's
so cute. Yeah, well firsthe was like I think for I think
before that, he's like, soVincent Mallory, are your friends and she's
(15:28):
like, yeah, they're pretty dope. He's like yeah, She's like yep,
dope. She's like it's it's likeshe's trying to you know. It's
like this kid is a newbie,so she's like trying. She's like trying
too hard to seem cool. Sothat like because he doesn't know anything about
(15:48):
her. Yeah, yeah, welearned he's he's not from around there,
and I think he's like just visitingfor the summer essentially. Oh okay,
gotcha, because I don't think Martinasked him later if he's going to go
to the school. Okay, Ididn't remember that part, but yeah.
Gideon tells her she's the coolest girl, so sweet, and Janette is like,
(16:12):
well, actually, you know whois the coolest girl? Looked down,
it's Kate Wallace. And she waslike, and Jamie's the coolest guy.
And Jamie is doing the dunk tank, you know, hitting or throwing
the ball. I love that shereferred to Jamie as the big man on
(16:33):
campus, the big man on campus. And she's like, I'm getting in
with their group. Yeah you sureare, Janette. You sure are in
and out real fast. Within ayear, you are in and then you
are also completely socially destroyed. Soyeah, I'm trying so hard to telegraph
(16:56):
to this this kid that she's toocool for him. Yeah, okay,
do you I mean she really like, do you think off the bat,
she just like wasn't into him atall. I don't think so. I
I think like, I think shejust she saw at that point where she
(17:21):
was in her life, like shewas so she had this this fascination with
Kate, and I think that shewould have I think she was ready to
like pretty much shun anything that wasn'tcool enough for her, you know what
(17:41):
I mean. That's a good Yeah, So I because that's what I got.
Like, it just seemed to melike she was really trying hard to
seem like she was too cool forhim, Like she was. She was
nice to him. She was likekind of nice to him at first,
but also stand offish, and youknow she was like she's like, yeah,
(18:02):
I'm friends with all all the popularkids. Yeah it's yeah. I
just I don't think she wanted tobe there. Yeah. Yeah. She
was really reluctant to go on thedate. And you know, it's like
your friends are like gagging at yourdate. But he was really into it,
and he's like, no, hedropped her a little like social social
(18:32):
hierarchy of high school thing for aminute to just be like, oh,
our baby's growing up. Greg's likeyeah, yeah, so funny. It
is interesting. I feel like thatis something that you definitely do or like
people can do as teenagers and likemiddle school high school where it's like,
(18:56):
oh, well, like I knowI am a dork, but compared to
this stork, I'm higher on thescale. So I'm actually gonna be like,
no, I'm the cool one here, Yeah, the cool one in
this dynamic. I hadn't thought ofit like that. But that's a really
good point because I mean, aswe're gonna see coming up, like she
(19:18):
starts to get kind of bullied byRenee and Neil about Gideon. But I
thought that's what's set her off.But you bring up like a really good
point. I think from the getgo, she she was never going to
be attracted I mean not like nevergoing to be attracted to Gideon, but
I think I mean she ends upwith Jamie like he's just not her type.
(19:40):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. SoGideon and Jeanette end up going to
Martin Spooth. He's running it's myfavorite game, like Midway game. It's
a water gun me too. Ilove those. I love when you race
with the water gun. I'm likeactually good at that. I love games
(20:06):
like that. I never trust therides at like bears like this. I
don't trust rides that can be likeassembled and disassembled in a day. You
know. I'm like, I don'tknow about that. Let's see, I'm
the type of person who like, there's this ride that is at our Fourth
of July carnival every year, whichis right down the street from us,
(20:32):
and a few years back, somebodydied on it and not not in our
not at our festival, but ohsomewhere else. But I can't and I
forget what the I forget what theride is called. But it's like you
sit in like you've got a hart. There's a harness that goes over and
(20:52):
your legs are kind of dangling andit goes up in the air and like
spins around and like goes upside down, and oh my gosh when my cars
that years ago, thank god,I stop doing it. I like,
I'm the type of person who like, I will, I will I rode
(21:15):
that even after somebody died. That'sso funny. I did not like that
ride because the time I went onit in middle school, it like by
the sheer force of it, itlike forces your head to go this way
and then like forces your head tomove the other way. It's just like
(21:36):
a little too jostly. I Idon't like it, don't like it one
bit. I love it, loveit, love it, love it.
Yeah, it's oh my god,I am. I am the biggest York.
To my husband, like he won'tgo on he hates, he hates
rides like he's scared of heights, and and whenever we go, he like
(21:59):
he loved taking pictures of me whenI'm on the rides because I look like
the biggest dork and like the facesthat I make because I'm just in I'm
in my happy place and I'm justlike little Time. Yeah, sorry,
listener, didn't see my face there, but just imagine like a really happy
(22:22):
looking dog. Yeah, happy Kellywith a bridget Bardobo exactly. Yeah,
I'm sure we didn't see Gideon andJeanette get on any like thrill rides if
you like. Gideon either didn't wantto get on them. But I mean
imagine if they did. I feellike someone would have ended up puking on
(22:42):
the other one, you know,Yeah, yeah, I mean, you
know, Mallory did say she wantedto get on the Gravitatron before it got
too puky, so clearly a lotof people puke on it. Yeah,
people definitely puke on it. Iwould not go on a first state at
like, not like county fair, because I do like county fairs, but
(23:03):
I wouldn't get on that many likehigh speed things that people could potentially vomit
on, or vomit you could stepin, Like, I don't want to
have any vomit affiliation on like afirst date. You know, have you
ever thrown up on a ride? No, I never have. I've never
(23:26):
thrown up on a ride, butI just don't wouldn't want to risk it
on a first date. Oh yeah, No. I threw up one sun
a ride when I was a kid, and it wasn't the Tilt a World,
but it was something similar, Andyeah, it just really upset my
stomach and I ended up puking likeon the ride on the like and it
(23:49):
was just as it was as theride was stopping, I ended up like
I threw up over all over myfriend's shoes. Oh yeah, no,
like and she had sandals on,so it was her feet too. Like
it wasn't just her shoes. Ilike, I threw up all over her
feet. I think I threw upon somebody else's feet. And I'm like
(24:15):
this little kid and the ride operatorwas like yelling at me, so funny,
go fuck yourself, dude, Waityelling at you. That's not right.
I know. I was so pissed. I was like, fuck yourself.
Also, it's interesting that it's likethis is like the Skylin High takeover
(24:40):
of the carnival, Like why,I don't know, it's not weird.
That's a little bizarre. Well, see what I find weird about it is
that like that sounds like a fundraiserto me. Yeah, yeah, yeah
exactly. It's either like put onby the school where it's the county Fair.
It's not usually like a hybrid ofboth. I feel like, yeah,
(25:06):
but what's what's weird about that though, is that like later in the
episode, we hear Mallory talking abouthearing a rumor that Janette was doing the
dunk tank to help pay her legalbills, which is like, okay,
that I had assumed this was afundraiser. So that's kind of weird.
Yeah, it's also weird the Martinand like, I guess, what's so
(25:30):
like hypothetically teachers are running the booths. Yeah, yeah, I guess so,
Like it's just something a little funkyin my tongue growing up the local
Catholic school. Would they have likea huge front lawn essentially slash like parking
lot and they annually like you know, sell tickets and get people to come
(25:56):
to like a it's not as bigas the county, but it's like,
you know, a good amount ofrides like funnel Cake, the usual suspense.
Yeah, so yeah, interesting andlittle interesting, little uh setup of
events here. So Jeanette comes upto Martin's booth. He's running to play
(26:19):
this water gun game with Gideon. She brings up that he's from Widow Falls,
Like, I don't know why,Like, is that a flex for
her? Is she just trying toengage with him? Does she want to
instigate him? Being like how doyou know that? So that she lies
again like she was going for here. I don't know that she was really
(26:45):
going for anything. I think Ithink she just had kind of like a
like a flake moment. It wasjust trying to make conversation and that and
something came out that she just likethat she kind of regretted after she said
it. Yeah, so I thinkit was I don't I don't think she
(27:06):
was thinking. I think she wasjust like making trying to make awkward conversation
and yeah, and he was likeyeah, and he was immediately like a
little suspicious, like, yeah, how'd you know that? Yeah? Yeah,
for sure. He's like okay, like why do you know that?
(27:30):
And then of course she makes upa lie like so fast, She's just
so good at lying. So theyplay the water gun game. But as
Jeanette's plaguing, Renee and Tanil arelike coming up like laughing at them,
(27:51):
and Jeanette gets really embarrassed, andthey start kind of egging her on,
asking like, oh, is thatlike your nerdy boyfriend, like you two
geeks on a date, And shelies and says she doesn't even know him
(28:11):
and that he just sat down nextto her, so, you know,
and then she just walks away andleaves get In. Martin is stunned.
Gideon at this point hasn't noticed yet. Yeah. I feel like the first
time I watched this, I waslike they treat like that, But you
(28:36):
know, it's like it could justbe Martin in particular, like grooming slash
like a little too invested in whatyou know high schoolers are doing. But
I'm like, there's no way anassistant principle is this morally invested in how
people treat their dates at the carnival. Yeah, it's weird. It's weird,
and it's creepy and it's inappropriate.Yeah, I mean, you know,
(29:02):
probably no, Gideon could have beenlike creeping her out somehow, you
know, he could have been doingfor sure, what does what does Martin
know about the situation, Like basicallynothing. So Gideon is like hanging around
with Martin just like waiting for Jeanetteto come back. This is like between
(29:23):
commercial breaks, so like time isdefinitely passed, uh, And he's like
yeah, he's just waiting there. And Martin's like, hey, you know,
like I don't think Jeanette's coming back, and Gideon's like, oh no,
she's nice, like she'll come backeventually. Oh poor kid man.
(29:47):
It's sad like he did not deservethat from Janette. No, not at
all. But yeah, so eventuallyhe leaves, he just kind of gives
up. Martin offers him a ridehome. Then Gotty didn't take it,
like creepy, yeah, creepy really, but you know, Gideon's like,
(30:10):
oh, it's okay, I'll justride my bike. Yeah, and Martin
see's kay walking by herself, likeI guess Jamie and Ben just kind of
like are riding the Gravitron and likeit's just interesting to me because like there
are several times where like Jamie iswith Kate and then she loses him and
(30:33):
he's like not like, hey,has anyone seen my girlfriend? He's just
like doing whatever. Yeah, SoKate decides to play the water gun game
alone. You know, he givesher a pink Bunny prize. She says
she's too old for it, buttakes it anyway. And you know,
(30:57):
Kate is still a Paul magetic thattheir first real meeting was when she was
absolutely hammered on the street directly infront of his house. But he says,
this is where things get very itchyand creepy. He noticed her at
(31:18):
the garden Club party and he kindof teases it out, and eventually he
says he thought that she was anadult. And it's funny because she goes,
you thought I was a mom,and he's like, no, I
just thought like you were a grownup. Yeah, because of how you
(31:38):
act. And I mean this isone hundred percent grooming, one hundred percent
flirting. Like the tone of hisvoice is just very flirtatious. Alone,
Yeah, he's standing a little tooclose to her, like it it's just
(32:01):
yeah, it's creepy. Yeah,it's not good. It's very creepy.
Kate is into it, poor thing, like she really was just like had
too many moments where she was leftalone and he was just there, you
know. Yeah yeah, And Imean like, you know, he's he's
(32:24):
a good looking guy. Like ifI think most I would think, like
a lot, if not most highschool girls, if like a hot teacher
or somebody came on to them. The sad thing is I think, like,
(32:51):
well, I mean at least backthen, and I mean not.
I think things have changed now,but because kids have been like have grown
up with a little more awareness. But at least back then, I think
a lot, if not most teenagegirls, if a cute teacher was flirting
with them, they would be allthey'd be all for it, you know,
(33:13):
yeah, for sure, Like wehad a Remember we had a teacher
at my school. He was theart teacher and his name was mister mister
Stegbauer and everyone called him mister Stugbauer. That's so funny. I remember many
of my friends having crushes on teachersin middle school, in high school,
(33:35):
I remember like guys coming on tofemale teacher. Okay, there was there
was a talent show when I wasin middle school, and there was this
guy who like classic teen drama style, like he looks so much older than
he was, which was eighth grade, but like he looked like at least
(34:00):
to sixteen seventeen year old boy.He at the school talent show. He
thinks he's saying, she thinks mytractor's sexy, and he like walked around
like he was walking around doing theroutine, and he like came up to
the teacher and was like and thenlike took off his hat and put it
(34:22):
on her head. Oh my god. Yeah, okay, that's weird.
There's there's so much now that Ilook back on stuff, Like I was
just talking about it with some ofmy friends. I did know in high
school. There's so much stuff thateven if I like say it out loud
(34:42):
and repeat it, I'm like,oh yeah, no, that wasn't right.
That was very creepy. That wasnot okay, Oh god, what
the hell? Man? Yeah, that's weird, like that weird. Yeah.
The continuation of the creepy part inthis scene is that Martin lock clocks
(35:07):
that she left her scruncheet behind. He has his hand on the scrun sheet,
calls back to Kate, fist thescrunch sheet, and then says like,
have a good night, because it'slike one thing if he just took
the scrun sheet, but it's likehe summoned her back and then was like,
(35:28):
but I'm keeping this. Yeah,oh god, Like he went home.
Like if if he had actually gottento take it home, you know,
he would have been like sniffing it. Yeah, for sure, he
went one hundred percent like wanted tosniff that thing. Yeah, gross,
(35:49):
so gross, God, this guy, this guy, so mark, excuse
me. Jeanette is walking around thecarnival with Mallory and Vince. She's telling
them she left Gideon and they're aboutto pass Martin and Janette wants to avoid
(36:12):
him. I kind of I thinkshe kind of knows that he's going to
say something about it to her anddoes not want to hear it from him.
So Martin pulls Janette away from herfriends to talk to him about this,
and Vincent Mallory immediately clocked that thisis like so strange. Yeah,
(36:37):
they're spot on, you know,it really is weird, and you know,
Martin is like, how would youfeel if someone did that to you?
And he has the scrunch he wrappedaround his knuckles and Janette is like,
what are you doing with that scrunchy? I think Jeanette recognize or no,
(37:00):
Martin tells her it's Kate's first,she doesn't recognize it's Kate. Well,
what was funny? She's like, what is that? Is that yours?
So good? Yeah, it's Martinscrunchy? Yeah for all his hair
he needs to put back in aponytail. Yeah, of course, just
(37:21):
a little something from Widow Falls.Yeah, yeah, exactly. So Jeanette
offers to take the scrunch and giveit to Kate. When she sees her,
he was so like and he washe was so like, like he
was pissed off about it. Yeah, he literally hated that. He hated
(37:46):
that. And then it's like it'sa little bit funny because Jeanette's like the
other creep who would also probably loveto smell that scruncheet. Oh yeah,
yeah, I'm sure. But yeah, he was like, well, I'll
see her before you I can takeit to her. He's like, of
course you will. Yeah, Ohgod, you're so I think weird,
(38:10):
just just go away, Martin socreepy. So Jeanette puts it on her
wrist and Mallory's like, what areyou doing with Kate Wallace? Is U
scrunchy? Yeah? She's like,oh, well, like I'm going to
give it back to her. They'relike, you're not gonna see Kate Wallace.
(38:30):
Yeah, okay. Let me askyou, I mean, what did
you think about this? Did youthink that Mallory was like legitimately concerned or
did you think that she was likejust kind of trying to embarrass Jeanette or
a little bit of both. Ohyou mean when she asked about the scrunchy
(38:51):
Yeah, Oh, I think shethinks it's weird. It doesn't it doesn't
make sense, like yeah, butimagine you think, like, do you
think that she was calling her onit because she was genuinely concerned for like
the way she was behaving, orbecause she was just like she just wanted
(39:12):
to like make her feel bad aboutit. That's a good question. I
think I think she kind of recognizesit's like an unhealthy fascination. Yeah,
and also that like it's on Jeanette'srisk, do you know what I mean?
It's not like she even like putit away. It's like, oh,
(39:35):
well, why are you taking thisthing that someone else's Yeah, you're
wearing it. You wear it onyour wrist because you're going to put it
in your hair, right exactly.I was always wearing scrunches on my wrist,
and then they'd never make it myhair. They just become bracelets at
that point. Yeah, really weird, weird little little interaction there. And
(40:02):
we see Kate she comes home withthe pink funny she won, and she's
up, you know, fluffing itup and looking at it. I think
she saves like her carnival ticket.Yeah, it's her mirror too, And
uh, this is cut with Jeanettewho's looking at the mirror with Kate's scrunchy
(40:27):
in her hands and she's rehearsing givingit back to her. She's like,
oh sure, I would love tohang out. Oh so painfully dorky,
Janette so dorky. It's Kiara likereally does such a great job of like
playing two very different people. Yeah, yeah, nint ninety five. Jeanette
(40:54):
is also different, but I feellike she's more jaded and I can get
how I the transition from nineteen ninetyfour to nineteen ninety five makes a lot
of sense, But nineteen ninety threeto nineteen ninety four, those are two
totally different people. Yeah, yeah, definitely, Like you know she was,
(41:19):
I mean, just just the wayshe said, like rose mouth stuff.
Yeah, she's so funny. Ohmy gosh, she's so I nineteen
ninety three, Janetta is such alittle cutie pie. Yeah she is.
She's normal, a little trouble manner, but yeah, like and you know,
Kate, Kate's clearly very into Martin. Yeah, so we see she's
(41:45):
also rehearsing saying something in the mirror, but her it's a little more insidious.
She says, well, mister Harris, you look awfully young to be
in an assistant principle. Yeah, that's the end of the nineteen ninety three
(42:07):
timeline. And you know what's sowhat's so creepy is that like she was
very obviously flirting with him, andlike it was obvious, like he would
have picked up on that, mand like if he were a decent human
(42:28):
being, he would immediately start beingmore standoffish toward her. Yeah, he'd
shut it down. Yeah, yeah, exactly, such a weirdo So in
nineteen ninety four, Jamie and Kateget to the fair and he's apologizing for
(42:50):
picking her up late. She's beenlike, he was complaining that his mom
was was making him do extra choresaround the house, and she's like,
well, you know, he kindof deserved it. Like her, She's
like, well, that's what youget from punching your ex girlfriends, which
is like one of my favorite lines. It's like boom got him, got
(43:12):
his ass, Yeah, exactly,And you know, Jamie just wants to
move past that. And then Katesays, do you know that the opposite
of love is indifference, not hate? What do you think she was getting
(43:34):
at with us? That's a greatquestion. I first thought she was implying
that he feels indifference towards her,But now I'm kind of like, maybe
she was saying she feels indifference towardshim completely. She she doesn't hate him
(43:57):
for cheating on her, but shealso doesn't love him anymore, so she
feels indifferent. So I think maybeit was on her own feelings. What
do you think? It's funny becauseI had the exact opposite train of thought.
I at first thought that she wastalking about herself. But then when
(44:19):
I was watching it back yesterday, then I started thinking that she was talking
about him, because right after thathe was like, she asks him if
he really wants to be with heror if he just feels bad form And
but it's weird because between the twoof them, I mean, Kate seems
(44:43):
a lot less invested than he thanJamie. I know, yeah, it's
that's see, that's what made methink it's her feelings. But yeah,
the point, I mean, Ialso do thinking kid's perspective, like everyone
moved on with their live vibes withouther, you know, so I feel
like she does feel kind of likeunloved and unappreciated at this point. Yeah,
(45:09):
you know, I think she Ithink maybe she was just trying to
get to his true motivations because Ithink I think maybe she was just sick
of having people around her that shecouldn't trust, and like wanted to know
(45:30):
if he was gonna let her down, if he was going to keep letting
her down, or if he reallydid love her. Yeah, so I
think that's you know, I thinkthat's a good possibility too. And he
tells her that, you know,he like he said he doesn't associate with
(45:59):
psychos like Jeanette, and she toldhim that he followed her or she followed
him that one night and saw himkissing her, and she was working up
the courage to ask him about it, and he's like, is that the
therapy talking? Like when like lastepisode he was really trying to conjol her
(46:24):
about therapy as he was dropping heroff. You know, let me tell
you, I someone saying that.People saying that to me has been an
automatic relationship rule breaker, like relationshipunder for me, Like I I mean
(46:50):
it's it's gaslighting, yeah, andit's it's control and it's just oh god,
oh my god. Jamie just triggeredtriggered the hellotomy in this episode.
But you know, she's like shetells him that she's trying to stay focused
(47:14):
on reality, and he points outthat she shouldn't focus on made up stories
like him kissing Jeanette, and hereally like doubles down on it. He
doesn't just do it once, Helike continually is like, no, that
didn't happen. Yeah, Like okay, Shaggy whatever, it wasn't me,
(47:36):
what the what the fuck? Butso Jeanette, Janette and Derek get to
the fair and she's looking around forJamie, which Derek isn't so happy about,
not at all. Rightfully, bythe way, I just found out
somebody somebody left us a comment.I think it might have been Carl about
(47:59):
the actor that places Derek played youngCrease and Cobra Kai, which when he
told me that, my it blewmy mind because I was like, holy
I've never seen Cobra Kai. ButI was like, holy crap, because
now when I look at him,all I can see is Crease from the
original Karate Kid movie because he lookslike a younger version of him. He
(48:25):
totally does. And yeah, sothat's just kind of blew my mind.
But yeah, so she she said, Jeanette tells him that, like she
she's trying to find she's trying tofind him, I think because she expects
(48:51):
him to be there with Kate.Yeah, she's really looking for both of
them. Yeah, but she mostlywants to find Kate. It's yeah,
she's still out a phase where shethinks she can just like turn all of
this around, and it's like abig misunderstanding. And I mean that ship
(49:14):
has long sailed. Yeah. Yeah, helpful piece of advice people, if
you want to stay out of troublein your life. If someone doesn't want
to have anything to do with you, even if it's a complete misunderstanding and
you're completely innocent and they're the scummiestperson alive, leave it alone. Leave
(49:42):
it alone. Don't try to reasonwith them. It makes things worse,
exactly speaking from personal experience. Butbut anyway, you know, he's trying
to tell her to to stop stockingKate, but she's like like she just
(50:02):
thinks, yeah, she thinks everything'sgonna be fine. I mean, she's
she's really kind of deluding herself here. Yeah, She's like, Oh,
I'm gonna find Renee and Sanil andlike we can all be friends again.
No girl, And he like heasks what kind of cat fight he's he's
(50:24):
in for witnessing, and she's like, I don't want to hurt Kate and
he kind of reacts like like yousure about that? Yeah? Wait?
So like which kind of like heshook me a little bit because I mean,
he seems to have had a lotof faith in her, but he's
(50:45):
suddenly thinking that his sister is gonnabeat up Kate. Like like, I
don't know what that was about, but but yeah, she's like, she's
just she's being overly idealist and idealisticand optimistic. And yeah, this next
(51:07):
scene, like, this next scenetotally cracked me up because, like Joy
and Rod. We see Joy andRod at the fair and they're being like
hounded by reporters, and this reporterapproaches her and she's like and asked her
if she has a few minutes totalk about Kate, and she's like,
(51:29):
do I look like I have afew minutes and starts trying to walk off,
and she's like, and the reportersays something like, you know,
you look you look really put togetheror something like that for somebody who's been
through such an ordeal, and likeshe clearly had. She clearly knows who
she's talking to you. Because Joyimmediately is like, oh, okay,
(51:52):
well in that case, she complimentedme, so I'll talk to her.
Funny, I know, but yeah, And then we see Kate and Jamie
(52:12):
together and like Camerman are like tryingto surround her, and Jamie is like
getting them all to leave, andthen this is just like, oh my
god, I hate the scene somuch. He tells her that he met
up. He admits that he metup with Jeanette in the park m h.
(52:37):
But he didn't kiss her. Andyou know, like I said earlier,
the way that she the way thatshe looks at him and says,
but I saw you, it justoh my god, it just breaks it
just broke my heart. It justdestroyed me, Like just oh my god.
(52:58):
The gas lighting age just so awful. Yeah, and and and then
you know, he weaponizes her traumaagainst her, and he's like, you
know, it's it's the trauma likemaking you misremember things. And she's like,
you know, kissing Jeanette is badenough, but making you, like
(53:22):
making me doubt myself is so muchworse. And she dumps him. Good
ridence, good riddence. Yeah, that that should that should have been a
deal breaker, and I'm glad thatshe saw it as such. But uh
(53:43):
so then we we get back homewith with the Turners and Cindy's like just
drinking wine and watching reality TV andshe's, uh and Greg's like, you
were picking up a movie and she'slike, yeah, I don't like it
there anymore. Someone's spin on mycar in the parking lot and she's like
(54:10):
they also said a bunch of meanthings about Jeanette, which I won't repeat
because you know how much I hatefirst words, but what they spit on
the car while she was still init too? Yes, yeah, Have
you ever had anything like that happenedto you? No? Definitely not people
(54:32):
spinning on my car when I'm notin it. One time. One time,
my parents, like our our cargot taken in to the dealership for
repairs, so they lent us likea brand new car, and we drove
(54:54):
it somewhere and this lady like couldn'ttell that we were in the car,
and she was like taking photos ofthe car. Oh, how weird.
You know, it was like abrand new car. She was like wow,
but you know, so she couldn'tsee we were in it. But
other than that, no one's everspit in the not in the car.
(55:19):
Oh god, thank god. Noone's ever like done anything or tried to
like key my car when I'm init or anything like that. I had
a crazy experience. So if anybodywatching that start listening to this, it's
familiar with with Chicago and familiar withthe streets of Chicago. I was.
(55:43):
I used to live pretty close toChicago Avenue, and I was driving down
Chicago Avenue to on my way toa nail san to get my nails done,
and Chicago Avenue is very like it'snot very wide, and there's bike
lanes on both sides, and thenthere's parking, and it's like there's just
(56:07):
not a lot of room, likeyou can't pass somebody up if they're trying
to park or whatever. And I, like, I am, I am
ridiculous about like I'm hyper vigilant aboutusing my turn signals, like I do
it. I mean, it's somuch so that I just I automatically do
(56:30):
it out of habit. When I'mlike turning into the garage from the alley,
and so I put on my turnsignal with like plenty enough time because
I found a spot that I wasgoing to parallel parking. And this woman
like clearly just got like because shecouldn't pass me up because there's not enough
(56:52):
room. She got so infuriated thatshe got slowed down because I was parking
that she started like she started screamingat me, and I think I laughed
at her or something, which youknow, of course that made things worse.
(57:16):
She got out of her car andshe had like this huge monster energy
drink dumped the whole thing on mein my car, sat like through your
window. I was out of thecar by this point, Oh okay,
(57:36):
getting out of the car, andshe was screaming at me, so clearly
she wasn't in that much of ahurry. If she'd, like, you
know, she could have gone already. But she stopped scream at me and
then got out of her car whenI laughed at her, and like dumped
a monster energy drink all over mein the car, and that that car
smelled like monster because like some ofit got into the like some of it
(58:00):
got into the interior and we cleanedit, but like it took forever for
the smell to come out. Yebad. I don't mind the smell,
but it's just like what a nightmare. I actually did think of someone throwing
something at my car. I wasdriving at night and I was on let's
(58:23):
see Pico, I don't know.I was by McDonald's in Los Angeles,
and there was just like a womanon drugs basically like in the road,
not like on a jay, youknow, not at a crosswalk, not
(58:44):
like on a sidewalk. She waslike in the middle of the road,
and it was at night, andI was just like I slowed down because
I saw this lady and she wasclearly like just yelling at cars. I
get closer, she's not wearing ashirt, she's topless. Oh wow,
and she just throws her She waslike screaming at my car. I didn't
(59:07):
do anything, you know, Iwas just there and she threw her drink
across my car and was like yellingat my car. I was so I
was so like scared and creeped out, and that was very unsettling. But
yeah, that's that's the time someonedefinitely threw something in my car. Yikes.
(59:30):
Crazy stuff. Man had a greatliving in the city. I love
it. Fortunately stuff doesn't like that. Stuff like that doesn't happen in the
suburbs anymore. So, like Imean in my area anyway, that was
really a much missed the city.I like, I don't see that many
(59:52):
like people on drugs in the middleof the road and just like running the
mill anywhere. Los Angeles. Youknow, it's like that's it's not really
something that I see a lot orexperience a lot luckily, So yeah,
yeah, it's I that's that's apretty regular currence in Chicago, I'd say,
(01:00:19):
so as much as I miss livingin the city. I don't miss
stuff like that, yeah for sure. But yeah, so Greg's like,
when do we start drinking? Befour five? Okay, mister judge Judgerson
like, yeah, it's I wasgonna say it's a holiday. It's actually
(01:00:42):
not a holiday. It's Carnival Day. But whatever, that's close enough.
Come on, it's obviously the weekend. Don't worry about that. Who cares?
Like we would drink at work sometimesat my last job, I mean,
I remember I remember my boss handingme a yager bomb at like ten
(01:01:04):
o'clock in the morning, Like whatwhat do you look? So she's having
a drink sometimes. You know whatI had. I had a froze yesterday
in the pool at like eleven o'clockam. That's accelerating labor day, I
(01:01:28):
wanted, Yeah exactly, Oh mygod. And She's like I think she
just spits out this random fact, which which I appreciated because I felt like,
okay, she's she's like she's onmy level here, because this is
(01:01:49):
this is like totally me. Youknow, I'll just be like in the
middle of something else and I'll justlike spit out some random fact. So
I think Cindy has Adhd. Yeah, I was so funny, and it's
like I chalked it up also, maybe to her being drunk and slash her
interest in being a flight attendant.Maybe did she mention willing to be a
(01:02:10):
flight attendant? Not yet, butI think she does later. Oh okay,
interesting, I'm completely hallucinating that, but I'm pretty sure she did.
Okay at some point in this show, gotcha not a bad gig? Well,
I think now. I think thingshave changed now, but it used
(01:02:32):
to not be a bad gig.But yeah, like he's totally judging her
for it. But she asks like, like, since we're asking questions,
what happens when someone dies on acommercial air flight? And she said,
they moved the body to first class? Have you ever heard this? No,
(01:02:57):
that can't be true. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Like,
I feel like if someone dies, they probably immediately land. I was
gonna say, land the ship.Yeah, land the ship. I would
think they I would think they probably, Yeah, they would probably land right
(01:03:21):
away. But also on a lotof planes, there is like there's this
upper area that a lot of peopledon't know about, and basically flight attendants
will go up there and there's likethere's like cots or something, or beds
(01:03:44):
or something. Like flight attendants willgo up there when they're on a break
or whatever and like take a nappOkay. You know, they worked like
such crazy hours and stuff, soyou would think that they would put them
up there. You know, I'mgonna say, I feel like they put
they put the body in a partof the plane that you know, we
(01:04:05):
just don't access as passengers. Yeah, yeah, definitely. I can't see
them putting the body in first class. That can't be right, But I
like the rumors she's starting. Yeahdefinitely, But I mean I could see
(01:04:26):
if they had to put the bodyanywhere in the seating area. You know,
I totally understand why it was firstclass. Why it would be first
class because there's there's more room,Like you can, you know, you
might be able to if there's ifthere's empty seats, you might be able
to like spread some people out there'sless people in there, you know,
(01:04:48):
like I can't, but yeah,I don't. I don't think they put
them in the seats. But Iappreciate that information like lot for sure,
though. Yeah, yeah, exactly. So you know, he's just like
all right, fine, well,I guess I'm on on movie pickup duty.
(01:05:12):
And he shows up at the videostore and you know, he's asking
Vince about the new Meg Ryan movie, which I'm wondering what that is.
So that's nineteen ninety four. Isthat you got mail? No? See
(01:05:34):
nineteen ninety four When a Man Lovesa Woman i Q i Q also came
out in ninety four. Oh Idon't remember either of those movies. Yeah,
I don't think probably When a ManLoves a Woman, But I don't
(01:05:55):
know either of those. Yeah, yeah, me either. But uh yeah,
So Angela then walks in. It'sit's the uh sorry, I have
a little tity. So Angela walksin and this is like the first time
(01:06:17):
that that Greg is meeting her.Yeah, so that's kind of cool that
we found out how they met.And she was like, she walks in
and she was so sweet, shewas all like, she was all she
was so worried about it. She'slike, does anyone drive a white sedan?
I hit I hit your car byaccident, and and uh he mentions,
(01:06:42):
and he's like he Greg like brusheshis off and and uh she wants
to write him a check. Andthen she had mentioned that she was new
in town, and he like givesher his real estate card and he's like,
yeah, it's like, well,I'm I'm the best realist. I'm
the best real tern in Skyland.I get some business from people that haven't
(01:07:10):
heard about your disgrace name yet,you know. But exactly, I don't
love that he met the woman whobecomes his girlfriend while he was still with
his wife. I do not likethat, but we don't necessarily know that
he started like yeah, but Idon't know. I feel like they have
(01:07:32):
like a spark that I was like, hey, buddy, you're man.
She was she was definitely into himright away. Yeah, I mean the
way she was looking at him,she was, Yeah, she was.
She was. She was definitely feelinghim hardcore. But so then we see
(01:07:55):
Kate with Renee ant neil or likealex I did to see her, and
she's just kind of trying to getaway from them. She's like she just
needs space. Yeah, and thenJeanette sees sees her and calls out and
(01:08:15):
Kate just like Kate's trying to getaway, Mallory steps in and you know,
tells her like they can try tolose Jeanette in the Monkey Maze,
which like, where did the Malloriecome from? Yeah, I don't know,
don't. She wasn't with Kate here. She just like showed up to
help, which you know, Katedefinitely appreciated. But it is funny because
(01:08:38):
she really comes out of like nowhere. We don't see her in the frame
at all. She just rushes it, you know. Yeah, Yeah,
it's really weird. And so theygo into they go into the monkey Maze
and Jeanette runs after her and Derek'strying to stop her, and Rene Antonil
(01:09:03):
like run into them, and thenKate gets separated from Mallory. And it's
really weird because like Kate and Janetteseemed to see each other in there,
but like it's only through the reflectionslike they can't, which is like,
(01:09:29):
this is just not the right Thisis not the place you want to be
if if you've got like fresh freshlylike freshly acquired PTSD. Oh agreed.
Also, this scene must have beenso hard to film, like with all
these mirrors. Imagine trying to likefollow these actors and like maneuver it,
(01:09:53):
but not have like your camera andcamera crew and like any of these shots.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'mwondering if there was like just if
there was some CG I used herethey might have for the mirrors. Yeah
yeah, but I mean they dida good job. I can't tell.
Yeah, yeah for sure, butuh. And then Kate at one point
(01:10:16):
SE's Martin, which yeah is andJen it comes out of the monkey bays
and Derek's like, you know,he's trying to tell her to drop us.
It's like, look, I'm youknow, she's she's telling him like
he's not being a good brother.And he's like, look, I'm just
(01:10:39):
being honest with you. The Wallacesalways win, yeah, whether they deserve
to or not, just how itis. And he just as her witness.
He wants her to leave, andthey have a funny moment here,
like she goes to hug him andhe's like, whoa, no PDA ever
(01:11:01):
since that movie? Sure thought youwere my girlfriend. It's so funny,
I know, And you know,he like he tells her, you know,
she's got to stop chasing chasing Kateand Jamie and he's like he brings
up, you know, the geekyJeanette that no one used to notice,
(01:11:27):
and that he's like like trying heragain. I agree, just ye eky
again, and then he walks off, and then she says to herself,
what's up? Oh, I waslike all she has to do was like
it's low effort, right, It'slike, don't straighten your hair, stop
using your contact glasses, make yourvoice a little. I don't know why
(01:11:51):
she was nasally then and now she'snot. Maybe stop taking your allergy pill
or like whatever it is that's makingyou can that prevented you from being congested
in nineteen ninety four, and justlike do that. And then he walks
away and she kind of says herself, I can't So what did you,
(01:12:16):
like, what did you think shemeant by that? I don't know.
I don't know, because here's thething. It's like I feel like,
no matter how far you try torun away from like a past version of
yourself, like somewhere you are stillthat person. So like I don't understand
(01:12:46):
why, well, I mean Ido for the state's sake of the story
and everything, but like on acharacter level, like I don't understand why
Jeanette can't go back to being thenerdy girl. I feel like she's seen
too much, she's learned too much, she's too into doing a legal shit
and Lyne, that's probably it,but I mean I think the superficial end
(01:13:12):
of it is very achievable and thatwould help her if she was nerdy again.
Yeah, would definitely see when shesaid this, this just this actually
kind of reminded me of Like thisreminded me of Kate because it's like it's
like they both have reasons that theycan't go back to who they used to
(01:13:35):
be because so much has changed.Yeah, Like Kate was very sheltered,
and you know, she said that, like she said in the last episode
of the one before she used tothink that the world was safe. Yeah,
and like she can't ever be theperson she used to be because so
(01:13:57):
much about hers has fundamentally changed becauseof what she's gone through. And like
I kind of took Jeanette saying thatis is basically like kind of the same
thing, you know, but thisis the only thing is like at this
point in nineteen ninety four, likeshe hasn't received If she was saying this
in nineteen ninety five, I wouldget it, But at nineteen ninety four,
(01:14:20):
at this point, she still islike holding out hope that like life
is going to go back to normal, like people haven't She's not like hated
by the country, you know, like the newscast hasn't come out, so
like what about this experience other thanI mean, Jamie punching her, But
(01:14:41):
even then, like just if myboyfriend punched me, I wouldn't be like
and now I can never be thesame person again, you know what I
mean? Like, I don't knowwhat about her experience At this point in
the timeline, She's like, Ican't go back. I mean, I
don't want to say to my becauseI don't want to get spoilery. Yeah,
(01:15:03):
but it's I just I feel likeshe just realize that she's she is
a different person, like the waythat she's acted out, and I don't,
like, you know, she's lostthat innocence that she used to have,
(01:15:24):
you know what I mean, Andlike and yeah, I don't want
to say anything else because I'll startspoiling things. But that's kind of how
I took it. I don't know, but yeah, So that's the end
of the ninety four timeline. Sue. We got nineteen ninety five. In
(01:15:46):
the Waking Up montage, the songweek by Skunk and Nancy is playing I
totally forgot that they existed, SoI was like, holy shit, when
I know this song, I notknow the band. Yeah, I remember
the band, but they're they're kindof like they're kind of like one of
those bands that I just completely forgotabout. I never really go ahead,
(01:16:15):
No, I was just I wasnever really into them, but like I
knew who they were. They hada lot of friends who liked them.
I love them whenever they do likea waking up montage like this and the
birthday Jeanette's birthday across the timelines, because whenever you get to nineteen ninety five,
you know it's nineteen ninety five becausesomeone is like being like, Jeanette,
(01:16:38):
get your fucking ass soup. Youbit like there's always someone in the
family who's like so mad at herat like the very start of the day.
Yeah, it's just like one ofthose things that I find so funny.
Derek is yelling at Janette that sheused up all the hot water in
(01:16:58):
the shower, and then we getKate who's looking at herself in the mirror
and she sees Martin calling her aliar behind her. Yeah, I'm scared
one of a few we're going toget in this timeline, you know,
I forgot just backing up a littlebit, I did. I did forget
(01:17:18):
to mention the getting Ready seen innineteen ninety four. Yeah, that is
to the song. I really likethe song I Walk Alone by Mecca Normal,
which I feel like is a perfectsong for that timeline. Yeah,
yeah, definitely. Yeah. AndJeanette's like Jenette's excited, Like she looks
(01:17:42):
at the like the she's getting readyfor school, and her hair's all straight,
and she like she doesn't ever glasseson, and her braces are off,
and she like looks at the littlepackage of rubber bands and she's just
like tosses him in the trash.Like the braces she had that are on
screen are definitely not the rubber bandbecause I had the rubber band braces,
and you would have seemed right here, gotcha. But just a little you
(01:18:10):
know things, I noticed my buddyjust did the biggest flop behind me.
Look a, you's quite key sheplays with so I don't know if my
audio picked this up, but shewas like clanging them around. It's very
cute, but uh, anyway, yeah, I love it. I love
(01:18:31):
those waking up montages. She looksso satisfied with herself. In nineteen ninety
four, it's like she's up andshe's just like looking at herself and even
though like shit's starting to hit thefan. In nineteen ninety four, for
her, she's like, I lookhot, Like that's one percent what she's
thinking. Yeah, yeah, forsure. Yeah. And and Kate just
(01:18:58):
like, you know, she's she'sbrushing her teeth and like the she's you
know, in the downstairs shower,in the downstairs bathroom, and like she
just she just looks terrible. Imean, she's she's worried, like she
just you know, she looks likeshe hasn't She looks like she she just
(01:19:19):
hasn't. Like her skin is verypasty, like she hasn't seen sunlight,
and god knows how long. Youknow, she she's not looking so good.
Yeah, she she doesn't seem veryhappy either, you know, she's
not in the day with a smileon her face. In nineteen ninety five,
(01:19:41):
we go back to Kate and she'slistening to her therapy tapes again.
On the tape, she admits shelied about talking to Martin before the kidnapping
to the cops, and Sylvia saysthat, you know, as a minor,
like she wouldn't be held accountable forany of that. But you know,
(01:20:04):
Kate did not feel like she wantedto tell the police that. I
get it, Like I understand whereshe's coming from, especially like when you
hear that, like people that somepeople that liked the show are like,
oh, well it was Kate's fault. It's like, oh well, no
(01:20:24):
it wasn't. No, no,no, you aren't getting it. You
don't get the show. You don'tunderstanding. So she's talking about on the
tapes. The line makes me sosad. She says she has a memory
of talking to him at the CountyFair because it was exceedingly normal. And
(01:20:47):
I'm like, nothing about that interactionwas exceedingly normal. No, it wasn't.
It was very not normal. Itwas very not okay. And that
she can identify that, you know, it's like she's still not in a
good place over like this relationship withMartin. And while she's listening to these
(01:21:11):
tapes, she's drawing the name Annabelleover and over. Who you know at
this point, we don't We don'tknow who Annabelle is, and neither does
Kate. Like I wonder, youknow, if I mean, I I
assume she was thinking if she justkept drawing the name over and over again,
like it would come to her maybe, Yeah, I think so.
(01:21:35):
Yeah, Yeah, that's that's solike God, that's so disturbing that you
know she's she clearly the way shementioned Annabelle in that first appointment, in
that first appointment, where like thatfirst mention of her it was clearly significant
(01:21:57):
and she can't remember, and that'sjust that's terrifying. Yeah, I hate
that. Yeah, it draws sucha blank like that is so scary.
They now, so Jeanette is givingmajor attitude to her lawyer. They're talking
(01:22:18):
about all the folks they deposed.Vince was great, but they need like
two more friends, at least twomore people that can attest to Jeanette's character.
They bring up Mallory and you know, of course Jeanette says Mallory is
a non starter. Oh wow,of course, yeah, to say the
(01:22:42):
least. Yeah, definitely Malory's anon starter. We saw that in the
newscast. She was like, well, I would say Jeanette was my best
friend, but I think she's aliar and she's a backstabber and just like
(01:23:02):
you know, all of that inthe year has more or less in front
of a judge. Holy moly,God knows what she'd say. Yeah,
seriously, like, oh my god, some of those news interviews were just
like, oh god, they wereawful, awful, Yeah, awful awful.
So back with Kate, she's messaging, I'm not gonna call her Bernickey,
(01:23:27):
as I established, I'm gonna becalling her Bernice. She messages Bernice,
and little little clueless drop right here, she's bugging out, Yeah,
over who sent the liar letter? You know, they think, of course,
like suspect number one is that it'sJanette, but Kate is really worried
(01:23:51):
about it. So as she's Imean, you and I would thank you
for her Yeah for sure. Imean it seems like that would be the
most obvious pick, but yeah, who knows. So Mallory comes over and
(01:24:13):
she comes to say that Jeanette, she heard, is sending in the dunk
tank to pay for her lawyer fees, which you know, it's it's so
funny this interaction that brings Kate alot of joy. I mean, that's
a lot funnier versus like Renee andto Neil trying to connect to Kate and
(01:24:34):
bringing up Janette, saying like, well Janette said she I heard Janette told
this girl she saw you chained toa wall, and just like stuff like
that. That obviously was very upsettingto Kate versus this. And you know,
the relationship with Mallory just seems verylike easy and natural. But I
(01:24:57):
mean, Allary, I just don'ttrust her. I don't trust her.
I don't think he's a good friend. She also asked Kate if she wants
to watch Clerks again. Okay,so funny. I like part of me
was rolling my eyes at this, the other part of me because you know,
(01:25:20):
she's Kevin Smith's daughterr and like, but the other part of me was,
well, that movie was huge backthen. Oh yeah, for sure,
I didn't me. I wasn't eventhinking about Kevin Smith. That's so
funny. I was thinking more justbecause it was really popular at that time.
It's just so funny to think ofKate going from like watching Silence the
(01:25:44):
Lambs and Misery to like Clerks.Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm glad
she's in your case. I feellike, you know, dad references aside.
I feel like Mallory's definitely the onethat was like, oh you gotta
see this movie. Oh yeah, that's a that's a Mallorie pick. And
(01:26:09):
then Kid's like, great, Ilove it, and then she's like,
great, let's watch it again.Exactly. It comes up twice in this
episode clerks. Yeah, yeah,Calorie, like she mentions it twice.
(01:26:30):
She's like, well the first yeah, yeah, yeah, and yeah,
so she went It's just it's sofunny, Like I wonder, I wonder
if the writers did that, orif she was like or if they had
some other movie in there. Mallorywas like, hey, can I can
(01:26:51):
I say clerk since it's my dad'smovie. It's so funny. Yeah,
I feel like the writers were probablywould be funny. Who'sa this? Yeah,
I'm sure, I'm sure. SoHate Hate tells Mallory. She thinks
Jeanette sent the liar letter and perhapsis trying to go out in public at
(01:27:15):
the carnival to taunt her. No, girl, I don't think so.
I really don't think she would dothat. But meanwhile, Jeanette is at
home asking her dad if he's stillon her side. He seems so like
(01:27:36):
apathetic and Luke Warren the last fewepisodes, Greg replies saying that Janette isn't
even on her own side. ThanksDad, helpful. Yeah, he said,
I don't like Greg. I'm sorry, I don't like him. He
(01:28:02):
just I think he's a crappy dad. Yeah, he's not been very supportive,
Like he's very self serving, especiallyin this conversation, because the next
thing he says is that being onJeanette's side has cost him his job,
his reputation, his family, andwill probably cost him the house. Like
(01:28:26):
why if you think your daughter shouldbe on her own side, then why
on earth would you speak to herlike this. It's it's awful, it's
it's terrible, Like, I mean, you know, And he says that
he says that he is on herside, but if he if he thinks
(01:28:50):
that, like if he really believesher, he has no business treating her
this way. Like I'm I'm sorry, but I like, I understand.
You have to have sympathy for peoplewho are going through things, and you
know, you got to give thema little bit of grace and dealing with
(01:29:11):
things how they want to. Butwhen you're a parent, you don't get
that same kind of grace. Youjust don't, like if your child is
going through the same thing and they'redealing with even like, especially since she's
doing dealing with even worse. Youhaven't like it sucks, and you know,
like you've ever right to feel badfor yourself, but you gotta suck
(01:29:32):
it up. Yeah, for sure. I can't have a pity party all
day. He says that she wouldnever heard a fly that he knows of.
Come on, shut up, Greg, let me ask you who do
you think is the better parent?Right Grasindy. I'm sorry, guys,
(01:30:02):
we're like we're freezing up a lotover here. Yeah, there's there's a
bit of a sorry. I don'tknow if you heard me. Oh I
did. I I was thinking Iwas sorry, guys, pluttering it over
in my brain. Honestly, Ifeel like Cindy is probably the better parent.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.I mean, even though it sucks
(01:30:25):
that she took off. Yeah, like she which is really sucky, Like
you know, that's that's awful,Like she shouldn't have abandoned Janette when she
needed her, But you know sheGreg is just oh god, like,
(01:30:49):
yeah, she needs to be thereright now because Greg is not being a
father. I'm also I think hejumped into a relationship way too soon.
After divorce waits seon. Yeah, and like for the sake of your kids,
I would I just think that's waytoo much, like there's too much
tumultuous stuff happening to be Also like, oh yeah, your mom's out of
(01:31:14):
the picture. Now here's this newlady. She's gonna be coming around a
lot, don't. I mean,I think it worked out because she is
great. Angela is actually the bestparent. Yes, exactly, exactly.
Like if all of the if allof the Cruel parents, if all the
Cruel Summer parents from season's one inseason two could just be like Rod and
(01:31:36):
Angela, things would be great forsure. So yeah, I mean it
worked out great. So I'm gladthat she did come into the picture.
But but yeah, it's like it'syou know, it's a little soon.
Yeah, I don't even divorced yet, right, I don't know, Like
(01:31:56):
that's a great soon. That isway too soon. Yeah, definitely be
so bad. So Jeanette is readingthe cover of the National, not the
Inquirer, the Inquisitor, which hasan article on her title Jeanette Turner geek
(01:32:19):
turned she turned psychopath? Oh god, l ol. Angela takes it and
just throws it out in the trashright in front of her and offers to
take Jeanette out. Pretty nice.Did not have to do that, but
(01:32:41):
you know, she's she's really theonly person that's other than Derek really willing
to show compassion to Janette. Sothank god for that. Yeah, seriously.
Meanwhile, Kate is at the carnivaland she goes to the dunk to
to see if it's Janette. It'ssomeone in a hoodie. They have their
(01:33:03):
face turned. She calls out tothem to show their face, and it's
Jamie, and of course she knockshim in the water. So that's good.
So when she wanted into the water, Yeah, that's so good.
I'm sure that felt great. Iwas glad to see that. So Angela
(01:33:28):
drives Janette to an undisclosed location thatwe don't know what it is at first.
They're going in through the back, which is also an interesting choice because
I feel like Janette at this point, like going around town. She probably
should enter from the back door ofa lot of these venues when she's in
public. Huh yeah, probably probablya good idea. So they go around
(01:33:55):
the back. We cut back toMallory and Kate's to walk around the fair.
They say they see Renee and Tanil, she was like really awkward,
honestly, and they're getting interviewed byjournalists and they are just talking absolute shit
about Janette. Oh my god. They don't really say hi to Kate though,
(01:34:20):
they don't say hi to Mallory. They're not like friends with Kate,
but they are willing to shit talk. Yeah, and like, okay,
I just have to say and youknow, like I have no room to
talk because apparently my laugh and rageouspeople, but I Renee's Renee's laugh just
(01:34:49):
triggers the hell out of me.Like it's that kind of like snotty giggle,
you know what I mean that,Like you know, she's like she's
very pleased, Like it's the thatkind of snatty giggle that's like that indicate
she's very pleased with herself and inlike trying to cut somebody down. Yeah,
(01:35:12):
oh god, it triggered me.So good job to the actors playing
Renee. Yeah, so good playingplaying these these bitches. Yeah. Yeah.
Also, they followed behind Jeanette whenin the nineteen ninety four timeline when
she goes in the Haunted House andthen they're like, watch where you're going,
(01:35:33):
It's like, why are you There'slike, obviously something happening here.
Ladies like you're just like great,we'll be there too, right, yeah.
Whatever. So Kate has actually broughther therapy tapes with her to the
(01:35:53):
carnival, and she's looking at theHouse of Mirrors listening to the tapes.
I feel like her intention was towalk around, like in the House of
Years, listening to the tapes. He starts to listen to the tapes while
she walks around the carnival, andthis is where it's in her cut with
(01:36:15):
the previous timeline. She talks aboutseeing Martin working one of the booths at
the fair. So meanwhile, wefind out that Angela has brought Janette to
the bar. Janette's like, great, I'll have a jack and coke and
she's like, no, you're gonnahave a coke? Yeah, and you
(01:36:39):
know she won't serve her. Jeanetteasks what she sees in Greg and you
know, Angela thinks he's a reallynice guy. Janette says she sees what
she used to see in him,or excuse me, specifically who he used
to be, and Angela tells herthat this is a recipe for disappointment.
(01:37:04):
It's a really good point. Yeah, and and that's a uh yeah,
that's also a major red flag thatthat Angela has some codependency issues. Yeah
for sure. Yes, not theperfect relationship. But basically Angela shows Jeanette
(01:37:27):
that they have this karaoke machine whichI had growing up, a machine that
looked just like it. I reallyneed to like get that from my house
and bring it with me to LA. I love I love doing karaoke now,
but I really only started doing karaokeliterally during twenty twenty. Oh my
(01:37:47):
gosh, yeah wow, Yeah,I started doing it in COVID and it
is It is really therapeutic, likesinging. It is really so therapeutic.
And like I don't have the bestboys, but I just have so much
given it my all, so muchfun, given it my all that you
(01:38:08):
know, it's enjoyable for me.Yeah, my, I have to share
a funny story. So like I'mI am just I am a total karaoke
whrror, Like I I mean, well, I love singing, you know,
I'm I mean, I'm a singer. I used to be in bands.
Any chance I have to sing,I love singing, even if it's
(01:38:31):
karaoke. And karaoke is just fun. And you know, I would get
to sing songs that I don't necessarilylike that I wouldn't necessarily sing with bands
because I don't sound good on themor whatever, or they're not like the
kind of songs that my band wouldplay, you know. So it's it's
a chance to do something else. But we used to, my husband and
(01:38:54):
I and some friends of ours usedto have these like monthly karaoke parties.
Uh huh at at this one friendof ours ours just loft and they were
so much fun. And I onetime, like I was, I wasn't
(01:39:15):
drunk, I was like a littletipsy, and I did the Humpty dance.
And my husband always references that herecorded it on his phone and references
that as the time that he wasthe most attracted to me ever, which
(01:39:41):
is which I think was just hilarious. That's so funny. But yeah,
karaoke is fun. Karaoke is thebest. They're they're doing karaoke too.
What's up by four non blocks?Well, okay, specifically, Angela says,
do you want to do karaoke?Janette goes, I don't sing,
(01:40:02):
and then when we cut back, they're already in the middle of singing What's
Up by four non Blondes, whichafter Yellow Jackets, I did start doing
What's Up on karaoke. It's somuch that song is so much fun to
do on karaoke. Yeah, it'sit's really is a good karaoke song for
sure. Yeah, so good.Meanwhile, with Kate at the carnival,
(01:40:29):
she sees Jamie drinking after the dunktank. He like made a bet with
someone for a six pack and wonthe bet. Lucky him. But I
mean Kate's really looking down on himat this point, like he's just embarrassing
himself. He to say that hewasn't Janette Turner. He's fallen pretty mighty
(01:40:55):
in the last two years. Yeah, definitely for like, so he's plastered.
But he tells Kate that she wasright. He did kiss Jeanette in
the park last summer and he didlie about it, and he apologizes.
Thank god, it's about the time. Too late, way too late,
(01:41:17):
but way too late, way toolate. He literally it took him a
year so far, too long, unredeemable. But Kate really appreciates it.
She kisses him on the cheek andsays it's the nicest thing he's ever done
for her, which is like sosad. Yeah, he was never a
(01:41:42):
good boyfriend. I Also, I'mlike she was never that into him either.
Yeah. Well, I mean Idon't know, like she she did
seem like she seems pretty indoh whenwe first saw them at them all,
you know, like she there werea couple of other times where she seemed
like she was really happy with him. I feel like she was like attracted
(01:42:05):
to him because he's key, Butlike that's like the extent their characters like
are just not a match. Yeah, they Yeah, they really are.
I Mean there's a lot of stuffthat that we see happened later while they're
dating. We're just like, yeah, she definitely doesn't seem like she's really
(01:42:28):
invested. She does not like him. Yeah, yeah, So Janette.
Janette is in the middle of singingWhat's Up, and then she just kind
of freaks out and has to takea step away. You know. Angela
is like very supportive. Jeanette doesn'treally say what triggered her or what was
(01:42:51):
what was up, but she askedAngela why she's been so nice to her,
and Angela says, because Jeanette deserveskindness. She's just she's just so
pure, she's so nice. Iknow it worries me that she's throwing up
(01:43:13):
some some some codependent red flags becauseshe's not the type of person i'd ever
want to see like take an advantageof. Yeah, but yeah, she's
such a great character. Yeah, she's so sweet, and she always comes
in at like the right time forJeanette. Thank god, everyone's always screaming
at her top of the morning.Okay, exactly. So the last scene
(01:43:41):
we see just really broke my heart. This is where we get the second
time they mentioned clerks again. Bythe way, Kay and Mallory are climbing
a chain link fence. At first, it's unclear where they're going, but
then we realize they're at the cemeteryand Kate has brought the pink bunny that
(01:44:03):
she was given in the nineteen ninetythree timeline. She's brought it to his
grave and she buries the bunny athis tomb and also spits on it.
But of course that's not enough.I agree that is not enough, and
she actually completely smashes his tombstone.Yeah, totally deserved, totally deserved.
(01:44:32):
I hope it gives her at leasta little bit of peace. Yeah,
yeah, definitely that had to havefelt great. Yeah, I mean it
doesn't make everything okay, but no, it's just like a little bit of
like mental release at least, youknow, smashed the especially something so personal
(01:44:55):
is his tombstone, and like gettingrid of something he gave you that was
deaf. Definitely, like she probablydid like come back in the house and
that was just sitting there, youknow. Oh yeah, oh oh god,
oh wow. Yeah, I didn'teven think about that. Oh that's
awful. That's awful. God.Yeah, I but yeah, I'm I'm
(01:45:26):
glad that she did that though,Like it's I like to think of adult
Kate out there somewhere like living ina nice house where she's built a smash
room for herself. Yeah, shegoes to Have you ever done one of
(01:45:49):
those, Kelly, No, I'vealways wanted to. They can be kind
of expensive, like my friend wantedto do when there were seventy five bucks
and like me my bucks, butthat Christ will just smash what I have
in my house, honestly. Yeah. Well, I mean I can imagine
it, like it's there's a lotof overhead there because like you know,
(01:46:11):
you got it put a bunch ofshit in there that, yeah, for
sure used once and gets destroyed. You know. Yeah, I've never really
had an interest in smashing things, but I mean, I can one percent
understand why Kate would want to justabsolutely decimate that tombstone. Oh yeah for
sure. But yeah, I don'tknow. One of these days I kind
(01:46:35):
of want to, like, Idon't know. We my husband and I
were talking about going acts throwing soon. Nice. That might be a good
way to let off attention. Forsure, I get I could. I
can imagine a few people that thatI could see myself a few heads heads
(01:46:55):
you're throwing at, yeah for sure. Oh my god. So what did
you think of this episode? Overall? It's it's a heavier episode. I
still think it's good, but itis a little bit I want to say
creepy, but it's it's creepy ina very specific way. It's not creepy
(01:47:19):
like a supernatural horror movie. It'screepy like icky pedophile man. So it
kind of like the episode gives methe ick, you know, it gives
me like a little bit of likecringe, but not cringe like ooh,
embarrassing cringe like ooh, this isjust so uncomfortable, but that's the point
(01:47:45):
and that's the intention. And Ithink they handled this episode really well.
And I mean I've mentioned it before. I think that this show does a
better job at showing grooming than likea lot of other shows that have supposedly
tried to do that. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah it's a
(01:48:11):
yeah. I just it was agreat episode. It just made me so
mad. It's very crusting, yeah, I mean, but yeah, it
was a point, so like itwas effective. They did their jobs,
like by making us mad, youknow, Yeah, but I am Yeah,
you know, I like the pastcouple of episodes we haven't really seen
(01:48:38):
well, I mean that the parentsare secondary characters in general, but I
feel like I wish that we thatwe could have gotten more Rod in this
season. Yeah, we're gonna get, Like I know, I really like
a little like monologue he has comingup in one of the later episodes that
(01:49:00):
I've literally remembered because it was sotouching and sweet, like a stepfather monologue
basically, So I'm excited for that. But yeah, it would have been
interesting too because we get a littlebit of Joy and Steve, so it
would have been fun to see likeRod floating around two. Yeah, yeah,
(01:49:23):
yeah for sure. Do you like, do you think that Renee,
because Renee and Tomil were so meanto Jeanette in this episode. I mean,
(01:49:47):
how do you think they reconcile that? Like, I mean, I'm
sure Jeanette didn't care because like, just like whatever, I'm hanging out with
the popular kids now, But Imean for them to go from like making
fun of her with her date,so, you know, suddenly being her
(01:50:10):
best friends. Yeah, that's areally good point. It reminded me of
the scene in I think the pilotwhere they're shopping with Jeanette and they like
re recall that they weren't friends withJeanette until after Kate, and it's like,
how did you forget that? Comeon? Yeah, you know,
(01:50:33):
I feel like they almost see heras two different people. Yeah. Yeah,
it's weird the before and the afterkind of. And you know,
I mean they never apologize for thethings they've said to her, and I'm
sure there have been even more thingsthey've said about her or to her face.
(01:50:58):
So I just feel like, youknow, they're kind of they're bullies,
you know, and like if you'rea nerd, you're fair game.
And now that she's not like she'snot fair game. But I mean you
see, like they turn around andtalk shit about her. There's no no
one's ever like, hey, shouldwe depose Renee and to Neil for Janette.
(01:51:19):
No, like, no one askedthat because it's like also, you
know, just like Jamie the MinnieKate comes back their team Kate and that
loyalty is out the window. Idon't think they ever really had a real
friendship. I think it was justbuilt on like hotness. Yeah, yeah,
(01:51:44):
probably, it's like and you knowthey I think Jamie was probably more
their friend, and you know, she was dating them, so they had
to kind of like learn to getalong, you know. Yeah, but
yeah, it's just kind of weird. But yeah, that's that's the episode
and we will see. This isepisode five, so we've got five weeks
