In this Cruel Summer episode recap, we're discussing season 1 Episode 3: Off With a Bang.

In this episode of the Freeform show Cruel Summer, tensions escalate as Kate Wallis decides to share her story, potentially tarnishing Jeanette Turner's reputation.

In a surprising turn of events, Jeanette decides to sue Kate for defamation, preparing us for a courtroom showdown. But just when things couldn't get any crazier, Jeanette finds herself on the receiving end of Kate's rage when she pulls up next to her at a stop light.

In 1993, Mallory is furious with Jeanette for accidentally flushing her mom's bag of joints down the toilet.

However, amidst all the drama, a sweet twist unfolds as Vince and Ben, who appear to be up to something shady, are actually revealed to be a secretly dating couple, sneaking off to dance together. We're not crying; you are.

I really liked this one a lot. Other than Greg, Greg pitched

have gone both ways. One,It's like he could have went through Jamie's

my daughter? You know, which, like with the appropriate route, he
kind of went like lukewarm, youknow where It's like, yeah, I
did just show up to your doorand talk to your child. But I
also feel like he could have justDerek could have like punched him in the

face, you know what I mean, Like there were a couple opportunities this
episode where I'm like, people justcould have like beat each other up.
I know, he almost did.He almost really almost did. He really

It's like his son is loitering.It's like, no, he's standing on

her argument, and she should betaken She should be taken seriously when she
says that, like, you know, she's Kate's lying and she didn't see

There's this Okay, I a littleoff topic here, but I watch there's
only two shows on Bravo that Iwatch anymore, and well, I guess

But I watched Vanderpump Rules, andI watch all of the blow decks
and the blowdeck that's on right now, it's the Australian one, and it's
so funny because the captain who's who'ssuper hot. By the way, the
captain like can't put his own contactsin. He must have a problem touching

feel like it would be worse ifI had someone else touching my eye.

or sister's stash and they're gonna beupset. It's her mom's, which is

be like I gotta talk to mymom about This's just like it's so funny
because I mean, especially like comparedto the other timelines, this episode,
like this is where she's way moreclose to her mother and like telling her
secrets, and I mean, youknow, like her her mom finding out

that Mallory's bringing pot into the housecould like bite her in the ass,
like real, real easy. Butyeah, he's like, well, Janette,
you know you did the right thing, such a good girl, flushing

to skip the fireworks this year,even though she's very excited because she's she's
just not in the mood for fireworks. She's in the mood for breaking an
entry. Yeah. Yeah, Sowhile the fireworks are going on, Janette

goes over to Martin Harris's house again. She finds a yearbook from a different
school he taught at. Nothing reallylike incriminating. She just finds this photo.
You know, I feel like itcould have been an opportunity for something
skathing, but it's not. She'slike, she's like flipping through the pages,

taking her good old time, andthen she runs and she brings the
yearbook to Mallory's house and it's like, hey, I completed list number thirteen.
Steal something. Here's Martin Harris's yearbook, and Mallory is so impressed that
she went back to Martin Harris's houseand she's like, oh, you know,

I wanted to show you like Itake the list really seriously. Which
is this whole exchange? Just Ifeel like was so organic and like the
nineteen ninety three timeline, this episodefelt very like genuinely fifteen years old,
and I think it was just likea great piece of good writing and like

like that, you know, thefight is over and Mallory invites her in
for some pizza bites. Yum.I'm more of a bagel bite bite squirrel
pre my vegan days. I absolutelydespise pizza rolls. I can't stand them.

She's like yeah, yeah, she'sgot like a smile on her face.
She's like, you know, Ifeel like this is the first time we
see she's now keeping a secret fromeveryone. So this is like really big

know about it. Yeah, andyou know it's uh, by the way,
I just looked up. I wasjust trying to look up who who
did that cover, because I reallylike that too, like just a little
bit that we heard of it.And as I was looking that up,

I came across I actually came uponthe woman Minna. The woman who played
Minna. Her name is Raja O'Hara, and she actually was a contestant on
the eleventh season of Rupulse Drag Race. Oh yeah, I was gonna say
that that makes a lot of sense. I totally see someone like, I

mean that that makes sense that theywould give that bit to her and and
give her those lines that are likethis is a safe space, Like yeah,
yeah, it did seem like Ididn't think about it at first until
you mentioned it, but it didseem like a like a very deliberate,
like focused cameo, you know,like that somebody that people would recognize should

be in So that makes sense.But yeah, I it's yeah, that
cover was really good and if Ican find the name of the band who

going into the ninety four timeline,Cindy is Cindy's watching the report on Kate's
case, and uh, you know, the police have confirmed that that Kate
has been interviewed and she's planning toshare her story publicly, and she's she's

freaking out. Cindy's freaking out aboutthis, yeah, and uh, she's
she tells Derek. Derek's like onhis way out, and she's like,
you know, make sure you tellall Like Derek's like people are already talking
anyway, like Hank Stevenson pulled outas something and yeah, he's seen from
parties. Yeah yeah, And she'slike, well, well tell all your

friends that that Jeanett's innocent. Likeshe's just freaking out right now, she's
panicking. And so Dan, Ilove I love that there's always like there's
always like just one or two charactersthat are just constantly mentioned in in a

TV show. I mean, weknow who the Stevenson's are. It's like
Hank and Babs, the guy withthe cowboy hat and his wife, they're
the parents to Tucker. But it'sjust like so it's not like we don't
see them. But it's so funnybecause there's always like you know that one
that that one character or a couplethat's just like they're just back, they're

just in the background. But likeyou hear about them a lot more than
you see that. Yeah. Butyeah, So then Derek finds his dad
and oh wait, I'm sorry,can I can I back it up a
little bit. So Jeanette was layingon the couch listening to Cindy and Derek

have that exchange the whole time,the whole reading. You know, I
feel like a lot of times,cruel Summer loves to pick like a very
dark They love to pick like,oh, everyone's everyone's watching a black and
white horror movie or some like oldmovie that like in no one is watching,

or they're reading like a mystery bookor some like book relevant to the
plot. I thought it was funnybecause the book she's reading is wisdom inside
my fifteen year old mind. Butyou know what I absolutely think that was
supposed to be is chicken noodle Soupfor the Soul. Oh my gosh,
that is like an absolute time capsuleof a book I do not know.

And there were like a million differentspecific versions of it. So I was
like, it should have been chickennoodle soup for the fifteen year old soul,
because I guarantee you if they madea book, if not like for
the teenage soul, like even morespecifically, like for the teen for the
