The Miseducation of Luke Chambers

What a great episode! Brilliant acting and direction, and they really did a fantastic job of showing just how much Luke's environment contributed to the actions that unfolded in this season. I like subconsciously just wanted him todress like Cole Sprouse honestly, but that
I saw Luke was wearing it thisweek, and so it was like,
oh, great, perfect. Soit's like, Adam, where's that jacket?

Can you bring it over? Igot this podcast recording. It felt
kind of bad, but he waslike, it's okay, girl, you
got this specific thing going for yourpodcast where you dressed like the characters.
So I understand, and I waslike great, thank You know wait,

Cole Spruce, he's Cole Spruce,the one that was on Friends. Yes,
yes, yeah, see he wasRoss's kid. Yes. So anytime
I think of Cole Spruce, Ijust think of him as as as this
really little boy. I had abig crush on him on Sweet Life of

Zack and Cody, especially specifically him, not his brother Um. And then
you know, Riverdale rolled around,and of course I watched Riverdale, and
then you know, now here Iam watching Cruel Summer Nice. Um so

I just, uh, by theway, my nickname I pulled the record.
Um, I took from the scenein this episode where I Luke means
Tom. You know, he's talkingto Jack sheriff Jack about pulling the rip
chord and blowing up his life byjoining the Coastguard. And I did actually

pull the rip chord and blow upmy life. And I don't know if
I'm living the dream, but um, I kind of had to do it.
I I mean I I guess hedidn't have to, but I mean
I really needed to. So Ijust did it. And I'm glad I

did it it definitely, like wouldnot have undone it. Undone it if
I could undo it. I don'tknow if I'm living the dream, but
I'm definitely glad I did it.My wife is much better for it.
So I don't know what that reallysays. I mean, it's not something
I'm overly proud of or ashamed of. It's really neither here nor there.

So it's not really an accomplishment ora regret. It's kind of something that
happened, So it's not really anythingexciting. I wish it could be.

of an airplane, and I don'tthink I will. Don't think that for
me. I would like to,but I don't think I can, just

I mean, it just looks likethe landing you have to have it
looks like it might be a littlerough on the ankles, and I have

look down and jump out of anairplane. I feel like my fear of
heights has been growing the older Iget. Oh no, yeah, I'm
progressively getting more and more skier,skiered. He is skeered, m scared

of heights. So I don't knowthat I could jump out of an airplane.
My boyfriend really wants to do that, but he might just have to
do that by himself. Yeah,I am. Yeah. I Like there's
all this stuff that I've wanted todo that I've never done, mostly because
I met my husband. I metmy husband when I was like twenty eight,

and we spent so much time together, Like I mean, we spent
almost every day together since we met, and um, it just he's terrified
of heights and like I could neverget him to go to go to amusement
parks are like I mean, youknow, he's never wanted to do like

he never wanted to do anything likeI don't know, Um, like he
wouldn't go he wouldn't even go parachailing. Um, he wouldn't go zip lining,
Like you know, he won't doany of that stuff. I've never
been zip lining. I'm not surethat I would do that either, because

I'm just like I don't know,I don't I don't like not having any
think under my feet. I don'tlike like if the zip line gets just
stops and you gotta like you know, kind of like rock to get it
going again. Like who are thesepeople that set up a giant, giant

I really enjoy feeling like I'm gonnadie. I like like a roller coaster
that like I know, what's youknow, if it's like a roller coaster
I've been on like fifty times,Like I don't mind it. If it's
something like yeah, like a zipline or like I don't I would like

to think I could go parasailing.I don't think I could. Now,
I think you and you and Adamsshould go do the fun things and me
and your husband can watch your guysand wave from grab from the safe grounds.

I won't the other the other thingthat I won't do though, is skycamping.
Like that is just that look horrifying. Do you know what that is?
No? What is that? That'swhere it's like Okay, So you
know how those like covered hammocks hmmm, um, that you can get to
like keep mosquitoes out or whatever.Um if you just want to lay in

it hammock, like you know,not worry about mosquitos. So you basically
sleep in one of those way upin the air like with nothing under you.
Um yeah, just like suspended whatI don't know what? Yeah,

won't do it. Yeah me neither. Um So, anyway, what did
you, um, why did youthink of this episode? I really liked
this episode, probably like one ofmy favorites this season. You know,

a lot of really great details,a lot of great performances by the actor
plane Steve. I feel like he'skilling it in his role as as Luke's
dad, and his dialogue is justlike he's just the perfect jerk, you
know, like he's so aggressive andrude and like he makes a lot of

really great choices. This episode.We learn a lot about Luke from his
perspective that's very enlightening. Is Lukeoff the hook? No, he's still
in big trouble in my book,so Steve, Steve, huge trouble.
Still no sign in my my PolarBear costume unfortunately, So I feel like

that's not going to happen by thefinale, but who knows. Um it.
I absolutely loved this episode so muchI wanted to marry it, like
just oh my god, it wasso good. Um, it kind of

made me it really kind of likeI don't know, like I don't know
what to think about how he sawIsabella, Like it kind of angered me,
but at the same time, likeit just because I mean, the

whole thing was just from his perspective. Yeah, Um, you know,
I mean she basically just this wholeepisode just seemed like I mean, she
just seemed like a like a scheming, conniving beach um who wanted nothing but

to get him out of the picture. But because the whole thing was from
his that's how he saw her.Um. And it's so it wasn't like,
you know, if somebody was lookingat this episode from just on the
surface, they'd feel like, whyis she acting like this? That's that's
not how the show is trying toportray her. That's just how he saw

her. Um. And like it'sI don't I don't know if it was
like I don't know if we shouldtake if we should put more weight into

his insecure because she she does obviouslyshe she does. She is a little
possessive with Megan, um, butit's it's not quite to the extent that
he see her. Yeah, Imean, I feel like us seeing some

of the conversations we saw for thevery first time. You know, it's
not like they're doing well. Imean, they did kind of play back
the Christmas party from a different perspective, you know, but I mean some
of the conversations, like the Halloweencostume stuff and like where Megan kind of
stood Luke up and she was outwith Isabella. That like we were seeing

those for the first time. AndI mean, I do think Isabella has
been Like last episode, we talkedabout how she was feeling, and that's
like as Luke and Megan like hadjust gotten together. So like now Luke
and Megan have been together for twomonths or October it was like August,

so you know, like three months, four months have gone by, and
now, I mean, I dobelieve that Isabella could be trying to sabotage
Lucan Megan at this point, likeshe's just like fed up. I Like,
I definitely do think it is Luke'sperspective, and like, you know,

I don't know if the finale we'regoing to see something from like Isabella's
perspective or even like part of itfrom her perspective. I would like that,
But I also feel like if it'sthe finale. They just need to
tie everything up with a bow,you know, So I'm afraid we're not
going to get it. But yeah, no, I do think Isabella is

trying to ruin the relationship though.Okay, okay, but yeah, I
like, I think that they didsuch a good job and and like you
said, I don't He's still totallyon the hook for me, Like I'm

not giving him any grace here.Okay, maybe a tiny bit of grace,
but only in the sense that youreally see how much he was molded
um, which you know, whichis where like the title of the episode
really comes into play here, themiseducation of lu Chambers. Like you see

how how his father is in hisbrother, and like the pressure that they
that they put on him to justbe an absolute douchebag. Yeah, And
like I was, I was lookingat this, and like I was watching

the scenes with him and Jack,and I'm thinking, like, could you
imagine if like, because Luke,Luke is different than Brent in the sense
that Brent just seems inherently scummy.Yeah, Luke doesn't. Luke still,

in my opinion, doesn't seem doesn't. I don't know, maybe he is
inherently scummy, but I don't know, there's still something that now, you
know what, He's just he's justa charmer, that's all it is.
Because he's still he still doesn't seemto really have any remorse. I think

he's still like a little bit moresensitive than them. Like when Brent insults
him or hurts him, he likehas a really hard time just like letting
it go and move on, WhereasI feel like if Brent had a brother
like Brent, he would probably justkind of like roll with the punches a

little bit more and like be ableto just like shrug it off and move
on. You know. Luke hasa really hard time just like letting the
stuff with his father and Brent go. I think, um yeah, it
just like it just made me think. I mean, can you imagine if

if Jack were his father. Ijust think he would be such a different
person. Yeah, yeah, forsure. Oh my gosh, if Brent
wasn't his brother, like point blankyou know, yeah, yeah, it's
it's it's really yeah, it's reallya shame. Um. Well yeah,
why don't we uh, why don'twe get into it? Um? So

it starts out really cute and getssad at the same time. Um,
it's September. It's uh, butit it's we're starting off with like,
basically the whole thing is taking placein the fall of nineteen ninety nine,
with the exception of the scenes whereLuke is UM in the winter of nineteen

ninety nine or yeah, winter ofnineteen ninety nine, nineteen ninety nine turning
two thousand. Yeah. Um,So Luke is watching a tape from his
from one of his mom's birthdays.UM, and it's really cute. They're
the boys and Megan are little,and they're running around and they're talking to

the camera and um, her nameis Jane. UM. There's a cake
that's his happy birthday Jane and UMStephen Jane are being really cute and affectionate
and Jane is very adorable. UM. And it's just they're just a really
cute, sweet family, and it'sit's really sad. Luke's just kind of

watching the video and crying and UM. We then see Luke relaxing on a
float in the pool and we heara bittersweet symphony playing HMMA, my babes
um. The song that plays atthe very end of Cruel Intentions. Oh

okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right. Yeah. Um,
Brent flips him and holds him underlike an absolutely douchebag, and Steve makes
him stop and then tells Luke thathe's being dramatic when he when he tells
Brent he could have drowned, likeyeah, this is christ what the fuck?

Um, they're they're honoring their mom'sforty third birthday. M hm um,
they're having cake and it's been tenyears since she passed away. Um,
and apparently like we're talking about somelike some story when they were in

a water park and she jumped intoa fountain with all her clothes on and
like after the park had closed andlike some guy came out with yellow at
her so shout the fountain like crazy, like okay, yeah she was yeah,

okay, she was fun. Butyeah yeah I don't know. Um,
but uh yeah, Brent's just beinga total douche bag. And you
know, it's it's He tells Lukethat, um, he kind of reminds

him of her mm hmmm a littlebit, like he has her sense of
humor, and Brent men, yeah, it's uh you, um what did
you say? He says, Uh, you're definitely more in touch with your
feminine side, and you'll probably bestarting your period sues. Yeah, awful,

awful when it's like, that's probablythe nicest thing Steve has said to
Luke in like a pretty long time. And also I feel like that could
be part of the reason that it'shard for Steve to connect with Luke is
because it makes him sad because Lukereminds him of his wife. Yeah yeah,

um, yeah for sure, umand uh yeah, and then they
go off to play tennis. Um, it's just it's a it's a really
interesting scene. I mean, it'sjust you know, you can you definitely

can kind of see the dynamic andkind of imagine how things would be different
if she was still there. Youknow. It's it's really it's it's really
a shame. I mean, andwho knows, like maybe she maybe she
was you know, I mean,we don't know anything about her other than
you know, she she seemed lovelyand adorable on the two seconds of the

video that we saw her, butyou know, we know nothing about her.
She could have been a terrible person. Who knows. But um,
you know, I mean, somethinghad to have influenced Luke to like have
some sort of side that wasn't exactlylike Brent and Steve. I mean,
there's still some part of him that'spulling at him to to, you know,

want to not be a total douchebagall the time, that is getting
suffocated out by that other side.Yeah. But so we see we see
Isabella and Luke and Megan at thepier talking about their first day of school.

Now I take issue. I'm takingissue with something. Um, this
was nineteen ninety nine. Okay,this was like a few years after I
graduated high school. I assume thatthis was, Like I'm assuming me didn't
go home and change that. Thiswas right after school. I went to

a public school. There's no wayin hell that any of the schools in
my area would have let Isabella wearthat dress. It was a huge dress.
I mean, I didn't think therewas anything wrong with it. Um,

Like I don't think I mean,I don't think there was anything wrong
with it. I mean, likeit was, she hardly had any skin,
I mean, she hardly had anyskin showing it was it actually was
fairly conservative, but you know,it just wasn't It was very not school

code nine nine. Um. Imean Jesus. I mean, sleeveless shirts
were barely acceptable. I like,addressed with cutouts would not be acceptable.
But I appreciated the fact that itwas very very very y t u k

um, very very spun on forfor the the year. It was very
cute. But yeah, if shewere at my school, she definitely would
have been she definitely would have beenin a dean's office. She would have
been put in a dean's office Tshirt and shorts. Yeah, I was
gonna say she'd end up in oneof those like oversized T shirts you have
to wear when you break the dresscode. Yeah, did you ever?

Did you ever get put in oneof those? No? No? I
Okay, at my school, youweren't. There was like you weren't allowed
to wear spaghetti straps. I don'teven think they had a rule about like
cutouts per se, but they probablywould have flagged it too, but it

was more like spaghetti straps or thingsthat were strapless. But generally like you
could get away with it if youhad like a cardigan on or something like
that. So that's what I woulddo, is Like, So one time
I was at school and okay,long story short, I found out I
had a kidney stone, but Iwas like in terrible pain, and so

I went down to the nurse's officeand they pretty much just like gave me
advil and I was waiting for mymom to pick me up to literally like
go to the emergency room. AndI was in like a tube talk up
dress and I had like a littlecardigan with it, and the nurse,

nurse Dottie was her name, shewas like, also, it's like we're
literally on our way to the emergencyroom. I mean, like agony.
She's like also just so you know, um, you are breaking dress codes.
So and it's like I was asenior. I'm like, are you
kidding me? Like bye bye,I gotta go to the hospital like flag

me later. So I didn't getin trouble. I didn't get in trouble
for that one, damn. Soyeah, you know, like I never
I never broke dress code. ButI remember there was this girl in my
school. I felt so bad forher because again this was the nineties,

like we were just moving into gettingair conditioning and well and yeah, um
and so not even all classrooms wereair conditioned. Um, like we would
have those you know, giant boxfans or whatever in the classes that weren't,
but still it, you know,like who knows. Um, I

felt so the girl in my school. I felt so bad for her.
She was constantly constantly getting getting sentdown to the dean's office to get sweatpants
to put on because her shorts weretoo short. Well, her shorts were
too short because she was like sixfeet tall. I mean, she was

taller than most of the boys inschool. Like, I mean, this
girl, like she's hot, likeyou know what I mean, she's probably
sweaty because there's no she needs towear shorts. Yeah, and like and
she would just I mean, andshe would just wear like it didn't matter.
She's like I can't. She's like, what am I gonna do?
Like what do they want me todo? I can't find shorts that fit,

Like I can't find shorts that areany longer. That's ridiculous. Yeah,
um but uh yeah, so anyway, um, yeah, Isabella's Uh.
Isabella was so excited to have alocker, but unfortunately it smells like
bologney, of course, because youknow, she didn't have she didn't have

a locker in boarding school, soshe was really excited to have one.
But it smelled like bologney. Um. But yeah, but apparently they all
do for some reason. Um,I was kind of bummed that we didn't
get to see that, we didn'tactually get to see them at school.
Um yeah, it is like straightchange scene, like the summeriness of it

all, start to leave, leavethe show because it feels like a very
summary show. And like, Imean this jacket, like the stuff that
Luke and Megan are wearing, likeprogressively throughout this episode gets more and more
fall Um. So, I don'tknow. That for me was like kind
of you know, It's like Iknew eventually we would hit a point where

they're starting school, but it wasjust like, I don't know, it
was kind of funny. I yeah, I really wish we got to see
them on the first day. Yeahyeah, me too. Um so she
is Isabella is reading Cosmotive or Cosmotivemagazine, Cosmotive you know the famous publication,

Yeah exactly. Um and uh andand reading a compatibility quiz. I
remember I was dating this guy whotold me that he was dating some girl
who broke up with him because heum, because of a quiz that she

took in Constropolitans that's so funny.Yeah, sign and she got one.
So she's like, okay, Dentaking it to heart. Yeah yeah apparently,
um but yeah, it's it's it'sit's kind of funny like the so

um Luke apparently did not realize thatMegan does not want to play. Um
wait, what was that that sheonly wants to play for like an hour
at a time and not for anentire weekend? Video games? Like there
was one in particular, I thinkit was Mario Kart okay, Okay,

I couldn't remember. I didn't Ididn't jot it down. But she's like,
yeah, well yeah, it's funfor like an hour. See.
I I was kind of surprised thatbecause she's such a computer person, I'm
kind of surprised she's not more intovideo games. Um but I mean I'm
not into I don't like video games. Yeah, um yeah. I I've

never been much of a game ormyself either. Like I like puzzles,
like if there's if there's puzzle typegames, like I'll play touch hers all
day long. I'm just like notvery good at like controllers and like hitting
things on like a timed I can'tlike ever get past like little levels of

things. I'm just I stink atit. So yeah, I get I
get where Megan's coming from. Andalso it's so funny. Her boyfriend's like,
yeah, you love playing video games. It's like, um, no,
I don't. But that's like sucha I don't know. That's just
such a funny little like, oh, this is my boy boyfriend's perception of

me, you know. Yeah yeah, um yeah, and uh like they
have a little fat over um overlike, you know, Luke, she

tells him he's more of a dreamerthan he realizes. And I agree.
I think I think Megan is arealist and Luke is a dreamer. Yeah,
oh yeah, for sure, forsure. Um yeah absolutely. But
h so you know, the douchebrow has come by and you know,

say some douche brow things and askhim, ask Luke if he wants to
hang um and uh he like theyyou know, they're um it's like he
decides he's gonna hang out with thegirls instead, and they were like all
right, who was before? Bros? We get it um And Isabelle is

like, hey, you can goif you want. We'll hold it up
all by ourselves. I love thatline, Sonny. Also, you know.
I mean I think she's I reallydo think she's like fed up of
the Luke and Megan of it allat this moment. Yeah yeah, probably
like I you know, and andI didn't I get it, Like I

get it though, Like she she'sturning a new school and you know,
she made this awesome friend and um, and you know it's just it's it's
a weird situation. Like she shewas dating Luke um and she you know

this, she had this best friendand they're both together. Now it's a
weird situation, oh for sure.But um but yeah it's uh Lukes,
like I'd rather hang with hang withyou guys anyways, like that this is
trash. It throw us down themegs and it is trash. But you

know, don't like like that kindof made me trash. I know,
I like it kind of made mebad though, like it is trash,
but you know, don't yet thereUm nice, Yeah exactly. Um,
but Isabella knew that they were gonnaflunk that compatibility to quiz that yeah,
oh totally totally. Um. SoLuke and Megan are pulling up to Luke's

house um after school, and LukeUm lucas telling some like telling some stupid
story about like Brent's frat is fightingwith some other frat and all their cars
got egged. And he's really kindof he's actually kind of bummed that he's

gone because like, as much asit sucks having him home, it's even
worse having him gone because now hehas to try to make conversation with his
dad and they have absolutely nothing totalk about. Um. And he said

(36:29):
that they like they put on ahe watched a documentary the other day about
hedgehogs just so they wouldn't have totry to make conversation so funny, um,
and it made me really sad.He like, they're going on a
field trip for school and he hadto put down his emergency contact, and

(36:53):
he put down Megan. Um.And he said it's like he basically like
he uses her as his emergency contactfor everything. And he tells her that,
like she's the one who's believed inhim the most ever since his mom

(37:15):
died, which has made me reallysad. Yeah for me, I was
like, oh, so she's pseudoMommy. Oh god, your girlfriend is
pseudo Mommy's love. Oh man,oh good ouch. Also, Megan is

like really excited by this field trip. She was like, can I be
your plus one? And I'm like, one, that's not how field trips
work. Yeah, that's never howthey've worked. And then he's like you
must be the first person that's everbeen excited to go on a field trip,
Like what are you talking about?Field trips were awesome. Field trips

are awesome. You get to skipschool to go do something else and not
like actually do work. Yeah,So that whole conversation I was like what
it was like, Yeah, whatuniverse of high school is this? And
they're going to like a planet areum. That's like fun, Yeah, that's
super cool. Like museums were thebest field trips. It was super cool.

Um yeah, like yeah, thosewere always my favorite field field trips.
Anytime we were going to a museumthat was I was super excited.
Um, except there was there wasonly one field trip that I took in
high school that was better than amuseum field trip, and that's when we

went to Graceland Cemetery, which islike this really well known cemetery in Chicago.
Um and um, we're like alot of famous chicagoans or are buried
and stuff, and we had todo a Um. It was from my
creative writing class and we had todo like a creative writing project um,

based on like on people who wereburied there. And it was like it

plans, but Isabella is really insistentthat they're happening. Um. And she

Very funny. This scene kind ofbugged me. Um, I it really
urged me how Isabella was talking forYeah, UM like, yeah, I

be seeing this as Luke's like,as Luke's perception of Isabella. So I

UM, Luke visits his dad atthe office to announce he got into

really excited, and Luke announces thathe also got into the Coastguard Academy,
and you know, Steve is like, oh no, not this again.
Um. And he says he's notgoing to pay for him to be in
the Coastguard Academy. Um. Healso says he's sick of trying to fix

Luke, which is very hurtful.And yeah, there's a lot of really
hurtful language. Um. Through spewingat each other, Luke says that,
m Steve, you you resented meever since the night of the accident.

Um. He says that mom shouldhave never been driving, but because you
had some work thing, you couldn'tbe there. I think Steve was having
an affair Ouch. I think hewas a philandering man, and that's really

to someone about going to Branson College, which is uh, you know what.
His dad pretty much says he'll bedoing um studying business there, and
Luke replies saying it's the Chambers Way, which when I heard that, uh,
that line hit me funny the firsttime. It was just like a

very strange kind of like phrase turnof phrase, and I was like,
hmm, that's like a weird reply. And now I'm like, oh,
I under he ends up gain introuble for that, you know, So
I'm like, okay, well thatmakes more sense. Um. Yeah.
Steve like pushes him, he pullsthem aside. He does not like that

(01:26:21):
little remark about the Chamber's Way.He shoves him into a food rack and
tells him, you know, tostop and cut it out. And reputation
is everything, Luke says, whenyou care about reputation more than you care
about the family, you know,So it's it's another really bad fight.

So Luke grabs the sex tape andhands it to someone who's working the Christmas
party, telling them that it's theholiday movie that needs to play. That
Luke cares not about cares about reputation, nor cares not about reputation, nor
about about family or friends. Right, Luke actually doesn't care about anything except

for getting back at his dad.Yes, because he is. He's screwing
over his reputation and Megan's reputation andyeah, so he just cares about being
spiteful. Like I just like Icould not believe I this surprised me.

I really was convinced that Isabella wasthe one who played the tape so
that she could fall on the swordof being like, oh, I'm such

and Steve says that with the scholarshipand everything that comes along with it,
could be time for Luke to cutbait and see what else is out
there, which he kind of saidto Debbie Um in the pilot too.

that was about? UM? Youknow, I kind of get where Steve
is going. I see I thinkfor it's like when they're like in high
school, they're like seventeen years old. I don't think like the first person

you're in a relationship is going tobe your soulmate. Per se and I
feel like most times the high schoolrelationships where you know, you go to
college and try to keep up longdistance, it's very hard. It usually
doesn't work, and you know youguys usually end up breaking up. So

care a lot about reputation. Hewould probably, like if Luke found some
girl that was equally wealthy and wellconnected and you know, would support him

short, all right, So,um, we find out that Isabella has
shot Luke's ear um. It wasreally just a graze, just like in
the autopsy report. He's fine,he's just missing a chunk of his ear
now, but he's in a lotof pain. Isabella is shooting that gun.

I mean, she is not helpingherself when Megan over. Megan is
helping Luke. Luke is finally gettingkind of this like one on one time
with Megan to kind of try toassuage her that he's wanted. He's begging
Megan to let her go. Isabellasays they need to leave immediately because someone

ned could have heard the gun fire. She's right, so she thinks they
should leave Luke tied up. Meanwhile, Isabella is taking the tape, she
takes her pills. I think theyleft the liquor there. It kind of
seems like the liquor lives at theYeah, And Megan takes this time to

tell Luke that she is pregnant.Bad timing, man, no, really
horrible timing. I was so shockedthat she did that, and I was
like, oh, well, Iguess she's got to tell Luke. I
mean, they wouldn't give us apregnancy and then have her not confront him
with that, so they were gonnado it, but like she picked like

the worst time I really think possible. Yeah, yeah for sure. Um,
it's so funny. Yeah, likeI that yeah yeah, I yeah.

reaching out to someone for help.So to me, I feel like the
people he would normally reach out towould be his brother and Megan and Isabella.
The very first time I watched this, I thought maybe he did send

end date, I was like,well, wait, you know, I
do kind of wonder because all right, it's it's funny to me that we
haven't seen the two thousand timeline inthis episode. That feels very like purposeful.
