couple hours, and then we got some our video game room.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
That's awesome. Wait where is this in Detroit?
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Just north of Detroit? Uh, Saint Clair Shores.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
So if you know the mile roads, we're in between
eight and nine mile, like fifteen minutes north of Detroit.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah, a few weeks ago, I just drove right through there.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Oh did you really?
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah. My my wife, so my father in law is
actually lives in Detroit, lives in Warren, and.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
Uh, dude, we're the city overs Warren.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
So my my wife went to elementary through middle school,
she was in the Detroit area, and we went we
took we took the bike over Mackinaw and went to
Detroit for a couple of days to visit her her
her dad, and her stepmom.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
That's awesome. She went to school here? Yeah, oh no way. Yeah,
I went to lands Crust and North she.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Oh wow if she went to yeah, Warren, she went
to school. I think they were in Pontiac during that time,
but still either way that area.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, no way. What a small world.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
I know, man, I know kind of thinking about that, right,
Like you guys and and you know, our friends and
like we came as romans, like other bands from Detroit
we've become friends with over the years. I'm like, oh, man, yeah,
so cool. I keep hearing these guys talk about this
city and yeah, I because I've never been in the
city of Detroit until that weekend.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Oh yeah, there's a lot of a lot of cool
spots in Detroit, a lot of Okay.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yeah, I get it. And what was funny because they
kept telling me we went downtown. They showed me downtown
and they're like, yeah, we're gonna go, We're gonna go
take the people Mover, and I'm like, I thought they
were just jokingly calling it that, but it's actually called
the little like mono rail thing is actually called the
People Mover. I'm like, all right, I.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Don't know they couldn't take a more clever name, but
I I.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
There you go. Well, next time I'm in the area,
have to check what's the name of the card shop?
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Black Vault Gaming.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Black Vault Gaming, you have a Twitch stream as well. See,
I'm gonna let you promo all this right now.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Awesome.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
I haven't even introduced who's joining us on the countdown
of rock Cast this week, but you can do all that.
First brought to you by Wait one more Time, Black
Vault Gaming. This week's episode brought to you by Black
Vault Gaming. Find them between eight and nine miles on
the north side of Detroit. That's awesome. Hell yeah, that's awesome. Eric,
(03:05):
of course from the band I Prevail. Now I Prevail.
We've known now over the years, right, they've come to
this point where they've kind of become staples in the
world of hard rock and heavy metal. A new era
of I Prevail has begun. And Eric, it's so good.
It's so damn good to see your face, it really is, dude.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
It's great to see you, man. That's always good to
see you.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Run into you absolutely, Okay. First question has to be
the one you've been asked the most, and that is
so what happened? And what I mean by that is,
of course new era of I Prevail. What this isn't
w W E rawl. I want to say, new era
of I Prevail. Of course you are the standalone front
man of I Prevail. Brian's no longer in the band.
(03:47):
And we'll talk about the sound of the record because
it is different and all that as we get into
this violent nature is out. Now, what what happened? When
did this decision get made? Like? How did I'm just
curious and say what you want and say what you
can and not what you can't.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Yeah, but about a year ago, uh, we got word
I guess that things are gonna be different, and uh,
there's gonna be some changes. And and so we finished
out the last the last two tours, uh the Hailstorm
tour that we did and then the Australian Parkway tour,
(04:22):
and then the top of the year we were like,
all right, well, time to figure out what we're doing.
We started to get to work on a new record.
We had some some songs we started demoing on those
last tours, and that was like the first time that
we like really took time to write on the road
and to flex that muscle, that creative muscle. And then yeah,
once we got home at the top of the year,
(04:44):
that was last last October. Uh, took a couple of
weeks off just to reconnect and touch base at home,
and then we got to work and spent that whole
you know, six months after that October till I think
we went and tracked the record and finished it up
in February March, the final touches on it. And yeah,
(05:08):
very very excited for to have this record out and
for people to hear that these new songs. I'm very
very excited about the record. It's uh yeah, man, it's
it was.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
It was a challenge to learning.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Where to just finding my voice, really just finding my
voice for for the big choruses and singing singing stuff,
and and uh yeah, we got the world's got a
little taste of it so far. But we've got a
few more songs left the show. And really excited.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Here's the thing, right, a band, because a band's bands
go through changes all the time. That happens all the time.
But you as a singer, you've been sort of write
that screaming guy, and you know some of the hip
hop flavors and things as well. We've talked about that
at length. But to add that other element in how
much pressure did you feel now with the band put
on you? But I know you Eric, like, how much
(06:02):
pressure did you feel going into that going holy crap,
this is me now, Like I'm the front man of
this band. This is what i gotta do.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
I think, uh, the last couple of records singing a
little bit, doing some harmonies here and then live having
to cover when there was you know, vocal injuries or
whatever else may have been.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
I was kind of Dylan too.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
We were just kind of forcing that spot where we
had to sink or swim and and continue on with
these shows and figure it out. And and just being
in that spot and not having any any.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Water wings or a.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Life jacket, just jumping in and having to having to
to figure it out. I think definitely helped with the
confidence going into the record like all right, I've done it.
I just need to find my voice and and uh
one to have the guys behind me where I think
the first song we worked on with a big chorus
(07:01):
was rained, and John, Steve and I came up the
music bed and we're like humming some melodies over and
playing the acoustic over it and just kind of coming
up with a melody and had some had some rough
idea lyrics going into it and hop in the booth,
let's let's see what we can do, and to just
go in there and belt it and yeah, I keep
(07:22):
saying it, but find my voice and.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Belt for the first time really belt out a chorus.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
And knowing that I'm not going to step out and
if I of the booth and if I hit a
sour note or something, that they're going to go, oh,
I know that, you know, having them out on the
other side of the room, just like, dude, you got this.
That part sounded great. I think you can do this.
I think you could do that. Having Dylan there, who's
a phenomenal singer to help me with like vowel shapes
or or or just where to where to project from,
(07:52):
you know, on certain parts was a huge help. But
most of all, it was just just having the confidence
to go in there and know that like a right,
if I if I messed up this this part or something,
I'm not gonna It's not gonna be the end of
the world.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
I I got these guys that are.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Just you know, pat me on the back and reassuring
me that we're gonna figure it out. And and it was.
It was a challenge, but I'm I'm always up for
a challenge.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
That's awesome that they had your back like that, and
that's key.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Right, Absolutely absolutely, I don't think I could be doing
what I'm doing, uh without the guys on my side here, you.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Know, absolutely be able to forget dud Dylan's a great singer,
Like he's an incredible guitar player, I mean, what a
talented musician Dylan is truly as a guitar player myself,
like he's he's a very very good guitar player, but
an underrated singer.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Yeah, absolutely he's been.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
He's been covering and backing up and singing harmonies and
singing parts ever since day one, and uh he's been.
He's been crucial to the live stuff as everyone else
has their role, but he's been it's been very crucial,
uh for the live aspect and and now even here
(09:05):
helping me find the find my voice. He's been, uh
the reason he's one of my one of my good friends.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
He's he's got my back.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Violent Nature is the name of the new I Prevail album.
I wasn't I didn't know what to expect on a
hit play on it. So I hit play on it
and to hear you know that first song and it
be sort of this introspectful I don't know how to
explain it. Really, it's it's this like, you know, this
instrumental piece. It's slower the way it starts off, and
(09:34):
it's very industrial feeling. The whole album is very industrial feeling.
But to hear you immediately start singing instead of I'm like,
all right, this is Eric I Prevail. I'm gonna get
We're gonna get a nasty ass breakdown right away. No,
we didn't, you know. I mean really until n w
O hits you don't really get that that nastiness. You
(09:56):
know what did you guys want to do it that way?
Typically in the tracking of the album.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
What's funny about that first song, Synthetic Soul, is that
we had the record, we had ten songs already fleshed out.
We kind of had a pretty solid I think eighty
percent or seventy percent of the track listing was like
nailed down, and it was one of the last weeks
we had before we went to the studio to actually
(10:24):
final track vocals and drums. But we were like, let's
let's try and take a shot at right, and something
that's like kind of like an interlude or something fun,
like something that we don't really have on the record.
Maybe this more industrial, maybe ethereal, something something like theatrical
or dramatic.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Right.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
And and once we got working on it, like after
day one, I think we looked at each other and
we're like, yeah, this, this can't just be a little interlude. This,
this is this is turning into something. And I've said
it before, but it's I think you have to know
(11:00):
when to listen to the song. And I'm not just
saying by press and play. You have to know when
to hear what the song is building into and building up.
You know, you start it and you get it to
a you get a little foothold of the song like
where it's going, but then you gotta you gotta know
when to step back and let the music just kind
(11:21):
of guide where it's going.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
And this was one of those songs that we were
just like, all right, what's next? What feels right?
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (11:28):
What what does it need?
Speaker 3 (11:29):
And by the time we got it up to like
the bridge, and we knew we were gonna put some
breakdown or something in there. But before we even finished
the structure of the song, we were like, this is
the opening track, right, Yeah?
Speaker 1 (11:41):
You think so? I think so too.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Yeah, And we actually cut the original intro song and
PLoP this in there. And once we listen to this
this song in full and then through the record, it
was like, damn, this is I think this has to
be the opening track. It kind of has a taste
of what's to come on the record. It is one
of the songs, like the more theatrical songs that kind
(12:05):
of push the limits of our song right into this point,
and it kind of gives you a taste like when
you just take the record, press play, whether if you're
you know, the viral record, the CD, or you're on Spotify,
whatever it is, and you just hit play, it kind
of preludes what the rest of the you're gonna hear
on the record. It's got a little taste of everything
(12:27):
on it.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
It really does the industrial flavor of this album. I
really enjoy it a lot that is something you know.
I Prevail has sort of been that band that's been
able to go back and forth from super heavy metal
and giant metalcore breakdowns and rifts and screamy and hip hop,
but to hear the industrial side and even pop right,
but to hear the industrial side of I Prevail like
(12:51):
to have almost that nine inch Nails flare to it
a little bit, and not that it sounds like nine
inch nails. Just like, when you're talking about industrial, what
do you think of you think of nach nails, you
think of ministry. So, but there is some of that
on this album. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. I
could really do.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Yeah, that's We've always been a band that's we all
have very eclectic tastes. But if you ask anyone the
band like who's the metal head, they're gonna point at me. Yeah,
So when when the heavy stuff comes, it's like, all right.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
What are you thinking, Well, well, give a let's go.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
But uh yeah, it's always it's been fun to find
what the new flavor we're gonna indulge on in the
next record is, And it's never been something like we
sit down, We're like, all right, we're gonna influence the
record with this, or we're gonna have the main sonic
you know, sound, whatever you want to call it, be this.
(13:43):
It kind of just we start putting songs together and
you kind of start getting the vibe of like what
we've all been collectively influenced by, and it kind of
you put it through our filters, each of our filters,
and that's what I Prevail becomes, and or the record
that we work on the comes and.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Yeah, it was. It's trying to find.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
The balance of what what is the new I prevail?
What makes it fresh, what makes it, what makes it
stand out but not alienate what I Prevail is?
Speaker 1 (14:17):
And uh, you know.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
You got that classic issue with bands. Every every artist
feels it like all right, gotta do something new. But
we can't go too far, you know, and touch the sun.
You can't get too far away from your roots. But
you can't put out the same record over and over.
You're just gonna either plateau or just fall short.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
On that note. Eric, you know when you when you
put on Trauma, it has you have you get this
feeling when you listen to it. And I'm not going
to say the other albums Alvin had that, but that
album specifically had that you press play, it's like, oh
my god, I'm in for something here, you know. And
I get that same feeling when I pressed play on
Violent Nature from My Prevail, which is out now. Eric, Dude,
(15:02):
it's always a pleasure. I know. I get other of
these to do, even though your next one is with
a guy who sometimes fills in on this show. But
that's okay. Have fun with it, dude. One more time.
The name of the card shop if you ever in
the Detroit area.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Yeah, me and my friends opened a card shop called
Black Vault Gaming and Saint Clair Shores in between eight
and nine mile and Harper. And when I'm not on
the road, you can probably catch me up here slinging
cardboard and playing games.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
I love it. And a twitch stream as well.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Yeah, yeah, we have events up here and we've been
working on our twitch stream to have you know, the
top tables play.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
On stream, so fantastic worldwide.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Baby.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
My wife has been trying to get me to do
a D and D round with her and I just
haven't done it yet.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
Oh you gotta do it.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
I will. Eric. It's a pleasure, man. Thank you so
much for this, I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Yeah, thanks for having me. Always great catching up with
you Brotters rock Cast don't get you tune in exactly
