Speaker 1 (00:00):
On May eighth, twenty twenty, a young skateboard prodigy, Brazil's
Geek Curry to fine gravity at just the age of eleven,
spending not once, not twice, but three full times in
the air, landing the first ever ten eighty on a
vertical ramp. Not only was this a jaw dropping feet

(00:21):
and showed how relentless he was training, it also showed
how the sport is continuing to grow across the world.
He was from Brazil and just eleven years old. Kids
were proving that age was just a number and it
was passion and courage to reach the impossible. Join us
as we dive into Gee Curry's ten eighty and how

(00:42):
a kid can set records against men today on Daily
Sports History. Welcome to Daily Sports History. I'm Ethan Reese,
your guide as you daily learn more about sports history.
He see your sports knowledge now. Ge Curry's skateboarding story

(01:05):
began before he could even walk. His father, Ricardo, bought
him a mini skateboard as his first toy. By the
age of two, he was already pushing himself from the
table to the couch, and Riccardo's passion and encouragement was
crucial as he took gee to the local skate parts
and nurtured his love for the sport in the very beginning.

(01:26):
At just four years old, he started formerly skateboarding the
YAMCA CDs in California, a hub for some of the
top skaters in the world, and his first coach was
Jimmy Watkins, a future ex Game champion who inspired in
mentored geek through his formular of years, and by five
he was already dropping into half pipes, soaring above divert

(01:48):
ramps at high speed. Just to give you a reference
for this at five to distant saying, I used to
skateboard when I was a teenager, and I struggled to
drop into half pipes and get any air or do
any thing on that skateboard as a teenager. This kid
is five. He has no fear as if it is
a scary thing to do that you're going fast and

(02:09):
it's all reliant on your balance. He was surrounded by
a supportive community in the skateboarding world in these skills.
After the advanced he became the youngest skateboarder ever to
land a nine hundred, which is two and a half
complete turns. We covered the very first nine hundred landed
in competition with Tony Hawk, which was a huge moment
in skateboarding history. Needed this at the age of eight.

(02:32):
In twenty nineteen, at the age of ten, he became
the youngest athlete ever to compete in those escapes. Though
he did not win, just being there was huge for him.
His discipline has set him apart. He trains for hours
every day, driven for his love for speed and adrenaline.
Because he doesn't only do this, he also serves as well.

(02:55):
He just is an adrenaline junkie and loves to go
fast and be on a board of any type. And
by the age of eleven, he was not just a prodigy,
he was a pioneer. He was ready to attempt this trick,
the ten eighty three full rotations and become a legend,
just like Tony Hawks had done in years before. In

(03:16):
nineteen ninety nine, Tony Hawk landed the first nine hundred,
and in nineteen eighty nine no one thought landing a
nine hundred was possible, which is two and a half
complete spins aerial spins off a vertical ramp or half
pipe as we know it today, which half pipe is
imagine looking through in and of a pipe cut in
and half, and that's what a half pipe looks like,

(03:37):
made out of wood, and that's what we really associate
with skateboarding. Now there's other street types of skateboarding and
other ways to do it, but that is most common
in the most popular form, and him landing the nine
hundred took a lot of attempts and it was a
huge spectacle because everyone knew he was going to do it.
X game was literally at the heights, everyone was shearing form,

(04:00):
everyone was looking for that moment when he landed it.
It was huge. Like literally when we talk about storming
the field, they stormed the vert pipe. And after that,
the next milestone in skateboarding was the ten eighty, but
many didn't think it was even possible. Then in twenty twelve,

(04:22):
a twelve year old named Tom Shara became the first
person to land in ten eighty, although not in a
vertical half pipe, instead on a mega ramp. Now this
is a ramp you've probably seen it on videos where
it's like a seventy foot drop with a fifty foot
gap in between where they take off and they land,
so you can get some huge tricks done. And Tom

(04:43):
was able to land ten eighty taking this jump, which
is three complete rotations, but no one had done it
on a vertical half pipe. And it's a huge difference
between a mega ramp and a vertical ramp. It's much
smaller and more compact. You have less airtime, so you
have to spend even faster and be more precise in

(05:04):
your technique. And it would be years before someone would
land it, And it took probably something you wouldn't expect
for Gee to be able to do this. We all
know what happened in twenty twenty. The global pandemic of
COVID nineteen cut down everything, school sports, everything, But that
doesn't mean you weren't still able to train in the
sport or whatever you'd love to do. And he has

(05:25):
nothing but time on his hands, he's able to train
even harder. And his family had their very own vertical
pipe at their house, so he could train all the time.
And what was different about this time than other times
because when the nine hundred first came around, back when
Tony Hawk did it, it was all this like he said,
she said, rumors like this guy landed it, this guy

(05:47):
landed it. There was no like video proof or not
done in competition, all this stuff, but now everything is
on video. You can watch so many things. You can
video for your whole practice, so you can make sure
you don't miss anything. And that's what he did. He
would videotape himself practicing, taking notes on what he did
wrong or if he did something good, he could expand

(06:09):
on that. And that's what he did. He set up
a camera and through all his training. In May of
twenty twenty, during a global pandemic, there's hope in the
sports world. When we saw Gee Curry go one two,
three full rotations, landing low on the pipe but landing it,
becoming the first ever to land a ten eighty on

(06:31):
a vertical pipe at the age of eleven, it still
boggles my mind how young he is, but that was
of the process. Tony Hawk did his nine hundred at
the age of thirty one and it was difficult. Ghee
did his nine hundred at the age of eight, making
it easier for him to get to the ten eighty.
And the reason why a lot of people think this

(06:53):
was easier and it's been easier for these young kids
to be so good at these tricks, is because they're
smaller built, they're more flexible, and they can spin faster,
and if they have no fear, which you need to
have in these skateboarding competitions, they can do amazing things.
And he quickly got the Guinness Book of World Records

(07:15):
for landing this trick. But Gee wasn't done. He would
go on the next year, in twenty twenty one, to
become the youngest X Game champion, landing the first ten
to eighty in competition while facing the legend Tony Hawk,
who had came out of retirement for this, and he
landed it on his final attempt in front of all

(07:38):
his competitors. At this time, there was not the fanfare
because of restrictions still going on, so he was not
met by a mob like Tony Hawk was. It was
a very lackluster moment, but he had a lot of
lackluster moments during the pandemic. You don't have that crowd atmosphere,
which definitely changes things for sure. But Gee didn't just
stop there. He's continued to grow year after year, and

(08:03):
by the age of fifteen, he already has a record
eleven X Games medals, which is the most won by
a teenager, and he's continued to innovate I want to
