Patreon dot Great Detectives dot net.Well, now it is time for this
week's episode of Dangerous Assignment. Theoriginal air date January the twenty seventh,
nineteen fifty one, and the titleis A Box of Busted Bells. Dangerous
(01:44):
assignlent sorring Brian Donloty as Steve Mitchell. Yeah, danger is my assignment.
(02:08):
I get sent to a lot ofplaces I can't even pronounce. They all
spell the same thing though, trouble. But when I walk into the Commissioner's
office. I don't realize that thisassignment's going to involve my trying to prevent
a revolution with just one weapon,a box of busted bells. Morning,
(02:30):
Commissioner Reil said, you had anassignment for me to do. Steve,
take a look at this map forthe Middle East. Oh, I might
have known what I read the newspaperstoo. So they're having a little trouble
in one of the countries over there. Right away I get elected, I
suppose you do. And it's morethan a little trouble. How much you
know about it, only that it'ssome kind of a scandal involving one of
the bright young boys in their government, an ex lawyer named Khatou Khatouf is
(02:52):
the leader of the majority party there, and as such he is in effect
the strongest voice in the government.Wait a minute, seems to me,
I remember he was accused of treason, yes, by a minor official named
Mattala. Shortly after Mattalah made hisaccusation, he disappeared. Blood stains were
found in his house. The theoryis that Katouf killed him before he could
furnish proof of Katoof's treachery. Soit sounds like katoofs in hot water.
(03:14):
What's that got to do with UScommissioners plenty? You see, Steve Katoof's
government had already consented to sign anagreement permitting the United Nations to establish an
air base in that country. Isee, well, imagine how vital such
a base could be. But aKatoop's party falls from power as a result
of this scandal, the control ofthe government is liable to fall into the
hands of a highly organized minority partywho undoubtedly would like to prevent the agreement
(03:36):
concerning the air base. From whereI said, it looks like a real
sweet mess. But look, Commissioner, one thing I don't get you say
this. Matalah disappeared right after heaccused Khatoof of treason. That's right.
Has his body been found? No? Well, then how can they whold
Katoo. If you can't convict aman of murder unless you produced the dead
body of his victim, they don'thave to convict Katoof. Steve. The
mere fact of Matalah's disappearance under thoseparticular circum stances is enough to discredit him.
(04:01):
And that's what I think they're afteryou see there's an election coming up
next week. You know, theway you're talking, Commissioner, sounds like
you figured this whole deal is aframe. Get over there, Steve talker
cut to try to find out whatreally happened to Metallic or anywhere and do
anything you have to to get tothe bottom of this whole rotten mess.
Well, that's it, You've gotyour assignment. Good luck. The National
(04:35):
Broadcasting Company is presenting Dangerous Assignment, starring Brian Dunlevy as Steve Mitchell, colorful
two fisted government agent. At allthose places of the world where danger and
infrigue walk hand in hand, thereyou will find Steve Mitchell on another dangerous
assignment. Ar I've got my assignment, just a simple matter of sticking my
(05:01):
nose into a nasty political mess inthe Middle East to try to prove the
Kato's been framed, all of whichgives me an uneasy highstead of he has
the same person who's out to killhim off politically, will be trying his
best to do likewise to me.Literally, Well, it's Tuesday when my
plane lands in the capital of theMiddle Eastern country. I learned the Katou
within a session of the Legislature. So I wait outside in the hall,
(05:24):
and from the sound of it,it's a pretty stormy session. Finally it
breaks up and they start straggling out. It looks bad, General, our
entire party is being discredited because ofthis lie about me. We must not
give up, Hope, Katoo. We will go on fighting it as we
have done. Excuse me, areyou Kato? Yes? Yes, who
(05:45):
are you? I'm Steve Mitchell fromthe States. Oh. Yes, I
have been expecting, Hugh Mitchell.Allow me to introduce General Abba. General,
I am honored, mister Mitchell. Are you not going to introduce me
to your friend Kato? This isHassan, leader of the minority party.
Mister Mitchell, Oh, minority todaynext week? Who can say that is
(06:06):
a matter to be decided by apopular election? Hassan, You are quite
right, General Abba, but thereis little doubt of the outcome when the
leader of the majority party is obviouslyguilty of treason. That is a lie,
Hassard. My record is completely clear. On the contrary, my dear
Katuf, I would say that atthis point your record looks extremely dubious and
no amount of middling by your friendfrom the United States will clear it.
(06:30):
Okays, and I'm just here.Oh, it is quite clear why you
are here, mister Mitchell, towhitewash Katuf. But unfortunately your mission is
doomed to failure. Hasant. Youyou are please, You really should watch
your temper. And now if youwill excuse me, gentlemen, now there
(06:53):
is a real keen kid. Unfortunatelyhe is making political capital of the situation.
Mitchell. Yeah, I can seethat, look cutof you. Better
give me all the background you canon this deal. The background is one
of six years of dreams, hopesand ideals going up in smoke. Mitchell.
Do you mean it was General Abbahere who sponsored my career in politics?
Mitchell? Remember how ignorant I was, General, But you have made
(07:16):
great progress. Yes, with thesupport of our party, I have brought
our country a long way toward democracy. And now to see all of that
go by the board, it isa bitter thing. Yeah. Look as
I got a cutto if you wereaccused of treason by a minor government official
named Mattawa. Yes, yes,and it is very ironic that I should
be accused of treason after all theovertures that have been made to me in
(07:39):
the past year, overtures which Ialways immediately refused. What kind of overtures
do you mean? Their proposals madeunder cover proposals that I would find it
extremely beneficial financially to sell out mypack. Who was making these proposals I
could never find out who was behindhim. Naturally, I would not listen
to any of them. And thenwhen this Mattala brought his absurd charge of
(08:01):
treason against me, I concluded thiswas the next step in the plan.
If they could not buy me out, they would discredit it. It could
figure that way, all right, but it's going to be pretty tough to
prove the whole deal is a frame. I do not think. So,
what do you mean? I amnot completely without friends, both in my
own and other countries. It wasreported to me this morning that the man
(08:22):
entering Mattala's general description was seen inCairo, Egypt, two days ago.
What Katuf I did not know this, No, general, I did not
wish to arouse your hopes until therumor could be investigated. Well, I
guess I'm the boy to investigated Cairo. Uh. Yes, Mitchell, if
you can find this man, perhapsif you were to offer him money,
he would return and clear katuf Ipersonally am willing to pledge any necessary amount.
(08:45):
Yeah, as he sold out once, he probably could be taught into
selling out again. But that's thetrouble right now. How do you mean
sooner or later, whoever hired themis going to realize that they'll figure out
that they don't want him running aroundLuis. Yes, that means they will
be trying to find him, alsoto kill him. Yeah, it also
means i'd better be heading for Cairoin a hurry. I grabbed the next
(09:09):
plain to Carol and check in atthe hotel, and then I head for
the street bazaar. Pretty soon Ifind the place I'm looking for, the
Shop of a Thousand Bells. Justas I get there, a bunch of
native kids come charging past and takea swipe at the bells with a long
stick. The proprietor tears out andshakes a skinny fist at them. Little
far Variant. If I ever catchyou, I McCann will person will show
(09:33):
you how it feels to be jangledwith a stick. I will well,
well, well, good afternoon,a Farandi. Would you perhaps like to
purchase one of my fine bellots? What's the matter? Miccan. Don't you
recognize an old buddy? Ah,Steve Mitchell, it has been so wrong
since these innocent old eyes have restedupon your innocent old eyes. How are
(09:56):
you old pirate eyes? You seizethe still struggling to make a poor but
honest living in the face of manydifficulties. Rather, you haven't changed a
bit, poor but honest. You'veprobably got more piastres tucked away in your
sock on the bank of Egypt. And three years ago I had to buy
you a dictionary to show you whatthe word honest meant. Ah, it's
(10:16):
perhaps just as well. I donot see you very often, Steve.
You are very damaging to my reputation. But then how may I serve you.
I think there's a guy named Matalahiding here in Cairo. I've written
down his description. I want youto find them. I see you realize,
of course that this is a verydifficult thing. Yeah, I also
(10:39):
realize that you and your ten thousandcousins and nephews can find him if he's
here, and if there is,of course, the consideration of expense.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Iknow, how much. Let us not
think in terms of anything so crudeas money, Steve, let us rather
appreciate the beauty of my Oh no, not bad again. This bell,
(11:03):
for instance, it is not beautiful. Ha ha such tone. Well,
not too bad considering it's got acrack in it half an inch wide.
Look, the last time I wantedsome information from you, I had to
buy every cracked bell in You're ashot. Now, don't tell you would
not believe it's Steve, how muchbreakage is involved in this business? Since
(11:24):
I last saw you, I musthave accumulated at least one hundred more cracked
bells, and for some reason theyseem to gain in value. I would
say they are worse. We're worthat least fifty piastres each fifty Why you
will? Well, okay, okay, create them up and send them over
to my hotel. But you'd betterfind Mattallari. You're gonna get them all
(11:46):
back fast. Yeah came here.Yeah, you would not believe it,
Steve. But since you left myhumble shop three hours ago, I have
(12:09):
found at least twenty more cracked bells, which you're de blected to include in
your first order. Oh look,I'm not buying any more busted bells until
you, Steve. I forgot toadd that I have also found this Matala.
What yes, my third cousin twiceremoved located him. It appears he
(12:30):
has dyed his hair and shaved offhis being, but we are certainly it
is the man. You'll see good? Where is he? The bell?
St Okay, okay, Send therest of them over. I'll have enough
cracked bells to put Liberty Hall outof business. Now where's Mattala? You
will find him at number twenty threehas the Kiel Road. It's after dark
(12:56):
when I get to the address McCannhas given me. It's a large house
in the Foreign residential district. Igo up to the front door, but
just as I'm about to ring thebell, the blast knocks me flat on
my back. It looks like thewhole house is going to cave in.
I get back on my feet, still groggy, and shoved my way inside
through the wreckage. The place isfilled with smoke and plans, and then
(13:18):
I spot a body on the floor. I started dragging him out, and
smoke's getting too much for me findingI make it outside with him. A
crowd is gathered by this time, and I put the body down and starts
there weaving back and forth, tryingto keep from passing out. Then a
girl runs up to the body andstares down at it, and all of
a sudden, the sidewalk comes upat me fast. I've had it,
(13:46):
Mitchell, Mitchell, Mitchell, whoare you tinning gliph of the Caido Police.
How did you know my name?He examine your credentials while you were
unconscious of what type? And hey, it looks like somebody beat me to
Mattella. Must have been a timebomb. Matta. Yeah, the boy
I'm after, I should say itwas after he's lying right over there.
(14:09):
No, I'm afraid to have madea mistake. Mitchell, steake, what
do you mean the dead man?He is not this Mattella? You seek?
Why? Well, then who ishe? He was well known to
the kid of police, a commonhouse thief named Ardisium. You're listening to
(14:37):
Dangerous Assignments starring Brian barn Levy asSteve Mitchell. Well this is just great.
I bust my back trying to findMattal and end up by walking into
a booby trap to pull out thewrong body. Then I remember the girl
(14:58):
who identified the body as Mattala, and I'm suddenly very interested in why she
lied about it. I look aroundthe crowd, but she's gone. Then
I spot a taxi sitting at thecurb. I go over to it A
good evening. If my cab cantake you to any part of Kyroeu desaction,
kindly step into No thanks. Idon't want transportation, I want information.
I'll look Cabby. I'm in ahurry. I am CD. I'm
(15:18):
still in a hurry. What Iwant to know is did you see a
girl slip out of the crowd acouple of minutes ago? Leanna? You
know her? Almost everyone in tarnis leannady? Such a dance? She
says? You would not believe it. Do you happen to know where she
does this dance? Of course?Okay said, as you just bought yourself
a passenger. Let's go here isthe cloud with Leanna dances offendy? Okay,
(15:52):
mine one moment. Please just puttingthe car keys in my pocket.
You see I have two cabs stillin Fremi before I learned not to leave
the keys in them. Hey,this place looks like a real hole in
the wall, one of the veryfinest descending. Oh brother, you've been
cut this air with a two byfour. Shall we take a table so
(16:15):
that you may buy me a drink? And yeah, I guess we might
as well, said hello, deepbeautiful Lena. Hey, looks like we're
just in time, said is now, look when Leanna finishes her dance,
I want you to how can shefinish it if she will not come out
and start it? Yeah? Whereis she? No? Didn't do?
(16:38):
Then she still does not make herentrance? If indie, wait a minute,
she got a spotted me from behindthat curtain to come on, but
now where are we doing outside?Sure? Now we are outside. I
(17:00):
still do not see why we're goingto circle around to the alley and wait,
there's a car coming out of thealley. It's the Come on into
your cab. I've got to findout where she's going. Come on,
come on, come on, offishthose keys out of your pocket and get
this bucket of boats going there? You were hurry up? Well, okay,
(17:21):
let's listen. If Andy, mayI observe that all this fast driving
will put a great strain on myengine cab, much more so than the
regular affair will take care of.Okay, okay, so you're on salary.
Looks like I'm gonna need a studydriver for a while. Anyway that
suits me to a w T.No, thank you, I prefer coffee.
(17:47):
That is a joke I always sayfor the tourists. It works every
time. Yeah, bet now, quit making with a joke and start making
with that gas pedal. You betterstop your cab here said this. She
(18:07):
just turned into that pier ahead.Yes, she's parking her car out on
the pier. Yeah, she's headingfor one of those houseboats. Looked like,
what is It's funny. She didn'tseem to be trying to shake us.
Maybe she did not realize you werefollowing men. May not, but
I think I'll make sure she doesn'tgive me the slip again. You wait
(18:27):
here for me. I go intoa little restaurant near the pier and telephone
me kind of the shop and arrangedto buy another shipment of cracked bells from
him. After my call, Iwait about fifteen minutes. Then I head
for the houseboat on the pier.I go up the gang plank, but
(18:48):
just as I step on the deck, I get a sudden chill. Funny,
how cold a gun barrel in yourneck? Fields get inside? All
right? You hurt me? Inside. Okay, Leanna, much COSI you're
in here. Anyway you it willnot be so cozy. Where is your
boyfriend Mattella? Ah? Yes,he would like very much to know that,
(19:11):
would you not? Yeah? Iwould. I'd like to talk to
him, talk to him. Youwish to shoot him, but I will
shoot you instead. Oh, Luckily, Anna, you've got the wrong party.
I'm not the boy who rigged thattime bomb. I want to make
a deal with Mattala, And becauseof that attempt on his life, I
think he's probably ready to talk turkeyright now? Where is he? That
is something you will never know, because right now you are going to die
(19:38):
than to Sorry. Thanks for thetimely entrance. When I observed her forcing
you into the cabinet to point itagain, it occurred to me that here
was an opportunity to increase my valueto you, and of course my price.
Of course. Now, Luckily Anna, your boyfriend Mattala was hired to
bring a phony charge of treason againsta political figure named Katuf in a country
(20:00):
east of here. He was alsohired to disappear and make it look like
Katou killed him. No, thatis not true. Save the innocent routine.
I want to talk to Mattala andfind out who hired him. He
will never tell you. I thinkhe will because whoever did hire him realizes
now that he doesn't want Mattala aliveanymore. He tried to get him at
that time bomb. Next time heprobably won't miss him. Mattala is liable
(20:21):
to wind up dead unless he makesa deal with me. What is this
deal. I'll give him protection ifhe'll tell me who it was and come
back to his own country with meto clear Katou. I see very well,
mister Mitchell, I will go toMattala with your proposal. Let me
go with you. No, youmust white here. I will bring his
answer to you in one hour,it might. I make an observation as
(20:52):
Andy Citzen. Two hours have nowpassed and there is no sign of her.
Obviously she has no intention of yourenny. I guess you're right said.
This looks like I'm pretty stupid, doesn't it. What good will it
do you to wait here in thehouseboat. I don't think I'll have to
wait any longer. Come on outon the deck A small truck and the
(21:14):
pier mitsche you think she has returnedafter all? No, I don't think
that's Leona. Mccon escan word,Leona go. When she left this houseboat,
I followed her to a small hotelout of the city away. You
arranged with this man to follow Leanna. I telephoned him before I came aboard
the houseboat. Leona made no attemptto shake us on the way here,
(21:34):
and that made me figure she wouldn'tbe leading a straight to Mattala. So
I arranged with maccan to take overfor me. And all the things I
was thinking about you sometime I learnedto keep my mouth shut it. Indeed,
you're lead the way in your truck, maccan, we'll follow in the
cab. It must be the hotel. Me can ment it thendy. He
(22:03):
stopped his truck in tone. Yeah, that's the place, mcan. Yes,
you wait here in the platform,he said. Then will there be
violent? Could be? Then Iwill be happy to wait. Set in
the cab. It shoots me toa w Come on the con you find
out which room she went to.No, but as you see, it
is a small hotel. You shouldnot have much difficulty in locating the room.
(22:25):
It really isn't a small hotel, not even a desk clerk. Well,
we'll check the rooms downstairs first,Steve, look at the head of
the style. Ya, come onthe con We pound up the stairs.
Leanna tries to block our way,but we shall past the Matala makes the
fire escape and helps for the room. We follow. Halfway across the Roofie
(22:45):
turns and throws a shot at us. Watch out, Steve, Yeah,
I can't shoot back. I wantto take him alive. Look. Look,
he's heading for the fire escape onthe other side of the roof.
We found after him, but justas we get to the fire usc Oh,
he is shooting at us again. No, that shot wasn't it us.
Look down there, it is Matalalying in the alley. We climbed
down the fire escape to the ground, but Mattala is dead. We grabbed
his body and start carrying it outon the front. It is very heavy.
(23:08):
Steve, hurry it up, mccan. I want to get his body
out of sight. Oh, Steve, I do not understand. I did
not shoot Mattala. You did notshoot them, but Tea's day. Leona
could have done it. But ifshe was about to double cross Matala,
I don't know why she should havewaited until now there's a cab. Let's
get the body in Wait a minute, of course, he is not behind
the wheel. Hey, what areyou doing down there on the floor.
(23:32):
When I heard all this shooting,I decided that down on the floor would
be the best place for me tosee this. Okay, dump the body
in the back, mcconna very well, Claire, Look we gotta get out
of sight for a little while. There's a deserted warehouse around the corner.
I would lead the way in mytruck. Okay, go to it.
Come on, said this, Getthis baby cranked up and follow mccon verywhere
(23:52):
here, keys, hurry it up? Well you started. I do not
understand all this. Look, I'msure that whoever pluck Matala is still around
here someplace, and I'd like toget this body away from me. Here
turn here. Look look, letmust be the warehouse Nkan has already driven.
(24:17):
Okay, what are you going todo now, Steve. Here's the
way it adds up. So far. I didn't get Matala alive, but
his dead body is still enough toclear katoof of his murder if I can
get to the police station in Cairowith it. I do not understand how
producing a dead body clears anyone ofmurder. Look, we know Matala is
killed a few minutes ago here inKiro. That means cottof couldn't have killed
(24:37):
him last week in another country, doesn't it. Oh, but the call
we can get the body to thepolice station. I'm okay, But that's
the hitch. Whoever bumped off Matalawill be trying to prevent that, So
we'll have to work a switch.Switch. What is you got any tarpaulins
in that truck of here's mcan hey, Yes, Steve good. We rig
up a dummy and covered with atarp and you're a truck. You take
(24:57):
off from the warehouse and go whereyou want to. We'll leave the body
in the cab and after we've givenyou a few minutes head start, citizen.
I will head in the town forthe police station. No, I
understand, Mican will lead your enemieson what you cook the wild goose chase.
Yes, you go one outside thewarehouse and keep watch while mccon and
I rig up the dummy. Ifyou see anyone, let out a yell
and make sure we hear it.Do not worry. If andy such a
(25:19):
yell, I will let out willcause the sphinx himself to turn his head
in our direction. Cedis goes outsideand Nicon and I make the necessary arrangements
with the dummy. I fill himin on exactly what is to do when
(25:40):
he takes off. Cedis comes backinside and I wait a few minutes and
then pull out of the warehouse inthe cab and start heading to the city.
If Andy, I cannot say,I care to be carrying a dead
man in the back seat of mycat out of body, I said us.
You don't even have to look athim mccon and I pull a tarp
over him even so, I don'tsay. We're on the outskirts of the
city. Now is following us either? Well? So far? So god?
(26:03):
Hey, why'd you turn off themain road? It is short to
this way of tending You sure itquite you? Hey, look, this
isn't the police station. It's justa big house exactly, and we are
going inside. Hey, why isthe gun? Get out? So you're
my boy, citizen? Okay, yes, I should have figured it.
(26:26):
You're a boy who planted that timebomb exactly. I waited in my cab
outside to see whether I would besuccessful. Then when you realize that you'd
missed and I was after Matala too. You figured to spring along with me
and let me leave you to him, muh, which you did it inside.
(26:47):
Well, what happens now? Thatis not for me to say.
It is uptima supply, General Abbasit you fool to bring Mitchell here?
Well cut too. Closest friend andpolitical sponsor turns out to be the big
boy in this deal. I hadno choice, General, Well, I
guess it all figures. I remembercart Of telling me how ignorant he was
(27:08):
when you gave him his start inpolitics. You were figuring on making a
puppet out of him, but hestarted getting ideas of his own, didn't
They too many of them, Soyou made undercover overtures to sell him out,
and he wouldn't. Then you riggedthis frame to discredit him. It
would have worked if it had notbeen for these blundering fools you around.
General, It will still work.I killed Matara and Mitchell was trying to
(27:30):
get his Boddy to the police station. But if that Boddy does not get
the this is vision against still stands, does it not? What are you
trying to say? It's simply thatthe body is now in the back of
my cab. Outside. You knowI got a nasty surprise for you two
kids. What do you mean Mattala'sbody isn't in the cab? You're lying,
(27:52):
am I. You were outside thewarehouse on watch when mccon and I
rigged the dummy. Remember we putthe dummy in the cab and the body
in mccan's truck. I'm sure it'ssafe at police headquarters. By this time,
you cannot understand. I could havesworn it to see I had you
pegged right after Matala was shot, said, when we brought his body back
to the cab, you had tofish your keys out of your pocket to
get it started. That meant tome that you had been out of your
(28:15):
cab. I remembered you telling meearlier that you always took your keys with
you. I will deal with youlater. Said this. Right now,
we must kill Mitchell and get outof here. You're a little too late,
General Laba. This place is surroundedright now by the Cairo police.
You are bluffing? Are you theguy outside? He must be telling the
truth. I'm getting out of here. Where you are you are the one
who killed Matala? I am inthe clear, Let go of me.
(28:36):
I am getting out of here.Said this. Pulls away from the general
Lava and dive for the window.Abba jokes a gun out of his pocket
and let's sit. This happen inthe back. I die for robber.
He swings his gun towards me.But it's too late. Oh, shooting,
shooting. Every time I'm with you, Steve, there is shooting,
(28:56):
and it looks like it's all overnow. Did as you instructed me?
Followed you and Citi is here. You're almost too late? What kept you?
Will you see, Steve? Ihave to stop off at my shop
to break out. I mean tosee how many broken bells I could find.
Yeah, you probably were right thefirst time you and you're a hammer.
Well you will be interested in knowingI just passed you off as the
(29:18):
Cairo Police Force. You what, yeah, yeah, I know. It
must be quite a shock, oh, Steve. It puts a severe strain
upon our friendship. Well, don'tworry. You'll build me for it.
Or maybe I should say bell mefor it. Dangerous Assignment, starring Brian
(30:19):
don Levy as Steve Mitchell, iswritten by Bob Rythe and Adrian Jando and
music by Robert arm Brewster and isproduced and directed by Bill carne be with
us next week at this same time, when Brian don Levy, starring in
the role of Steve Mitchell, willembark on another dangerous assignment. Dangerous Assignment
(30:48):
came to you from Hollywood. Nowit's the man called X. Tomorrow Here
Danny Kay on The Big Show onNBC, Welcome back. How technically this
guy is going to make Steve takehis inventory. He doesn't need to break
(31:10):
it first, But some people makerules for their scams and are committed to
it. This was a fine episode. It was interesting in that the political
intrigue that the episode centered around ownedwas set in a fictional country which they
avoid naming. They get to havethe action set in a real world location.
(31:34):
You know, there are things thatyou assume that you don't know that
you've assumed them until you hear someonesay something else. And that was the
case where Steve was treating the cabbytaking his keys when he left the cab
(31:55):
as a clue. And my mentalresponse was doesn't everybody how they do that?
And the answer obviously is no,not everyone does that. Oh,
certainly you live in most urban areasin the United States. If you don't
take the keys out of your car, unless you've got some major other security
(32:17):
measure, you're not going to havea car when you get back. Oh,
that's a habit that developed over time. I think as car thefts rose,
it became a habit. But ifwe really did have the option to
be fairly confident that our car wouldbe there when we got back, if
we left the key, it couldbe a pretty appealing option. Mostly I
(32:43):
found ways to deal with having mykeys with me when I go out,
say on a long walk. Itcan have some inconveniences. These can poke
holes in things while you're walking overa long period of time, or you
can also have a situation where theyflop out, which puts you in a
(33:06):
whole other world of hurt. However, most of us are so conditioned to
take our keys with us that it'skind of unthinkable to leave them in in
our cars, although I will saythat there are still many rural parts of
the United States where that is stillthe practice. Was reading up some fairly
(33:29):
recent online posts that said, yeah, people still do that in these rural
areas. One lady actually was tellingthat she moved to a rural area where
everybody left their keys in the car, and somebody had seen that she had
left her window cracked and had startedto rain, and they wanted to get
(33:51):
into the car to roll the windowup the rest of the way so it
didn't ruin her interior, but theycouldn't get into our car, and so
they told her about that, andthey were kind of like, why would
you take your keys with you? Now, I will say that I did
spend some years growing up in ruralareas, but we never did the leaving
(34:13):
the door unlocked thing. My dadhad lived in Spokane and larger cities,
and he had habits and ways hedid things. In fact, one of
my earliest memories, like I wasthree or four of us having to call
the sheriff because one of my parentshad locked the key in the car.
(34:37):
Reading about this makes me wonder whetherthe sheriff was thinking to himself, Oh,
city folk. Now it's time tothank our Patreon supporter of the day,
and I want to go ahead andthank Katherine. Katherine has been one
of our Patreon supporters since August oftwenty twenty one, currently supporting the show
(34:59):
at the shameless level of four dollarsor more per month. Thank you so
much for your support, Katherine, and that will actually do it for today.

I want to call him at ina moment or so. Anything interesting
in the mod No, just theusual stuff. Oh except this. It
(35:42):
came in the mad yesterday. Whatis it? It's a key, Vans,
a golden key. Nothing came withit, no letter, nothing at
all, Just a golden key inan envelope addressed to you. Unusual but
not particularly interesting. Will you getmister Markham for me. I'll be in
my private office, I certainly will. Your office might be the gust.
Come here. What is it?What's the matter? Oh, nothing very
(36:07):
