for your support, James. Andnow it is time for this week's episode
of Dangerous Assignment. The original airdate March the thirty first, nineteen fifty
one, and the title is AtomicFishing Formula Dangerous assignment. Sorry, Brian

(02:00):
don Levey as Steve Mitchell, Yeah, danger is my assignment. I get

(02:22):
sent to a lot of places Ican't even pronounce. They all spell the
same thing, though, trouble. But when I walk into the Commissioner's office,
I don't realize this assignment's going tofind me trying my level best to
make a perfect target out of myself. Good morning, Commissioner, Ruth said,

(02:44):
you wanted to see me, Ido, Steve. You can stop
this assignment by painting a nice bigbullseye on your chest. All fine,
what's the deal? Flying a jobat a Look for a little piece of
paper? Brother? The paper, shortis must be worse than I thought.
This is no ordinary piece of paper, Steve. It contains a new formula
for a Tommy fishing stolen from thiscountry, right, No, what makes
you think it's in Java? Thenight before last the man was killed in

(03:05):
Java. The authorities there found halfthe formula on his body. What do
you mean half of it? Theformula is in two parts. Steve,
whoever stolen didn't realize that and onlygot half. He probably figured on making
a fortune out of it on theopen market. But he must realize by
now that one half is worth whistledout the other. In that case,
you'll probably try and get that otherhalf. Exactly where is it? In
the custody of a British intelligence agentnamed Snell? And so to buy your

(03:28):
Java. But I still don't seewhere I fit in. Hey, wait
a minute, what's that routine youare giving me about painting a bull's eye
on my chest? You ought togo to Java openly, Steve, get
an envelope from Snell and then returnand in that envelope is the other half
of the formula. No, we'renot taking any chances. In that envelope
will be a blank piece of paper, But we want whoever's interested to think

(03:49):
it's the formula. Oh well, you don't want to take any chances,
eh, Just with my life standsthe reason of whoever has the missing half
will come after you. It alsostands to reason that doing a thing like
this I could get killed. I'mnot going to minimize the dangerous Steve.
From the moment you leave Snilfausen Java, you're a marked man. But this
is the quickest way to smoke theopposition out into the open. We've got

(04:10):
to get that missing half back. He's a half back, well, quarterback,
full back, a nickelback on yourbottle. Oh well, that's it.
You've got your assignment. Good luck. The National Broadcasting Company is presenting

(04:34):
Dangerous Assignments, starring Brian don Levyand the role of Steve Mitchell, colorful
two fisted government agent. All thoseplaces of the world where danger an intrigue
walk hand in hand, there youwill find Steve Mitchell and another dangerous assignment.

(04:56):
Well. I've had a lot ofscrewball assignments in my time, but
I never thought to see the daywhen I'd be sending some guy a cordial
invitation to kill me. It's Wednesday, when my plane lands in Java,
just as it's starting the rain.I fully expect to see some joker with
a knife lurking in the shadows atthe airport, but no one shows up.
I take a cab to Snell's houseand no one answers my knock.
So I try the door. It'sunlocked. I shove it open. Inside

(05:19):
a little beady eyed gent it's justslipping a long, murderous looking pair of
scissors into a little black bag.Good evening. Oh I thought the joint
was deserted. Didn't you hear meknock? Oh? Yeah, oh I
didn't you open the door? BecauseI will be extremely discourteous what you see.
I'm not the one who lives you, mister Snell. He's the one

(05:41):
who lives here. I know that. Where is he? He's baby?
Please to make yourself at home andmix for yourself a drink. Wait a
minute, you don't feel right aboutanswering the door, But to tell me
to make myself right at home,it is what missus Snell would want you
to do. No, if youreally excuse me, where you going?
I must leave. I'm finished here, completely finished. And when one's work's

(06:04):
time, one leaves. Good evening. So I makes myself a drink and
wait for Snell, and I startthinking about the little gent with the scissors.
The minutes dragged by, and theshower is still running in the bathroom.
I start getting fidgety. Then ithits me. The little guy had

(06:25):
said his work was done here.He could have meant snow. I run
to the bathroom, jerked the showercurtain. I say, oh here,
okay, Well, I was atlast report, old boy, but isn't
it a bit thick charging into aman's bathroom like this? Sorry, I
got a little worried about you.Nicer, you'd been concerned, old man,
But I assure you I have beentaking showers most of my adult life

(06:47):
and never had a moment's trouble.Who are you anywhere? Steve Mitchell from
the States? Oh Mitchell, ofcourse, hand me that towel, will
you, old boy? Oh sure, thanks, Yes, I've been expecting
you, mture, But it's allabout job being worried about me. Yes,

(07:08):
this deal's getting on my nerves already. A strange little character in your
living room gave me some double talkand left. Oh that was Kella,
my Taylor. Taylor. Well thatexplains the scissors, all right, A
ripping good one too. I wasbeginning to wonder whether he'd been doing a
little ripping on you. I say, this thing is getting on your nerves,
isn't it. I want to tradejobs. Thanks a lot, old

(07:30):
boy, but I think this isone adventure i'll cheerfully forego. Now,
if you'll be so kind as tohand in my robe? Oh here here
the thanks. Now, as Iunderstand it when you leave here, you
ought to take the change to Bataviaat the other end of the island.
That's news to me. How comeslippers slippers? Old boy? Oh yeah,

(07:50):
well I suppose it will give whoever'safter you more a chance at you.
Well, couple long into the nextroom. The envelopes in my day.
Okay, here you are, oldboy, just a blank piece of
paper in an envelope, and forthis I get shot at. Well.
Thanks, now I'll be on myway right. Oh, just one thing,

(08:13):
I think you understand. You arenot to go skulking down back allows,
Now, what do you mean? The point is you are to make
it as easy as humely possible forwhoever wants to take a shot at you.
So, with this cheerful bit ofadvice ringing in my ear like a
funeral bell, I leave Snow's placeand start walking down the street. Already

(08:35):
the deal is gotten on my nerves, and I'm hoping that whatever happens,
it happens soon. I come toa street bazaar, and, remembering Snow's
advice to make myself conspicuous, Istart browsing around. Pretty soon I spot
the girls. Yeah, it's justthe time you'll see in a dead beat
movie Dark and Slink or an agentwritten all over I go away? Will
you? The girl studiously ignoring me? So I figured it's only a question

(09:00):
time before she makes her pitch. Then the routine will probably go as following.
We'll have a drink somewhere, thenwe'll go to her apartment. Then
she pulls a gun on me.So the only question in my mind now
is how do we get introduced?Does she bump into mer or does she
drop her purse? And I'm rightthe first time? Whoop? Pardon me?
Oh no, it was my fault. I was not looking where I

(09:20):
was going. I'm spiker. Thinkit's for your very clumsy mister Steve Mitchell.
See I am Tanya, But hewrites about now I should ask you
if you'd like a drink, Tanyaright. As a matter of fact,
I'd love one. The evening isso warm. Is there a bar near
here? I suppose just down thestreet. Quite a happy coincidence. Let's

(09:43):
go. You know it is funny, Steve one drink you and I see
we've known each other for a longlong time. But that's the way it

(10:05):
is with me. I make outmy mind quickly about people. You were
perhaps surprised when I accepted your invitationfor a drink so quickly. Well,
no, I can't say I wassurprised, Daniel. What do you mean,
Steeve, Like you said, that'sa warm evening. Oh, yes,
tell me about yourself, stee Whatare you doing here in Java?

(10:28):
First fishing trip? You might say? How about you? Oh, I'm
afraid I could not tell you that. I always find it hard to explain
the reasons which lead me from onepart of the world to another. Perhaps
it is that I like to bewhere there is color and excitement I see
and people to drink with on warmevening. Yeah, particularly that, Steve.
You know, I'm glad I'm inJava tonight. But speaking of warm

(10:54):
evenings, it is getting a littlestuffy in here, isn't it. Yeah,
I thought you'd begin to notice thatyou've got the ideas well. You
don't happen to have an apartment nearhere, do you? Why, Steve,
you're positively psychic. Yeah, I'ma whiz when you take me home,
Steve, of course you sound quiteeager to Well, you might say,

(11:15):
I've been waiting for this moment allevening. Come on, this is
where I live, Steve. Ohokay, here's the key. Would you
unlock the door for me? Sure? Sure, there you are. Thank

(11:37):
you, and thank you for thelovely evening, Steve. I'd ask you
in that. I'm afraid it's alittle late. Huh, but perhaps you
will call me one day soon.Wait a minute, you mean you're not
going to invite me in? ButI just told you it it's rather late.
Yeah, so he said, goodnight, Steve. Just about the

(12:01):
time I think I've got the wholedeal figured out, Tanya pulls the big
switch on me. I head backto my hotel and now I'm more in
the dark than ever. Maybe Tanyaisn't the one after all, or maybe
she's just playing it slow and smart. Then next morning, I go down
to the station and get on thetrain to Behavia, and even before it
pulls out, I know I'm notgoing to be traveling alone. I see,

(12:22):
Well, hello, Tanya, whata coincidence? Yeah? What's the
full of them? But to findyou on the train to Petavia when I
only decided to go this morning.May I sit with you? Sure?
Now? Don't tell me you're notsurprised to see me here on the train.
Okay, I won't. You're stillon your fishing trip, yep,
I take it you're still looking forcolor and excitement, of course, Ah

(12:46):
Tanya, my dear, Oh helloEnrique, I'm indeed fortunate to find I
will have such delightful company on thetrip to Batavia. I am sorry,
but as you see, Enrique,I already have a traveling companion. It's
my loss, but your game, said Mitchell, I am Chaves. I

(13:07):
congratulate you, Oh, thank youwhat for for your excellent taste, for
your admiration of beauty? I tooclaim these virtues. Okay, So we're
a couple of virtuous kids. Perhapsif we were to talk further, we
might discover additional things in common.Perhaps if you were to go further down
the aisle and you might uncover avacancy or the aluftania. But I am

(13:31):
a man of great patience, mydear, I can wait. I will
undoubtedly see you later, both ofyou. Nice guy. I cannot stand
him. I cannot seem to getaway from him. Everywhere Ago he follows
me some hobby. Look at him, sitting there leering at me. What's
the matter, Stephen, that littleman. We're sitting next to Chavis.

(13:56):
Oh, I mean reading the newspaper. Yes, what about him? Do
you know him? No? Why, he seems to be very interested in
you. I've noticed him several timesstaring over the top of his newspaper at
you. Oh, perhaps he thinkshe recognizes you. Yeah, perhaps he
does. So Now, all ofa sudden, I've got three people to

(14:18):
worry about. Tanya, her loyalfan, Chavis, who's routine with her
It could have been staged for mybenefit. And the little gentle was playing
peekaboo with me from behind his newspaper. Any one of them could be after
that slip of paper in my pocket. The question is who, And I
know that's one question I've got toanswer before one of them politely arranges for
me to drop dead. The hoursdragged by, and the train starts winding
through some rugged looking in the junglecountry. Pretty soon I get sleepy and

(14:41):
goes off. I don't know howlong I've been asleep when something brings me
out of it. A hand inmy breast pocket. Hey, oh,
oh, I didn't know you wereraped to you that's obvious. Oh,
you must think I'm a big pocket. I wanted a cigarette and discovered I
was all out, and I thoughtyou were asleep, So I was just
trying to get one yours without disturbingyou. I see, Steve, rightful

(15:05):
shots and the train is stopping.Listen to the hill. Oh great,
heaven must get off the train quickstBut but they will Robert jealous. We
can hide in the jungle. Ohsure, I bet I'll be nice and
safe in the jungle with you.Wonne Oh, Steve, don't just sit
there. Come okay, what's thedifference. Let's go hurry, hurry,

(15:26):
do you the jungles almost stopped. You can jamp Okay, I'll go first.
Okay, come on, all right, Come we get back into the
under crashing and wait for the gorillasto clear out. You know you seem
to be an old hands. OhI've had experience with his gorilla band bandits
be forced. He frequently killed apleasure. Now this ought to be far

(15:48):
enough. You know you didn't seemvery surprised by this raid, don you
What do you mean by that?Nothing? Hold it? What's the matter?
Someone's coming through the brush. Getdown quiet, chatters, well in
your Mitchell and Tanya, my dear, and Ricky, what are you doing

(16:11):
here. I assure you I didnot wish to be in through upon your
privacy, my dear, But Inoticed the two of you slipping off the
train into the jungle and decided itwould be a wise course for me to
follow up. So Woh, thisis nice and cozy, isn't it?
Just the three of us? Undersome circumstances, three is considered the lucky
numbers, Senior Mitchell, Oh,I guess sooner or later I'll find out.

(16:32):
I'm certain you will about the girl, as I still going through the
train. See, I waited untilthey entered the car in front of ours
before I slipped off from their shots. I gathered they were searching for guns
and ammunition, and of course we'repicking up such money and jewelry as they
could from the passengers. Wait aminute, listen, train, he's pulling

(16:52):
away. Come on, see we'vegot to catch the trailers. Kanye,
what happened? Oh, I'm twisted, Ache, I'll help you up,
Thank you? Can you walk?Yeah? I think I will help you.
Oss Harry, never mind, we'retoo late. Here goes the train

(17:14):
around the bend. Were stranded?Oh no, not in this jungle.
At accidents of You're assure happened atthe wrong time, Dania, Or was
it at the right time? Whatare you talking with? H looks like
we're not alone after all. Seetwo other passengers sitting on the tracks over
there. They must have been stranded. Also, Oh, we might as
well go over and get acquainted,Steve. Look, one of those men

(17:37):
is the one who was looking atyou always newspaper. I suppose he's got
stranded accidental light too? Who isthe other man? Search me? Who
passengers in the street? Yeah, you got left find too? Huh,
face simply left low warning. Willoughby'sthe name Peter Willoughby. And this is
Ben Rold he minds Mitchell, thisis Tanya and Chaviz. How do you,

(18:00):
I see, have still got yournewspaper? Van Rault? Yeah,
what about it? Oh maybe itwas just my imagination, but I seem
to notice on the train that youwere more interested in me than your paper.
Sure it was your imagination? Whennear Mitchell? Well, what do
we do now, gentlemen? Isay the first order of business is to
get back to civilization. Marvelous specimenshere and all that, Bob specimens,

(18:22):
rare birds. I'm an ornithologist, old man. Matter of fact, that's
why I was trended. What Ispotted a galas galas through the window and
got off to try for a betterlook. What's a gallas of galas?
Quite a rare red jungle bird?Quite a fall in my calf if I,
oh, I say, that's nota good is it? Bird?
Father of micfare? Yeah? Yeah, hilarious. Well, I think we'd

(18:45):
better spread out and see if wecan spot any villages near here. Suppose
we each try a different direction andmeet back here in half an hour.
That sounds like a sensible plan.Yeah, come along, Chen, what
is it been? Round? Finallyinformation for you? We must range it
time and we can be alone totalk. I see, but no,
no, the others might notice.Yeah, I will see you a little,

(19:07):
Mitchell. So we all fan outin different directions. I go into
the jungle a little way and sitdown on a stump to think things over.
This deal is getting dan deer bythe moment. Now I've got four
people to keep my eyes on.Willoughby, the Birdman, Tanya, Chavis,

(19:29):
and Van Rault. The little Gentwoodsays he's got vital information for me.
Suddenly I realized the jungle has gottenawfully quiet. I get antge between
my shoulder blades like someone's behind me. I whirl around and they're holding a
gun on me? Is Van Ralph? Well, so you're the boy Van
Rault? All right? That vitalinformation you said you had for me?
It wouldn't be a bullet wooded whichI have wound. If one move and

(21:07):
was why you were appointing that gunin my direction. Of course, as
an approach I could see the cobraor siddy a strike. Thanks for the
snake charming acc Now what was thisvital information you've got for me? I
wanted to talk to you about.Wait, yeah, soundlike the others are

I'll meet you and we can talk. Okay, So what's all the shooting

(21:29):

of your spot any villagers? Notthe thing I spotted something village? No
pavo muticas. Oh great? Anotherbird? I suppose mean peacock magnificent specifically

(21:52):
luck right now, we're more interestedin magnificent specimens of people. Well,
I just our best. That isthe all of the railroad tracks. Eventually
we'll get to a town that way. That's Steve did might take day?
You got any better ideas, No, but either of I. So let's
go. So we start track walking, Van Ralts in the lead, Tanya

(22:17):
next, Then comes Chavez and Willoughby, rubber necking at all the birds.
I bring up the rear so Ican keep an eye on all of them.
Towards dark, we find a littleclearing and stop for the night.
I wait until it looks like theothers are all asleep. Then I go
out into the jungle a little wayand wait for Van rawl. At this
point, I don't know whether hispitch about having vital information is just a
trap or not, but I've gotto find out. I sit there a

(22:40):
while, wondering uneasily how many tigersthere are to the square mile in this
neck of the woods, And thenit dawns on me that the jungle has
gotten suddenly quiet again. The screamcomes from my left. I had in
that direction fast, but I don'thave far to go. I round a
tree and there it is in frontof me, on the ground. There's
enough moonlight to tell me who itis, Van Rauld, and he's wearing

(23:02):
an ear to ear grin that wasput there with a knife. Mitchell,
where are you michere? Oh?Chavis? Here? I am ah en
rocked. Yeah, somebody shut hismouth by opening his throat. Incidentally,

(23:26):
you got here fast, didn't you, Chavis? Huh right? I am
a light sleeper, Mitchell. Iheard the scream and I came running.
You sure did? What was thatinternal noise? It wasn't a bird,
Willoughby rot? Oh? Yeah?Who? That's a good question, Kanya.
Perhaps some natives robbed and killed him. No, I don't think so.

(23:48):
Is wallet's right here in his pockets? Well, here's a girl boy.
Well, according to his papers, van Rault was a Dutch intelligent agents
here in Java. That mean anythingto any of you? Why should it?
Mitchell? That's another good question. You want time? You seem to
specialize in them, chattts If Isay, I don't know what this blooming
miss is all about, but onething I do know, we'd better get

(24:11):
out of here, will be beforewe all get killed. I'm for pushing
on the rest of the night. So it's me Willoughby lead the way,
I think. Not. What doyou mean? I can't say I'm anxious
to have any of you three behindme in this jungle, particularly you,
Mitchell. Oh, you're not aboutsuspicion, you know, after all,
we found you standing over Droll's body. Maybe you've got a point there,

(24:32):
Willoughby. Okay, as long asnone of us trusts each other, we'll
walk side by side, just likelittle playmates. Come on, let's get
started. I can't so much partiswhat? Only how about you? Willoughby's

(25:02):
been enough rare birds to last youfor a while. Believe it was not,
old boy, I haven't seen theone. We've been too busy trying
to look over my shoulder, JAVIZII would welcome arrest, Mitchell. I'm
not what one would call the hardcoretime Steve. Look, there's a river
right ahead of them. Yeah, and a little suspension bridge. Come on,

(25:22):
I say, old man, youdon't call this rickety collection of ties
and sticks of bridge? Yo,Well, I had met. It doesn't
compare with a golden gate bridge, but it looks like the only way of
getting across the river. I'd soonerwaited, old boy. Be pretty tough
to do against that current. Yes, it is too sweet, Mitchell.
This area looked familiar to me.What do you mean I visited the Van
Lowe and plantation several years ago.I think it was in this area,

(25:47):
but I'm not sure whether it wasupstream or downstream from here. Perhaps if
some of us were to go inone direction, some in the other,
we might locate it. Now,I think we'd better all stay together.
I'm will you love it ruled.I wouldn't really wandering around this jungle alone.
YEO, there is a path onthe other side of the bridge.
Yeah, it looks like our bestbet. Okay, we'll cross the bridge

(26:08):
one of the time. I'll gofirst. Be careful, seed. Hey,
brother, this thing is about hisstudy as a hula dancer. Start.
Is he holding all right? Yeah? So far? Hey theo the
bridges collect. See, I'm allright. The water is only a waste

(26:30):
deep. They the currents dragging me, Richard, watch up ahead of you.
I can't hold back. Are youhid? My arms? They're waste
into the crack between these rocks.I can't move. I'll clur it off,
Oh man, don't know. Thecurrents too strong. Spread out all

(26:51):
of you. See if you canfind that plantations, bring back some help
and hurry. Go off they go, leaving me huddled against the rock in
the middle of the river, wonderinghow long I'm gonna have to wait.
But as it turns out, Idon't have to wait long at all.
Ten minutes later, a figure stepsout of the underbrush onto the river bank.

(27:12):
It's Willoughby ybar. Yeah, Ican find any help, No concerts
like individuals. That isn't surprising becauseI wasn't looking for any But hey,
why the gun now, isn't itbite all ills? Oh great, so
you're the boy who's after the formulamy blood. I suppose you've got the

(27:33):
other half of it, right, dude in my coat pocket bar? Quite
an act you put on? Willit be the bird lover? Amazing the
things you can find out in anencyclopedia. Oh I don't get plug me
and get it over with. Wedon't think of it. Jock might be
heard by the illas say I gotthe most bitter plan. What do you
mean? I take off my holyleput it on the bay and I sid

(28:00):
me wait out to you get theenvelope out of your pocket? Check you
on the head with my gun?Why you lose electric? Float down street?
Out? Sounds just great? ButI'm taking a chance waiting out in
this current through you are justifies thedays, old boy. Besides, as
you can see, I've tied aleg of vine around a three times.
Yet I'll keep the other end inmy head. That way I can always

(28:22):
get back to the bank if Ilose back with it. Well, that's
nice to know. Well here Ican be careful. I wouldn't want anything
to happen to you. For theworld, old boy, I say,
I must admit you're frightfully, butspoke about all these videos. Oh sure,
the cricket and all land. Let'sgive you a helpless feeling. Puts

(28:45):
there with your arms, coat inthe rocks, washing me clothing mount.
I must admit I can think ofa few thousand places i'd rather be at
the moment. Bill, here,I am ow jolly and just sipped my
hand in your pocket and get thatenvelope if you do mind letting me help
you for your own a plea.Take sure are dropped that gun away down?

(29:06):
Oh that's better. This whole teawas a pen. That's right.
Let's go up me sure lads tooa black store. Oh damn, that's

(29:29):
okay. I can get out withthe help of this van. Willoughby was
kind enough to rig up for me. But I ron are causing the rocks
all right, to send you ona wild goose chase. But I had
to find out who is who,and that seemed like the best way of
doing it. There, What doyou mean, let's see Willoughby said it

Tomorrow, the Big Show's Wonderful. Now It's the Man called X on
NBC Welcome Back. I liked themid episode cliffhanger, although I did suspect

(31:11):
that it was probably going to bea case where there was something coming up
behind Mitchell. The scene where Mitchellpicked up the decoy piece of paper was
interesting in that when the Taylor appeared, you were kind of expecting something sinister.
It happened, and I guess thisshowed that Steve is a bit nervous

(31:36):
about this particular assignment, and Ithink with good reason, and also to
kind of bring a little bit ofgrounding and realism in that not everything is
necessarily an action or a murder scene, that sometimes mundane things do happen,
and also points to my guy inthe shower, who all things considered really

out with YouTube and a comment onthe episode Nazi buzz Bomb, and in
not that episode, I expressed alittle bit of skepticism that given advances in

(32:24):
weapon technology on both sides by nineteenfifty one, that a Nazi buzz bomb
would be you know, even animproved one would be of much concern to
either side, and a listener wrote, let's be honest. Late in the
war, Nazi scientists like Werner vonBraun had several weapons projects in order to

(32:50):
later use them in negotiations with theUnited States. For years after World War
Two, the United States mounted expeditionsto Europe, South America, America,
the Arctic, and yes, evenAfrica, just liking raiders of the Lost
Art looking for Nazi weapons projects becausethe United States in England had basically dosn't
mated German facilities and military manufacturing infrastructurewithin Germany and Austria. Well, I

(33:17):
think guess that is a fair point, and so maybe the applaud of that
episode and the basic foundation, we'rea bit more sure than I thought.
