(02:09):
my assignment. I get sent toa lot of places I can't even pronounce.
They all spell the same thing, though. Trouble but when I walk
into the Commissioner's office, I don'trealize that this assignment's going to wind up
with my catching a war criminal becausea china shop vanishes into thin air.

(02:32):
Morning Commissioner Bill said, you havean assignment for me. I do Steve,
you ever hear of Gugu Schwitzen. No sounds like something you're spread on
rye bread. You're not even close. It's a woman's track team. Hey.
You know, for a moment Ithought you said of just what I
did say. The Google Slights andGirls are an amateur track team who travel
around Europe Gluten Schweitzen. Yet wheredid they ever pick up a handle like

(02:53):
that? Missus Gluten used to bequite a track star herself. She went
over to one of the Olympics fromSaint Paul and as the story go,
she pulled Vallet into the lap ofher future husband, mister Gluten. Oh
and chance. Anyway, she marriedGluten and never came back to the States.
Gluten has a lot of money pretzelsor something, so she started sponsoring
this tracte. So that explains theGluten. Where does the Schweitzen come in?

(03:15):
He's the coach? Oh, Isee well, Commissioner, I think
it's just dandy of you to sendfor me so that you could give me
all this real fascinating information. Butwould you mind telling me what has all
got to do with me? Ifyou think I'm going to challenge any of
those Amazons to a potato race.Steve, I'm sure you remember the name
Carpell, Rudolf Carpell, that's right. One of the most vicious war criminals

(03:36):
there was. His concentration camp wasa nightmare of brutality. Yeah, I
remember, nobody was ever quite surewhether Carpell was dead or alive. Sure
now that he's dead and he's alive. That's where the gluten Schwitzen girls come
in, Stee. One of them, a girl named Martha, saw a
Corpell and Rotterdamn Holland two days ago. Look, Commissioner, we've had a
few similar reports like this in thepast, as I remember, and each

(03:57):
time it turned out to be afalse alarm. You but this girl,
Martha swear she really saw Coppell, and apparently she knows what she's talking about.
Her father and Corpell used to bein business together before the war.
I see, Well, that sortof throws a new light on it.
Is I think we're really on Coppel'strail at last rotterdamn Holland. Yeah.
The group who s fights and girlsare training at a stadium there. Get

(04:19):
over there, Steve, talk tothis moth and talk to missus Gluten,
talk to Spights and if you wantto. But above all, find Rudolph
Cappelle. And I said, you'vegot your assignment. Good luck. The

(04:43):
National Broadcasting Company is presenting Dangerous Assignment, starring Brian Don Levy and the role
of Steve Mitchell, colorful two fistedgovernment agent to all those places of the
world where danger and intrigue walk handin hand. There you will find Steve
Mitchell on another dangerous assignment. Sure, I've got my assignment. Go over

(05:09):
to Holland get a lady track starto put the finger on a war criminal
named Rudolph Carpel, whom we've beenchasing for six years, all of which
gives me an uneasy feeling. Beforethe deal's over, I'll find myself in
a track meet, but somebody willbe putting a shot at my direction with
a gun. It's Tuesday. Whenthe plane lands in Rotterdam, I head
for the stadium and they're in allthe glory are the Gluten Schweitzen girls,

(05:31):
some of them doing calisthenics, otherscharging around the track and out in the
center of the field stands a beefywoman with a sweatshirt and a whistle and
a megaphone, which, with hervoice is strictly excess baggage. Fire fire.
Excuse me, are you Missus Gluten? Yeah? No, no,

(05:54):
Steve Mitchell from the States. Yeah, Oh you mean the girl coming around
the track. Yeah, my fistfour do you know? Yeah? I
introduce you inga bok Jesus, misterMitchell h to make you hi? I
mean hi. Well, that wasundoubtedly the shortest acquaintance on record. She

(06:16):
hasked, good form, dot ingerBall speaking for a form. Who's that
little number over there? Dot isFlida? Very nice? What's her especially
brought jump Annah hips hips? Yeah, she sure has, Missus Gluten.
I came over here to question oneof your girls. Her name is Martha.
Yeah, Hi, yeah, Dotis Martha. The exercise is doing,

(06:39):
Martha, Brother, you take nochances of not being heard, do
you? You should hear me mitthe megaphone. I'm sorry, I asked,
I said, missus. Now thisis Steve Mitchell. He has questions.
Oh yes, mister Mitchell, theytold me to expect you. I
go now, Okay, thanks missusGooden Ginger book let the arms loosely shing,
Martha, I understand that you thinkyou saw a man named Rudolph Carpel

(07:03):
here in Rotterdam. I am positiveof it, mister Mitchell. You see
him. My father used to bein business together, back before the war.
That was fourteen years ago, andI was only a little girl,
but I have always remember his facelike a whizer. Where did you see
him? I was shopping the daybefore yesterday, late in the afternoon,
I reached the china ware shop namedSpears. I went inside and there behind

(07:26):
the counter was Carpell. Did hesee you? I do not know,
but I doubt it. He waswaiting on some other customers at the time.
I see. Okay, Martha,I'd like you to take me to
that shop so I can arrange forCarpell to retire from the china ware business
for keeps. The shop is justa two doors father down the street.

(07:56):
Mister Mitchell, what did you saythe name of the Spears? Okay?
Now, look, all you haveto do is point him out to me
through the window. Then you betterget out of the line of fire.
Just in this is the place.Oh okay, now just hey, wait
a minute, I thought you saida china shop named Spears was supposed to
be here. Yes, that isthe trouble. This is a bigly shop

(08:20):
instead. Look are you sure thisis the right location? But of course
maybe we're on the wrong street. No, mister Mitchell, this is the
place. I'm positive of it.Yeah, well a lot of china where
I got transferred into a lot ofpies all of a sudden. Wait a
minute, how long ago was itthat you saw Carpell did hey? Before
yesterday? Maybe he did spot youand pulled the switch here you may change

(08:41):
the entire show. Sounds like alot of trouble to go to it,
doesn't it. Oh, come on, let's see what we can find out
inside. Good you sound pretty sureof it. A nice moll. No,
no, no, some information pleasein fink fifth This is space three.
Yeah. Look how long have youbeen here? Buster? No?

(09:05):
No? No? Alo? Okay, otto, then I'm here all the
morning making shorter I mean before thismorning. Ah, let me see you,
mamma and I we came here whenCarol was three and Hansie he will
six. Now a carol, lookof the family history? Will you twenty
three years? Why? Yeah, yeah, yeah, twenty three years making

(09:26):
shoulder. Look, Martha, youmust have the wrong place. I would
swear this is the place, misterMitchell. Yeah, it is the place
for storder. Yeah yeah, let'sget outside. Come again when you come,
spencil happy strudle to you too.Can it understand it? Mister Mitchell?
What's Martha? Isn't it possible youget mixed up about the location of

(09:46):
the spears China ware shop? SupposeI must haven't? Yeah, I what's
a shore? Wait a minute? This guy with a push cart? Maybe
you listen to this regular beat?Hey just a minute, mister, yeah,
yeah yeah, can you street?Look? Is this your regular beat
beat? What is this beat? You push your card around as part of

(10:07):
town often? Oh? Yeah, yeah, yeah, every good it is.
Yeah. You see that bakery shopa couple of doors down the street.
Yeah yeah? How long has itbeen there? Well? I don't
know, you don't, huh,Steve? Maybe? Yeah, you see,
I don't know how long is thebakery shop there? Because I have
only had this card for five yefor I mean the bakery shop was there

(10:31):
when you started pushing this card.Oh yeah, yeah, and such strudle
that they make you would not believe. Look, I know all about the
strudle. Come on, Martha.I'm sorry, Steve. I don't know
what to say. I wonder Iwas just thinking, Martha, it was
very convenient of a gent with apush card to come by. Just now
you think he likes I don't know, but that's what we're gonna find out

(10:54):
right now. Come on. Wecheck the shops up and down the street,
but all the shopkeepers agree that thebakery has been there as long as
they can remember. Finally, wework our way to a jewelry store at
the end of the street and wequestion the proprietor and get the same answers.
Bakery shop has been on the streetas long as I can remember,

(11:15):
in that same location. Have wedown the block on the west side?
Yeah, all right, Steve, obviously I'm wrong about the street, but
the Chinawa shop must be right aroundhere somewhere, perhaps in the next block.
You said, perhaps you could tellus the name of it is Spears,
Spears, I know I've never heardof it. Yes, sure,

(11:37):
quite sure, Yes, I amquite convinced at this point that I am
crazy. Look, Martha, Rotterdam, isn't your hometown, is it?
No? Why? Well, maybebeing a stranger in town, you got
more mixed up than you think.Maybe the spears isn't a different part of
the town all together, and maybethere is no spears at all. No,
look, you're being very kind aboutit's Steve, But I know what

(11:58):
you're thinking. Here is a girlwho claims to have seen a dangerous man.
So a government agent goes with her, expecting her to lead him straight
to that man. But suddenly shecannot. She is all mixed up.
It sounds as if I had imaginedthe whole thing. Doesn't it anything else?
Oh? No, thank you,oh, thank you for your trouble.

(12:22):
We are sorry to have bothered you. But now, Steve, oh
look around a few more streets,I guess, Steve. All I can
say to you is this, Somewherein this city, I saw Rudolph Carpet.
I thought I knew the name andlocation of the shop. I appeared
to be wrong about both, butplease believe me, I did see him,

(12:46):
and I will not rest until Ican remember where and lead you to
him. Yeah, yeah, sure. Come on, man, I'll take
you back to your hotel. Thankyou for seeing me into the lobbist ture.

(13:09):
I'm growing up to my room nowand rack my brain until I can
remember. I will call you assoon as I go. Okay, Martha,
mister Mitchell brother, talk about terrorshaped tones? Alligator? Did you
find out what you want? Tramata? Not exactly. Look, missus Gluten,
what kind of a girl is Mark? All my girls just good girls.

(13:33):
That's not what I mean. WhatI'm wondering right now is whether Marther
could have imagined the whole thing.Maybe you've got something there. What do
you mean? Well? This smarter. She is the flight of one of
the team. Oh yeah, lastyear she had her engagement Alman. Since
then she is not so happy andkeep it to herself. Yeah, I
would say she could have imagined.Hey, hang on, explosion sounded like

(13:58):
it came from upstairs. Come on, mister Mitchell, your phone it is
curtly good. But if you shwingthe arms fall stride l coach, this
is no time for a running lesson. I don't see no wait around this
corner. Hey, look at that. The door to that room blown right

(14:18):
off. It's hinges. Yeah, your own flames coming up, mister Mitchell
Marte room, what your quick turnin the alarm. I'll see what I
can do with that fire extinguisher onthe wall, but I can't make it
enough of a dent in the flames. They get into the room, I

(14:39):
just about hold my own for tenminutes or so, and then the firemen
arrive and go to work. Finallythey get the fire enough under control so
they can work their way into theroom. Missus Gilton and I wait outside
in the hall. Michell. Anybodyin that room there would not be much
left often. I'm afraid you're right, Missus. Will look out. They
come with the stretcher. Oh Mottom, Well, she sure wasn't just imagining

(15:03):
she saw Rudolph Carpel. That's asense, but it's also a sense she'll
never be able to lead me tohim. Now. Three chimes mean good

(15:26):
times on NBC. There's music andfun for you tomorrow evening here on NBC.
For music here the premiere broadcast ofa refreshing youth series called Musical Merry
Go Round, bringing a melodic blendof classical and popular music, and for
lives tomorrow here Monty Woolley as hestars in The Magnificent Montague, formerly heard
on Fridays and now brought to youas a Saturday night feature. Remember tomorrow

(15:48):
evening It's musical Merry Go Round andThe Magnificent Montague. Now back to Dangerous
a Son starring Brian Don Levy asSteve Mitchell. Poor Martha, Yeah,

(16:12):
if she could only have remembered whereshe spotted Carpel before he rigged this booby
trap for her booby tp. Yeah, he must have had some sort of
a bomb rig here in the roomso that then she opened the door,
it exploded. Yeah, you knowfunny. She left me in the lobby
at least ten minutes before the explosion. Took her a long time to get
to her room. This carpell there, you look for him, now search

(16:37):
me. Martha was my only lead. Well, come on, let's what
happened, Martha. If you arealive but at room, what happened,
that's what I like to know.Apparently her room was booby trap. Martha.
We figured you were the one thatthey carried out on the stretcher.
But I did not go to myroom after I left you in the lobby.
No, I decided to walk aroundsomewhere and see if I could remember

(16:57):
about Carpell. So I did noteven take off my coat. I went
downstairs and out, and who gotwill be trapped in your room? I
don't know. Perhaps it was oneof the other girls. They visit back
and forth a lot. I canquickly find out. Wait a minute about
your Chances are that the killer hungaround the hotel long enough to see how
his trap worked. If so,he could have seen you entered the hotel

(17:19):
after the explosion, Martha. Withthat red raincoat you're wearing, you'd be
easy to spot. What are yougetting it? Maybe she's still around somewhere.
If there were only some way wecould trap him, make him think
I got it, mister Mitchell,h as red raincoat of matters. I
could squeeze into it. But ifyou go outside on maybe in the dark,

(17:40):
to killer built thing I am,Martha, he will follow me and
then you can follow himself. Idon't know. I might be pretty dangerous
for you, missus. Gluten, mister Mitchell, I am no weakling,
that I believe. But still, wait, what is it? I think
I figured out a way to doit without any risk either of you.
Oh, I will do anything tohelp, mister Mitchell. You don't have
to do a thing, Martha, except in a safe place. Missus gluten

(18:00):
sweet for instance. All right, but what are you going to do?
Give missus gluten your raincoat. Heand I are going for a ride,
mister bitch, I don't understand you. I put on the raincoat. You

(18:22):
get into the car and drive hereto the edge of the city. Now
you keep cleaning your neck around.Yeah, to see if we're being followed
any I'm not sure. Hey,here we are. See that little hotel
right there about it. That's agood at place as any. Come on,
Perhaps you'd be good enough to tellme box is witch. Look,

(18:44):
you're wearing Martha's red raincoat. Froma distance, you could pass as Martha.
Sure should all top we have figuredout already. But I supposed Carpel
is following. I see Sis gointo a hotel and in a minute I
come out alone. He thinks youhave hidden Marty. That's right. I'd
drive off devil back and if hetries for the hotel, I grab him.

(19:06):
I should slip out the back door, grab a cab back to your
hotel and wait for me. Andabove all, don't let anything happen to
Martha. Missus Lukens is out theback door. I wait a few minutes
and then go out the front.I get in the car and drive off
around the corner. I park, get out and work my way back to

(19:26):
a spot in the shadows to thealley across the street from the hotel,
and then I wait. Fifteen minuteslater, I see a gend approaching the
hotel, very cautiously. He couldbe my boy. He gets to the
and Princeton takes a quick look around, then slips inside. I'm just about
to go after him when suddenly there'sa faint sound behind me in the alley.
I start to turn around to somethingvery solid connects with the back of
my head and I take a dive. When I come out of it,

(19:52):
I'm all alone. I don't getit if the guy entering the hotel was
carpal and who slugged me? Andwhy I crossed the street, eat and
checked the hotel. But of coursethe guy has gone, so I head
back to missus Gluten's hotel. Sweet, oh, mister Bachu, come in.
Thanks? Oh, why you're hit? You got a lump lump?

(20:14):
Yeah, I'll sell her a loss. Believe me. Who did that?
I don't know. Incidentally, didyou come right back here after you went
out that back door? Yeah?Sure, I I'm just wondering, very
smarter, Why I said, verysmarter. That's just what I was afraid,
you said. I thought she washere with you. She paused,
But now I thought she was withyou. What do you mean I came
hide back here like you told me. Martha was truth leaving. She said

(20:37):
you had your telephoned her. Yahyah. She said you told that the
plans had been changed, that youwanted her to meet you at a toyting
place. Oh great, So whyisn't she with you? Because I'm not
the guy who telephoned her? Whatthen? Who did all three guesses?
Yeah? Look did Martha say wherethis phony meeting place were supposed to be?
Yeah? Yeah, yeah she did. Now come on, come on,

(21:03):
think I got the best entrance toOkay, I'll see you later.
Yeah. I head for the parkentrance past. But when I pull up
and see the crowd gathered there,I figure I'm a few minutes too late.
I expect to see Martha's body inthe midst of them. But as
it turns out, I'm wrong. Two guys with lots of bumpers and are

(21:26):
busily haranguing each other, much tothe enjoyment of the crowd standing around.
That first, I'm relieved, butwhen I look through the crowd, Martha
isn't fair. I asked a fewpeople if they remember seeing her, but
they tell me that the quarrel hasbeen going on about a half an hour,
and I haven't been paying any attentionto anything else, So it looks
like Carfell is finally got in theMartha and shut her mouth. I drive
back to the hotel and head frommy room. Hello Steve, Martha,

(21:55):
Yes, I Hey, Are youokay? Oh brother, that's your relief.
You know I'm gonna quit worrying aboutyou. First, I think you've
been blown up in your hotel room, but you come walking down the hall
a few minutes later. Just nowI figured Carpel has finally gotten to you,
But you show up in my room, safe and sound. I'm glad
you were wrong both times, Ohso am I. But what happened?

(22:15):
Well? I went to the meetingplace I thought you had told me about
over the telephone, but on theway I began wondering about the car,
wondering what it really had been you. Then the street was deserted, and
I became frightened, so I left. I see. When I got back
to missus Gluten's Sweet, she toldme you had not been the one who
telephoned me. Lucky you left whenyou did. Then, Yes, come

(22:40):
on, Martha, I'll take youback to missus gluten Sweet. All right,
Steve, do you think that itwas Carpel who called and disguised his
voice. Well, he'd be thelogical one, wouldn't he. Yes,
that means you definitely did see methe other day in that chang shop.
Yeah, here we are, Ah, hold on in sore. The two

(23:07):
of you finally got to get ussafely. From now on we must keep
an eye on de Chaman. Yeah. It might be a good idea if
you get some rest, Martha.Yeah, go into my bedroom and make
your stop at home. Thank you, I think I will. I am
rather worn out. Yes, well, mister Mitchell, But now did you
find out who the girl was whodied in Martha's hotel room? Missus good?

(23:27):
Oh? Yeah, it was FRIEDApoor thing. I guess she went
into wisarm thinking Marva stare Okay,I'm gonna make a telephone call. Telephone
call, not so loud? Whatis the secret? Who are you going
to telephone the morgue? So Imake my call and tell them what I

(23:48):
want to know. Half an hourlater they call me back, and what
they tell me doesn't surprise me atall. Well, they just finished the
autopsy on Frieda. She was stabbed. Did that stapped? You mean coup
Hill killed the long girl and thenridded up the explosion to me? Oh
no, I don't mean that atall, missus Gilden. Come on,
I want to have a little talkwith our little Martha. Has she got

(24:12):
to do it? That's just whatI want her to tell me. Hey,
she's gone. Yeah, look thewindow it's open. Yeah, an
extension phone beside the bed. Sheprobably overheard what the morgue told me.
I don't understand. But fire escapeoutside? Yeah? Are she is down
on the street hailing a taxi.Come on, let's get down on you

(24:33):
to the car fast. I couldswim. I saw a jump out of
that toxicap when it showed down youthe canal. Yeah, I thought so
too. But where'd she go?She's a good shimmer. Maybe she made
a minute. See that barge tiedup on the bank over there. She

(24:55):
could be hiding on it. It'sthe only cover I can see her quite
a way. Slow down, allright, okay, what are you doing.
I'm getting out here. I'll checkthe barge. You continue along the
canal away and if you don't sputter, come back here to the barge.
I jump out, hit the groundand rolled to my feet. Every second

(25:17):
count Now I jump before the bargelooks deserted. There are no lights.
The start walking towards a small deckhouse at the stern. Then as I
get to it and turned the corner, I spot a glint of metal.
I dropped to one knee in afire axe buries itself in The boat had
behind me close, but no cigar. Mother, I said, they put

(25:38):
it yans better. I should havepicked up your head when I had the
chest. You mean, in frontof that other hotel, when I was
waiting for Carpell to show up.Yeah, you sure didn't want me to
grab him? Then, did youknow that bit? Yeah? I think
I finally got you pegged. You. See, I caught you in one
light, so I figured maybe you'dlie about a few other things. Looking

(26:00):
back on the deal. In thatlight, a lot of things fell into
place. But are you talking aboutYou told me you got a phone message
from me setting up a meeting place. You said you went there and it
was deserted. That's what tripped youup, because there's been a traffic accident
there and a crowd had gathered. All right, all right, but you
cannot prove it. You you wreckedthat story about a fake phone call as
an excuse for you to get outof missus gluten sweet. You knew I

(26:22):
had a plan to trap Carpel andyou were afraid it did work. That's
why you slug me when I wasclosing in on him. No, that
is not true. What's your angle, Martha? Blackmail? You don't know
what you're talking about. Sorry, your eyes just gave you away. Sure
it all fits. You spot Carpelhere and Rotterdam and tried to blackmail him,
but he won't pay. So youget me over here to protect you
and to show him you mean business. Then you take me on a wild

(26:45):
goose chase around town, pretending you'relooking for him. Yes, it's been
quite clever. What you both movealmost too fast for me. It was
a bit difficulty that I followed thechaise here from the hotel stand quite still,
both of you, Hey, Iremember you. But of course Martha
brought you into my jewelry store yesterdayto in fire about a mythical china shop.

(27:08):
Pretty smart Martha parading me in frontof Carpell to let him know that
you could blow the whistle on himanytime you wanted. As I say,
Martha is a clever girl of us. Listen to me, Martha. One
thing I don't get is why youkilled that other girl, Frida. Frida,
did you say, yeah, oh, I believe I can explain that
or you see, After your visitto my jewelry store, I realized I

(27:29):
was powerless that I must pay Marthathe blackmail, So I telephoned a hotel
room to tell her. As Iwas talking, I heard a suddenly exclaimed
Frida, as if someone had justcome into the room. I get it
now, Freda heard you talk ina carpel. You killed her a shut
her mouth, and then rigged anexplosion to make it look like Carpeller tried
to kill you, cap and youmust listen. I will not blackmail you
anymore, I promise. I knowwhat do you mean? Simply that if

(27:52):
I killed both of you, Iwill be quite safe again. No,
I am afraid you're a little toolate, Carpel. What do you mean,
I know the id the Rotterdam police. There's a car coming toward us
along the canal bank. It shouldbe them. You're bluffing. No,
No, I see the headlights.I hear it too. Thanks for turning
your head sho An. No,Martha, you're not going anywhere. Listen,

(28:15):
Mitch here on the barge, MissusLuten and Martha's with me. Then
down to the end of the canaland come back. I'm glad you did.
I just passed you off as theRotterdam Police. As for you,
Mata, you have disgrace the Glutenswitz and girls. You are the rough
nappolink o cake. You will turnon your schwist suited bunch. Yeah.

(28:37):
I don't imagine she'll be doing muchrunning from now on as far as disgracing
the Gluten Schweitzen girls, though,I'm sure you and the rest of your
team will live that down. MissusGluten. Incidentally, there's one thing that's
been puzzling me all through this deal. Your team is called the Gluten Schwitzen
girls. Right. The commissioner toldme that the Schwitzen came from the name

(28:57):
of the coach. But when Igot here, I find you coaching the
girls. So where Schweitzen? Wouldyou keep a secret? Really? Yaw
gaw Schweizen missus gluten confidentially? Whocould marry a man with a name like
that? Three times mean good timeson NVC On the Big Show this Sunday,

(29:34):

Others in the cast where Martha Wentworth, Tony Barrett, Virginia Gregg, Sidney
Miller and Barney Phillips John is againnext week at this same time, when
Brian don Levy, starring in therole of Steve Mitchell, will embark on
another dangerous assignment. Dangerous Assignment cameto you from Hollywood. Next enjoy the

(30:49):
Man called X and Your Hip Paradeon NBC tonight. Welcome Back. So
let's just get this straight. Shemarried a man named mister Gluten who owned

(31:11):
a pretzel factory. Who were herother suitors mister Protein, who owned a
meat processing company, or mister Dairy, who owned a brand of cheese.
Also, it feels like some wiresgot cross because at the start of the

(31:33):
story, the commissioner says that missusGluten went over to the Olympics from Saint
Paul. So she was in SaintPaul. There was not a Saint Paul
Olympics. But she went over tothe Olympics and met mister Gluten and never
came back to the States. Theway that Marshall Wentworth plays her with this

(31:56):
big german accent seems a bit much. But actually, despite the fact that
not making sense in the context ofthe story, Marsia went were so fun
in this role that I barely careabout the disconnect between her performance and the
way she's supposed to be in thescript. That plus, I think this

(32:19):
was a really clever setup because thatwhole China shop thing was a red herring
and I spent probably way too muchtime wondering what was going on with the
china shop. Was there some bigconspiracy or was someone being threatened? And

(32:39):
this is the type of thing thatif I were a sleuth, I would
get bogged down endlessly in this sortof situation. But I think Steve sort
of bottom line thinking is it's notthere. So if it's not there,
what's the explanation? And that's wherehis mind went, and he came up
with a good solution and used oneof his standard Steve Mitchell moves to get

(33:05):
out of the situation. So Ithought this was a really solid story and
I enjoyed it thoroughly. Listener commentsand fadeback now and we have an email
from Richard who writes, Hello,Adam, I hope you and the family
are enjoying a wonderful summer. Ienjoy seeing the pictures that you post on
Instagram. I wanted to share anobservation about dangerous assignment that always makes me

(33:31):
laugh Towards the beginning of each episode, Steve will meet someone that he does
not recognize, and this person usuallyhas a hostile, slash aggressive attitude towards
it. The person will then identifythemselves as some unlike Sergeant Gumby from the
French Police, Steve that instantly handsover his secret agent credentials without asking for

(33:57):
any from this unknown individual. Youwould think secret agent training would include something
like establishing someone's identity before you handover yours. Those were certainly simpler times
back then. Apparently all the bestCremassachusetts the land of mosquitoes this summer.
Well, sorry about the mosquitoes,Richard, and Richard, I think you

(34:21):
raise an interesting point. Now.Part of this is just the type of
person that Steve is. Steve isa very intuitive, guts driven individual.
And so if you tell him thatyour Sergeant Gumby and he thinks about it
and says, you know, ifhe is Sergeant Gumby, then all of

(34:44):
his behavior heretofore makes sense, andI think I believe him, and I
think we can work together. Inaddition to that, photos were not as
prevalent on identification cards as they aretoday, and many television programs and movies
of this era. Plot point ofsomeone just being able to grab an identification

(35:07):
card and impersonate the holder, evenif they look entirely different was used multiple
times, and with good reason. The requirement of pictures on ID cards was
just not there for the most part. It wasn't until nineteen fifty eight that

(35:27):
California, for example, began torequire photos on driver's licenses. And it's
safe to say that in most ofthe country Steve has visited, particularly those
that were either Third World countries tostart with or had been touched by war,
probably didn't have photos as well, which would have made any credentials fairly

(35:50):
easy to fake. So I don'tthink Steve could rely on the credentials because
someone who would lie about being apolice sergeant would likely have forged credentials in
place already to support that lie.So ultimately it comes back to his instincts.

(36:10):
Now, should he ask for credentialsto back up those instincts, even
though those credentials could theoretically be forged, Yes, but I can understand why
he doesn't. Now, for thoseof you who don't follow us on Instagram,
the pictures he referenced are generally picturesof things that I see out and

(36:32):
about which I post in addition tothe audiograms. Most of it is not
show related. I tend to usethe Instagram Stories feature. I never thought
the feature was useful when I heardabout it, but it allows those who
are kind of curious about getting alittle glimpse of our world here in Otaho.

(36:55):
And mostly it's parks and animals thatsort of thing. My own dog
and cat have popped up a coupleof times. We don't really do people,
but there's a lot of great naturalstuff to say, and occasionally we'll
take in something inside. Recently,we went to the Discovery Center here in

(37:15):
Boise and I took a lot ofpictures in there. They had this really
massive Star Wars collection on display, and I'm not a Star Wars super fan,
but i do love the original filmsand I like some of the stuff
that's come since then, and soI took a few pictures posted them on

(37:37):
my story. And that's nice becausepeople who are really curious to see but
somebody cruising over to Instagram to lookat all the posts they see pretty much
audiograms and show related stuff. Sothere's no big Star Wars post in my
history. But again, thanks somuch for the lovely email, Richard,
truly appreciated. Now it is timeto thank our Patreon supporter of the day.
