They all spell the same thing,though, trouble. But when I
walk into the Commissioner's office, Idon't realize this assignment's going to involve my
trying to hold an Eastern European countrytogether with my finger ring. Morning Commissioner

Ruth said, you had an assignmentfor me. I do, Steve,
where do I go this time tojail? Let's have that again. You
heard me, I'm sending you tojail. Oh look, so maybe I
did pad my expense account a littlelast month, but that isn't enough.
Reasoneriously, Steve, there's sumone injail. I want you to talk to
a woman. Well, you're soundingbetter by the moment. I'm afraid you
don't get the point. Okay,what is the point? The point is

on the end of the crona cutlass, and it's a shop one. Look

Take a look at this map,Steve. See this little country in Eastern

That lady is the missing army lieutenant'swife. This morning the police got an
anonymous tip that she hadn't her possessiona jewel from the handle of the chronic
cutlass. What that's right, Steve. They picked her up and brought her
in the jewels in her purse.You trying to tell me that the army

lieutenants really alive and has been sendingjewels from his sword back home one of
the time for his wife to sell. I'm only giving what facts we have
at this time, Steve, butI think there's a lot more to it,
and appears on the service. Forinstance, maybe this whole thing's a
frame. I think it is,but thinking it and proving it are two
different things. Naturally, that countryis clamoring for the return of that sword.

Well, we've got to find itbefore we can return it, right,
And I think you know there areinterests in that country who would prefer
the the sword not be returned,or if it is that, they're the

outfit will be trying their best togive me that sword right in the neck.
So I'm mosey down to the jailand talk to the army lieutenant's wife,
Missus Rogers. I'm glad you came, mister Mitchell. Maybe you will

believe me. Nobody else around hereseems too well. Suppose you start from
the beginning, Missus Rogers. Allright, five years ago, my husband
was reported missing an action. Iwas convinced that he'd been killed. I
still I am go on. Inthe last letter I received from him,
he mentioned something about having a valuablesword in his possession, the Kroners something

or other Chroner cutlass. Yes,he said that it had been entrusted to
him so that it wouldn't be capturedby the enemy. That was the only
thing he said about it. AndI never heard from my husband again,

that's still not very much to goon, but I'll guess I'll have

way to find out, so Istart checking. Then twenty three cab drivers

later, I find one who rememberspicking up a sailor from Missus Rogers address
and taking him to the waterfront justin time to catch a freighter that was
pulling out the Golden Star. Icheck further and find that the Golden Star
is now in route to Liverpool,England. So I fly to England and
I'm waiting on the dock in Liverpoolwhen the Golden Star pulls in. It

hell, my old friend Inspector Barrett. Hello Mitchell, I'll Scotland yard

when we get inside, Perkins isnowhere inside. Well, quite your disappearing

that paper is making quite an issueof the incident, you all. Perkins's
murder just now convinces me more thanever, that this whole deal is a

stairs. He's shooting blind and ifI've counted correctly, as gun is empty

She's coming at me with a battleaxe. I ducked just in time.
