(01:12):
it's time for this week's episode ofDangerous Assignment. The original air date February
the third, nineteen fifty one,and the title is naz A Fugitive Dangerous

(01:36):
Assignment starring Brian don Levy as SteveMitchell. Yeah, danger is my assignment.

(02:00):
I can send to a lot ofplaces I can't even pronounce. They
all spell the same thing, though, trouble, But when I walk into
the Commissioner's office, I don't realizethis assignment's going to wind up with a
native bandit giving me a big breakby heaving a knife at me. Morning

(02:22):
Commissioner Ruth said, you wanted tosee me, I do, Steve,
and don't bother to sit down yourplaying leaves for Malay in one hour,
Malaya. Look, I just gotout of one jungle. Don't tell me
you're sending me back into another one. It's just what I am telling is,
Steve. Aren't you sort of stretchingmy luck a little? That's the
right word for it, all right, stretching? Yeah, what do you
mean? Rubber a jokestree yet?Okay, what's the deal, Steve?

(02:42):
Take any list of vital war materialsrubbers near the top. So what am
I supposed to do? Go overto Malay and tap a few rubber trees.
You don't have to. They've quitea few thousand natives on the job
already over there. No, it'swhat's happening after the rubber is harvested that
we're interested in. Just what ishappening? A gang of so called bandits
has been raiding the various plantation Steve. They're organizing and equipped like a small
army. They've been setting fire upbuildings, terrorizing the natives and in general

(03:05):
interfering seriously with the entire operation overthere. I see, Look, isn't
this a matter for the British?Dave ashtar cooperation in the matter, Steed,
and I think the main reason isthere's a rumor that the leader of
these bandits is an American boy.To our knowledge, nobody's ever gotten a
good look at this leader, orat least lived to tell about. Steve.
It's vital to both countries that wesmashed this gang. Who knew.

(03:27):
I work with a British intelligence agentnamed Willoughby. He's waiting for you in
Singapore right now, Steve, getover there, work with Willoughby, and
then go anywhere to anything that's necessaryto put these bandits out of business.
But keeps well, that's it.You've got your assignment. Good luck.

(03:54):
The National Broadcasting Company is presenting DangerousAssignments, starring Brian Dunlevy as Steve Mitchell,
colorful two fisted government agent. Atall those places of the world where
danger and intrigue walk hand in hand. There you'll find Steve Mitchell on another
dangerous assignment. Sure, I've gotmy assignment, just a simple matter of

(04:21):
starring the Malayan jungle to find outwho's been burning up a few assorted rubber
plantations. And I've got an uneasyheinst that whoever it is has a king
size hotfoot reserved for me. It'sFriday when my plane lands in Singapore and
I head for the office of theagent Willoughby atterly nast in this Mitchellam.
I understand there's a rumor that theleader of these bandits is an American.

(04:43):
Yes, that's the rumor. Whatit's worth, I don't know. None
of the bandits has ever been captured, not one of the Blighters know.
We've set several traps for them, but they've avoided them very skillfully. What
sort of traps, Willoughby, Well, we've doubled our patrols in the whole
area. We've also converted several ofthe plantations which haven't yet been attacked into
minute your fortresses, concealed machine gunin placements, troops hidden in foxholes,
and so on. But they alwaysseem to know which plantations are guarded and

(05:06):
which aren't. As I said, that information appears to be amazingly accurately.
Yeah, has anybody ever gotten agood look at this bandit leader. I'm
not sure, Mitchell. There's oneperson who may have what do you mean
may have? It's been a chapin the next ron. Mister Perkins,
would you step in here a momentbusy? All right? This is Steve

(05:28):
Mitchell, agent from the United States, mister Perkins, Steve, mister Perkins
an important. How you do,mister Perkins? Would you mind repeating your
story to mister Mitchell Perkins very well? Has mister Willoughby told you just now?
I am an import in, misterMitchell, and in the course of
my business, I make frequent tripsinto the jungles to the north of here.
I see now. Last week Iwas staying at a friends plantation deep

(05:49):
in the interior, and suddenly thisgang of bands attacked the plantation about midnight.
As I remember, go on,my friend ran out of the house.
As soon as you heard the shots, he was killed on the spot.
I well, apparently the bandits didn'texpect it would be anyone else in
the house, so they didn't matter. Immediately they said fire to the outbuildings,
and doing the excitement, I wasable to crawl out of the window

(06:11):
and into the jungle. Well,I am sorry to hear about your experience
and the laws of your friend Perkins. But I don't quite see what connection
this has with Well, he wasafter my return here to Singapore that my
real troubles began. Mitchell, whatdo you mean, Well, two days
ago I was almost run down thestreets. Well, I'm convinced it was
a deliberate attempt on my life.Well, last night I was fired upon.
Why yes, yes, it appearsthat someone's quite anxious to put mister

(06:33):
Perkins out of the way in Butwhy Well, it's my theory that Perkins
may have seen the bandit leader inaction. But how did they know you
were there at the plantation during theraid? Perkins? Well, my coat.
In my haste to escape, Ileft my coat in my room.
You see, it had my namein it. I get it. They
found the coat and figured out youmust have been there and must have seen

(06:54):
them. Perkins. Did you seeany of them? Yes, well,
there was a lot of confusion,of course, But after I stepped into
the jungle, I saw several figuresin the clearing. Well, now,
don't hannock about it. Did youget a good look at them? Only
a brief one was one of theman American. Well, I really couldn't
say. I remember it was inthe middle of the night and the only

(07:14):
illumination came from the fires they'd set. You think you'd recognize any of them
if you saw them again? Well, that's the same question mister Willoughby asked
me, And all I can sayis that I might. I don't know.
You know, Willoughby, it's prettyobvious to me that this bandit leader
is somebody who's known in the interior. It's my notion too. Yeah,

(07:35):
he could figure that Perkins would bemaking other trips into that country and my
spot, I'm all of which givesme the idea what our one chance of
finding him is. You haven't minda trip into the interior for the three
of us? Yep, As I'vealready burket the subject to mister Perkins,
but he doesn't seem to think veryhighly of it at all. Gentlemen,
I'm sure you understand my position.Frankly, I'm not a particularly courageous man,

(07:57):
and they've already been two attempts onmy life right here in Singapore because
of this, And to return tothose Jungles, it seems to me i'd
been inviting my own murder. Yeah, we understand your position perfectly, mister
Perkins. But I hope that youunderstand just how important this deal is.
Well are these bandits are seriously interferingwith the production of a raw material.
It's vital to both of our countries. I know that, mister Mitchelly.

(08:18):
It's just right now. You're apparentlythe one man who can put the finger
on their leader. Oh I don'tknow, Willoby, And I'll give you
all the protection that's humanly possible ifyou make this trip with us, all
right, mister, Thanks a lot, mister Perkins. Yes, I was
second that how soon can you getready? Oh? It shouldn't take me
along to pack my suitcase. Notmore than an hour, I'd say,

(08:39):
very well, we're leaving an argnwe go part way by train, take
a jeep as far as we can, and then start out on foot through
the jungle. It's hot and damp, and Willabys in front, Perkins in
the middle, and I'm bringing upin the rear, and all three of
us are trying to look in everydirection at once. These bandits could be

(09:01):
hiding anywhere around us. That's apossibility, of course, But I rather
darted. It seems more likely thatthe main camp is farther in the interior,
but they may have scouts watching thisvery trail. Look, why can't
we take a boat up the river? We get out in the middle of
that river. We'd really be makingtargets of ourselves. No, no,
it's safe for here in the jungle. Oh dear, what was that?

(09:24):
Burder? An animal? Sounded like? Oh, it's sold like somebody getting
killed. They get easy, Perkins. How much farther to the first plantation
on our list will condom more thana mile or so? Another mile of
this jungle? Oh, I wishI'd never agree to make this trip.
I can't get rid of the feelingthat I'm walking into a death trap.
What an optimist, Perkins. Fivewill get get ten. We'll make it

(09:45):
to the plantation safe and sound.Well, you will pardon me if I
do not accept your wager, Mitchell, But I certainly hope you are right.
Hey, watch out, what isit? I'm in a tree?
I got him. I told youto, got sportsworts. Get your head
up, bout of the dirt andtake a look. Perkins. That was

(10:07):
no scout unless they're wearing snake skinsthese days. Oh dear the song fifteen
feet if he's an inch? Thanks, so chapping looks like the rascal a
zero dint on me. Right,we've not only got bandits to watch out
for, now it's snakes yet.Come on, let's speed it up a
little while. Here's our first plantation, well may after all? Yeah,

(10:35):
hey, quite a spread? Whoowns it? Absentee corporation by the resident
manages A chap named Hartford is standingup on the checking shed, brist no,
no Americans half known Harford, stillpoking around the bushes looking for the
bandits. Quite Harford. I'd likeyou to meet mister Mitchell. A newspaper

(10:58):
card is pundered, pleased to meetyour hyprid A little off. You're beat
up in this neck of the woods, aren't your Mitchell? Oh? I
don't know my beats. Where there'snews Hertford and these attacks on the plantations
come under that heading. I thinktroops arrive yet Hartford. Yeah, they're
dugging around the edge of the plantation. Say, according to that meeting all
of us had two weeks ago,you were going to put some extra patrols

(11:18):
in this area. That's right.Any of them around here. Oh,
here and there a one. Okayif I knows around the plantation, little
Hertford, Okay, go ahead, thanks, come on Brown, I'll tag
along with you. Mitchell. Makesure you don't get lost. Okay,
we'll check with you before we leave. Hartford Willoughby. What's this meeting Hartford

(11:39):
was talking about? Oh? Itdoes. Two weeks ago, meteor we
called in all the plantation owners andmanagers to hipeline and set up plans for
the defense of the plantation against theseattacked by the bandits. Then Hartford or
any other plantation owner or manager andknows the defense plans for all the plantations.
That's right, Workins. Do yourecognize Hartford? I couldn't be sure

(12:01):
the Mitchell. You do you thinkthat hot food could be involved in this?
Right now? I don't think anythingwill be. I'm just trying to
find out. Brother. Look atthose machine gun emplacements. Oh, the
bandits would surely not attack of placeas heavily armed as this. Maybe they
would if they knew just where themachine guns were located. Perkins, any
of those workers over there looks familiarto you? No, No, I've

(12:24):
been looking at all of them veryclosely, but I don't recognize a single
one. How far to the nextplantation will be? Oh, it's two
hours, easy to travel. There'sa native village between here and then,
well marked trail. Who owns it? A Dutch one, lamborges. Okay,
we better get started. I've gotno hankering to be caught in the
jungle. After dark, we'll cometo my plantation. GenSan. Thanks,

(12:58):
Landor's thanks, thank you. You'reright just in time. Another hour and
it will be quite dark, andin these times it is not wised to
be out after I hardly agree withthat. Good evening, gentlemen. Well,
my wife Zukala, Hello, Iam honor Or, I should say
my pride three months now. Yes, the three of you will of course

(13:24):
spend the night here. It's verykind of you. You were from this
part of the country. Cicala,No I am not. If you excuse
me, gentlemen, I will givethe necessary orders to acco. Would you
care for I think, gentlemen,a little later, maybe right now,
I'd like to take a look aroundyour plantation if I might, But of
course I would be glad to showyou. Ron. I will tell Sukala
that we will be back for webe. She must be at least twenty

(13:50):
years younger than he is. Andthe wife. Yeah, and she's not
from this part of the country either. How long ago did these raids start.
We've been going on for between twoand three months now. Three months
ago she married Van Borheisen moved intothis area. Interesting thought, isn't it.

(14:15):
We knows around the plantation. It'sfortified just like the other one.
But Perkins doesn't recognize any of theworkers. We have a late dinner and
turn in. Perkins room is betweenWilloughby's and mine. I don't know how
long I've been asleep when all ofa sudden, the racket jerks me out
of bed. In the window, tongues of flame are looking at the outbuildings

(14:35):
and the light of the fires,I can see guys running around, shooting
up the place. So here we'vebeen breaking our backs to find the bandits,
but the way it's turned out,the bandits have found us. You
are listening to Dangerous Assignments starring Briandon Levy as Steve Mitchell. I run

(15:09):
the Perkins room and jerk open thedoor. It's Mitchell, don't kill me.
I stay on the cover of Perkins. I'm going outside and see if
I can lend a hand. Overhere we Talkay, you've got just gun
christ Man, God, he stakehere siding with this man exhibit the house.

(15:33):
Hope that they have gotten through thedefenses Willoughby. They must have known
exactly where they weren't infiltrated. Betweenthem. They've already blown up two machine
gun in placements with hand grenades, and they killed the troops at the third
over there. Okay, round upwhat troops are left, Willaby. I'm
gonna make a try for that machinegun. I start circling towards the machine

(15:58):
gun. Suddenly a native looms upand me an ugly scar on his cheek
and in his hand a long knifethat's even uglier. I dropped on one
knee. Then I whistled over myhead. I died for him, but
he scrambles into the bushes. Ithrew a shot after I don't know whether
it takes effect. Then I spotanother band of drawing a beat on me,
this time I don't miss. Ifinally get to the machine gun.

(16:18):
I swing it around smell away intothe jungle, but by now the damage
has been done. I didn't joinedWilloughby and vandor he's on the front porch
of the house. The house,he said, if he's untouched. But
that is the only thing that HEAsthe plantation, he'd say, if he's
a completely lost, Well, itwasn't infernally well organized attack. Natural they

(16:40):
got right into the way. Waita minute, I was the meta Perkins.
Come on, I want to makesure he's okay. Where was he
joined the shooting? I went inhis room doing to stay on the cover.
But those band that seems to knoweverything else, they could have known
he was on the plantation too.Well, here we are, breakin you.

(17:02):
Hey, where is he now? We're in sight? Perkins? Oh
great, if they've gotten him,we're licked. He might have done what
he did during that attack before.Escape through the window. It's closed.
I'll try this closet then it'll bebetter at it Perkins. All over,
Yeah, it's all over, Perkins. You can climb down off that closet
shelf. Well, you told meto stay undercover min Yeah, he sure.

(17:25):
It took me literally, and Iguess it's just as well. Come
on, Wellby, let's go talkto him. Or he's right? Make
sure isn't there someplace elsewhere. Wecan stay here the rest of the night.
I know this plantation is probably thesafest place in the world right now
for you, Perkins. The banditshave already done their job here, and
quite completely too. I give ayear's pay to know how the blighters are
getting their information. Yeah, plantationis a complete loss, but v ast

(17:52):
long harm, and that is theimportant thing, gentlemen. My wife is
quite upset over these I've been tryingto tell you, the gentlemen, if
you will excuse me, what areyou going to do? Van wors I
think the only thing to do isto get out of here. I've been
trying to pop my wife into leaving, but she thinks we should stay and

(18:14):
try to rebuild. Oh tell me, Van Worries. Had you known your
wife long before you married her?You know, only a short time by
the US. She came here tolive about three months ago, and it
was shortly after that that these raidsstarted, raids that are obviously based upon
inside information. I have extended toyou the hospitality of my house, but

(18:38):
I have not extended to you theright to make accusations against my I'm not
making accusations Van for his I'm justtrying to find out who's heading up this
gang of bandits. I would stakemy life that my wife is not involving
so chating. I see, whatwould you stake on your neighbor? Then
Van worries Liba, the American Hartfordmanager at an explantation back emitche the only

(18:59):
thing I knew about these out forthese they do not trust him? Why
not? I do not know? Why? Simply do not trust them?
In metture, you pointed out earlierthat Hartford had complete information on the defenses
of these plantations. Yeah, Hartfordalso know we were coming to this plantation.
Perhaps he recognized me, and thatis why this time of night heartful.

(19:22):
Well, speak of the devil willbe quite I heard the shooting,
saw the flames on Tori, SoI had it for your plantation, here
to see what the trouble is.Oh, looks like I got here a
little too late. Sure it madea mess of the plantation, didn't they?
Yeah? I sure did Hartford.Amazing how they knew just where the
defenses were located, isn't it?Sure? Is? It must be pretty

(19:45):
smart, all right, Either thator somebody's giving them pretty smart information.
Yeah, could be got anybody inmind, Mitchell, Yeah, could be.
You know, you seem to betaking quite an interest in this deal
for a newspaper correspondent. Funny thingabout a newspaper correspondent. They do a

(20:07):
lot of traveling around visiting plantations.Sometimes it's a pretty neat color to accuse
somebody else, isn't it? Meaning? What? Meaning? Skippet? For
now? Well, gentlemen, Ifor one have had quite enough excitement for
one night, and then, ifyou don't mind, I'm going back to
bed. Okay, One thing though, what It might be a good idea
to lock your door, just incase. Perkin's heads for his room and

(20:36):
I go to mine next door.I stretch out on the bed and light
a cigarette. At this point,Hartford is high up on my suspectfulist.
He's in a perfect spot to haveengineered the raids. But I can't forget
ben Vorhe's wife Zakala either. Shecould fit into the deal. Some some
out too. Finally, I guessI doze off. I think sounds starts

(20:57):
pecking at mc brain. At firstI think I'm dreaming, but finally it
flows me away like a rustle ofpapers or a faint crackle of flames and
it stops. I head for Perkinsroom in a hurry. Perkins, all
right, Perkins locked Werkin, Mitchell, open up, Oh very well.

(21:26):
Who was the matter? Okay? You okay? Oh why yes, sleeping
like a baby. As a matterof fact, why did you hear a
sound a moment ago sound, Afaint crackling like sound. Well, yes,
but I thought I was dreaming.Let's take a look out the window.
Hey, look down there in theground just below the window. Oh,

(21:47):
cigarette still burning, Mitchell. Thatcrackling sound you heard, it must
have been the rustle of these bushes. I'll side my window. Somebody was
trying to get into my room.In a minute, look out the window
over there across the clearing. Ohtwo people. Why it's hard for talking
to vand for his wife. Yeah, impairing notes maybe or setting up the

(22:08):
next raid. Okay, throw yourthings in your suitcase, Parkins. Why
we're leaving now? Yeah, rightnow, come on, get packed.
I go back to the living room. Band for Race and Willaby are sitting
there drinking cognac. I have finallypersuaded my wife that we should leave the

(22:29):
plantation. Mitchell, where is yourwife. She've been to bed. If
our I see, we'll be anyof your roving patrols in this area.
Yeah, it's one of them arrivedhere just a few minutes ago. I'm
let's have them escort us back toheart for its plantation. Yeah, but
it'll be lightened just a couple ofhours, and it may be too late.
I'll explain later. Will be rightnow. I want to get started

(22:51):
very well now, one and Mitchells. As long as Sukala and I have
decided to leave the plantation, wemay as well accompany you. That way
we would be sure of prot Okay, Van Voris, you and your wife
pack up and let's get going.Half an hour later we shove off Van

(23:11):
Luris and his wife, Hartford Perkins, will it be the patrol and myself.
A little bit after dawn, wereached the native village that's halfway between
the two plantations and start walking throughit. Yeah, you told me that
you saw a Hertford and Ben Boyhis wife talking to good That's right.
They could have been cooking up anotherrate. Is that why you want to
get us on the patrol back toHartfits plantation? I mean you think the

(23:33):
rate is schedule over there could bewell, what's the matter? Keep walking?
He doesn't see me? Who doesn'tsee you? Over there? In
at point in native is a gentwith a scar on his face. That's
one of the bandits. He chuckedthe knife at me last night. Go
on without me. I'll join youlater at Hartford's plantation, and don't let
anything happen to Perkins. The restof the party moves on. I drop

(23:59):
out of side. In the bushis where I can keep my eye on
the village and the Native with ascar in his cheek. After a while,
he eases away from the village.I tail him through the jungle,
keeping well back so he won't spotme. An hour later, he reaches
a small clearing, and I knowI've found the bend its main camp.
There must be two dozen of himlying around, and in the center there's
a guy trying to raise someone ona walkie talkie. I go he know

(24:23):
he he's not having any luck thatI am, because a lot of things
have suddenly fallen into place. Iturned and start to leave. Then I
freeze. One of the bandits iscoming along the trails of the clearing.
He'll pass right by me and besure to see me. I've got to
get the jump on him. Iwait until he's right up to me,
and then I dive prison. Hedrops his gun. Claus, there's a

(24:44):
throat. I know. If helets out one peep, I'm a dead
duck. I increase the pressure tighter. Finally his knees buckle and he sums
to the ground. I drag himunder the bushes and take off. It's
the middle of the afternoon. Iget the Hartford's plantation, and I was
getting worried about you, Mitchell, about to send the patrol back to find

(25:04):
you. I'm glad you didn't.Where are the others? Are they all
inside the plantation? Hearts at patrolleader around anyway, Yes, he's right
over there. I left Tenant Shuffield. What is it going to, Mitchell?
Once a word with you. I'velocated the band its main camp.
What's that, Mitchell? Yeah, let's see it's three pm. That other
get us time? Enough time, enough of what we're gonna cook up A

(25:25):
little gag? Will it be?If it works, We're not only going
to get the whole gang, willalso nab their leader that I find mine
furnishing the liquor that'chel, But Idon't quite see the reason for suddenly having
a cocktail park or just felt likea little celebration, Hartford, I do

(25:47):
not think there is cause for anyof us to be celebrating right now.
My husband and I have just lostour plantation. My dear, you must
reconcide yourself. I for one, will feel more like celebrating when I am
safely back and singer Paul Mitchell cheerup Perkins. The worst is over.
That's why I want to celebrate.But celebrate what. Let's see, it's
exactly five thirty pm right now.In just ten minutes, those bandits will

(26:11):
all be captured. What are youdoing? It's very simple. You see,
I located their main camp. Youphone their camp. That's right is
Ndori's left. Denell Sheffield and hispatrol are closing in on him right now,
Mitchell, my haughtiest congratulation, thanksNdorie. Well, come on,
we'll be Let's go outside and tellthe rest of the troops they can knock

(26:33):
off right, Okay, we'll bearound to the back. Yes, you
think at a web, Mitchell,I don't know. It's our only chance
of pegging the leader. But Istill don't see how you intend to find
our just who it is? Okay, hold it here now we'll just listen
for a while. Let'll listen towhat quiet there it is coming from that

(26:56):
corner room. Come on in theback door, now down the hall and
keep it quiet. There we arethere is undoubtedly locked, but it's flimsy.
One push, how to do it? Come on, we'll rush it
together, sort of get back fora running start. Yeah, come on,

(27:18):
ready, all right, let's gocomplete with walk to talking trying to
warn your boys he's he's gone.I said, I got his gun,
matte. Anyway, what's going on? Very simple, harree, We just

(27:42):
grabbed the bandit leader? What thisman? Yeah, Perkins, I do
not understand. Posing as an importergave Perkins a good excuse to travel this
area picking up information, but whenthe plantations were fortified, he realized he
needed more accurate information, so herigged up his story about being an eye
would miss and the attempts on hislife to give him an excuse to be
brought to these plantations. Yeah, put him in a perfect spot to transmit

(28:04):
information about the defense to his boysby means of that walkie talkie. He
kept in this suitcase, you see, Perkins. I heard one of your
boys using a walkie talkie in thejungle, probably trying to get in touch
with you. It made a faintcrackling sound, just like the one I
heard last night. And speaking oflast night, Hartfred, what were you
talking to missus van Vorhis about utterlatch? Van Vories? I knew you

(28:30):
didn't like me, so I decidedto talk to your wife instead. To
Warner about Mitchell me, Oh no, look, I'm not that big a
wolf. I don't mean that.You didn't sound like a newspaper, corresponded
to me, so I was, well, I was getting a little suspicious
of your connection with Well, that'sthe switch. Sheffield to Mitchell. Hello,
what's a walkie talking Hell? Let'shave it a thing. Mitchel to

(28:52):
