for this week's episode of Dangerous Assignment. The original air date is March the
(01:41):
twenty fourth, nineteen fifty one andthe title is Recover Strolling Dynamite Jurious Assignment,
starring Brian Darlvey as Steve Mitchell.Yeah, danger is my assignment.
(02:23):
I get sent to a lot ofplaces I can't even pronounce. They all
spell the same thing, though, trouble. But when I walk into the
Commissioner's office, I don't realize thatthis assignment's going to wind up with somebody
trying his best to hand me apresent, a load of dynamite with a
lip fuse. Good morning, Commissioner. Ruth left a note on my desk
(02:47):
if you wanted to see me.Incidentally, where is she at the Red
Cross Blood Bank donating some blood?I gave her the day all I've got
a date for the same thing.Every American should donate blood to the Red
Cross. Right now, I thinka look at this piece of string.
Describe it to me as accutally asyou can. What is this some kind
of a game? You know better? In a moment? Now, describe
that pizzas dring to me. Okay, okay, it's about a foot eleven
(03:10):
inches to be exactly, okay, eleven inches. It's got four knots right,
and they're unevenly spaced. Well, that's about all I can see.
So you're a string slaver, Commissioner, Is that what you called me in
here to tell me? Not exactly. In the first place, I have
a hunch that's about the most importantpiece of string in the world right now.
Why. And in the second place, it's not mine, belong to
Jim Slater. Oh, it's Jimback. That's good. Jim's dead,
(03:32):
Steve, Well, hey, letme have that again. He was murdered
in Panama the night before last.Jim Slater. Yeah, I know.
He was one of your best friends, Steve. That's why I figured you'd
want to take over his assignment.Yeah, I do, but I never
knew what Jim was working on.Commissionary just dropped out a site about a
month ago. A few people didknow about his assignment, Steve. I
(03:53):
sent him to Panama a month ago. Panama, what's going on down there?
Play? I'm afraid, Steve,Jim Slaider was down there investigating a
series of thefts that have been goingon for the last six months. Civilian
construction camps and Army engineer stations havebeen systematically burglarized. Look, isn't that
a matter for the National Police inPanama. Then what's been stolen makes it
(04:13):
strictly our business team. Oh well, what has been stolen? I am
I, And that's what Jim Slaterwas working on it. That's right,
And it looks like he was ona trail or something. Steve. He
found his body in an apartment inPanama City. The apartment have been ransacked
and all his papers and reports havebeen burned. I still don't see what
that piece of strings got to dowith all this. The string was found
in Slater's pocket. Steve was flownup here immediately right now, it's our
(04:35):
only lead. Any contacts in Panamawho can help me, Yes, Major
Dean of Army Intelligence. Steve, get down there and work with Dean,
try to figure out what that stringmeans, and above all find that stolen
dynam might before it's too late.Well, let's say you've got your Assignland.
Good luck. The National Broadcasting Companyis presenting Dangerous Assignments, starring Brian
(05:09):
Dunlevy as Steve Mitchell, colorful twofisted government agent. At all those places
of the world where danger an intriguewalk hand in hand, there you'll find
Steve Mitchell on another dangerous assignment.Jerry, I've got my assignment flight on
(05:29):
a Panamon find out who's been stealingdynamite and where they've got it, Hiden,
before they blow up the whole joint. All I've got to go on
is a piece of string that maynot have anything to do with it.
I reel. Since it's Tuesday. When my plane lands in Panamon, I
head for Army Intelligence Headquarters and MajorDeane, I've been expecting you, Mitchell,
looks like a sweet mess they've droppedin your lap. Yeah. According
to the Commissioner, there's been enoughdynamite stolen over the past six months to
(05:54):
blow up the whole works down. Here's to bad. You know, there
hasn't been much talk of publicity aboutthe canal lately, but it's still just
as important as ever. If forany reason, our ships couldn't use it
in the event of war, itcould be pretty disastrous. I know.
Look, I brought this piece ofstring with me, Deane, and right
now I'm feeling slightly foolish about itall and blame you. Piece of string
eleven inches long with four knots init. Yeah, it's supposed to be
(06:15):
the key to the whole deal.Do you think it is? I don't
know what to think, Mitchell. All I know is they found it in
Slater's pocket. Yeah, it musthave been pretty close. That's obviously why
he was killed. How about hisapartment? Have you got a key?
Yeah, we've kept it locked upsince. Here it is. I'll write
down the address for him. Okay, thanks, I'll take a look around
there and see if I can findanything that will help make some sense out
(06:36):
of this uncle's string. So Ihad for Slater's apartment. I searched it
from one end of the other, but all his papers have been destroyed and
there's nothing in the apartment to giveme any leads at all. Just as
I'm finishing up, the doorbell rings. Yeah, oh Jim here, Jim
(07:00):
jims later. This is his apartment, isn't? Yeah? It is?
Well? Look is he here ornot? Who are you? Well?
My name's Ferguson. I'm a friendof Jim's. Say what is all this?
Come on in? Where is JimSlater dead? What? How did
it happen? In an accident? No, he was murdered, murdered by
(07:20):
by whom That's what I'm trying tofind out. You say you're a friend
of Jim's. He was murdered acouple of days ago. It's strains that
you didn't know about it. Well, I've been in the interior for the
last couple of weeks. Oh.Look, if i'd known he was dead,
would I come up here to seehim? All right? I don't
suppose. So how long have you'veknown this? Later, just since he
came down here to Panama a coupleof months ago. But we seem to
(07:42):
hit it off for you, well, right from the start. How did
the two of you meet by ina bar? As a matter of fact,
look all these questions, who areyou? My name is Mitchell.
I'm a friend of Slater's too.H Did he tell you why he was
down here in Panama? Well,he said he was just knocking around.
I see. How about you youwork? Yeah, I'm a civilian employee
of the Army Engineers down Oh whatkind of work do you do? Allocation
(08:05):
of supplies material? He must bea pretty big job. Keeps the busy,
all right. I guess the Armyengineers have about every kind of supplies
there are, all the way fromsafety pins to dynamite. Huh, yeah,
look, you any idea of whySlater was killed? Not the slightest,
Ferguson, I thought maybe you mightbe able to help me there.
What do you mean by that,Mitchell? Well, just it maybe knew
you knew of someone who might havea reason for killing him. Oh,
(08:28):
well, afraid I don't. Youdidn't know any of his other friends?
Uh? Just Alice? She AliceGaines and nurse out at Santa Thomas Hospital.
The three of us used to dothe town once in a while.
I'm sure she couldn't possibly have hadanything to do with it. Oh,
probably not, okay, Ferguson, thanks for the information. I go out
(08:52):
to the hospital nast for Alice Gaines. They tell me she's out on the
grounds with a patient outside. Oneof the orderlies points her out to me,
and she's wheeling. An all fellowalong and one of the walks in
a wheelchair. Mister Gaines. Yes, I'm Steve Mitchell, a friend of
Jim Slater's. Oh, Jim,you've heard about his dad? Yes I
(09:13):
have. I'd like to talk toyou for a moment if I may.
All right, this is Senor Morales, one of my patients. Senor Morales,
how do you do, senor wouldyou excuse me? Of course,
my child? You see, hefeels good in the sun, all right,
mister Mitchell. Ever since I readthe story of Jim's murder in the
(09:33):
papers, I haven't been able tothink of anything else, mister Mitchell.
Who could have done such a thing? That's what I'm trying to find out,
Miss Gaines. How well did youknow Jim? Well, he hadn't
known each other about a month orso. I felt I knew him pretty
well well enough to worry about himanyway. Worry about him? Oh,
he seems so unsettled, just sortof drifting around. Claimed he was looking
(09:56):
for a job, but he neverseemed to be enthusiastic about it. I
see, Steady spent a lot oftime hanging around bars with some pretty unsavory
characters. What do you mean bythat? Oh, a bunch of political
agitators. People like that. Iused to read the Riot Act to them
about it, just sort of laughand kidney out. Now he's gone,
it's pretty hard to believe. Yeah, mister Mitchell. Do you think one
(10:22):
of those people you used to hangaround with could have killed I don't know
that's possible, but why look you'reasking me questions I can't answer right now,
but thanks very much for the informationyou've given me. I'll see you
later. Well, Steve, sowhile you've collected yourself a couple of suspects,
(10:46):
Ferguson and Ella's King. Yeah, you think they could be working together?
I doubt it. If they are, why would Ferguson dip me off
about her in the first place? That's Ryana doesn't figure I you say that
neither of them apparently knew which latterwas doing here in Panama. That's what
they told me, whether they arelying and out of something else? Again,
was speaking of something else? Howabout that piece of string? You've
got any glimmer on where it figuresin this due not the slightest matter of
(11:07):
fact, I'm beginning to think there'sno connection at all. Maybe right What
time is it, Steve, twentyminutes past midnight? There's not much more
we can do tonight. Excuse me, major Dane speaking. Yeah, what
let's have that again? Yeah?Where I see? How long are I
(11:28):
going? Okay, we'll be rightover something. Matter I'll say there is
I doubt it. Must think they'rereally safe again now they're knocked off Slater.
What do you mean they just pulleda raid on a civilian construction company
in little town about a dozen milesfrom here and got away with fifty cases
of dynamite. Why yeah, butI think we've got one of them.
They're holding him out there for us, a native named Miguel. Come on,
I want to talk to this Miguelreal bad. Maybe I can trade
(11:52):
this piece of string for a reallive suspect. Three times being Good Times
on NBC. There's Fun Tomorrow onNBC with two of your favorite families.
(12:13):
There's The Blandings starring Carry Grant andBetsy Drake as Mister and Missus Blandings,
the owners of the Beautiful, Expensiveand Troublesome dream House. And the hilarious
Harrises with Frankie Brother, Willie Juliusand all the other favorites of the Phil
Harris Alice Fay Show. That's tomorrowand every Sunday for Mister and Missus Blandings
starring Carry Grant and Betsy Drake andThe Phil Harris Alice Fay Show. Now
(12:43):
back to Dangerous Assignments starring Brian DonLevy as Steve Mitchell, Major Deane and
I Take Off at the construction company'scamp a dozen miles out of the city.
That a man waiting for us andwill be pull up in front of
the stop. That's right, I'mBarrows, a night watchman, Barrels.
(13:05):
It's Najor Jean evening. Major.Well, I suppose you tell us what
happened? Well, I was makingthe rounds an hour or so ago.
I thought I saw something in theshadows near one of the sheds, so
I went over to investigate and gotjumped. We jumped you a couple of
natives. I managed to clip oneof them, but the other was given
me a bad time. While wewere fighting, I heard a truck pull
up in front of the shed wherewe store the dynamite long about then I
(13:28):
got tagged over the right ear andwent out fans and asked to catch you
in. But I must have beenout only a couple of minutes, because
when I came to the shed doorwas opened and the truck was just pulling
away. I saw a Native runningafter the truck, trying to get aboard,
so I scrambled around in the brush, found my gun and threw a
shot after him. Did he hithim? Well, he let out a
hip the truck speeded up and thenative took off into the bushes, and
(13:50):
I followed. Five minutes later Ispied a guy hurrying along a dirt rule
the same guy, and I couldn'tbe sure, but it must have been
because he was bleeding from the shoulder, but he denied having any part of
it. The only thing you tellme was it? His name is McGill.
Where is he now? Well?I bandaged his shoulder and locked him
in the shack. Here a shoulder? Did it look like a bullet wound
to you? Sure? Did?Okay, good work, barrels. Let's
(14:11):
stop to him? Made it righthere? Huh. I'll just unlock this
for you. Thanks, go ahead, Oh make well. I don't know
you want to ask you a fewquestions? Well, I don't know any
answers. Why are you boys stealingdynamite? I don't still know you're planning
(14:31):
on using it for what they are. I don't steal no dynamite. How
did you get that bullet wound inyour shoulder? Then? Which it's not
a bullet wounder, it's a cutterfrom the knife. Now look here,
let's have him tell us how hegot the knife cut. Then go ahead,
may go. Whoa, there wasa fight in the containing the barn.
I got an away, and allof a sudden your knife cuts my
(14:54):
shoulder. I see what were youdoing near the construction camp here? We're
just walking along the road bleeding. All of a suddenly I'm gonna come jump
out at me, and you seeI still dynamite and he locked me up
on here. I don't still knowdynamite. You know, I think you're
telling the truth, Miguel, yousee the truth? I don't line.
(15:16):
Don't you think he's telling the truth? Major? Yeah, yeah, I
think yes. Two. It's goodto hear. Well. Anyway, it
doesn't matter much anymore now that weknow the big boy behind the operation.
Yeah, that's that's right, Steve. He's the one where really after anyway,
Okay, Miguel, you can shoveoff, good ass. Yes,
better keep out of these barroom brawlsafter this, seeing me, Yes,
(15:39):
stay out of the continus. Ibetter tell Barrows well to find out what
you want to do from him. We're letting him go. Barrows, you're
left, Hey, what's the dere convinced he's inn and okay, get
daring, Miguel. That's not justare you guys crazy if he isn't mixed
up in this deal? I wilda barrel, you know, Steve,
(16:00):
you were leading me behind there fora minute. I finally caught on.
Look, we will somebody kindly tellme what this is all about. I
don't think Miguel's too smart. Heprobably figures right now that he's putting one
over on us, and that's justwhat I want him to think. I
still don't see why you told himyou thought he was innocent. And she'll
also tell him knew where the bigboy bossing the whole operation is, well
do you no? But if Miguelthinks we know who his voice is,
(16:21):
he might try to warn and inthe process lead us to him. Oh
see, he got a sight, now, Dean, come on, let's
tag along. We tail Miguel gettingwell back. He takes a dirt road
to the village of mile or soaway, and then he heads straight for
the nearest bar. Dean and Iwait a couple of minutes, and then
we go inside to Miguel is gonnastay out of the canteen? Is high?
(16:45):
Yeah? No, wil bar,I guess. Come on. Let's
see's over to this corner of thebarn, try and keep ourselves as inconspiculous
and pocas. Hey, nice funnywhat I don't see him anywhere? No,
I don't either. So he didcome in here just for a drink.
And do you think he knew wewere telling him duck out the back
door? Maybe we'd better hold it. Yeah, Miguel coming out, turn
(17:08):
you back. We don't wanted tospot it right all right outside. He
must have given a message to somebodyin that back room. I think we're
out a crash at party back there. We don't need to take a look.
Big guy in a white suit, and that's Parker. He owns this
part. We've had on him forquite a while. Suppressive. We've always
(17:29):
thought song on It looks like wewere right. Watch it. He's coming
by us. Got a package inhis hand about the size of a book.
Yeah, man, let's see whattakes it too. If it is
a book, I've got a hunchit makes pretty interesting reading. Marka gets
in a car outside the bar andheads for the city. Major Dean and
(17:52):
I follow. About thirty minutes later, he pulls up in front of an
apartment house and goes inside. Steve, you think it's his headquarters apartment house.
I don't know. It could be. Let's go inside. I want
what's your apartment Parker was headed for. Hey, look there's a row of
mailboxes over there on the wall.Good, we'll see what we recognize.
Any other names, Rammeros Grant,Hey, look at the name on mailbox
(18:17):
number three. Alice Gaines. That'sthe nurse at Santa Thomas Hospital. Well,
hell, what did the end know? Steve? Look Parker coming out
of the door, down the hall. It's your apartment, all right?
Come on out on the street.Crime. Did you notice Parker didn't have
a book anymore? Yeah, comeon down the sidewalk away. Looks like
our little game or who's who isover? Steve. That's probably why Slader
(18:38):
struck up an acquaintance with Alice. He was trying to get a line on
her. Yeah, but that stilldoesn't tell me what that string with the
four nuts is all about. Lookthat comes Parker first car. Look can
you get a man to watch thisapartment house? Surest have him telling you
the minute that Alice leaves? Allright. Arc was turning around heading back
(19:00):
away. It came should we chelling? I'd like you to be in I'll
wait here until your man arrives. Then I'm heading for Senda Tmas Hospital whild
Hospital. Look, there was adynamite raid last night. It was probably
engineered by the boss of the operation. Right now, it looks like Alice
is the boss. I just rememberedsomeone at the hospital who can tell me
whether or not Alice was on dutylast night. So I head for Senda
(19:26):
Thomas. After walking around the groundsfor a few minute, I spot the
guy I'm looking for, Senyor Morales, the patient in the wheelchair. He's
sitting over there one of the fountains. Oh the noon Say you're mutual Isa.
That's right, Senor Morales. I'dassume you would like to talk to
Alice, but she is not onduty yet. A matter of fact,
I came here to talk to you, Senor Morales. Indeed, and hold
(19:48):
me. I saw you. IsAlice Gaines, your regular nurse. She
and I have never seen a betterone. She takes excellent care of me.
What hours duty hours from four inthe afternoon d midnight? How about
last night last night? What doyou mean? Was she on duty all
evening? Were? As far asI await, what is it? I
just remembered the entire early and lastnight they awoke about eleven thirty. I
(20:12):
called for Alice, but another nursecame Insteade. She told me Alice had
left early, complaining overheading. Isee, thank you, sending morals thanks
a lot I had for Parker's bar. Deana sitting outside in a radio car
in communication with his man who's watchingAlice's apartment so far as she hasn't budged,
(20:33):
and Dean tells me that Parker camestraight back to the bar. At
this point, I figured it's timeI paid a visit to Parker. I
find him in the back room.Hey, what's the big idea? You
and I are gonna have a talk, Parker dunk. I don't know you.
You will get out of here.Anna, I want to talk about
dynamite. Dynamite. Just leave thatgun word. Call me, Hey,
(20:56):
where's that dynamite? I don't knowthat. For press your memory any I'll
tell you I don't know. Okay, Buster, stop it, you have
nothing. Okay. I want youto take a look at this piece of
string with the four knots. Whatdoes it mean? Now? Look,
I'm telling you the truth. Inever saw that piece of string before in
my life. Okay, then tellme where all that dynamite is hidden.
(21:18):
I don't know that either. Allright, Parker, you're asking for another
one O club. You gotta believeme. I just run messages in the
organization, carried a warning to thebus. That's my job. But I
saw you delivered a little while agoin a book, wasn't it. Yeah,
but honest, I don't the dynamitegoing to be used for And don't
tell me you don't know that orall. Take it easy. Okay,
(21:38):
I can tell you about that.Yeah. Then a war, it's going
to be used for sabotage. It'salready planted around various places that I know,
but I don't know where. Andit's to be set off in the
event of war. Yeah. Anhour after the bus gives a signal signal,
what signal? Three skyrockets over PanamaCity. Red busts. I see.
Okay, Now, Steve, youmustn't be hard up for exercise.
(22:04):
Yeah, you better have this babyput on ice. Major. Ah,
my man just radio the Dallas Gainesleft her apartment and took a bus.
He told me which line we canpick it up my car. Okay,
let's go. I don't get it, Steve. Allas came right here to
the hospital with a book on herarm. Yeah. Now she's heading down
(22:26):
the path. Keep back. Idon't want to to spot us where she
stopped aside one of the patients.Hey, that's Senor Morales. She's handing
him the book. Yeah, comeon, man who said he was defended
your stop by. His name isParker. He wanted me to bring you
this book. It will be reallygood to you, my dear Augustia.
I'll take that book. Morales, meet you. Thanks. Now, let's
(22:48):
see what's in it. You betback? What's this all about? It's
like we had the wrong party, pig, Steve. Yeah, here we
are a note in the front ofthe book. You s aging aware of
your identity. Be careful like gagyou're pulling my girl paid off. It's
very clear though you'll meet you,but not clearly enough. See you.
Oh, I guess that gun makesyou the doctor instead of the patient.
Now you will all turn around andfacing the other direction. Its It won't
(23:11):
get very far Morales and he willtake my chances on the Let me warn
you the day I'm an excellent shot. If any of you turn around before
I am on the site, youor we killed than Wal. I didn't
even know he could walk, Yes, but I don't see how it can
get very far. He's pretty weak, and he prolonged exertion is liable to
kill him. Well, at leastthis explains why Slater got acquainted with Alice.
Here. You had a line onMorales and figured this would be a
good way to stay close to him. Wait, he's got a slight.
(23:33):
Now, come on after him.But Morales had done a good job at
dropping out of sight. We searchedthem higher grounds and surrounding area. But
he's gone. Major Dean puts outa radio bullet on him, and then
we head back to Dean's office. It's after dark when we get there.
(23:55):
I'm sure I feel a lot betterif we're had Morales and customers to you.
Oh all right, he must havebeen saving an escape plan for a
situation like this. All my boysand the National Police are alerted. Sooner
or later we've look up in thesky skyrockets. Yeah, three of them,
red burst, Steve, that's thesignal that you were telling me about.
Yeah, moralistic as he might aswell shoot the moon. Now that
(24:17):
he's been discovering, and Parker said, those charges are already planet. That's
right. You'll be exploded in onehour and we haven't the slightest idea of
where they are. All right,Steve, what are we gonna do?
That's twenty minutes going. We're notcloser to the answer. You have all
(24:38):
your units alerted by I'm in theradio communication with all of them. But
what goods that do? I don'tknow where to send them. Yeah,
we gotta figure out where that dynamitehas planted. But how Steve Blain pulled
ourselves and stick pins in a map? Trouble is there are so many defense
installations in this area you can't coverthem all. You can say that again.
Here, Look, here's where weare on the map. Ye.
(24:59):
I can take a pus with justa five mile radius and draw a circle.
Yeah, and in the area ofthat circle alone, there must be
fifty installations. Say nothing of acouple of the canal locks. They're over
here. They wait a minute, what is it? What did you just
do? What do you mean? What did I just do? I just
drew a circle? What about it? Yeah? The string ding the piece
of string? That's right? Dids later? I have a code map
(25:19):
like this. Sure, sure,I gave him one. He probably burned
it when he knew that they werecoming after him in his apartment, But
he figured out a way to tellus what he knew. Look, I
put one end of the string hereat headquarters, then I trace a circle
with the other end. Now,watch where those knots and the string fall
on the map. Are they passingover any installations? Whenever? Yeah,
one of the knots just passed overa canal lock, copied down the code
name. Okay, Another knot passedover a radar installation. I keep going.
(25:45):
Okay, let's see a third knotpasses over the powerhouse. The nearest
knot it just passes over a hill. Doesn't look like there's anything here,
but hey, there's a code nameon it. I wonder how he found
out about that. What are youtalking about, Steve. Hidden in the
side of that hill is the communicationcenter for the whole canal zone. Blow
that up in the entire area isparalyzed, right, Better, get word
(26:07):
to your unit. Tower attention, all units and security operation attention. You're
an able cover installation code name watchdog. You're in a baker take code name
gravy boat. You want a Charlietake code name sad sack report completion emission.
Okay, Steve. That takes careof the canal. Lock the radar
(26:30):
station in the powerhouse. We'll takethe communication center ourselves. Let's go.
Here's where we turn off highways. He he's at the hill up ahead of
(26:51):
us. Yeah, they've really donea job a cam apply, didn't they
front of me. Look there's ared light in the road of a hat
and a tail light. Yeah. He's stopping at the front of the hill.
Somebody's getting out, Steve. It'sMorales. Yeah, so he's doing
me honest personally at this location.Stop the car, Okay. I dive
out and start running after Morales. He's struggling up the hill toward a clump
(27:15):
of bushes, but he's weak andI'm gaining on him. He throws a
shot at me. It bounces outof a rock my left, and he
starts so the bushes again. He'sstaggering now, but he keeps going.
Then he stops, points his gunat the ground and pulls a tree just
as I jump him. Okay, drop that gun, see you okay,
yeah, oh brother Morales. Steveas he did. Yeah, Alice was
(27:38):
right when she said any exertion hadkilled him. But he couldn't even raise
his gun, just fired into theground. Huh. But at least he
lasted long enough to know that he'dlost out everybody. He couldn't have hung
on long enough to find out therest of his boys are picked up too.
Eh. Yeah, I got theradio report just after you jumped out
of the car. All three installationscovered seven suspects arrested. I'll dine in
(27:59):
my located it's really close. Butwhat's a manast? Hey? You do
you hear anything? No? No? What? Oh? Hey? You
know that shot? It wasn't anaccident. He hit a dynamite fuse.
Come on, why is it?I don't know? Hold on finding Oh
(28:26):
brother? Oh hey, look youknow where I can find a real cozy
spot around here? Cozy spot?War what four? So I can have
a nice quiet, nervous breakdown, move over, ill joining? Well,
one thing I'm grateful for anyway, what's Steve? But it isn't the fourth
of July. Why what do youmean if I'd have heard so much as
(28:48):
one firecracker go off? We wereshagging around after this dynamite I'd have gone
right up and smoke. Dangerous assignmentstarring Brian don Levy as Steve Mitchell when
(29:33):
her Butterfield as the Commissioner, iswritten by Bob Riot and Adrian John Bill,
with music by Robert Armbrewster, andis produced and directed by Bill Karne.
Others in the cast where Stacy Harris, Val Brown, Kay Stewart,
Byron Kane, Don Diamond and RaymondHartman be with us again next week at
this same time, when Brian donLevy, starring in the role of Steve
Mitchell, will embark on another dangerousassignment. Recent figures disclose that more Americans
(30:11):
have died on our highways than inall our wars. One main cause of
death on the highway is lack ofcourtesy. A good rule to observe is
that of America's friendly truck drivers.Courtesy and consideration to all motorists. Remember
the life you save, maybe yourown. Three chimes mean good Times.
(30:33):
On NBC. There's an hour anda half of the very best in music,
comedy, and drama tomorrow on TheBig Show when MC to Lula Bankhead's
guest list includes Judy Holiday, CarmenMiranda, Jimmy Durrandy Rex Harrison, and
many more. And there's another outstandingone hour production by Theater Guild on the
air also tomorrow. It's Tale ofTwo Cities starring Douglas Fairbanks. Now it's
(30:56):
The Man Called X on NBC WelcomeBack. Now. This is an interesting
setting because at the time of thisbroadcast and until the late seventies, the
(31:19):
Panama Canal Zone would be under thecontrol of the United States, and it
was and is a key point inUS shipping, and so you don't actually
have to get into anything exotic tocreate a threat at the canal zone.
(31:40):
A decent amount of dynamite could dosignificant damage to US trade and security interests.
So all you need is a bitof dynamite to make this a top
priority mission for Steve Mitchell. Ihad to chuckle a little bit at Stacy
as the major total losing it,because this isn't the only time I've heard
(32:06):
that performance. Because it's a littleknown fact that Stacy Harris and this is
no joke, actually played Batman. He was Batman on the radio, and
his distinctive to me, I willalways remember him as the Batman who just
totally freaked out and lost it.This was on the Superman radio program,
(32:30):
and the point was to make Supermanlook amazing. And I think that they
even had a scene where Superman hadto tell him, you know, get
the droll of yourself. Man.It's just such an amazing portrayal of Batman.
I couldn't help but remember it.The story itself was pretty good.
I think the solution to the mysterybecame obvious, but they managed to keep
(32:54):
building suspense by having all of thesethings happening. All of the twist in
the bad Guys plot also a nicelittle commercial for Mister and Missus Blandings,
which is also featured on the AmazingWorld of Radio in our summer series at

(35:15):
tell you you've got to do something. This isn't any scientific murder series.
There aren't any clues. All weknow is that three people were murdered by
the whistling killer. I no Markham, believe me. I understand the complications.
Undoubtedly. All three victims, Morrisseyand mister and Missus Daniel Stewart,
had been threatened and refused to pay. Why didn't they call me? What
good is being a district attorney ifpeople won't call on you for help?
(35:36):
By the same token, what goodis being a private investigator if there's nothing
to work once? I never heardyou talk that way? What else can
I do? There isn't a singleplace for me to begin working. What
do we know? Tell me?What do we know? Well? We
know the Stewart's butler heard someone whistle, then shots. He was on the
third floor. By the time hecame down to the library, mister Stewart
was dead, and Missus Stewart livedonly long enough to say that the killer
(35:58):
wanted one hundred thousand dollars. Wheredoes anybody go from there? What do
I do? Investigate the Butlers? No, he's been with the Stewarts for
years, absolutely beyond approach the Butler'sadvance. I know he's out, but
who's in? What do we dofor suspects? How do I find a
killer? Nobody living has ever seen? I hope you'll be with us then.
