Harald Bergstedt kommer hjem og opdager, at nogen har malet et blodrødt hagekors på hans hus. Han har skrevet ”Solen er så rød, mor”, ”Jeg ved en lærkerede” og ”Hør den lille stær”, men også en række artikler, hvor han har kaldt Hitler for en helt. Derfor bliver han arresteret af modstandsbevægelsen. Nu skal han argumentere for, at han intet ulovligt havde gjort og blot havde brugt sin ytringsfrihed. Men hvordan lever man med bitterheden, når man ikke får ret, men i stedet en fængselsdom og udstødelse fra det gode selskab? Og hvornår bliver det igen acceptabelt at synge sange skrevet af en nazist?
