We'll be discussing the psychological, the psychology of money, cultivating
a positive mindset. So let's welcome Stephanie Grosscha, the co
founder and president of GM Wealth Group. Stephanie, welcome to
my show. Oh thank you, Debbie, I'm so honored to
be here. Thank you for having me today. Oh I'm
(04:55):
so glad you decided to join us, So thank you. Now,
you know, in life, people have what are called core beliefs,
which are your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and many fests of
your life, whether it's business, health, or wealth, and they
do get mind blocks in these areas. What are the
psychological ariers that can compete people's focus and realizing their
(05:20):
money goals.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Well, there are some big ones. I think it all
starts back to your core beliefs. So if you think about,
you know, your childhood, all those things that you're told
or the things that you tell yourself, those things become
your belief Then first they become your thoughts, and then
they become your emotions, and then they become deep rooted beliefs.
(05:46):
And depending on what type of situation you may find
yourself in, you can face things like fear, like guilt
and stress, and when you add money into the equation,
those things can get exacerbated.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
They certainly can because money, I got to say, everybody
was probably was told this when their child. Money doesn't
grow on trees, right, and so you people are really
have a scarcity mindset when it comes to money, and
that's due to that that belief that their parents gave
(06:24):
and all reality, my my parents grew up the depression
time and they actually did really well. You know, my
father was an attorney and was also part of the
JAG Corps, and you know, he bought a home down
in California, Southern California, and my mom actually taught at
(06:47):
the really hill school system, so they were bringing quite
a bit of money in and that they did have
because of the way they grew up. That's where their
core police came from. Also, their health at least is
all yes, yes, yes. When someone has a scarce steam mindset,
(07:10):
how do you navigate them?
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Well, I think, and I have to tell you I
did not grow up with a money tree in my backyard.
I will say that I did grow up in a
you know, an upper middle class family that had, you know,
very solid values much like your own. And I think that,
you know, I have the benefit of, you know, a
(07:33):
really strong, supportive father who would tell me things like,
you know, always finish what you start, and always say
what you mean, and you know, things like that pay
yourself first. And all of those values got instilled in me.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
As a child.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
And I think that sometimes when we overlook all of
those values that we grew up with and we get
caught up in the day to day, we can get
caught up with you know, we receive news today quickly,
much more quickly than we used to even ten and
twenty years ago, so you can get swept up into
(08:12):
this range of emotions and find yourself in a situation
where you know your thoughts create lack and limit.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
So what you have to do is find a way
to reframe those beliefs nice and it's really important. I'd
like to say that.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
Sometimes when you have a fear of the own the unknown,
for example, have reframe that thought and think, well, I
don't know what's going to happen next, but I look
forward to see what comes my way.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
It's a reframing of a negative thought exactly, and that's
why positivity is such so needed. You know, people look
at me during the times when we were locked down,
I was always running. I never stayed in the house.
I don't remember. As you know, I do half marathons,
(09:07):
I run five miles a day or yeah. And at
first it's like people were just like, don't well, look
at you. So I was like hello, and that made
him smile. Yeah, you know, And I can tell by
the eyes they were smiling if they were wearing a mask,
which I thought was okay, you can wear a mask.
(09:29):
But you know, it's really funny and I think I
told the story before a lot of people were walking
their dog and the doct didn't understand what was going on.
They're happy at a looking getting all this blocking treatment.
But my whole point is is that I was I
always did something called happy Runner chests after one day
(09:50):
a week before my run, and one of these, you know,
I was just very optimistic. I said, this is not
going to lasts forever. We're going to get back to
where we need to get back at and all this
stuff stuff. I don't know if you know Victor Frankel, Yeah,
so you know, he went through a really bad war,
a Nazi can concentration prisoner, So that's really horrible, right right,
(10:17):
But you know, that's my whole point. As I mentioned him,
you know once, and I mentioned all this other stuff,
and my happy runner chat became this uplifting, optimistic thing
and people or you know, and people are really enjoying it,
and you actually that that optimistic and positivity is what's
going to get you through life.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Totally agree, Totally agree, And I tell my clients this
all the time. It's not what holds you back, is
not who you are, it's who you believe You're not true.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Very true, and people are meant to grow and learn, right,
and they can grow like a tree grows in you, Lenn,
they can just become, you know, something a little different
and also be very profitable as well as you know,
you know, bringing and helping a lot of people productive.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
Somebody.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
I was talking to somebody yesterday and she's like, you know,
I stay at home mom, and she's awfully obviously not
very happy about it. And I felt way sad for her, because, yeah,
I understand those times. I was there too, but I
focused on my son. But I always had a side
gig to keep my creative flow going. And that is possible.
(11:37):
That really is possible. Absolutely it is. Yeah, so you know,
having multiple streams of income is important, so absolutely it is.
Absolutely it is. Now understanding my client's mindsets gives me
clues to how to approach them regarding health. What strands
did you use when you're talking to somebody or or
(11:59):
helping them examine their own mindset?
Speaker 3 (12:02):
I'll tell you I've been doing this a long time, Debbie.
I've been helping people manage wealth and to meet their
goals for twenty four years now. So I've developed a
strategy over time and understanding what people's goals are and
how they need them. And I first start with I
(12:23):
want to understand what their financial health is currently. And
I think that's very important because it's not about how
much money you earn or how much money you save.
It's a combination of many things, including strategies to get
you to the next level.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
But you also have to be willing to do the work.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
And I think that it's important not only to have
that positive belief we were talking about just a few
minutes ago, but you have to be willing to put
in the work to get yourself to that place that
you call your goal or your successful place.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
And what does that look like.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Well, I'll give you an example of some famous people
that we probably all know and the things that they
do what we call solidifying their beliefs or doing the work.
Everybody knows who Warren Buffett is.
Speaker 5 (13:21):
Yes, Well, this man reads five to six hours a day,
I know, and he always.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Says knowledge pays the best interest, right. Yes, he wants
to be constantly learning and evolving. That is so important
because you don't want to stagnate in your life in
terms of your health or your wealth, right, So it's
important to continue to do those things to create that
(13:53):
future for yourself. I'll give you another example. The Gold
medal gymnasts Biles. Okay, you've probably seen some interviews with her,
and she's talked about her mental health and how important
that is to her. And she went through a period
during the Olympics where she couldn't get some of her
(14:16):
moves right. Okay, and the whole idea is repetition. So
she went back and she's like, I'm just going to
focus on doing the same thing over and over and
over until I get it right. Because we know that
repetition strengthens and confirms right. It's like building a muscle.
(14:39):
That's right, that's right, And then over time you developed
this skill set, you become a master at them. So
and without really even having to think about it.
Speaker 4 (14:51):
True.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Right, So when it just becomes part of your daily habits,
then it's something that you just do and you don't
have to think about anymore.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
That's right, true, Because I do instill healthy habits with people,
and if those habits don't work, I modify them to
something that does work, because that's the only way you
can really establish a new lifestyle. That's pretty much why
I do is I help people establish a new lifestyle.
When it comes to the mindset or the eating or
(15:20):
the you know, health organization. And the first we need
to look at what the core plies are to see
what we need to navigate around or try to help
them release them. But the healthy habits for me, as
as you heard, I just established I'm going to well,
I guesson. I established that with walking four to five
(15:42):
days a week. And when I all of a sudden
didn't have foot pain and became ease into running and
I actually did it, and I was like, ah, and
it was amazing. It was like doing something I was
never able to do my whole life. That is amazing. Yeah,
And that made me feel so good because I was
given a label. So my whole point is there's always possibility,
(16:04):
and you need to be open to possibilities when it
has to help business or wealth. There's always possibilities and
everything is bigger edible. Yes it is. It is, and
you just need to you know, and some things you
know and we'll talk about a little bit you need
(16:27):
to modify as you go along. My point is that
this is how we grow and learn. And when you
read or listen to podcasts or even listen to audio books,
you're learning new concepts. They stack in your mind. You're like, ahuh,
they add clarity and they motivate you to be a
(16:47):
different person and do different things. Absolutely, and that's exactly
what you were talking about with wealth. Absolutely.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
And it's interesting because you know, we deal with all
kinds of people and we've got I mean, we're based
in Dallas, Texas, but we have clients all over the country.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
We see people come in our offices or we see
them on teams in Zoom and other types of virtual meetings,
and you know, we hear things like I'm so afraid
I don't know what to do, I'm so stressed out
that I'm worried that this is going to affect my
financial health, I am so ashamed that I'm this successful
(17:28):
and I don't even know how I got here, or
you know, you hear all kinds of things, and we
help people to reframe all of those thoughts into more
positive emotions because remember, like I said, what holds you
back is not who you are, it's who you believe.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
You're not right exactly. And when you are on the
negative emotions, like I said before that, oh you down
and get you stuck, but you're also activating sympathetic, nervous,
system where you freeze, run, fight and you can also
you know fight. My whole point is is that you're
(18:08):
not thinking clearly during these times. Your emotions kind of
cloud you're thinking as well as you know, they slow
you down and really you need to be more proactive
and they get these passive reframing panels situation and sometimes
you're given a situation that you didn't quite expect, like wow,
(18:30):
where did that come from? And that person is having
an issue and made me misinterpreted what you said. And
sometimes it's not you, it's that whatever one in that
person's mind. Also, like I said at the beginning, gosh,
we can't control what's going on out there in the
world in control how respond to it. That's absolutely correct.
(18:53):
And when people are saying, I'm you know, I'm anxious,
I'm frozen, I don't know what to do, and I'm
sure that was happening during those times we were in
the lockdown and all reality. People were very uncertain. They
don't know what to tear the typeeter. But you give
yourself out of that boggy mindset and start thinking out
(19:15):
of the box. There's possibilities to work around things.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
That's right, that's right. Even in the world that we
live in today with all the uncertainty that is surrounding us.
Even now, there's opportunity and uncertainty. Just like you said,
it's not about the situation, it's how you receive it
and then how you respond to yes.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
And even though things are uncertain, it is so it
gives you so much growth potential, so much to build
that muscle, so much. Oh, I can I can run now,
that's right, that's right, and things like that. So now
when it comes to goals, I use smart goals, which
(20:03):
are civic, measurable and achievable and revalent and timely. Could
you quickly we talked about refumbing a lot, can you
talk about how you help people set clear, achievable wealth
goals with your clients.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
Absolutely, that starts with understanding where they are today. We
want to meet our clients where they are today and
then understanding where it is they want to be tomorrow,
and then we have to help them to fill the gap. Okay,
And so we don't want to create a plan that's overwhelming.
(20:37):
We want to start with what I call many many
steps and will celebrate those achievements along the way.
Speaker 4 (20:47):
So much like me and I think that's.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Important because you don't want to say, okay, well check
the box, moving on. I think you should celebrate those
mini successes along the way because I think it makes
the achievement of the final goal.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
Even more meaningful. Once you've achieved it, it makes them
recognize it more. And sometimes when we set up these
smart goals, these specific measurable achievement equivalent timing goals, it's
something that you were projecting at that time. Maybe it
became not really that achievable and you need to modify
(21:28):
them exactly what you expect. So that's why variety and
changing things and reviewing is so important. Yes, since that
came up, how often do you review things with your
clients in a year? You know, it.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
Depends on the situation and that would apply to an
individual client. But on a typical basis, we'll have formal
meetings with clients once per year, but we review regularly
and behind the scenes the work that we're doing. That's
more of a monthly but we have formal meetings on
(22:06):
an annual basis. Okay, yeah, I for some people that
I've worked with, I would have preferred to they, you know,
actually talk to me a little bit more that it's
just the way that you know things go these days, and.
Speaker 4 (22:21):
Tell you the truth that there's nothing earth chattering going on,
chattering chattering, there's probably nothing to really say, you know,
everything is going well as planned and reviewing things and
seeing how productive you are and tell you the truth.
(22:41):
You're going to get statements in the mail too, absolutely,
and that's going to give you some idea what's going
on as well. Yes, but if you have questions, I'm
sure your clients are welcome to call you right. Oh.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
Absolutely. I call it an open door policy. You can
call me anytime you want and I'll be happy to
talk with you about anything you like.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
So they had an idea about changing something because they
heard about something, they just call you. Yeah, absolutely, okay, cool. Cool.
Now with with with reframing, you know, and what exactly
is we talked about certain other things about reframing. The
(23:24):
one thing I do with people is I help them
pivot or accept their pivot when they have to make
changes when changes arise. And I did that a lot
during that lockdown. But you know, what are some things
that you have people either reframe or pivot or think
about or do you kind of just spoom feed an
idea to them.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
Well, I like to look at my relationships with a
client is just that it's a relationship and a journey,
not a transaction.
Speaker 4 (23:54):
So I think that it's more of a collaborative effort.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
So we have communication on a regular basis to talk
about specific things and ideas. So if a client brings
something to me, I'll certainly look at it and then
we'll discuss if if that fits.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
Within their plan or not.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
But in terms of reframing, you know some of the
conversations that we have with people, and you know a
lot of people are afraid to make mistakes, but you know,
mistakes are just life's education, right, So everybody is going
to make mistakes, and we can't get caught up on
(24:36):
oh that happened and I missed that, or you know,
you have to look at it as what did I
learn from this and how can I use that information
to improve?
Speaker 4 (24:46):
Very true, especially when it's coming to managing and learning
to for the client themselves to manage they spend and
finding out, oh I just this, I've made this big mistake.
You know, we're only human, Yes, who makes mistakes with
garding health too, and you never know when you have
(25:09):
a freak accident like I broke my foot. I mean,
you just never know. And that's why it's nice to
have some kind of you know, backup plan or some
nest egg to rely on. And you know, perfectionism is
a way that really brings people down emotionally. And like
(25:30):
you said, Noah's perfect and even though you've made a mistake,
we can learn from it and you can become that
better person, right person that stuck into this, you know,
being perfect right, because everybody, as we said obviously over
and over again, we need to grow and learn. Yes,
(25:53):
But like an artist who's carving something, think of someone
chooseling a artwork for a wedding and he says, I
need to get I need to get this perfect. I
need to get its perfect, I'll saying. He hits it
and it's chattered. Yes, yes, And so that's why you
know you want to you know, be aware, Oh this
(26:16):
looks really good. And if you want to revisit it
painting or whatever you did, and you're not going to
make it shatter, but of course ice sculpture, you will.
You don't have to start over again.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
That's true, and I think it's the Japanese art farm Katsuki,
I believe is the name of it, where you see,
for example, a bowl that was made and it had
a crack or it was broken, and they fill that
with gold because they want to.
Speaker 4 (26:45):
Remember those imperfections in life.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
Right, So you think about, let's celebrate those imperfections. Let's
celebrate those mistakes because they can help guide us to
more education and evolving even you know, just moving our
compass just slightly one way or the other so that
we get where we want to be. But without those things,
(27:11):
we have no experience, right, and life is really about experience.
Speaker 4 (27:17):
Yes, it is really about experience. And the younger set.
I have somebody that's younger, you know, they think I
do this now. I didn't get this done in the
now time, And I'm like, who would go with the flow?
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (27:35):
I mean, and even when you have children, your life
gets diverted a lot of that, But it doesn't mean
it's your purpose in life right now. You need to
do X, Y and Z, whether you're taking care. I
was part of a generation where I had to take
care of my mom who had He had a lot
of therapies when he was younger, and it was you know,
(28:00):
I felt like I was being pulled in so many
different directions time for me to take care of them.
And if I didn't do that, my son would be
the way he is today. And but like I said,
I always had a side drop. I always had a
side you know, craft or something I like to do.
I'm very artsy. For artsy, I do mixed media, I
(28:22):
do digital scrapping. I do a whole bunch of different things.
That's amazing. That's amazing, And you know, I even I've
been that way my whole entire life. I when I
was a child, it's gonna be funny. I actually we
had a I don't know, it was fifth grade when
we studied the Civil War. I actually made I took
(28:44):
Gone with the Wound. I made puppets and a script
and a puppet stand and had backdrops and I performed
it with all I got it a and that puppet
stand ended up in the beginning current room. For that's
quoll because we don't do my ticket back. And that's
my whole point. I always thought out of the box.
(29:07):
And when it comes to wealth, how do you think
out of the box?
Speaker 3 (29:11):
Oh? In many ways, And I think that yet again,
it's per the individual, because everything that we do is
very customized to a client.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
Yes, I will say this.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
I think that a lot of people just think that everything.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
We do is just stocks and bonds and that's that.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
You know, you have an acid allocation that applies to
your risk tolerance, and that's all we need to know.
Speaker 4 (29:36):
It's so much bigger than that. We want to understand
you as a person. And I think that's very out
of the box.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
Yes, understand like what your purpose is because your money
needs to help.
Speaker 4 (29:52):
You fulfill that purpose. Yes. I think that's also very
out of the box. Yes, it is.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
We look at things from the whole person and not
just a piece. Yes, And of course we want you
to have a very healthy relationship with your money, but
all those things go into that, they're all pieces of
the pie.
Speaker 4 (30:15):
Yes. Yes. Robersakhazaki had a game. I forgot the name
of the game, but it was kind of like Monopoly
for money, Yes, and I had that. It was the
kids game. I played it with my son, and I
think that really install some values with money. Yes, kids
(30:37):
and younger adults and things like that are not taught.
And tell you the truth, I wasn't taught other than
balance of the checkbook about strategies of money, and it
was and and tell you the truth, you know, my
parents didn't really invest you because because of that scarcity
(30:57):
mindset A we have the depression or make it I
doesn't have all this information to work with.
Speaker 5 (31:04):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (31:05):
But it's so important to be open to different ideas,
different solutions that fitit individual. Yes, just like it is
for health. You know, you never know when something goes
awry and you need an alternative solution to get you
over it as have your mind open to it and
(31:27):
try it, and also to be patient. Just like money,
it takes time, so it does health. You have truly
as of cells, yes, and you need a repair of
seals over time.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Right.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
And I'm sure it's the sex same thing with wealth.
Absolutely it is.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
I look at it as a journey and you continue
to take steps throughout your wealth building journey throughout your life.
I never look at it as Okay, we've done one
thing and we're done.
Speaker 4 (31:56):
It's never going to be like that.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
It does take time and patience, and you know, you've
got to keep putting effort into it. Like I said before,
you've got to do the work. You've got to continue
to put the effort into it to be able to
make the goals you set for yourself so important.
Speaker 4 (32:14):
And like we said before, for health, there's going to
be areas like, Okay, this isn't quite work. Let's see
what we can. I have other solutions. I just don't
have one. Change that up to be something else that
maybe this person is more into doing those competitive tests
in that area. I'm sure it's the sact same thing
for wealth.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
It's absolutely the same thing you think about when you
know the situation that we're in now, where things are uncertain,
things are volatile. That is really kind of it makes
My point is that this is a journey. This is
a long term goal that we're after here. It's going
to take repetitive tasks over and over and over to
(32:58):
meet that. And you can't worry about the noise right now. Yes,
you have to focus on the purpose and the future.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
Yeah. And I call noise inflammation THEO or you know
those thoughts trillions of trillions, but thousands of thoughts, seventy
thousand thoughts a day, that's noise too. That you got
to stop listening to that chatter. So I was going
to go somewhere, But that thought just went out the window.
(33:33):
But anyways, is there anything else you're want to say
for a few minutes about your services and what you
are can say to do that? Yes?
Speaker 3 (33:43):

and that we offer a holistic view of a person's wealth.

the whole gamut. We will call ourselves a full service

was you know, I provide education to my clients too.

manage your wealth brings down your stress? Yes? And are
there any books you can recommend people do? Oh gosh,
there's so many. That was a tough question. I have
(35:00):
to think about that for a second. I think about that.
I really, I didn't mean to stump you. That's okay,
that's okay. It might be something that more on Buffet.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
Wrote or oh yeah, I mean he's written many books.
There's books on, you know, how to educate yourself in
terms of valuing securities. There's I'm trying to think of
a couple of titles that's okay, went out too, But
there are lots of books out there. Even just The
(35:30):
Millionaire next Door is one that kind of comes to mind,
and it talks about, you know, saving and investing and
how important it is to do that on a regular basis.
And you might be surprised who your millionaire next door is.
But that's that's one of my favorite books. It's been
around forever.
Speaker 4 (35:51):

I just wanted to leave you with this, is that
wealth isn't just about money. It's deeply rooted in our behaviors,
in our belief Yes. Greatest assets really are your beliefs,
yes right, yes, And your greatest prospects are the ones
that you create, yes right. So your beliefs create your habits,
(44:01):
and your habits.
Speaker 4 (44:02):
Form your future. Yes. And it boils down to health
as well. Absolutely. And if you believe something is h
A r D, it's going to be h A r D.
That's right. But really making these changes in small increments
(44:22):
is not that hard, and you'll find it that it
will flow, and you'll find it that whow why didn't
I do this long ago? Which just becomes you know,
in the same aspect with you know, your beliefs, your feelings,
and your emotions and your thoughts, and it sounds like
you would be just like me. You you help people
recognize where these thoughts and believes emotions are coming from
(44:45):
and help them to release them as best as they can.
And it's going to make a person healthier and wealthier.
And I truly hope you believe. I believe it's important
to have your health and your wealth because when you're unhealthy,
it kind of wraps your wealth. Yes, yes, yeah, do
(45:08):
you have any other thing you want to say? And
then I got a wrap it.
