(00:09):
It's FM. I know, newyear, new frequency. K X nine
three five, growing up, blossoming, expanding and blooming like a rose.
One O four seven is our destination. Will it be our finality? Only
time will tell, but it's anexciting development in the history of this little

(00:31):
radio station. Good evening and welcometo two thousand and twenty. My name
is Jonathan, and you are listeningto Deep Cuts where every Thursday, I
should say most Thursdays, we sharefor you some of the finest vinyl that
Laguna Beach has to offer here onthe little station that could from the corner
of Pearl Street in the Pacific CoastHighway in beautiful downtown scenic Laguna Beach,

(00:57):
California. So if you're listening locally, thank you, thank you for your
continued support of our little station. If you're listening from abroad wherever you may
find yourself, thank you very much. It's a new decade, but same
old KXFM. We're just doing ourthing, bringing local, listener supported,

(01:22):
human crafted radio and podcasts to themasses. In this evening will be no
different. Tonight, I'm faced witha very challenging task of trying to make
a short list of my favorite recordsfrom the last entire decade. For those
that are not familiar with decade, that is ten years. It's many years,
more than two, certainly twice asmany as five, but not as

(01:47):
much as some other amounts. Butyou know, it is a lot of
time to cover, right It's likethree thousand, six hundred and fifty days,
and there's a lot of music thathas been released in that time,
across so many genres. Some aregood, some are bad, some are
great summer epic, some are likelegendary, some are genre defining, others

(02:08):
maybe a glossed over them. Butyou know, I'm no expert. I'm
just a guy that likes music andseems to have a compulsive desire to hoard
it in the form of vinyl. So all I can really do is share
with you the stuff that I liked, the things that I enjoyed, and
I think you might too. SoI took some time and I dug through

(02:30):
the shelves and I pulled out apretty significant stack of vinyl. Here.
It's a couple of bags worth, and I hope that you'll enjoy listening to
some of it here with me thisevening as we kick off one of the
first shows of the new year hereon KX ninety three five. So we're
going to start things off with analbum that was released right at the beginning

(02:51):
of the decade in two ten.It was this sophomore release from a band
that's gone on to do many greatthings this decade, Vampire Weekend, and
the album is Contra. So we'regonna go ahead and spin up the B
side here on CACKS ninety three five. You can of sweat all the ocean

(03:23):
floor. They're gonna fight if youdidn't go the darn you and smile was
sit outside of the side and ahouse on a street they wouldn't barker.
The night before there single was Shoemakeryou mad Sis two thousand sick little list
makers, we didn't come, oryou bore the figgers and you're gonna eat

(03:53):
inting gos. I discover myself. If you are stream, you chosing my
health. And if Nat said coachesshould be lining the balls when you both
roads interest, you can just foodout. Me and my cousins and you
and your cousins. It's a limestar always running and my cousins and you
and your cousin. I can feelit coming. You can show you back

(04:27):
on the biddle. You can showyou back on the biddu. You can
turn you back on the bidd old. You can show you back on the
dude. Me and my cousins, and you and your cousins. It's a
lime, the star always running meand my cousins, and you and your
cousins. I can feel it coming. He and my cousins, and you

(04:49):
and your cousins. It's a lime, the star always running me and my
cousins, and you and your cousin. I can feel it coming. You're

(05:46):
so thrown old, rusty funneath therise sun. It's like the black trophy
for getting all the things time andmoment. It's been a long time.
You right back where you start from. I see it in your eyes,

(06:10):
and now you're giving up the gun. When I was seventeen iders like Steve,
and I felt complete. And nowmy body face to be on a
pressurade and a my sleetly put intochant remains to see those better days.

(06:31):
I come again down. My earsare brought to bits from all the revelets.
It was still a grave that time, your souls thrown on and rusty,
but beneath the rise of sun. It's likecked up, like a trophy

(06:54):
getting all the things started in moment. It's been a long time. You
right back where you started from.I see it in your eyes, and
now you're giving up the g eto play guitar down by the city bar

(07:15):
with skin as you used to fire, and you took a guy with my
garb star used to save the night. You've had the come away. You
don't give it over break. Yousaid you would please, but it is
a badge. Since I saw yourlass, you have moved n your souls

(07:41):
grown old and rusty, but beneaththe rising sun it's locked up like trophy
forgetting all the things star and more. It's been a long time you right
back whey started from. I seeit in your eyes, and now you're

(08:05):
giving up the I see you shine, you ain't gone gone. I see

(08:46):
it shine you ain't gone gone.I see you shine, you ain't gone
gone. I see it shine awaygone. I see shine your gone.

(09:13):
I see you shine, your gonegone. Your sons old, rusty,

(09:37):
nat the ras sun. It's likethe black trophy, getting all the things
star and lost. It's been along time you right back where you start
come. I see it in youreyes, your time, any time it's

(10:35):
not right, but it's now nevera way could ever forgive my sad all
night when the moon goes yellow inthe rip time with the lie from the

(11:07):
TV's buzz I love because I'm gonnagot a where I can and then I'm
gonna take a behind the fire.Had the chances now then, but I'd
feeling I'll get on that to afree to you would be cruel. We're

(11:33):
not. All I want to dois use use. He was a diplomat.
Size use any one. He wasa diplomat. Side use anyone.

(12:07):
Just wild dokis in the kitchen Icould sleep, lay and the side sitting

(12:33):
in the bathtime. Let me knowthat she loved closed here because I'm gonna
take it from Simon's and then I'mgonna take it behind them. About the

(12:54):
chances now then, but I've neverhad a feeling I could offer that to
you to a free to be crudeturned at us. It was it was

(13:18):
snus. I said, I'm notdoing this is I can't go. It's

(13:54):
good. I spoke to Joe withmy husband. We found a cisen now
believed he was mess. It waseveryone he was the last it was any
one looking outscoring all around me Ican't feel, and the traces of side

(15:41):
of the trace in the dark whenthe wind comes risen off the river's kindomatic.

(16:11):
You know, that's such a seamlessrecord, and it's so well produced
and it flows so nicely together thatsometimes I think songs are like done before
they're actually done. You ever havethat happen to you when you're listening to
a record where you just get socaught up in it and you kind of
think, like, maybe I'll listento this one track, but then it

(16:32):
becomes two, and then it becomesthree, and then it becomes an entire
side, and then you're like, well that as well, flip it over
right and just listen to the restof it. And that, to me,
I think is the beauty of reallyhaving a record in like a vinyl
format is it does draw you inbecause the artist, guess what has designed
it to do exactly that. They'reseducing you, man, They're luring you

(17:00):
in right song by song, trackby track, and the Vampire Weekend is
no nothing different. I mean, they know exactly what they're dealing with.
Those catchy hooks and those silky smoothlyrics. I hope you enjoyed that track
and series of tracks off of Contra, released in two thousand and ten by

(17:22):
the Manhattan band Vampire Weekend. Theirsound has been described as described as Upper
West Side Soweto, so a littlebit of that kind of African rhythm,
maybe a little Paul Simon Greece Landmixed in with some punk fantastic stuff.
Of course, you have, youknow, some some exits from the band

(17:45):
in the latter half of the decade, Rostam by Moglia. If I'm pronouncing
that, probably not pronouncing that right, but you know, he kind of
did his own thing, came outwith a great solo album. Of course,
Ezra and the rest of the gangcontin hinue to tour and produce fantastic
music like Modern Vampires of the Cityand Father of the Bride and you know

(18:07):
who had ever comes next? Butthat was Contra, and I think one
of their finest efforts, you know, if I may say so. So
we're gonna go ahead and we're gonnapick something next from the pile. We
have a little team Impula Currents releasedin two thy fifteen, So I'm gonna
get that loaded up here momentarily, but while I do, treat yourself to

(18:32):
a special you know, digital filehere the Suburbs by Arcade of Fire.
This is a fantastic record, andthis is the title track off of it.
So I'll spend this up for youhere, well not really, but
you know, I'll click play onthe computer and you can enjoy that while
I change the record over. Sothanks so much for listening to kx FM

(18:56):

I've been saying k X ninety threefive for so many years now, but
that's right, we are becoming kX one oh four seven. So make
sure that you adjust your presets, you change a couple of things. See,
you stay with us when at theend of the month we make that
official change, we take that nextstep in our evolution, in our journey,

(19:21):
and you come right along with ushere, So stick around plenty more
music where that came from here onkx FM. No tell me the mother

(20:00):
skemes will leave it. You wantsome shoot, So one day we fighting
and grilling war. You're far thetime, guess mons, you're standing on

(20:27):
the opposite shore. By the timethe first balls, feel we wore red
little more we reading read. SometimesI can't believe I'm moving as the feeling.

(20:52):
Sometimes I can't believe it I'm movingfeeling in again, smoke me so

(21:14):
my jeans were scream of the running. I knows that the build and the
seven is far of the fall inall the house is the build and the
seven is far of the fall,All in the fav all in the bild.

(21:41):
Sometimes I more than the feeling.Sometimes I can't feeling. To my
line, she understand, oh daughter, while I'm still young, won't hold

(22:26):
her hand, shows the beauty beforethis damage is done. Too must days
too much today to send me songsPolton, it's all so more. You

(23:00):
feel the pave led to the crowdsbecause so well when it comes to so
D D. Sometimes I'm molding.That's the feeling. Sometimes I'm mos feeling

(23:26):
against missus. Missus, you're listeningto k x FM. This is our

(25:07):
favorite albums the last decade, atleast mine here on Deep Cunts Dam and
Paula Currens it only because it feelslike this is they go. But I

(26:25):
know that I'll be happy, andI know you won't to said I'm not
that I'll be happy and I knowyou won't to invention. Invention. Wish

(27:22):
I could come back into the strangebecause I was dead change. But I

(27:48):
know that I'll be happy and Iknow you will to. So I know
that I'll be happy, Yeah, and I know you will to effacing the

(28:14):
fact, and I know I justwant I'm going to do and it's going
to be because I'm not and Iknow you will. Suffec afec she that

(31:29):
right there is the sound of surfacenoise. And as the legendary John Peel
always said, you know, mate, life as surface noise, And isn't
that the truth. I don't knowabout you, but you know, since
we've had the turning of a newdecade, it's created an opportunity for reflection,
a moment to pause and take alittle bit of inventory of how things

(31:52):
been going over the last ten freakingyears, because you know, I don't
know about you, but it seemslike ten years is kind of a good
block of time, right. Ifyou think about when you started off this
decade in two thousand and ten, what was your life like, Who were

(32:12):
your friends, who were you talkingto, who were you hanging with?
What type of music were you listeningto? Where were you living, what
was your job, What were yourfavorite things? What kind of entertainment films,
television, what have you were youfilling your time with? Were you
listening to podcasts? I don't know, maybe not, probably not. I

(32:36):
tell you one, I listen toa lot of podcasts now, and those
were certainly of this decade type ofthing. Think about how much we've seen
in two thousand and ten to twothousand nineteen. It's a lot. It's
a lot of stuff, and alot of fantastic music. And you know,

(32:58):
we are not terribly presumed she washere at KX ninety three five,
soon to be KX one oh fourseven. So something tells me we'll have
to change the sign hanging off theside of the building here on the Pacific
Coast Highway in beautiful downtown Laguna Beach. But you know, change sometimes is

(33:20):
good. It's always still change, but it's still you know, it's still
good, right even when it's not. It's good. It just may not
seem that way sometimes, but I'vefound that to be true. I don't
know, maybe you have as well. In any case, what we're looking
to do here this evening between thetime of her read of six until eight

(33:44):
pm is playing for you some ofour favorite vinyl of the decade, some
of our favorite artists you know, and of course our favorite medium. We
have a fat stack of wax tostill go through here on KX ninety three
five on Deep Cuts, I amyour host, Jonathan. I'll be with
you until eight o'clock. So sitback, relax, hang out. We

(34:07):

to a little Jim James. Hereleased his first self solo album, I
should Say in twenty thirteen, andI'll tell you a little bit more about
that after this song right here byThe Chromatics off their album Kill for Love.
This is a cover of a classicNeil Young song reimagined by Johnny Jewell

(34:31):
in his Fantastic group called you KnowInto the Black Enjoy here on Chaos soon

(35:25):

(35:58):
Out of the gun, into theblack. They give you this,
but you paid for that. Onceyou're gone, you can let it come

(36:20):
back. When you're out of theplane. Into the black. He is

(37:08):
gone, but he's not forgot. This is the story of John Iron.
It's better to bur than it isto run. He is gone, but

(37:37):
he's not forgot. My mind rockand never die, wart to the big

(38:14):

(40:45):
How far we'll reach a No,But I know when the dun breaks,

(41:07):

(41:36):

(41:57):

(43:14):
Now you can feel it, eche building like little birds, just building
up me. And you build itup strong, and you fill it up

(43:42):

see a sweet in me and loveme. See to learn that's the way

(49:27):

(50:21):
You're so prolific and such an amazingtalented artist and unique voice, and I'm

(51:27):
rolling down the track here nice andsmooth as we creep into the seven o'clock
hour. Divine you five vines ofwomen and wine in search of the gentleman

(52:00):
kind. You can get full bythe root of the mind, where your
strengths lead you to great lakes ofweakness, Where with tyrants you wash your
hands that they stole from the bandof chieftains, where admirers turned guns for
hire. They shrug as you becomevictims of friendly fire. To take a

(52:20):
look at all these staves and lyresand asks is what for the world it
was truly desired. Just who brokeinto wax Reysham and Gati's face a stage
at the coliseum. They won't meltunder the Hollywood lights, the West Texas
summer sun, where the pastor isplastic, on the podium where he smiles

(52:42):
with his mouth and not with hiseyes, where you know, deep down
inside it's something's not right, likea man killing the mother of his son
cleaning a shotgun. I can't killthe truth of the elephant in the room,
can't hush the thoughts because they singlike a cop ex gloom where everybody
knows but nobody's talking. Requires humanityor concealed and condoned by self reservation and

(53:07):
biblical prophecy, because it ain't coolto be you over here or over yonder.
Currency is a commodity you pay dearlyfor your honyesty. It's the truth
set you free. There's a mutewith the key and the goose that lays
the golden egg got cooked for thegrease duck, comfy serio. I'm giving

(54:08):
you what I call call you.I was he, I want you drive
to throw the life down the hillheart, tell your fear, I don't

(54:34):
want you hear I live only evilwhere as dark, but I have no
fare. Jesus tucky to like you'restill save. Do something decide Jesus space

(55:23):
tucky to just like you're still save, even you like call call on you.
I was he I want you driveto from the life o the hill

(55:52):
my heart time tell you I don'twant you are. I have only evil
where dark, but I have nofire. There's something inside Jeeves et Ember

(56:22):
two space. They're ducking to Lachiflife, but you're still the safe.
There's something inside Jeeves Examber two space. They're ducking to Lachif life, but

(56:53):
you're still the same. There's somethinginside you. There's something inside you.
It's hard to explain. It's hardto explain. They're talking about you like

(57:15):
you're still the same you. Guysall know I'm a big fan of soundtracks,

(58:05):
you know, and this, uh, this is a beautiful soundtrack.
I think it's one of the bestbe released in the last decades. It
was the only soundtrack that I chose. I was released in two eleven to
accompany the film starring Ryan Gosling, directed by Nicholas winding ruffin It's drive primarily
influenced by the sound of Johnny Jewel, the chromatics, and others of that

(58:28):
whole it Taalo disco genre. Ihope you enjoy it here on k X
soon to be one four seven.I don't see I don't I don't see

(59:42):
you. Places happens all the time, Present company, accept the present company
except the worst. It happens everynight, Present company excluded every time.

(01:00:10):
A present company the best that youcan fund. Talking like a jerk,
except you are an actual jerk andliving truth. But sometimes friends are mean.
Present company expected, Present company justlaugh it off. It's better than

(01:00:37):
it seems. Present company excluded inevery way. Present company makes me want

(01:00:58):
to stay. Killing it with closeinspection, killing it can only make it

(01:01:24):
worse, sort of makes it breathePresent company accepting presently. We all expect
the worst. It works just likeme. You're listening to Kaox three five,

(01:01:45):
but seem to be one O fourseven. This is deep Cuts.
We're playing some more of her favoritesfrom the last decade. This is Zerrillas,
nature read, some kind of soul, some kind of mixture, some
kind of gold, some kind ofmajesty, some chemical, some kind of

(01:02:14):
metal made up from blue, somekind of plastic I could wrap around.
You can need to eat manmade. They wear forny clothes. They sit with
a group and build the bull. Some kind of chip, some kinds sometimes

(01:02:38):
some kind some kind of majesty canwell mea like plastics and digital foils,
wrap represund and protective girls from thespiritual poison you spend at night like phony

(01:03:02):
clothes. But I really like mykind child. Some kind of nature,
sometimes of soul, sometime of mixture, sometimes of gold stars, some god,

(01:03:54):
kind of meta blue sounds, somekind of pastikiper wrapper around you can
you eat animals. They wear frnyclothes. They sit with a b and
building kind chid, some kind ofnature sometimes so some kind of mixture,

(01:04:33):
sometimes of golden scar the scars ma melancholy killing the las same tree I

(01:05:34):
with me, just lookin out onthe day, another tree where you can't
get what you want, but youcan't get me. So listening because you

(01:06:00):
are my medicine to me when youclose to me. The cold down the

(01:06:28):
submarine world. Does anybody know ifwe're loved? King out on the day
of another three. If you try, I don't care what you want and

(01:07:01):
come you don't can upday? Youdon't feel me when you got to me?

(01:07:45):
To me, I got this morning, didn't recognize the man in Europe.

(01:08:43):
And then I laughed and said,oh, silly man, that's just
me the night seeing to brush somestranger's teeth, but deep in my teeth
and I was way less, justquivering lax and come in the window of
the restroom marketing, tell you whatthe hell it was supposed to me?
But it was a Monday, noTuesday, no Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.

(01:09:08):
Then Saturday came around, and Isaid it was this big clown like
in the bathroom sink. All yearwanted was to be some morning left.

(01:09:33):
It was just like all I wantedthat just have fun, live my life
like a son of a gun.I could be one thousand miles away,
but still me would I said, then now got one run didn't get as

(01:09:55):
the man in the mirra. ThenI laughed and that said, oh sis
to me, that's just me.Then I have seen into night comb some
strangers here. Never was my style. But I didn't tell you what the
hell it was supposed to me becauseit was a Monday, no Tuesday,

(01:10:18):
no Wednesday, Wednesday, Friday, and then Saturday came around and I said,
us this stupid clown block in thebathroom, saying, but he was
sporting on my clothes. I gottasay, pretty camp and on one was

(01:11:06):
to be a man, but hewas always a little too cheap to be
admitted of the marble's lots. Heused a ways a thousand miles away while
still standing in front of your face. Then he got this mind mass before

(01:11:30):
the year has been laughed and said, oh, sitting, maybe that's just
me that I see two put somestrange teeth, but they were my teeth.
And I was way list just quivering, laxing and coming the window with
the rest. And I couldn't tellyou what the hell it was supposed to
me, because if it's a Monday, Tuesday, no Wednesday, Tuesday,

(01:11:56):
Friday, and Saturday came around, and I said, to lose this big
cloud, look at the apple, saying, but he spoke to on my
clues. I gotta say, prettydamp. Yes, the prolific Kurt Vile

(01:13:05):
and really rose to prominence over thelast decade. That is pretty pimping here,
on Kicks soon to be one ohfour seven, so make sure you
adjust your matters accordingly. Well, this is Deep Cuts. I am Jonathan.
I'll be with you here until theeight o'clock hour, as I am

(01:13:26):
for the most part on pretty muchevery Thursday. And now we're going to,
you know, continue what we've beendoing here, which is our favorite
records of the last decade. Thisis a little band that I like called
Wolfpeck, and you know we're gonnago ahead and spend them up. This
is off their album Thrill of theArts, very funky, enjoy bam all.

(01:16:00):
It's tough to say, I'm soand so it's taking me all.
It's tough to save good and tiptoeand the doll. It's buck steak,
I'm to know, stop to play. Put it in my bucket, butte
it in my bucket, in myback pocket, butte it in my bocket,

(01:16:23):
in my backet, in my backpocket. And now but it in
my bucket, butte and my bucketin my back pocket, budet in my
bucket, in my bucket, inmy back pocket. And I read it
when you like, he's a clasternow on basic paper, because I really

(01:16:44):
really need to know, I gottabe my screaky and it back kept a
streaking dour. Then never know ifyou gotta be my fler listened to ickyut

They're one of my personal favorites.I play their music on here many times
and talked about how I think they'rejust, you know, so great.
And this decade, this last decade, the twenty tens or whatever you call
it, you know, they've beenprolific. I mean they did when a

Grammy they were nominated and they won, and they put out like four or

they snuck it in at the tailend Man, Juicy Sonic whatever it's called
Juicy Sonic Nuggets or something like that, Juicy Sonic Magic, Oh yeah,

(01:31:28):
recorded live, one of their veryfew live records. They of course did
release Boxer in its entirety Lie,which was also tremendous. They put out
the you know, Day of theDead, like Grateful Dead tribute kind of
collective that they made. But theyalso of course produced fantastic records like I

(01:31:49):
Am Easy to Find, which justcame out last year, featured a lot
of extremely talented musicians, a lotof different voices as well, uh you
know, mixed with Matt's classic baritonewhich is wonderful to enjoy, and an
accompanying film by Mike Mills, youknow, featuring what's her name, Alicia

(01:32:13):
vicandor the very talented artist from ExMachina. Beautiful, beautiful film, incredible
record, and then of course theyhad Sleep Well Beast, which I do
believe won them that Grammy that theywere chasing. But right now we're going
to listen to something off of Trouble. We'll find me, and then we'll
switch over to the vinyl edition ofHigh Violet, which started the decade off

(01:32:38):

Boxer and you know, Alligator, which they had released a very quickly earlier
produced recorded I should say in Bridgeportand in collaboratively produced Peter Cadis. But

He's taking an epic road trip. But have no fear. There's plenty
of fantastic Chax music to warm yourear. Oh see what we did there,

(01:48:36):
that's wrapping. Probably not, butI'm gonna stick around here just for
just a couple minutes more, becauseyou know, we got a little bit
of a late start and everyone saidit'd be cool. Man. It's all
right. When you run a youknow, community radio station, you got
a little bit of flexibility, andthat's always good in life. Being flexible,

(01:49:00):
being adaptable is important because you know, change, change is one of
the very few things that is certain, and sometimes it may be difficult and
you might rally against it, butin the end, it's inevitable. So
just embrace it, man, youknow, go with the flow. Let

(01:49:24):
it wash over you in an awesomewave. It's important and it's unstoppable.
So before we wrap up, I'mgoing to share with you a few more
tasty selections. So many incredible bands, so much great music over this last
decade. I had to really tryhard to play some of my favorites,

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
