Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the heart of Detroit. You're tuned in with Morgan Riley.
Thanks for joining me for the latest word on the
streets of Detroit. We're covering local headlines shaping our city today,
from resilience in the face of tragedy to the spirit
that keeps Detroit moving forward. It's Monday, September twenty ninth,
and here are the stories you need to know. Yesterday
(00:21):
brought heartbreaking news from just north of Detroit, where a
mass shooting occurred at the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter day Saints in Grand Bloc Township. Local police, with
(00:43):
support from the FBI and bomb squads, reported that at
least four people lost their lives and eight others were
injured after a gunman entered Sunday service, opened fire and
set the church ablaze. Authorities have identified the suspect, Thomas
Jacob Sandford, and confirmed that he acted alone while the
building was destroyed. The swift response by first responders and
(01:06):
outpouring of community support has been both sobering and inspiring.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitner called it unacceptable, and neighbors expressed
shock at violence in their quiet community. Investigations are ongoing,
and officials have assured residents there is no further threat
to the public. Our thoughts are with Grand Blount and
(01:26):
will remain vigilant here in Detroit as we reflect on
what sanctuary means to us. All Closer to home, Detroit
continues to show its resilience and community spirit. Sunday saw
the twelfth annual Growler Gallop, a major event on Belle Isle.
The run wound through our scenic riverwalk and celebrated Detroit's
tradition of coming together, regardless of whether you run for
(01:49):
a personal best or stroll with friends and family. Walkers,
runners and supporters gathered at Atwater Brewery for music, camaraderie,
and yes, some hearty mission beer. The event is a
testament to Detroit's ability to uplift each other even as
the news grows heavy. As one participant shared, it's about
more than just a finish line. It's about knowing we're
(02:12):
in this together. On a lighter note, Detroit's cultural calendar
is packed this week. Music fans filled the Motor City
Casino Hotel last night for music Soul Child. Those with
a passion for R and B are still buzzing from
performances by living legends like Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle
at Little Caesar's Arena. Looking Ahead, Detroit will host Alice
(02:33):
Cooper and Judas Priest, Eric Church and so much more.
Visit the Detroit Events page for all the details. Expect
cool but comfortable fall weather this week perfect for getting
out to festivals, comedy at the Soundboard, and community events
at the Detroit Zoo. Carve out time with family, friends,
or neighbors to enjoy all our city has to offer.
(02:55):
Word on the streets of Detroit is that our capacity
to care for one another finds us just as much
as our grit and creativity. In moments of tragedy and
in daily joys, Detroit shows up. I invite listeners to
reflect on what community and sanctuary mean for you and
to take part in the shared life of our city.
