Oh, I'm so excited. It is so good to see
you again.

It's so good to see you. I was here in
organ at Bowman's Farm and Garden. But February March or
something like that.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
And of March, first of April, oh okay, yeah, everything
was kind of just starting to wake up, right and
now it is the beginning of August and this place
is Disneyland for gardeners.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Is such a great compliment.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
It's gorgeous.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
If you all live anywhere near Portland, you all you're
an hour south of Portland, right, it is just the
most fun, most wonderful place. It food and fun, stuff
to look at, stuff for kids, right, flowers.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
It just it's it's one of those things that's really
grown very organically for us is to tell people like,
there was no master plan here. My family has been
farming here since eighteen ninety five. Wow, it was my
great grandmother. Wow, let's start at the farm. And so
I'm generation number five. My kids are helping me out
in the farm, their generation number six. It's so I

just I'm so proud of everything that in each generation
has really done something new and different. My grandfather when
I was younger, well I wasn't going around yet. He
started growing vegetables as a seed crop. So you come
out of the Great Depression, you know things, people have
got to learn new ways to do things. People are
moving into suburban and city areas. They don't have their

own ground to keep their own seeds and grow their
own stuff. So he started growing broccoli and cabbage and carrots,
and selling a seed was interesting, which is different we've
done that before. And then my parents come along and
we had this farm and they were still struggling to
make ends meet, and they were working two jobs in
(02:52):
farming and doing all that, and so they decided to
open a little produce roadside stand they did. I mean,
I'm so proud of my parents for I mean, it
takes a lot of work, put yourself out there and
NonStop and you're working jobs. There was four of us
kids running around. I was not a good child, this
high energy running around. I feel terrible now, like as
(03:15):
a parent, going on, you put your parents through? What
did you do? I was busy. It was a busy boy.
And they started this amazing store. Yeah it's been great,
and so I feel the pressure, do you absolutely? Like
the farm has been so successful, it's all these things.
I love that and now it's like, okay, what's my thing?
(03:37):
And so when I was in high school, we started
a little like nursery. We were selling a few hanging
baskets and stuff, and I really love that.

But I knew.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
I knew my dad was the farmer. My mom was
this ultimate customer service guru. Like everyone loved her. Everyone
to come and talk to her and Okay. It was
like I knew I want to come back to the farm,
so what are we missing? And it was more of
the business end of things. Oh so my degree is
in accounting. Really I'm the encounter.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
But I can't see you as an account but it
came in super handy.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
And even like like my dad and he didn't get
along great when I was a kid, and my dad
wanted me out in the wanted me to be in
the field farming and our attractor and I hated it,
and I want to do that and I needed this
artistic kind of outlet as well. Yeah, and so it's
just worked out so well for our family that I
handle all the books and financials. My mom does like
(04:33):
the payroll and stuff like that, but in terms of
watching finances and stuff, I do all of that. And
the nursery was this like creative outlet for me to
your baby. Yeah, and I just I love it.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
So you guys, I know that this is just audio
and not video, but the thing that I love about
Brian is when he starts talking about the nursery and
he starts talking about his flowers, his eyes like sparkle
like they year.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
I you obviously love it so much because your eyes
light up.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
When I was here in whenever, it was in the spring,
and I was editing the video with you in it,
and I watched you talk about your combinations that you've
done with your planters, it was just like, Wow, this
guy's the real thing.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
It was just it was so fun.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Yeah, thank you.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
How did you get into because you're a wholesaler, which
means you grow plants and sell to other garden centers. Right,
you guys also are a huge garden center.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Here, like I called it, grower retailer.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Okay, there you go. Yeah, So what got you? Was
it just a necessity we need? You guys needed a
nursery or so the.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Nursery, like we were started a few hanging baskets out front,
and we people wanted to buy them, and like you know,
like I said, times are rough, the whole farm is
for sale, people, and we sold them. It's great. So
next year, you know, we finded a couple more, and
then the following we did a couple more and it
was mainly hanging baskets and what we would call color.
(05:58):
You know, they're blooming, that's what we want to grow. Yeah,
and this last year I think we did thirty thousand
of them. So we do a lot of In fact,
our hanging baskets we sell a lot of them are
in Tahoe. Most of the baskets throughout Tahoe, all the
ski resorts is sometime they get their hanging baskets from us.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
You're kidding.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Carson City, several garden centers in there, Reno, all the
way up to Seattle, Bellingham, up.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
And down the West coast, and these are all hanging
baskets that you have designed, which has been It's just
so fun to watch you and the things that you
put together are just well.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
I'm trying. I'm learning from Jamieanning to channel more pink. Pink.
I'm working on it.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
K is always the answer. Ryan likes blue and purple,
which I like too.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
It's beautiful, but more pink brin come on, I'm working on.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
So I have to say that if you.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
All haven't been here at Bauman's Farm, the display gardens here,
how did the display guard and get started? You know?
Speaker 3 (07:01):
And I mean, like I said, you know, we started
with hanging bascots on the front of the store, right
and people want to sell them in our place. I
always tell people we our location is like our biggest
attribute and are also like biggest detriment. We are on
the way to nothing.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Yeah, you really are.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
There's like nobody like driving by and saying, oh, I
need to solve there, right, Yeah. But the cool thing
about it is where you're coming to the farm. When
you are here, and like we grow tons of produce
and like people's like, well, where did this corn come from?
And I'm like ten feet that way, which I think
is fun. But because of that, like we become we're
very much a destination. Yeah. So I know that when
(07:41):
people come here, I need to show them a good time.
I need I want them to feel like they stepped
out of the rat race that they're in and they
can just take a deep breath and relax and enjoy something.
So by having all these window boxes and planters everywhere
(08:03):
in the playground and the chickens walking around saying his
you're going around, yeah, that to me is all part
of that just take a deep breath. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
And the whole place is surrounded with fields growing growing
corn and pumpkins and all that. I mean, it really
is like you're in a Hallmark movie, like a fall
Hallmark movie my daughter.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
It will be so thrilled.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Oh my god, I love all. Don't get me started
on Hallmark movies. But seriously, like they could film a
Hallmark movie here. It just would be perfect. It'd be
so much fun.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
So what do you think is coming up for? Like,
what are you focusing on now this upcoming couple of years?
Speaker 3 (08:42):
So right, we're back to You're back to the pressure
on me. It's like, what am I feel that pressure? Right?
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Well, hold on, let me let me back up.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Knowing you and knowing what you've brought to this place,
you have made like you have done it. You've made
this place a place that people like me and everyone
like me.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Wants to come to. Do you know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (09:04):
And what I mean by that is people who love flowers,
people who love family time, people who love cider.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Because I have wonderful.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Sight we have. But I mean, it was so funny
when you proven winners kind of connects the two connected,
the dots between the two of us.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
Yeah, And I was working on this gardening event and
they were like, we have we have this great lady.
She's in California, she's going to be in the area,
and she stopped by and I'm like, sure I had
I had not watched your YouTube channel and shame, I know.
But here I'm walking in the parking line and here's
this fubly young lady sitting there at their camera and
she's like hey, and I'm like, hey, I don't know
(09:43):
who you are. And it's just like okay, Brian, just
walk and show me on the farm. And it was
just so awesome. We connected so quickly, and I just
got to tell for all the people who watch you online, like,
it's so great to meet you, and so like just
see your enthusiasm and not only enthusiasm, but just the
(10:06):
ease at which you talk to people I think is
so relatable and it's just great. Thank you, We're welcome.

That's very sweet, And I do think that we had
a really good connection. At first. It was I literally
didn't want to leave. I wanted to be like, well,
what else can we go? See what?
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Because it was really fun. We had a great time. Yeah,
But so what's next for Brian?
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Right?
Speaker 3 (10:33):
I'm excited. I think there's times there's always chaos in
the world, and I think you have to choose to
find the opportunities. Yeah, Like, there's plenty of things to
get you down to me, that's not it's not who
I am and I want to be. Yeah, And it's
like we meet and you're like, I need to get
more proof winners to California. Yeah, And I'm like, all right,
(10:54):
how can I help? Like I'm going through winners doing
things like that. So I started with two garden centers
in California this year, shot down some product, and some
of it was successful, and some of it was hard,
like learning how to ship hanging baskets in the truck
for four to five days.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
Oh yeah, stuff that we don't as the consumer.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
We don't even think about that kind of stuff. Well,
and I haven't enough, and so I had some setbacks
and some things worked really well. So next year I
think working on some opportunities to get into some more
garden centers and to support the people who have supported me.
I have great friends that have amazing garden centers. Go
to the Greenery and Turnock to Orchard in Lafayette, Yeah,
(11:36):
which I need to go for sure. They are amazing nurseries.
Both of them got some products. So I just think
I'm growing for winters. I think we're doing a good
job at it.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
You're doing amazing, and so I think there's.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Some really great opportunities for us to expand out and
wholesound more into areas that don't have And it's hard, right,
California have this area where land is expensive, and then you
have these organic garden centers that we're there for so long,
and who can blame them for saying, it's a lot
of work and our land is in their selling. Yeah,
you know, great, good for you retired, you've worked your
(12:10):
whole life, your family, multi generations, do something else, enjoy life.
And so in California you have this lack of growers. Yeah,
there's just not a lot of them down there. And
then organ we don't have those same problems, and so
that's an opportunity to me.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Right, So I'm sitting here super excited, like yes, yes, yes, it's.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Just figuring the logistics out like I didn't and was
never like in the trucking business. I'm making connections and
learning how things work, how you have to schedule trunks
and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it's a whole.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
I mean, I guess that brings your accounting right and
business background into all of it, which is so fun.
So for just for those of you who don't quite
understand the wholesale, what wholesale means is Brian is growing
the plants from little babies, from little cuttings into the
plants that we buy from the garden center, and then
(13:01):
he ships those two garden centers all along the West Coast.
And if you live along the West Coast and you

It's beautiful, it's amazing, it's a lot of really great plants.

Yeah, so before I let you go, Ken, we can
talk about what room we're sitting in right now.

So I always so I told you, like the store
started in my front yard. That's where I grew up.
And we're the blue house. It's in like a parking lot.
Is my childhood home and my parents lived here for
a long time. But like one of the things that's
and this is a good point anybody that wants to
come here. We're closed on Sundays. Okay, Sundays are our
(14:26):
family day. Good for you, that's my day spend with
my kids. It's my day to do my gardening. Like
and so don't come on Sunday, okay, post except for
during pumpkin patch. We'll do that in another podcast. But
Sundays are our day. And finally my parents went out
of this house and it was a great opportunity to
put some office space in and it's we're sitting in
(14:48):
my little sister, Carrie's bedroom. My bedroom is right next door.
And I left because I have gone so far in life.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
You really have childhood bedroom is your office.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Because I needed a staff that needed new offices, yea,
and I could put three people because that one was
a little bigger in that one.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
Okay, it's so cute. You walk into the Bowman's office
and it's you're walking into a.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Kitchen basically, and that's your family, your childhood kitchen, right,
and then the accounting is in your parents' master bedroom
and it's like it's literally the real deal here here.
It's so cute. I love it so much. It's Disneyland. Seriously,
