Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, my name is Norma Stanley and welcome to Disability World. Hello,

(00:36):
and welcome to another segment of Disability World, where we
discussed various issues of interest and import about the disability
community and as a whole, and we talk about issues
that impact our community here in Georgia, across the nation
and across the world. I'm your host, Normous Stanley, and

(00:59):
the disability community is something that is very very important
to me and to about seventy million people here in
the US who have disabilities, not including their network of
family and friends. And so we love to bring on
community leaders and business owners and resource providers and advocates

(01:21):
and individuals with disabilities to share their stories and talk
about how they are working to impact our communities as
a whole and help to enhance the quality of life
for families of people with disabilities around the world. So
today we're excited to talk to mister Elim King, who

(01:45):
is the owner of an organization a company called Health
Harbor Life, which is an in home care facility or
care services company that works with young adults and children
with disabilities. And so we're going to talk to mister
King and learn how his company is making a positive impact.

(02:16):
Hi Elien, Thank you for a big fun disability world today.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Hey, how's everybody doing today? Thank you so much for having.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Me, no problem at all. You know, as the mother
of an adult with disabilities, I know how important what
you provide your company provides, how important that is. Tell
us a little bit about Harbor Health and what you
are trying to accomplish with your company.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Absolutely, and again, thank you so much for having me,
you know, Health Harbor.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Let me just give a little backstory before.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
I Actually I am a father of a child that
is on the autism spectrum, of my daughter of Morgan.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
He's seventeen years.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Old, and so I have been a part of I
guess the medically fragile community for seventeen years, right, and
you know, different nuances and things of that nature. And
if I gave you a little story just really quickly,
you know, what was it during COVID When COVID happened.

(03:19):
Those who have children that are on the spectrum, you
know that they're really about routine, right, They're really really
about routine. And when that routine is broken, right, you
know that's something that can significantly impact them.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Right. So during that.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Time, it was maybe one other factor, but we believe
that this was a major portion into she completely stopped
eating and we had to have a G two put in,
and so for eleven weeks thereafter, we had to go.
I had to from eight o'clock in the morning to
three thirty in the afternoon, had to you know, do

(03:55):
feeding therapy in order to teach her brain how to
think to eat again. Fortunately, I had a job that
was flexible because I was in sales, and you know,
they're just like you know, sales, as long as you
hit your number, you're good, right. But imagine being in
a facility from eight in the morning to three o'clock
in the afternoon for eleven weeks, still having to work

(04:16):
and watch your child being force fed, right, And so
you know, I would have loved to have had some
type of relief during that time, but I couldn't earn.
Her mother's a school teacher, so she couldn't do it either.
Obviously she had to be in class.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Right.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
So fast forward, you know, she was able to recover
and took about a year before she got back to eating.
Now she eats everything, right, So fast forward down the
road about a year, about a year or so ago,
a friend of mine brought an opportunity to the table
for me, particularly because he knew that I had, you know,

(04:51):
a daughter with special needs, and he knew some of
the things from the past as well, and he was
able to put me in touch with you know, a
mentor that I have now who's been in the same
business for a little bit over ten years and so.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
And it's in home health care.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
So we're a faith based in home health care that
provides services and support nurses to those individuals who have
medically fradical you know, children, those from twenty one.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Years and under.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
And the reason why that matters so much to me
is because I wish that I knew of this program,
which is the GAP program, which is a Georgia pediatric
program which actually allowed gets Medicaid to pay for your
nurse that we would.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Provide in your home.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
So this is something that I've been there where I
wish I knew about it back then, but I didn't
know about it. But now that I know about it,
it's exciting to me to provide this type of care
to individuals because I know what it feels like to
be that parent and need to have a moment, need
to be able to get away, need to go to work, right,

(05:55):
and so to be able to provide that now is
something that's very important and it just means a lot.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
That's awesome, and that's that's pretty much just how it
works for many of our parents with children with special needs.
I mean, whatever it is that we found that we
couldn't find to help our children, we turned it into
a business to try to help for the parents, to
try to make sure that they don't go through what
we went through. And so I do totally understand. And so,

(06:25):
how how long has your business been in existence and
how things going.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
I've been in existence since the beginning of fourth quarter
of twenty twenty five. You know, I'm kind of like
a spin off from my mentor or whatever who's been
doing it since for the past ten years. So I'm really,
you know, at the ground level of walking inside of
this space right now.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
But things are going quite well. Again.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
I do love it to be able to provide this
type of service for people that just don't know.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
About it, right right, So you met twenty twenty four
or fourth quarter train trains, that's like, don't mention, No,
that's not a problem. And so you know that medically
fragile children. That is such a challenge for parents because
you know, finding quality care for people that and people

(07:19):
who you feel you can trust to, you know, to
administer whatever you know, like you say, the tubes and
those kinds of things, that is not an easy thing
to do. So how do you find your people who
provide this care to families that that you know that
that would be something like what you had to deal with.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Well, that's through registered RNs, registered nurses or PCAs or CNAs,
so you know, indeed is my friend. Yeah, it was
easy to you know, to source those individuals and make
sure that they have the qualifications and then link them
with the parents that you know and have them interview
and if they get along with them, bands well off
and running through the races, right. And I think also

(08:00):
I want to add this part, Uh, there's also an
opportunity to provide these same funds that I would pay
a nurse, I can actually pay the parents. Yeah, I
can pay the parent to watch their own kid legally,
by the way, So the GAP program allows me to
find a nurse for you, or we have some parents

(08:21):
that want to care for their kids, and then I
pay you the same amount of you know, once I
get you qualified through Medicaid, of how many hours that
you're going to get per week, you as the caregiver,
get that money.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
I am so glad they started doing that, Yes, because
you know, I know most most parents would prefer to
be able to take care of their children, and because
I mean, yeah, there may be some great qualified people
out there, but it's nobody's gonna take care of your
child like you do.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Parents normally.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
In these situations, we have parents who you know, they
can't even work, one of their parents that might have
to stay home because they're trying to take care of
So you're already doing it.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Yeah, now you can get paid to do it.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
So the program's great, you know, to give that opportunity
to have what's already I mean, imagine, imagine what I
did for those eleven weeks.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
I would have received money. I would have been compensated to.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Take my kid and do what I was doing every
day anyway, from eight o'clock in the morning to three
thirty in the afternoon Monday through Friday.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Think about how many hours that is.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Oh yeah, absolutely, you know.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
So it's just stuff like that that you know, just
gives you an opportunity of blessing the community. I mean,
in order for us to really improve our communities, we
have to improve our families, right and so, and the
family the makeup sometimes the dynamic might have some shifts
based upon illnesses and things of that nature.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Let's just call it what it is. So to be
able to provide back.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
To my community an opportunity for people to be able
to not only be compensated, but then also be alleviated
to have, you know, someone else take care of their
kids so then they can go and make their money
nine to five. Go walk in the purpose that God
has for them.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
Absolutely, absolutely, I think that's a beautiful thing. And So
if people wanted to get more information about Harbor health
or Health Harbor my singing right, which one is help Harbor,
Where would they find that information and how would they
beat you?

Speaker 3 (10:24):
You can always go to Healthharbor dot life.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
That's my website, and so you can click on contact
us and it'll send me an email.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
So that's the easiest way. Of course.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
My phone number is six seven eight three five five
eight zero one seven six seven eight three five five
eight zero one seven, or you can send an email
to Health Harbor GA. So that's Health Harbor GA like Georgia.
So HEALTHHARBORGA at gmail dot com. And so either one

(10:55):
of those ways you can definitely get in touch with me,
or you can reach back out to Miss Stanley. She
can connect you to me, you know, so that's also
a way as well.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
I just have one more question. You know, I noticed
that you kind of emphasized that your company is a
faith based organization. Is there a reason why you emphasize that,
because I think that's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
I mean, it's in my flyer as well, you know,
it goes my little flyer right here.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
See how I say it's a faith based and.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
The reason why because I'm doing the work that God
has put me in the place of doing. And you know,
he he I would have never thought I would have
been in this space, right.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
But God doesn't always call the qualify. He calls you
and then he qualifies you.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
And so everything that I do, it's because God has
called me to it. This, like I said, this was
brought to me from a friend that I've known since college,
one of my frat brothers, and he was like, hey,
this is something that and everybody knows Morgan, you know,
you know I'm always talking about her and stuff like that,
so everybody's like, you know, people don't even ask me

(12:04):
how I'm doing it, like, hey, how's Morgan doing.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
I'm like, hey, I'm doing okay too well. You know.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
So it was brought to me just like she was
brought to us, right, and so it's just giving God
the glory of putting me in this space, and I'm
going to do what I can to help people inside
of it.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Well, I know, it's definitely a big need within the
disability community, and I know a lot of families who
I'm sure would be blessed by, you know, understanding what
it is that you're doing and connecting with your organization
because finding good help is so hard for our children,
and so that is something that is a gap that
you are feeling that we are very you know, I'm

(12:45):
glad to know about and definitely be sharing your information
with other families that I know that have children that
are medically frad JIB because that is really really critical.
You know, you have to have people who understand so
many different aspects of the medically fragile child. And so
I'm so glad that you guys are you know, filling
that gap. So you know, anything else we have to

(13:08):
we have to stop right now. But if there anything
else you want to make sure people know about Health
Harbor Harbor Health, please let us know and we look
forward to you know, checking in with you again in
the near future.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
This town went out for two seconds, but I think
you said anything else that I want people to know,
I think yes, that's pretty much it. I you know.
I of course, like I said, you always get in
contact with me via Health Harbor dot Life. I'm here
to support our families and build help build our community.
I want to thank you, uh, you know, for your

(13:42):
patience for me today because you know, and that's why
my I was going to just say, you know, let's read,
but then the Holy Spirit said, nol.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
To make it.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
It happens.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
I mean, you know, hey, life happens.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Yeah, So I'm glad.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
You're able to make it.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
I'm glad that I was able to come on here
as well. So thank you so much. And you know,
if anybody has any questions, feel free to reach out
to me.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
I'm here.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
You know, it is a great program that got programmed.
It's not going anywhere and what very well funded and
take advantage of it and give yourself an opportunity of
you know, being able to have something, have a resource,
have Health Harbor as a resource for you to allow
your you know, a betterment for your family.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
Absolutely well, thank you for taking a few minutes out
of your very busy day to be on with us
on Disability World and sharing what you're doing with your
company and to help families with medically frad your children
who may need that help inside their home. So thank
you again, and we look forward to hearing more about
how your company has grown in the near future, so

(14:50):
you'd be blessed and I'm sure we'll be hearing more
about how great you're doing.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
Thank you so much. Talk to you soon. Have a
great weekend you too. Well.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
We were speaking to me to Elim King of Harbor
Health Harbor Life. I'm so sorry I keep saying his
name wrong, but it's Health Harbor Life and he's doing
some amazing work for families of medically fragile children and
young adults. So definitely go heading to his website and
check out what he's doing, and if you have that need,

(15:22):
definitely go ahead and connect with him and see how
he can, you know, be of service to your family.
So we thank you for being a part of disability
world today and we look forward to bringing you some
a bunch of major wonderful guests who are doing some
more wonderful things in our community on behalf of families

(15:44):
and individuals with disabilities. So until next time, you'd be
blessed and we'll see you soon.
