Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, My name is Normas Stanley, and welcome to Disability World. Hello,
(00:35):
and welcome to another segment of Disability Worlds where we
discussed various issues of interest and impact as it relates
to the disability community as a whole here in Georgia,
around the country and around the world.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
I'm your host, Normous Stanley.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
And on Disability World, we look forward to speaking with
community leaders and individuals, parents, advocates, resource providers, business owners
who are who care very much about this vast and
vital population of about seventy million people in the United
States alone. And today I am excited to bring on
(01:12):
another friend of mine who is an author or speaker.
She is also the mother of a child with disabilities.
And her name is miss Helga Moore and she's going
to tell us a little bit about, you know, her
journey and her book. And also she's a singer. So
let's meet miss Helga more.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Hello you, I'm good. How are you?
Speaker 2 (01:51):
I'm great, I'm great.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Well, thank you so much again for being a part
I know you're hard to catch up with, so I'm
glad that you had a few minutes to vote to
sharing your story with us.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
On Disability World it's my pleasure. I know that.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
You know, we've known each other for many, many years,
and you know we both are advocates for the disability community,
and we both apparents of the new disabilities.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Tell us about your son, Moses.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Moses was born with the peace of his brain missing
called a genesis of the corpus colossum. It was a
challenge raising him due to his growth, uh not, trying
to get the right training and teaching for him equipment
(02:42):
that he needed. I had some awesome people to really
stand by me to help me with this care. And
when I say that, I'm talking about his dad and
my sisters.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
They pretty much helped me with them.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Doctor said that he would not live past teenage years.
But I have the pleasure of saying he just turned
forty years old October.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Of last year, twenty twenty four.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
He he's an awesome young man. Yeah, or should I
say an older guy? Well, he is is total care.
So you know he still needs that one on one
attention in order to be able to for his you
(03:32):
know needs, for all his needs right right. And you
know you were an advocate and a fighter and activist
and did all the things that you need to do
to make sure that you can maximize his potential and
make sure that he got the kind of care and
education that he needed. And you also, at one time
(03:53):
was a vestry provider. You were a foster care mother
to people with disabilities. So you've been through a lot
of the difference and you have to yourself, yes, yes,
I do you have that passage. Yeah, that was a
challenge to during the time of me taking care of
my son. You know, we all have to work in
(04:16):
order to have income come in. Though I took care
of children with disabilities and adults in my home, it
was enjoyable, but it also gave me an income because
I could not go out the house and work because
of my son moves. Being a nurse, you know, you
have to choose, you know, your days and time for work,
(04:38):
especially when you're dealing with a child anybody else with disabilities.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
So I mainly had to.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Work from home for the past what for about ten,
ten twenty years before actually getting out into the job world.
But again, like I said, it was a pleasure to
be able to work with other children and adults with disability.
(05:08):
Eventually I had to let Moses go and live within
a home not a nursing home. It's a personal care
home so that I can go out and work and
do the things that I needed to do in order
to provide for me, especially as you said, I have
health issues as well. I have lupus, and I'm going
(05:31):
to say I had lupus, and I had a heart attack,
I had congestive heart failure, and recently in twenty twenty
three twenty twenty four, I was diagnosed with cancer, so
I had to go through two phases of surgeries in
(05:51):
order to.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Have that removed, and still work.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
At the same time to provide for me and pretty
much try to Moses know that he's where he is.
Mama still exists, so I still go see him and
do the things that I need to do to let
him know that I'm still there for him.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Right and share with the listening and viewing audiences how
important it is to have family to assist. You have
two daughters who you know helped you with Moses, you know,
and who, by the grace of God, an independent young
women doing their own thing and successful in their own
(06:33):
areas of expertise. But they were a help to you
when they lived with you, and they were made big help.
They were a big help because you.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Know, even though you have a partner, who's your husband
to help you when your husband go to work, especially
when you have a health issue, you know, you need
somebody there to watch and see what's going on with
Moses while maybe I get rest, or maybe me is
something going on with me that I can't take care
of Moses right then and there, or any or the
(07:05):
other disabled you know, children that I kept, so they
understood what I was going through because they were right there.
So anytime I needed help, I didn't have to worry
because they were there. And it's very important to have
somebody there even if you don't have any illness and
you have a disabled child, just in case if you
(07:26):
have to go to the grocery store or an emergency
come up and you have to take care of that emergency,
at least you have somebody there that understands the need
of the child or the person that you're taking care of,
so that they can be able to feel in as
well when you can't be there for that moment.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
So it's very important.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
It is so important, and you know, that is one
of the things that I'm still challenged with because it's
just me and Sierra most of the time. But I
do have caregros that I feel comfortable enough now to
help me when I have to go and do other
things and I can't take her with me and things
like that. But but having a network of people who
that you know, you can count on in the emergency
(08:09):
situation and sometimes family, sometimes it's not family. But is
he a close friend exactly because I even kept see
her or sometime or you.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
You were first rest providers.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Yes, yes, so in fact, Moses's first boyfriend, well only boyfriend.
I remember when they got on the floor and cut
her rug yeah yeah, and.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Went to the prom and went to the prom. Yeah yeah.
So you know, you know she still loves Moses.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
You know, she doesn't get often, but but she knows
them when she sees them, and you know they always
trying to kiss.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
But we have to have to get them together. One.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Yes, definitely, definitely.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
You wrote a book about your journey and some of
the challenges that you've been through, and so tell us
about your book.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
My book talks about my childhood and growing up. The
name of it is you've heard of job now meet
Joe Better and the reason why I wrote that book.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Matter of fact, that name was given.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
That title was given to me because somebody said, I'm
going to call you Joe Betta because you've been through
so much in your life.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Really you should not be here right now. So that's
where I pick up that title for and reading the
story of Job, I would have to say, we all
are Job are Joe Betta because we all go through
challenges and troubles and sometimes we don't even understand how
we get through it, but by the grace of God,
(10:00):
we get through it. And we can't give up in
life no matter what we go through, because we all
go through challenges and in my thought, we.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Go through things as a learning experience, you know.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
Something, challenges that we get through because we never know
what God would call us to do, and we never
know will come in our presence that we may have
to encourage and tell somebody how to get through it.
Because of what we get went through, some of us
can come out strong, some of us can come out weak,
(10:37):
some of us can come out of not understanding why
we've gone through those things. But because we've gone through
that those things and we've come out of some things,
that gives us the experience to tell somebody, Hey, if
God did it for.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Me, he can do it for you.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Absolutely. What they saved your misery is also your ministry.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Exactly exactly.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
And then also the challenge that I went through, you know,
with medication, I lost my mind, you know what I'm saying.
But thank God they didn't think I was going to
get through it, but thank God I did, you know.
And it was only because of God I was able
to get through it. And that was another challenge, you know.
So it's so it's so many things we go through.
(11:23):
It when he said you can't you can't hurt my child,
you can't kill him, you know, but do what you
want to do. And this is what he took. God
told Satan. So Satan went back. And that's the same
with all of us. Try my servant, normal, try my
servant whoever. You know what I'm saying, because we all
don't go through it's an experience. And I learned that's right,
(11:48):
our own testimonies, own testimony, absolutely right.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
And so you know your book, you heard of job
Now Meet Joe Better.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
The full title, which I love, is You've heard of
Joe Now Meet Joe Better. My Spiritual Journey from Pain
to promise, purpose, power and prosperity and your shares, all
the different areas that you've been through, the journeys that
you've been through, and where you are now, and you
(12:18):
know a lot of it was truly miraculous.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
It.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Look, all I can say is only God, because I
couldn't do it by I couldn't.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Do it myself. Only God. God put you in places
all the time.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
If people understanding you could see the spiritual side of it.
God put you in places sometimes that you never dream
you would be, not by your doing, but by his.
It's almost like that thing said, I showed up, but
I don't know how I got here. And that's how
some of the things in my life has been. I
(12:59):
never knew I would be in this position. I never
knew I would be in this area. But if we
think outside the box and see our journey, we could
see how God worked to get us where we need
to be.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
When we think there will be one place, we're in
a total different place.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Different place. And the book that you're doing now.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
You are a manager of optometry at a Sam Samum.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
The department.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Yeah, so I'm an optician.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Okay, okay, it's an optician and.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
I'm actually a nurse and a nurse, and I'll tell
you this. I changed the story.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
I left Florida to come back to Tampa because I
went to Florida to stay for a little while, and
I was ready to come back because they told me
Moses wasn't gonna make it.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
So I came back if I was looking for a
job and a doc's office.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
And so my daughter said, my oldest daughter said, Mom,
she said, unemployment done ran out. Why don't you go
to Sam's and get a job, she said. I talked
to the lady they were hiring, and I looked at it.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
I says, you're.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
Crazy, I said, I said, I want to make some money.
I don't need to make no pennies. So anyway, you know,
when you get desperate, you think back.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
And he said, well, let me go ahead and do
this anyway, because I ain't got no money coming in till.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
I get a job where I want the job, Go
go ahead and do this. Well, I went there and
put me on the door. So I was a greeter.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
So after a year and a half, the man and
I've been praying. I've been praying to get out. And
I said, Lord, I said, get me out of here.
I went to fill out application.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
So one of the gentlemen, and I thank God used
him to come to me and he said, miss Hellca
sit still and I looked at him.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
I said sit still. He said, yeah, sit still, he said,
cause you don't never know where God is going to
take you. And I said, well, you know that's true.
So when they asked me did I want to come
to the octacle, I said, okay, yeah, so I was
getting paid some good money. Then I was getting paid
what I would get paid as a nurse.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
So then I turned around and they asked me did
I want to be the manager? And this was like
what two years ago?
Speaker 1 (15:24):
And I said yeah, and so like I said, you
know as much as I wanted to leave when I
first got here or where God has placed me, and
I thank him for.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
It because I love my job. You know, they always
say do what you love and love what you do well.
And first I didn't like it, but we but God
knows what's best for you. So you may not like
it now, but if you're hanging there for a minute,
you'll begin to love it. And that's what.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
As a gleeder. So you who knew you had to
end up being the man that atometry.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Department, exact exactly, exactly.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
So God has been good in my life and you
shown me a lot of things that I never dream
I would be able to see. And just like you say,
between the recording, uh, the book of you know, speaking
and all of that, you know, all of that was great.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
It was great and it was awesome.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
But at some point I believe God did what he
wanted me to do just in that time. But now
there's a new phase in my life to where he
did it to where I would be able to provide
for myself and my son. Because you speaking, you're recording,
you're doing the book. It's great, but if it's not
(16:48):
bringing in no money, you got to do something.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Yeah, well it.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
Exactly.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
So you know, God, God did what he wanted to
do with me for right now, and I'm happy he did.
I'm happy he did because I make more money out
than I ever made in my life, and I can
provide for myself and my son, you know, without any problems.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
And so as a you know, you were a single mom.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
You be married, but you were a single mom at
one time, and you know, so what advice would you
give mother, the children's special needs who want to you know,
who may think that there's no options and they may
not have the opportunity to become who they always thought
they wanted to be. You know, sometimes, you know, we
put ourselves in the back burner a lot for our children.
(17:43):
But you've been able to, you know, realize some of
your dreams and you're still on the journey of realizing more.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
But you know, like you said, God has done some
amazing things.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
What advice would you give to mothers who are still
going through the journey with their children and you know
may need some hope. Well, I will say everybody's situation
is different.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Everybody don't have go through the same thing in life.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
But I will say, know where you're going, know what
you want to do in life, and put it in motion.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Always know that the child that you have will always
be your child. You will be able to provide for
him or her. But think of the areas that you
want to be in so that you will be able
to provide for them and yourself.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
It's not going to come easy. It's hard work.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
It is.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
People are not going to give you a handout.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
No, you may have some people that may not want
to help you with your situation, but find ways to
be able to work and do the things you love
to do, even with your child. Yeah, God will make
a way.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
I will say.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
I will say I did work some with my son
at being married. Because of being a nurse.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
I can work seven at night Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
while my husband was home with them doing the day.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
So that was a big help.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
So we find ways to do things so that we
can be able to accomplish some of the things that
we want to accomplish, even in having a child with disabilities.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
So and again, you never know what God will do
for you even in that situation.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Yeah, because you have a CD out, I've got to
tell people about the CD. I'm sorry. That's one of
my favorite CDs.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
It's called Stronger and they have some amazing songs on
there that I still listen to to this day.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
And you know, one of my favorite songs is the
one that you go feel some Moses.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
What was it called this is what I See in Heaven.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Yeah, it's a beautiful song. And and you know, talking
about the fact that your child is not a curse,
you know, it's as blessing and yes, and and you know,
some of our children who may be both intellectually and
physically disabled and who can't turn, you know, we would
love to hear them talk.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
We would love to hear have them do certain things.
They still have their own abilities on them.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
Right. I truly believe our children is given to us
for a purpose and a reason.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
I had a dream, uh when I cried out to
God one night and I said why me? And in
my dream, crying acting God, why me.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
I heard the holy spirits say, why not you? He said,
I didn't give you the child because the child needed you.
He said, I gave you the child because you needed
the child. He said, in the process of you raising
this child, what have you learned? You learned love, You
learn patience, you learn stability, you.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
Learn unconditional love.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Because of that, you took care of other disabled children
and they needed love. And you didn't care nothing about
what the child looked like or what the child needs.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
You gave that child up.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
So a lot of times we may think when we
have a child with disability, it's a curse or somebody
trying to keep us from doing the things we want
to do or love to do it. In this life,
but actually you needed the child. So God can teach
you some things about yourself.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
If we're constantly running and going and doing things and
we're not thinking because we in that outside world trying
to get out there and do.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
Other things, sometimes God said I have to sit you
down for a Minnesota. I can teach you some things.
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 4 (22:10):
So everything is not to hurt you or to make
you feel like you don't have a life or you
can't do anything. You can still have a life, You
can still do the things that you want to do.
That child there is just to encourage you and help
you do it more, just to let you know.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
Hey, you can still do it.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
But at the same time, you're learning something about yourself.
Absolutely absolutely, and that's the most important thing.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
I know I have since Sierra's been in my life,
so I know I wouldn't be doing half of what
I'm doing now.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
One for Sierra. Ye, I'm very thankful.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
I'm very thankful. So tell us where we can find
your book, where we can find your CD, and you.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Know you can find this.
Speaker 1 (22:58):
You can find both the book and the c D
on Amazon. And I will say, because we have not
put out any lately. You can order it from from Amazon.
You can also listen to it on YouTube. You can
google my name and the CD will just come up.
(23:25):
Hella Jay Moore Stronger.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
I also found it on Spotify, so you can listen
to it on Spotify. There's a lot of different uh places,
you can find it just by googling my name. And
then again it's Telga J.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
Moore. Uh Uh. The book you can find it on
on uh oh goodness, Amazon, Yeah, yeah, and a few
other places. Like I said, you just have to google
my name. Yeah, and then you should. Well, I highly
recommend both the book and the CD. And uh, you know,
(24:07):
I you know, I know, I know held this journey
for that. I've known her about twenty years. Over twenty
years now, I guess. But you know, we have been
friends for a long time. And and you know, she's
a very talented woman, very determined woman, and she she
does not you know, when she goes something, she but
she decided she wants to get something done, she gets
(24:29):
it done. And she has two very talented and very
lovely daughters who are just you know, doing some gang
busting work. I mean just really really about to say
something else, kicking but I.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
Mean they are doing amazingly well in the work that
they do.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
And so.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
You know, so you Brittany, Yeah, Brittany, I'm hoping she
burdened her cookies here.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
She was live in Portugal.
Speaker 3 (24:59):
Yes, and she was on the.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
Junior Child's Cooking Show in twenty twenty two. So after
being on that cooking show, she decided to go to Portugal. Now,
she has several commercials. You may have to play her
commercials for them sometime. She also has a company called
the Cookie Shop. You can find it on Instagram and Facebook.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
For right now, she will be bringing it to Georgia
even though Portugal will be her home, but I will
be the one that take over and handle it for
her here in Georgia.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Yeah. Yeah, they look delicious as I can't wait to
taste them. I was like, you look.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Look really good along along with my pound cakes and my.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Yeah, she can make some serious case. But yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
Check out her herself on on Amazon and on YouTube,
Healthy j Moore for the CD Stronger and her book
You've Heard of Job Now Meet Joe Better. I highly
recommend them that they really can you know, they really
can can minister to you. And but that's all the
(26:19):
time you have today. Thank you for taking some time
out for you know, sharing your story and for being
on Disability World today.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
I appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
Thank you for having me normal. You know, I love
you and I'll always be there for you.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Thank you so much, and we will talk soon.
Speaker 3 (26:36):
Be blessed, all right, and take care.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
Thank you again for tuning in to Disability World today,
and you know, learning a little bit about my my
friend Helga More and the work that she's done.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
And you know, I like to survind.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
Myself with people who don't give up, people who want
more out of life.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
And you know, we both we all have gone through
our challenges.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
But you know, people like Helga have been part of
my network who helped keep me strong when I have
those week days and sad days. And you know, we
don't happen often, but they happen. And so you know,
having a network of people who understand what you're going through,
who have been there themselves and who are continuing their
own journeys, it helps a lot, you know, And so
(27:25):
I'm thankful for my close network of friends who we're
all we've all been there, you know, raising our children
and going through the various challenges that we go through
with our children disabilities. So again, thank you for being
a part of disability world today. We look forward to
again bringing you some more wonderful people, people who are
(27:45):
making impact, people who are contributing in a powerful way
to enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families
of children and adults with disabilities.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
And you know, until next time, you'd be blessed.
