Speaker 1 (00:01):
Dumb in the Morning with Melissa Moore, the podcast on
Cool one oh five. Some really good news coming out
of Major League Baseball. Melissa the very first female umpire
to work a game in the regular season. They've worked
preseason games, yep, yep.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
She's been working minors since what was it like twenty sixteen,
so almost ten years now, and they called her up
for this Saturday's Marlin's and Braves game, which is which
is great, But at the same time, I'm like, really,
twenty twenty five, Yes, I was thinking, I know the
NBA has had refs for a long time now, and
I think it was something like twenty eight years almost

(00:41):
thirty years ago, right, and so just now Baseball's doing it.
Why why has it taken so long?

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Her name is Jen Powell. She's gonna work out on
the bases like first, second, or third base umpire for
a double header Saturday, but then Sunday she's behind the plate.
And I'm excited about that. It is a great question
because what does it take to be an umpire? Eyeballs,
that's it. And I know I'm going to hear from

(01:08):
now people who have been umpires and stuff like that,
and they're gonna curse me and stuff like that. You're
basically looking to see if the ball crossed the plate
in a certain area absolutely, or if a runner reached
a base before the ball got there, or if the
ball landed fair versus foul. You're just basically looking at things, right.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
And that's what I'm saying. There's no excuse.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Why does it have to be dudes?

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Rights? Amen? Amen, brother dom. I don't understand, and I
guess I didn't realize, and I think this upsets me too.
I didn't realize that Major League Baseball didn't have a
female umpire, So when I read that story, it was
kind of a double whammy of good for her and
are you kidding me? This is the first that we're
still breaking these glass ceilings.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Look, I'm not trying to be all politically correct. I'll
just tell you I would trust a woman seeing something
like that, like whether a pitch was a ball or strike,
more than I would a guy. How Come I just would?
I mean, I I just my experience and being married.
My wife sees things that I don't see. That is true,
all day long, that is true, But do you see this.

(02:12):
I'm like where I can't even find stuff in the pantry.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Oh oh, you're that okay.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
So, but I mean, I'm exaggerating a little bit, but
I think you have a stronger sense of certain senses,
definitely hearing yes here Like all you got to do
is look, so, why would we exclude women from that?
It doesn't make any sense.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
It doesn't make any sense. And the fact that it's
taken this long is it's upsetting it once again. It's
the good news bad news thing.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Well, you know, the NBA had their first female ref
almost thirty years ago. Two women became NFL on field
officials in twenty twelve, twenty fifteen, yep, now baseball in
twenty twenty five. The NHL still is quiet about all
of this. They have not joined the party, but I'll
bet they will now. I would hope so too, don't

(03:02):
you think. Yeah, Skate watch the Puck. There you go,
