On today's show Ryan and Rick recap the Canucks 5-1 season opening victory against the Flames last night and chat about another busy weekend on the Vancouver sports scene.

Jays have already punched their ticket tonight five o'clock, five

It's the Mariners against the Tigers. And it's a tough
task for the Mariners. I will say t they got
Scuba going on the hill. It'll be the first time

in MLB history a team has beat the same starting
pitcher four times. If they can win tonight, we beat him.
They're not great, They're not great, but you know, at
the same time, I mean, I think the Mariners are
a deeper team, both off their pitching and their offense.
And I think everybody's gonna be available in the game
to night so we see hopefully. I really hope so,
because if you're a Jays fan in this part of
the world, even if you're a dier Jays fan, you

you know about how close the Mariners are. It's way
more intriguing if the Mariners are there than the Tigers.
I'm sorry. If the Tigers are there, that's boring. From
the Jays standpoint, it's a weaker team to face. In
my opinion, I think the Tigers are a weaker team
to face than the Mariners. So they might want the Tigers,
but this part of the world, come on, you want
just just hold on. Geographically, the Jays want Seattle right well,

in Toronto, they would not want Detroit two minutes away
from Toronto.

No, for sure, Tigers if they don't want to cross

this evening. But of course, last night Canucks Flames season
opener for the Canucks. Canucks beat the Flames five to one.
Just very quickly, before we get into the Canucks breakdown, Rick,
let's look at the other things happening this weekend. The
Lions are on a bye week. They have two home

games left. Their next home game is Friday, October seventeenth,
versus Edmonton. They are on the road. Their final home
game of the year is against Saskatchewan white Caps tomorrow Saturday,
four thirty in Orlando. They have two games left in
the regular season. I think the Lions have three games left,
by the way, I two. They both have two. They

have two. Matthew is in my strong suit, so I'll
lean on you for that. I know that white Caps
are in Orlando. They finished the season against Dallas at
BC play So four thirty tomorrow for the white Caps Abbotsford.
The Baby Canucks their season underway this evening in Henderson, Nevada.
They're gonna defend their league title. Yeah. A couple of things.

Tom Olander to make his pro debut yep, the kid
out of college, first round pick for the Canucks. So
many guys in Vancouver from abits for six guys. How
is Manny Mahultro? What is going to navigate that time?
And jet wound and Breeze bois out for long term.

gonna I don't know their defense tonight. Kudryat Sef and

Wilander are gonna probably be the top pair. But I
have to admit to you, Manny Maltrescott, six guys up
in Vancouver. He's got his top shut pair down, shutdown pair,
shut down pair. There go hurt long term. I want
to see Manny's line up tonight. It may not be
as great as he originally.

It is crazy the amount of turnover that's gone on
in Abbotsford. You've got guys promoted up here. You guys
guys departing, I mean arthur Sea LOFs. He's not here anymore, right,
he's in Pittsburgh. A lot of guys have left the organization.
So you're right, man, he's got a tough task ahead
of him. Oh we should mention the home opener for
Abbotsford is coming up on October the twenty four, twenty
fourth well Theough where they will raise their banner out

in Abbotsford. Giants are ending their road trip. They're in
Brandon tonight, Regina tomorrow, back home next weekend. Victoria has
a double header at home this weekend against Everett tonight
at seven and too more four. And you wanted to
mention the BHL by the base well, the BC Hockey
League Showcase. This is when the NHL scouts ye flocked

to the Lower Valley BAC Hockey League Showcase in Abersburg
and Chilliwack October twelfth to the sixteen, and you're gonna
see a ton of NHL scouts in town to watch
those kids. A great league, best junior A league in
the country, the BC Hockey League. Four of the five
days are at the Abbotsford Center where the Abbotsford Canucks playoff.
That's right, lot's happening. Another very busy weekend on the

sporting landscape. But last night five to one Vancouver Canucks
over the Calgary Flames in the season opener, home opener
for the Vancouver Canucks. Calgary coming off a back to
back situation, they of course opened the season in Edmonton,
then last night they were here. I thought. My impressions

(05:53):
of the game, Canucks I thought came out a bit slow, sluggish.
I think they tried to find their footing. But as
the game went on, they kind of they rose up,
they woke up, and they really put their best foot forward.
And the most positive thing out of this rick, in
my opinion, was the way they stepped on the necks
of the Calgary Flames on the second four goal. You know,

they look like the team that had the juice and
they used it and they put them to bed and
they put them away.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
If you would have told me the Canucks would score
five goals and Quinn Hughes will get no points, I
know the first line was quiet.

Till Besser's goal in garbage time. Thank you, Philipido. Don

This guy, Philipiedal, I tell you everyone talks about second
line center. The Canucks got to go out and get
a second line center. If this guy does, if Capitol letters,
if if he does every game what he did last night,
they don't have to go out and get a second
line center. They don't have to cough up Owlelander or
Lacarra Maki to get a second line center.

Look at this, I mean this was a lucky goal.
Let's be honest. You got the boom. Wolf's over to
the side, the Calgary players down. No one saw it coming.
A wolf didn't even react to it. Look, luck follows
people who work hard.

working hard right now, Hetel, I just look at this.
He worked on a shot in the summer, right, Yep,
working hard in the summers is just not for young
kids and draft picks. It's for veterans too, who got
to stay in the NHL year after year after year

confident and he brings so much speed up the middle
of the ice for the Canucks.

Just love what heatel did last night.

And they took care nuts, be honest, they took advantage
of a tired capsualty who played their wolf, I know
goalie back to back nights. That tells you the lack
of confidence they got in their backup, that Canucks want
to let him up like a Christmas tree. And so
you know what, and Nazem Kadri twenty four minutes in

Edmonton on back to back nights, they went into a shoe.

Huberto was not there.

They had every excuse to beat these guys to Caducks,
and they did, but it was close after forty minutes
because of Thatcher Dempko. He a couple of breakaway stops.
Dempko was the Dempko Bowl.

Just quickly on Dustin Wolf, you can keep this going,
dust Wolf Dustin Wolf. You you brought it up right.
Not only is it back to back, they went to
the shootout shootout and it was like a deep shootout too,
and yet they come back with him tonight or last night.
You're right though about Demko. Demco and and Adam Foot
referenced him a few times and he and credit to
Thatcher Demko. Postgame, he wanted to talk about the entire team.
He really tried to steer away from himself and how

he played, but he did. He kept them in it early.
He did what what Thatcher Demko did two years ago
when he was healthy. There was a lot of games
that that you guys recapped the next day and you said,
man Demko, for the first little bit he was the rock.
Then they got their legs, then they then they ended
up winning the game. And that's what we saw last
night from Thatcher Demko. Busy early on when he finished,

he only had like eighteen shots. Again, step on with
some quality shows and quality saves. I mean there's quality saves.
You get the heater heatal goal just moments before Coronado,
right in front of the net. He missed. He missed
basically essentially an empty net.

Yeah, and so the Canucks got a little bit lucky
there as well. But Dempko had a good summer, no issues,
no stepbacks. He comes in right now.

I will tell you the Canucks have the best one too,
tanem in Net and and there's no reason to overplay
Dempko in an Olympic year with your backup making four
point five million dollars, I think the Canucks are setting
goal big time. Well, so I was going to ask

the fact that you can legitimately have a conversation tonight. No, No,

of that, but I think it's just the fact that

you're right against Edmonton Powerhouse hockey night. You're not in
your building, but your best goalie's always got to face

Things first of, All thatcher demco right and didn't necessarily
have to make a big volume of, saves but made
some key. Saves and now that early, on you, Know
calgary carried to play a little, bit not, heavily but a.
Bit and then there was that shorthanded save that he
also made THAT i thought was a really good, one
and it was important to keep The canucks ahead at that,
point and you know when he was, needed he was, there.

Right so if you're Thatcher, demko you know it's your
first game one season opening start in a couple of.
Years you. Know, LOOK i know he's felt good about
his training. Camp everyone who's looked at him his felt
that he was solid in his. Recovery but you had
to see it, right and you, sure we need to
see a longer sample. Size we need to see sustained.
Health but that was a lot to get excited. About
and then what was the other big question about this?

Team right death scoring and for them to get their
first four goals without the top line being involved at,
all and Then Quinn hughes not being involved in the
scoring at all and you get, five that's got to
be a pretty good sign moving.

Goaltending would you go back To dempco tomorrow and then
lancing it Maybe? Monday or how quickly do you think
we'll See Kevin.

LANKMAN i would go TO i would go back To demco,
tomorrow AND i don't think there's a reason not. To
it's early in the. SEASON i think you've got this
road trip coming, up and there are opportunities to get
lanking and in, there maybe game three of the, season
game two of the. Trip you, KNOW i potentially look at.
THAT i don't think you've got to limit lanking in
the back to the back, games, RIGHT i don't think
that that's reasonable because, ultimately you, know you're paying this

guy to be more than a fifteen game a year, starter,
RIGHT i mean he's going to have to get somewhere
in the twenty five to twenty seven range in terms
of starts for this to be an effective. Situation for
depth go to keep him healthy and then also to
justify the amount that you're paying.

brings a tremendous amount of speed up the middle of the.
Ice he worked on his shot in the. Summer it

flying last. Night you really got to like what he
brought to the.

game whether or not you, know he kind of heard
the conversation about the team trying to add to their center,
depth AND i didn't necessarily say top six center or
number two line. Center but you know he hadn't heard
it because he said he hadn't if you know WHAT i, mean,
right just by the nature of the, answer that he
doesn't pay attention to all of that, stuff AND i

think it was important for him to make a. Statement, now,
LOOK i think we know That Philip heatle can. Play
whether or not he can be a full time effective
second line, center we'll see because everyone kind of us
him as somewhere in between a two and a three.
Seat but the big thing is is we want to
see him, healthy right because if he's, healthy he'll give
himself a shot with that speed to be an effective
player in that. Spot but, YEAH i think the early

away or that impressed me for game one was was B, october,

McCaffrey doesn't look the, same all the injuries at receiver

Way this might be Call shanahan's best early season coaching
job of his. CAREER i don't want to overplay what
happened in That Tampa bay game because of the number
