(01:01):
which starts tomorrow in Penticton. Scheduled for well right now
at ten am at Rogers' Arena. We believe Jim Ruththerford
will speak Patrick Elvin will speak, Adam Foot will speak, Ryan,
how are you? We got them? We got them.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
They're sitting down right now, so we're ready to go
in about ten seconds.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Okay, well let's do it, rock and roll down to
Rogers Arena. We go. Cannucks making themselves available to the
media ahead of training.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
Camp start of the twenty five twenty sixth season. We're
really looking forward to it where we'll say the obvious
that we're happy that the book's been closed on last year.
I feel very fortunate the way the coaching situation played
(01:49):
itself out after Talk decided he was going to move
on and Patrick and I looking at different people to
become I'm the next head coach of the Canucks. Adam
Foot did a terrific job in his interview. We already
knew him, we knew what he's capable of doing, and
(02:13):
then from there to be able to get the assistant
coaches that we got. I'm really excited about it. I'm
really impressed with his coaching staff, and I know Adam
doesn't have a lot of head coaching experience on an
NHL bench, but I view him as taking the same
(02:33):
pathway as Rod Brindamore. Did, and I know brought Rod
Brindamore very well. I'm the one that hired him after
he retired as a player, and I knew he was
going to be a good head coach and I feel
the same way about Adam. Adam is well prepared. He's
had a very good offseason. I don't think our players
(02:56):
could be more prepared for training camp in the start
of this season with all the things that Adam is
coaching staff and that the players have bought into. And
so we are excited that the guys have done what
they need to do to have a good start and
(03:16):
now we'll find out for real. That's why we have camp,
That's why we play the games. So again, welcome and
fire away.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Adam.
Speaker 6 (03:28):
Start with you, sort of building off what Jim said,
how have you felt about how things have gone for
you in the off season as you prepare for this
point and your first season as the head coach of
the Canucks.
Speaker 7 (03:37):
It was good, busy offseason, as you know, the interviews
of getting this coaching staff together, which I'm really happy
with how that worked out, and then you know, discussion
with players, getting your leadership group going.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
I felt like the guys committed to that, and we've
had some really good a.
Speaker 7 (03:55):
Zooms together and you know, well I was impressed about
the most probably with that was the first test we
had with this leadership group was our skate test, which
happened a few days ago. We allowed and asked the
players what their opinion was if they wanted to do that.
(04:15):
Most players are concerned about skate tests and camp and
not affecting them as far as injury, you know, moving forward,
so we can get a good camp and a condenned
season where those practices are very important.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
So they asked to do the skate test earlier.
Speaker 7 (04:31):
Obviously we had discussion about it, and what I'm impressed
about is they held each other accountable in the summer,
they talked about it, they discussed the test. They agreed
that this skate test was the right test for them,
and what I was impressed about was they hit the mark.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
So every one of them hit the mark.
Speaker 7 (04:49):
A couple of players came in stronger, which means a
few more pounds to carry, and a good test is
to see their numbers go up in a skate test,
So to start that, I was happy that the communication
we had with the leadership group in the commitment they had,
knowing how important that was to get a good start,
not only in camp but for our season. So you know,
(05:12):
I felt like they did a good job coming together
and working with each other to get through that.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Jim, every year almost feels like we asked this question.
You obviously said two years ago.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
If everything goes right, this is a playoff team.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Is that your view this year? How do you see
this team?
Speaker 5 (05:30):
Well? I don't. I like a lot of things that
are in place now, from the coaching staff.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
To the players.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
We talked at the end of the season about getting
a little more depth at center, and that I know
that Patrick was on the phone almost on a daily basis,
and either players weren't available that he wanted or the
prices were sky high and it did not make sense
to way overpay at this point in time for center iceman.
(06:04):
But with that being said, I think the centers we
have are good as long as they stay healthy. If
you look at our team today compared to we where
we were a year ago, a lot of things have improved,
from our goaltending to our defense, and then we'll see
(06:25):
how the forwards play out. But with that being said,
I like the group of guys we have, and for
the most part, with the parody in the league, you
have to have everything go right.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
You know.
Speaker 5 (06:38):
Everybody's not like Edmonton where they have two guys that
can can turn it up and win a game for you.
And there's some teams like that, but then there's a
lot of teams that are very close. But I do
believe if everything goes right and as we go along
make an improvement here and there, that this team can
(07:02):
be in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
That said, you have a pretty good guy on defense.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Who can turn it up. I'm sorry, you're a pretty
good guy on defense who can turn it up.
Speaker 5 (07:09):
We do, we do, and and and we have a
world class goalie, and we we have an impact superstar
and PD so we we also have those types of players.
But the two guys I pointed out are obviously the
(07:31):
best players in the game.
Speaker 6 (07:34):
Adam, it sounds like the lines of communication with your
players has been opened as soon as you took the
job as head coach, calling them most of them seems
like on a weekly basis. After kind of last season
where there was a bit of a cloud over the
locker room, what was the first order business for you
to make sure that everybody was feeling like they were
on the same page and comfortable coming to this season.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Yeah, I getting the leadership group together.
Speaker 7 (07:57):
I mean, the first thing for me that I want
to take care of was getting p D, Demco and
Hughes together.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
And it happened real it happened quick. You know.
Speaker 7 (08:09):
I asked PD I think it was on a Saturday,
to come down on a Wednesday, and he stopped what
he was doing and made that commitment, which I found
was really big. You know, we ment the Detroit aregaus
Demco lives area and and a young baby, new baby
and you know Huggies. From there, it made sense to
(08:29):
go out and get together and have a couple of
days together. We had some golf DeMar and I took
them down. They still one hundred dollars. I guess we'll
have to get that off in this training camp. But
it was a good group. It's a good time to
get together to talk about what they wanted to discuss.
H I call it working on our contract together of
(08:51):
our leadership group, how we're going to carry ourself as
a group, as a team, and what we want to
start throughout the summer, which was.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
You know, getting a leadership group together.
Speaker 7 (09:01):
We had three zooms throughout the summer, you know, to
talk about moving forward, how we wanted to approach our season.
Speaker 8 (09:12):
Adam, building off of that, this will be your first
camp as an NHL head coach. How do you what
do you prioritize heading into this camp and how do
you envision it.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Playing out this camp?
Speaker 7 (09:26):
Well, you want to use this camp for to get
these guys back into it. I mean, they're all in
good shape and but you know, you can do everything
you do in the summer, but you know, getting physical,
getting into bodies, chipping the body, reving the pace up
to that NHL pace consistently. We'll be doing but running
through with the condensed season with the Olympics, we're going
to have less practice time, so we're going to use
(09:47):
these practices, still work on our systems, running them through
drills that they can still condition and get used to
the physicality, but also put in play how we want
to play at our structure.
Speaker 8 (09:59):
And Patrick Jim was talking about how you were looking
for a center on the market this summer. Can you
talk to us about what the what the market was
like a little bit this summer and what you were
hearing from other gms around the league.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
Sorry, what was the second question there?
Speaker 8 (10:12):
What were you hearing from other gms around the league?
Speaker 9 (10:14):
Well, I think you all were aware of it wasn't
much of a market here in terms of transactions this summer.
The new CBA has taken place here and you see
a lot of players extending with their current team. That
being said, I think or analytics staff or scouting staff
(10:36):
have done a really good job identifying potential players that
might come available, talking to Adam how we want to
play and what type of players he's looking for to
fit into the system here. So there's been a lot
of conversations, but unfortunately, up to this point, not much
(10:58):
have trying parent into deals.
Speaker 10 (11:04):
For Jim and Patrick with physical sort of in the books.
Is everyone accounted for and are there any injury designations
or any players who may not be on the ice
that we'd expect to see for injury reasons.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
Or what have you.
Speaker 9 (11:19):
On Thursday, as far as today walking in there's players
are still doing medicals and all that. Jet Wu had
a surgery here early August and probably will be out
month to month.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Looking more towards.
Speaker 9 (11:40):
November, Ty Mueller got injured on obvious he was supposed
to play in the rookie tournament here.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Hopefully he's back.
Speaker 9 (11:50):
I would imagine he starts skating here this week and
back and full practice next week. Ravinskis had hernia surgery,
are in the summer and being here rehabbing now for
I think a month, and he should be close to
getting back here. But as far as I know, otherwise,
(12:12):
everyone is ready to go here.
Speaker 10 (12:14):
And then for Adam, you talked about downloading some systems
and taking advantage of this practice time. I'm sure in
meetings with your staff you've spent a lot of time
thinking about how you want this team to play. I
know it's probably a little early and things will adjust
on the fly as you go, but can you give
fans a sense of sort of what Adam foot hockey
looks like? Ideally that would be for me is we
(12:40):
want to be able to adapt against our opponents. Like
I can't sit here and say we're going to be
a rush team or a dump and chase team. We're
going to be a team that adapts to our opponents
make them feel uncomfortable. So there's gonna be nice where
we're gonna have to defend maybe a little bit longer
depending or be above some.
Speaker 7 (12:57):
Speed through the neutral zone. But we're going to play consistent,
consistent hockey.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
As far as as a unit of five, our goaltender
unit of six.
Speaker 7 (13:05):
We're going to play as a team. And I will
have the buy in with this group to be able
to adapt. Been lucky to play and some good teams,
you know with Canada and you know Colorado over the years,
playing for some great players. And what I when those
great players are ready to win, they they adapt and
play the shift that's needed at that time.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Whether you have to defend that shift. It's been a
long shift in your end. You got to get a
quick change and not go on the offense all the time.
Things like that.
Speaker 7 (13:35):
For an example, we're going to be a team that
you know, if I'm defending against a heavier player, I
got to make sure fifty.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Percent of my body is ahead of them at all times.
Speaker 7 (13:44):
Right if I'm going against speed burreys on the far
blue line, I got to be aware of them.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
So he doesn't beat us.
Speaker 7 (13:51):
And so will adapt as a group. From who our
opponent we play, we will have our systems in check.
But the thing that I want to focus on most
probably is numbers. We we we're a great defending team,
but I think we can get back quicker with numbers
where we can strike say two verse three in our
(14:13):
end or two verse four, we can get better at
striking faster.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Almost.
Speaker 7 (14:19):
It almost feels where you've played great hockey teams and
and you know you run into your game. Seven's the
big games. Good teams make you feel like they've got
an extra player on the ice and that's just working
away from the puck.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
And I call it numbers. We're gonna try to do
that and most zones, but coming into our zone.
Speaker 7 (14:36):
Like I said, we're a great defending team, but if
we can strike when we have the numbers and have
the confidence that if we're gonna strike three guys versus
their two, the other two guys won't get be back
to our end and they'll have us covered, you know.
So we're gonna focus on that. But again, we're gonna adapt.
You have to be an adapted team. We're gonna play
different styles of teams. We're gonna have heavy teams, We're
(14:57):
gonna have fast teams.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
We're gonna have team that are going to.
Speaker 7 (15:00):
Be on one nothing game with their structures so we're
not going to get caught in playing one way. It's
that's not the way I want to approach that.
Speaker 11 (15:10):
Further that question, Adam Adam put the coach compared to Rick.
Talk at the coach and we're going to probably hear that.
You know at some point throughout the season. In comparison,
how does that identity for you take shape? Is it
with the players who form your lineup? Is that the
health of the lineup in terms of how your hockey
team is going to play and look Building off what
you just.
Speaker 7 (15:28):
Said, well, I mean, Rick, still a lot of great
things with the hockey club. As far as you know
the way we play, there's there's there's things in our
system that are going to stay in our system. Right,
whether Ri's here or not, would probably move to the
next phase. The next step we had to become a
really good defending team. We had to become a team
that changed right. We had to become a team that
(15:50):
doesn't go rogue when it gets hard, get individual like
if you look, I guess you guys will we'll get
you thinking of a p K.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
When a player loses stick, whether it breaks or drops it.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
Usually you can test the team there you have two
three guys running around trying to block shots getting out
of structure.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
You know you're not quite ready.
Speaker 7 (16:09):
You look at our penalty kill at the end, they
were we lost a stick or a five on three.
We stayed in structure, We didn't panic, and you know
we're going to be a team that with our process
which we talked about all summer, the guys have sacrificed
which starts in practice in day to day in their
belief when the waves get a little a little bigger,
(16:31):
if we stick together and don't go rogue, well will
not panic and we'll stay in our structure and we'll
get the job done. So that's an example of what
we've been discussing and what I guess the identity would
be adapting and and just you know this team, this
leadership group to empower them, they'll be able to hold
(16:52):
each other accountable and keep each other in check. As
far as when it gets hard, when the schedule gets hard,
when when the back to back or some injuries come above,
we still have that belief that will stay and have
enough to get it done and give ourselves a great
opportunity to win.
Speaker 11 (17:08):
Every night Jimmy talked about the two superstars on this
hockey team, there's no questioning the effort of one. I mean,
Quinn Hughes game in and game out is always there.
This is Eleis Petterson's eighth season. We shouldn't have to
be questioning his fitness level, his commitment level, his details
at practice. What has he shown you this summer as
a management team? What has he shown you briefly on
(17:30):
the ice as a head coach to say that this
superstar is back and is committed in his eighth INNHL season.
Speaker 5 (17:36):
Yeah, I think it's mar of a question for the coach,
but I can just tell you what I heard. I
didn't go to visit him in Sweden, and I have
seen him a few times since he's back, and I
know he put the work in, and I think we
also know he didn't a year ago. And success comes
(17:59):
with preparation, and I believe all of our players and
especially PD has worked very hard this summer. So now
the test is test starts tomorrow. That's why we have camp,
why we play the games. But I do believe he's
committed to be the player that we all expect him
to be, and we're all hoping that that starts right
(18:21):
from game one.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Yeah, I mean PD like for me coming over within
four days, that commitment, having those conversations open book.
Speaker 7 (18:31):
He really wants to continue to grow. Obviously, you see
maturity happen throughout where his testing. The first test he
did very well, and it's a type of test that
if he did the work in the summer compared to
last year, he might not. He had to do the
work to get the number, and it's a great start
(18:55):
and I'm looking forward to working with them, and I
think as teammates too, leadership group, they're all they're all
poem for each other and helping each other get through
this and understand this process. And I think it's a
good start for everyone to see that.
Speaker 12 (19:13):
For Adam, I guess the most prominent new face on
the team this year is is Evander Kin. So I'm
wondering what your conversations with him were like over the
summer and how you picture him fitting into your forward
group this year.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
Yeah, We've had great conversation. I love his grit. He's
hard to play against, you know. He we needed that
some of that Sam paper, you know, and he's been some.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Great playoffs as you know. But we'll enjoy the way
he plays and.
Speaker 7 (19:48):
Moving forward his leadership like in the hard games, right,
So we're gonna it's gonna be fun with them.
Speaker 13 (19:57):
One for Jim and to follow for Adam Jim. In
this game a long time, it's never been about appeasing
one player, no matter how special he is.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
Although Quinn is on a different plane.
Speaker 13 (20:08):
He's a generational player, he's an Oors Trophy winner, he's
going to the Olympics. Do you think you have to
do something, regardless of your cap restraints and the assets
you don't want to part with, to improve your roster
before the season starts early in the season, to give
Quinn another indication that this team is going to be
(20:28):
better positioned to win.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
Yeah, I mean it's a very fair point. And obviously
Quinn's future is so important to this franchise in this city.
Everybody's aware of it. Everybody will talk about it until
we get dizzy. But at the end of the day,
(20:55):
he doesn't have to make a decision yet. And sometimes
in life you think one thing one month and something
else another month. So to your question, it's always important
to win, and especially in this situation, we're a little
(21:15):
bit caught in between.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
When you.
Speaker 5 (21:21):
How far do you go to do that, which means
how many draft picks do you want to trade and
how many of the of the future do you want
to trade? Because you could do that and he could
make a decision to go somewhere else non related to
how the team does, or you just go all in
(21:48):
and see where it goes. I mean, it's what I
did when I managed in Pittsburgh. We knew we had
a chance to win cups and that was the direction
from ownership, and that's what we did. So we're always
going to try to improve the team and have a
better team.
Speaker 3 (22:07):
But it gets.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
The first thing that Patrick hears when he calls somebody
about a player is Okay, no problem, we want first
round pick or a couple of first round picks, or
your top prospects and things like that, And that becomes
the juggling act. As you do that, your team's a
lot better, your team has success.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
And he may.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
For different reasons, probably have reason so we would all
consider doing It's not just him. He may consider that
he would prefer to be somewhere different geographically, for example.
You know, I mean, the biggest topic we all talk
about must play with as brothers I mean think everybody
(22:55):
knows that by now, right, but doesn't mean it has
to happen two years from now or one year from now.
It could happen at the end of their careers. So
they say they played with each other. There's so many things.
I mean, you can spend this thing a hundred different ways,
and there's only one guy that's going to make that decision,
and he'll make it for whatever reason. But we do
(23:17):
have a responsibility, Quinn hughes or not to have to
put the best team on the ice weekend, and that's
what Patrick has to work on. He has to continue
to work on that through the first half of the
season to improve our team.
Speaker 13 (23:33):
Adam, you've come to O'Quinn as well as anybody running
the back end.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
And I remember a year ago and.
Speaker 13 (23:38):
Before a preseason game in Abbats for I had asked
you about how you going to better prepare Quinn be
such a target out there, and he played through so
many things last year. Is it fair to say there's
another level for him to reach. It's hard to imagine,
but is there another competitive level for him to reach,
whether it's production wise or the way he drives the offense?
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Well, I think the level is his growth.
Speaker 7 (24:00):
Every year you look at the great players Crosby, he
works on his game every year, he works on off
the ice on the ice, I think with Quinn his leadership,
he'll continue to grow as he goes through this process.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
And you know he's a great occuplayer. We all see it.
There's going to be now adapt time to adapt.
Speaker 7 (24:20):
There's so many times where teams are going to be
up on him, targeting him and as far as match
likes plaining, I call it the stain sticky on him
so he doesn't get the puck. It's going to be
some nights where he might not have it as much
because they're they're pressing him. So we'll play, we'll knock
him down on a four and four away from him
and that's the growth of a team in the leadership
that I think you'll see. You know, he's a young guy.
(24:43):
He's going to continue to grow. And we've had a
great conversation recently that he's happy, he's ready to play,
ready to go, and he called me and said he's
fired up and can't wait to get back and get
on the ice. His head's clear, so very positive for
me and he he asked me, I want you to
(25:05):
keep teaching your staff, teaching me how to win.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
A game seven.
Speaker 7 (25:09):
And it's huge to hear that come from him, that
he knows there's growth there and we all keep getting better.
Speaker 1 (25:17):
I mean, you look at you.
Speaker 7 (25:19):
If you're lucky enough to play this year, for fifteen years,
twenty years, you have that mindset. The great players have
a mindset to be a sponge, and I think he's
maturing into that where he knows he can continue to
grow with He's got great coaching around with Dean. He's
been a lot of good boss in winning heres, so
hugg He's in a good spot. Real happy with our
(25:42):
last conversation Jim over here.
Speaker 14 (25:47):
Early in the offseason, you talked about Quinn and potentially
wanting to play.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
With his brothers.
Speaker 14 (25:52):
At some point, Quinn was asked about those comments specifically
in the last week or so, and he said, Jim's
pretty smart guy, and his comments made it sound like
your comments might have been strategic. Is there a way
for you to manage this situation or manage the message
that maybe led to you saying that early in putting
it on the table. Because it's a savvy market, they
(26:14):
probably would have talked about it here anyway fans would have.
Speaker 5 (26:17):
I don't think I told anybody anything they didn't already know.
I mean, come on, this this wasn't the surprise, So
I really don't. I don't know what your point is.
Speaker 14 (26:28):
Well, like I said, he made he made the point
to make it seem like it was intentional that you
kind of put it on the table at that time. No,
and Patrick, you restd earlier about the second line center
is not an evolving process for you? Are you still
day to day trying to make that happen or do
you want to get through camping now and see what
it looks like before you dive back into that.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
Well again, I think it's evolving process.
Speaker 9 (26:53):
But also the day to day conversation here with Adam
and and or staff watching our players through the camp.
Jim started off saying that we're we're very pleased with
with a group of players we have here, excited about
them and the direction we're going with Adam here and
(27:14):
how we're going to play. But absolutely it's in the
years past we identify the area, so we're a team
that we need to continue to build out on and
and in this case we're identified that we want to,
you know, build out in the center dep position. So
definitely the conversation is going to be ongoing here. And
(27:37):
since I got higher by Jim, we're always looking to
improve our team. That's our job and it's Adam's jobs
to improve each individual on their team to get better
and play the right way. And he's done a really
good job off season here building the leadership strength and
(28:00):
improving and empowering the guys.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
To take the next step.
Speaker 9 (28:03):
So we'll continue to talk and see what's available here
as we move along.
Speaker 3 (28:10):
Okay, down at Rogers Arena, the words of Patrick Elvin,
Jim Rutherford and Adam Foot ahead of training camp ahead
of the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six season for
the Vancouver Canucks. A lot to chew on there. That's
exactly what we'll do, and we'll introduce the poll question next.
We'll take a break. Donnie and Dolly the team, won't you?
Speaker 15 (28:30):
Dolly and Dolly the team is supported by Ableauctions dot
ca A Closing your Business we can help.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
Able Auctions specializes in helping British Columbia based business owners
close their business.
Speaker 16 (28:46):

events for everything from machine shop and manufacturing auctions to
industrial equipment, retail inventories, or any.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
Other type of business assets. Able Auctions can have.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
Oh for a free confidential consultation on getting your business
assets sold, please email sales at able Auctions dot Ca.
That's sales at ab LA Auctions dot Ca. All right,
we'll get to our waddling dog poll question in a bit,
but first let's and we've got to move here, but
(29:22):
recap what we just heard. What stood out for you
from Rutherford, Alvin and Foot and that press.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
Conference, big one for me quickly. The Second Light Center.
They've been trying. They tried all of July, they tried
all of August. They're still trying. Prices are sky high.
Too many good centers resigned with their teams. Don it's
not a great market. It's not a great market.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
He keeps trying.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
I've been told even in September, Alvin's the one GM
out there trying to make trades. But there's no partners
right now.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
Don okay, our bayside oceanfront resort Inbox has been inundated
with this. Jim Rutherford was paraphrasing year asked about Quinn
Hughes's future which is uncertain in Vancouver two years left
on his contract, that he's scheduled to become an unrestricted
free agent, and again paraphrasing, will hope to pull that
(30:14):
clip for later on in the show, but that Jim
Utherford said that the Canucks might go out of their
way to improve the roster, and Quinn Hughes still might
go and that you know, Quinn Hughes or not, they
have to improve the roster. There wasn't a lot of
reassurance there, and we're seeing this in the inbox. Wasn't
(30:35):
a lot of reassurance there for Canuck fans that number
forty three is to stick around. So that definitely stuck out.
The other clip for me, that stuck out, And it
took a while for them to get there because Adam
Foot started off talking about the skate test and how
impressed he was with the players and somebody Adam might
(30:58):
have taken it on upon him else to talk about this,
but that Elias Petterson did very well at the skate test.
His conditioning is a question. He said that he did
well at the skate test. Elias Petterson did well at
the skate test and that he wouldn't have put up
the number that he did at this skate test, which
was done a couple of years ago. Remember Travis Green
(31:19):
used to do in the middle of camp, but not
to Adam Foot, that he wouldn't have put up that
number last year. So that's that's reassuring for Kannak fans.
And and you know, you bulk up thirteen plus pounds,
you wonder about things like conditioning. It seems that initially anyway,
that won't be that won't be an issue this time around,
(31:40):
you would hope.
Speaker 4 (31:41):
So by all accounts, Patterson had a good summer, no injuries,
He's coming into camp, good skate test, like all the
other guys. It's a very positive positive thing. If you
take the clock back twelve months ago, it wasn't good done.
But we're hearing a lot more positivity around Ellie and
his summer as opposed to twelve months ago.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
The only disappointment from that for me anyway. And it's
still going on, and if some news breaks from what
they're talking about at this moment, will clip it and
present it to our audience. But I was hoping somebody
would ask them their reaction to j T Miller being
named Captain Rangers. There's a lot of people who really
(32:25):
don't care about that. I think those three would be
would be three of these. Okay, let's take a break.
We've got to move quickly here. We've got some catching
up to do breakwise, so we'll do that now. We'll
be back with more Connuct news and more of Donny
and Dolly the team on check. Next press conference still
(32:49):
going on as we speak at Rogers' Arena with the
Connuck's ahead of training camp which opens to moral in Penticton.
Wadling Dog poll question to experience one of Victoria's iconic destinations, sleep,
sip and stock up on one legendary spot, come sit
and stay at the Dog today, Rick. The poll question
focused on two of the gentlemen we're talking. We are
(33:11):
talking right now at Rogers Arena.
Speaker 4 (33:13):
Absolutely the Waddling Dog pull question, Ryan get her up
and it is is this a make or break season
for Jim Rutherford Patrick Alvin with the Canucks. Eighty two
percent say yes, eighteen percent say no, five hundred and
sixty one votes already usually with this owner, As Patrick
Johnson said, Donny, you get.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
Four years, but.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
Jim Benning Lester, Jim Benning, Jim, Jim got a whole
lot more than four years because the owner got to
play GM that's why. And the owner Jim kept telling
the owner two years, give me two years, give me
two years, and kept falling for it. And Jim got
to last eight years. That's not Patrick Alvin's not going
to get eight years to fix this.
Speaker 3 (33:54):
There's no way. Well. I also wonder when it comes
to the management of this team. I believe that and
this is no big secret that they've got themselves a
hot commodity in Abbitsford, in Ryan Johnson, and how much
confidence do they have in him? And you'd have to
(34:16):
think it would be sky high given what happened with
the Abbotsford Canucks last year and you just listened to
Ryan Johnson talk, you have to think other teams will
be pursuing him. And if things don't go well this season,
if they're like last season, if they can improve the roster,
if there's no hope for the future, you'd have to
think that a move will be made. They don't want
(34:38):
to lose that guy. Yeah, and you might, you know,
like Manny Mahultre as a coach, but that's another story altogether, who,
by the way, extended his contract at Abbitsford yesterday.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
Right now in Abbsburg, they've got Mahultra, Ryan Johnson and
the Sedine Twins. It's a great setup, great setup for development,
great set up. It's forty five minutes away down It's
a good set up in Abbitsburg right now.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Okay. Also, after we cut away from the media gathering
at Rogers Arena, Jim Rutherford I was believe I believe
it was him who talked about another pressing issue with
the Vankorver Canucks, and that is a practice facility. And
Jim Rutherford said that they are closing in. The Canucks
(35:20):
are closing in finally on a practice facility. And keep
in mind, we talk about this a lot. The Canucks
Calgaries getting one, are going to be the only team
without a practice facility in the entire National Hockey League.
And Ricky had something to say about that.
Speaker 4 (35:33):
Oh no, I just wonder if that Bill Copeland area,
Donnie read it's across the eight rinks, right, I wonder
if that area they've looked Burnaby Lake area, Yeah, Burnaby
Lake they've looked at bill Copeland.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
Before, which is existing, right, and so they do they
add on to that.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
But it's not far away down once you get on
the highway from first Apps. It's not super far away. No,
I'm just saying it's off the highway and keep in mind.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
And you know, seems like yesterday. The Knucks did have
a practicing facility at eight Rinks, which is across the
street from Bill Copland Arena. And one of the reasons
they had practice facilities weren't as big a thing in
the National Hockey League back then, but this is when
that was when the Grizzlies were around, and the ice
wasn't always in at Rogers Arena, which is still the case.
(36:22):
But they felt it was a good idea to be
able to practice regularly in one location. And they were
at a rinks all the time. It was a pretty
good setup.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
They've looked at Bill Copeland before. I just wonder if
they keep looking there.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
Okay, how do we do for time? Right? Okay, we
got time for the Rutherford clip, not the one on
EP but the one on yeah, the one on Elias Peterson. Okay,
let's do that.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
This is.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
Adam Foot and Jim Rutherford talking about one of the
other big issues with the Canucks Elias Petterson's fitness.
Speaker 5 (37:00):
I can just tell you what I heard. I didn't
go to visit him in Sweden, and I have seen
him a few times since he's back, and I know
he put the work in and I think we also
know he didn't a year ago. And success comes with preparation,
and I believe all of our players, and especially Pete,
(37:23):
has worked very hard this summer. So now the test
test starts tomorrow. It's why we have camp, why we
play the games. But I do believe he's committed to
be the player that we all expect him to be,
and we're all hoping that that starts right from game one.
Speaker 7 (37:43):
Yeah, I mean Pete, like for me coming over within
four days, that commitment, having those conversations open book. He
really wants to continue to grow. Obviously, you see maturity
happen throughout where. Testing the first test he did very well,
(38:04):
and it's a type of test that if he did
the work in the summer compared to last year, he
might not.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
He had to do the work to get the number,
and it's a great start and I'm looking forward to
working with them and I think as teammates too. Leadership
Group they're all they're.
Speaker 7 (38:24):
All poem for each other and helping each other get
through this and understand this process.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
And I think it's a good start for everyone to
see that.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
It's not often on this show, or on any show
around Vankru that focuses on the Canucks that there's been
a lot of positive things to be said about Eleas Petterson.
But that's real positive news today. If indeed he is
in much better shape than he was last year.
Speaker 4 (38:49):
Well, he passed the skate test and he didn't.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
Do an Oi you Levy.
Speaker 4 (38:54):
He didn't do an Oli you levey lying on the
ice behind the net at Abmsford. He didn't do that.
It's all good news for the Canucks today. Today is
all about optimism. You got to sell hope. What are
they doing today on that on that panel or whatever
it is, they're selling hope.
Speaker 3 (39:09):
You know everyone's zero's you some extent.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
Yeah, but Donnie, everyone zero zero zero today? Right, Yeah,
I mean today you can you can speak glowingly about
Evander Kaine, you can speak glowingly about your prospects, called
their cup, all these guys. The bullets fly in the
opener regular season.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
But you know, positive news for the Canucks with Peterson,
positive news for him. I just you know, could you imagine,
you know, as somebody who wears an a who's been
around for eight years by the way, yes, signs that big,
big deal, lots of money walking into that dressing room
and you're out of shape. Yeah, you know, and not good.
That was the case last year and obviously it got
(39:45):
on knocking well in one player's nerves and looks like
that's not the case this time around.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
He got a ma surity there. He got the message.
Petterson got the message that this is Vancouver. I can't
do that two years.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
In a row.
Speaker 4 (39:58):
I can't show up. I don't know how you do
it one year. But well he got the message. Message received.
Bottom line with Peterson, good for him.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
Let's do some business. Then we'll take another break. Wednesday.
Able Auctions will sell today, Ryan, Is that right? Next Wednesday?

closed metal fabrication shop, hundreds of pieces of equipment, including

Speaker 3 (41:43):
Adventure starts here. Just I had a big ride. The
Twitter guy, we were just talking about this. I don't
know about you, but some people confused about Adam Foot
talking about having to cover Palvel Burray. Yes, at the
I love that. Yeah, the fact he brought up one
of arguably the greatest player in Cannuck's history, number one,
(42:06):
right up there, well, right up there with the Quinn Hughes.
And you know, a good example of what you have
to do. You have to be aware of everybody on
the ice. And hey, you know he's a head coach now,
but once a player, always a player. Once a great defense,
it's always a great defense.
Speaker 4 (42:21):
I wouldn't have wanted have been a defenseman when Burray
was on the ice.
Speaker 3 (42:24):
Good lord, I got with Adam Foot was talking about
you guys, got a little confused. Hey, And of course
you would love that because it was a ninety four.
Speaker 4 (42:33):
Yeah, one of your BFFs there. I think you called
him pav regularly because you were so tight with him.
Speaker 3 (42:39):
By the way, Okay, smart ass. We'll move on from that.
But the press conference, I don't if it's still going.
Speaker 4 (42:45):
It's gone.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
It's not. It's okay, But there was something else they said.
We mentioned that after we left them that they talked
about a practice facility that they're closing in on a
practice facility again about time. We believe we're talking about
the Bill Cole the facility in North Burnaby.
Speaker 17 (43:02):
They had multiple sites. Rosemary, Where was that brown? That's
the photo we showed.
Speaker 3 (43:09):
Yeah, yeah, that's that's in South Burnaby. Yeah it's a
year old if that.
Speaker 4 (43:15):
Yeah, I mean Burnaby work. I said this on the
Rick on Friday, this is the middle of the Lower
Man exactly.
Speaker 17 (43:21):
I'm nervous about this, Like we've showed these videos of
all these practice facilities being.
Speaker 4 (43:26):
Built, state of the art, they're built for this.
Speaker 17 (43:28):
I'm nervous that they're going to partner with an arena,
throw their logo up, say it's their facility, and that's
gonna be about it.
Speaker 4 (43:36):
I mean, well, it's better than what they have now,
which is nothing. I understand that.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
But these things art.
Speaker 17 (43:41):
There's kitchens and lounges and offices and multiple sheets all
that stuff.
Speaker 3 (43:45):
Hold on a second, you'll see probably uh a better
version of what we saw at eight Rings, which wasn't bad.
They basically duplicated the way the the way the extress
to him, looked at what was then GM place. Yeah,
it was basically the same and there were facilities there.
(44:05):
Now it wasn't like the Panthers or yeah, why you're
competing against but it's it would be better than what
they have you have now, and I'm sure they would,
they would make improve.
Speaker 4 (44:16):
You're not getting the brand new buy land, build new,
you gotta have. It's true because of real estate Mogo.
That's an understanding that.
Speaker 3 (44:23):
That's the frustrating part what you just said right there.
Speaker 4 (44:26):
If you buy the land and then you gotta go
to the city, the loopholes, all that crap, you'll be two, three,
four years down the road. You're right, you want you
want the brand new shiny toy. You gonna take time.
Speaker 17 (44:35):
I mean, I guess Utah there's no loopholes or anything.
They're giving away land for free, right Florida say Seattle, Seattle.
I guess land is cheap too. You think city hall
in Utah is the same as city Hall in Vancouver.
It's a major city. I mean, come on, what it's
Vancouver insanely difficult.
Speaker 3 (44:50):
To work with. The bottom line is they missed the boat.
They missed the boat that you can't. You know, it's
a big mistake. It's seems like a giant mistake.
Speaker 4 (45:01):
And we'll see how they fix it. So we'll see
how they fix.
Speaker 3 (45:03):
There, you go. Yeah, and I think it worked in
the nineties when they had that practice facility at eight
Rinks to some extent. Grizzlies went away, the practice facility
went away. We'll see what they could. I mean, it
is frustrating because you've got an owner who's a land
baron and they did say it didn't foresee this. That's frustrating.
You can't do anything about it. They're not gonna buy
(45:25):
a property in downtown Vancouver, and you know they're not
gonna they're not gonna buy the property that the Hudson
base sits on. Dormit right right now, it's not gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (45:34):
Well, and they had traction that'd be great though, they
had traction with UBC and there were some plans made up.
But then again, the owner wants everything, you know, eighty
percent off. So that's what that's what worries me.
Speaker 17 (45:45):
So like if if that's the thought, that's the assumption,
I don't know is he actually gonna like they're just
gonna call Bill Copeland the Canucks ice plex and that's
all they do.
Speaker 4 (45:59):
It'll be interesting.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
See.
Speaker 17 (46:00):
The other thing is they got under the goaltending rick.
You've been talking about this a lot. This player a
lot Medvedev, who drafted the Russian So Patrick Alvin said,
when it comes to goaltending, I truly believe that with
the addition of Medvedev this summer, our goalie pipeline is
probably the strongest one in the NHL.
Speaker 4 (46:19):
I agree with that statement. It's a pretty big statement.
He's really good guys and you talk to people in
Ontario about him. The Canucks are lucky. There was a
team in the first round, okay that was not stop.
He's the goalie of the future. I'm not afraid to
say it.
Speaker 3 (46:31):
Done.
Speaker 4 (46:32):
Goalie the future is still the goal Brian Burke, that's
one comment Brian would like back. But there was a
team in the first round that was really debating whether
to take Medvedev and he ends up with the conduction
the second This is a good goaltender, high high character.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
There's a giant gest risk with this comment, and that's
Thatcher Demko's time, and you know, and when you talk
about this season so much, of it. So much of
the Canucks' success rests on two things. Elias Petterson getting
back to Lea being Elas Petterson and being fit. Looks
like that the second part of that equation has been
(47:09):
taken care of again, looks like it, at least initially,
and Thatcher Dempco's health goes health and it gets back
to being well. See what I said about him, and
I'll say it about the same thing I said about
Elias Petterson gets back to being thataer Dempko, and they
focus on defense, which they're gonna have to. I'll talk
about that in our next segment maybe then. Who knows
(47:30):
what could happen? So much is yeah, it looks like
they have some a really strong amount of depth when
it comes to goaltending, but it's all about Poplatias there.
Speaker 4 (47:42):
If this isn't a Stanley Cup contender, you're gonna have
to wait, Rutherford said. Again, You're gonna have to wait
for the ten game segment, the fifteen game segment, in
the twenty and then they'll figure out and go from there.
Speaker 17 (47:52):
Well, Rutherford said, eighty two game segment. Rutherford said, again,
everything goes right. It's the second time he's used that
in his term here.
Speaker 3 (47:59):
Well that's good because the first time he used it. Yeah,
I had a great season.
Speaker 4 (48:02):
Yeah that's true, that is true. Uh uh, we gotta
get out of here. For John Shannon.
Speaker 17 (48:06):
I do want to remind everyone though you're sending in
a lot of good submissions in the Bayside Oceanfront Resort inbox.
We'll get to them as the show progresses, so keep
sending them in a lot of positivity in the inbox
out of especially about Hughes. After what Jim Rotherfor had
to say, there's a lot of people saying you should package.
Speaker 3 (48:22):
Bag stuff to run that clip, right.
Speaker 4 (48:23):
Yeah, yeah, we'll get to we'll get to it.
Speaker 17 (48:25):
We did have a loaded second hour of the program
still had including John Shannon.
Speaker 3 (48:28):
It wasn't Sunshine and Rainbows.

Ron Toygo and company twenty five years old, this season
(49:30):
seems like yesterday. I remember you doing the play by
play you for the first broadcast You and I had
the radio show.
Speaker 4 (49:36):
Remember a toy Go Bonner, Gordi Howe all came into studio.
Speaker 3 (49:40):

John Shannon joins us now from the one hundred Percent
Hockey Podcast and the one hundred percent Canucks Podcast. Thanks
for doing this, sir.
Speaker 18 (50:00):
How are you great boys? How are you guys?
Speaker 3 (50:03):
Lovely pantecting the course with people who aren't aware of
don't tune in regularly.
Speaker 4 (50:07):
Just down the road from where you grew up in
Oliver Yeah.
Speaker 18 (50:10):
Twenty seven miles. Yeah, it's exactly the twenty seven miles.
On a good day, it was twenty seven minutes. On
a bad day, it was twenty nine.
Speaker 3 (50:20):
One of the great hockey facilities in Canada if you
ask me this, so it is South Okanagan Event Center. Hey, Johnny,
I know you watched the press conference with the Canucks.
Did anything stand out for you with Rutherford, Alvin and Foot.
Speaker 18 (50:35):
You know what, I just a personal comment. You gotta
just love how transparent Jim Rutherford is. I mean, you
just you have to enjoy and I know that I
know that he creates angst when we're talking about Quinn
Hughes in the next twenty four months. But at the
(50:55):
same time, you just have to love his transparency that
you know, he tries to be as honest as possible,
tries to make sure that everybody feels that they are
that much closer to the organization. And and you know,
and even what Patrick said, trying to trying to find
a way to get a second line center and something
we knew all summer long that they were trying to do.
(51:18):
I thought it was you know, I'm not sure it
was always the news that knuck fans wanted to hear.
But I do think that it's something that I think
that you're you're closer being you know, following the organization.
You feel better that these guys are not afraid to
tell the truth.
Speaker 3 (51:33):
As far as the new head coach goes. Jim roth Thefford,
speaking of being honest, he compared Adam Foot to Rod Brindemore,
who has gone on to great things with Carolina. Do
you do you remember what the general feeling was about
Rod Brindemore back in twenty eighteen when he took over
the Carolina Hurricanes with no head coaching experience in the
(51:54):
National Hockey League, much like Adam.
Speaker 18 (51:57):
Well. The one thing that you know, he was on
the bench a great deal in those days in Carolina,
and I think if if anything, the thought process was
that you know, they were, you know, they were going
to go cheap in Carolina. But what quickly happened was
they realized that, you know, Rod the Bod was the
(52:20):
real deal and that that it it paid off in
spades and and in many ways in the last two
contract negotiations, Rod has done a really good job of
protecting his coaching staff and and certainly created an aura
in that franchisees Hockey Operations Group. I mean, they've done
(52:40):
a magnificent job there. The Hurricanes still have a few
things to fix, but it certainly isn't because Rod hasn't
delivered on every aspect of what was expected to him
as the head coach. It's when when I heard that today,
that's a lofty expectation for Adam and you know that's
(53:03):
internal pressure from the organization on what Adam Foot can do.
The other thing is, I do think that the Connects
have done a good job surrounding Adam with with really good,
solid people like Kevin Dean and Scott Young and and
that will help the organization as it goes forward.
Speaker 4 (53:20):
John, We of course will be watching Quinn Hughes. You
watch Mitch Marner leave Toronto last year. Connor McDavid hasn't signed.
Everyone's freaking out in ebonton what's the latest with McDavid.
What's going on here? Why doesn't he signed?
Speaker 18 (53:39):
Well, I don't think he's in any hurry to sign.
I mean this anticipation that you have to be signed
before the season starts is a myth. You know, take
your time, understand where things are we've all heard Connor
say the same thing since he's returned to Ebonton with
the Captain skates and doing interviews, is that he wants
(54:02):
to win in twenty five twenty six. So he's basically
said that we're going to take that period of time
to judge whether this is a place they want to
be long term and want to win long term. And
then Stan Bowman did his press conference this morning in
Edmonton just prior to the Vancouver Guys, and Stan Bowman said, listen,
(54:23):
we've had lots of discussions with Connor, but none of
them are about money, none of them are about term.
It's all about winning and that's what Connor McDavid wants
to make sure there is the possibility long term, not
this season, but long term of winning in Edmonton.
Speaker 4 (54:41):
Well, I think he wants a situation that is in
Florida where guys are taking less so he doesn't get
twenty million, there's no more money left to build around
a winner. Look at that Glad Marshawn Bennett all took less.
Sam Reinar from North Vancouver took less in Florida. Is
that the way now is to build such a good
operation the guys are willing to take less to go there.
Speaker 18 (55:03):
I think that's always been the way in the cap era. Yeah, Rick,
I think that's and and I've been on a bit
of a soap brox in the last couple of weeks
about this one is that it shouldn't be the player's
responsibility to manage the salary cap. You have to respect
the player's short term lifespan as a pro player, and
(55:26):
really he should be in a position to make as
much money as you can. I mean, that's what that's
what collective bargaining is all about. That's what the collective
bargaining Agreement has created. And every one of these guys,
whether it's Connor McDavid or eventually Quinn Hughes or Caprisov
or Kyle Connor in Winnipeg, they all have earned the
(55:46):
right to go to unrestricted free agency in the in
their in their in their professional careers. And this is
just the cycle of what we're seeing in professional sports,
and hockey still is way behind in many ways what
we see in certainly in in the NBA and certainly
(56:07):
in the National Football League. So to have a player
for as long as the Oilers have had McDavid or
in the end, how long the Canucks will have quinn Ughes.
Then at a certain point they have earned the right
to decide where they want to play the game, and
you have to respect that.
Speaker 3 (56:27):
Do you understand why the Rangers named JT. Miller their captain? John?
Speaker 18 (56:32):
No, but I got I got a chuckle out of it.
Speaker 3 (56:35):
It was good for us yesterday. I had a good day,
you know.
Speaker 18 (56:38):
I we all know that he is a leader. We've
we've always assumed that. You know, early in his career,
everybody just thought he had a chip on his shoulder
and he was bossy. You know, there was a time
in Vancouver that if you had said, once Bo got traded,
why isn't J. T. Miller the captain? You I don't
think anybody would have been surprised about that. So I
(57:00):
think that he's always had it in it. I also
think the Rangers are trying to change a bit of
their culture too, you know, and you Chris Drury is
trying to change things in New York. And you see
that when players are moved like Jacob Truba, and you
see that with what happened with Chris Krider. So all
of a sudden, in trying to change that culture. Drury
(57:24):
has said, we're going to go with the hard nosed guy,
you know, and it may pay off. Chris Drury is
you know, is he beats to a different drum all
the time anyway, and so this one should not this
one should not be a surprise that we've seen this
from from Drury, who does these things his own way,
(57:44):
and I think he respects for a guy like Jad
Miller to be outspoken.
Speaker 3 (57:48):
John, we've got a little bit of time here. I
want to get your your thoughts on this because you've
been with all due respect, you've been around a while
and I don't know if this story has got enough traction.
But former LPA executive director Bob goodnow passes away at
the age of seventy two. What impact did he have
on the National Hockey League, on the game of hockey?
(58:10):
A couple of lockouts, salary cap disclosure, There's a lot there,
John Well.
Speaker 18 (58:17):
The last thing you said, I think was the probably
and might might be the biggest aspect of what Bob
brought to the table was making sure that there was
salary disclosure and making sure that you know, players signing
new deals helped other players get better deals, and by
the way in all these discussions we've talked about with
(58:39):
unrestricted free agents, make no mistake about it, there is
a great deal of information that goes to and from
the Players Association to assist agents and assist players that
started with Bob Goodnow. What I can tell you is
that Bob did something at a very difficult time in
the in the history of the of the union, was
to galvs the group. Remember how bad things were at
(59:02):
the end of the Allen eagleson Eradoni and it was
it was somebody like Goodnow who took all of this
on his under his shoulder and said, I can do this,
and I can make this group stand as one. And
that's exactly what it is. He galvanized the players union.
Salary disclosure was early on one of the most important things.
(59:24):
At the same time, they were able to improve the
marketing of players, the marketing of the NHLPA logo. You
then what you saw was the ability for the players
to build a war chest that allowed them to be
in a position to stand up to the league so
there was no fears of people losing too much money
(59:46):
during those workstoppages. Bob Goodnow did all that. What he
did was even though he lost the fight for the
salary cap. I would tell you right now that Bob
Goodnow is the reason right now that we are talking
about a partnership between the players and the league on
a daily basis.
Speaker 3 (01:00:04):
He started the conversation. God bless them, John, Thanks for this.
We'll talk to you next week. I know you'd love
to be in in Penticton, but we will talk to
you next.
Speaker 18 (01:00:14):
Penticton at this time of year is so beautiful, and
you're right about the arena, and maybe we should just
I know toy Goo is watching because he'll be ticked
that I'm gonna wish the v's luck on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (01:00:25):
Oh but you know what, I still go to I
still get a triple O.
Speaker 18 (01:00:30):
I still get a triple O. So he'll be happy
in the end.
Speaker 3 (01:00:33):
Ye'll pass the message on to him hard pride to me.
He's watching, of course, John.
Speaker 4 (01:00:38):
Thanks for this next week, jerious, you bet you remember.
Speaker 3 (01:00:43):
I don't know if you're old enough, but what a
big deal salary disclosure was Like we're feeling salaries and
a lot of players, a lot of people were, No,
you can't do that. I don't want to. That's too
that's too private. It's too personal. What's happened since then? Oh,
salaries have gone skyrow.
Speaker 4 (01:01:00):
Websites everywhere where you can get everyone's salary done in
the American League and the East Coast League and the
NHL everywhere.
Speaker 3 (01:01:09):
You know, let's go back to the day. They don't
want to go back to these days. You know, Gordy
how packing them in and Detroit and other arenas. You know,
what did he get his first training camp? Like a
couple hundred bucks in a team jacket? It wasn't fair. Okay,
we'll update the poll question and deal more with what
we heard from the Canucks next. Donnie Dolly the team,
(01:01:30):
won't you?

Speaker 4 (01:02:29):
Rick Ryan, get her up the waddling Dog pole question.
Is this a make or break season for Jim Rutherford
and Patrick Alvin? Eighty three percent say yes, eighteen percent
say no. Six hundred and seventy five votes already, So
yeah it is. Last year was a big disappointment, Donnie.
They've been here four years now, right, so they've had
(01:02:49):
ample time to turn it around. And when we say
turn it around, we mean a playoff team every year.
You know, since twenty eleven the Canucks have not gone
to the playoffs to back years. That's fourteen years. Don
When you hire guys like Rutherford, you want that ability
to make the playoffs every year, not just make it
(01:03:09):
once next season out, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:03:12):
So what determines decisions more than anything and money? Yeah,
can you sell your the ranks full, Donny, the rings full? Sure?
But you know, hope that and look and I still
maintained that and a lot of people disagree with me.
I've seen, well the calls see him and during the
(01:03:33):
Mesca era, I've seen what was then GMP place and
going back to the Sea, I've seen I've seen empty seats.
If you're not winning and you're not providing any hope
for your franchise, what will that mean for your revenue?
What will that mean money wise? If you can't sell
these guys anymore, they're going to be out the door. Absolutely,
(01:03:57):
is this season make or break? We'll see, but it
seems to be going that way. I think this management
group has confidence that if they can stay healthy, even
without J. T. Miller, they'll get back to some extent
where they were a couple of seasons ago. Which would
which would sell Donnie.
Speaker 4 (01:04:14):
I don't think you would have to fire Rutherford if
this season goes backwards. I think he's at that age
where you know, if you lose Quinn and you don't
make the playoffs, he'd probably retire anyways. I think you
know he came here to win and not go back
to back years without playoffs. I think Alvin this is
a very important year for him. I think if you
(01:04:34):
miss playoffs two years in a row, I think he
would be in danger for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:04:38):
I doubt though Jim Wanting, I don't care what age is,
he would he's a competitor, he's an ex athlete. He
doesn't he wouldn't want to go out that way.
Speaker 4 (01:04:45):
If they lose Quinn Hughes, they might have to do
what you've been harping on for four years now, rebuild,
And he ain't going to stick around for a rebuild.
Speaker 3 (01:04:54):
Don He's not. I found it really interesting John Shannon's
answer when you asked him about what's going on in
Ebonson and stan Bowman and company did what the Canucks
did today. They held a press conference going into training camp,
but of course the number one subject was what about
Connor McDavid's future. And John said, we haven't got the
(01:05:17):
clips yet from Stan Bowman that Stan Bowman claims, and
who's not not to believe him that most of the
talk with Connor McDavid when they get together to negotiate,
they don't talk about money. They talk about what about
this team? What about its future? AI, what about the
ability to win a Stanley Cup? They've come close the
last couple of years, but what about going forward? Getting
(01:05:40):
over the hump? You know, improving the goaltending, what about
you know, young players, what's there? What's in the vault
for the Oilers? And they talk about winning more and
you have to think that Quinn Eves knows he's going
to get paid, but what about his legacy? What about
winning a Stanley Cup. That's obviously going to be part
of the negotiations come next summer with the Canucks.
Speaker 4 (01:05:59):
And here's one for you. Connor McDavid gets a blank check.
It's where do you want to sign?
Speaker 3 (01:06:04):
How much?
Speaker 4 (01:06:05):
Connor McDavid gets what he wants in Edmonton. He's asking
them right now, can you guys win in three to
five years? I don't want to go to the Stanley
Cup finals keep losing. I want to win the Stanley Cup. Okay,
that's what the fight. I believe we've got time for this.
But we just talked about Quinn Hughes's future. Here's we
got the clip.
Speaker 3 (01:06:20):
Eric, We're good. Here's Jim Rutherford talking about just that
Quinn Hugh's uncertain future with Vancouver.
Speaker 5 (01:06:29):
It's always important to win, and especially in this situation,
we're a little bit caught in between when you how
far do you go to do that? Which means how
many draft picks do you want to trade and how
(01:06:50):
many of the of the future do you want to trade?
Because you could do that and he could make a
decision to go somewhere else non related to how the
team does, or you just go all in and see
(01:07:11):
where it goes. I mean, it's what I did when
I managed in Pittsburgh. We knew we had a chance
to win cups and that was the direction from ownership,
and that's what we did. So we're always going to
try to improve the team and have a better team.
Speaker 3 (01:07:29):
But it gets.
Speaker 5 (01:07:33):
The first thing that Patrick hears when he calls somebody
about a player is Okay, no problem, we want first
round pick or a couple of first round picks, or
your top prospects and things like that, And that becomes
the juggling act. As you do that, your team's a
lot better, your team has success.
Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
And he may.
Speaker 5 (01:07:57):
For different reasons, reasons that we would all consider doing.
Speaker 3 (01:08:02):
It's not just him.
Speaker 5 (01:08:05):
He may consider that he he would prefer to be
somewhere different geographically, for example. You know, I mean the
biggest topic we all talk about must play with his brothers.
I mean, think everybody knows that by now, right, But
doesn't mean it has to happen two years from now
or one year from now. It could happen at the
(01:08:25):
end of their careers. So they say they played with
each other. There's so many things. I mean, you can
spend this thing a hundred different ways, and there's only
one guy that's going to make that decision, and he'll
make it for whatever reason. But we do have a responsibility,
Quinn Hughes or not to have to put the best
(01:08:46):
team on the ice weekend. And that's what Patrick has
to work on. He has to continue to work on
that through the first half of the season to improve
our team.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
Okay, so there words a kind of president Jim bro
basedid ocean Front resort inbox. I want to read it early.
Speaker 4 (01:09:04):
Is it just me?
Speaker 3 (01:09:04):
And we'll try to get more submissions. We'll try to
read more submissions with what time we have left. But
is it just me? Unsigned? Rutherford's answer about Hughes isn't reassuring.
Sounds like Quinn has one foot out the door and
the midway part of the season will be telling and
Alvin has to ensure he has a handle on it
either way. By that point. Hopefully the Canucks will finally
(01:09:25):
learn to play chess not checkers. It was interesting there.
Jim Rutherford didn't say anything to the effect of Quinn,
who was just staying here. He wasn't, you know, extremely
positive when it came to his response to that question.
And I think what a lot of people found alarming.
And this wasn't the only text like this, but that
(01:09:46):
you know, they might improve and Quin Hughes might still go.
I talked about it earlier, and you know, also Quinn
Hughes or not, they have to improve the hockey club.
But there wasn't a definite. Hey, this guy's going to
stay no matter what he's been He's been honest. John
sh talked about it. I do admire Jerr Muthafford for that. Donnie.
Speaker 4 (01:10:04):
This this year is huge. Make the playoffs, it'll help
keep Quinn. If you don't make the playoffs, it's not
gonna help you. He's been here six years, he's made
the playoffs twice, he's missed four times. So if they
missed this year, it'll be five and a seven. Make
the playoffs, it'll help you. But he won't guarantee that
he's going to stay done. It's not going to guarantee
he's gonna stay.
Speaker 3 (01:10:23):
But you know my asterisk there. I've used that word
a couple of times today. What if they don't make
the playoffs and win the lottery? Oh? Stop? Okay, so
they win the lottery? Well, why is that?
Speaker 10 (01:10:35):
So?
Speaker 3 (01:10:37):
It is kind of outrageous. I'll give you that. There's
a scenario where they don't make the playoffs, the Islanders
at the tenth best odds and they ended up winning
the lottery.
Speaker 4 (01:10:46):
So how are they gonna do this year?
Speaker 3 (01:10:47):
Done? Man? If that happens, I'm telling you right now,
I'd like to well, i'd like to see uh, you know,
I like to see you eat crow. Yeah, saying that
big times?
Speaker 16 (01:10:57):
What it?
Speaker 4 (01:10:58):
Quinn's the biggest decision if for this franchise, and I
can't even think how many years don.
Speaker 3 (01:11:02):
Okay, there's a lot to chew on, So let's do this.
Normally we would have DTMZ in the next segment. You
have some business to do. Rix will get ready for
that if you don't mind. So we'll talk more about
the connection. Catch up on some other stories around the
world of sports that we should catch up on that
have happened over the last twenty four forty eight hours,
So do some business. We'll take a break and then
(01:11:23):
we'll do what he just said. All right.
Speaker 4 (01:11:25):
Check out the largest selection of sports member billy autographed items,
trading cards and collectible games in Western Canada past Time Sports.
Look at this in language. Past Time Sports. Two signings. First,
you got Connor Garland Sunday, October fifth, Jake Debuska on Saturday,

for Jonathan Lecaravaki. Details on these events, upcoming signings and
(01:11:50):
card drops available Pastime Sports dot CAA and on their
social channels.
Speaker 3 (01:11:55):
Gavin McKenna front of the laptop.
Speaker 4 (01:11:58):
Just stop with that, dude, is you know what if
it happens, I.
Speaker 3 (01:12:01):
Honestly, I'll hold a parade.
Speaker 4 (01:12:03):
So you think an eighteen year old kid coming here
is gonna get him in the Stanley Cup.
Speaker 3 (01:12:07):
Finals next year? Come on, I hope for the future.
Speaker 17 (01:12:11):
I don't even mean I don't even believe that the
playoff spot keeps Quinn Hughes. I don't think it sways
him in any direction either way.
Speaker 3 (01:12:17):
Well, it depends how they do in the playoffs. So
they did do what they did two seasons ago, seasons.
Speaker 17 (01:12:22):
Yeah, okay, sure, I mean look at Conor McDavid just
went to back to back finals, back to back, and
one of the things he's reportedly looking at is the
future with the oiler camp and the pipeline for the oil.
Speaker 3 (01:12:37):
You're right, I mean, but okay, you've gone to back
to back Stanley Cup finals. Yes, but what does the
future look like a Admonton You've got dry sitle that
that that's fine, but young players. They lost the two
free agents last year.
Speaker 4 (01:12:53):
But that's what I'm saying. This is my point is
I'm just saying, like there's a dude that went to
back to back, might.
Speaker 3 (01:12:59):
Have been he might be thinking that was it right?
Speaker 17 (01:13:01):
And so he's looking at the outlook and going what
what is here? And so I mean Quinn's looking at
the outlook here and what is here? Brandon Coots, Jonathan M. Karamaki,
Tom Hollander, I mean, show me that path. Then this
is where this franchise is done. Too much of we
want to get in the playoffs?
Speaker 3 (01:13:21):
Who cares? Man?
Speaker 4 (01:13:22):
Who cares a we getting the playoffs?
Speaker 3 (01:13:24):
How do you win? T You roll your eyes at
me when I talk about rebuilding, No, I don't.
Speaker 4 (01:13:33):
I don't yes, you know, I roll my eyes to
you because this owner is never going to do it
and we need to turn the page.
Speaker 17 (01:13:37):
That's how you can make every respectability by making the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (01:13:41):
Care who cares to make the play don't make the playoffs,
then you're out of the playoffs every year.
Speaker 17 (01:13:47):
Right, So if you go in the playoffs and you're
making in round one or you miss the playoffs, is
there a difference, so huge difference, you get a gold
star something.
Speaker 4 (01:13:54):
Where were we here, Well, you were just talking about
Quinn Hughes. We were talking about Queen. Hey said, it's
good because look at quinn used rookie card. Okay, that's
what's in front of the laptop today.
Speaker 17 (01:14:02):
Curticy pastime Sports upper deck MBB cards twenty twenty five,
twenty six and puck signed by somebody who was that
pastime last year. Knows Hoglander from his draft year. That's
Hoglander's signature autograph. I don't see an N yeah or
an H. I see an N N an H and
A twenty one.
Speaker 3 (01:14:20):
In fact, all I see is exactly H. I just
see lines going up and down. Yeah, it almost looks
like an MS.
Speaker 4 (01:14:27):
Ah'll get we'll get nails to work on his autograph.
The same as those pharmacist guys. They just scribble. They
don't sign anything.
Speaker 3 (01:14:34):
The pharmacist lately. No, when you go there, doctors too, Yeah,
doctors do They just scrable it somehow it works or
does it?
Speaker 4 (01:14:42):
What do you mean? What do you mean you get
your prescription?
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
Oh? Yeah, yeah. They don't seem to have a problem.
Speaker 4 (01:14:48):
Wasn't that a curb episode that Larry David took a
note He scribbled, We've.
Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
Got a million things going on here. I'm not gonna
go over old curb episodes. Okay, we'll take a break
and we're gonna as part of the DTMZ segment talk
about the Cannucks and some stories that we haven't talked about. Tokay,
Donnie Dolly the team on Jack.
Speaker 4 (01:15:14):
It's eleven thirty six on a Wednesday morning. Donnie and
DOLLI are Jeck TV. No time for DTMZ. Brought to
you by the world famous Wister Golf Club Coachy Figure
out there, Great track, Great Track.
Speaker 3 (01:15:26):
DTMZ brought to you by the Arnold Palmer Design. Was
the golf club proud to be a sponsor Donnie and
Dolly throughout our extensive golf course renovation. The wist of
golf Club looks forward to welcoming guests back in the
summer of twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 4 (01:15:38):
They're going all out to improve.
Speaker 3 (01:15:42):
Their layout. Okay, so a little bit different here was
gonna do birthdays, but a little bit of a different
approach on DTMZ right now, just getting caught up on
some of the stories that we didn't have time for earlier.
Speaker 1 (01:15:53):
Today.
Speaker 3 (01:15:53):
Give them what the Canucks were up to. I do
want to mention this one other note from the Canucks.
I found it in interesting that Adam Foot talked about
and again I'm paraphrasing, but backchecking, and it seems like,
well he hinted that that was a problem last year.
He's the they have to get back quicker, they have
(01:16:15):
to outnumber the opponent in their own zone. So obviously
maybe it was a shot at JT. Miller, who's had
backchecking issues in the past. I'm not so sure, but
he felt that was very, very important. I wanted to
run this. This is from yesterday and our friend, your friend,
my friend, Joey Kenwer tweeted this out yesterday, and I
(01:16:38):
think it's very important because it involves BC athletes at
the World Track and Field Championships. Gold medals for Ethan
Katzberg of Nanaimo and the men's hammer throw, Cameron Rodgers
from Richmond in the women's hammer throw, and Evan Dunphy
