Nothing Blue with Don Taylor?

Speaker 3 (00:26):

Speaker 4 (00:41):
It is Friday, and this is Donnie and Dolly the
team on Check. I am Ryan Henderson sitting in for
Donnie today, Rick Dolly Wall joining me.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
How are you their lovely couldn't be better? It's Friday, TG,
I have you always you get scared when you say that,
Thank God it's Friday. Yeah, we never said that in
the eighties. It's so big. The kids use it now.
I don't know they not. Not a ton of kids
use it now. I don't think TGI.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
I don't think so, right, Derek Wong, of course here
as long as well as Nina savage. On the other side,
we appreciate them. And the rain is coming, Ricky, did
you see this tomorrow. I'm so happy. It's about time
that Derek and I got into an argument the other
day because the other day was like thirty degrees. That
Tuesday was like thirty thirty degrees and Langley like summer

(01:27):
came back. No, I'm done after September first. No, no
more warm temperatures.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
That's it. I'm okay with the rain, but not dog
owners have a tough time. I know, I know it's
I got to take him out. I got to put
on his little jacket. He's got a rain jack. He's
got a jacket. You gotta buy a rain jacket, Leo
for the dogs. I mean Ryan, I'm Ryan. You're Ryan,
not your dog. Leo's my dog. But I got Australian shepherd,
beautiful little ni a mini. Yeah, the Australian Shepherds get big. Yeah,

(01:56):
he's a little mini and we bought him a range jacket.
But I gotta take them. Does he have a hood?
No not, there's no hood, just the rain jacket. And
then you gotta take him out in the rain. Yeah,
and you know he's gotta you know, go to the
washroom and you gotta get him as extra exercise. Yeah, yeah,
it's it's tough in the rain with dogs. Well then
you have neighbors you run into too that I ran

(02:19):
into one last night, Kelly, who got us another one
as well? You just got a dog. I saw him
walking the dog last night.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
See, unfortunately we our dog passed a couple of years back,
but we we didn't. I was always torn about the
jacket thing, whether or not they should they do they
really need the jacket.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
And the other one is the booty. Have you seen
thet because when you bring him in, you gotta know
that's the other thing that Yeah, that's usually what we did.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
We just you know, dry off our dog with a towel. Anyway,
aside from the rain, there's a lot happening this weekend
on the Vancouver sports scene. Of course with the Vancouver Caducks.
It's day two of training camp up in pitt Ticton.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
We'll get into a lot of that, but also happening
the BC Lions big game in Calgary this evening, Oh boy,
six thirty pm kickoff Nathan Rourke versus Vernon Adams and
by the way, it's the they're gonna play twice in
the two weeks here because they're gonna be back and beach.
She plays till bey fourth. Look, this is a big game.
I'll be Ricky will be on his couch tonight. The

(03:17):
crown just stop, let me finish. This is a big one.
I'll be on the couch, yep, ready for this. Lines
are banged up, especially on offense, running back, a receiver
might be out, offensive lineman, so that that that hurts. Yeah,
But Nathan Rourke right now, to me is the best
player in the CFLU and he's doing his best. Lines.

(03:37):
Defense has got to pick it up. We know that
they're a little bit better. Last week horrible and Outawa
horrible in Toronto past three weeks. But you know what,
if they come out tonight the offense is good and
the defense can hold, Calgary could be a big win tonight.
You just said it.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
By the way, Rick Nathan Rourke, this curtsy. Matt Baker
thirty or more points in six straight games, something that
has not happen and since nineteen ninety one. And Doug
Flutie at the quarterback position thirty points of more in
six straight games.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Yorks offense. Doug Fluty did that in nineteen ninety one
eight times in a row, and Nathan's at six. Yeah.
Nathan has just been great this year. Yeah, and absolutely
the BC line should not have should not be under
five hundred. This should be over. Yeah. I totally missed
two games and they blew about three games in the
last minute because of the defense. They are better in

(04:26):
their record. Yep.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
So that's the Lions again six thirty tonight in Calgary
White Caps. Tomorrow in Kansas City they take on Sporting KC.
That's at five thirty our time. We have head coach
Yesper Sorenson coming up at eleven am. I cannot believe
this rake, but it's the first time since early early
I keep saying October for some reason, August early August

(04:48):
that the Caps are on a road on the road
for an MLS game. They have been at home for
a while. There's been a break in there as well.
Hasn't been the entire time, but first time since early August.
They're gonna play an MLS game on the road, so
that'll be an adjustment for them. We should note the
WHL Giants home opener versus the Penticton vs. At the
NC tomorrow night. Have you made a decision yet you're

(05:09):
going to the game? I'm on the fence.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Twenty fifth campaign, twenty five year the Vancouver Giants have
been in the Lower Mainland. Look at this, Yeah, I
remember year one. You were on the call. Yeah, that's right,
And you know what, just a great entertainment. I talked
to a lot of Western hockey leage people this this week.
The Giants should be contending for the BC Division title.

(05:31):
They should be one of the two to four top
teams in the Western Conference. They got the kid Ryan Lynn,
who's gonna go high in the NHL draft, the defenseman
from Richmond. Get out there, go see the Giants. Good
Canadian kids, and they're gonna be kicking off the year tonight.
And it's going to be a good team in Vancouver
this year. And a reminder, five o'clock they're starting their
outdoor barbecue before think you're going at seven. So there's

(05:55):
a lot of things happening at the LAC. We should mention,
by the way, Penticton in Victoria tonight for the Royals.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
They take on The Royals take on Pentticton tonight seven
o'clock in Victoria so and Penticton's a Western Hockey expansion
team first year.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
They were in the BC Hockey League for years and
years and years and years. Well, one more I want
to get in tonight. My buddy Stu Walter's texted me,
good guy, UBC Thunderbird's football team at home to Calgary tonight,
big homecoming game six o'clock at Thunderbird Stadium out at UBC. Excellent,
excellent stuff.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
So lots of activities on the sporting landscape that you
can partake in over the weekend if you'd like.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
We should have mentioned very very quickly as well.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
The Jays have a chance to punch their tickets to
the postseason. Today the Jas started series against the Royals,
and in a bigger series is the Mariners are in
Houston to take on the Astros. They're tied right now
top of the Als, so that is a massive series
for the Mariners. Okay, Penticton Yesterday, Vancouver Canks day one
of training camp. In the books, of course, the three

(06:57):
different groups, the two main groups though on the ice today.
Yesterday it was Group A on the ice first, Group
B second.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Today they flipped that around.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Group B will be on the ice first, they're starting
to trickle on the ice now. Group A will be
on the ice second up in Penticton. The big takeaway
for me, Rick was Thatcher Demco yesterday absolutely so. It
was the first time we had heard from Demco since
signing his contract extension. He met with the media after
the on ice activity. I believe he was actually the

(07:27):
first regular on the ice in that first session. He
was out there early, and we showed the clip yesterday
of him on the ice along with Tolapilo and Medvedev
as well. We have some clips though from Thatcher after practice.
The first one I wanted to get into here is
something that a lot of the players talked about yesterday.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
They don't want to talk a ton about last year,
like a lot of it is this new energy in
the room, this breath of fresh air in the room.
We obviously know what happened last year. All of that,
and also I really believe that Adam Foot is leaning
on the core group of Besser, Demco, Peterson as the
new leadership group of this team. Think are the pillars

(08:10):
of this team. I think you gotta put Garland in
the I think so, yeah, yeah, I heard maybe a
slight step down, but he's in that. You're definitely right.
I heard Garland this week. I heard that he wants
to take a more leadership role, especially after the contract extension,
and the Canucks have not had a christannab type leader.
You're right. You know who took the kids out for
dinner or whatever. Yeah, when when Peterson and Besser and

(08:32):
Hughes were all just entering the league, it was Chris
tanneb who took them aside and showed him how to
be a good proll on and off the ice. They
haven't had that time. I hear that Garner Garland wants
to be that type of leader, So that's good when
you hear stuff like that.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
Yeah, and of course he signed an extension over the
summer as well. Let's get to clip one here, Derek.
This is Thatcher Demko yesterday again kind of laying out
the energy and the vibe right now with this team
heading into well, starting day two of training camp today.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
I mean last year, obviously we had some adversity as
a team, and then you know, I didn't really feel
like I helped out too much. So I feel like
I am a guy that can be a leader on
this team, not just through my play, but a little
bit more involved in the room. So I'm excited to
kind of step up in those facets and I think
there's just a fresh breath of air in the room

(09:21):
this year. Obviously we weren't really you know, set up
to succeed with some of the things that were going
on last year. And I think it's a testament to
the belief in our group, having you know, myself and
Brock and Gary all all commit to the group, and
you know, I think that that everyone in there, you know,
believes that we can can get back to the team

(09:42):
that we were two years ago.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
That's second part, Rick, is something you've been hammering on
a lot because I think a lot of people talk
about the doom and gloom around the Vancouver.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Can yet last year, well yeah, k exactly, chaos and
a soap opera. They kind of have that this year.
But the thing that Denco mentioned there, the fact that
that went down and out of that, yeah, Garland, Garland
and Demco are the big ones because let's be honest,
they circled back at the last second with Besser.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
He wasn't on their bingo card, but they made it work.
But Demco and Garland specifically because their car tracks weren't up.
But they went to their agents and they wanted to
come back despite everything that it was going on here.
Two American born players, Yeah, told their agents, we want
to go back to Vancouver and they were looking at
UFA status. Players work hard all their lives.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
To become a UFA's because their club controlled. After being
drafted for you know, seven eight years. For these guys
to say to their agents, no, we're not going to
hit the market, we want to go back to Vancouver,
that's pretty telling, yep, tell and mentioning that they weren't
set up to succeed. I think things, to be honest,
I think we might have learned about the dysfunction going
on with that team later than the.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
Dysfunction was happy. I think it was almost off the rip.
It was a problem last year in that locker room.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
There's other things that Thatcher Demko talked about. First of all,
we've heard this a lot.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
Adam Foot's been talking about the conversations he had with
Demco in the offseason. Very early on Depco Patterson Hughes,
et cetera. This clip here, clip too.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
He talks about Adam foot and what he's expecting, but
also again those conversations that happened early on between the
head coach, the new head coach, and that leadership group.

Speaker 5 (11:20):
Yeah, I mean, I think every guy is different, right,
so every guy is going to have their approach, have
their strategy. I think Footy has done a great job
of kind of incorporating the group throughout the summer. You know,
I think in the past with different guys, it's and
I think it probably is league wide in most cases,
but you don't really hear much from the team the
early months and then you know, maybe a month before

(11:42):
camp you start having meetings or phone calls or what
have you. So Footy kind of got in our ear
right away and was involved in some of our you know,
not necessarily our training things, but different ways that we
could kind of cultivate a better leadership group. And yeah,
I think that's one of the things that he's really
good at, is just his relationships with the guys and
writing that line of you know, being our boss, but

(12:04):
also being able to kind of be approachable with us.
And yeah, he was very involved with it right away,
and I think the guys have first wanted to.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
That I'd be curious to know if if that was
a regret from Rick talktt, if maybe you know, the
room wasn't set up, or maybe it couldn't have been
because of what was going on with Millar and Pederson,
that may that maybe he had to step in more
than the players should have maybe handled there. There were
no issues a year before, that is true, when they
had over one hundred, they had one hundred and nine points,
went to a round two against happened to no issues

(12:32):
that year. Yep. It was this past season that was
a disaster. And for whatever reasons. There's a million reasons.
But I'm impressed with Adam Foot so far, with what
he's done, you know, getting to the leadership group in
the summer and talking about accountability and all that. Everything. Look, Ryan,
everyone is zero, zero is zero in first place. Today.
Everything you can talk is positive. Today. The bullets start

(12:55):
flying on regular season opener and then we judge them
from there. But right now I think they've done all
the right things and said all the right things.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
One other thing we didn't get to with Demco clipwise. Oh,
he talked about yesterday his disappointment with the four Nations.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
He was very he was. He very much said that
if things didn't happen the way they did, he would
have been on that team for sure. And then he
shed light on I think it was Jeff Patterson that
asked him about is a goal to be part of
the US Olympic team, and you have some insight on that, Rick,
So that your Demko said yesterday he's going to make
that US Olympic team, the one he was left off

(13:34):
the summer camp. He said, if I play the way
I can, I'll make that American Olympic team. I went
to my USA contact and I said, Hey, this is
what Dempko said, and my USA contact replied, that's the
attitude we hope he takes. Now, the Americans have seven
goaltenders on a list. He didn't make the camp, but
he's on the long list. They are going to watch

(13:56):
that your Dempko, any guy that didn't go to the
US camp in the Canadian camp as well. If they
will come out guns of blazon, they're gonna make that
US Olympic team. And that applies to thatcher Dempko. Two.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
If he starts out hot, he's going to make the team. Well,
and let's be honest, Rick, So the three goalies for
the US at the Four Nations where Hellibuck, Ottinger, and Swayman.

Speaker 1 (14:18):
Well there was one more of the guy in Seattle,
but they took four. Yeah, right, but the three prominent ones,
the prominent ones. I didn't see like whoa, because it
was all hyped going into the tournament, how amazing the
goaltending was. I didn't see like Connor Hellibuck being like,
oh my goodness, yeah, he's a surefire. He's gonna lead
them to the to the gold medal at the Olympics

(14:39):
coming up, Like, I think there is room for Demco
to Bailey's get on the team. Who knows who starts.
I think that's good. I think the US probably look still,
they might not know. I think they might have a favorite.
But I think there's things that are going to have
to be decided early on in the season. Here. I
could see Demko playing his way onto this and the
fire that he has, sorry rake, the fire he has,
and having that as a goal that's gonna benefit the
Canucks early on too. He knows he's got that cherry

(15:02):
that he wants to get after the Americans are gonna
be watching dem goo okay and you know last year
they were hoping he could play and get to the
Four Nations. He just didn't get enough games in. Yeah,
exactine to take him to the four Nations. He'll be fine. Yeah, yeah,
absolutely more.

Speaker 4 (15:15):
As the show goes on, Filipedo chatted with Ian McIntyre
about the season.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
Add Adam Foot was glowing about Elias.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
Petterson EP forty after day one a training camp, so
we'll get into that as well. Of course, we got
a big two hours ahead be got is it just
me coming up in the next hour? Reminder six oh
four two hundred ninety four ninety four is where you
can text email the team at Zechmedia dots.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
Yeah, I want to get the sin because it's a sponsor. Yes.
Bezont Mortars is added Teddy Blueger. Okay, Teddy Blueger to
the lineup with O'Connor and Lacara Mackie. So Dakota Joshua
got traded. Yeah, so no more Basson but Bassont this
week added Teddy Blueger. Teddy Blueger. So what did he
pick up? Like a Lamborghini? He's like, I don't know

(15:58):
the car?

Speaker 6 (15:59):
Let go?

Speaker 1 (15:59):
Do you think I bring down the car? What he got?
I'm telling you Teddy Blueger is a part of Bysant
Mortars our good pals and Teddy Blueger is in the
final year of his deal. Okay, so maybe the Pissant
curse will live on. We'll have to wait and see
on that again. As mentioned, Yes, Persrenson, white Caps head coach,
coming up at eleven. But up next your BFF, one

(16:20):
of your favorites. W's BBF, BFF, best friend forever, your
best friend? My best friend's up north. It's not Thomas Drance.
I thought it was.

Speaker 7 (16:29):
No.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
He lives in Grand Perile, Alberta. Well there you go.
Not Thomas Drats. I'll tell you that much right now.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
Trance is in Penticton, of course for the athletic We
will talk to him next. But what he saw on
day one, what he's looking to see in day two
of Canucks training camp happening happening in Penticton. Thanks for

That's where we find Thomas Drants from the athletic in
sports Net six fifty Thomas, how.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
Are you, sir? Oh? Did he just log out of
the zoom? He locked out? Or and he was ready?
Nina cut him off.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
No, he left right, So this is two weeks in
a row, like like, you know, we're trying to run
a smooth operation here without Donnie. You know, Nina's there,
I'm here, and two weeks in a row. We've had
issues with Thomas and he looked like he was ready to.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
Go, and then we had issues beforehand. Yesterday, these guy's
going up to Pentakedicton is causing problems. It's just trans
is back, Thomas, take two. Let's see. Ah, there it
is where it is? Yeah, we're all good, right, yeah?

Speaker 8 (18:58):
Yeah good? Yeah, well great, Penticton's lovely. It's like twenty
seven degrees out every.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
Day, Sonny.

Speaker 8 (19:04):
A delightful way to end the summer and sort of
get into the rhythms of hockey season. Canucks training camp
has obviously been interesting already and we're just one day
in and it's great to be with you guys.

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Today training camp day to just getting underway. But from
training camp day one, Thomas, who is your standout player?

Speaker 1 (19:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (19:26):
So I know everyone wants to hear about the star guys,
but here's the truth. You know, the star players don't
have as much at stake as the guys fighting for
jobs at the fringes of an NHL roster.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
That's just how it is.

Speaker 8 (19:39):
And as you know from watching February games against Nashville
over the course of you know, all of our hockey
fan lives, effort goes a long way in this sport,
right that you can't compete with a team that's out
working you or a player that's out working you. So
you know, star players obviously stand out because they can
do incredibly special things here and there. But for the

(20:00):
most part, you know, the standouts yesterday are guys like
Linus Carlson, whose speed looks improved, who looks like he
spent some real time working on that core, Max Sassin,
who's bringing a level of of sort of grit and
battle to some of his one on one drills that yeah,
he probably needs to show, especially if he's going to
play center. And I thought it was interesting that the
Canucks started him there in terms of their initial sort

(20:23):
of group B lineup on Thursday. And then you know,
you've got guys like Po Joseph. Like you want to
know who this year's DG is Training Camp All Star,
it's Po Joseph. Po Joseph looks incredible out there, and
that's again to be expected.

Speaker 1 (20:39):
That guy's got a lot.

Speaker 8 (20:40):
At stake in terms of showing well to a new
organization over the course of this weekend in Penticton.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
And oh this guy, I tell you, boy, oh boy,
yesterday forehand, it's just unbelievable. What is going on with
these I am I am knowing where technology is today,
knowing where technology is today. We we've got guys from Sweden,

(21:07):
remember the Karen Maki's coach. We interviewed him a couple
of years ago in Sweden. Where is he back back again? Thomas?

Speaker 8 (21:15):
Yeah, I don't think it's my internet. My internet seems fine.
It's just the zoom seems to click out very suddenly. Anyway,
we'll figure it out and we'll make do. If I
lose you again, I'll call back, Okay, all right, but
but yeah, so yeah, No, it's those guys that are
standing out. I'd add one note that might be exciting
the Canucks fans, and that's you know, at the end
of sort of the Group B session yesterday they're doing

(21:37):
some one on one and two on two down low
battle drills and Philip heedl was eating checkers lunch, I
mean scoring absolute highlight reel goals backhand while protecting the puck.
That just beat Ty Young top corner. Another double wrap
around where he circled the net and had the goalie
beat and had his checker beat, but then circled the
net again for good measure. Kind of did like a

(21:59):
double Wendel Clark. It had me laughing. It was the
sort of rep that had me legitimately lapping in the
stands it was so thick. So he's shown well among
sort of the higher stature guys in the early going.

Speaker 4 (22:11):
One name you didn't mention there. You might have when
you were gone, But Harmon Dowe was all over this yesterday.
Brandon Coots Thomas, what did he show you in day
one of training camp.

Speaker 8 (22:22):
Well, his skating is, you know, potentially special. I mean
there's going to be some work to be done there
as he matures right, It's not unusual for an eighteen
year old player to add a step between nineteen and twenty,
but he's already an NHL caliber skater. With the potential
to be like special fast plus plus skater as he
adds sort of you know, core strength and muscle onto

(22:45):
his frame. He's a special mover out there. And then
you know in some of those rush drills, that shot
plays and it looks absolutely sick. So yeah, I mean,
there were obviously some size limitations in some of the
down low battle drills. The Lander muscled him off the
pocket at one point, which you know, you you'd hope
to see, I think if you're a Canucks fan. In

(23:06):
other situations, he fared pretty well along the wall in
the battle with Rock Besser.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
That's no meaning. Oh Jesus guy, Oh my goodness. So
it's okay, he's having a little technical Issu's a competic
Then he'll come back. No, no, no, no, no, no, we're
not gonna try it again, do it. No, No, I
never got to ask a question. No, you're gonna ask
a question. But here's what we're gonna do.

Speaker 4 (23:28):
We're gonna take a quick break because we're up against
the time wise anyway, we're gonna take a quick break.

Speaker 1 (23:31):
Right now. I'm gonna get him on the phone. Okay,
we'll give him a call and then we'll finish up beautiful.
You're not going to see him anymore. Unfortunately, you're gonna
have to wait till next Friday to see Thomas again.
But we're gonna give Thomas a call in the break
and on the other side more Thomas will also set
up our waddling dog pole question as well. This is
Donnie and Dolly, the team on.

Speaker 6 (24:34):
A reminder again, all of our guests today brought to
you by the Arnold Palmer designed Whistler Golf Club. We
now reconvene with Thomas Drants, this time on the phone.

Speaker 8 (24:45):
Thomas, we have you, Yes, I believe so I hear
you anyway, Yep, hopefully this conversation won't be interrupted.

Speaker 1 (24:52):
All right, Thomas, let me get into question before we
cut you off for good. The two guys that I
want to let me keeping my eye on at this
camp Lacara Mackien Wilander. You know, if the Canucks are
fifteen twenty games into the regular season and that second line,
you know, center spot's not working and they got to
make a big trade, you know, these two guys possibly

(25:15):
could be on their way out. Uh, how have they
been in the cap so far? In your eyes?

Speaker 3 (25:21):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (25:21):
I mean Lacara, Mackie and Lander are both getting plumb opportunities,
right Vorlander skating alongside Derek Forbert in contrast, for example,
to Victor Mancini skating with a gentleman named Nisov and
and of course Elias Petterson skating with Parker Alcos, a
player who's likely going back to the WHL for his

(25:42):
overage season. So you know, obviously that's that can be
seen as a vote of confidence, but it can also
be seen as the organization, you know, deciding that in
his first professional training camp, they wanted to give him some,
you know, credible NHL level insulation, whereas maybe Peterson and Mancini,
two guys who played a little more pro hockey, can

(26:02):
sort of carry their own pair in a training camp environment.
You know, neither made a huge impression on me on
day one. To be totally honest with you, Lakaramaki had
a short summer which was challenging. I didn't see like
the sort of exponential growth in the power of his stride,

(26:23):
for example, that I do think he's going to need
to make in time. But getting a shot with Beatle
and pain, you know, certainly opens the door for him.
I still think he's a player that the Canucks are
willing and expecting to be a little bit more patient with.
He's definitely going to be in the mix for one
of those middle six jobs, but I don't know that
he's the front runner in so far as maybe the

(26:46):
way he's lined up in line rushes might suggest. So
we'll sort of see how that one goes. As for Valander,
you know, looked pretty good in the two on two
and one on one battle drills. But you know, having
seen him play a lot both at BU and down
in Seattle at the Prospects Tournament, I really think preseason
in the scrimmage tomorrow on Saturday at the South Goganagan

(27:08):
Event Center will be more instructive. You know, we know
he's fast, we know he's strong, we know he can
win races to pucks and break up cycle possessions. So
the battle drills down low are like tailor made for him.
It's sort of the team game, feeling pressure, handling the
pot that I think are going to be his that
are going to determine his fate in terms of whether

(27:29):
or not he's nhlready off the hop or whether he
might need some more seasoning to open this year.

Speaker 1 (27:35):
Another prospect that is very important in my eyes is
that to Ratu because he's got to he's got to
steal one of the center spots, because he's not gonna
have a better opportunity than right now to steal a
center spot. Can he do it? Thomas?

Speaker 2 (27:51):
I think so.

Speaker 8 (27:52):
I mean, I think he's got the inside track as
training camp opens. He took such major strides as a
skater year over year last summer, but he had a
short summer that was even shorter because he ended the
year injured and spent at least some of his summer,
you know, in recovery mode. And I do think that's shown. Like,
I don't think he's made the same step, the same

(28:14):
exponential improvement as a skater as he did last summer,
and of course not I mean short summer, and he
went into it injured. Right, It's a different beast Entirely,
it wasn't reasonable to expect him to continue to ascend
as a mover. I don't think in the wake of
this offseason. Look, I still like his game. I think
the Canucks are very comfortable with his game. You know,

(28:36):
the this coaching staff in sort of figuring through or
working through priorities this summer, watched a lot of tape
from last year, the end of last season and Ratu's development,
his play in that last twenty games or so of
the season, I think made this organization comfortable with the
idea that they could hold the fort with their current center.

(28:56):
So I still think the opportunity looms for Ratu. But
you know, just given sort of the nature of his
offseason and some of what he dealt with throughout it,
not to mention the fact that it was truncated by
the Calder Cup playoffs and remaining with Abasford and rehabbing throughout.
You know, I'm not surprised that he hasn't necessarily come
into camp and looks faster than he did last season.

(29:18):
And you know, he's a player for whom his feet
will be his faith, right if he can move fast enough.
He's got everything else the intelligence beside the skill level
of face off winning to be a top nine center
in this league. But that requires the feat to play,
and he doesn't have to be a plus skater, but
he has to be passable to make it work. I

(29:39):
think he will be. I think he is, But you know,
it's not like he's taken a huge step in that area,
at least based on what I saw of his skating
mechanics and rush burls and such. On day one of
the next training camp.

Speaker 4 (29:53):
One final one, Thomas quickly if you can one minute
or so, we played some clips with thatcher Demko. In
the first segment, I think he said yesterday he hadn't
really talked at him foot yet about deployment this year
with him and Kevin Lakeman. How do you see the
net being split for the Canucks this year?

Speaker 8 (30:08):
Yeah, I mean I think pretty aggressively. The team is
very focused on how condensed the schedule is going to
be with the Olympics, you know, I think fifty fifty
is sort of the target organizationally for Thatcher Demco with
Lankan and it sort of like thirty two. But obviously
those are the best laid plans, right, I mean, we're
used to seeing goalie injuries wrap those plans in a hurry.

(30:30):
That's how this works. Obviously, losing streaks and performance will
dictate from as well. It's going to take some discipline.
We've seen it year after year where the Canucks really
need to win or they get into a stretch where
they need to get hot, and what happens, coaches start
to ride that you Demco. We've seen it year after year,
coach after coach. So whatever the club plans to do right,

(30:51):
there's a difference between executing that plan and having it
at the moment. But fifty to thirty two is what
the organization is thinking based on what I'm hearing behind
the scenes.

Speaker 1 (31:00):
Thomas, we had you on Zoom, we had you on
the phone.

Speaker 4 (31:04):
You're multifaceted and we appreciate you joining us as usual
on a Friday morning.

Speaker 1 (31:09):
Thanks Thomas, Yeah, my pleasure.

Speaker 8 (31:11):
It's the Drants Interview two ways.

Speaker 1 (31:13):
Yeah yeah, thanks Thomas. Having good weekend. Thomas Trance from
the Athletic A Sports at six fifty. We talked about
BFF before Thomas, Ye, Maddie d and Sydney in the
Baside Ocean Front Resort.

Speaker 4 (31:25):
Inbox, b BBF, not BFF. BBF stands for best Bald Friend.
Maybe you could say that about Thomas, the best Bald Friend. Yeah,
ko Jack, Yes, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
Somebody called him Fester. Mister Clean when I when I
see that, when I no, I because I use mister
Clean products. The magic eraser is a fantastic prod. Mister Clean,
the cleaning, Yes, magic Eraser. When I see the ball guy,
I think of drants. Well there you go. Uh. Time
to set up our our poll question for the first time.

(31:58):
It's the Wadling Dog poll question.

Speaker 4 (32:00):
Our friend Brandon and everyone with the Wadling Dog A
reminder experience one of Victoria's iconic destinations, sleep, sip and
stock up all in one legendary spot comes sit and
stay at the dog today.

Speaker 1 (32:13):
All right, Nina got her up the wattling dog pole question.
What should the Canucks top line start the season? B
They'll look at this. This is perfect, fifty to fifty
down the middle, Besser, Petterson and Kine or Besser, Peterson
and DeBusk. You can't beat this. This is fifty one
so far sent and fifty percent down the middle. Yep.

(32:37):
You can't ask for a better pole question. It's making
people think, and I mean for me, it was Kane.
I really thought I thought about this in the summer
as well, that Caine and Peterson should be together. Look
at the centerman. The Cane played within Edmonton for four years,
star studded. The reason the owners keep going back to

(32:58):
the Cup finals is they are loaded up the middle
of the ice. And look at Caine. He's a big
guy who needs a centerman to feed him the puck.
And I don't know if Hetl's that guy. And right
now he's with Hetel and the Karamakie. But I wanted
Caine with Peterson. We'll see how it goes. It's only
day two of training camp, but they're gonna stay together.

(33:19):
Kine with Heatel and the Karamaki today, Donnie or sorry Ryan,
and but for me, it's Kane with Petterson. Invest I
did like yesterday Jake debrask talked about, you know, having
because they did that trio Beser E P forty and
DeBras did play together a little bit last season, and

(33:41):
so he said that yesterday, you know, they kind of
felt like they were going to pick up on that
a little bit. I mean, I'm with you Rick now again.

Speaker 4 (33:49):
I know we're reading into lines out of training camp
and maybe that's an awful thing to do. Like Cain
and Heatel just does not seem to drive to me,
that doesn't really fit together to E. E. P. Forty
and Kine is the better fit. And Patterson needs hard skill. Yeah,
he needs a power forward on his line to go
get the poxs, go do some of the gritty stuff
as well.

Speaker 1 (34:09):
There's no hard skill on that line. Yeah, sorry, but
Kane brings that. Caine brings you what JT. Miller brought
you in the top six hard skill.

Speaker 4 (34:16):
Yep, no, absolutely, Uh. The Canuck players are on the ice.
We have a video courtesy of our good pal, Nina's
best friend. We talk about best friends. Yes, he's on
Nina's list. David Quadrelli. He put around this video first
full day of Group B action. This courtesy Canuck's Army
and David Cordrelli. So the players are on the.

Speaker 1 (34:36):
Ice again, a bit of a change today, Group be
out first instead of Group Bay get the better exactly,
they get the better ice exactly exactly set the better ice,
which is important for these guys too. There was a
lot of talk yesterday.

Speaker 4 (34:50):
Well, first of all, I should mention Philip Hetle did
do an interview with Ian McIntyre. Ian posted yesterday and
one of the things Hetle said he folks used on
with his team over the summer was maybe playing a
bit differently, like like yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:07):
Sorry, doesn't get more concussion, right, that's the big thing.

Speaker 4 (35:09):
Obviously, his health is a big thing when we talk
about Philip Heedel, and he talked a lot about maybe
maybe instead of He watched a lot of game film
over the summer and he said he noticed himself maybe
turning the wrong way.

Speaker 1 (35:22):
Well, Dickinson exaccussion a long exactly, it was a bit
of a cheap shot. I never got suspended. That was
don't put yourself in a position to get a cheap
shot like that. Front behind Dickinson and that's how he
got his last concussion.

Speaker 4 (35:35):
Right now, and we'll see, you know, I think we
will see how this experiment goes with Philipidos the second
line center. I'm not overly convinced that that's gonna work out. Okay,
I think they're going to be first forced to make
a trade at some point.

Speaker 1 (35:48):
But we gotta wait ten to fifteen Gay, Yeah, I
think before you give up on HEATL, you gotta wait
ten to fifteen to twenty game mark and see where
he is. And well, also at that point you might
also have see prices come down slightly because maybe there's
another team that doesn't have something working out that they
thought was going to and they're looking at problem. Tryan.
Prices for second line center are never going to go down. Yeah,

(36:10):
you probably don't grow on trees. Every team that got
ones covets them. They don't want to give them away,
and if they do, it's gonna cost you an arm
in a leg. A lot of talk yesterday about about
Adam Foot being a teacher in day one seemed like
a lot of teaching happening on day one. Talking did
the same. Yeah, yeah, both early on they both did
the same. Yeah they both did. There both teachers. You
got to teach these guys. Just because they reach the

(36:32):
NHL doesn't mean they can't be taught. I got a
couple of updates. And first of all, the Caducks told
us Jet, who had surgery in August, yep out month
to month. They didn't tell us the surgery was on
his wrist in Winnipeg with the top hand guy. Uh
a top hand guy, hand guy, the hand specialist, handspan Ryan.
He had surgery on his wrist in Winnipeg with the

(36:53):
top hand guy. That's the way, like a top specialist.
Okay for the hand well, I when I hear top
hand guy taking like the top hand No, top hand
guy like he works on hands. He's a hand special
wo heard his wrist in the playoffs last year. Over
time it got worse. They had no choice. I'm hearing
the hearing the healing is going well. Uh not my hearing,

(37:18):
I got awful. Yeah that is for should be back
in late October. Jet wou okay and one more little tidbit, uh.
Canucks got a lot of calls from agents about PTOs
in the summer. Most agents were told by the Canucks
they are full for training camp. When your team wins
the Calder Cup at the American Hockey League level, give
those kids a strong chance to make the club out

(37:40):
of training camp. Reward them. That's what the Canucks did.
A young kid in Absford doesn't need to come to
camp to see her two three PTOs player tryout guys.
And so anyways, it's really good that the Canucks had
no PTOs and they said, we got a bunch of
good kids in Absford. We're gonna give him a really
good shot to make the club.

Speaker 4 (37:59):
Yeah, I agree, Rick, we don't need to see some
guy that could potentially scoop up a spot because.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
He has a hot preseason or something like that. And
here's the PTO problem too, Canucks only have three point
two million in cap space. If the guy makes it,
you're digging into your cap space as opposed to using
that money for a centerman down the road. Yeah, there
wasn't many PTOs handed out across the league. I mean
I think I might have signed seen five. Maybe there

(38:25):
was some. But they give your kids a chance, you know,
send the right message. Your team in Abmosford won, they
called the cup. Reward them well.

Speaker 4 (38:34):
And and again I think you're seeing Adam Foot in
the staff. They're putting these guys in a position like
the I mean Jonathan Karamaki top again.

Speaker 1 (38:43):
How much is top line? Last year? He started on
Peterson's line for sure, but started on Peterson's line and
then on day two or three they're on line. Yeah. Yeah,
it just don't read too much. You know who's online one? Okay,
what about Tom Lander? But Derek Forbard you read but
he's a first round pick. That's my design. They want

(39:03):
to see Wellander in the opening night roster. But so
you'd read more into that one. I take the Lander's
a guy eleventh overall. Yeah, he if he becomes a
top four guy on the right side, they're set for years.
So he's very important at the organization.

Speaker 4 (39:19):
H Before we had to break for big rather Twitter
guy more of me. Uh, we need to talk about
able Auctions. Our good pass Jeremy and Able Auctions Wednesday.
That's next Wednesday. Able Auctions will sell the contents of
a closed metal fabrication shop, hundreds of pieces of equipment,
including six forkliffs, milling machines, lathes, welders, large steel work,

(39:42):
layout tables.

Speaker 1 (39:43):
Stock metal work in high school see we didn't have
metal work. We only had woodwork. Oh. We had a
great metal work teacher, mister Kerr at NWSS in the eighties.
All the end up guys, did you pass? I think
she minus. I begged him to give me a sea
and get get get. I sat up, probably us I'll
never come back. And so that's a good bargeting chip. Metalwork, Yes,

(40:05):
big at NWSS in the eighties, Yeah, I did, wouldwork.
I built a coffee table. Everyone had to build a
coffee table and wouldn't spoon. I don't know if to
do it now, but in the eighties yeah, I think
so we all had to build and wouldwork a coffee table.

Speaker 4 (40:19):
But I think Donnie's brought this up before, Like whose
idea was it to put children in front of these big.

Speaker 1 (40:24):
Large You got to wear the ship yeah, the face shield,
you got blades and stuff. You're putting hands, like what
are we thinking?

Speaker 4 (40:33):
Anyway, Everything from the forklifts to a turret punch to
a large Finn press machine all sold to the highest
bidder next Wednesday, this coming Wednesday. For information on this
massive metal fabrication shop auction, go to able auctions dot
Ca to get your fab shop sold at Able Auctions
Email sales at a bail Auctions dot CA, a b

(40:54):
l e Auctions dot CA. Big Rather Twitter guy up next.
This is Donnie and Dolly the team on check.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
Time. Now for Big Rid the Twitter guy before we
get to Big Rye.

Speaker 4 (41:08):
Officially a couple of things in the Bayside ocean Front
Resort in box. First of all, Justin and each fan
are good pal. He he comes up with the most
creative stuff going. He's also on broff and rough as
you like to call him as well. He's a big
brouff and rough guy. But he provided this photoshop.

Speaker 1 (41:26):
Is it just me? Early? Is it just me? But
I agree with Rick Thomas Drantz reminds me of mister
Clean and then he sent that photoshop. Oh but seriously,
when I go shopping at at save on all the time, Yeah,
this is when I see the mister Clean, I think
a Drant's right away. Well the good part here too, Justin.

Speaker 4 (41:47):
He also kept making sure to keep the earring Drant's
ear as well, right right now, that's.

Speaker 1 (41:55):
Quite the look there, That's quite the You should call
him Kojak because you know who loves your baby? Yeah, lollipop, Yeah, Jack,
What a great show. What a great show before my time?
O Jack was it was so good before my time?
Telly Savalis, Yeah, before my time. And Brenner he looks
like Vin Diesel. Yeah. Anyway, there's a Justinese fam with

(42:15):
a an early Is it just me? I also want
to mention this downtown stew in the baside ocean front
resort inbox was that Rogers last night for the Jonas
brothers and can confirm the new seats are a plus.
Underrated feature is the new leather plastic material which should
keep spills and other human grossness out of them. That

(42:38):
is a good point.

Speaker 4 (42:40):
Whoever thought of like cloth seating for a venue seat
was not.

Speaker 1 (42:46):
Over there thinking. So you can't bitch about the seats anymore.
I'm not going to. Okay, but you I've sat in them.
You you've been whining for years and they rectified it. Yes,
now you're on ripping them for the practice facility or
practice facility and we'll get one eventually. I mean, they
obviously clearly know it's a big time problem in the
community that when Calgary gets their new practice facility, the

(43:08):
Caducks are gonna be the only team out of thirty
two in the National Hockey League. That's embarrassing. Yeah, so
that's embarrassing. So thank you for that, Downtown Stew. I'm
glad you enjoyed the seats, and I hope you enjoyed
the Jonas brothers as well. Nina was disappointed she didn't
go to that concert. She was telling us in the break.

Speaker 4 (43:24):
A tweet here this is from our good pal Vince Marcogliano. Oh,
he's now working for the Athletic covering the New York Rangers. Yesterday,
JT Miller, talking to the media for the first time
as Rangers captain.

Speaker 1 (43:36):
The Rangers also debuted these T shirts you're gonna see here,
no bss T shirts.

Speaker 4 (43:43):
That's what's on the back of that T shirt there.
It says no BS, and JT was asked to explain
the slogan. It's quite literal.

Speaker 1 (43:51):
Honestly, we have gotten we haven't gotten a whole lot
into it, the team stuff yet. We're just kind of
got here. But it literally means the stick to the
team game. I want to be fat in your face,
an FU type team, you know. And so there you go.
He's this is the team Montre so far this year.
No b but when you build slogans like this in surets,
you better back it. Brack it up, yep, you better

(44:12):
brack it up. Because if you start in your first
fifteen segment fifteen game segment and you're not doing that, yep,
and you're not playing like that, then you're gonna have
to get rid of the shirt. You know what. And
there's a lot of people that have brought this up.
There was surprising similarities between the Rangers and the Canucks
last year. Oh there were both disasters. Yeah, they were
both ysfunction. You know, you saw a big trade in

(44:34):
the offseason. They fired, well, they finally got they moved
on from Jacob Truba, which was rumored forever. But then
Chris Crider as well. Remember there was that letter wreck
that got leaked about Chris Drewy looking to move on
to Yeah, they were franchises on the ice and off
the ice last year. Very similar.

Speaker 4 (44:51):
So and we'll see now with Miller's captain, we'll see
we talked a lot about that this week. We'll see
how that goes uh with the Rangers. Okay, next tweet here,
Oh crow, First of all, if you have do you
have the crow? Do you have the crow? Handy, Mark Crawford,
No the Crow the satelefit another tweet here. You'll love
this rick because it was announced efficiently. Season two of
Face Off Inside the NHL, the Amazon Prime Special, is

(45:14):
going to be released on October the third. This, of course,
the season number two of this back behind the scenes
documentary featuring NHL players. Of course, last year, Quinn Hughes
was involved in it. You can see the heavy hitters
involved in it this year, including Sidney Crosby with Willie
Kneelander and Matthew Kachuck. I think both yeah, both Ka
Chuck brothers are involved in it this year, so that'll

(45:37):
be interesting. I will say, you know, usually I'm not
a huge fan of these I think they get sanitized
a lot of the time. I did enjoy the behind
the scenes look on Prime last year that they did.

Speaker 1 (45:48):
It gives you insight. It gives you insight never never
seen before audio and video.

Speaker 4 (45:54):
Yeah, yeah, definitely, And of course having Crosby involved, that'll
be interesting. Brendan Shanahan evolved this time around as well,
so it'll be it'll be an interesting watch.

Speaker 1 (46:05):
Again if you're a fan of sports Today Twitter, you know,
and then these guys do. Oh yeah, the Canucks and
the lines and the white Caps Twitter accounts are so
great yea. And Lions do a great job. The Canucks
do a great job, the white Caps do, Vancouver Giants
BC Hockey League. It's you get more. I'm going back
to the seventies. In the eighties, we had to open

(46:28):
up the Vancouver Province and the Sun and look at
the sport, the sports, the stats. That's all we had.
You know, we had BC TV, we had mckeechee, Pascal
Hula Han and and but this is insight that never
we would have had back of the seventies. It's almost
over overkilled, like it's almost.

Speaker 4 (46:47):
Took no butter, only because there's so much now to consume.

Speaker 1 (46:52):
Right, the NFL has a stocky series half one. We've
talked about full swing, like every league at this point
now has it. And that's just the leagues. And then Rick,
you talk about the content themselves, like the Lions, in
my opinion, to do the best of any team in
the market in terms of their behind the scenes content fans.
Fans can't complain. Yeah, no, it's true. It's Scott everything

(47:12):
in your cell phone, yeah, you know, sadly that's what
new life is all about. Everything's in your cell phone? Yep,
no question, no question, Uh okay, first hour in the books.

Speaker 4 (47:20):
We're onto the second hour of the program we have
is it just me as mentioned dtmz. And up next
head coach of the Vancouver white Caps. Yes, Prisrenson, he's
on the program. We'll talk about the Caps. We'll look
back on that big seven nil victory over Philadelphia and
to head to their game again can again kent against
Kansas City tomorrow in Kansas. It's Donny know the team

(47:43):
on check.

Speaker 3 (47:45):
Hey everyone, it's Donnie and Dolly and we're looking to
partner with your company.

Speaker 1 (47:49):
We have several packages and price points to fit your
budget and spread the word about your company on the show,
in our podcast and on social media.

Speaker 3 (47:58):
We'd love to get involved with your company. Called two
five oh eight eight oh twenty two eighty two or
email advertise at checkmedia dot ca.

Speaker 4 (48:13):
Friday and all the guests today are brought to you
by our DTMZ sponsor.

Speaker 1 (48:18):
That's the Whistle Golf Club. A reminder they're.

Speaker 4 (48:20):
Looking forward to welcoming guests back in twenty twenty seven
after their extensive golf course renovation.

Speaker 1 (48:27):
Oh I love that. Are you excited about that Rento happening? Absolutely?
Why not.

Speaker 4 (48:34):
I'll tell you one thing that needs no renovation at all.
It's perfect just the way it is. That's the bank
of a white Caps Awesome. They're sizzling hot at the moment.
And we're joined now by head coach of the white Caps.
Yes ber sort say yes, birth thanks for doing this today.
How are you, sir?

Speaker 1 (48:47):
Some good?

Speaker 9 (48:48):
Thanks you guys?

Speaker 1 (48:49):
Ah good, very good, very good.

Speaker 4 (48:51):
So we'll look ahead in a second, but I want
to look back first on Saturday seven to nothing victory
over Philadelphia after having about two and a half weeks off.
I just, first of all, have you been part of
many games where your club has put up seven goals?

Speaker 1 (49:08):
And also just just the atmosphere and the vibe around
that performance by your team.

Speaker 9 (49:14):
Yeah, the first question, no, I've tried it a couple
of times, but not many made mainly in a cup
fixtures but but not in league games. Winning by seven
goals is a lot, So I think that was that
was huge, of course it was. It's it's not something

(49:36):
that happens often, so it was great and and the
team played very very well, so yeah, it was it was.
It was great, and you know, the hype around the
team is good because it means that we're performing well
and that people enjoy what they see. And you know,
I think it's great. It's We've been having a good

(49:57):
season so far, and I think the players done extremely
well and they really deserve you know that people, you know,
cheer them on and are getting excited behind them.

Speaker 4 (50:09):
So also, out of that win on Saturday, the earliest
the club has ever clinched a playoff spot. How beneficial
is that for you to have this much runway now
to close out the year knowing you have that spot
locked in. Obviously you want to finish as high as
you can, but you have a playoff spot locked in.
How beneficial is that for you?

Speaker 9 (50:28):
No, it's obviously beneficial because then you can, you know,
just a little bit, you're not under pressure for making
making risk on players and you know, maybe risking players
health and stuff. You can you can be more balanced
than your decision making. And yeah, and on the other hand,

(50:49):
we don't want to We don't want to take the
foot off the pedal yet, huh. So we would like to,
We would like to still develop our game and and
try to see if we can become even stronger for
the before the the playoffs. So I think it's it's
about finishing strong and and maybe having the opportunity to also, yeah,

(51:11):
make good decisions and not false decisions.

Speaker 1 (51:14):
Yes, Bert, we have not talked to you since the
signing of Thomas Mueller. Congrats, what a huge, massive signing.
Obviously you've known him from the past. But what has
he meant to you, your team, the city, the league, everybody.

Speaker 9 (51:28):
Yeah, No, he's been great, of course he has. He's
he's a great player who's come in and his personality
is such a great person and you know, he's open
minded and open to fans and to everybody. And he's
also brought in, you know, an extra spark to his

(51:51):
teammates and and to all of us in the organization.
I would say lifted everything with his personality and also
you know with the excitement the player like that creates
when he when he comes into a club like ours.
And I think that's that's the thing that you really
can predict, that you can get a player like that

(52:13):
and what it can do to an organization. And then
on the pitch, he is spot on. He wants to
work out for the team. He wants to put his
mark in together with his teammates. It's not about too
much Bermula winning with white Caps. It's about white Caps
winning with Thomas on the team. And it's he's all
the team guy and and you know, very competitive, and

(52:35):
it's it's just great. It raised our training sessions. It
has raised, you know, the the intensity level when we train.
And he's he's done well in the games as well,
so it's yeah, it's been great so far.

Speaker 1 (52:49):
All coaches and all sports love scoring points and goals.
Your second in the league in goals for, but you're
number one in the league and goals against. That's a
stat that the coaches love more than the goals for.
You've done a great job of keeping the ball. Depends
on the no kidding, but just talk about keeping the
ball out of the back of your net. How impressive
is that this year?

Speaker 9 (53:11):
Yeah, it's good. It's something that we've been working hard
to to get the right balance when we attack, so
we are not vulnerable behind the ball and we we
don't attack too openly. It's it's easy just running forward,
but at one point you'll lose the ball and then
you have to you have to have the right balance,
and I think we we in most games played with

(53:33):
the right balance, and I've been happy with that. I
think that, yeah, I would I would love that. I
love when we score goals. I think that that's what
creates the biggest joy for for everybody, maybe except from
our opponents, but but I love that. But I also

(53:54):
enjoy that we that we are difficult to score against
and that teams has to do well to to put
one in the back of our net. So I think
it's it's It's also much easier to to play offensive
football if you if you're leading instead of you behind
and have to catch up all the time. So yeah,

(54:14):
it's important for us that we that we're also good defending.

Speaker 1 (54:18):
Most impressive thing about the seven goals in one game.
You did it without Ryan Gold and Brian White, two
very good players. Can you give us I know Gold
is is back training. Can you give us a little
bit of insight into the injury updates and when they
could be back.

Speaker 9 (54:35):
Yeah, Brian is the one who's back. Who will be
back the soonest I hope we have a couple of
games next week, one of them he will be ready for.
I think Ryan is now training regularly and that sort
of thing, which means that he will build him towards
the game uh game state. He hasn't been playing for

(54:59):
half a year, so that's very long time. So he
just we need to we need to train him together
with the others and together with the normal training sessions
and stuff, and he'll he'll have to feel right also
after training sessions, so we will we'll go for for
a while he away trains and then he'll be prepared
for getting back into the roster. Were also in the

(55:21):
fortunate situation we don't have to rush things, but on
the other hand, we would also like to get him
in the mix. So he's you know, it's going to
take some time, so it's important that we also get
him into the into the mix when we play the games.
But it's it's you know, it's also about finding the balance.
It's been out for a long time, and it's not

(55:42):
about if we want to rush it for a week
or not. It's about having him strown back and we
also want to make sure that he lasts when he's back.

Speaker 1 (55:50):
Yes, for Tuesday night, your club punched their ticket to
the Canadian Championship Final. Last night we found out it's
going to be an all Vancouver finals. Vancouver FC, Punch theirs.
Talk about the pride within the organization. You're three time
defending champions, Canadian champions, that is. Talk about the pride
in the organization about being back there now for a
fourth time and potentially winning a fourth time, and the

(56:11):
excitement about going up against another Vancouver club as well.

Speaker 9 (56:15):
Yeah, it's it's a competition where you know, we'll really
first make the headlines the day we're not in the final.
I think because now we've been we've been in the
final for the last many seasons and for me it's
the first season. So I think it's it's great for
me to be in the final. I think it's it's yeah,

(56:36):
it's a good achievement. I think all competitions are difficult,
and especially in a competition like this, it's it's much
easier to to lose something than to gain something on
the way. But now we're in the final, then it's
it's great for us to be there. And I think
that the team has has done well in this competition.
The other day, I think we played a decent game

(56:58):
and you know, separate ourselves from Fords pretty pretty much
which I you know, which we should do over ninety
five minutes. So I think it was it was a
good performance overall, and I think for everybody, Canadian Championship
means a lot. And I think that it's it's great

(57:19):
that we're going up against another Vancouver team in the final.
I think the derby there maybe creating some extra attention
towards this game. And yeah, I just think that it's
it's a lot of fun that we that we play
another Vancouver team in the final.

Speaker 1 (57:33):
You're in Kansas City for a game tomorrow, yesper any
challenges to not being on the road for the first time,
I think it's the first MLS match on the road
for your club since early August. Any challenges in.

Speaker 9 (57:44):
That, It's true we should have put in Orlando, right,
but that was right, so we had to push that
one for a couple of weeks. So yeah, it's been
a while. BC Place has treated us very well, but
now we have to go to Kansas and pick up

(58:06):
because we know that we should also be able to
play well away, not just at home. So I think
it's it's gonna be great for us also having the
opportunity to show ourselves playing away from home, so I
think it's yeah, it's it's going to be a difficult game.
We know that because all away games in the MLS,
I found out, is very difficult to handle. But we'll

(58:30):
be ready.

Speaker 4 (58:30):
Well, thank you for taking the time today, yesping, good
luck tomorrow and we will talk to you soon, I'm sure.

Speaker 9 (58:37):
Thank you very much, have a great weekend.

Speaker 4 (58:39):
Thank you very much. Yes, yes, White Caps head coach.
I couldn't believe that when I looked at that last
night break. First one, it's August the eighth, the first
time that the white Caps are on the road. Since
that time, they have been at home for a while.
There's been a break in there as well. I understand that,
but lots of home cooking.

Speaker 1 (58:56):
Nothing wrong with that. But the biggest thing he said
was Ryan Gold. They got two games next week and
he says that Ryan gall will be ready for one
of them. Brian White still a little bit of ways way,
but to get Ryan Goall back, and you know that
that's going to be a major, major plus for the Caps.
At the same time, Rick, you've been going on about
this a lot. Look at how productive they've been about
seven goals the other night, and neither of them have

(59:18):
been in there. You know, it's hard to believe this
club right now is the best club in Vancouver. And
you get on the white Caps bandwagon, folks. These guys
are fun to watch. They score a ton of goals,
they keep the ball out of the net. This is
a good team. Yep.

Speaker 4 (59:32):
Absolutely, And they're busy the next little while. They are busy,
that's for sure. Uh Okay, that's that's it for yes, Ber,
we appreciate him joining the show.

Speaker 1 (59:40):
Up next, we're gonna touch on the poll question a
little bit more and continue to talk about day two
of Canucks training camp happening in penn Tickton. It's Donnie
Noi the team on check.

all in one legendary spot, Come, sit and stay at
the dogs today. Reminder are D and D merchandises there
as well? All right, the waddling dog pull question.

Speaker 1 (01:00:53):
Let's get her up? What should the Canucks top line
to start the season b Besser Peterson or Kine or
Besser Peterson and debrask Look at this again? Just a
fabulous question right down the middle of six hundred plus
votes already. I told you I'm a little disappointed. I
really wanted to see Kane, but I mean, it's day

(01:01:16):
two of camp and when the regular season starts, Ryan,
if it you know they change lines all the time. Yeah,
I mean, if you know, if it gets to the
point where Dobrascas are working, they'll put Kine there eventually. Yeah.
And if you are wondering if you or if you
didn't hear these, this is the grouping or the lines
that they have at camp through two days are best

(01:01:39):
er EP forty in debrask In the first group and
the second group had Kane Heatle and the Karamaki together.
So we'll see first preseason game.

Speaker 4 (01:01:47):
We haven't really talked about this first pre season game
Sunday in Seattle for the Vancouver Canucks, so we'll see
what kind of lineup heads to Seattle.

Speaker 1 (01:01:55):
Uh uh for for their first game.

Speaker 4 (01:01:58):
Speaking of that training camp, more visual evidence that it
is ongoing. Day two is underway courtesy Canucks Army and
our very own good pal David Quadrelli Quad's tweeting out
intensity is picking up and a little clip here of
a battle Joe going on.

Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
Right about and Ryan. It has to there's guys battling
for positions, and there's guys in Absburg with that Calder
Cup run that have put themselves in a position a
fight for a job. In Vancouver, there's a lot of
openings up available up front, not so much on defense
or goal, but there's a lot of guys that got
to show well, Ryan got to show well.

Speaker 4 (01:02:35):
You know, we've obviously spent a lot of time Rick
talking about the battles where spots might be open or
up for grabs. The one thing we have to remember,
I know he was here last year as an assistant coach.
I understand it, Adam Foot. But these guys also now
are trying to impress the new head coach. That's right, right,
there's a new head coach here. Yes, I know, Adam
Foot part of the staff. The rest of the staff

(01:02:57):
is all brand new too, so you can be on Foot.
You're try I want to impress this sol, this this
new staff. It's multi leveled, because a multi layered, because
you're the other impression you're trying to make is I
think all of these guys that were here last year
and how last year went down, I think they really
want to throw all that to the curb too and say,
look at we are a lot better. And of course
we talk a lot about EP forty being the top

(01:03:18):
of that list, but I think the entire group, you know,
look at we are a lot better than what we
put up last year, and we really want to show
that that is the case, starting with day one and
now into day two with.

Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
The prospects how much quicker are you, how much bigger
are you, how much stronger are you? Right from last year?
They want to see that improvement. The only thing that
sucks for the Atmosphurg kids is they won. They called
the cup. They didn't have a ton of time in
the offseason, right put on to wait that the Kara
MACKI needs the strength upper body that he needs. They
didn't have a tough ton of time because they had

(01:03:49):
a ten month season.

Speaker 4 (01:03:51):
I want to mention quickly we just had Yes, We'sorinson
on the show head coach boy Caps. The one injury
you got updates Rick on Ryan Gold and Brian White,
And if you missed it, Brian White closer to return
to action than Ryan Gold is. Looks like Brian White
might be able to get in to one of the
games next week for the white Caps. Gold is a
little further away. The one injury we didn't mention those

(01:04:13):
Tristan Blackman. That injury happened on Tuesday night in that
semi final game for the white Caps in the Canadian Championship.
Yesper saying to the media earlier this week, mcl sprain
and they're hopeful he'll be back before the MLS Cup
playoffs begin, which is around a month away that that's
going to kick off. So I think they avoided things

(01:04:35):
the worst case scenario, I should say, because the way
it looked when he went off. It was not And yes,
reaction initially was not great either, So it looks like
they avoided a bit of a scare sprain mcl.

Speaker 1 (01:04:46):
White Caps season has been great. It's fun to watch
and what they're doing, and without injured players, scoring seven
goals without these two guys, Are you kidding me? I
know it's very impressive, are you kid? Meet? Scoring seven
goals against not only without them, against the top team.
That's the other key. It wasn't some minno so again.

Speaker 4 (01:05:03):
White Caps in Kansas City tomorrow five thirty Tonight Lions
Stampede's Big one in Calgary, kickoff at six point thirty.

Speaker 1 (01:05:12):
You saying you have a date with your couch watch again.
Last time the lines were on the road. Yeah, they
blew it in Ottawa and I threw my remote control
against the wall. Better not happen again tonight, Defense, show up,
offense has been great. It's gonna be a great one tonight.

Speaker 4 (01:05:26):
Did you break the remote? Well, obviously, what do you
think that? Did you fix your remoinery?

Speaker 1 (01:05:30):
Thing came off?

Speaker 7 (01:05:31):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (01:05:31):
Okay, the back, Yeah, the back I whipped it. Stupid,
just dumb football in Outawa. It was not great. It
was not great also happening locally tonight Victoria Royals taking
on the expansion Penticton vs. Seven o'clock over in Victoria.
In Langley tomorrow night, the Giants twenty fifth anniversary season

(01:05:52):
getting underway with their home opener again against the Penticton
B's seven o'clock puck drop five pm is the welcome barbecue.
And I should say, by the way, the Giants have
a lot of things planned for this special twenty fifth
anniversary season, whether it's theme nights, other things they're doing,
so head to the Giants website to get all the
details on that and the BC Hockey League kicking off

(01:06:13):
Sir Eagles home opener tonight. That ranks a couple of
minutes away from me. I'm gonna go watch those kids
I left. Oh wow, I'm gonna go watch those kids
out in white Rock the Junior a hockey Junior be
all those kids. I love those kids. They all do
a good job.

Speaker 4 (01:06:27):
Yeap, No, absolutely so, a lot a lot happening when
it comes to local sports over the weekend. You wanted
to show this so Travis Green, of course, good pal
of yours and good friend of the show as well,
is a good guy yesterday, Senator's training camp getting underway
and somebody tweeted out this photo.

Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
Travis Green training camp claimed its first victim. And what
does this remind you of? Travis Green in Vancouver in
absbird show it leve only you, Levey, where's only a levee?
Can you put him up? Can you put those pictures
up together? We can't put him upside by side? Okay? Anyways,
but Nina does have the U leve one Travis bag

(01:07:10):
sketch the hell out of you, he really does. This
is only leve and abbas Ford a few years ago.
If you you can't do this, never mind, Ryan, you
can't do this at a National Hockey League camp, right,
never mind you're a fifth or sixth overall pick. You
can't do this. This is unacceptable. Yeah, and this was
probably the last straw for this kid, Oie Leve in Vancouver.

(01:07:33):
And I like Olie, you know, I feel bad about
what happened to him. He's a really good kid off
the ice. It just it wasn't meant to be for him.
But you can't do this. You can't do this in
a world where kids are now in bantam and midget
eating right, working out seven days a week doing all
that stuff. You get to the National Hockey and show
the Ottawa guy again, you show you get back to you.

(01:07:54):
You ought of a guy. By the way, is Dylan Cousins.
We show that Dylan Cousins. That's Dylan Cousins. Oh my, hey,
Dylan Cousins, Delta Academy, white Horse kid. And look at this.

Speaker 4 (01:08:05):
There's a lot of people responding to the comments, by
the way, conflicting reports on whether or not he blocked
a shot or whether this was a skating.

Speaker 1 (01:08:13):
See him holding his ankle, No, I just see he
could be in pain and he's in some kind of pain.
If somebody tweets this as a Travis Green and his
bag skates and he does that, Travis does every year.

Speaker 4 (01:08:26):
Yeah, every year in Vancouver. Travis Green did it. There's
a lot of people that responded saying Dylan is just
not used to this. They don't do this in WAFFLEO.

Speaker 1 (01:08:33):
Hey, too bad. But when your coach tells you to
go work your ass off of the summer, be prepared
for day one a camp. He's telling you to be
prepared for day one to camp.

Speaker 4 (01:08:42):
Well, the one thing I will say to Rick is
I think it goes to show how hard these tests are, because,
let's be honest, hard even an out of shape nhller,
it's still in really good shape, and yet they get
affected like this. It was interesting that Adam Foot that
they did their skating test behind closed doors.

Speaker 1 (01:09:01):
I know he said space it out from camp, but
the players do it in camp. That was interesting. Yeah,
to keep it behind closed doors. If there was a
situation like this, you didn't see it because it wasn't
in front of the public. But Dylan Cousins, Uh, it
sounds like too many players are eating right. They have

(01:09:23):
nutrition coaches, they have skating coaches, they have fitness coaches,
they have weightlifting gym coaches. There's too many kids doing
the right things. You can't show up the camp out
of shape anymore. No, that is true. That's they can't
do that. That's a good point. So we'll see. I'm
I'm sure Dylan Cousins will be able to rebound travel.

Speaker 4 (01:09:41):
Seven eight million years exactly exactly. DTMC is next. But
first you've got some business to take care. Of course,
our friends at Pastime Sports.

Speaker 1 (01:09:50):
Check out the largest selection of sports member billy autographed items,
trading cards and collectible games in Western Canada Pastime Sports.
Look at this coming up in Langley Connor, Garland Sunday,
October fifth, Jake Nebraska on Saturday, and November twenty second.
He'll be getting some Pokemon cards, I think. And yeah,

(01:10:10):
he's a big Pokemon yes, and he lost some street
cred in the locker room apparently over then you told
me the pastime he's got Pokemon. They got lots, yes, Okay,
So Jonathan Lacara Macki is also going to be having
an autograph session, but they haven't announced that yet. Details
on these events, upcoming signings and card drops available pastime
sports dot ca A in front of the laptop today,

(01:10:32):
we've been talking about him quite a bit. That helmet
on the far left that is signed by Canucks goaltender
Thatcher Demco.

Speaker 4 (01:10:39):
He will I believe it was the season, not last season,
the season before he did his Pastime signing. See she's
autographed there on the top of the helmet. Puk in
the middle signed by Timuslanny. He was at Pastime Sports
recently as well. And that's of course the Anheim Ducks legend.
Lots of talk with the Ducks right now, what's going
on there and Cardo the day you just mentioned him.

(01:11:00):
Jake Debresk, we got to get one of him in
the Canucks uniform. I don't have it yet. I only
have him in a Bruins uniform. But there you go,
Jake Debresk.

Speaker 1 (01:11:07):
Unbelievable Carls today. I like that. And by the way,
if you haven't seen it, Jake de Bresk might be
the most positive interview going on the Vancouver Canucks. He
listening to him, you'll never have a job in the media.
Well that's a good point.

Speaker 4 (01:11:19):
But listening to him talk yesterday, that was that was
He's just bubbling, bubbling with happiness.

Speaker 1 (01:11:26):
It was. It was great. It was a great listen.
Coming up next DTMZ and Indy DTMZ.

Speaker 4 (01:11:32):
There's a significant anniversary today that we are going to
talk about. And you have birthdays as well. I got birthdays.
This is Donnie. I'm Ryan Henderson. It's Donnie and the
team on Check.

Speaker 1 (01:11:47):
It's eleven thirty two on a Friday morning. Donnie and
Donnie on Check TV. Now time for DTMZ, brought to
you by the world famous Swister Golf Club. Go see
Big l out there. A great track, great track DTMZ

in the progress of the renovation at the Whistler Golf

things on there, excavator work, that sort of thing. Okay
for DTMs today I said there's a big anniversary.

Speaker 1 (01:12:27):
I want to mention and I want to mention this.

Speaker 4 (01:12:29):
Our good pal Jason Beck from the BC Sports Hall
of Fame tweeting out earlier this morning, September nineteenth, on
this day in BC Sports History, nineteen ninety five, Wow,
GM Place now Rogers Arena officially opens, becoming the premier
hockey arena in BC, seating over eighteen thousand for hockey,
nineteen thousand for basketball, and the first event in the

(01:12:49):
new building was a concert.

Speaker 1 (01:12:51):
By Brian Adams.

Speaker 4 (01:12:53):
Brian Adams, the first sporting event by the Way was
an exhibition game between the Canucks and the then Mighty
Ducks of Anaheim.

Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Yes remember that, where the Canucks won four to three.
The first goal scored at GM Place was by Knuck
defenseman Jeff Brown. Jeff Brown, that's right, you were probably
not gonna get that. But anyway, so thirty years. The
building open for thirty years. Brian Adams. The other night
last Friday, right, Brian Adams are Evander Kaine came on

(01:13:20):
stage and they unveiled a banner. I'm assuming it's gonna
stay up all year, and it wasn't just for that night,
but they unveiled a banner. See next week when they're
going to play a home preseason game. They unveiled the
banner highlighting that Brian was the first act, you know,
to play at Rogers Arena. Someday that rink is gonna
get too old and they're gonna people are going to say,
we need a new hockey rink for the Canucks. Uh,

(01:13:42):
you just mark my words, that's not going to be
there forever.

Speaker 4 (01:13:45):
And I will say, Rick, you've you've brought this up.
I do take my shots. I have taken my shots.
Ridiculous they've done a pretty decent job of keeping up
that building, considering the footprint that it's on, you know.

Speaker 1 (01:13:59):
And they put in a new ice plant at Rogers
Arena as well. Okay, so there was a ton of
money spent new scoreboard recently. You may not think that,
but there was a ton of money spent this summer. Well,
there you go. So they're continuing to update it. Thirty year,
thirty years old today, the birthday of GM Place slash
Rogers Arena. I still remember BC Place opening up? Were
you there? Yes, a little Ricky? What was the first

(01:14:21):
event to be Sounders? The white captain Sounders? Peter Beersley
scored the first two goals. Sixty thousand people there, Little
Ricky was in the end zone up high. Wow. All right,
well there you go. Did you get rick Did you
get one of those hats that was BC placed those hats?

Speaker 7 (01:14:36):
No?

Speaker 1 (01:14:36):
No, I didn't one the BC Place. It's like, I
know which one you're talking about. Yeah, yeah, we should
get one for the show and get Rick to wear it.
Yeah yeah, But I'm old enough to remember the opening
a BC Place, never mind Rogers Arena.

Speaker 4 (01:14:49):
It is hard to believe thirty years for Rodgers Arena
but anyway, time for birthdays, time after goals, and there's
a new new sponsor for birthdays that we have now.

Speaker 1 (01:14:57):
I don't want you cheating. I'm not look that way.
I'm not looking close.

Speaker 4 (01:15:00):
I'm not looking all right, Nina, as she just timed
to Nina will be helping as well. Okay, you know you,
Derek is well know Derek. Derek Hell might get master control.
Everyone's got a part in this. Today's tough.

Speaker 1 (01:15:12):
You guys are gonna have to give you a warning
right now. Okay, today's tough. All right music, It's September nineteenth,
four birthdays, uh, brought to you by that got Where
where's that? I'm gonna ask Little Rickey's grocery store casino
in what task? When Alberta I worked there in ninety four?
Cars costs less with task When Alberta I just talked
to a buddy up there a couple of weeks ago,

(01:15:33):
the cars still cost less and with task when Alberta.

Speaker 4 (01:15:37):
This courtesy again our good pal Justin in East Van,
who said this good graphic.

Speaker 1 (01:15:42):
So is that you on like a Simpson's body? Is
that what that is? Or some kind of cartoon body? Sorry?
A weird body, but little Ricky's grocery store casino, because
I'm going to I've been going to Trevor Linden's gym
out so Surrey. Yeah, what's what's going on with your teeth?
They're very white? What's Linden's gym called Linden sixteen Club

(01:16:04):
sixteen Club six TV Fitness. But he got the orange shirt, right,
the orange shirt, orange shirt, orange shirt? Yeah? Or what
well you got the orange waian shirt on? It's an
orange shirt on there. Oh yeah, let's get going all right.
In two thousand, he was the second goalie in NHL
history to go first over in the NHL draft Marc

(01:16:25):
Andre Fleury Nope. His last game in the NHL was
twenty twelve. Mike, he is, he is still being paid.
I think Derek got it by a National Hockey League team.
Mikey Pietro, Rick d Pietro Ri Sorry, okay, this one.
You're not gonna get a guarantee you take of the bank.
Call for you. Yeah. Taken second overall by the Philadelphia

(01:16:45):
Flyers in the twenty seventeen NHL Draft, three picks before Elliots. Patterson. Yeah,
Nolan Patrick, Yeah, you got well, isn't that who Benning won. No,
Benning wanted Cody Glass. Benning wanted Cody Glass. Yeah, that's right.
He was in Portland. Benning played in Portland. He loved him.
He loves his Western Hockey League guys. But he was

(01:17:06):
Ron de lorm was one of the major guys who
said we got to take Peterson. And boy was Ron
de lorm right. All right, this head coach won the
Stanley Cup with the Penguins in two thousand and nine.
He's been ahead of Osma. Yeah, this is this is fishy.
This is fishy. No, if Nina had gone down, that

(01:17:28):
would have been fishing. He shouldn't be nailing these guys
on the first clue. All right, let's go. Canadian No
comedian an actor who became known for his impressions that
Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Adam Sadler on Saturday Night Live.
Is he Canadian? Not comedian, just not a Canadian. He

(01:17:48):
has appeared in many films, including Almost Famous, Fever Pitch
and Whip It, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Fallon. I never thought
of him as impressions. I remember Seinfeld. One is pretty good.
I was Fever Pitch, I remember him and Fever Pitch.
For sure, you watched Fever Pitch. Why wouldn't I watch Fever?
I watched. It's an awful movie. I got a girl
that was in it with Drew Barrymore. Drew Barrymore. Yeah,

(01:18:12):
and then one thing that Baseball Cups. Yeah, yeah, no, no,
it was Red Sox and people ripped that because Fallon
was a big Yankees fan. It didn't really jive. That's it.
That's it. That's it. Yeah. No, women, now, well, I
can't control that birthdays or birthdays. I can't control who
what we did well, we did well all of us.

(01:18:34):
I didn't know fishy On you a couple of quick
ones there, No, no, not today. We mentioned you got
Sidney Sweeney last week. Yeah, we mentioned thirty years ago Rogers,
me and GM place opening up Brian Adams. Okay, So
to play us out today off the reckless album Kids
Want to Rock. Oh but you didn't pick Cuts Like

(01:18:56):
a Knight, because just to bother you, I decided to
pick it's one of the best. The best song is
Cuts Like a Knife by a Country Mile. I know.
I think Donnie says the same, right, No, yeah, Donnie,
and I agree. You said Summer sixty nine. I No,
it's his most well known. In my opinion is my favorite.
Touch like a Knife.

Speaker 4 (01:19:12):
Great video is running you, but this is Kids Want
to Rock. This is Brian Adams Thirty years ago. GM
Place opened up.

Speaker 1 (01:19:28):

Basside Resort, Parksville dot com. I do want to mention quickly, Rick,

(01:20:41):
we were talking about the weekend a lot of things
happening locally and involving the Canadian sporting scene, the Canadian women.
The Women's Rugby World Cup is going on right now.
The Canadian women are facing off the number two ranked.

Speaker 1 (01:20:55):
In the world.

Speaker 4 (01:20:56):
Canadian women are facing off against the New Zealand women
at the moment. If you're pe v ring this spoiler alert,
but it's currently seventeen to nothing Canada over the New
Zealand women.

Speaker 1 (01:21:06):
And we did have somebody right in the inbox to
shut out as well as Sophie de Goody. She's from
Victoria and she's on that squad. So good luck to
the Canadian women. Hopefully they finish this game off against
New Zealand. Time now for is it just me?

Speaker 3 (01:21:21):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (01:21:21):
And this one here? Is it just me?

Speaker 4 (01:21:25):
Or does Rick actually go to the gym? He he
he doesn't know the name of the gym but claims
to go there. That's from John to go to Trevor
Linda's Jim three times a week? Did you go three
times a week? You don't see the big lettering. See
Trevor's face in the front of the building. That's all
I need to know. Trevorn, his face is in the

(01:21:46):
He's got pictures all over of himself.

Speaker 1 (01:21:48):
Well, what do you think of someone else? He's got
pictures of Linden all over. The is actually going, yeah, yeah,
it encourages you along. Yeah, Trevor Lanza. There's tons of
pictures of Lindon, and Trevor should be giving me half
off all my membership. But clearly Lindon get going. As

(01:22:10):
for Evander Kaine, he'd be a perfect fit with Petterson
the Power Forward. He needs to feed the puck to
remember Naslin would Brutuzia perfect fig Don and Chickamu's This
is exactly what I was talking about, and I wanted
to see Kane with Petterson for these exact reasons that
Don and Chickamoo's has pointed out. Don and I a
great mind shink alike. Yeah again though I I I

(01:22:31):
think you know, we probably get too wrapped up into
training camps. I mean, it can all change and it helps.
It starts, chemistry starts somewhere, it doesn't start in the middle.
So you're right, You're right, You're a right.

Speaker 4 (01:22:45):
It'll be interesting to see if you see, like maybe
you see that combination go together to Seattle. I'd be
surprised if all three of those guys went to Seattle
for the first preseason game on the weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:22:55):
No, no, I doubt it.

Speaker 4 (01:22:56):
Uh this Uh, First of all, a lot of people
are saying, by the way, a lot of people in
the baside ocean thrumbers or inbox saying that Rick is wrong.

Speaker 1 (01:23:05):
First event at BC Place was off. I meant the
first sporting event, because he was saying that David Bowie call,
David Boie was first. I do remember this. This is
David Surrey. The first event was actually a truck and tractor.
Oh yeah, it was tracked and tractor first, then Bowie.
But I was talking about the first sporting event, which
was the white Caps and the Sounder. The Sounders. Yeah,

(01:23:25):
that Peter Beardsley, who I is my favorite white Cap
of all time, had two goals. I believe you told
Carl Valentine he was your favorite of them, Carl, Bob Leonardsey.
I love Bob, I love Carl. But Peter Beardsley, oh man,
he was good. Go ahead? Uh Sidney Crosby, Is it
just me? Sidney Crosby has had concussion problems in the

(01:23:48):
first few years. He changed his game and his off
ice a routine. So maybe that's where Heatl's gotta go.
RP and White Rock. Good submission. Yeah, it's a really
good submission. I think they did a lot of soul
searching the Canucks and Heatl this summer to say, hey,
because he can't afford any more concussions. He's had a
few in his career, and maybe they're gonna put him

(01:24:09):
in better spots on the ice to make sure he
doesn't get them. I think. But he can't control a stupid,
dumb play by another player that he can't control the
cheap shot, He can't control an elbow and they head
out of nowhere, right. He can't control what Dickinson did
to him from Chicago and gave him his last concussion.
I think because of his longevity, I think sometimes we
do forget about how plagued Crosby's career was by those concussions.

(01:24:32):
Number the number. The outdoor outdoor game. Yeah, that was
the one where he got the first big one. Yeah.
But I mean the fact he's been able to go on,
I mean it should give Philip Heedo hope.

Speaker 4 (01:24:46):
An article in an interview with with Hetel talking about
the way they looked over the summer at his game,
rewatched game film and how he was playing and maybe
there were some things they could change this one here, U.

Speaker 1 (01:25:00):
Is it just this is Trey the Gulf Island ferry worker.
Is it just me or Donnie choose the wrong extra
day off? Wednesday is superior to both Monday and Friday,
as you only ever have a two day work week.
So he said, take Wednesdays, honey, Yeah, I did that
up in fourtaint John. You took Wednesdays off because I
was doing so much senior hockey, junior hockey. But the
reason I pick Wednesdays because it was two for one

(01:25:22):
jug night at the bar on Tuesdays. Okay, So I
tried I go there and sleep in Wednesday until my
boss figured it out and he said no more because
I took him out Tuesday. And he's like well, hold
there you're sleeping in so you put an end to that. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:25:36):
But the only thing is the one thing I'll disagree
with Trey is it takes a lot you get you
don't get in a rhythm though that way.

Speaker 1 (01:25:43):
Stop breaking, Stop you're breaking exactly you're breaking it up. Okay,
look at this one. I have a gut feeling the
Foot is a real players coach, and I feel they
may surprise us and do well. Uh, this is sav
in Van City. I've been impressed with Foot so far.
Really have he got to the leadership group early in
the summer. He looks like he's very organized, detailed, but

(01:26:07):
he would have got that from talking. So he looks
like a guy that he knows what he's doing. He's detailed,
he's organized, Like I like what I see from Folint
so far.

Speaker 4 (01:26:15):
Well, and and again Rick the talking about the summer
and getting together with players very early on, and the
players clearly feel you know, I'm not saying that didn't
happen under Rick talking, but it feels like this season
in particular, that they have been handed this task to
rise up in a leadership capacity. Oh especially look at

(01:26:38):
now Demco extension Petterson. We know about his contract. You know,
there's responsibility with that, and I think these guys are
trying to show that they can handle that responsibility.

Speaker 1 (01:26:50):
And we'll see how it works out for this season.
Uh that's it.

Speaker 4 (01:26:54):
Phrase it's just me at least for this segment. Might
get into a couple extra ones in the next segment.
In our final segment of the week, we wrap up
the pole question as well. This is Donnie and Dowis,
the team on check looking for.

Speaker 1 (01:27:07):
One of Victoria's most iconic stays. The award winning Waddling
Dog has been welcoming guests and their dogs for over
thirty years. Ten minutes from the airport in the Ferry.
Their rooms blend vented charm with modern comfort, making it
the perfect home base for your island adventures. Your trip
isn't complete without a stop at the legendary Waddling Dog.

(01:27:28):
Pop twenty taps wald Wall, TVs every Canucks game and
UFC pay per view, plus an extensive daily happy hour,
and before you go, stock up at their cold beer
wine store, hundreds of local and imported options, plus exclusive
Donnie and Dolly merchandise. The Dog isn't just a hotel,

(01:27:49):
It's a destination come sentence day now you got me there?
Ok we got them.

Speaker 4 (01:27:55):
Test has a little technical hiccup to end our week.
So unfortunate we don't have music coming into this segment.

Speaker 1 (01:28:00):
But that's okay. We we soldier on. We will wrap
up our wadling Dog poll question though, at least for
the TV portion of the show experience one of Victoria's
iconic destinations, sleep, sip, and stalk up all in one
legendary spot. Come sit and stay at the dog today.
All right, Nina got her up the waddling Dog pop

(01:28:21):
pole question? What should the Canucks top line be to
start the season Besser Patterson and Cain or Besser, Peterson
and debrask Look at this, This is a really good question.
Fifty two percent say with Cain and forty eight percent
say with DeBras seven hundred votes already on a Friday,
it's hop and it's popping. We got a ton of birthdays,
So what do we do now? You got the birthdays first,

(01:28:42):
and then we got a picture. Okay, listen, Kyle and
Alberta a happy birthday, big fan of the show, good
pal of mine. So Kyle and alberta happy birthday. To
Dave and Cedar. Dave had four hundred and ninety people
Texas in today, his mom, the Sizzler, his son sixty
seven boys. So happy birthday to Dave and Cediar. You've
got a lot of people that love you. And Steven

(01:29:03):
Abersford turning sixty four today. So there you go. You
just did Stephen Abitsford, right, Stephen Abmsford.

Speaker 4 (01:29:09):
Good, good turn at six before we've got to pick. Yeah,
we got a picture. This apparently is your photo from
your buddy or something.

Speaker 1 (01:29:15):
This is my pale. Hold on a second, what's his name? Chris? Chris?
You got Chris back in Toronto donning Dolly's shirt. He
was in Europe all right, all over every city, Copenhagen,
Italy to whatever. He was all over Europe and now
he's I guess he's making his way back to Vancouver.
He's in Toronto and your favorite place that's just stop

(01:29:37):
Blue Jays go. But anyway, so you're gonna you're gonna
vote for the marriage one hundred percent. So you're gonna
vote for the marya one hundred all day long. What
a copt And we should mention the Jays could clinch
a playoff spot. Tonight they could. You'll vote for an
American team day because because you will vote for the
Canadian it doesn't care. But I was two and three. Yeah, okay,

(01:30:02):
so you didn't care about ninety three ninety five. I
was three and four. So I've been following the Blue
Jays since their days of the Sea. I get that,
but I just have no allegiance to something Toronto. I
know it's baseball. I hate Toronto as much as you do,
but this is Canada's only baseball team. Get on board.
I will say.

Speaker 4 (01:30:23):
I can't believe I'm gonna admit this, and I'm still
more of a Mariners fan than a Jays fan. The
Jays are very entertaining. Did George Springer comeback season? I
think they're They're pitching staff is I'm worried about. I'm
worried about the bullpen.

Speaker 1 (01:30:37):
It's not. It's a bit struggling. They should have addressed
the bullpen at the trade and deadline. Yeah, you're right.
Shane Bieber though he's looked decent.

Speaker 4 (01:30:43):
They brought him in so Jay's could clinch a playoff
spot tonight. They take on the Royals this weekend for
weekend series.

Speaker 1 (01:30:49):
The Mariners are in Houston to take on the Astros,
and this is a whopper of a series. Both teams
tied right now at the top of the Al West.
So this is a big series for buy your cheese
in the US yep, your cheer for US based baseball team. Yeah.
I haven't got any cheese in the US in a while.
By the way, I don't want to hear all this
elbows up thing in the inbox. I haven't bought any

(01:31:10):
groceries down there in a bit. I might have to
go to Bellis Fair soon. Oh really, just giving your head, Jon,
all right, we have time for a couple more. Is
it just me? Where was there was a good one
in here that I wanted to mention this one? Rick
in the Ridge? Is it just me?

Speaker 4 (01:31:27):
Or do local cats laugh at Rick and his dog
in their matching raincoats?

Speaker 1 (01:31:32):
Do you have a matching raincoat? No, a ring, I
have a raincoat. My dog's got a different raincoat. But
I take them out every day, four or five times,
even in the rain, because I love them.

Speaker 4 (01:31:41):
Okay, that's nice of you. Okay, that's it for us.
We're wrapped up another week of the show in the
books again. Canucks in Penticton for training camp. First preseason
game coming up on Sunday in Seattle. Donnie will be
back on Monday. We'll have a full recap. We should
have Friedman on the show as well, and forness. Thanks

(01:32:02):

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
