Los chicos fueron acorralados en un cruce de caminos dentro de la finca conocida como Charco Lentisco. El mayor de los peones, José Manuel Yepes, les disparó por la espalda mientras los aspirantes a torero corrían para salvarse, pero un misterioso segundo tirador les cortó el paso y abrió fuego contra ellos.
Ese segundo tirador no ha sido jamás identificado.
