Ego podcast, because the environment isa theme for everyone. This one'
s hello how I' m doingwith a warm greeting. This is Pepe
Morón and along with Erlenci Gutiérrez,we welcome you to this chapter of RCN

(00:27):
Radio' s echo podcast. Todayspeaking of Cop 16 and the city of
Cali, the most important meeting ofbiodiversity that can take place these days and
during this two thousand twenty- fourwill be in Colombian territory. That is
very important for our country and inthis episode we will be analyzing, because,

(00:53):
so, you know, prepare acoffee, look for a little corner,
comfortable and prepare for this journey throughthe environmental world. Welcome a truly

(01:15):
historical fact and I do not exaggerateby classifying it that way, referring to
the environment of our Colombian territory, and is that our country has the opportunity
to host this event for the firsttime And Cali is the venue of this

(01:37):
day that includes economic and tourism development, as well as environmental. And above
all, in a territory such asValle del Cauca, which is part of
all this so affected peaceful, affectedby the issue of public order, affected
for many by the state oblivion, affected by the environmental part that has been

(01:57):
ravaged by illegal armed groups, byillegal mining, by illicit crops and so
much damage that the environment has beensuffering in that region of the country,
region that, as we said, will be host to one of the most
important meetings of Biodiversity, But Lessiand how do you think if we go
directly to that region to know alittle what is said from there in front

(02:22):
of Cop sixteen and how it isreceived, not only in Valle del Cauca,
but in the city of Cali.Well, let' s listen to
Diana Villegas, from the capital ofValle del Cauca, who tells us how
they received the news of the designationof the city of Cali as the house

(02:46):
of the sixteen CALE COT. Uponreceiving the seat of Cop 16 of Biodiversity,
it will be before the eyes ofthe world. Its landscapes, the
more than 200 species of birds, among other environmental benefits, made the Green
Jewel of Valle del Cauca welcome thisimportant international summit in October. This has
been said by the Mayor of Calia, Alejandro Eder and Governor Dilian Francisca Toro.

(03:06):
We have shown that it is biodiversityto take care of life. It
is an opportunity to promote reconciliation. To achieve this event in Calli we joined
from the public sector, with theprivate sector, with the academic sector,
with community groups, Afro- Cabildoscommunities, indigenous communities, business unions,
all of society united with one voice. Happy because we won the 16th COT.

(03:29):
We won it for Cali, whichis not only the capital of the
Cauca Valley, but the capital ofthe Pacific. The Pacific is the second
most biodiverse region in the world. Here COP 16 are going to live biodiversity.
They' re not gonna tell you. The river pance Cauca, Lilí,
Cali and Aguacatal, Cañaveralejo and Meléndezare the seven rivers that cross the

(03:51):
city. There is also the vastnessof the National Natural Park for jones with
one hundred and ninety- six thousandfour hundred and twenty- nine hectares that
guarantee a purer air, plus morethan twelve eco parks and sixty- one
wetlands that account for the biodiversity thatthis capital has. This is what Mario
Mina, the director of the DAGMA, said. We have one of the
most biodiverse regions on the planet. We have people of all ethnicities, cultures,

(04:13):
etc, and we have all theriches and, above all, the
ability to develop the best cop thatthe planet has had, that we have
any number of fauna species since Flora. We are a crucible because we are
at the center and the geographic factmakes us unique on the planet. In
this sense, Cali will also representthe greatness of the entire Colombian peace-
keeper and will be a sanctuary forwildlife in the region. This would be

(04:35):
a very good opportunity for the city, because it would help us a lot
in the hotel, tourist, commercial, economic sector for the city. It
would be great, it would bebeneficial for the whole city, for taxi
drivers, for the people who makeit on the street, because tourists are
going to increase. A lot ofpeople are gonna make it. I believe
that in our service it can bemore than thirty or forty percent increase in

(04:59):
racing. We' re all goingto benefit. I find it very good,
because they will know the people whocome abroad will know the gastronomy all
the products that they do not knowthere and because they do collaborate us because
it increases the sales. I thinkit' s very good that Chalice is
the seat according to EDU and cursedSecretary of Economic Development of Calin. On
the economic front, it is expectedto leave at least$ 11 million in

(05:24):
accommodation,$ 5 million in otherexpenses, such as restaurant and transportation,
and at least$ 3 5 millionin logistics. In addition, it was
a great opportunity for the business fabricof the region, as an economy dynamic
of more than$ 20 million isestimated. We have everything, we have
infrastructure, we have human capital andwe have diversity. Calin represents as never

(05:46):
before that cultural, ethnic and naturewealth that we have in our country and
we are going to receive all thesedelegations from more than one hundred and ninety
countries so that these global discussions areseen here we can talk about diversity and
how we talk in a sustained manner. Hotel occupancy will be another important aspect.
According to data from Cotelco Valle, the department has nine hundred and twenty

(06:10):
- five hotels with a capacity ofmore than twenty- one thousand rooms and
meeting rooms, as well as highquality medical centers that are in the top
ten of Latin America and, ofcourse, the Pacific Valley event center,
with a total area of seventy-six zero square meters and the capacity to
house at least twelve zero people OscarGuzmán, Executive President of Cottelcovalle. This
is an event of the Colombian Pacific. We are going to tell the world

(06:32):
that there are one hundred and ninetydelegations who are going to visit us from
21 October to 1 November. Whatwe have this paradise full of riches and,
most importantly, its warm hospital peoplealeg That is why, also from
the hotels we have a very bigresponsibility to house those thirteen zero tourists who
will come to work at the Cupto work in the future of the diversity

(06:53):
of the world and we expect aneconomic spill of eleven million dollars in accommodation,
five million dollars in what is othercases such as restaurants, transportation and
three five million dollars in it fora large total of about twenty- two
million hours. That is why thisevent, in addition to being a great
showcase for us to know in theworld the valley and the Pacific, will

(07:13):
also give us important economic resources inthe economic dynamics of our region, the
Colombian Pacific. In view of thissituation, work tables have already been set
up in which different entities will participateGovernorship, mayor, guilds, Chamber of
Commerce as well as pro- Pacific, among other organizations, with the purpose
of making articulation and synergy before thebiggest event that the city has had in

(07:36):
its history. Cop sixteen is anopportunity to show Cali and Valle del Cauca,
the world, show another side and, from this, receive additional opportunities
in which the city and the regiongive you epicenters to make events, weaving
on the resume the realization of thegreatest summit of biodiversity. We continue with
this information related to COP sixteen, which will be or will be possible to

(08:01):
do in Colombia from October to theend of October of this two thousand twenty
- four. But in a certainway, it must be said that COP
16 is already underway in the cityof Cali, This under the leadership of
the Minister of Environment Susanamo Amat, when the installation of the first steering committee

(08:22):
was launched to hold some key discussionissues for this important meeting that brings together
leaders from all over the world, which brings together issues of great importance for
the whole planet, and one ofthose key points is how it will be
financed, how the necessary resources willbe obtained for the realization of this important

(08:48):
event. And this was said bythe Minister of Environment Sushanamom. The Steering
Committee is already starting to land theactual costs, because obviously we have initial
initial costs. But the negotiating frameworkor rather the framework of the CD agreement
that we have to sign with theConvention is beginning to land. It'

(09:09):
ll be signed very soon in thenext few weeks. It is a first
commitment of two million dollars to beable to have all the infrastructure of the
United Nations and then the country, because it will bear the expenses of the
entire logistic organization of the Convention Itis also prudent to hear erlensi that the

(09:33):
organizers of this important meeting say atinternational level the main attendees of this Biodiversity
Summit, as is the sixteen thatwe can count if pepe It is the
interim Executive Secretary of the UN Conferencefor Biodiversity, David Cooper, who congratulated

(09:54):
Cali for being the headquarters of theCODGE will be held in October of this
year. I would like to offermy sincere congratulations to the city of Clly
for having been selected to host COPTISand six to host the United Nations Conference

(10:15):
on Bidiversity two thousand twenty- four. We very much welcome this announcement made
by the Colombian organizer committee. Weespecially thank President Gustavo Petro, the Administration
Susan Mohammid and the entire Government ofColombia team. I think he also thanks

(10:39):
the city of Bogotá, as wellas the other candidate cities, which launched
vibrant campaigns to welcome the Coptysis andsix for us in the Convention on Biological
Diversity. He is greatly encouraged towitness Columbia' s credible commitment and dedication

(11:03):
at all levels of government and societyin general to continue to demonstrate its leadership
in the international realm of viversity. As it celebrates almost two years after the
adoption of the World Moco for theBidiversity of Comming Montreul, the sais Coptysis

(11:26):
will be of significant importance, asit will contribute to catalyzing solutions to move
from agreement to action, facilitating therapid and effective implementation of the most ambitious
plan for diversity that have been adoptedto date. During this Conference, the

(11:50):
parties to the Convention are expected topresent their national strategies and action plans for
viversity, aligned with the goals andobjectives of the Convention. Among other important
matters. It is also expected thatthey will further develop the monitoring framework,

(12:11):
advance the mobilization of financial resources andfinalize the multi- lateral mechanism. The
sharing of benefits arising from the useof digital information on genetic resource sequences to
a vague biological, ethnic and culturalinno- diversity. In one of the

(12:33):
countries with myobidiversity of the colliding worldundoubtedly the global focus where the international community
will negotiate these matters of great importancewe see in Cali. Thank you very
much, Wetterns. You know whatour experts, our guests, say is

(12:56):
key to us. And on thisfirst topic, we have today as a
guest Maritza Florian, who is aspecialist in climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem
services of the WF Colombia. Wewelcome her to this chapter of the eco
podcast Maritsa and thank you for acceptingthis invitation, Pepe Thank you so much

(13:20):
for inviting us. Since we arehappy with the COPI news of speaking a
little more for him and that isundoubtedly the main theme and what motivates us
to have her as guest. TheCop in Colombia, COP sixteen, which
was confirmed would already be in thecity of Cali. What can we say.
First, let us explain a littleto the listeners what this meeting is

(13:43):
about, what the COP 16 isabout. Of course, well, the
thing is the most outstanding biodiversity summitin the world. So why the Conference
of the Parties is a conference ofthe parties. They are the nations where
nations that are party to the UnitedNations Convention on Biological Diversity meet. It

(14:07):
is a convention that brings together allthe countries of the world around three main
objectives, namely the conservation of biodiversity, its sustainable use and a topic related
to the fair diffusion of benefits fromthe use of genetic resources. Then this
conference happens every two years. Itis important that we distinguish it from the

(14:33):
conference or the weather thing that wesometimes also hear, that there are some
other things, but that is thebiodiversity cop. It is number sixteen and
will take place in Colombia, asthis meeting is broken between the different regions
of the world. Then, onthis occasion it will be Latin America,
it will be in Colombia and therewill be very important discussions on biodiversity this

(14:58):
year. Let' s get alittle into that where it' s going
to be discussed this year at Cop16. What are some of the topics
that are scheduled or hopefully can beaddressed at this important meeting. Sure.
Thank you very much, because thisparticular Cup happens in the middle already in
verinta twenty- four of a criticaldecade of two thousand twenty to twenty thirty,

(15:18):
we say that we must act withrespect to the triple trins of biodiversity,
climate and pollution. And because thisparticular cup is the first that happens
after something called the new Global Frameworkfor Biodiversity. So, this particular comma,
because we have the challenge of reviewinghow the implementation of this new framework

(15:43):
is going. That new framework istwenty- three goals that the world agreed
upon to stop the loss of diversityand reverse this loss. So, in
this particular way, we' regoing to review how countries are going with
respect to these strategies to meet thosetwenty- three goals that may come out

(16:07):
sounding a little bit abstract, butthose twenty- three tables. There is
one that is well known, whichis, for example, the goal conservation
area of land areas, which atleast thirty percent of our nets and marines
are protected. But she' snot the only one. Twenty- three
of these are some that point toconservation, some that aim to improve collectivity,

(16:27):
some that aim to reduce the extinctionof certain species, to improve the
use of natural resources, to mobilizefinancing, to generate capacities, among others.
So, mainly the issues of thiscos are to have strategies from all
countries, to see how they goto comply with these agreements, which are

(16:48):
the ones that govern this decade then, this new framework goes from twenty twenty
to twenty thirty and we are goingto meet in Colombia to see how we
are going. It' s themain topic of discussion. I am wonderful
to hear it, Maritsa Florian, and we are wondering because this code sixteen
will be in this country, becauseit is important for Colombia to make the

(17:14):
house of this new summit. Thankyou very much for that question. It
is very important for Colombia to makethe house of this summit. To the
extent that the national government has beena pioneer in the discussions of biodiversity,
in multilateralism, Colombia always stands outfor its ambitious positions, since, as
we know, Colombia is the secondmost diverse country in the world and we
have a leading role, not onlyto fulfill our national biodiversity gene, but

(17:38):
also to inspire and motivate an agendaat the international level in addition, as
it is a unique opportunity for thecountry, since, since these events mobilize
approximately we are waiting for twelve thousandor three thousand people from all over the
world to discuss aspects of biodiversity andthe visibility it will have. This for

(18:04):
the country is a very, veryimportant opportunity, for example, to get
an idea. We do not havean event of this magnitude organized on an
international scene as a precedent. So, that way we are already realizing that
it is an international scene for thecountry. It is a logistical, methodological,

(18:26):
thematic challenge, but it positions anenvironmental agenda that helps meet the goals
of the national agenda and that givesus a window to the world being one
of the most biodiverse countries. Then, it is definitely a platform where we
can have used our leadership and internallymake a harbinger of those concrete actions towards

(18:48):
more ambitious biodiversity agendas in the country. Positive for Colombia, Peru also does
not imagine positive for a region likethe one that contains Cali in Caliz will
be the headquarters. This also belongsto the whole Pacific issue, which is
experiencing a rather complex reality, notonly in matters of public order, but
also in environmental issues. How importantdo you think you can do this for

(19:14):
the region where this cop sixteen willbe found? We are very happy with
the selection of streets as the firstCOV in Colombia after the adoption of the
Global Biodiversity Frameworks, for several reasons, among them because, therefore, it
is a place very close to ourvision, to our mission, to our

(19:38):
operations in this city. We startedoperations thirty years ago like WUF and we
did it for the same reasons thatthe national government gives a support here I
saw as a city critical to themanagement of the university and it is because

(19:59):
of the importance in the and ernicof the peaceful region. So, that
' s pantarazo in one of themost important sources of biological and cultural diversity
in the world. It is avery good sign to the extent that,
yes, it is a window tosee how good this region has in terms

(20:22):
of how to move a biodiversity careagenda in the country. And it was
very interesting to see how, sinceCallen put on his shirt to have a
very nice campaign, very ambitious inthe competition of the city selection and so,

(20:44):
an accompaniment to Calli. We arein a position to make this a
very successful event that has results thatimpact on the well- being of the
people of Colombia and the Colombian Pacific, of the WWF. Thank you for
accepting this call from the eco podcast, for telling us a little bit about

(21:07):
what is expected in this Cop Sixteen. Surely, when we are closer to
the date, we will sit againto review expectations and what we already have
by then, as coordinated for themeeting, which will be much closer.
Thank you so much for accepting thisinvitation. Thank you very much to you
and all the outstanding issues of thecomparison in Colombia. Thank you and we

(21:30):
continue with more information in this chapterof the RCN RAP PEPE eco podcast.
I propose that we listen to thedirector of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Valle
del Cauca, Marco Antonio Suárez, who celebrated that Cali is the next headquarters
of CO 16. The official indicatedthat the city has the necessary infrastructure for

(21:52):
the realization of this summit. Well, first of all, tell them that
we are proud and happy that Caliis going to receive COPI sixteen on biodiversity.
Good for the Colombian Pacific, oneof the most biodiverse areas in the
world. What a joy for ourblack communities, our indigenous communities, for

(22:12):
our peasants, for our young womanto roam from the sky. We'
re ready to receive them. Wehave all the capacity of the infrastructure,
the knowledge necessary for this historical copsianot only in our Cali and our Ayal
Cauca, but throughout our country. What a joy for the Caleños, what
a joy for all our Vallecaucanos, and that we enjoy that great event that

(22:36):
is going to take place now,in the month of October of this year,
thanks to all the Caleños, toall the Vallecaucanos that supported this initiative
and welcome to the COT sixteen forhere Cali is the headquarters of the COT
sixteen and so it should be becausethe city of Las Aves, the department
with the most protected areas of ourcountry. The wealth that our enormous cities

(22:59):
have in the capital by nature ofour Colombian Pacific and, as I expressed
it now, one of the mostbiodiverse places in the world, had to
be the headquarters of the sixteen andin this way we conclude our broadcast today,
not without first thanking, as always, Erlenz and Gutierrez, for accompanying

(23:22):
us in booth to the entire integratedinformation system that is under the direction of
Esperanza Rico and in the sound productionto wendy Benavides, thank you Ego Podcast,
