La serie relata míticos cuentos europeos a través de la combinación de actuación de actores reales y marionetas. La temática de dichos cuentos es muy variada, pero tratan los temas universales propios del folclore y de la tradición de los cuentos de hadas. Los episodios son contados por un viejo narrador, interpretado por John Hurt, sentado junto a una chimenea en un antiguo castillo renacentista, y siempre acompañado por su perro parlante, cuya peculiar voz fue aportada por Brian Henson.
