California is making a big play to bring productions back hom. KFI's entertainment reporter Heather Brooker breaks down the state’s newly expanded $750 million film and TV tax credit program, which just awarded $256 million to 22 projects, including Apple TV+’s The Studio and a brand-new HBO series from Larry David.

We’ll cover how these incentives are projected to spark $1.1 billion in economic activity, create thousands of jobs in Los Angeles, and reshape where Hollywood productions choose to film. Plus, what Marvel’s move away from Georgia means for crews and communities that once relied on its blockbuster business.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, it's Heather. Welcome to entertainment. We have a special

(00:02):
episode for you today. There has been some movement in
California's film and TV tax credit program. As a matter
of fact, the expanded film and TV tax credit program
went from three hundred and fifty million dollars to seven
hundred and fifty million dollars. Well, now we're getting some
news out of the Governor's office that twenty two projects
have been approved for the film and TV tax credit.

(00:25):
They are saying that this could bring one point one
billion dollars back into the economy here in California and
Los Angeles. So we're going to talk to Gary and
Shannon today and we're going to break it all down
for you on the Garyan Shannon Show.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Heather Brooker has joined us and we usually get to
talk to Heather on Fridays for an entertainment report.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
This is also entertainment related, yes, but the money, the
dollar signs behind entertainer.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Yeah, so this is good news.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
We're finding out that now twenty two productions have been
greenlit or given the go ahead of the tax incentive
from the new film and TV tax credit that was
just passed in July. So of course, all the powers
that be are touting that this is going to start
bringing more jobs in. I think they're estimating, and I
honestly don't know how they come up with this number,

(01:14):
but they estimate these twenty two shows alone, and these
twenty two projects will bring one point one billion dollars
back into the LA economy, sixty five hundred jobs. These
are shows that are going to be given across different platforms,
from half hour comedies to longer features, to animated shows,
that sort of thing. So it's it's good news. We're

(01:36):
finally going to see some movement off of this tax
credit that we've been talking about for so long.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
So stick Owen Wilson's show on Apple TV plus former
pro Golfer.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
We both tried to get into that I couldn't get
it into.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
We couldn't either kind of fell flat for me at
least is one of the projects getting the first round
of tax breaks available now this one. This show will
receive a forty percent credit, the highest percentage allowed because
it's moving from outside the state. This is one of
those examples of what we didn't think would happen where
a show is producing or doing all the shooting all

(02:13):
the things outside of the state and will never come
back because it's easier, it's cheaper, and it's great. This
was a show filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, which doubled
for Indiana and other locales in the Midwest.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
But it's going to come back. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
So that's one thing. That's one aspect of this that's happening.
Another show that's coming back, one of Gary's favorites, Tom
Segura's show, Yes, Bad Thoughts, is going to be moving
from Texas back here to LA And the reason they're
doing that is because there's a separate part of the
film and TV tax credit that gives them a little
extra money if they a little extra credit if they

(02:50):
come back from other places.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Side note, I didn't know Bad Thoughts was getting another season.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Yeah, and I am thrilled you're into it. Oh my god.
I love that show.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
I told I was very shame, like full of shame
when I would tell people how much I loved it.
It's it's very dark and very dirty, but I loved it.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
It's not for everyone. It's a very niche kind of
dark comedy show. So if you like that, then that's
all you're did, well, it's going to be filming here,
maybe you can be on it.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
I shouldn't want to get that close to it.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
I'm not like you, Heather, I as I want to
be in its. Well, no I don't. I've read some
of the scripts.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Politically speaking, Can this be a victory laugh for Gavin
Newsom or.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
I think so. I think so because a lot of
major productions the studio is going to be getting the incentive,
and that is a very LA centric show on Apple TV.
Plus they're going to continue to film here instead of
going somewhere else, So that's jobs that'll stay here. Larry
David's new show on HBO is going to be filming here.
Ken You Barris is at LA Native he wants to

(03:56):
film his new show here. He was one of the
ones that is going to be having his new show
film here as well. So I would say, yeah, for sure,
a victory lap because productions are here, productions are coming
back from other places. One other element to all of
this that is going to be a win and ultimately
bring I think more people back into La is happening

(04:17):
in Atlanta. So there's reports right now that Marvel, which
has been set up shop in Atlanta and basically build
these massive studios there, and a whole industry built grew
up out of these Marvel studios in Atlanta. Well, they're
moving the majority of their productions now to the UK
because it's cheaper. They don't have to pay health insurance.

(04:39):
There's certain rules and regulations that they don't have in
the UK that we have here. So now Marvel is
going to be saving a ton of money and they're
already leaving Atlanta. The studios there are like ghost towns
where hand reports they're just dead.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
And it may be too early to diagnose this, but
is this too little too late? I know it's a
massive amount of money, but the amount of productions, the
number of people who have moved out of state to
follow where the productions have gone, there's got to be
an aspect of it that, you know, over the course
of the next year or two, we'll see if it
is too little too late.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
I think what I'm hearing, And you know, a lot
of the people I talk to about this want to
be in California. They want to be in Los Angeles,
they want to be working in southern California. It's why
they moved out here in the first place. You know,
people come here to follow that dream and they want
to live their dream in Hollywood. I don't think it's
too far fetched to think that with this additional you know,

(05:33):
tax credit motivation out there and already shows that are happening,
to think that people will start coming back. I don't
think that it's too late in that Will we ever
get back to where we were maybe in the eighties
or nineties, I don't know. I don't think so. I
think there's so many other places that people can film now,

(05:53):
like the UK, where they don't have to provide everybody
health insurance because they have health insurance provide already for
the people there. So I think we're definitely going to
see a bump. I think it's going to be good
for people who are still here, who stuck it out
and who were you know, waiting it out. Their jobs
are going to be ready to go. They're going to
be applying like crazy. But to see the fact that

(06:14):
there's been a four hundred percent increase in applications for
the film and TV tax credit is a very good sign.
That means there's people producers want to work here, They
have their shows ready to go, their projects ready to go.
That means jobs are just around the corner. So I
hope it's not too late. Lit Gary doesn't believe.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
I'm just cautiously optimistic.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Same me too. How is the party? Oh my god,
it was so good.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
It looked great. Your dress was beautiful. Bit go on,
it was just perfect. Heather went to the downtown abbey.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
It was like a screaming yeah, yeah, the screaming, and
there was a special surprise, like the one of the
actors came out. His name is Alan Leech. She played
Tom the driver in the series. He came out and
greeted the crowd and it was it was fun. I
was trying to decide, like how over the top to dress?

Speaker 4 (07:10):
I think you nailed it.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
I was like, I'm I am a I'm a downstairs
gal who wants to look upstairs.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
So I guess I love that dress like in three life.
But it was perfect for the event.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
That's why I was hoping. I was like, there were
some people that were in full flapper. Some people were
like full Bridgerton regalia, and I was like, that's the
wrong time period.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
We let it slideailed it very Carrie Bradshaw in her best.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Era thank you.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (07:37):

need to go.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
He doesn't spend a lot of time trolling social media.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
On the sosh I went to the Downtown Abbey screening
Well I got that part, yeah and pop.

Speaker 5 (07:54):
When Joe showed up or what's his name? Would you say?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
His name was Joe tomm Yeah, Leach you pop in
the audience, They're like, oh my god, that Joe.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
They all screamed Joe and he was like, that's not
my name.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
No.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
There was a lot of excitement. Everyone squealed surprise and delight.
That's what some of these events are all about. They
like to surprise and delight people.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
I would like somebody to squeal on this show with
surprise and delight once in a while.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
If I came in here and did that, you guys
would be like, she's lost her damn mind.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
No.
