Speaker 1 (00:06):
Good News for Lefties and America. Hello, Hello, and welcome
to Good News for Lefties. I'm your host, baobol Frocklin,
you know, like the old English poem, but with fewer dragons,
here to bring you the sunny side of politics, where
the stories lean left and the news doesn't always feel
like staring into the abyss. Before we dive into today's stories, remember,
(00:31):
if you like what you hear, share this podcast with
someone who could use a smile during these dark times.

Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Let's
spread the joy far and wide. All right, folks, let's
start with a heartwarming tale, the second one of this
week out of the great State of Maine. Maine's Department
(00:55):
of Health and Human Services is saying no more shortcuts.
They're proposing a major overhaul of staffing rules for assisted
living and residential care facilities, the first big change in
over fifteen years. Now, I know what you're thinking, Beowulf.
Is it really good news if it took this long? Yes,
it is, because these changes could save lives and insure
(01:17):
dignity for thousands of seniors and people with disabilities. The
proposed regulations include doubling overnight staffing in care facilities, upping
memory care worker ratios, and adding stronger protections for residents
with dementia. And get this, Mains regulations could end up
tougher than federal nursing home standards. Brenda Gallant, the state's
(01:40):
long term care ombudsman fancy little title for resident advocate,
says the needs of these residents have skyrocketed, and it's
time the rules caught up. Now, let me just say
Gallant deserves a medal, maybe even a parade the cherry
on top. This could pave the way for other states
to follow suit. That's right, folks. Progress and Maine could
(02:03):
mean better care nationwide. In the words of Legal Services
for Main Elders, these changes quote have the potential to
prevent neglect, improve health outcomes, and foster environments where residents
feel valued and safe. I'm into that. Let's move on
to some electrifying news from the world of green energy.
(02:25):
In a move that will make Elon Musk's sandity slip
a little further, the Biden administration just approved a six
point six billion dollar loan for Rivian, the electric vehicle
company trying to give Tesla a run for its money.
This loan is a game changer. It's funding for a
new factory in Georgia, projected to create seventy five hundred
(02:46):
Union of friendly jobs. That's right, you heard me, union friendly.
The plant will pump out electric SUVs and trucks starting
in twenty twenty eight. And the best part, Rivian CEO
promised not to pose unionization efforts. Take that union busting billionaires. Meanwhile,
Elon Musk is out here whining about California ev rebates
(03:09):
not applying to Teslas. Oh boohoo. Elon, maybe stop campaigning
for Trump and start campaigning for workers. Anyway, Rivian is
rising like a phoenix from the ashes of corporate setbacks.
This loan ensures that they can build affordable evs for
the masses, because saving the planet shouldn't cost you your
entire paycheck. Before we get back to the news, I'd
(03:30):
like to tell you about a podcast called Love Doesn't
Pay the Bills. It explores the role of family caregivers
in the modern United States. Care work is vital to
all other aspects of life, yet often under resourced caregivers
can't provide for their own needs based on their love
for those they care for alone. Access to income matters.
(03:52):
Caregiving touches everyone at some point in their lives. So
listen to Love doesn't pay the bills. I'm a caregiver
and maybe you are too, or will be. Go to
Love doesn't pay the bills dot com. Listen on this
platform or wherever podcasts are heard up next. Ricky Winn
a right wing social media provocateur who loves to dunk
(04:16):
on San Francisco's homelessness crisis. He was arrested at SFO
for pimping and pandering. You can't make the stuff up, folks.
The man spends his days blasting progressive policies and his
nights apparently violating basic human decency. Police say they found
seventy nine thousand dollars in cash and evidence of sex
(04:38):
work at his apartment. Wynn, who has one hundred and
five thousand followers on Instagram and twenty nine nine hundred
followers on x, regularly posts political commentary about San Francisco
and videos of unhoused people and drug users on downtown streets.
I'm sure in violation of their privacy. He's made frequent
(04:58):
appearances on Fox News. And has attended events for we
San Francisco, a political organizing group, and the campaign for
Mayor elect Daniel Lurry. Looks like karma came knocking and
it didn't call first. Speaking of karma, let's check in
with everyone's favorite disgraced ex mayor Rudy Giuliani. This week,
(05:20):
Rudy lost his lawyers and his temper during a court
hearing over his failure to pay damages for defaming Georgia
election workers Ruby Freeman and Shay Moss. Quick reminder, Rudy
owes these two brave women one hundred and forty eight
million dollars for his baseless lives. The judge had no
patience for Rudy's antics. After failing to turn over assets
(05:44):
like a car he claims to have but can't find
the title for. Giuliani had a full blown tantrum in
court America's former mayor shouting, I don't have cash. Of course,
he is living in a multimillion dollar apartner. Also, Judge
Lewis Lyman allowed mister Giuliani's lawyers to withdraw from the
(06:05):
case they had requested to be removed two weeks ago,
citing an unspecified professional ethics concern. I wonder what that
could be about. In a statement on Tuesday, Kenneth Caruso,
one of his attorneys, said there had been a difference
of opinion with mister Giuliani, but they wished his new
council every success. Yeah, good luck, guys. Rudy's spiraling, folks,
(06:29):
and it's a mess. But for Freeman and Moss, justice
is inching closer. Up next, a listener submitted story back
in a minute. All right, it's time for my favorite
part of the show. Listener submitted stories. Today. We have
this from Jilda in Washington State. She writes, I just
(06:52):
recently started listening and wanted to thank you from mentioning
Washington State, where we voted to keep our Climate Commitment
Act by voting no on I two one one seven.
It's Initiative twenty one seventeen. I just wanted to let
you know. She continues that Washington voters also voted no
on twenty one oh nine and twenty one twenty four.
(07:13):
Those are also initiatives, which meant we got to keep
our capital gains tax and our Washington Cares program that's
long term care. These were both bills our legislature passed.
The measures were to repeal these bills. Washington state had
the most regressive tax system, mostly sales tax, and now
we moved up to forty seventh of worst. I think
(07:35):
we are using the money to fund education and childcare.
The Washington Cares program is a public insurance program for
long term care. Well, thank you, Jilda. As she said,
voters in Washington voted down initiatives twenty one oh nine
and twenty one twenty four. For Initiative twenty one oh nine,
this means retaining a capital gains tax that funds state
(07:57):
funded education and childcare programs. Good news. For Initiative twenty
one twenty four, it means the voter's projected allowing employees
and self employed people to opt out of the state's
long term care program and would have decreased funding for
Washington's public insurance program providing long term care benefits and services.
(08:17):
So that's good news if you like education, childcare, and
long term care for the disabled or elderly. Thanks again
so much, Jilda for listening, sending that in and sharing
the good news. Got thoughts, ideas, or more good news
