đź“– Episode Summary

In this solo episode of the Faithful Fitness Podcast*, Coach Alex VanHouten tackles one of today’s most controversial health trends: the rise of GLP-1-based weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and ZepBound.

As a faith-based health coach and exercise scientist, Alex unpacks the science behind peptides—what they are, how they work, and the pros and cons of using them in a health journey rooted in stewardship and discipleship.

But more importantly, this conversation goes deeper than biology and brand names. Should Christians be using these drugs? Can they be tools of stewardship—or are they shortcuts that skip the spiritual transformation required in our walk with God?

You’ll learn what peptides do in the body, how they impact satiety, insulin response, and lean muscle mass—and why none of that matters if you haven’t laid a strong foundation first.

With biblical encouragement and practical wisdom, Alex walks listeners through three critical prerequisites before considering these drugs: consistent weight training, high-nutrient eating, and adequate protein intake.

Whether you’ve considered taking these medications, are already on them, or are supporting a loved one who is—this episode offers clarity, caution, and Christ-centered perspective.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Oh zempic Manjaro wigovi zep bound. What are these peptides
and should Christians be using them? What's up, guys? My
name is Coach Alex van Houghten, exercise scientists and faith
based health coach who helps Christians over the last twenty
years make the most out of the body God's given them.
And if you want to dive more into my work,

(00:50):
you can find that here on the Faithful Fitness Podcast,
or you can join our free community at Better Daily.
You'll find the link in the show notes below. So
let's talk about peptides. What do you need to know
about making this a part of your health and fitness program.
We're going to cut through all the noise and all
the marketing and see what the science says about whether
or not this is a useful and wise thing to

(01:12):
make a part of your faith based stewardship program for
your body. If you've heard about one of these medications,
or maybe it's been recommended to you by your doctor
or even a friend, I want you to know everything
you need to know to make a wise decision about
what's right for your body and right for your health journey.
The first thing we're going to cover today are what
are peptides by what mechanisms are they working in the

(01:33):
body to create some of these really positive benefits we're
seeing and some of those negative side effects that should
be considered before using them. Second, we're going to be
talking about whether or not peptides have any place and
a faith based program for the body. Is it helpful
for stewardship? Is there any way to make this a
part of my program that's not vanity. We'll be discussing

(01:55):
that as well. In third, we're going to be talking
about the things that you need to be asking you
or doctor in order to make this a part of
your program if it's the right fit for you. So
let's get started first. What is a peptide. As an
exercise scientist, I love the science. I'm going to try
to make this as simple as possible. Peptides are basically
natural compounds that our body creates that are chains of

(02:17):
amino acids, and they signal things in the body. You
could think of them as kind of like a stoplight
in the body. The intersections of the body come together
and the livers trying to talk to the brain. It's like, hey,
whoa hold up? Or Hey let's go a little faster,
or whoa slow down. These peptides are signals on the
inside of the body that help certain things in the
body speed up and certain things in the body slow

(02:38):
down or even stop. And the two peptides people are
talking about when they reference ozepic or manjaro or zep
bound are the GLP one peptides. That's a glucagon like
peptide one GLP one or GIP, which is the glucose
dependent insulinotropic polypeptide. I know, it's a mouthful. GLP one

(03:01):
is a peptide that works on one channel in the body,
and GLP one in GIP GIP working on another channel
in the body. They seem to work together to create
some more benefits and positive results. The drugs on the
market that use GLP one only are things like ozempic
or wagov. And then there are drugs on the market

(03:23):
that use both GLP one and GIP. Those are the
drugs like zep bound or Manjaro. I know that sounds
really complicated, but just know the GLP ones are called
samaglatides and then the GLP one GIP those are called terzepetides.
And when talking to your doctor about which one of
these might be right for you in your program, it's

(03:44):
important to know that there is a difference. I guess
this is as good a time as any to say
I am not a doctor. The rest of this video
is intended for your information purposes only, not medical advice.
When it comes to understanding whether or not somemaglatide or
terzeptides should be a part of your program, you should
definitely be talking to your doctor. So I know some

(04:04):
of the jargon around peptides. How do they actually support
health and fitness or weight loss. Well, it turns out
that both the GLP one and the dual agonists GLP
one GIP they help with satiety signaling, that is how
full you feel when you eat. They help with delayed
gastric emptying, meaning that it helps your stomach hold onto
foods a little longer so that you're not hungry so

(04:27):
fast after you eat. Also helps with blood sugar stabilization,
so it keeps you from those spikes and drops, which
is why these drugs are also used in order to
treat diabetes. And lastly, they've been shown to improve insulin
sensitivity that's how well your body responds to carbohype regulation. Now,
I know that sounds like a lot, but in the

(04:47):
last twenty years of helping individuals lose weight to make
the most out of the body God's given them, I've
found that these are exactly the places that individuals need
the most support in order to continue to see positive
progress and results and to support their mindset on the
day to day basis doing good exercise and good nutrition. So,
as a coach, do I recommend these sort of things

(05:09):
to my clients. Again, like I said, I don't give
medical advice, but I have advised some of my clients
to talk to their doctor about using these peptides to
support their program. A cautionary note, though, these are not
first steps when it comes to being a good steward
of the body you've been given. It's important to note
that while these things can support healthy, powerful long term

(05:31):
weight loss in a body, and maybe even some good,
healthy changes in a body, there are some things that
we should be doing already before adding these to a
program to mitigate bad side effects, but also to see
long term progress that's healthy, not just a change on
the scale. So, if you're asking my coach's opinion, what

(05:52):
I would say is that these peptides are not good
for beginners. You should already be involved in an exercise
and nutrition program that is making you healthier every week
before involving these into your program, and I'll explain why.
So I'm about to describe three things that really matter
are a part of your habits and a part of
your program before you need to approach whether or not

(06:15):
peptides are right for you. And if you struggle in
any of these three areas, I'm going to encourage you
to check out our Better Daily Beginner Course. Our Better
Daily Beginner Course is a powerful program designed for beginners
to help their faith in fitness foundations. Is to help
you to understand where your exercise and nutrition practice fit
in to your spiritual practice. What does it mean to

(06:37):
walk with God and take good care of the body
He's given you. This course will help you with just that.
In ten powerful lessons we'll address exercise, will address nutrition,
will address fasting. We'll even address rest and time management.
And through these biblically based principles you can get a
huge jump on the three things I'm about to talk about.

(06:58):
There should be a link right there help you get
connected to the Better Daily Beginner series Faith and fitness foundations.
Make sure you build your house on a rock, not sand.
So the three things we need to have under wraps
before considering peptides as a part of our program. First,
we need to have a regular and consistent weight training practice. Yes,
you need to learn to lift weights before these peptides

(07:21):
are going to be powerful and helpful for you in
stewarding your health and fitness. Why is that these peptides
have been shown while they reduce weight very consistently among individuals,
they also reduce lean body mass. Now, weight training is
important because it tells our body that the lean muscle
mass we have is really important. And if we're going

(07:41):
to be taking a peptide that results in lean mass loss,
then a weight training regimen will actually help the signal
to the body to retain our lean mass, to keep
our muscle mass around, so we can stay functional and healthy.
While appreciating the beneficial effects of these peptides, it should
also be noted that and research that trzepetide sees less

(08:03):
lean mass loss than the samaglatide, so that's important to
consider as well. The second thing that we need to
get under wraps is high nutrient density eating. What's that mean, Well,
both of these peptide paths will result in less consumption.
You'll feel fuller longer, Sometimes you might wrestle with nausea.
A lot of times, you might not feel like eating

(08:24):
at all, and that's not necessarily a bad thing as
long as the food we eat has lots and lots
of nutrients to feed our metabolism. Just because we are
not hungry for something doesn't mean that our body doesn't
need nutrients from our food, and so while we're eating
less and less food, it makes the food we eat
paramountly important, and so we need to be focused on

(08:47):
eating things that are high in nutrient density, lots of polyphenols,
lots of vitamins and minerals, and when we do, we
eat those things, even though we can only eat so
much of them, those things to support our metabolism, to
support our health processes, to nourish our body while it's
getting good at burning fat as a fuel source. An
example of this might be Let's say I would like

(09:10):
a snack, and if I'm on a peptide, I don't
really want to eat much of a snack, but I
am going to eat a snack. The question is which
is better for me, peanut butter crackers or blueberries. The
answer is blueberries. Blueberries are a much more high nutrient
density food than peanut butter crackers. Peanut butter crackers have
some energy in them, maybe a little bit of protein,

(09:32):
but there's a lot of empty calories in peanut butter crackers,
whereas blueberries have lots of fiber, lots of nutrient density.
And that's going to help my metabolism and my body
with that little bit that I'm willing to eat. And finally,
the third thing that I need to be considering if
I'm going to add peptides to my program is whether
or not I'm consuming enough protein. Remember that lean body

(09:55):
mass loss is very significant in both the GLP one
and the GLP one on GIP peptides. In the primary
way that I can support my body and help it
to hold on to lean body mass is to consume
adequate grams of protein. Now, the clients that I've worked
with who have used ZEP bound Er Manjaro in their

(10:15):
program have reported that they really don't feel like eating
much at dinner time, or lunchtime, or even breakfast, and
so it's extremely important that they start with good protein,
something like eggs or chicken or fish, to make sure
that they're getting protein before they feel too full to
consume any more food. Again, this practice on a regular

(10:37):
basis will help individuals see very positive and beneficial results
from these peptides while mitigating some of those less desirable
results like lean muscle mass. So I can hear you saying, hey,
coach Alex, that was a lot. Here's a quick review.
If you're considering making peptides a part of your program
to see whether or not that would be beneficial for you,
it's very very important that you've already established these three

(10:59):
very powerful habits. It's one weight training consistency, two high
nutrient density eating and three adequate protein consumption daily. If
you have these habits down and you've been doing them
for at least twelve weeks, then introducing a peptide to
your program will one help you build on that foundation
and see accelerated results, but two, it will also keep

(11:21):
you from developing some bad habits that will see this
peptide hurting your health over time rather than helping you.
So now the big question should you add peptides to
your program? And if so, which peptide should you add?
So let's say right now you're doing everything right, You're like,
all right, coach, I'll pause. I'm going to build a
foundation of health and fitness first in my life before

(11:42):
trying to add these to my program to see the benefits,
and that would be awesome. The Better Daily Beginner series
Faith and Fitness Foundations knocking out all ten of those
things that you need to know to build a healthy
and powerful foundation to make the most of the body
God's given you. You've done all those things and you're like, okay,
now what well? I need you to talk to your
doctor because there's an important few decisions that need to

(12:05):
be made here and some negative effects that you should
know about before starting peptides into your program, So while
you're talking to your doctor, you should ask one, should
I be on a symaglatide or should I be on
a truzepetite. Samagnetides have been around a lot longer. They
seem to have less intense negative gastric effects, meaning less nausea,

(12:27):
less diarrhea, that sort of thing. However, they also seem
to have some of the increased incidents of more severe
effects like pancreatitis. Another negative on the symagnatide side is
increased muscle loss versus those turzepetites. On the other hand,
the turzepetites seem to have slightly more intense gastrointestinal issues

(12:47):
like nausea or diarrhea. Those would be considered minor side effects,
but in the research it also shows that if you
have a family history of thyroid disease like thyroid cancer,
or if you're currently being treated for something like hype
both thyroidism, it's really worth speaking to your doctor about
whether or not that pathway would increase your major and
negative side effects. At the end of the day, you,

(13:10):
your doctor, and your insurance will have to figure out
which one of those are the best fit for you.
When it comes to peptides, one size does not fit all.
It's so important that you have the support you need
to make a wise decision and to monitor the positive
benefits while mediating those negative side effects. So what now, Well,
by now, I hope you have all the information you

(13:31):
need to know where you need to start with regard
to adding peptides as a part of your health and
fitness program. To be a good steward of the body
God's given you, you might need to start at square
one by first adding good exercise and good nutrition practices
to your day to day before considering making peptides a
part of the process. Again, I would refer you to
our Better Daily Beginner series Faith in Fitness Foundations to

(13:54):
give you a strong and powerful starting point to be
able to add something like peptides to your practice. Or
you might be at the step where you need to
have a conversation with your doctor about whether or not
peptides are right for you given your medical history, and
which one of those peptide classes would be the most beneficial.
Whatever step you're on, I want to pray with you
about your decision to make peptides a part of your practice.

(14:18):
So bow your head and repeat after me. Father God,
thank you so much for this body you've given me.
I want to learn how to be a good steward
of it. I need you to teach me how to
make the most of the body you've given me. Lord,
Please teach me on a daily basis to exercise well

(14:42):
and defeed myself well. And that's not an easy process
and I've struggled with it in the past. And Lord,
I pray that if peptides need to be a part
of my program, that you'll give me wisdom, clarity and peace.
I pray that what I do with my body glorifies you.
