My “overreaction” to #Wembys opening night performance. Where he can go from here, how awful AD looked and the underwhelming performance of a 10 and 10 for #1 pick cooper flagg. And a few shout outs to the #SpursNation that invaded the #AAC and to my friend Steven Duarte. All this and more on #FPS. #GoSpursGo

Speaker 1 (00:00):
I can't stop the gout down your body body. Don't
you detail the weak? Come down down and don't to me.
He must be in a feed to take them. Be
into mine, this my wall like the well fun it

(00:28):
and then come in. No body his woking away. Didn't
do that. Don't do him and you won't baby water
my ever wanted you did it. Don't stop, get down,
stop me state man. I feel like a states.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Me.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
I think he's the best player in the league, so
I mean I expect that from him.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
I guess your dad and driveway when you're.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Here, what do you do?

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Great?

Speaker 2 (01:32):
And I'm back Fan Poll Sports the true tech sports
podcast for the true tech sports fan. Once again, this
is your host, Ronnie Langford, back at it here at
home under the peace and quiet, while everybody is settled.
And finally my heart rate has come down somewhat after

(01:54):
watching what many believe may be one of the great
greatest opening nights of all time, not just in Spurs history. Man,
I tell you.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
What you know.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
I watched that game and I sat there in awe
like everyone else that was watching the show that Victor
Winbanyama put on in the Metroplex against the hated formerly
known as the Fighting Mark Cubans Dallas Mavericks. And I

(02:38):
tell you what, we talked about that football team up
there not having no d and we call them the
Alice Cowboys, We might as well go ahead and call
these guys the Alice Mavericks because no matter what defense
they tried to throw out there, they could do nothing

(03:00):
and I mean nothing to slow down that train that
was on those tracks last night. As Victor Winn Banyama
went off forty fifteen three no turnovers, my goodness was

(03:22):
that of performance. The Spurs as a whole played very
well last night. Stefan Castle had a good game. Devin
Vessel had a good game. Caldon Johnson played well. Cornett
had some foul trouble, but I think he got it
together better in the second half. And he didn't have
any big numbers, but he contributed in a variety of
ways with the rebounding, with the picks, with the little

(03:45):
things that we are expecting from him, and the foul
trouble that'll get cleaned up, and then offensively he'll be
able to do a few things to help continue to.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Spread that floor.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Dylan Harper had a rough start didn't look comfortable at
the beginning, went off in the second half, ended up
with fifteen points and a handful of assists. Like I said, man,
this team is going to be fun to watch. I
haven't had this much fun watching his Spurs team since
probably I guess twenty seventeen, before the Kawhi drama all started.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
That team was pretty entertaining. But this one man that.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
I don't even know what words to use to describe
what I saw last night, because Victor put on an
absolute show. And I told I told my friends when
we found out that he had been working with some
of the all time greats. I told some of my friends,

(04:52):
if he starts to learn how to be aggressive, and
he learns how to truly finish around the basket, the
league is in trouble. And when I saw that he
was working with one of the all time greats, and

(05:13):
you can put him as an individual, his stats, his championships,
his awards, you can put them up there with any
of the great big men, and Hakeem Olajuwan can stand
on his own. Why why anybody in the Houston area

(05:37):
would allow the Dream to team up with the Alien
and teach him some of his low post moves and
teach him how to take advantage of certain mismatches, certain defenses.
How you could allow that to happen blows my mind,

(06:00):
because if there's any player that I would not have
allowed to work with dream it would have been that guy.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
I know, Dreams worked with a lot of guys.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
He did a tremendous good job with other other veterans,
other other players from the past. Uh and and a
lot of the guys that still play today have worked
with him. I heard that knucklehead Gilbert Arenaz talk about,
you know, oh, his game doesn't translate. He you know,
his his stuff has passed it by. That's not that's

(06:30):
not part of today's game anymore. You know, you can't
do stuff like the Dream shake anymore. Shut up, Shut up.
You're nothing but a hater, all right, You're not even
You're not even one of the modern guys that like
stay hate on guys.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
You're just a hater.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
What Victor Wimbanyama has put together, what he did in
the preseason, and what he did last night on national
television for the entire world to see. Welcome to ESPN.
Former T and T crew Ernie Kenny, Charles Shaq, You're
welcome for that. You're welcome because you got to see it.

(07:09):
You got to see it up close and personal. What
this league is about to become and who is about
to become the face of the league again, Shaq is
a hater talking about Bull Bowl again, talking about Kevin Durant.
I'm sorry, and I'm not trying to disrespect KD. KD
has been a tremendous player in this league for.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
A long time.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
That guy last night is better than KD because he
does it on both ends of the court. KD has
never done it on both ends of the court consistently.
Where you thought, Okay, he's gonna control this game on
the defensive side, and now he's gonna control this game
on the offensive side. What you saw last night is

(07:55):
the birth the next evolution of basketball in the world.
I can't even imagine what the numbers were across the pond,
so to speak. I can't even imagine what Paris and
France as a country, how excited they were watching that

(08:15):
guy put on that performance.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Because all you have to do is look back.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
To the Olympics last year to see how passionate they
are about basketball and how passionate. They are about Victor
women Yama. So this is exciting on so many levels.
It's not even funny. But just like the opening song

(08:40):
that I used today, this was Victor's way of saying,
let's get it started. And there's a line in this
song that says, your DJ is weak. Okay, He's telling
all of you suckers out there in the NBA st
atosphere he's coming and you better not come weak.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
I posted it last night.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Ad has been regarded as one of the best big
men defensively for a long time, and I'll give him
his props.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
I'll give him his credit.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
He's had moments and times where he was one of
the best defensive big men in the league.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
But he's not that anymore.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
And this fake tough guy act that he loves to
throw around, and the way he reacted when Corneck foiled
him last night, man that that wasn't even a stop play.
About fifteen years ago, that was a ball out of bounds,
the fouls called, and you went on about your business.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
There was no we have to review for a coming fellow.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Flick shut up because you started whining and bitching and
moaning and showing off the bitch asseness that you are.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
We had to wait, you know, to see if that
foul was gonna change, and they did.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
They upgraded it because of the motion. Dude, he's trying
to block the shot. Of course he's gonna come down.
Of course he's gonna follow through. What is he supposed
to do there? He's behind him. That's the stupidest thing.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
I hate the.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
NBA for the way that they've changed things, and they've
made this so soft.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
But you see, when you make it soft and you
take away the physicality, you allow guys such as Victor
Wambanyama to develop a game like we've never seen before.
The guy was on attack mode all night long.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Look, I know what Jordan was, I know what Magic was,
I know what Iverson was.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Lebron d Wade cod Like, I get it, Okay, KD Right,
I get it. But very few of any of those
guys that I just mentioned affected both sides of the
court like this guy did last night, And like this
guy's gonna do this year and possibly for years to come,

(11:13):
and if he can stay healthy and he can stay
hungry and.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
He can do what he's doing the way that he's
doing it. After one game. This guy's the limit.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
I'm not gonna sit here and pretend they're gonna go
to eighty two and oh, although hashtag eighty two and
O is probably gonna start here pretty soon. I'm not
gonna sit here and say they're gonna make you know,
the finals, that they're gonna win the champion.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
I'm not saying any of that.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
I'm just saying he's gonna have a chance to put
it all together, and he's gonna give himself a chance
to grow into being the absolute best.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Player in the world.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
And he can make that claim pretty quick if we're
not careful. Because that's how special last night's performance was.
When you come to the game and you see how
it's changed and how it's not this you know, slow
it down and run into everybody and knock each other

(12:15):
around type of physicality like it used to be, then
you begin.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
To see other players start to grow, start to do things.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Stefan Castle, the reigning defending undisputed Rookie of the Year,
was absolutely fantastic last night, playing second, second option.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
To Victor. He was controlling that offense. He played great minutes.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
I think, I mean, there's still some growth, there's still
some things he's gotta do, which, by the way, one
of the things you need to do is get in
the gym and make your damn free throws. You're a
guard that can attack the ring. You're gonna get to
the line, or you should get to the line at
least five times a game, so that.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
Means ten free throws.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
That means you need to be hitting eighty to ninety percent,
and then the defense can adjustin figure out.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
Okay, what are we gonna do. Are we gonna back
off of him and let him score? Or are we
gonna foul him and try to keep him out of
the pain, And then you've got him on a yo
yo and you can do whatever you want.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
That's what needs to happen defensively. He took the lock,
he slapped it onto Cooper Flag. He threw away the key,
and that bitch is floating somewhere down the Trinity River
or whatever they're in there in Dallas because the rookie.
The rookie looked like a rookie last night. Okay, I'm

(13:47):
not trying to take anything away from Cooper Flag. I
think he has potential to be a star. I think
he's gonna do great things in this league. But on
Night one in his debut, he looked anything but ready.
And a lot of people have said it. A lot
of people said it today, Jason Kidd is making a

(14:09):
mistake trying to turn that kid into a point forward
because he cannot handle pressure. In the NBA, he did
some of this as duke, and I think that's where
that came from. But he can't handle the type of
pressure he's gonna see. And just think about it. Carter
Bryant wasn't in the game very much last night, and
Carter Bryant didn't get to get into his.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Jersey like he did in the Summer League.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
And y'all remember what happened in Summer League when Carter
Bryant decided to put him in lockdown mode, got him
to the point where he couldn't do anything. And the
same thing happened last night with Stefan Castle. And because
he couldn't get into a flow by bringing the ball up,
when he started to try to do other things to
try to get some easy shots, those things went away quickly.

(14:57):
Why because there was an alien hovering around waiting to
send that shit back to sender. And you can see
it go to the highlights, go back and watch the game.
There were three or four opportunities for him in the
post against a smaller defender to try to get buckets,
and he shied away from it because Wenby was lurking.

(15:22):
The only way you're gonna ever be able to overcome
that is by going at Wenby chest to chest and
trying to get.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
It scored on him.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
And as long as Cooper shows the willingness to not
do that, and as long as he's I don't want
to say scared, but as long as he's passive, it.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
Ain't gonna work. It ain't gonna work. So I know
it's one game.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
He's got eighty one more games to go, you know,
hopefully things start to change for him or whatever. Hopefully not,
because I'd love to see Dylan Harper win Rookie of
the Year if he plays as well down the stretch
for through through games as he did last night. But
I mean, this kid we were told in high school

(16:11):
was NBA ready. We were told when he was playing
with USA Basketball a few years and he dunked on
ad and he went coast to coast onn Lebron that
this kid was NBA ready.

Speaker 1 (16:23):
Last night proved otherwise. Last night proved he's not there yet.
Is he a good player, yes, does he have potential yes?

Speaker 2 (16:33):
Could he do some great things this season ended in
his career, most definitely, But this early part of the season,
this kid's gonna struggle. He's not gonna see the type
of defense he saw.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Last night, night in and night out.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
Let's not kid ourselves, okay, but the fact that the
Spurs were able to go into that defensive mode and
attack him the way that they did.

Speaker 1 (16:59):
That should tell the Mavericks, Hey, we need to get
this kid off the ball.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
We need to let him move, We need to let him,
give get some advantages in the post, in the mid range,
get him a chance to get comfortable so his offensive
game can settle in, because he's gonna end up pressing,
and when he presses, it's gonna cause him to shoot poorly,
and it's gonna cause all kinds of negative numbers. He

(17:22):
shot thirty one percent from the field last night. He
had ten points and ten rebounds. Oh, you're the double double.
He's the first rookie and blah blah blah years to have.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
A double double.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
How many damn shots did he take to get that. Okay,
I think I think he was like five or seventeen
or something like that, or maybe maybe four of seventeen,
and then he had a couple of free throws. Either way,
double doubles don't mean anything when you're having to shoot
that many shots and not make them.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
Double doubles don't mean.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Anything if it's not contributing to keeping your team in
the game and get giving yourself a chance to win.
So don't don't sit there and try to pump him up.
Don't sit there and try to make him to be
all world just yet, because he's not. And speaking of which,
all you pumpers, okay, don't think for one second. Don't

(18:20):
think for one second.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
That I don't have receipts.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
That I don't have access to some of the bullshit
you guys were talking Three summers ago, when Wendy made
his debut in Las Vegas, coming off with a long
season in France, playing for a championship there, flying across
the world to get to the NBA draft, flying to

(18:48):
San Antonio, then flying to Vegas, all within about eight days.
And then he goes out and he gets Kai Jones
to dunk on him, and he ends up with like
a points and you know, nine assists and five blocks,
and everybody's like, this guy's a bus this guy.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Sucks, he's overrated, he's this, he's that, blah blah blah.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
And you talked all that shit about this nineteen year
old kid that played one summer league game, a game
that didn't really matter, didn't mean nothing.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
And y'all talked all that shit.

Speaker 2 (19:28):
And now look the development, the mentality, the patience, the hunger,
the passion, everything that people talked about when they talked
about this kid three years ago is starting to develop
and evolve into what you saw last night. And again,

(19:48):
if you think for one second that last night was special,
just wait, just wait. That first home game, I believe
is tomorrow night, and if you have tickets to that game,
be excited about it. I know the Jackals are gonna
be going crazy and in his section, his little group
that he's put together, and I hope that thing takes

(20:11):
off like it needs to.

Speaker 3 (20:13):
I know, the.

Speaker 2 (20:13):
Baseline bums are gonna do their things. They're gonna be loud,
they're gonna be proud. They've been Spurs loyalist for decades,
not years, decades, and those people are gonna show up
and they're gonna make all the noise that needs to
be made, and they're gonna handle their business. So I'm
not saying I'm not predicting anything. I'm not saying he's

(20:34):
gonna go off for fifty nothing like that. I'm just
saying this is gonna be his first home game since
maybe late January, early February. So I can only imagine
how pumped up this guy's going to be to be
in front of that San Antonio crowd and what he's

(20:56):
going to be willing to do, because let me tell you, man,
that kid is not a kid anymore. He spent the
time with the Monks. Shout out to the monks that
triggered whatever in his brain. Shout out to a strength
and conditioning team who've got him stronger, who've helped him

(21:20):
to develop his body. But keep that same slim, quick
frame of his Shout out to the former players that
have worked with him. I'm sure he worked with the Spurs.
I'm not gonna say that he wasn't working with the Spurs,
but he worked with KG, he worked with a King.

Speaker 1 (21:39):
He's worked with.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
Various people, and you saw last night what he is.
I started this podcast three years ago and my first
episode was about this kid and he was coming and
I told y'all, then, pump the brakes. Don't think that
he's gonna be all everything the second he stepped on
the court.

Speaker 3 (22:00):
And I was right.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
And I'm not trying to make this out to be well,
I was right.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
No, I'm saying that because it was going to take
time for him to get to this point and be
this good.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
And it's only the tip of the iceberg.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
If he can continue to go out there, create easy
shots for himself, get other people involved, anchor that defense
to be basically a shut down, lockdown type of defense,
this league is going to have problems.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
Oklahoma City is still the best team in the league.

Speaker 2 (22:36):
Right then, You've got various teams in the West. You
got Joker out there in Denver, you got Luca in
La You know, I don't know exactly what you have
with the Clippers, but you've got something out there. Okay,
You've got Houston. You know, Houston's got all kinds of
guys that might be able to make some big noise
this year. Okay, so the West is loaded. The West

(23:00):
is gonna be something wild. And I didn't even talk
about Golden State. Okay, but it's gonna be crazy. But
if this guy is gonna play this way and lead
this team like he did last night, those guys better
pay attention because he's making his way down the road.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
He talked about how much he missed playing.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
He talked about how it's frustrating because he couldn't do
what he loved to do, which is play basketball.

Speaker 1 (23:28):
And he proved that last night. And I mean shit,
even Steven A.

Speaker 2 (23:34):
Smith, Monica mcwa, you know, Jay Will, and some other
guy on First Take this morning were talking about him
and the play of the Spurs for like seven minutes
of a segment. When was the last time ESPN spent
seven minutes on any other team than the Lakers? And

(23:55):
more importantly, how long has it been since they spent
that type of time talking about the Spurs.

Speaker 1 (24:01):
Okay, I'm excited. I don't know if you can tell
him my voice or not. I'm pumped. I'm all in,
you know.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
I I'll watch every game that I can and and
I'll try to get to some games this year, and
whatever whatever it takes, my Spurs fandom will be front
and center like it hasn't been in a while. Okay,
Coach Johnson s s you know just I mean, he
he did excellent last night. If we're gonna grade these

(24:30):
players and and how they did, then you know what,
let's let's go ahead and grade Coach Johnson and his staff.
Those guys put together an A plus game plan and
he went out.

Speaker 1 (24:42):
There and he went out to get that win, that.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
First win under his belt, and he took care of
business as the official head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
So shout out to Coach Johnson and his staff. Tremendous,
tremendous effort. That was awesome. Last thing I gotta say
is shout out.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
Shout out to Mark Burnett, who I follow on Facebook,
who's a humongous Spurs fan who lives up in the
Dallas area. Shout out to him. Shout out to the
guys that he went to the game with last night.
Shout out to the other Spurs fans up in the
DFW area. My good friend, my longtime friend, Steven Duarte

(25:26):
getting after it, showing off his Spurs gear. I know
you probably wore that around town, because you know he
would do that. I just know he would Shout out
to Steve for holding it down for the two one
to zero.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
Man, the people in that.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
Building that were repping the Spurs did a tremendous job
of letting that national TV audience know we're in the building, baby,
Okay that when VP chant that started and just continue.

Speaker 1 (25:56):
To grow all throughout the game was awesome. And the
best part about that.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
The last time I saw a crowd leaving an arena
or a stadium like they were doing last night early
in that fourth quarter was a few weeks ago in
Dallas when that sorry ass team from north of the
Red River was getting their ass kicked in the fourth
quarter and those people jumped in their damn mobile homes

(26:23):
and screwed it back up.

Speaker 1 (26:25):
I thirty five.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
So to see that happen in Dallas again, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome.

Speaker 1 (26:36):
You guys up there, you held it down. It was
great to see it. It was awesome to see it.
I'm so glad that you guys had to take a
chance to experience that and be a part of that.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
Steve. I'm telling you, man, this could be the year
I come make that trip up there to come visit
and get.

Speaker 1 (26:51):
To a game with you. I think that would be awesome.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
I don't know if they could handle the West side,
and I said, we get up there together, but we'll see.
I'm willing to take the chance of you who are
my friend. So again, tremendous job repping the Silver and
Black way to go, my friend. But again excited. I
can't even put any more words to it. I'm excited.
I can't wait. Let's get after it. Eighty two and

(27:14):
Oh Baby, you gotta get the first one, to get
the second and then to move on from there.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
So here we go.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
The campaign campaign for eighty two and Oh began last
night in Dallas and it carries on tomorrow night in
San Antonio, and I cannot wait.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
Whoo, that's all. I'm outful. I tell you what.

Speaker 2 (27:31):
Fan Pool Sports a true tech sports podcast for the
true tex sports fan.

Speaker 1 (27:35):
Once again, this has been Ronnie and I'm out go
Spurs Go peace. I like to move moment. I like
top Movic moment.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
You like to.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
Like top moment moving. I like top moment moment, like
moment moving. Yeah, Like I was like top bocket hopping up.
I was like the bollet hopping.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
