It never bothered Je’Niece McCullough that she was Bernie Mac’s daughter. What was difficult was dealing with people who reduced her to just being his daughter; that she had nothing to offer on her own. She shares with Jeanne how she spent years at war with herself, knowing she had gifts but never thinking they were enough; how she finally broke free and was able to honor her dad’s legacy in her own way; what wisdom he ingrained in her that has helped sustain her; why flexibility is key to surviving whatever life hands you; and why she’s not afraid to admit she sees a therapist.

About Je’Niece

Je’Niece is the only child of the late comedy legend Bernie Mac. She holds a B.S. in Psychology and an M.A. in Mental Health Counseling. After working several years in social services, she became her father’s assistant and continued in that role until his death in 2008. She then took over as vice president of The Bernie Mac Foundation where she discovered her talent for public speaking. She has been a featured speaker for several events, including The Black Women’s Expo, Heart & Soul Women of Excellence Awards, and Everest College’s 2012 Commencement Program. While she no longer has an executive position within the foundation, Je’Niece continues to speak regularly on issues such as women’s empowerment, Sarcoidosis awareness, and overcoming depression. She is also a published author and has been featured in several publications, including Today’s Black Chicago Woman and Ebony magazine, as well as several collaboration books. She currently writes for Medium.com and recently launched a podcast honoring her father’s legacy called “Bernie’s Daughter.”
