Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to this week of filling and thank you for
joining us in our mission to support people with developmental
disabilities for filling homes. I'm Tina Parsons. Welcome back to
the program today. I am talking with Brenda Garber's dsp
at Filling Homes.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Hi.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Brenda, Hi, thanks so much for talking with me. You're welcome.
You were able to spend Christmas Day with the residents.
Thank you, first of all so much for working that day.
I know that takes time away from your family, but
they're blessed to have you here. So tell us what
Christmas looked like.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, you know, they had a Christmas meal that day.
They had ham and sweet potatoes and green beans and
you know the fixings like that. We opened presents in
the morning and it was so much fun to get
them started. And we take their hand and they pull
out paper or like open the gift, and we just
(00:56):
help them. And just as he's seeing the smiles on
their face because we're helping them do that and to
open the presence, and their eyes just light up just
opening their presence and when they see what they got new,
it's like like Christmas at your house.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Well, thanks again for spending Christmas Day with that. Explain
to the people listening what a day at work as
a DSPs.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Well, we started at six o'clock in the morning. We
have a caseload and like two or three people. Each
person has and give them showers, We get them dressed
and into the wheelchair. The nurses give them their meds
and then we go dining with them and then we
bring them back. Then they get ready for Some of
them go to work, which is called have here, and
(01:46):
some of them don't have to do that when we
can have arts and crafts or other recreation things to do.
Sometimes they bowl in the atrium, just different things that
we do with them. At times we just take them
for walks and we play music with them, just spend
time again. Yeah, we just yeah, it's fun.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Yeah, it's fun to do that. Describe what's like the
relationship that you have with your coworkers.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
It's like a family because if you're busy with one
person and they see that you're in there a long time.
We all work so well together and we pick on
each other like we're family. You know. It's like it's
so much fun.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Brenda, do you feel like you get the training that
you need here at filling Hobbs. Yes we get.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
I mean the supervisors and other of our staff work
with a new person. They're not just thrown into it,
because we care enough for the resident and the new
employee that we will help them along the way and
show them what needs to be done with It's like
you got to learn each person individually. They all have
(02:55):
their different likes and non likes.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
You'd set a little bit ago about out the residents.
You care enough about the residents and the new coworker.
Let's talk about the residents. Okay, you love them. You
can tell the smile you have on your face through
the halls. Do you have a special memory.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
I got a lot of them, but the main one
is like this summer in August, I got to take
one of them, one of the residents, to see the
Brett Michaels concert at the Fulton County Fair, and the
smile on his face was just priceless.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
You know, people often say that you have to have
a lot of patience to do a job like this,
or how hard a job like this must be. But
that's what you have on your heart exactly, and you
can tell that this is something that's in your heart,
and you have a love for the residents. I do.
I'm just going to reference our core values really quick
because I see all of these values in you. And
first one, treat all with respect as coworkers. You guys
(03:49):
work together, you respect each other right, and then act
with integrity, Serve as a faithful steward, strive for excellence.
Those are all things that I see in you, and
then that helps all the other staff and when they
see it. So thank you for everything that you do. Welcome.
One thing that I want that I hope people understand
about filling homes is it's more of a relationship with
(04:11):
their residents. It's not just a job. Do you agree
with that?
Speaker 2 (04:15):
I do agree with that because I love to see
them smile.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
It's exciting to come to work. I get excited when
I get to come to work because I know I
get to see my friends. It's a great day when
you can see them exactly.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I mean, I enjoy coming to work every day. I'm
sixty two years old and going to be sixty three,
and I love coming to work every day.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Good. I love to hear that. Yeah, well, thank you
so much for joining me. If anybody listening, would like
more information on filling homes. You can follow us on
Facebook or check on our website. Thanks again for tuning
in and have a great week.
