Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello and welcome to First Issues now, the weekly show
posted daily ish about only the newest first issues released
by insert comic company. Here this week, I'll be looking
at the comics released for the week of July thirtieth,
twenty twenty five. Are you ready for this jelly? I
don't think you're ready for this jelly.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
My body's so buddhash. Just tun down.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Listen to Blinking fifteen minutes now to hear me and
Sam talk about Now that's what I call music Part
one and two and three.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
We are gonna do a lot of parts to it.
It is too fun.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
This is true. I do enjoy it. Hi. Oh, I'm
Sam ROSSI the casual comic Kiss. Comic Kiss. That is
such a fuck up work.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
It's not a real word.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Thank you for the comic. Thank you for the comic arts,
our ivs, You're welcome. Thank you to the comic Archive
is for allowing me this spot list of first issues
for the week of July thirtieth, twenty twenty five. It's
my second pick of the week, and I picked speed
Racer number one. I remember watching the original cartoon Esik
Pack as a kid, and I called before age had

(01:11):
a chance to look at the list.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
I don't know. You almost called Gozilla visus Boston.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
This is true, it was. It was a toss up.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
I'll be honest.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
But my love of speed racer or the nostalgia speed
racer one out over. You know, Godzilla taking on Boston.
Now onto the artist of this wonderful book, writer Dave
proposa artist Davide Tinto, colorist Rex Lexus Locus, how could work?

(01:39):
And letterer because we believe that letters letterers are artists.
Buddy Bodine bodein.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Well it's spelled Bodine.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
The plot we opened ten years in the past to
Rex Racer winning the Formula X series. Rex is telling
his younger brother Speed, but how do you win in
the Formula X league since there really are no rules?
Fast forward to the noun we're spreeze free.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Swee, what about speed?

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Fast forward to the noun where Speed is getting ready
to street race in the Mock five, his brother's old car.
I love the Mock five and it's a little gadgets.
Oh dude, it's totally awesome in this comic. Fast forward
to the end of the race, Speed and pops out
fight We meet Tricksy and get introduced to the c
a t racing team or cat. They had tigers on

(02:32):
the side of their on the side of their cars.
They're just a big bunch of That's the basic of
this book.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
But what about Pop's heart attack?

Speaker 2 (02:44):
I didn't want to give any spoilers, all right, I'll
be honest. If I saw either of these covers, I
would buy the books just based on the amazing artworks
on those covers.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
Really, No, it's true, it's great cover.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
The art does have the same vibe as the cartoon.
Where to me, it fell thinking back to the cartoon,
we had speed in the car, then we're talking to Pops.
Then we're in the car, but we're not doing it.
We're back and forth between it kind of like on
a comic book.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Okay, I think that also helps us speed Racer head
like three frames per second in animation.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
I know the story has me hooked with the plot
so far, I want to know more. I already know
who race or excess or should be. Let's a phrase
that should be based on the cartoon, but that could
change depending on the plot. But so far they've kept major, major,

(03:44):
no key points of the original show. Okay, Okay, you
know if they keep the original backstories, Razor Acts should be.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
You can say it though.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
They are saying Rex died in a fiery I appreciate it.
It's previously done in the cartoon.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Also, yeah, he's always dead. But I'll let you finish
off yours and then we can have a little discussion.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
E bit.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Okay, this leads me to buy collect it. Whatever you do.
The artwork is worth the price of the book alone.
I like art. And that's the thing is that I would.
I would, you know, I can go deliver, I can
give or take the freaking words.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
I actually, I actually think you're kind of right here.
But I also think that the words it's a really
good script.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
To me, it's a great script.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I want to read more.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Something I always love about his adaptations, be it this
or Captain Planet or you know, Space Ghost, is he keeps,
he keeps the framework he like. I will be ninety
nine percent sure that Rex is going to be Razor Acts.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Right, because that is what the previous the lord.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, and one I would like to state this. He
made me like the fucking monkey again. Here here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Kid, why you have a bat monkey?

Speaker 1 (05:11):
But in everything he freaking writes, guess what he makes
me like the monkey. I didn't like Glip in fucking
space ghost. Okay, I didn't care about Mati's monkeys or
monkey or whatever.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
The I can't remember the name of the monkey. Okay.
The dude is four for four with monkeys. Man, Well,
that's awesome. It's not I don't want to like the monkeys.
Stop being good. I'm kidding.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
But anyways, but when it comes to the writing, I think,
like I was saying, he usually keeps the framework and
then changes it or it's it's almost like when Black
Sails the pirate show is being made. That is essentially
them taking Treasure Island and then running with it.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Right.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
I cannot remember the name of the showrunner, but he
pretty much goes, look I read, I read Treasure Island
once whatever stuck with me, that was the important things
to keep yep.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
And I think that's actually.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
What like it feels reading Dave Popos whenever he does
these where it's like, hey, what is actually what is
it that sticks? Racer X will be rex Ye again together,
Trixie and Speed are an item. The dead is always
kind of a dick, but I mean he was less
dickish in the cartoon for obvious reasons.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Yeah, but he was still kind of dickish. He was
he was cartoon dead in the seventies, dick Yeah, you know.
But it was a matter of you know, if you
know speed Racer, you generally know what's happening.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
However, the secondary part of what I'd like to say
is that knowing the destination, especially in comic books, does
doesn't matter.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Right.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
What matters is the journey, right. It's why I always
hate when some writers will be like, we need to
have a twist, and it's like, no, if all the
fans know this is where you're building to and they're
excited for it, do it. Speed being a cocky little boy,
you know who's like, you know, screw your rules, I'm.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Gonna revel without a causing it.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
Yeah, it's it's amped up to be a modern reflection
of what it was kind of in the seventies, you know,
where it's like, oh no, I must do this father, haha.
But it is a matter of you know what's gonna happen,
you want to see it happen, and there will be
small twists like again I will spoil it. The Cat

(07:46):
Team they come in and they beat the hell out
of Pops yep.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
And he has a heart attack during it. Yep. So
then you know the big thing is, no, we have
to go fast because it's about family.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Yeah, I can see that.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
It reminds me of at the end of Get Richard,
Die Try and fuck the ambulance.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Y know, I really did have it.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
I know that's why they I get that, and also
fucking ambulance costs. But it's one of those things where
I think it works really well, not necessarily as a standalone,
but I do agree with you.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
Is that to me? It definitely at the.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
Very least deserves me on a poll list. Oh yeah,
because it isn't again it is another day for the
post story, so you need so it is really entertaining
to read.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
I have to be honest, I am going. I've already
put I put in my order for the book.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
That's cool. Which coverage you.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Go for it's a random cover.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Oh, it's a random cover.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Yeah, I'm gonna be surprised, kind of like when you
go you know, you get the first issue, you know,
monthly sort of thing where you get it and you're like,
I don't know what I'm getting but I want it.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
And I will say on the art, I kind of
get what you mean.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
It does take the original art style, but then modern
I modernizes it, bumps.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
It up to an eleven.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
Yeah, and I will say I love ninety five percent
of it. But there is just I think, and I
think this is just by the sheer weight of we're
making a comic about driving, right, you know what I mean,
where there's a lot that's great, But at the same
time it's almost key frames versus.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
I never got the feeling they were going fast in this.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
No, not really, I'll be honest. The speed lines were
not speedy enough.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
I don't even think. I don't know what it was like.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
It didn't have enough blur.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
I think that might be it is that it is crisp.
The line work is crisp. I love it. It looks
great and it looks like.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
You took a picture and then put it into the book,
not like it was happening. Yeah, like, not like it
was three D, just happened sort of thing where you
can see, you know.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
And I think that that's a personal tasting. I think
for me, I would like slightly more almost I want
to say sketchy but I don't think that's the right
word I.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
Want to use.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
No, no, no, it's not.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
But I like looser lines when going fast or something
like that. But I think that could be because it's
based off of you.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
Know, an anime, mango, whatever you want to call it, where.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
I've seen a lot of different ways to denote speed
in comics, so that I'm just being a backseat editor
going hey, why don't.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
You know do this slightly more? It's sort of a.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
But yeah. Otherwise, I agree, it's a collector.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
It is.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
It's a collective and I can I believe how much
comic book costs.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Now, Hey, that's why I keep buying you trades instead
of single issues.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Oh, I understand, but I want to be I want
this one.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
So final thoughts.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Final thoughts is get it, read it, enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
And you heard it first here And by first I
mean I think this comes out the day before the
new comic book day. So yeah, so you heard it
last here.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
I'm Sam ROSSI it's the casual comics.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
But maybe I'm wrong. Let me know what your thoughts
of this issue or even if I missed an issue
over on Facebook at the Comic Archivist on Twitter at
AGC underscore does it all, or Blue Sky at AJAC
does it all without any Underscore. Don't forget to like, share, follow,
and do all the other stuff that I'm being told
is important to continue doing these shows, and more than
