continue to grow the channel. Today's guest on the show
is somebody that I've known for quite some time, man,
even when he was a little kid running around on
the practice field at ce Byrd High School. Man, and
now he is playing some big time college football at TCU.
I'm talking about offensive linemen, mister Carson Bruno. Carson Man,

(00:48):
Thank you so much for hopping on man.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
How you doing, Yes, sir, doing good. Appreciate y'all for having.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Me, no doubt about it.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Just for starters, Let's talk about your journey through football.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
You played in our alma mater, the greatest school high
school in the world see Bird High School. Man you
played there, you go on to Louisiana Tech, and now
you end up there at TCU. Just talk about a
little bit of your journey and some of your your
favorite steps that took you along the way there.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
Yeah, so out of high school, didn't have too many offers,
but had Louisiana Tech, which was close to home, only
an hour away. So went ahead and took that opportunity.
Got to play there early, my red shirt freshman sophomore year,
got to play start twenty four or yeah, twenty four games,
and then, uh, you know, decided that it was time

(01:40):
to enter the portal and try and find bigger, better opportunities.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Did that and TCU was first to come and they,
you know.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
Showed the most love, and I wanted to go and
take the most.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Advantage of that opportunity, and I did that.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
And so now I'm here at TCU and we're doing
We're doing good.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Now.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
I know that.

Speaker 5 (02:00):
You know, I was looking at some other people from
you know, have the college stories, and they talked about
they didn't want to go too far from home, you know,
being from street Port, and I think TCU was out
there in Dallas.

Speaker 6 (02:08):
Did that play a big part of it? That you
didn't want to be too.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
Far from home. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Absolutely, this was the biggest, like one of the biggest
schools that was the closest to my home. Still only
three and a half hours away here, so this was
the closest place I could go.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
So it worked out perfect.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Talk about some of your biggest influences on the football field, man,
Obviously your props played back in the day and everything.
Who were some other people if you know that helped
influence you to being the type of football player that
you are.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yeah, like you said my dad, I would also say
my mom. She was a collegiate basketball player. So just
really trying to make both of them proud, and you know,
it's difficult to do that when you got too collegian parents,
So really pushing myself to do the best I can
and make them proud.

Speaker 6 (02:57):
I hitting the transfer port it wasn't always easy.

Speaker 5 (03:00):
But when you get to TCU coming from Louisiana Tech,
what were some of the challenges that you had to
put into yourself to get to where you are and
be that guy out there for the for the horn.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
Frogs out Yeah, you know, coming in, I know I'm
going to a bigger program and I'm coming from a
smaller program, so I know how everybody kind of looks
at you, and so I just went in there with
the dog mindset of it doesn't matter where I'm at.
I'm a good player, and I'm coming here to show
these people the same thing. So when I got here,
you know, I just came in with that mindset that

(03:29):
I am who I am, and they got me here
for a reason. So just came in there with that
mindset that I'm here for a reason.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
You played a D line back in high school, right, yes, sir? Yeah? Man, Like,
how how was that transitioning?

Speaker 1 (03:44):
You know, obviously there are similar aspects of O line
and D line. How was it transferring over to the
offensive side of the ball for you once you get
to college.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (03:54):
My, when I first got to college, I had those
meetings were so rough, Like I was in like Spanish class,
Like I didn't know, I didn't understand anything that anybody
was talking about, like at all.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
It was.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
It was rough for a while, But once I got
the mental aspect down, the physical part just came with it.
You know. Obviously I wasn't used to doing that either,
but you know, the physical part came with it. Once
I got the mental down, it was smooth. But at
first it was pretty rough, but we did it didn't
take too long.

Speaker 6 (04:24):
Hey, that's a good apperience and talking about Spanish class.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
I wasn't understanding nothing in there for like a good bit.

Speaker 6 (04:35):
But going in there when you got the TCU, was
there anybody that took you under their wing to show
you the way how they do things over there?

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Not necessarily, Uh, but we didn't have too many older
guys in the in the old line room, so it
was just kind of like going off my own experience
and uh, you know, making making away from myself. Obviously
were people who guided me that weren't a lineman, but
from an O line perspective, it was just kind of

(05:07):
gotten my way through myself through.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
With you being a senior there.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Now, man, what's that culture like in the TCU offensive
line room. You're you're the standard in there. What are
you preaching to the guys in that offensive line room?

Speaker 4 (05:20):
Yeah, we got a lot of older guys in our
in our lining room right now, so it's been super
nice and we're just preaching be physical, be nasty, you know,
high effort guys. The technic will come we can always
fix the technique, but just be a high motor guy,
be physical, be nasty, and everything else to take care

(05:41):
of itself.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
That's what we're kind of preaching. Do everything right.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
Speaking of being physical and being nasty. Mother than that
you're physically you're definitely nasty.

Speaker 6 (05:49):
Did you did?

Speaker 5 (05:50):
Was that was that because you was on the I
know you wanted to win the game, But was it
because you was on the biggest stage that they put
out there? Because Bill Belichick night and Michael Jordan was
Do you feel like that cat a little extra onto
that game for you guys?

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Nah, that was just part of it. We didn't care
who we were playing.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
We were going in there to kick some butt and
all that just kind of, you know, added to it.
It made it a little bit more special. But you know,
we were going in there to do our thing, regardless
of who was man.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Y'all was.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
So whoever runs the TCU football social media account kept
the receipts because.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
It was like every other thing.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
It was like tonight Bill Belichick coaches the you and
ce or no, it was like wake up, honey, you
and c plays TCU tonight with Coach Belichick and the
TCU account was like, go back to sleep, honey, something
like that.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
I saw it all. I don't know who runs it.
That was funny they kept all the receipts.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Yeah, man, I know early on y'all.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Y'all also dropped a video from the account where coach
Dykes was talking about, you know, he's won all these
super Bowls.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
I have a lot of respect for, but he ain't
gonna play one down of football.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Like how important was it for y'all to have that
mental going in like you talked about, of not worrying
about who you're playing against, but just winning the game itself.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, that was a huge part.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Like, like we said, the Belichick thing wasn't what we
were really worried about at all.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
It was just we were worried about ourselves.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
We knew, I mean, the first game of the season,
you're more worried about yourself than you are the opponent
because you don't got film on them.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Anyway. It's a whole new team each year now with
the transfer portal and everything.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
So we were just focusing on ourselves and if we
do this, then we'll come out successful. And we did
what we wanted to do, and we saw the we
saw the results.

Speaker 6 (07:34):
Now, how I think the game was really one in
my eyes through the trenches.

Speaker 5 (07:38):
I know that, you know, Bud Clark at an interception,
but you guys kept your quarterback up right while they couldn't.

Speaker 6 (07:44):
How how is that defensive line room for.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
The horn Frogs?

Speaker 6 (07:47):
Would you say, uh, put the world on? What would
you say about that defensive line?

Speaker 4 (07:51):
They're balling, bro, They're coming, They're coming to get after you.
This year, last year, first year with the DC. You know,
we started off a little slow. But this year they
got it rolling. Bro, They got it rolling. They just
got to keep the ball going.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
You he was talking about the trenches and uh, the
two long touchdown runs. I think it was that y'all had.
It was it was too similar. Plays looked like a
buck sweep. One of them you were pulling play side
and the other one you were pulling on the backside.
Just talk about that, that synergy that you guys have
amongst the offensive line, in the running back room to
be able to say like, hey man, if this is

(08:27):
the play that's hitting for us, keep calling it.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Let's keep it rolling.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
Yeah, we we love that stuff. We have so much
trust on our running backs, they're like, they're they all
can roll, all five of them can roll. And uh
so you know we call these run players. We know
we block it up right, that it's gonna be a big,
a big game. So we're just trying to make sure
we get our assignment right and you know, good technique everything, and.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
It'll work out. It'll work itself out. So we did
that on those plays and it just happened like that.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
You know, sweeps and you get a chance to pull
what is like, what is your eyes like when you
see a dB you get past that, you get to
that second.

Speaker 6 (09:07):
Level and you see a dB that you could just
clean over? What is what is what is that like?

Speaker 3 (09:11):
For you?

Speaker 4 (09:13):
That's one of the best feelings. You got so much anticipation.
You ready to go take somebody's head off. You know
what I'm saying.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
You just you're ready to go take somebody's head off,
and you're hoping, you know, with at the same time.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Yeah, man, that was that was always funny. Bruh, So
I get you with that. One man coach of Dyke's
is known for building like strong locker room cultures and
building up teams. Just what is he like on a
day to day basis in practice and team meetings and
all of those things like that.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Yeah, I would say it's very involved, like you're very
team meetings. Talk to us every day, man, even like
our special teams meetings given you know, notes, and then
all around practice.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
He's not just in one spot. He's going around to.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
Every position group, you know, making sure that his presence
is so in a good way.

Speaker 6 (10:02):
And then getting back to it.

Speaker 5 (10:03):
I'm not sure if he was there for the Colorado game,
No I was not, but so like I know that
was like getting back to how Bill Belichick was his
first game and you know when Colorado came that was
But did they did they talk about how it's similar
in that locker room a little bit, like how we're
not gonna let this that little antique stuff work against
us this time or anything.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
No, we didn't. We didn't.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
We didn't relate it back to that, but it was
just that like we're not gonna let this bother us mindset,
Like we hardly talked about it. You know, a few
clips you saw were the little times we did talk
about it.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
So we just kept that to a minimum and just
focused on ourselves.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Your quarterback man, Josh Hoover.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Obviously, I got a chance to watch him up close
and personal when y'all played UL last year in the
bowl game to New Mexico Bowl. And even in that game,
I was like, this dude can sling it. He gonna
be nice next year because I knew he was coming back.
What is different about him this year that's gonna allow you,
guys to kind of take that next step and being
a true Big twelve contender and even a college football

(11:06):
playoff contender.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
I mean, he is just performing at a super high level.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
You know, he knows when to get out of the
pocket if stuff's getting nasty, He's able to get on
the move and still make a very accurate throw. So
he's just playing at a super high level. He knows
his checks and everything. So I'm really excited for that.

Speaker 6 (11:27):
And the guy that he was throwing the ball to,
Jordan Dwyn.

Speaker 5 (11:30):
I mean, I know he had a pretty spectacular season
last year, but that night against Monday Night he had
nine catches for one hundred and thirty six yards in
a touchdown. Just what makes him so special?

Speaker 3 (11:39):
Guys?

Speaker 4 (11:40):
I mean I was so hyped on Monday just the
way he was balling like he would he caught a
pass and like you think he's gonna you think he's
getting tackled, and all of a sudden you look up
and he's still running, just breaking tackles out of nowhere.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
So, I mean, it was just special to see.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
And I mean, I knew he had it in him,
but I was I was even I was a little
surprised on Monday. I was awesome to watch. So I
can't wait for the rest of the season see what
he's got.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
Obviously along the offensive line, man that that room at
times is the kind of the unsung hero. The only
times that they bring it up is when it's the
big play or when the quarterback is getting sacked.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Like, how have you embraced that?

Speaker 1 (12:18):
That mantra of you know, we're responsible for so much
even though we're not always gonna get the most praise.

Speaker 4 (12:25):
Yeah, you know, we just try to keep our head
down and like you said, like we're gonna hear about
it if it's a bad play, and we're most likely
not going to hear about it if it's a good play.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
So we know when we hear the critiques.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
From outside sources and stuff like, there's nothing to worry about.
They don't really know what's going on. They don't know
what kind of protection we had, things like that. So
we just try to keep our head down and you know,
focus on what we dig good and what we need
to fix. Now.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
I know that you can't say it, but I'm gonna
say it. We don't care about Abaline Christians. But you
guys have a long you got a good schedule.

Speaker 5 (13:00):
After that, you got s MU Arizona State that's packed
the back ranked opponents. Then later on, you know, of
course with the Big twelve play and I think Big
twelve is really competitive this year. Do you think that
set the tone for y'all of what y'all think y'all
can do as y'all hand and start rolling into the season.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Yeah, I mean we're we're we.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
Know we played well and everything, but we do have
a lot of things to fix, and so we're just
gonna keep working on ourselves. You know, we do have
a we have a pretty nice schedule, so we just
got to keep getting ourselves together and make sure we're
ready to go for throughout the whole season because we
got a long run and it's gonna be it's gonna

(13:38):
be a fun, fun season.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Take us.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Uh, take us inside of the huddle on like a
third and one play and they call something running right
in behind you?

Speaker 3 (13:49):
Man?

Speaker 1 (13:50):
What what's your what's your thought process? How you locking
in right before that play gets started?

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (13:56):
First off, just making sure that my over lineman next
to me, you know that we're communicated right, we know
where we're going. And after that, it's just that dog mentality,
ready to go mess somebody up across from you. So
and then once that boss nap making it happen, don't
stop stop your feet.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
That's about it.

Speaker 6 (14:17):
Now talk to me, man, to me, Collot is about tradition.

Speaker 5 (14:20):
I don't really know what TCU tradition is, but you know,
I've seen a lot more traditions with Texas A and
M with their hands on their knees and yelling Tennessee
plays Rocky Top one hundred times.

Speaker 6 (14:31):
What is the TCU tradition that you had to get
used to?

Speaker 5 (14:35):
What you think is or you probably think it's key
the cool, or you like, I don't know about it,
But what is the TCU.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
Tradition that you got used to? Our our fight song,
I think is what it is. Our our riff ram bozzo.
Look look at the our thing that we do after games.
Nobody really knows what it means. I don't I don't
know what it means, but we do it and it's fun.
So just one of those things. When you first get
here you're like, what is going on? Like what they're saying,

(14:59):
but after after you learn it, you just you just
have fun doing it too.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
So that's definitely one of them.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
Man, that's wild what you say.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
It's riff ram boz. Look at these z this.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Let me ask you this, man, what's uh, what's the
hardest part about blocking a defensive lineman in the Big twelve?
You know, everybody always talks about like SEC like those
are the dudes, but Big twelve got some dudes as
well up front, Like what is it on a week
to week basis?

Speaker 2 (15:40):
What is it like blocking Big twelve defensive linemen?

Speaker 4 (15:43):
I mean yeah, I would say the competition is no
less than suc or whatever. I would say, just focusing
on yourself, like your own technique. As long as you
got good technique and you're gonna be able to do
what you want to do. You play with bad technique,
you know, it's it's not going to be a fun,
fun rep for you, so really just I would say,

(16:05):
focusing on yourself and being able to you know, perform
how you want to perform every player.

Speaker 5 (16:12):
And I want you to elaborate on that a little
bit because I mean, we always talk about big teams.

Speaker 6 (16:16):
We want to talk about SEC.

Speaker 5 (16:18):
You know, I don't know if you want to be
the Big twelve commissioner one day, but go ahead. What
would you say about, you know, showing love to the
teams in that conference? Because when it comes down to
the end, I think it's gonna be a couple of
teams from the Big Twelve in there. What can you
say about the teams and the conferences and how y'all
could compete against.

Speaker 4 (16:32):
Over Yeah, I think Big Twelve, out of all the conferences,
we have the most competitive conference out of anybody. Like
even last year, like there were so many back and
forth games like we beat the team and that team
goes and beats the team that you know we lost too.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Like it's just it's all over the players.

Speaker 4 (16:50):
So I think that Big Bulk is one of the
best conferences just how competitive we are.

Speaker 3 (16:56):
Every week we got to show up. There's no easy games.

Speaker 4 (16:59):
So uh, just that you know we're competitive as as
a conference as a whole. So we're gonna be in
the in the end game.

Speaker 1 (17:08):
Now the seasons rolling here, man, what's some some individual
goals that you have laid out for yourself and then
obviously the team goals that.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
You have to.

Speaker 4 (17:17):
Uh yeah, so you know, I would just like to
myself to keep performing at a high level, you know,
no slacking off of course. And then as a team,
you know, we're trying to go one big twelve baby,
and then after that, Naddy.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
So that's it. I like that talk, Naddy.

Speaker 6 (17:36):
I like that talk.

Speaker 5 (17:38):
But getting back to your running back, Uh, is it
one two punch for y'all that that you would say?

Speaker 6 (17:44):
Is it one two punch or is it one two
three that we don't know?

Speaker 3 (17:47):
With the running back?

Speaker 4 (17:51):
It's a one two three four five you be ready
if we got.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
We got it, we got them all.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
Oh that's dope, man.

Speaker 1 (18:02):
Outside of a football like talk about like, what are
some things that you'd like to do away from the game,
because you know it's demanding for what you guys have
to do, the meetings, the practicing and all that stuff,
like they're balancing it with class.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
When you away from everything, what do you like to do.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
I like to go fishing. Me and a couple of
my teammates found some spots out here. We like to
go fishing. We'll play a little bit of golf, hang
out by a pool somewhere. Somebody's got a pool, go
hang out. Me and my roommate are watching some good
shows right now on Theranos right now, so we're grinding
that out.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
So fun. So you know some cool stuff.

Speaker 6 (18:39):
What's the biggest fish you ever caught?

Speaker 4 (18:43):
Well, I've been in like the golf before and caught
like a big, a big tuna, so I would probably
say that, But like here here, nothing too big, but
in the golf like a big tune or a barracuda
or something like that.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
Oh man, that's crazy.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
If you could give advice to, like any young offensive
linement that are kind of dreaming to be in your
shoes man, to play big time college football, what would
you kind of say to them?

Speaker 4 (19:18):
I would say, Man, just have that worth work ethic
like nothing, nothing's gonna beat that. Like there's no there's
no secret formula. It really is all just work. Like
you can outwork somebody who's so much more talented than
you every day of the week and you know, talent
can only go so far. So if you just are
a hard worker at every stage, then you have a

(19:41):
fighting chance at least. If you don't work hard, you
got no chance at all. So be a hard worker.
Go to work every day, you know, and something will
work out for you. Whether it's in football or in life.
You're a hardworker, Something's gonna work out for you.

Speaker 6 (19:54):
And my question is a two part question for you,
name of what stadium was your favorite that you played.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
In so far?

Speaker 6 (20:01):
And then what stadium are you waiting to play? And
as the season?

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Ooh uh is this just TCU are all? I mean?

Speaker 6 (20:12):
We know Dallas was great, doubt.

Speaker 4 (20:16):
I would say probably my favorite was Clemson at Tech
a couple of years ago.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
That was that was a cool place looking forward to.

Speaker 4 (20:28):
I would say, uh at and T Stadium for that
Big twelve championship.

Speaker 1 (20:35):
Yeah yeah, I like that talk talk man, I liked it.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
I liked that.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
