credit. Hello, listeners, friends, family, romans, countrymen, give
us your ears. Welcome back toanother episode of Flicks and Feedback. I'm
(00:26):
one of your hosts, Robbie Seely, and I am your other host,
Ethan Lazaro. Ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls. I hope you're having
a wonderful day, a wonderful night, a wonderful afternoon, you know,
whatever time it is, and we'rehere seeing the ship comes into this way.
Too much that, but that's sofunny, you know, there's just
(00:46):
you just gotta flip it around.I like using synonyms. Yes, exactly,
exactly. Uh, Robbie, Ethan, how you doing. I'm doing
really good. I'm having a goodtime. We you know, as we
do here on Flicks and Feedback. We just movie. We did just see
a movie. We went to themovie theater. Yeah, the first time
we had to go to the theaterin order to watch the movie. I
(01:08):
think this might be my new favoriteway to do it, you think,
yeah, I think so too,so too. This makes me if we
could do this even for like oldermovies too, that'd be that would be
like the best. Like if ifwe could just roll up to a theater
and just pick any movie from likeNetflix or whatever, and we could just
watch it, that'd be that'd beawesome. I Mean, sometimes they do
(01:30):
put old movies back in theaters, that's true. That's just called it re
release. But yeah, I didsee I did see Return of the Jedi
re released in theaters. But wedid not see a re release. We
did not see a re release. We saw a brand new it's like less
than a week old. I thinkit might be exactly a week old or
something like that, or yeah, like this is like opening week, Yeah
(01:53):
exactly, and we saw a phenomenonand all fucking movie. I have so
much to say. I I thisis gonna be a long episode. I'm
already feeling it. Yeah, forsure. But tell them what we saw.
We saw the newest addition to thevery large and very extensive A twenty
(02:16):
four catalog. We just saw AlexGarland's newest masterpiece, absolute master Civil Civil.
And this is a movie that wehad watched during trailer time in the
first episode of Feedback when we reviewedFive Nights at Freddy's when it first came
(02:38):
out. We saw that we sawCivil War as a trailer and now three
episodes later we saw the movie. We saw the movie. Sorry, I
was just speechless for you can leavethat. I was speechless for a hot
second. Yeah, because that's howit left us. It was intense movie.
(03:00):
We walked out of there saying whatthe fuck? Yep, and holy
shit quite a few times. Yeah, So, as usual, shall we
get into the brass tacks of thisfilm and cover those basis so that we
can get into how he felt aboutit? The details? Sweet, So,
as you said, mister Alex Garlanddirected it. He also wrote it
and yeah, ritten directed by AlecGarland. Shout Alex Garland. Count how
(03:23):
many times we said that this episode? Yeah, yeah, because I have
a lot of shout outs to thisman. And obviously produced by the one,
the only A twenty four Now wehaven't really touched upon like production companies
a whole lot. We did talkabout Blumhouse yep when Five Nights came out,
masterpiece, but a twenty four veryquickly growing catalog, very much they
(03:46):
have, Like we saw at leasttwo or three trailers for A twenty four
movies yeah before this one started.Yeah, and I mean, you know,
like there was one called like Maxineright about this girl who Wants the
Uh. I believe it's part ofthe XXX trilogy or the saga. I
think it's I think it's getting tobe a saga now because it was like
(04:09):
three movies at first, but thenthis, I think is four. Yeah.
Interesting, Yeah, I only knewabout the first one X yeah yeah,
but yeah, very large gang, still growing catalog. They produced amazing
films like Hereditary Midsummer. Did theythey do Nope? Jordan Peele, Nope,
(04:32):
I think they. I think theymight have done Nope. I think
so. It would be so upsetif I just said no, because I
do. I love that movie.Nope, I still haven't seen it.
I call myself a centophile, andthen I don't watch movies. I can't
believe you haven't seen Nope yet.I know, I know, I know.
(04:53):
No they didn't do no, Ohthey didn't. Okay anyways, yes,
so very large, very extensive, growing cattle from A twenty four and
we just saw Civil War, whichis their their newest to the to the
scene. So uh. Some ofthe some of the names. Great cast,
yeah, great phenomenal cast. Alot of new faces some uh,
(05:16):
recognizable faces, but mainly some newones who I haven't really seen before,
which obviously we are so down forbecause we are aspiring performers and entertainment entertainment
industry people ourselves, so we loveto see new and upcoming representation. But
that being said, two huge namesfrom film and TV everywhere, Nick Offerman,
(05:44):
the King and the Queen. Ohmy god, the way I remember
when we saw the movie or sorry, I saw the trailer excuse myself,
the you know it was so therewas it was Nick Offerman, Nick Gofferman,
and it was saw he was gonnabe in it way way I really
thought we would hear from Oh andalso, oh and welcome to a movie
(06:04):
podcast, folks, So from hereon out. Spoiler alert. Yes,
so Nick Offerman and Kirsten Dunst wereboth headliners in the In the billing for
this movie, nick Offerman playing thePresident the United States main villain, actually
yeah, we'll get in there. And then Kirsten Dun's playing our leading lady
(06:28):
Lee ding Lady d lady playing asas you just did, such a what
a good pun, buddy. Yeah, So Kirsten Dunn's playing Lee, as
well as some bigger names like Wagner, Mora Nelson Lee Uh and a face
I haven't seen before, not beforetoday, Kaylee Spainy, Spain. I
(06:54):
think it's Spainy. Kaylee Spainey playedcrushed it. Jesse, Oh my god,
absolutely crushed. Fucking phenomenal performance.Like we'll get we'll get into her
character development, but just such suchan amazing, amazing role she they had.
There's some great, great monologues inthis movie that I think, Yeah,
(07:14):
I'm definitely gonna be able to takefrom it. Was it was again
Shadow Alex Garland. It was reallyso well, very very good. You
know. One of the biggest thingsI think to take from the car ride
after conversation, which is, youknow, the best time after you see
a movie or a show or agame or whatever. It is the immediate
time after it, because you talkabout what you just saw and it's so
(07:35):
fresh in your mind. That's whywe are recording immediately right exactly. I
think my feelings about it would havebeen very different if we had recorded and
we sat with it. Yes,Shadow Alex Garland, but the pacing is
what we talked about in the carand it was just it was actually so
(07:56):
perfect. I it was yes,it took you. It grabbed you from
the start, and and it reallyyou were running along with the movie the
entire way. It was quite aroller coaster, very much so. But
it really did have good highs, good peaks, and really good valleys.
It was it felt well balanced.Yeah, like after a scene or a
(08:18):
shot of you seeing someone get markedget literally shot just dead, bing bang
boom, you're gone, it wasbalanced out with like nice montages of you
know, like them making their tripto towards DC, and just yeah,
I really I can't if I don'tstop talking about the pacing now all night,
(08:41):
because I wholeheartedly agree, my friend, uh, the nothing is worse
in a suspense thriller horror movie whenshit just be going too well? Right,
when shit be going too well,I'm just sitting there waiting for all,
right, what's what's what's what badthat is gonna come from this?
(09:01):
Like there there was at one pointwhere they were in a town that was
completely unaffected by the war. Yeah, and I was just like, what
is going on? What happened?Yet? Like Joel Wagner Morris character Joel
was like, did we just gothrough like a time portal? Because it's
the line, great line, again, great writing, and just the way
(09:22):
that they were like, oh mygod, like like, how is this
town unaffected? Like because like therewas a whole war going on across the
whole country. It affected the entirenational United States of America, which in
this movie weren't so united. Yeah. Well actually forty eight of them were
forty eight yeah, yeah, morethan more than seventy. So true.
(09:46):
I do have a fun fact already. Please about this cast though, Wagner
Moro, Wagner Moro, Moro.Do you know who he voiced? No,
let me click into his IMDb.He voiced the wolf. Another great
(10:07):
master my god, because I couldn't. I didn't recognize his voice when we
were watching when we were watching CivilWar. But look listening like looking at
the IMDb and thinking about it,I'm like, oh, yeah, that
if you if I closed my eyes, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah exactly. But yeah, thatwas that was just a fun fact that
I saw when we were doing ourquick little research session after after watching the
(10:31):
movie. But Robbie, let's let'slet's start right from the beginning, shall
we, so very very strong openingwith the speech Nick as old President opened
with the President preparing for to givelike a like a State of the address
(10:52):
kind of Now I I was thinkingabout this. I was like, as
he was saying, it wasn't live, like was he was he doing those
corrections live? Okay, So ifthat's the case, Wow, way to
like show the humanity of that position, because it's like also he was evil,
(11:16):
he like ramped it up to bemore scary, right, But at
the same time, think about it, like all of like all of the
State of the Union addresses, allof the fucking press conferences that people do
standing at that same fucking seal ofthe United President of the United States,
how many tries do you think they'regetting? Not a lot, they're thinking.
They probably don't get to the podiummore than three four five minutes before
(11:41):
their headed before the cameraman goes liveexactly. So when you know the president
took a minute to be like,is how I want is that I want
to say it's gonna He's gonna sayit like multiple times to see how it
comes out, because that's big,Like think about out what he was saying.
He was literally saying that Texas andCalifornia had just seceded from the United
(12:09):
States and that the United States government. All that was remaining was they were
ready for another victory. They were, they are, they are this close.
If you can't really you can't seeit, but I'm holding my fingers
really close together, and they arethis close to another victory. And to
(12:31):
think about that in the terms oflike a civil war, like it's it's
the United States pinning itself against eachother, which is unfathomable to talk.
To think about if the president ofthe United States, the one person that
everybody in this country looks to,is saying we're gonna win this civil war
(12:58):
where you could be fighting your neighbors, you could be fighting your family,
your friends, your pets, likeunbelievable. So anyways, that's my that's
my Nick Offerman presidential rant. Iwish he was in it more. He
was literally in the first scene andthe last scene and with small radio transmissions
(13:18):
in between, which was kind ofa bummer. Like I wanted like like
I didn't want like I didn't needto see board meetings or anything. No,
no, no, no, Iwanted to see him freaking out.
I wanted to see him freaking out. I wanted to see what the president
looks like when he'shit in his pants, like when like you know, obviously
like knock on wood that we don'tget put into this situation, that that
(13:41):
type of situation anytime soon. Butbut what because there's there's no way,
there's no way. Everybody in thatplace is so fucking calm. There is
no fucking way because that's not human. There's so many like you said,
everyone looks to him and into thatgroup of people who work in the White
(14:05):
House, like all of everyone's eyesare always towards DC and just the yeah,
the immense pressure, like everything that'sat stake is crazy. Not that
I'm like on the side of politicians, but you know, but like I,
yeah, I this movie did, like you said, show the humanity,
(14:26):
yes, end of that position, end of their jobs. But you
know, it wasn't a movie aboutpoliticians now, and it wasn't a movie
about politics, and that I thinkis the beauty of it. Yes,
because you got you got great filmslike Olympuses Fallen zero Dark thirty zero dark
(14:46):
thirty, fucking even the Depotted,Like you know, you get all of
those films where it's politicians talking aboutpolitics. Ye. Boring, suit,
so fucking boring. What I wantto see is the Joe Schmo average person.
(15:07):
As we get right to the nextpart of the film, where we
see what it's like for the actual, yes, innocent people fighting at the
front line who are just trying tolive toe to toe with the with the
with the motherfuckers with the riot shields. Yeah, that was crazy. So
before we get into that, Ireally really want to believe that some of
(15:31):
the clips that they were showing duringNick Offerman's speech were not real. I
don't think any of it was.No, no, okay, no,
it was all movie okay, becausethey made it look it real. It
looked it looked like I was watchingclips on TikTok from only a couple of
(15:56):
years ago. Like it got itgot fucking real real quick. This movie
certainly did. I couldn't help butthink about just a couple of years ago.
You know, when we were, like you said, seeing clips of
on TikTok, You know of ofthe massive civil rights movement that we had
(16:17):
and are still having, and youknow in that the crazy in the protest,
she was insane. And now, just as a disclaimer, we are
not here to preach our political beliefs. Obviously, everybody is allowed to have
their own beliefs and believe in whatthey want to believe in. So as
(16:37):
as a film critique, we aregoing to speak about this from a very
objective point of view, and we'renot going to choose sides or anything like
that. But Robbie, I justhave one question for you, Yes,
sir, what kind of American areyou? Dude? A haunting question that
(16:59):
was in the trailer too. Iwas in the trailer, And to touch
on something that we talked about witha few of our coworkers today when we
said that we were going to seethis movie, is that that trailer trailers
showed a lot. Man, itdid show a lot. And that is
something that one of our coworkers saidto us, And I was like,
huh, you know, I don'tthink I've everly really compared, like really
(17:22):
analyze the trailer to the movie. But see now that we have a movie
podcast, Yeah, seeing the trailerand then seeing like how much of the
trailer of the movie they showed inthe trailer yet, And there was exact
moments where I was like, oh, that's that was exactly in the trailer.
Oh I saw that. But inmy opinion, it was such a
(17:45):
well done rollercoaster of a movie thatI kind of was able to look past
it. Yeah, I was kindof able to look past it ruin it
because even in the clip that theyshowed in the trailer of the helicopter flying
over the Lincoln Memorial inflames, whenthey showed that in the film, my
jaws still dropped to the floor.I was like, what the fuck.
(18:07):
So anyways, we get to ourmain protagonists of the film, Lee played
by Kirsten Duntz, as well asWagner Moa, who are a press,
a a wartime press duo. Theythey work together photographers. Joel played by
(18:33):
Wagner Moora is the interviewer and kindof like the the face and the the
charisma of the of the of theduo. And then Lee is the photographer
and holds the camera and is offon the sidelines like taking pictures of Joel
(18:55):
as well while he's conducting his interviewsand doing the talking and stuff like that.
And most of like, most ofwhat we saw was like I feel
like a lot of the times therewas a lot of especially when we get
to Jesse, which we will soonintroduce, like there was times like he
had to like pull her away fromit, and he had to like literally
(19:15):
pick them up and be like let'sgo, we gotta go. And like
in just other times when he wasjust like leading them and so he was.
It was he was kind of themuscle. He was. He was
kind of a muscle. You know, every every every party has to have
the brute, you know, ofcourse. But yeah, so we open
on a scene with them driving ina car, both Lee and Joel,
(19:37):
on the way to a scene thatis happening a protest, a protest of
sorts, a bunch of civilians withjugs, buckets, gallons of empty of
empty plastic containers in front of awall of law enforcement with riot shields and
(20:00):
they're all shouting, we want water, we want water. So clearly there
is some sort of a drought orsome sort of a ban on the water
based your situation, like where youare, like geologically definite supply. And
we the movie opened up in NewYork, and it opened up in New
York, which which uh New YorkCity. The reason why they say their
(20:26):
bagels are better is because they gettheir water from uh upstate New York.
So they're getting all that clean, fresh mountain water water but for New York
to say that, to say thatthey they to say that they are in
need of water like that is amassive population of a city that is all
going at the same time saying weneed fucking water. And so the the
(20:51):
scene opens up and we meet Jesse, who is one of the amateur photographers
of the of the scene. Now, mind you, photography is shown throughout
the entire film. It is,it's one of the the main focus.
Yeah, I would say it is. Besides it, they are they are
all working together to get photos anddocument this civil war that is happening,
(21:17):
because you know when you when you'rethe first photographer to get that picture exactly
book exactly so, and they're allworking for individualized companies as well, so
they're all trying. They're basically allcompeting to get the best photo of dead
people. Unfortunately, unfortunately the time. So we meet Jesse, who is
(21:37):
an amateur photographer surrounded by professionals firingwar yes photographer, and she she ends
up getting a bit too close toone of the riot shielders and gets a
baton to the face and gets absolutelywhacked. Now, something that they they
(22:00):
showed throughout the entirety of the filmis when photographers and press are out on
the scene, they're always wearing bulletproofpress vests or least something that pressed.
So whether it be a lime greenluminescent vest or a helmet a literal a
(22:22):
literal helmet that says press right acrossit, it's shown throughout the entire film.
So then Lee grabs Jess and islike, hey, you gotta be
careful, you got to put thison, and hands her her. Lee
hands Jesse Lee's vest and is basicallykind of like cool, like almost early
(22:45):
on passing of the torch foreshadowing moment, kind of being like the drivers see
now. But anyways, Lee handsher the vest and it's like, you
gotta you gotta stay safe, justput it on. What Ever, the
next time I see you, youbetter be wearing a helmet that and kevlar
exactly. And I was like, whoa, that's yeah, that was a
(23:07):
that was a great little motif throughoutthe throughout the film. And then almost
seemingly out of nowhere, somebody throwson a backpack and just completely and that
scene runs right into the crowd anda bomb goes off right in the middle
and everybody, Lee, Jess Joel. They are all completely shell shocked because
(23:37):
in my mind, in my mind, that might have been one of the
biggest moments that has happened in awhile. Yeah, you know, maybe
maybe it had been a while sincethe kickoff of the war, so at
that point it had already been likea good couple of weeks, maybe a
month or something like that, andthen that was the big like kaboom to
(24:02):
light the flame of this war.So after the bomb goes off, Lee
immediately grabs out her camera and startslike literal seconds after the bomb goes off,
Jesse and Joel are still completely shellshocked and are like, what is
(24:22):
going on? What is going on? And Lee is already at the dead
bodies taking pictures. Yes, sheshe shakes it off so quickly. Now,
I would be remiss if we didn'ttalk about that idea for a minute
at least. Oh, yeah,it was it was a yeah, it
was a hot minute in the car. So it deserves a couple of hot
minutes on the mic. So nice. I like that. I like that.
(24:44):
Thank you. Let him cook?Okay. So, throughout a majority
of this film, Lee is shownas a hardened veteran stowick bitch. Yeah,
like she like you do not wantto be her friend. She is
(25:07):
she is not exactly like the mosthappy person to be around business business business
all the time. It's all themost lovable character. It's all about the
worst but the most respectable. Youcan't take that away from No, absolutely
not. She works hard, shereally loves what she does, and she's
(25:27):
not afraid to put herself in dangerexactly. And I think that is the
important thing to take away from thisis we're not We're not judging her because
of what she's been through. Weare more impressed that she can watch literal
and innocent civilians be blown to smithereens. And the first thought in her mind
(25:52):
is click click, click click click, the people need to see this.
Yeah. And she had a phenomenalfucking quote. Do you remember it?
Which one when she was out inthe front lines, when she took a
picture it was like sending a warningto home to never do this. Yep.
(26:14):
Yes, oh yeah, I'm gettingI'm getting goose just thinking about it.
That is a haunting statement because she'sso right, Because they throughout the
film they showed flashbacks to her onthe front lines in other countries. Yeah,
seeing people be shot in the head, people being burnt alive and then
(26:37):
burnt alive. There was some reallythere's some it's wrong. There's some tough
moments, moments in this movie. This is a very very graphic movie.
It was very graphic, and therewas phenomenally done by the way, oh
my shadow, Alex Carland. Yeah, and it was just like you said,
it was. The whole movie ishaunting, and like there were parts
of the movie I felt so uncomfortable. I felt sick to my stomach.
(27:02):
I can I can think of atleast a good handful of time where I
actually felt sick to my stomach. It was I had to close my eyes
quite a lot. I had ablink for longer than just a second.
Yea. And But like I saidwhen I was talking about the pacing,
here I go again on the pacing, is that it was so well,
(27:22):
It was just so good because notonly was you know, did we and
you'll continuing on with where the blockgoes? Is you know then after that
the unfortunate suicide bombing that we seehappen. We turned to Lee and Joel.
They're in a local hotel. They'regetting ready to keep going, which
(27:45):
is crazy to think about, likewhen when something is like that, like
in another country, like they they'rejust they're just like a bunch of press
people all together like just cuting thethe whatever's going on. And so they're
in an American hotel covering a warand they're just all like chatting, laughing,
(28:11):
like they got drunk at the barlike that. That was a part
that kind of irked me in thesense of wow, like that is fucking
ignorant. There are there are peopleliterally suffering down the block probably from where
(28:32):
you're staying, or down a fewblocks. It's in the same city,
a couple of streets away from aplace that just got blown up, and
you're all sitting there uploading your photos, having a great time, joking,
laughing, having drinks like so sofucking ignorant. Yeah. Literally. One
(28:52):
of the one of the opening sceneswas Lee in her hotel no, no,
no, sorry, sorry this isAnd then one of the next scenes,
right it was next is when wesaw Lee in her hotel room.
Yes, yeah, yeah, ohmy god. And and then she she
says, in the bed, andthen from out the window we see that
(29:15):
was that was yeah, yeah, but yeah, sorry, I was getting
out of work but yeah, andseeing seeing the explosion out the window.
Yes, But then we see themin the hotel, Joel and Lee talking
(29:36):
to a new character, We meetSammy. We love Sammy. Sammy played
by Stephen McKinley Henderson. What agreat man, what a great actor,
great character. Yeah, oh mygod. And the way he did it
was so he did he played thecharacter so well. The most lovable character
in the movie. He's a Lee. Most tragic end, but most lovable
(30:00):
character and brutal spoiler alert, noteveryone makes it through. Now and we
see Joel and Lee talking to Sammyabout like what they're doing next, and
it turns out they are planning tohead to d C because they got word
that the WF, the Western Forces, the growing, the ever growing militia
(30:22):
going up against the president for eightgoing against the two and a half.
Yeah, which was insane. Andthen I'll come back to that too,
that they're planning to go to DCbecause they heard that the w the WF,
the Western Forces are moving in onthe White House to kill the president.
(30:45):
Like, what a shocking statement.Yeah, when when that is revealed,
and you know, it's crazy,it's just so crazy. But then
we see a familiar face walking aroundthe hotel. We see Jesse, and
she obviously had figured out where Leewas staying. And then she bumps into
(31:10):
Lee, you know, tells herhow she's her hero and all this other
stuff and that she has the samenames as one of her other heroes,
which I thought that was kind ofgoofy. It was goofy. It was
cute, it was goofy. Iwas like, you have It's like you're
meeting your hero, like if youif you met if you met your hero,
and you'd just be like rambling, just be like I love you,
(31:33):
Like if I met Tobey Maguire,I really would. I love that man.
I love the O G. SpiderMan movies. But sorry, and
that that's where I fell in lovewith Kirsten Dunce. I love this woman.
I am a little biased towards her. But Lee was a bitchy character.
(31:56):
And yes, Jesse bumped into Lee. Were vomits at her, and
then Lee's like thanks, And Ithink this is when she said. Was
this when she said the next timeI see No? That was at the
suicide bombing? Right she said ittwice? Okay, she did say it
twice. Oh, yes, becauseJesse tried to give her back the fluorescent
(32:20):
vest and she's like, no,keep it and next time, wear a
helmet and yeah, and then Leegoes to bed, and then the next
thing we see is them the nextmorning getting ready to leave, and Sammy's
in the car and Jesse's in thecar, and so Lee pulls Joel aside
(32:42):
and she's like, what the fuck? And then the four of them were
a great group, very interesting dynamic, very mystery gang esque. Yeah,
quite a mishmash, quite a motleycrue, if you will. And then
so stars, it's our great adventure, the hero's journey. Yes, and
(33:06):
yeah, now yep. One thingI want to bring up to that we
had discussed about was who's fighting whoand whose side are people on. Yeah,
I will say that was a littlefuzzy to me. Yeah at first
at first, at first, Aftertalking with you, I think I think
(33:28):
I clarified it. But the bigthing to note is it's literally forty eight
out of the fifty states are aremad at the other two and a half
the other the half the half beingWashington, DC. Because it's basically a
(33:54):
hired mercenary militia against the US government. And the militia is winning. So
throughout the film, I was kindof like, all right, obviously,
the reporters and the press they're they'rethey're unbiased, you know, they're they
(34:16):
they are looking at it like weare just here to photograph both sides,
you know, like we're here totake We're not here to take sides.
We're just here to take pictures, not here to take sides, here to
take pictures. Put that on afucking T shirt. Get me on the
A twenty four marketing team. Guys, I can do this, I promise
(34:37):
anyway. So for for the press, it's very unbiased. But then you
get into the people that are aroundthem, and you're kind of like,
oh, who are you fighting for? Which side? Which side? Which
side are you on? But theyevidently the press end up taking the Western
(34:59):
front side. Yeah, which Iyou know, Yeah, like I I
didn't. I didn't care either way, whatever side they they took, you
know, it was that was justthe the choice that Alex Garland had made
for the characters. But anyway,I'm randing. So what we get for
(35:22):
a majority of the movie is theteam traveling south all the way from New
York City to Washington, d C. Five hundred plus miles. I believe
it was. I liked the cards, Yes, the the time cards of
of X of X many miles tod C. I did like that.
(35:44):
Yeah, I agree, And itwas a good It was a good marker
too for for us to be like, Okay, they're they're this close,
so we still got this much time, yeah, and stuff like that.
It was another good pacing exactly exactly. It was good. And so what
we what we get for for whatwe get for the rest For a good
(36:06):
majority of the movie is the teamstopping along the way different mile markers on
their way to Washington, d C. And so they run into some friendly
people, some very not so friendlypeople, and a lot happens. And
you know, as long as wetouch upon some of the bigger moments,
(36:30):
I think, I think that'll that'llbe good. Because you you guys still
got to go and watch the movieyourself. Yes, oh my god,
yes, please, I feel sucha good movie. I very very much
highly recommend you go see this movie. Absolutely, it was quite a rattling
experience in the theater. But ifI think that's what the movie was trying
to achieve, it was a veryloud movie. Like there was a scene
(36:52):
of helicopters flying in to a toa w F base camp, and you
could feel you could feel it,and it was just so many helicopters were
just for for so long, alot of helicopters, the jets, the
flyover. But I love the soundof a flyover, love a flyover.
(37:13):
Yeah, Robbie got a little peppedup during during that part. I wash,
here we go, Yeaholo, welcomeappearance, my doggie, my puppy.
So a big if I if Imay so. A couple of stops
along the way they run into somesome warfare, yeah, along a lot
(37:37):
of it, Yeah, I saysome there it was there was a home
you know, it was a warmovie, but it wasn't a war movie.
Yeah. And so throughout that time, Uh, Jess is Jesse,
sorry, Jesse is slowly starting tolearn and grow as a war photographer.
(38:00):
We can't not talk about when theystopped to get gas, Oh my god,
because that was so brutal, likesuch a okay, so basic summary.
They stop and get gas, andthe currency discussion was a bit off
(38:22):
putting to me too, because theysaid three hundred, meaning I'm assuming three
hundred you American dollars. But thenhe said three hundred what Canadian? And
then she said lead for three hundredCanadian? Yeah, and they and he
told that, yeah, and theguy at the gas station was like,
three hundred will get you a sandwich, cam or cheese. Because I think
(38:46):
the US dollar fell off. Itwas definitely fell off. I'm thinking that's
what that was. And I meanyou got Texas and California succeeding, you
mean, the two biggest states.Yeah. Yeah, if even they're turning
against the president, it's because theyled, because they were leading the attack
against Yeah. That was crazy. And so then when they the guys who
(39:13):
I guess run and keep the gasstation, mind you, they were all
holding machine guns and were clearly notvery nice guys. They were definitely taking
advantage of the chaos. No,no, they were definitely there to to
cause a ruckus. And Jesse endsup getting out of the car and walks
(39:36):
over to a next door car wash, the car wash, and she shot
she saw it on the way in, and she ends up getting followed by
one of the men holding up thegas station, and she looks into the
car wash and she sees two livingbodies. They were they were people hanging
(40:04):
shackled up, yeah, like fromthere by their hands shackled and tied to
the inside of this car wash likethe the arch car wash, beaten and
battered. Yeah, not torture.Torture it is a better word. And
Jess is just staring at it likedumbfounded, and then Lee walks all over
(40:30):
her and it's like, hey, guy, can I get your picture?
Well he was. It was definitelya tactic to be like, hey,
back off the girl, because hewas definitely antagonized. He was up sizing
her up like I don't I don'teven want to think about what he was
thinking. No, stop it.But and so then stepped it and steps
(40:53):
in and says, can I takeyour picture? And I'm sure that must
have been a horrifying picture? Mm the I and real quick, actually,
no, finish this because then Ihave my next point. And then
they they cut to them back inthe car, and Jesse is just in
full sobbing breakdown because that was mostlikely her first experience with something like that
(41:22):
insane so close up, and shehad said why did he shoot them?
And so he definitely killed them Afterthat moment kind of kind of you know,
played with her, and so withthat, Jesse kind of has a
building block under her now of hernext step to becoming like Lee, this
(41:46):
very veteran, hardened person who isable to just go and take the photos
and not think about how badly peopleare being hurt, to follow in her
heroes footsteps ex truly and that Ihave two points now, Yeah, when
you said building block, I reallylike that, that metaphor and that image
(42:07):
because this the climb in this movie, the build, the pacing once again,
it was so the build was insanefor where it goes in the end,
and God shadowed Alex Garland once againbecause it was so again it was
(42:27):
so well paced, and the buildwas actually so crazy in the way that
it was, you know, notonly so steady, but it was so
rewarding each step and every time, you know, every minute the movie progressed,
it was it was something brutal,a nice and nice little montage adventure
moment, something more brutal and evenmore close up and then even more like
(42:53):
sidebar, We're gonna chill and talkbecause like in between you know, those
hardcore moments, they would stop atlike almost like a refugee camp, you
know, where like the civilians hadmade camp in a in like a football
stadium, right, and then wesee our four main protagonists sitting out on
(43:15):
a on a blanket and lawn chairs, passing a bottle of vodka around and
passing a joint around it like likeyou said, the balance and the pacing.
Just with all of that together,it really humanized them and it also
(43:36):
showed how locked in they need toget when when doing their kind of work.
When when she hits the fant Yeah, and then that brings me to
my second point because you had mentionedthat the picture that Lee had took of
the two dudes hanging up, sothat was a picture that we didn't see.
(44:00):
There was a lot of pictures takenin that movie that we didn't see.
Compare that to the ones that wedid see. Yeah, because there
was a lot of moments where wewould see Lee or Jesse pick up the
camera take a picture, and thenwe would see the image that they got.
Was such a cool effect, andI think it was overdone all came
out, Yes, I agree,I agree, like ten maybe fifteen minutes
(44:25):
of just normal screen time. Theyhad a couple of picture montages where it
was like they take a picture, the picture shows up on the screen and
then back to the action, backto the like that was oh cool,
beautiful cinematography. Beautiful. But anyway, sorry for cutting you off, Apollo.
(44:46):
You gotta stop it. And sojust thinking about all the pictures,
all the pictures that we didn't seemYeah, that was such a really cool
tool that they used to flash thosepictures on on helping with the pacing.
Yeah, and then it comes fulleffect at the very end, which we
will get to. And then whenwe saw, you know, back at
(45:09):
that that camp made up in thestadium, we see Jesse developing some of
her pictures because the old fashion away. Yeah, she's using film, while
Lee is using a DSLR of somekind and a digital camera and uh,
he's more dedicated. Yeah, Jesse'susing an old fashioned like film camera.
(45:31):
Which was a nice, a nicetouch because it showed the veteran using the
new shiny, you know, fancycameras and then the amateur, the the
young, up up and comer,uh using the old fashion stuff. Like
you know, it's like a handme down or like that's your like like
(45:52):
your beater car, your first caris always your beater car, you know,
but then at the end of themovie, somebody must have gotten those
camera anyway. So yes, Jesse'sJesse's journey as a person, as a
photographer, as a woman, allis shown throughout the entirety of the film.
(46:20):
And one thing that we we shouldnot neglect talking about is Sammy.
Oh, such a a funny likeobviously the comedic relief of the of the
group. They all had their moments, but Sammy of all was definitely like
the kind I don't want to say, the voice of reason, but definitely
(46:40):
the hold on, wait a minute, let's think about this. Yeah,
no, so I would call themthe voice of reason. Yeah, for
sure. Like when we roll upto the the the home. I don't
even know what to call them, but it was because it wasn't w F
(47:01):
but it was just like a localmilitia as I guess what's best to call
the whole? The whole? Yeah, oh, I hate that we called
it that. But the pit,the body pit. Yeah, let's yeah,
let's dig into that, shall we. It's so hard to so yeah,
(47:22):
we uh Jesse and uh oh,what what was that character's name?
I'm the worst. So so wesee them all get on the road again,
back on the road again, andthat would have been a great addition
(47:45):
to the already amazing soundtrack. Ohthat too, phenomenal soundtrack. Yeah,
And so we see them get backin the car, get back on the
road, and Lee's driving, Sammy'sin the back seat with Jesse. Jesse
just put her head down, takea little nap, and Lee notices a
car coming up super fast behind them, you know, gaining ground really fast.
(48:07):
And I'm my initial thought was,oh fuck, they're being followed.
Yeah, like, like you thinkit's gonna be bad, not a good
follow so you are led to believeit's gonna be bad guys. And then
it turns out it's just some ofJoel's friends, Tony and Bohai Tony and
(48:29):
great names. And what ends uphappening is, you know, they're speeding
down this road together, and thisroad empty road. Every road has been
empty. Other than crashed cars, all of the roads are empty. There's
zero traffic, super easy commutes. And but a moment that like really built
(48:52):
suspense and like kind of scared mewas when Tony was like, Yo,
I'm gonna climb into your car,and I was like, no, no,
please, no, I thought wewere gonna get hereditary. I well,
I knew A twenty four wouldn't usethat again, but but they were
teasing it for sure it's gonna happen, and then it's We had a good
(49:15):
overhead shot of Tony climbing into intoLee's car, and I thought he was
somehow gonna get cut in half thatwe were. We were on that shot
for a few seconds too long long, and I was like, oh no,
this is it, this is it. This is when the montage ends
and goes back into the hard ship, the hard core stuff. But luckily
(49:37):
that didn't happen. What happened wasTony climbed into the car with lead Joel
and Sammy and Jesse was like,oh, man, I gotta do that.
So she climbs out of their carand into the car with just bow
high. And what we learned wasbo Hi was a crazy driver. So
(49:58):
not only did he gain a lotof ground on them, pulled up to
them super fast. He then tookoff with Jesse, leaving Tony with Joel,
Sammy and Lee. And so they'redriving driving down the road and then
they see they come across the carthat Bohai was driving with Jesse in it
(50:20):
pulled off to the side, doorsopen, no one in the car,
nobody's in the car. No one'sin the car. I thought it was
crashed at first. I was waitingfor them to come up on a crash.
Yeah, so good good on AlexGarland and everyone who made this movie
to really fake us out, yea, to really make us because again,
like we thought, or at leastI thought, Tony was gonna get kind
(50:44):
of half yep. And there wasa lot of moments like that where like,
oh, this is gonna be somethingI've seen before. Yeah, if
it's an A twenty four movie,it's most definitely something you've never seen before.
It's always gonna be NPD with theseguys. And so then they come
across they come across this car withno one in it, so of course
they're like, oh, where thefuck is Jesse because that's the like like
(51:07):
we'd need her back. And thenthey pulled down a driveway, like down
a little side road, and ethan, what what what do we come across?
What does Lee find when she pullsout the camera and super zims in.
So Lee ends up looking through hercamera lens, which she uses as
(51:27):
a pair of binoculars crazy throughout thewhole film, which was a super cool
touch because I mean, I wouldif that if that was my tool.
And she zooms in and she seesBohi and Jesse being led towards a large
truck dumping truck that is just chockfull of dead bodies. Yes, that
(51:53):
is being poured into a hole fullof more dead bodies, and they are
being captured by two independent or somesort of associated militia men, armed and
dangerous, and they're like, well, we gotta fucking save them. Yeah.
(52:16):
It was just an ununiformed militia whowere taking care of business. I
guess it's really bad way to putit, Bobby, but yeah, and
it was a haunting scene of themthat that lead what what was the name
of the Can we find the actorwho played that one particular militia man?
(52:42):
Militia man. It looks like thatis Yep, that is Jesse Plemmons.
Shout out Jesse Plemons. He wasalso in He was in Breaking Bad,
He was in someone Bringing Bad.He was in a movie called Love and
Death from last year. So Idon't know what else you've seen them in.
(53:07):
Well, anyways, his his role, Yeah, and his his dialogue.
It okay. So at first tome this scene felt like it was
really dragging, But when I thoughtabout it more, I was like,
oh my god, he's toying withthem. Yeah, he is toying with
(53:30):
them. He doesn't give a fuck. No, they don't give a fuck.
What side he's asking. He's theone who asked them what kind of
American are you? And yeah andhis his his game that he played with
(53:50):
them. I was like, itmade me so uncomfortable and that this was
probably one of yeah, top toouncomfortab moments and the whole, the whole
thing. So he asks them whatkind of American are you? Because obviously
you know it is America, butlike, what what side are you on?
Because that that has a huge hugeimpact on you know, their their
(54:14):
fate. But in the end itreally didn't. But he goes around asking
everybody. They say Florida, Colorado, Missouri, and then he's like,
okay, those are good, I'lltake that. And then he goes to
Uh. First he kills bow Hi. He just kills Hi. Joe,
Joel and Sammy and Lee got outof the car. They hid behind like
(54:37):
an They hid behind some sort ofwall and they zoomed in saw what they
saw, and Lee and Jesse werelike, we're going in, like we
have to go get them, andTony was like, yeah, I'm coming
to and then Sammy was like, fuck no, that's that's walking into They're
gonna shoot us on site, likewe are wearing press tags and like even
(54:57):
though that means that like we shouldn'tbe in the line of fire, well
not not that they do right, more like her a sea thing, Yeah,
don't try try to try to notshoot these people, yea, and
yeah, so Lee, sorry,Sammy stayed back. Lee, Joel,
and Tony walk on down try toreason with these guys, and Joel's like,
(55:22):
these are my colleagues, Like we'repressed, like we're just trying to
report on this, like we're justpassing through like we're going to DC and
this this militia man played by JessePlemons just goes, oh that that's your
colleague. This is your colleague.Bang shoots bo High dead and unfortunately this
(55:45):
is another building block for Jesse becausethen Sammy has a super badass moment and
when he sees ship start to goawry, what does he do? He
hops in the driver's seat and heruns over these motherfuckers before they shoot Jesse
and before they shoot anyone else,or actually not before they shoot anyone else,
(56:07):
because Tony unfortunately met his his hisunfortunate and when he told the Jesse
Plemans militia man that he was ahung he was from Hong Kong and boom
boom gone there. And then Sammypulls up skirts through hits the two that
(56:35):
were capturing Uh Jesse and bow Hi. Jesse actually gets knocked into the pit
of bodies, and that was sohard to watch because for so many reasons.
Man, the bodies moving underneath herlike haunting, like anyway, they
(56:58):
escape and this is a big turnfor all of them because this has been
like their their own personal again theBill right just with with death. And
then we find out that Sammy actuallyunfortunately got shot because and I didn't.
(57:19):
So when we when it was firstrevealed, I was like, when did
he get shot? Like how didthis happen? And then I've remembered is
that once they pulled Jesse out ofthe pit and everyone got back in the
car, there was one guy,the guy operating the dump truck correct got
out, grabbed a gun and shotat the car, shot at the car
a couple of times, and youknow, it looked like none of the
(57:43):
shots were good, and unfortunately onemust have gone through the door and took
our poor Sammy. So they endup putting him in the back to try
and you know, take care ofhim as much as possible. But I'm
fortunately he does not make it.And that was like, that was big
(58:05):
for Jesse, I'm sure, becauseyou know, some even though they had
only known each other for a coupleof days, it's still like, wow,
like I just watched somebody die rightnext to me. So Sammy didn't
die right away, but and Ican't not mention that right before they put
him bleeding out in the back seat, Jesse threw upon herself. They all
(58:28):
like it was a it was amusic playing in the background. We could
not hear what was happening on screenmoment where Joel and Jesse are just freaking
the fuck out about what just happenedbecause they're like, oh my god,
we almost just died. And Jessegets sick because I'm sure all of that
(58:49):
anxiety and all of that stress wasjust too much for her and body to
handle. And Joel was friends withTony and Bohi, and so he just
watched two of his friends just getslaughtered and Sammy unfortunately dies as well.
Yeah, but in a beautiful scenewhere they're driving through really top tier stuff.
(59:17):
Later on, you know, they'restill driving through on their way to
DC and they drive through like theforest fire essentially, yeahs And just a
poor side effect of war is that, you know, when bombs go off
near trees, trees will catch onfire. So that just goes to show
(59:38):
the further negative effects of war andstuff and just how truly devastating it can
be. It was like opposite snow. Yeah, it was as falling,
hauntingly beautiful scene of the car drivingthrough and the the ash glistening. Yeah,
(59:58):
the the embers really just pass like, oh my god. And there
was there was a beautiful shot ofSammy his head up against the window and
raising a hand and like not stroking, but like you know, wiping against
the window, like, oh thisis beautiful. And then the next shot
we see is him slumped, justdead, just emotionless. So what a
(01:00:22):
beautiful send off. And in thatmoment they also find themselves at a massive
base of the Western Front. Yes, yeah, there is the Western Western
Front or forces Western Forces. Yeah, wow, I'm thinking all quiet on
(01:00:43):
the Western Front with the Western Forces. They stumble upon a huge, huge
base full of tanks, trucks, helicopters, soldiers, the likes of them.
This was this was when the Itwas just like a two minute scene
of helicopter flying. Yeah, andthe only sound you heard is is the
the rudders, the the blades, the blades of a helicopter. Just it
(01:01:08):
was just so loud for so long. And they they find out when they
get there that they meet two otherjournalists friends there. They meet two other
journalists there, and they find outthat they they're they're going in and they're
going in right now. They theylearned that the w F forces had made
(01:01:32):
it to d C before them, and so Joel was freaking out, you
know, going on a little binge, you know, just holding walking around
holding the bottle of vodka and andchain smoking SIGs, just being like,
we we didn't do it, Yeahwe could, we didn't get there in
time. They they wanted to gettheir story and their picture of the president
(01:01:53):
before the forces got there, andunfortunately they they got there first, and
it was literally the entirety of them, and so in a mass, mass
movement from that base. Absolutely, you know, it was many units,
(01:02:14):
but it was to see the waythey hooked up these the military cars to
the massive helicopters and took them andand were moving insanity in a in just
such a large group. It was. It was actually a pilgrimage. Yeah,
truly. And then I think thisbrings us to the to the massive
(01:02:37):
culmination of the movie is getting tod C. They got they got to
d C, and it is anabsolute fucking ship the war zone that it
became, and like it was justabsolutely Olympus had fallen guy, and just
(01:02:59):
the the amount, the sheer amountof firepower that the WF had brought,
just an unnumerable number of tanks andheavy armored cars and SUV's and everyone's fully
suited up. They had been referencingDC as the front lines throughout the whole
(01:03:22):
movie, and I was like,oh, yeah, like that's where like
the that's where a lot of fightingis happening. Yeah. Sure, But
then they show it and I'm like, they're blowing up the Lincoln moment.
They yeah, they the the firefightthere was insane. And then it's it's
just some gunfire, and then yousee a dude step out with the RPG
(01:03:43):
and and fire at the Lincoln Memorialand then the helicopter flags over the reflecting
pool. Yeah, the Washington Yeah, like, are you fucking joking me?
And so they pull up to thegate of the White House to the
new heavily armored like like there waslike cement walls and just the the absolute
(01:04:06):
unit of a steel door that wasthere. They pull up the whole crew
and they're ready to now. Andand this is something we wanted to touch
upon too, is anytime they weretaking photos in a active war zone the
the way like I guess I'm I'mhaving a hard time fathoming like how the
(01:04:32):
soldiers would treat the press. Yeah, that like that relationship was very interesting
to see. At the different warzones that they went into and the different
flights they got in, they theytreated for the most part like they were
a part of the team. Likethey would be like hold and then go,
(01:04:54):
go go, used all the handsignals. They knew what they were,
they knew exactly what they were talkingabout. They were on the same
page. But of course they thepress had to follow the orders correct.
They had to follow the orders notonly to keep them safe, but to
not get in the way, rightand to keep you know, the war
zone the action, Yeah, warZoneah, yeah, that, And then
(01:05:17):
there were other moments where they werelike, get out of our fucking way,
don't get our don't get in ourway, which is such an interesting
well, that only moment happened atthe very end. But even still,
it's like, I think that's becauseof it was just the culmination of it.
Yeah, fair enough, And sobecause literally, at least what I
(01:05:39):
remember is quite literally up until thatone moment when they finally breach and get
into the White House. Yeah, and it was so wild. But when
they break down the door, amass movement of humbies, not humvies,
the cavalcades, the presidential cavalcades, make their way at the gate. They
(01:06:02):
think they see the president get in, and they did the fucking bait and
switch. Yep, they did bait. They tried to pull one, they
tried to pull a fast one. They they sent out a bunch of the
cavalcades out and to get through thedoor. They all crash cause of distraction,
and the militia just tears them,to tear them to them to pieces,
(01:06:25):
and the reporters, the press, they're sitting there like the President's not
there. They knew it, theyknew it well before there before the w
R. So while fucking the militiais blowing up the cavalcades, the press
are running into the into the fuckingwhite house. White House. You know
why because they'll do anything for theshot. Because they'll do anything, anything
(01:06:48):
for the shot. And you woulddo it too, for a check exactly.
And they they pull up, themilitia's not far behind them. That's
when they say, don't get inthe way, and they they push forward,
militia front, the press in theback, per usual, and they
run into the press room, breakingdown the dungeon doors, truly, and
(01:07:11):
they they meet with the publicist orthe one of the one of the secretaries,
Yeah, someone someone who worked closewith the president, and she's like,
we would like to negotiate the surrenderof the president for his safety and
the transfer of him. But theWF they didn't want terms. They just
(01:07:32):
wanted him. They were so itwas they take her out very ely at
that point. She was just intheir way and all they have to do
is just push a little further, and they are getting deeper and deeper into
the White House to the point wherethey are right outside the Oval They are
they are right outside the Oval Office, and they are actively fighting the last
(01:07:56):
few secret surviving Secret Service who areputting and giving their lives to hopefully try
and save the President. And andthen you know where I'm going. So
we push on to right right outsidelike one last hallway. They clear it
out, and there's just a fewguys holding down the Oval Office, assuming
(01:08:23):
the President is hiding the fetal positionunder his desk. And what does Jesse
do. She runs in the middleof the hallway to get the shot.
An empty hallway, an empty hallway, And as Jesse is taking a shot
or two, a picture or two, a Secret Service member peeks out and
(01:08:46):
starts shooting. And in that moment, in that moment, our dear leading
lady, of course, does whatany good hero would do when they're patawan
when there uh uh not fellowship apprenticeis the word I was looking for.
When they're they're chosen one is inperil, Lee jumps out and and and
(01:09:15):
I know why it happened the wayit did, because of how it was
choreographed for how it was written. But man, in real life, if
you're running that way, you're grabbingthem and you're keep going Yeah, but
what did Lee do? She's justpushed, just pushed her to the ground,
turning her back to the Oval office. And and then we see Jesse
(01:09:39):
put laying down on the ground lookingup at Lee and she grabs her camera,
her hero standing over her. Thisis a great moment. They're in
the heat of it all. Takea picture. But what happens, Beef?
What happens Ethan? Lee unfortunately takesa hailstorm of bullets to the back,
the one part where she wasn't wearinga vest? Mind you right?
(01:10:02):
If how dare Lee be? So? What's hypocritical to tell Jesse to where
kevlar? But then not kevlar herself? And Jesse takes these haunting pictures just
as Lee gets falling down. Ohmy god, whenever Lee would go into
(01:10:29):
like her stoic panic attacking mode, did you notice the like iris effects,
iris effect that would be around theher face specifically, And then when Lee
dies at the very end, Jessenow has the Irish effect. My jaws
(01:10:51):
dropped. I'm glad you brought becauseI did notice dropped because like the just
the the relation between the like theyhad very different upbringings, they had very
different lifestyles up until that point. But they they're gonna do the same exact
thing. Hmm. They're gonna havethe same exact feelings and the same exact
emotions toward this and it's all forthe good of what it stands for.
(01:11:15):
The way they showed that connection andthe sharing of those feelings, Yes,
through that cool camera IRIS effect.I don't know exactly what it's called,
but I'm gonna call it an iriseffect. And if you go see the
movie you'll know exactly what I mean. It almost looks like three D but
with not right. Yeah, itwas certainly a beautiful tool that they used.
(01:11:43):
Really lended to the visuals of thismovie, yes, which had so
many good shots and god, itwas so good. And that is unfortunately
the end of Lee. And thenthey make their way into the Oval office
where they are dragging Nick Offerman thefeet. But sorry, but don't you
(01:12:05):
can't steamroll over what happens Just beforethat, Lee falls dead onto Jesse and
what does Jesse do? She shakesit off, She gets she gets Lee
doesn't look at her doesn't. Well, she she does, but Lee gets
(01:12:30):
up and keeps going because she madea promise to Lee. They're sorry.
Jesse gets up and keeps going becauseshe made a promise to Lee that she
would never make that mistake again, that mistake being to not take the picture
because going back to the car washis Jesse was so shaken that she never
(01:12:53):
picked up her camera at that moment. And then when they were driving past
it uh and keep going in thecar, Jesse was so upset with herself
because she didn't take a picture. So then she keeps her promise to her
hero, and even when her heromeets their end, Jesse keeps keeps on,
(01:13:15):
keeping on. That is her finaltransformation building blocked that completes her to
build the character building her moment asthe now stoic, hardened photographer. Yeah,
that's really when the rookie became aveteran exactly. And so at that
(01:13:36):
moment, that's when they're grabbing Yes, oh my god, And it was
so funny to see them burst intothat Oval office and to grab Nick Offerman
as he is the president is holdingon to his desk, the last thing
he has, and they literally riphim away from it, and before the
(01:13:56):
militia even aim their guns at thepresident, Joel stands up and says,
wait, wait, wait, saysI need a quote. I need a
quote. What a hard line. And the President has nothing else to say
other than please don't let them killme. And then Jesse walks in and
(01:14:20):
then Joel is satisfied with that quote. As a journalist, I'd be satisfied
with that quote. What a Oh, what a hard moment, what a
good moment. Jesse raises her camera, points and shoots at the exact moment
the militia pulled the trigger, andthat is the end of the movie.
(01:14:41):
And bam, white screen, beautifulending. And I'm really I'm really glad
that's how it ended me too.I think it was again, the build
was perfect because that's what we werelooking forward to the whole time. I
mean, some of us might belooking forward to it, but the whole
(01:15:01):
kill the president, Kill the president, Kill the president. FBI agents,
if you're listening, sorry, sorry, we're talking about civil war war,
not the actual president. My nameis not Robbie Seey, his name is
not No. Who are they?I have no idea? And yeah,
(01:15:23):
you're so right that we had talkedabout like the different ways it could have
ended, and I think that wasdefinitely the way it had That was the
way it had to end, youknow. It was the perfect ending to
the perfect build. And it wasso satisfactory. Oh my god. And
(01:15:44):
then the cherry on top, andso at the end it goes to a
white screen. But then what happens. You watch a photo develop. Not
only is that the cherry on topof the motifs and of the true meaning
of the movie, but it's aphoto of like five or six of the
WF thumbs up smiling over the bodyof the president. And it was crazy,
(01:16:13):
unbelievable. Oh my god, whata dense movie, what a good
movie. I we said so much, but I am still speechless. I
know, I can't. I can'teven culminate everything that we just talked about
into into a few words. Andthen of course we didn't talk about everything.
So again, we urge you togo see the movie so so so
(01:16:35):
much, and I feel like ifI were to watch it a second time,
i'd see more. Do you wantto go see it again? Yeah?
Absolutely? Just a twenty four onceagain coming in hot with an amazing,
amazing film, banger after banger,Alex Garland shout out Alex Garling and
(01:17:00):
directing, and just overall like theperformances on the cast, like great cast.
It was never there was never adull moment. It was never a
moment where I was like, oh, these people have no idea how to
act. Like, No, itwas. It was real, it was
raw, it was it was familiar. I think that's kind of what killed
me about it was it was soclose to home. Yeah, that I
(01:17:26):
could watch that film and be like, I've seen that place before and it's
up in flames because there's a civilwar going on, and I mean that's
you know, going into what werethey trying to make, you know,
to bring up that question, isthat they were trying to make something about
a real possibility because the movie it'sabout a bad third term president and you
(01:17:55):
know, not to say that artimitates life, but it might start to
it. The message of us beingour own demise. Yeah, I think
was the biggest thing that I tookaway. And it actually came out right
around the time a little TV showcalled Fallout premiered on Prime Video based on
(01:18:20):
the video games of the same name, where it's Americans causing their own demise.
Yeah, they are hurting themselves. And I think a lot of films
like Critique that in such a beautifulway to where it's not like an obvious
(01:18:45):
like you know, call out it. They do it in such a diplomatic
way that is just so creative andbeautiful, and it can be done in
such a way where it almost hasmore of an impact than somebody just going
out and saying it, you know. Of course, you know movies like
Godzilla and the Fallout series and nowCivil War, where you know, those
(01:19:08):
commentaries are very evident. Phenomenal movie, phenomenal writing, cast was amazing,
the special effects, like the verypractical, everything was very practical, did
not look like much cgi if atall, very very real things happening,
(01:19:30):
which was very very cool to see. And the message and the story I
think everybody can take away a littlebit. I hope people go out of
this movie thinking a little bit moreabout maybe their own decisions and their own
thinking about even just like taking thingsfor granted, like even just sitting back
(01:19:53):
and being like I'm not gonna I'mnot gonna be selfish, I'm gonna I'm
gonna actually enjoy life and I'm notgonna be you know, I'm not gonna
be so quick to problems, youknow, to hate. Yeah, yeah,
phenomenal, phenomenal movie, really goodmovie. It's only been out for
(01:20:15):
a couple of days. So no, we have no me minute unfortunately.
Yeah, I can't, but can'tmake a lot of means yet. So
please go watch a trailer, Gowatch Civil War in theaters. It will
not be the same on a streamingservice, even with surround sound. You
(01:20:36):
have to see this movie in thetheater and see it on the big screen.
Yeah, and I think that justabout does it. But yeah,
so I have one more thing I'mgonna say, please, and I'm gonna
add it in later future. Ethanif you're hearing, is add this to
like around like the middle to lateof the actual talking about the movie.
(01:21:00):
Okay, all right, I thinkthat was a great episode. This is
