Speaker 1 (00:05):
Mmm, Hello, Hello, Hello, how you going?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
How are you doing? What it do? My b baby?
You know that banger review by now you know as
the intro, the sound of the song, the theme to
the College Football Function. Thank you for tuning in. If
this is the first time listening to the College Football Function,
I am formally introducing myself. I go by the name

(00:51):
of cm AKA because Mike A k A. Cm funk
aka mister still your Grandma, the profess they're seeing him,
the host that knows the most about college football, the
guy that just knows his NCAA, and the host of
the College Football Function. How you doing? Sit back, tune in,

(01:11):
and let's have ourselves a really good show. Thank you
for listening yet again, still in off season mode. I
hope you had a wonderful and safe fourth of July.
Just you know, like I said, this is going to
be a weekly thing. If you've just now started listening,
if you're a new listener up until college you know,

(01:34):
until the actual season starts, you know, they'll be two
a week. You know, they'll be the review and the
preview show. So but the summertime, we're just looking for filler,
you know, we're just looking for something to stay relevant. Yes,
I do believe this is relevant. We're looking at all

(01:55):
these teams's upcoming schedule and we're going back in time
a little bit and looking at how they ended their season.
You know, let's say, hey, they went eleven and three
last year, played in a conference championship. Or you can
go back a few more weeks and talk about the
national championship. You know, I did the Ohio State buck

(02:17):
guys in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. We're getting closer
and closer. Like I said, we just went through fourth
to July. It feels like June went by really really fast.
I had my you know, family reunion slash vacation in June,
a lot of birthdays, a lot of things went on
in June, and then next thing, you know, we're through

(02:38):
fourth of July. Like I said, I hope you had
a great fourth of July. I didn't went to the
fourth of July parade that we have in our town,
and you know, it's a couple of miles long, and
you know, got to see all the cool stuff. I
was in the precursor to food poisoning. So yeah, yeah,

(03:00):
right after the parade, I started feeling really crappy, and
you know what happens with food poisoning, you know, you
get it out of both ends. And I had to
pretty much turn down a really awesome opportunity to go
to a Fourth of July party that night and just
ended up just being on the toilet or in my
bed for all of Fourth of July and then had

(03:23):
to turn around and go to work July fifth in
the morning. So yeah, I'm sure if you had a
thought you had a bad Fourth of July, you know,
mine's up there with you, just so you know. But
like I said, it was a good time though. Don't
get me wrong. The parade was great and all I
got to hear a whole lot of fireworks all night,

(03:43):
you know, that was the thing too. But like I said,
I hope you enjoyed yourself. I hope you're enjoying your summer.
I know, summer is not for the week, It is
not for the meek. It's officially summer here in Lubbock
where I live. You know, the rain has really started
to dwindle down. This is probably the greenest summer I've

(04:07):
ever recalled in my you know, long ear life, you know,
well over thirty five years and the sun's really starting
to come out, you know, and with humidity, it's icky,
it's sticky, and it's officially here now. Now my yard
is getting out of control, having a mow it more

(04:27):
and more often. But I think we're getting back to
normal summer here. And like I said, I hope you're
enjoying yourself. Thank you for tuning in. Got another great
episode for you. Now, this one's probably not going to
catch your eye. This one's probably not going to be

(04:49):
a show that a lot of people are gonna clamor
for or rush to download or rush to their Patreon
to listen to. But I still feel these two teams
need to be talked about. You know. Of course we're
talking about the Iowa State Cyclones out of the Big
Twelve Conference, and we're talking about the SMU Mustangs out

(05:10):
of the ACC conference. Now they're these two patterns, these
two teams that kind of I'm comparing themselves to and
putting them together. These are both teams had great years.
You know, SMU probably better of a year than Iowa State.
I think it's a pretty foregone conclusion most of the

(05:34):
time that Iowa State it's a pretty good team in
the Big Twelve. It seems like every single year they're
up contending for Big Twelve championships, and last year was
no exception. They have a great coach in Matt Campbell,
and you know it ended up their year eleven and three,
but like I said, got to their conference championship game

(05:55):
and just kind of got rolled by. Arizona State had
a great year the exact same record eleven and three,
led by led by sorry threat Lashly had a great
year as well, then went to their conference championship game
and their first year by the way in the SMU

(06:17):
Mustangs and the ACC and god beat you know, not
by much though to you know, Clemson in that ACC
championship game and I think they only lost by three.
So can these two teams keep it up? You know,
winning double digit games consecutively over and over again definitely

(06:37):
get you respect and put you in the talks of
competing for your conference and possibly making that College Football
Playoff like SMU got to I which they kind of
missed out on that, But you know, it is what
it is with only twelve you know, spots in the

(06:57):
College Football Playoff. Of them, you can honestly say, out
of the twelve six are gonna go Big ten in SEC.
I mean you can pretty much nod your head, or
you can go four of each going to the College
Football Playoff. That leaves only four spots left. You know,
a Boise State got in, and then that leaves three

(07:20):
spots and then two Big twelve or two ACC and
one Big twelve. And that was just Arizona State last year.
So expansion is being talked about. I don't know if
anybody knows about that. It took a long time to
get to four, you know, a four team playoff, you know,
for the last ten years. Took a long time for that,

(07:41):
and then we finally got to this twelve team playoff
and now it's being talked about sixteen. Now would it
bother me any for the college football Playoff to go
to sixteen? I don't think so. But I don't think
we should ever go outside of sixteen. I don't think

(08:02):
anybody outside of that top sixteen should even be allowed
to play in that conference or in the college football Playoffs.
So it's gonna be good for the sport when they
eventually do it, because it's going to happen. You know,
teams like the SEC and teams like the Big Ten
feel like they should take most of the spots, and

(08:25):
in a way I agree, But in a way I'm going, well,
you know, some of these littler conferences are kind of going, hey,
you know, we're pretty good too, you know, and they
just are entitled to four spots, you know what I'm saying.
So it's gonna be interesting. Like I said, college football
so deep and thrilling right now, you know, with the

(08:49):
NIL transfer portal, so many cool things going on in
college football, and like I said, it's only gonna get more,
more and more interesting. But that's enough of that. Let's
talk about out these two teams. We're going to talk
about Iowa State Cyclones out of the Big Twelve. Like
I said, went to the conference championship game last year

(09:11):
in the Big Twelve, played the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Looked really bad. I mean, I'm not gonna, you know,
bash them completely, but you could tell who the best
team was. And you know, usually with conference championship games,
you don't usually see blowouts. You see two equally matched teams,

(09:33):
you know, two teams that may have already played earlier
in the year. But you don't see the pure a
pure dominant team come out like Arizona State did. I mean, golly,
it looked like cam Skataboo was a god amongst men
in that game. And I always State just looked out
classed for about three quarters of that game. So if

(09:54):
you want to go back and look at, you know,
a possible a team that you know is looking forward
to this twenty twenty five twenty twenty six year, it
definitely has to be that. I would state Cyclones. Matt Campbell,
like I said, is their head coach, one of the
better head coaches. Of course in at the Big twelve,
you could probably put him in the top two, top

(10:15):
three in that conference, and then to shoot, I put
him in the top fifteen, maybe even top ten of
coaches in the league. I mean, this is a guy
that a lot of years, the NFL loses coaches, like
they do every single year, three or four every year. Right,
this guy gets talked about he runs in NFL style,

(10:39):
uh you know business. I mean, that's exactly why he
gets talked about a lot moving up. And so we've
seen it before. We've seen college coaches go up in
the league and sometimes do good, sometimes don't do bad.
But that's neither here nor there. But Matt Campbell is
still a great coach. Like I said one eleven and
three last year, lost at home to the Texas Tech

(11:03):
Red Raiders, went to Kansas and lost definitely a head
scratching loss there, and then of course lost to Arizona
State down there in Dallas in the Big twelve Championship game.
But put a nice bow on the end of their
season last year and beat the Miami Hurricanes in their
bowl game. I do believe that was the Pop Tarts Bowl.

(11:25):
Becoming one of my favorite poles. I mean, it's in
the college football game now. It's so cool. I mean,
I just love how college football has just grown and
gotten a little crazy. And then don't take itself too seriously,
you know what I mean. But yeah, let's talk about
Iowa State schedule. Lucky, luckily for Iowa State, they get

(11:47):
that week zero opening week game and it's a doozy
August twenty third. You know, this goes down as weak zero.
I think this is one of those games going to
be played outside of the United States, and it's a
like I say, this is a doozy, this is farmageddon.
They're playing Kansas State, their conference rivals. I said, they

(12:11):
call it Farmageddon. It's just two teams that if they
took their pads and their helmets off and switched, you
wouldn't tell the difference. They both, you know, both blue collar,
you know, farming communities in Iowa State and in Kansas State,

(12:32):
same kind of beliefs, kind of play the same kind
of style football. But it's a really good rivalry game.
It's usually one of the last games of the season
when these two teams play, but this year it starts
their year. And like I said, this is I can't wait.
I mean, yeah, a Georgia Tech in Florida State to

(12:53):
open the season last year was great, but we saw
something that's never happened. You know, Florida State get dominated,
a top ten preseason dominated team get blown out by
Georgia Tech. You know, a team that a lot of
people are talking about Florida State being going into the
twenty twenty five season, that their national championship contenders, and

(13:18):
then they go out and ship the bad week zero. Now,
who's to say that one of these two teams does
the same thing. Now it's hard to pick. Yeah, before
we get you know, into their schedule, this team can

(13:39):
go twelve and zho, I have did the Arizona State
Sun doubles already and I always State does get that
revenge against those Sun doubles November first. So yeah, this
team can go eleven or twelve and oh sorry, And
you know that's tough. Like I said, this is a

(14:04):
rivalry game. Anything can happen neutral site. You know what,
I like k State. I've always had a soft spot
for Kansas State, A big Bill Snyder fan, a lot
of really good players. Get me out of ky State.
So Kay State August twenty third, Week zero, get the

(14:24):
win against Iowa State August thirtieth. You know, technically week one,
South Dakota come home. You know from that possible you know,
cross the world trip. I could be in Dublin, it
could be in Germany. I really don't know where kse
State and Iowa State are playing that Week zero game.

(14:45):
But get to come home. Welcome in South Dakota, chack
of loopes. I want to say something along those lines.
But the loss you know the week before to either
Kaya State Wildcats, a conference loss, to art your season
with a conference game, you know, it's a lick your wounds,
get right beat up on South Dakota August thirtieth, September sixth, Oh,

(15:10):
here we go, Welcome in Iowa. The Hawkeys rivalry game
Iowa Iowa State. It's the battle for the Syhawk Trophy.
It's been a little one way like lately. You know.
I know Iowa State did it beat Iowa last year,
but it always seemed like every year Iowa would just

(15:34):
have Iowa State's number. Just their style of play just
really complicates you. It brings you back to earth. It
makes you uncomfortable playing a team with solid defense, play
sound fundamentally. That's what I think of when I think
over the Iowa States of the world, or the Iowa's

(15:56):
of the world, sorry, and the Kansas States of the world.
They're just monotonous, like they're meticulous. I mean monotonous. I
don't know, maybe a little that, but real tough team. Now,
can they go to in a row these Iowa State
side clones against Iowa I don't know. And that's tough. Yeah,

(16:27):
I don't see the only time Yeah, I don't know.
And this is in Iowa State. I get it, but
I don't know. Something tells me Iowa State don't beat
Iowa two times in a row very often. So give
me the l right there not a good look for
Iowa State starting their year one and two. September thirteenth,

(16:48):
go to Arkansas State. I do believe that is the
red Wolves kind of a head scratching game. Usually when
you play a non conference schedule, you they come to you.
You know what I'm saying, Like you say, hey, here's
seven hundred and fifty thousand, here's a one point two million,

(17:09):
here's one point six million, whatever, come to my town,
come to my stadium, and get your butt kicked. Now,
last year, we all know how that worked, right and
I you went down to Indiana. I wouldn't say go down,
but went to you know, Indiana and beat the Notre
Dame fighting Irish and got a check. I mean that

(17:32):
check tasted even sweeter right when that coach was walking
into the athletic director's office, you know, after beating one
of the best teams in the country, and little did
we know that team would go on and play for
a national championship later that year. So great when there
it is. But September thirteenth, like I said, these Iowas
say cyclones go to Arkansas State. I think that's one

(17:54):
of those funky I think I have one of those
funky fields. It's like red or it's black or something.
But you know the loss the week before to Iowa
September sixth, you know in that Syhawk, you know battle,
they lost that one Hiway, So they're gonna go to
Arkansas State and beat the Red Wolves September thirteenth. Here

(18:16):
we go. September twentieth is their bye. Since their season
started earlier, they're technically their seasons a little longer, so
they're technically going to get three byes this their season.
You see that with the week zeros every so often
they get technically three byes since their season starts a
week early, and there's their first one September twentieth, goodbye.

(18:40):
Looks like they're two and two. Kind of need to
get their stuff together going into conference season September twenty seventh. Yes,
like I said, conference season starts as a start. Next
to this game, you welcome in the Arizona Wildcats. Another
team don't really know much about. If A Fied is

(19:00):
not there anymore, Toto McMillan is not there anymore, Yeah,
I did. Don't really know what they did in the offseason,
not a team I'm expecting a whole lot from now.
If you're an Arizona's Arizona fan, you were probably going

(19:21):
appreciate that. Seem we don't want any recognition, We don't
want any any limelight put on us. We want to
be the Arizona State of last year. So it seems
like it happened a lot last year. You know, teams
like s ME, Arizona State, and Indiana, you know all
these teams, Georgia Tech. You had come to mind that

(19:41):
just kind of came out of nowhere, weren't expected to
do a whole lot and had a great year. Arizona
could be one of those teams. But the week off before,
you know, with that buye for Iowa State. A good coach,
they get teams ready in two weeks, so easy win
right there. September twenty seventh, Welcome in Zona. October fourth,

(20:02):
take a road trip to Cincinnati to play the Bearcats.
Yet again, like I said, another conference game. Cincinnati kind
of in that pile of teams that are probably going
to finish in the bottom half of the Big Twelve.
But then again, we don't know. Like I said about

(20:23):
the Big Twelve conference, it's not a top driven conference.
There's not five or six great teams. There's probably about
five or six good at teams and then some question marks.
I mean, is Vanderbilt gonna upset anybody in the SEC
this year? We don't really know. Is Mississippi State can

(20:45):
have a good year in the SEC? We don't really know.
But you can always kind of bet on the you know,
Alabama's to LSU's, you know, all the usual characters, the
Georgia's and the Texas right that they're going to be
competing for an SEC championship. You just see it every year.
Now the Big Twelve, you don't especially with the guys

(21:08):
like Texas and oh you going off to green your
pastures to you know, cash more checks. The Big Twell's
wide open, ken Arizona State repeat, can a team like
Baylor TCU. There is so many good teams in the
Big twelve that you really just don't know. And you
gotta long Cincinnati in there with it. But give me

(21:29):
the coach. I don't think Cincinnati has been that good
since Luke Fickle left. You know, the Desmond Ritter years
and all that all that good you know years that
they had in Cincinnati. It's it's kind of gone away.
You know, Luke Fickle is not walking through that door.
You know, he is a long way away in Wisconsin,

(21:50):
and it just seems like Cincinnati's just kind of just
there taking up space. No offense to the Bearcats, but yeah,
you know you and you, your time in football in
the Big twelve is not been very loud. You've been
pretty quiet, to say the least. October eleventh at Colorado. Yeah,
that's a tough one. I think that has potential to

(22:11):
be a real knockout, drackout fight. I'm not sure if
these two teams played last year. With the new Big
Twelve and all the new teams coming in and bigger conferences,
to say the least, there's gonna be years where you
don't play a team but every three years, maybe even
every four heck, you never know. But Iowa State Colorado,

(22:38):
that's tough. I know, I sound so much like a hater.
I just Colorado, man, their backs are gonna be against
the wall this year. That's all I can say. October
eleventh at Colorado, Aloway State goes on the road and
beast the buff October eighteenth, second bye. It's a really

(23:01):
good bye three Conference games sandwiched between week five and
this week nine bye, So that's a good time. And
you went three and zero during that little stretch between buys.
So let's go into the back half of their schedule.
October twenty fifth. Here we go. Welcome in Big b YU.

(23:21):
Definitely another team I'm keeping my eyes on and I'm
keeping very very close to me because they're a team
I think recruits well, plays well, they fit in the
Big twelve. They kind of have that Case State Iowa
State type energy that you know, they don't beat themselves up.

(23:42):
They could be high flying, YadA, YadA, YadA. But Jake
Rhetz laugh thing about BYU worries me a little bit.
I think this was a team that an honest person
would say, I put them in the top half of
the Big twelve. I put them as a contender to
win in the Big twelve this year. And that's BYU.

(24:04):
Great coach. Like I said, they do everything right at BYU.
But the whole j Gretz last thing really nervous makes
me nervous. But the week before Iowa State had to buy.
So I'm gonna give them a win because they're welcoming
in BYU October twenty fifth, So that's a win for
the Cyclones. November first, Welcome in Arizona State. Yeah got

(24:30):
that already, I did, Arizona State. I said that was
a revenge game, you know for Iowa State, welcoming in
the conference champion into their house, and that Arizona State
team's not gonna look like the Arizona State team from
last year. You know, Cam Skataboo is wearing the badge.
You know, he's wearing the NFL logo on his chest

(24:52):
this coming up football year. Can they have success back
to back? Absolutely good coaches as well. Jordan Tyson is
a hell of a receiver for the Sun Devils and
they still have Sam Levitt. So you have a good
coming back coach, you have a good, you know, accomplished
quarterback coming back, you have a star wide receiver. Disgui's

(25:16):
the limit for Arizona State. But I gave the revenge
factor to Iowa State. They're welcoming in Arizona State. So
the Cyclones get to win November first, November eighth, take
a road trip to TCU. Uh. Definitely another team I'm
keeping my eyes on. Just head scratching team, to be honest, right,

(25:40):
you know, you can say, man, that TCU team had
a great year a couple of years ago and you know,
played in the National Championship. Yeah, we know how that
game ended. But you know, great year, you know, and
I think it was sunny Dyke's his first year or
maybe even second year you're coaching TCU, and then all

(26:01):
of a sudden like TCU's kind of disappeared. Right, So
what's gonna happen with with this TCU team. I don't
really don't know, but yeah, I don't know. Something just
tells me that that's a trap game. Yeah. Then yeah

(26:24):
at TCU, I know it's not the hardest place to play.
M and G. Carter Stadium, But someone's gonna come out
of the woodwork, Like I said, someone's gonna come from
the ashes. Someone's gonna win a game they're not supposed
to win. Look at this Iowa State team last year.

(26:44):
They let Texas Tech come into their house towards the
end of the year and beat them. You know this
happens every single year. You lose a game you're not
supposed to lose, You win a game you're not supposed
to win too as well. Uh, that's just a big
twelve conference in a nutshell. So November eighth, I gotta
give these iosa Cyclones a loss at TCU. November fifteenth

(27:09):
is their last and final bye. Yet again, not bad.
They got four no three games between their October eighteenth
by they went two to one, and I think that's
a pretty good stretch of games right there. At October
twenty fifth through November fifteenth, you got BYU, a team

(27:29):
that really could contend for a Big twelve championship. You
got the reigning Big twelve champions in Arizona State, and
then you go to a place like Fort Worth and
play TCU. That's a tough little stretch that could be
one in two stretch, that could be in zero and
three stretch for a team like Iowa State. But going
to and one through that tough little area, that's pretty good.

(27:51):
November twenty second, Welcome in Kansas the Jayhawks, yet again,
a team I haven't really talked about. I think a
team that definitely didn't benefit a lot of preseason stuff
last year. Guys like Devin Neil, they got a lot
of preseason hype. They were definitely being talked about as

(28:13):
being a conference championship representative in Dallas, you know about
this time last year and kind of fell by the wayside,
you know, because they're getting a new stadium down there.
It's kind of ugly. To be honest, it's not really
blowing me away when I see some of the stuff
that they're doing. Kansas is just one of those teams.
They're a hardwood team as well. If it was at Kansas,

(28:37):
I give that the upset special. I put trap game
next to that. But the bye week before that's two
weeks to prepare for Kansas, and I got to give
it to a guy like Matt Campbell. They they just
don't lose those type of games when they have two
weeks to prepare for. You For twenty second, Kansas goes
into Cyclone Stadium and loses to the Kansas, or Kansas

(29:00):
goes into Iowa State and loses to the Cyclone. Sorry
a little confused there. November twenty ninth, take a road
trip to Stillwater to close out their season and play
the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Yet again. Had another team I
got a question mark next to. But I'm also very

(29:21):
weary of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This is a team
Mike Gundy's been around the big Twelve. He is the
longest tenured Big Twelve coach in that conference. Heck, he
is one of the longest tenured coaches in all of
college football. How do you believe he has been in
Oklahoma State since the new millennia? I want to say

(29:42):
around that time, maybe even in two thousand and two
or something. But he has been coaching the Oklahoma State
Cowboys for a long time. And then he's no slouch.
You know. Usually when the guy's been coaching, you know,
for more than ten years at one alma monitor, he's
usually doing great things. Now, that was the good. What

(30:05):
happened last year? Oklahoma State just kind of disappeared kind
of you know, did the Homer Simpson meme where he
just kind of sinks into the bush? I don't I
can't think of one Oklahoma State game last year that
comes to my mind, you know what I'm saying, Like
the Big twelve is just so deep, and with the

(30:28):
year like Oklahoma State had last year, with the year
like the Utah Utes didn't even talk about them had
last year. Two teams that you would probably say last
to lie, you probably say, hey, Mike Gundhy, you know,
Kyle Winningham, These two teams could play in Dallas, you know,

(30:48):
for a chance to go to the College Football Playoff,
and they just had bad years. It's crazy how college
football works, man. But yeah, I just I don't know.
I think Gundist might be on his way out, you know.

(31:11):
I say that now and you watch Oklahoma State has
a you know, a nine and three year, a ten
and two year, you know, plays for a conference championship
like he has before. It's it's it's always real quick
to jab somebody when they don't do normal what they
normally do. Olahoma State is a nine and ten win season,

(31:31):
damn near it seemed like every single year, and was
beating at Texas every once in a while, was beating
their big brother in Oklahoma every once in a while,
and sometimes playing for conference championships. And you would see
him in big time bowl games as well. So just
weird to see Oklahoma State had the year that they have,
That's all I got to say. But yeah, give me
the win. I Alway State goes to still Water and

(31:55):
gets the win at Oklahoma State against the Cowboys. Looks
like nine and three. I think that's respectable. Yeah, I mean,
nothing wrong with that, is it? Ten and two possible.
Sure that there's just too many games on here though

(32:16):
that really questioned Mark. You know that could go either way.
And then with some of the I don't know games,
you know, like the Cincinnatis, the Arizona's you never know
at TCU and know I gave them a loss there.
But Big twelves wide open. I mean it really really is.

(32:40):
And like I said, I don't know who's gonna come
out of it. You know, I hadn't even talked about Baylor.
That's a team that can come out of nowhere. With
David Randa definitely another guy. He's in that Brent Bennable's conversation,
you know down on the Big twelve. When where hey
man to start winning? You know, we need nine ten

(33:02):
guins out of either year or you know that seat,
you know it might be empty, if you know what
I'm saying. But yeah, this schedule is tough. With the
Farmer gieddon to open up the season, I know I
gave him a loss at that game there. Of course
there they're state enemies, you know in Iowa Hawkeyes and
that Ruvalry game Week three for them at Colorado is

(33:25):
a tough one be hosting guys like BYU Arizona State
in Kansas. But yeah, it's not the toughest schedule, but
there is some interesting games to say the least about
Iowa State. But yeah, I think the flour could be
eight and four and ceiling. Shoot, why not twelve and zero?

(33:51):
I'm not even kidding. Who's to say Iowa is gonna
be good, Case State's gonna be good, and TCU is
gonna be good? Right, So I mean that would give
them a perfect twelve zero season, you know, spot in Dallas, absolutely,
but yeah, time motel right, Like I said, this is
all for ships and giggles. And that was the Iowa
State Cyclones out of the big twelve. All right, let's

(34:13):
move over to ACC country, shall we, And let's talk
about the SMU much Dang's team yet again. Clump them
in that batch of teams that you know, set the
college football world on fire, came out of nowhere, came
out of left field, made their conference championship year one,

(34:33):
made the College Football Playoff year one. And that's the
SMU Mustangs. Rhett Lashly, like I said, I think he's
going into his third, fourth, fifth year, not real sure
doing his thing down there in SMU went eleven and
three last year, a lot like this team I just
talked about in Iowa State lost BYU and lost to

(34:55):
Clemson in the College football playoff, I mean Clemson in
the the conference championship, sorry, and then lost to Penn
State in the College Football playoffs. So their two losses
came two out of the three losses came one in
the conference championship and the other one, of course, in
the College football playoff. That Penn State game looked really

(35:17):
really bad. Penn State was playing at home. SMU came in.
You could tell which team has been there before, right,
You could tell which team was a little a little
in quick sand like they either they don't know how
much they bid off. They bit off where they can choose,

(35:38):
so to speak. But that was a good year, a
good foundational year. Now let's build on it. Let's go
out and instead of just competing for a conference championship,
let's go out and win one and get a buye
Who knows, you know, I think SMU is probably going
to be a preseason top twenty five team, kind of

(36:00):
like an Iowa State is. Like most of these teams
that I've been talking about, you know, all this whole
summer off season stuff. All ten twelve of them, however
many I've done so far, are more than likely going
to be top twenty five teams. And we'll see how
it ends. Right, it's not how it starts, it's how
it ends. But let's go through their schedule, shall we?

(36:24):
Before we start. Yeah, the best they can do is
eleven and one October eighteenth, they go to Clemson and lose.
Since I've already done Clemson and I said, you know,
SMUH comes to them, hat comes to their house, and
they lose, so I have to give SMU the loss.
So eleven and one's the best SMU can do. So

(36:46):
let's go through their schedule and see how many wins
that they are going to get. Us. Thirtieth is their
season's starting game. They welcome in East Texas A and M.
I have no idea. I don't know who Texas A
and M is. It would be cool to see them
play Texas A and M, but that's neither here nor there.

(37:06):
That is a dub easy when August thirtieth, September sixth,
welcome in Baylor the Baylor Bears. Yeah, Waco and Dallas
kind of close to each other. You've seen this type
of rivalry down in that area with you know, you
got a lumpa Texas A and M in there, even

(37:29):
lump of Texas in their Rice TCU as well. Some
of those teams at all are kind of right there.
You kind of see some hate hatred right there. So
welcome in Baylor kind of a rivalry game. Like I said,
Big twelve versus ACC. I mean, I really don't like

(37:53):
either one of them. I don't like s EMU and
I do not like Baylor, so I really care less,
but I guess it would look better on the Big
twelve to get, you know, a good Big twelve win
over a conference. So yeah, give me the l for SMU.

(38:17):
Welcome in in Baylor September sixth and lose to the
Baylor Bears September thirteenth at Montana State. Yeah again, kind
of a lot Like I Alowa State that just talked
about they take a weird, you know, non conference road trip,
right so at Montana State, I think that's the Bears,

(38:40):
Brown Bears or something like that. I don't know. I
put a trap next to it. But now that the
schedule just worked out, that's a win. They lost to
Baylor the week before. You can't go to at Montana
State and lose, you know, two consecutive games like that,
especially in your non conference season. So no, thank you.

(39:00):
Week four, September twentieth, here we go another rivalry game
at TCU. Yeah, that's I think anybody who's anybody that
lives in Texas knows SMU and TCU absolutely don't like
each other. Texas Christian versus Southern Methodist kind of two

(39:22):
conflicting religions kind of during certain things. But it's a
fight for the greater Dallas area. You know, who's gonna prosper,
you know. And it seems like SMU has been getting
a lot more talks about, especially this last year after

(39:43):
they did what they did, what they just did. But
TCU had always just kind of been big brother. But
give me little brother, man, give me the SMU Mustangs.
Right there, they lose to one big twelve team and
then come back and win against the other Big twelve.
It's at TCU, which is funny, and that's really not

(40:04):
that far of a trip for SBU to go to
TCU Fort Worth. So yeah, it's usually a good game
though too. You want to watch a really underrated rivalry
game watch September twentieth SMU at tc that's a pretty
good rivalry game down here in Texas. So give that
win this year to the SME Mustangs. Week five, September

(40:25):
twenty seventh is their first bye of the year. Goodbye.
You know. Two out of their first four weeks are
stiff competition. Baylor out of the Big twelve and of
course TCU out of the Big twelve. No talking disrespect
to East Texas A and M and at Montana State
week one and week three. But you should win those games,

(40:49):
going three and one and that conference in that non
conference schedule right there, impressive. Could be two and two,
you could lose to both of those Big twelve teams,
and you could be four. No, so there's no telling.
That's those are some good teams Week two and week four,
respectively for these SME Mustangs. Week five, September twenty seventh,

(41:13):
Like I said, that's their bye, goodbye. Sorry I lost
my track. Yeah, October fourth, we're moving on. Sorry all right,
Conference season starts got to start. Next to this Welcome
in Syracuse, the Orangeman. Here's the bad thing now, I
must say, you know, SMU, you know, here's your props.
You had a great year, double digit win, got to

(41:36):
play for a conference championship, got to make the College
Football Playoff. That's it. That's where it iss here. Here's
here's the cut and dry. That season's over. You're not
creeping up on anybody anymore. You know. The same goes
to in Arizona State. Same goes as some of those
great teams like I Indiana as well. Come to mind,

(41:58):
You're not creeping up on anybody anymore. They know who
you are and they're going to be ready for you.
You're not just going to breathe through your schedule like
you did last year. So remember that. That's all I
got to say. Either way, Syracuse goes down to Texas
and loses to these SMU Mustangs. Week seven, October eleventh,

(42:23):
Welcome in Stanford. Yeah, definitely a Arizona style team of
the Big twelve in the ACC ACC is a lot
like the Big twelve, A few good teams, mostly good teams,
not a whole lot of great teams. Yes, you could

(42:44):
say Clemson's a great team. Sure is SMU a great team?
I don't know, we'll see, right, but a lot of
question marks in that Conference as well, and you definitely
got a lump with Stanford annoying that question mark. But
coin flip to me, you know, someone has a gun

(43:06):
to my head. I have to pick SMU or our Stanford.
I go with the one that's had a better track record.
It's got to be rat Lashley and smme mustang. So
that's a when October eighteenth, like I said, take a
trip down to quote unquote Death Valley and play with
Clemson Tigers. They get their second loss of the year

(43:27):
right there, October eighteenth. I don't know, can't FSMU go
there and win? Sure, I just think it's not SMU's
time yet. I don't think Clemson is going anywhere anytime soon.
But then again, you got to punch the giant in

(43:48):
the mouth every once in a while, right, you have
to go after the top dog. If you want to
be the top dog. To be the best, you gotta
beat the best, right. So who's to say? But I
still think October eighteenth, that's going to be a really
good game SMU at Cleansing and potential Like the winner
of that game, you can pretty much say, book your
spot at Blank of America Stadium. You know, in Charlotte.

(44:12):
You pretty much can say that after October eighteenth, So
think about that. Week nine, October twenty fifth, take a
road trip to Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons kind of
a for some reason, I'm thinking it's kind of a
little tricky place to play. Might be a night game style.
I do have a trap game next to it. But

(44:33):
the week before losing to Clemson, Yeah, lick your wounds.
You practice harder, you study better, and you're not going
to go to Wake Forest and loose. So October twenty fifth,
SMU goes to wake and gets the win over the
Demon Deacons. Week ten, November one, welcome in the Miami Hurricanes. Yeah,

(44:57):
question mark as well. Like I said, came award or strepo.
There's stud tight end that got drafted. They're not walking
through those doors anymore, you know. And I don't think
what did Miami finished for last year? They still finished
ten and three, you know, a really good year for Miami.

(45:19):
They have a lot to prove too. Yeah, definitely these
two teams. Then you got to say, hey, who can
capitalize on on a really good year the year before
and go out and have another good year, Go out
and win another double digit you know, season. I don't know.

(45:41):
Something's telling me though that that's that's a loss, man. Yeah,
so I gotta give him my l right here. Okay,
that is November. First, they welcome in the Hurricanes. Hurricanes
come down to Texas, reck havoc on the Mustangs. Week eleven,
November eighth, take a road trip to Boston College. Yeah,

(46:05):
I don't really need to talk about that. You know,
could be a trap game, absolutely, but then again, I
don't really know. I don't always put trap games out
for you know, these teams that are going somewhere. I
don't always do that. You could have a trap game
at home. Hell, you never know. But at BC, with

(46:25):
the loss the week before to Miami, Yeah, give me
SMU November eighth, at BC November fifteenth is their last
buy that by couldn't come any better. That's a great
place for a buye you know. Yeah, I know, two
weeks before the season ends. But that's a tough stretch.

(46:47):
You know. They had their first by the twenty seventh
of September, so they pretty much went one two, three,
four five six six straight weeks competition of conference competition,
to say the least. Yeah, I went one two, three
four four and two through that stretch between by one

(47:10):
and by two, And who's to say they could go
five and one through that schedule, That little conference schedule
right there, Syracuse, Stanford at Clemson at Wake Home against
Miami at BC. Is there potential to have more than
two losses there as well? Sure, I don't know about Syracuse,
I don't know about Stanford, I don't know about Wake Forest,

(47:33):
and I don't know about Boston College. So yeah, there
could be another trap game somewhere in there, But a
good place for a bye. Like I said November twenty second,
welcome in the Louis the Cardinal. Yeah, yet again, I
think overperformed in the Cardinal last year. I think Tyler
Schuck was huge, you know, getting the Louis Vicardinal kind
of back to you know, relevancy to say the least.

(47:55):
But you know, got a good win against Clemson last year.
I would lump them and you know teams like SMU,
teams like Miami, maybe at North Carolina that I would
safely bet on to say, Hey, one of those four
teams is probably going to be in Charlotte at the

(48:18):
end of the year to play for a conference championship.
That would I would probably say Louisville, But then again,
what do I know about the ACC conferences other than
you might as well just give Clemson the trophy. You know,
week one, you know from Charlotte. So either way, Louisville
comes into SMU, and I think SMU gets to win.

(48:39):
Like I said, two weeks to prepare for a team.
There's no there's no excuse to not beat the team
after two weeks to prepare. Remember twenty ninth, last game
of the season. Take a road trip and it's a
pretty good long one to cal to play the cal Bears. Yeah,
lump them in there with the b with the Wakes

(49:01):
and the Syracuse and the Stanfords. I couldn't tell you
much about him, I really couldn't. You know, Aaron Rodgers
and Marshaun Lynch. That's about all I can think of
that played for Cals. So what have you done for
me lately? Right? So? They yeah, good win. I think

(49:22):
SMU will take that road trip cross country, go play
the cow Bears and beat them in California. Looks like damn,
this is getting too common. Nine and three as well.
That looks like them in Iowa State are predicted to
do exactly the same. Mm hmm. I shoot, I don't know.

(49:47):
Floor could be seven and five for SMU. You know,
I gave Baylor the win against SMU. I have them
going to TCU and winning. H Yeah, Like I said,
that's not the two toughest, you know, Big twelve competitors.
I get why they're playing Baylor and TCU because they're

(50:08):
kind of geographically kind of close to each other. I
would love to play SMU again non conference. I think
that would be musty TV Week two, Week three, you know, YadA, YadA, YadA.
But uh yeah, they could SMU could lose both of those,
they could win both of those. Their conference schedule isn't
the hardest. But then again, I guess they've played the

(50:31):
top three if they're playing the top three or four
of that conference from last year, of course, with Clemson
them themselves finishing second, and then I guess I would
kind of lump Louisville and Miami and that top little
upper echelon of the ACC. So, like I said, but
I don't know about cal, I don't know about BC,
and don't know about Wake, Stanford or Syracuse. So we'll

(50:55):
have to just find out, you know, about that ACC
Conference and see if it's not just top heavy, you know,
maybe it's a little deeper than the experts think. And
we'll go from there. Like I said, nine and three,
floor could be like A said seven and five, I
think the ceiling eleven and one. I mean, you're going

(51:17):
to lose somewhere. There's potential on this schedule to lose
a lot, but just too many glaring losses. I see
maybe the Miami the Clemson for sure, But then again,
don't know about Clemson either. Like I said, are they're
going to ever fall from various? Who knows? And maybe

(51:38):
SMU is the team to do it. But like I said,
nine and three, that's respectable. It looks like you only
have two conference losses that could get you back into Charlotte.
You never know. But like I said, if they go
ten and two, here they come again the SMU Mustangs
and the ACC Conference. So that doesn't for me. Guys.

(51:58):
That was the Idow State Cyclones out of Big twelve
and the SMU Mustangs out of the ACC Conference. I
do believe let's just kind of go down the line
and do kind of like I did. Let's bring you
the Oregon Ducks out of the Big Ten. You know,

(52:19):
a quiet Big Ten championship from the Oregon Ducks last year.
Good team, great team, great, you know, head coach, one
of the only teams to beat you know, Ohio State
last year and the reigning Big Ten champion. You know,
there's no way we can't talk about the Oregon Ducks,
right So I'm gonna bring you the Oregon DUTs next week.

(52:41):
And the team that's with them is the Tennessee Volunteers,
a team that finished third and their respective conference right
behind Georgia and Texas could take steps forward, you know,
yet again, a great, great team. I have had a
sustained greatness over the past three or four years. Seems

(53:02):
like every other year they beat Obama, they could beat
the Georgia. You know, just a really good team and
the SEC and you have to give them respect. So
I definitely have to talk about the Tennessee Volunteers. So
that's next week, Like I said, Tennessee and Oregon, and
I'll give you guys the rest of that at least July,
you know, as we go. But that's what I have

(53:24):
cooking for you guys next week. Tennessee and Oregon. You
gotta take care of one another, keep continuing to have
a you know, great summer. Please stay out of trouble.
Don't do anything I would do, and then if you do,
you know, don't name it after me. All right, But yeah,
like I said, you put some sunscreen on. You know,

(53:47):
definitely got to wear the deep woods. I definitely have
to with all the rain we've been having down here lately.
Goodness gracious, it's been so hot and so muggy. And
the mosquitoes, oh, they love me to death. I have
a rare blood type, so I think that's what I
always hear, so that they love rare blood Sota get

(54:08):
eaten alive when I'm outside. So yeah, I said, yeah,
take care of one another. I'll be back, you know,
in a short week, and it'll be one week closer.
Remember every time you listen to CEM that my voice
is getting louder. The college football atmosphere is getting louder.
The doll roar is slowly becoming a roar, and it's

(54:32):
getting louder and louder. Because July will be over before
we know it, and August twenty third the season starts.
That's week zero. So once July is over, we are
only three short weeks away from college football being official
and that ball being in the air and those crisp
fall you know, afternoons into winter nights, all the way

(54:57):
through the spring. It's all coming closer and closer. Like
I said, weeks or weeks and weeks away, but it's
getting closer and closer. So take a deep breath. We
will get there together, I promise. I can't wait to
do these last couple of teams and talk a little heisman.
I have all that working right now. Give you some

(55:18):
guys that, of course you'll know their names. They're the
starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. They're the you know,
you got to talk about a Drew a Lar and
an arch Manning and a Nick single Tim you know
Cade club Nick out of Clumbson. You have to talk
about the usual suspects, the guys that you know. You

(55:39):
fast forward, you have the remote like click, you know,
for the college football season, and you go, I just
want to skip right to the end, and you know,
to see who the Heisman winner is, to see who's
the national champion, and then you can kind of go, oh,
I saw that coming, or I'm not surprised to see
that player holding up that trophy. And you know, I'll

(56:03):
do some guys maybe you should know, you know, from
a lesser program, maybe like a Sam Levitt. I would
throw him in that competition. And you'll probably saying, there's
probably eight people out there going sam Levit' is probably
one of the best returning you know, quarterbacks and not
just a conference in the Big twelve, but in the
country as well. And I absolutely agree with you. But

(56:25):
there might be people out there that don't know a
sam Levitt, maybe a Sawyer Robinson out of BYU, another
guy you know if I mean, sorry Robinson out of Baylor. Sorry,
Oh I messed that up. My bad. We were talking
about them earlier, right, But anyway, talk about those kind
of guys and then I'll give you a few. Hey,

(56:48):
if you like a long shot, I'm gonna give you
some long shots. And you know, talk about some of
these guys that, like I said, you may heard of,
you may have not. But they play for SMU, they
play for in Indiana, they play for an Arizona state.
Maybe give you a Cam Scataboo type player that you

(57:08):
know has a great year and you know they win
ten or eleven games. You get you get talked about
the Heisman. Now, the Heisman's not what the Heisman should be.
Heisman is a popularity contest nowadays. Travis Hunter should not
have won the Heisman last year. And if you are
shaking your head because you don't think Ashton j T

(57:32):
is a better player than Travis Hunter and it was
a more important player than Travis Hunter, you don't watch
enough college football. Ashton jain T was Boise State football
got them to the College Football Playoff. Now Colorado, would
they have lost more games without Travis Hunter, Yes, But

(57:53):
did they win a whole lot of games because of
Travis Hunter. I don't know. I just think it was
the most popular player last year. And the Heisman shouldn't
be a popularity contest. It would be if this player
does not play for that team, that team would be
ill relevant. I still think Colorado would have had pretty

(58:14):
close to the same year that they would have had
last year without Travis Center. But Boise State wouldn't have
won all the games they won if it wasn't for
Ashton Jt. So uh, fight fight, fight a tree, because
that's that's my thoughts, that's my opinions, And if you
agree with it, if You're cool. If you don't agree

(58:35):
with it, argue with yourself, because it really doesn't matter.
That's it's my opinion. It's my freaking show. I could
pretty much say whatever the all I want, right, but no,
I mean, it's just opinion, you know, it's it's what
we in our country, it's what we have our right
to do. You can stand on something and you completely
can be one hundred percent for it, you know, And

(58:58):
you know, I don't know. Not everybody's right, everybody's wrong.
But like I said, just my opinion. You know, Like
I said, shit thinker goes. Guys, tune in, like I said,
next week talking to Oregon and Tennessee, like I said,
I got some more teams coming up, and I got
that Heisman special and then I'm gonna predict. I'm going
to predict a twelve team playoff and hopefully go two

(59:18):
for three and picking the national champion that will be
holding up that trophy in twenty twenty six. So you guys,
take care of another, take care of one another. I
love you guys so much. I gave all the countries
a shout out, so thank you guys so much last week.
I appreciate y'all. If there is an ocean, you know
between you know me and you, I thank you from

(59:40):
the bottom of my heart. I really, really, truly do
we connot be here if it wasn't for the outside love.
And I say outside love outside of the United States
of America. I thank you guys so much. So many
countries listen, and at bottom of my heart, thank you
so much. I want to see more countries. I want
to see you guys spread the word. I want to

(01:00:01):
see the football function spread like wildfire. Because I truly
believe we have a good group of guys. You know
that I call ourselves the Avengers, that all different and
all have our own strengths, and I'll bring all bring
something different to the table. And we all want to
be better and we all strive to be the best.

(01:00:23):
And I think that's what's going to drive us through
the finish line that is the off season. And it's
getting tiring, Yeah, I really is digging up all this
stuff and going through their last year and you know,
trying to stay a week ahead and getting all this done.
And I got to turn around and jump right back
into college football and get into what I want to do.

(01:00:44):
You know this is like I said, this is just
off season and stuff to keep you, you know, keep
you salivating, you know, keep you excited and get you
ready for next season. But like I said, thank you
to all the listeners. Thank you to the Football Function
as well. Mister Ritter. Of course, you know Captain America,
the flag bearer, you know, the guy that stirs the ship,
the guy that does all the work. In my perfect
darkness opinion, I just do this show and I send

(01:01:06):
it out. I send it out to him, and he
does the hard work. So all I have to do
is press the button, get it sent, and that's all
I have to do. And he has to do everything else.
And Terry Minifield is right here. Man wouldn't be here
without him, wouldn't be here without Ridder, and of course
would not be here without Andy Lefon. Where Andy Lafon crawled,
Cem got to walk. So I cannot thank him enough.

(01:01:27):
And everybody at the Football Function, the old football Function
completely and with dub Jay got to blump him in there.
He was a part of this. He still is a
part of this. I know he doesn't have a show anymore,
but he's still a brother. He's still a football function funky.
He's still gonna be around. I haven't heard from him
in a while. I actually heard from Mike not too

(01:01:48):
long ago. He listened to the show and he enjoyed it,
you know, and definitely, I appreciate so much. I love
the output, the intake, you know, all the good stuff
that comes from doing the show. So you guys, I
appreciate y'all so much, and I'm ready to hear Goose,
you know, when the season starts, and of course the
Grim reefer. I hope him and Claire are doing well.

(01:02:10):
He reached out to me not too long ago, Grim
did and he was worried about being you know, he said, hey,
you know, I saw the flooding in Texas, and you know,
I hope you're okay, and I you know, and I
told him, I said, hey, I appreciate that. You know,
I'm good. But that was you know, that's South Texas.
You know, I'm in northwest Texas. You know, Texas is

(01:02:31):
so big that you can see different kinds of Texas
and for days and drive around Texas and still be
in Texas. Like I said before, you know, weeks ago,
Texans vacation to other parts of Texas, you know, for
their vacations. And that's the peer got on the truth.
It happens all the time. That's how big Texas is.

(01:02:53):
And I appreciate that for you know, him reaching out
because he didn't know, he just saw floods Texas, seeing
lives in Texas. I'm gonna reach out to him, and
I appreciate that. That's what brothers do, you know, that's
the friends do. And I appreciate that. But all is good,
and you know, I hope people pray for all the
lost lives that happened down there in South Texas. It's

(01:03:16):
up in the triple digits. Well over one hundred people
have died and a lot of them are children. And yeah,
it's it's rough right now in Texas, but oh Texas
is resilient. We there's no state. I wish Americans loved

(01:03:37):
America like Texans loved Texas. I seriously do. I we
wouldn't have the problems that we have. So, you know,
God blessed Texas for sure. So my hearts go out
