(00:13):
Welcome to the old time radio Westerns. I'm your host Andrew Ryans, and
let's get into this episode. Thisepisode is gonna be Fort Laramie. Original
Aron eighth is October fourteenth, nineteenfifty six, and the title is still
Waters. Thanks for listening. Ihope you enjoy a Fort Laramie. Fort

(01:17):
Laramie, starring Raymond Byrd as Captainlee Quince, specially transcribed tales of the
dark and tragic ground of the wildFrontier, the saga of fighting men who
rode the rim of Empire, andthe dramatic story of lee Quince, Captain
of Cavalry. Captain. Oh,mister Sabbert's men looked fine, I thought,

(01:55):
well, yes, sir, theylooked all right, good drill,
good raid, Yes, sir.But actually I was more concerned with,
well, weren't you listening, sir? I was watching Lieutenant. I almost
never listened to address parade. Imean the band. The band seemed to
march real good, Captain. Themusic. Frankly, I thought it was
terrible. Oh, usually it justsounds bad. Today it was awful.

(02:21):
What didn't it sound strange to you, Timmy off Key? I was watching
b Company, mister Sabbert's March justfine. I don't know. Maybe it's
my ears, More likely my ears. I don't pay much mind to the
music. When I was a boy, my mother thought I had a promising
voice, so i'd sing for man. The hogs had come running, Then

(02:42):
the neighbors got so they'd come runningtoo. I got a lot of encouragement
to quit singing. But just becauseyou couldn't sing well, Captain, doesn't
mean you don't have an appreciation formusic. I think it does, mister
Saberts. You see, I wasn'tjust obliging my mother. I thought I
sounded fine too. Well. Youwere considerably younger, sir. I'm sure
you're about grown all that by now. After all, with your mother to

(03:06):
encourage you, you couldn't be blamedfor thinking her neck. She wore a
ribbon Captain Sward in the winter andthe merriment of man. And when I
asked, girl, wise, really, Captain, it was more about the
regimental band than anything else. Andif you didn't notice the band sway farway,

(03:28):
she wore it for her lover, who was far far away. Yes,
so I'm beginning to think I wasvery mistaken. If you like far
happy question, did you dage? What are you doing? I was singing,
sir, All that's singing. Yes, A do, and I suppose

(03:51):
it's a minority opinion. Are youdrunk, captain? No, sir,
I can account for the singing ifyou're interested, major. I'm only interested
in stopping it. We've had enoughbad music around here for one day.
I thought dress parade came off fine, Sir. I was very proud of
be company. Captain. I don'twant to hear another reference to dress parade
today. Yes, it it's over. That's the only good thing about it.

(04:12):
It's over. I don't want todiscuss it. I don't want to
hear it discussed. That's an order, captain. Yes, sir, I
won't even ask if you heard theband? Did you hear the man?
Must have? I saw it.Seemed to me they marched real good,
no matter if you heard it ornot. If that fellow and you call
singing's a sample of your ear formusic that march real good? I thought,

(04:34):
so, sir. If I wantmarching, I'll get a company of
infantry from a band. Captain.I expect just one thing music. I
think I'm being unreasonable. I'm kindof hard to get music out of busted
instruments. I imagine. I realizedsome of the pieces are quite old.
Shoots tells me in the field theyhave problems with rust sand fowl on the
cornet pistons, but busted instruments. The board said the band was brawling over

(04:59):
something Saturday, right, someone puthis foot through a field drums. Some
of the blowhorns got smashed. Youread a report on a band brawl on
your desk Sunday morning. Major,Oh wow, I want to talk to
the band master, and if you'llstop delaying me, I will. Sorry

(05:19):
to hold you up, Major Lee, I'm I'm sorry, but what and
that man is the devil and didn'tmean to take it out on you.
I was handy and you were singing, don't forget and to set me off
set mister Seibert's off too. Thefact of the matter is we have guests

(05:43):
on the post. I wanted tobe especially proud of our band. Oh
and what they did the boots andsaddles, I think it was boots and
sound. I got to see Shootstell him I thought the band marched real
good. Yeah, Oh me,you ailing Harrison, not me, Sergeant

(06:18):
we'd like to get that lumber loaded. Says you could run the wagon up
the old bedlam unloaded and come backhere and start all over. I'm doing
what I can. I swear Iam. You ain't ailing. You shake
a leg, both shaking now,Sergeant, all right, Harrison, come
out with it. I got abouthalf a minute's patient's left. You know

(06:42):
I'm a reasonable man. You knowthat right off. Well, if I'm
not reasonable, maybe there's a call. I ain't got a long await like
this contrary weather. It ought tobe cooling off, give a man a
feel for hard work. It's gotno right to be blazing hot this time
a year. Asking for a changeof weather. I'd be obliged if you

(07:03):
could arrange it, Sergeant, anything, just any small thing of being improvement.
Well, uh, you just cometo the right man, Harrison,
just for you. I'm gonna changethe weather. You mind? Now you
ask me to do it? Oh? I ask? I sure? Ask?
All right, Troop A Harrison.Yes, Sergeant, report to the
guide house guard house on what charge? On a charge that you asked for.

(07:28):
It takes you right out of theblazing sun. Of course, how
you're going to get a breath ofair or something else again, but seeing
any small change of being improved,Sergeant, I'll be getting back to my
lowden Now. I thought you wantedto change your weather. One day.
I'm gonna learn to keep my mouthshut around here. That day comes,
you write me a letter so I'llknow you know I can't write. I

(07:54):
tell you one good thing, Harrison. I just think rising to any more
abating, sergeant. But Ted's overin half hour, and after something there's
a band concert. I know weain't gonna cool the off none not a
sense worth only they ain't gonna beno band concert. In fact, if
Bandmaster Schutz can't explain itself any betterto meet your dagger than he has.

(08:18):
Maybe we heard the last two everfrom our regimental band, Blin am blin

(08:52):
a You around plenty? No,what are you doing behind the pickle barrel?
You drop a penny? Are youalone? Captain? Sure? I'm

(09:15):
not exactly opened. It's almost fourthirty. You'd open at midnight to sell
a twopenny cigar? And I'll comeon out from behind that barrel. Well,
oh, Mike Nerving, that's whatit is. What did you want?
Captain? What are you whispering?About. Well, you never know

(09:39):
who's listening these days. I'm listening. I'm hard put to hear you.
Are you going to sell me aglass of beer? Do I have to
draw it myself? Ha? Haha? Who sent you bliny? It's
a hot day. No you don't, sir. I know an investigation when
I see one. Well, youmay tell that committee and Major Daggett and

(10:03):
all the powers that be that Iam living up to the letter of my
agreement with the United States Army.Maybe you ought to have a glass of
beer too. Yeah, it's notmy concern. If the regimental band can't
play without instruments, what about theband? No beer, no band?
Oh I miss the drums, won'tyou planny? What time of day do

(10:26):
you start making sense? Why?Captain? I believe you don't know.
You came here in innocence, Butthese are dark days, and the seeds
of distrust are on the wind. This time. I'm going into the canteen
and get that beer. There isno beer. There will be no beer.
Beer is a closed issue. PoorShootes, Poor poor shoots. You

(10:50):
keep going from beer to band, from no beer to no band, and
you can thank missus Fienster and hercommittee for that. Fiemester's not doing anything,
She's just visiting Fort Laramie. Hervisit was ill timed, just when
Shootz needed new instruments the worst way. Ah but alas five percent of nothing

(11:13):
will not buy French horns and trumpets, and eh, I will miss the
drums. I'm still not reaching you, am I Captain? I am,
I know, no you're not. Then let me put it simply. A

(11:35):
B C A is for the agreement. Now, then five percent of all
proceeds from the sale of beer Igive to B which is the band from
these moneys. Shoots buys new instruments. That is that he did until Ah,
yes, until c C is forcommittee headed by missus Fiemester, the

(12:00):
committee for moral improvement. If youwill, oh, and that means no
beer it follows then no beer,no proceeds, no band. Yeah I
put that, well, didn't ifyou did your better climb in that pickle
barrel pliny. A settler that doesn'tsell beer needs a real hiding place about.

(12:22):
But the brine salted, Oh,captain, just about to send for

(12:46):
you. This came from the settlers. Major you got any idea what's going
on around here? Would your voicedown. Come here. Cliney was whispering
too. For a while I listenedto me Lee. I get a better
idea than anyone. What's going onaround here. Missus Feamster's in my office.
Now, let's go in here. The army run by a woman.

(13:09):
Now, Major, that's not funnily. I don't mean it funny. I
can't get a glass of beer,Planny says that Woman's why. I've just
learned from Washington that there's several thousandMissus Feamster's captain, and their ranks seem
to be growing daily. Not onlythat, but they're also mister Feemsters,
and their voices are getting louder everyday. Missus Fiemeste doesn't like beer on

(13:31):
moral grounds. You like whiskey better. Whiskey isn't the issue. Beer light
wines, such as her soul atthe Sutler's canteen. Then she likes whiskey
better. She wouldn't see it thatway. Besides, it isn't just the
beer. That's just part of theirplan for moral improvement. They want to
see that all posts have libraries, more recreational facilities. Concerts from the Regimental

(13:54):
Band playing on No instruments woom.Missus Fiemster realizes the problem there. I
got nothing against libraries recreation, weneed him. But do you think we
got any kind of a drinking problemat Fort Laramie. I've never gonna were
a one. If we had one, you'd be aware of it, we
all would. And if we hadone, it wouldn't be on account of
beer served at the settlers. Iknow that, Lee. You act like

(14:16):
this was up to me. Letme assure you it isn't, Missus Fiemester,
Post commander, I'm still in commandhere, and that means I still
follow orders from Washington. That's wherethe real pressure's coming from. They've banned
a sale of beer at Fort Sulley, Fort McPherson, and Fort Totten,
and I can't keep him from banningit here. And that brings us back
to whiskey again. If a mancan't get a glass of beer in the
post, he'll go off the post. You think, Missus Fiemester knows what

(14:39):
a hog granch is a whiskey ranch, I doubt it. Well. They
got him now all around Fort Sulleyand Fort Totten, and men that used
to drink beer at those posts asstealing off and rotting their insides on hog
granch whiskey. You seem pretty sureyou're factually ask major trucks. You got
the information at the post surgeons meetinglast month at Fort Randall. Post surgeons

(15:03):
are recommending that they reopened the canteens. M I wonder, just wonder.
No, No, I didn't neverwork. Oh what wouldn't work. I
don't think even major trucks could convinceMissus Feamster she was shortsighted. I was
thinking more of letting Missus Feamster makeher own decision about being shortsighted. You

(15:26):
haven't met her, have you?No, I'm kind of looking forward to
it. Ali, I'd like tovolunteer to show Missus Feamster round the post
tomorrow. Major volunteer might just tellher. I'll call for her tomorrow right
after guard Mount afternoon to your major. Of course, in time, we'd

(15:56):
want to build a library building separate, but that takes right now. There's
only one building not being put touse. Oh, I'm sure I don't
know where that is. Captain Goodnessknows. We've covered most of the posts
except the subtler's ma'am is just ahead. But surely the subtler's store isn't vacant.
Not the store, just the canteens'spart of the same building. Is

(16:17):
that where they keep here when theyhad it, ma'am, My dear young
man, I have never set footin a saloon, and I don't intend
to go now zaloons where they sellliquor. Ma'am. This canteen's an empty
room and a counter. But ifyou don't want to look at it,
we are certain certain there's nothing inthe nature of spirits in there. I

(16:42):
give you my word, Missus fimoux, there isn't a sign of spirit in
there? Now very well, thenI suppose I should take the long view.
After all, the library is theimportant thing. But in a saloon
canteen, I'll take your word. There's a difference, Captain, after you,

(17:07):
ma'am, thank you, Captain.Canteen straight ahead, Missus Beames do
now, then, Planny, Igot a long more to hear. Best
you write it down. Just amoment's Ergeant, yester, moment, Captain,
there's plenty. Oh have you metmissus Fames do? This is plenty
Burges, the settler, mister Burges, Madam, Now, Captain, you

(17:30):
know very well. The canteen iswell, it's we know, Planny.
We come to see how the roomadu for a library. A library you
mean books and books in there. We'll just look it over you mind your
customer over there? Oh well,I don't know about cash money, Planny

(17:53):
coming yesterday. In fact, i'mhere well missus Beams do well, yes,
I think perhaps you may be right. Capital lemon extract this room would
make it. I want all thelemon extract. You got all of vanilla
peppermine ginger and all ever drop, then I want everything in stock in the

(18:15):
way of cinnamon, red pepper, sauces bay rum. You got any smelling
water, planning smelling? Oh no, I don't believe it happened to run.
Oh no, no, you're notpaying much mind to the room.
Man, Hey, oh why ohyes, it's it's first rate old D
something fling o D smelling. Excuseme, ma'am. Uh you know what

(18:41):

nice old d old d colo. That's it, man, Thank you
kindly. I'll take all you gotplanning all up, I've got jeems me.
You could get several hundred books inhere, Miss Feamster. Now along

(19:03):

me, ma'am. I am indeedyour order to mister Burgess, all the

you're planning to do with it?Why? Drink it, ma'am? Drink

H h. Well, now I'lltell you what I'm going to do.

(20:10):
I since you're such a good customer, I'm going to let you have a
whole thing for fifty seven dollars andthirty three cents. You drink it plenty.
I'm going to lay me a villagefor a beard. Why, Captain,

(20:37):
you've come to say goodbye. Iwasn't sure i'd be welcome, As
themes to Major tells me you werea while settling down. I very nearly
fadd you may as well know that, if it'd make you feel any better,
it was all made up for yourbenefit. Man, So Major Daggers
assured me. Oh, my captain, I'm going back to Washington with a

(20:59):
brand new outlook. I think ourCommittee on Moral Improvement may just revise its
thinking a bit. You talk tothe post surgeon. Indeed, I did.
I'm taking the entire matter up withall of official Washington. Yes,
man, and I want to thankyou for opening my eyes, Captain,
and that nice orderly of yours.Yes true. For Harrison, he's the
