very special, Salma, who is a junior here at Only
Friends School.

So introduce yourself, Selma.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Okay, thank you, Christina.

a junia only from school.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Welcome to the podcast for a second time.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
So I'm super excited to have you here today and
we're just going to have a quick session. I think
it's really important for our listeners to get to know
our students. And Salma is actually from Uganda, which is
a country in Africa. So could you tell us a
little bit about Africa. I was doing some thinking and
(00:58):
I realized Americans have this misperception of Africa, and I
would like you to kind of clarify some things and
tell us about your country and what you love about it,
what you miss about it.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Okay, thank you. So Africa is really big.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
And I come from East Africa Uganda, so we're not
really at that coast, but it gives like coastly vibes
and all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
What I like most.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
About is it's beauty, the climate, it's just really welcoming.
From what I have learned and what I do know,
Uganda is caused the power of Africa, so that's like
a big take away from me.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
It's just really beautiful.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
The people are really kind, and I believe that most
of the people he had only okay, well, majority of
the students are from Uganda, and I may not have
met them, but like from what I see and what
I feel from them, we have that sort of hospitality
that we carry around ourselves and try to make sure
(02:06):
everybody is like included, which I really love.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
It really had to find a community away.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
From home, but like with these guys around, with people around,
I just feel at home. And I think that's what
I really miss about Chiican, the feeling of home, being
at home with my mother.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
She may not be here, but that's only with everybody here.
I really feel pissing myself.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Beautiful, you make me want to go. I might have
to come visit your hometown. So that's really neat. How
many how many people? What's the population of Africa?
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Well, okay, I feel.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Like it's like two hundred some million or something like that, and.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
I can't really estimate because you Ghana is like pretty small,
but I really okay with like millions, so like I
can't imagine what the population is in like democratric Republic
of Congo or maybe in Nigeria, South Sidan, South Africa,
like I don't know, maybe estimate five hundred million or more.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
And how many countries are in Africa?
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Wow, I know there's a lot, Okay, if I remember correctly,
they range around fifty two to fifty four countries.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
That is amazing. Yeah, that's a lot of countries. What
language do you speak?
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Okay? So in Uganda, whatep?
Speaker 4 (03:38):
I speak English, though most places speak It's okay, like
it's kind of famous, but not really famous, right, So
like in the Central region of Uganda, it's mainly predominantly Bagandas.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Right, what's that word bagandas bagandas exactly, so.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
The language is called exactly.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
So most of our only my students because I speak
to like the Africans, they do know Luganda.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Oh that's fascinating.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Exactly, but it's not's like the official language because kind
of optial language is English because we have many different
tribes different languages, but like Luganda is just like popular.
So like if when I get your way around town
or maybe go somewhere and you know, Luganda, you can
definitely reach there.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Oh that sounds like fun. So what what?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
So let's imagine you're at home now and you and
your friends want to go out for the afternoon.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
What does that look look like? Okay, what do you
guys do?
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Well? Fun? I think maybe like food? We all like,
if you're talking about food, I will definitely show up.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
But like I'm of late kids my age and you
Ganda are like touring places, visiting modes of course, having
music friends, so basically food, I don't know, just having
fun basically you know, going for rides and all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Watching movies at home.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
What kind of movies do you like?
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Okay, so right now I want really watch like It's
it's amazing, right but like it has Michael B.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Jordan in it, and I really want to watch it.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
And I know right now in your Ghanda, everybody is
like waiting for like the moment she drops in the cinema,
everybody's going there. Yeah, so I think I like more
of adventure kind of movies, and yeah, it keeps me
like through and excited okay, yeah, that's exciting.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
What other hobbies do you have?
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Oh, I like see me.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Like whenever in your ganda all the every they if
you just stay away for seeming, I'm coming.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
I will be there. I just like.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
I'm doing a five miles swim challenge right now. What
yeah for me?
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Oh my, that's so great.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Do you so when you go swimming? Do you swim
in the ocean a pool? Where do you go swimming at? Well?
Speaker 4 (06:24):
I think I usually go to like a hotel that
has like a pool. It's kind I like the cover vibe,
but like it's just your quiet, you know, I'm not
I hate like a lot of noise. I could always
go to the beach, like near Lake Victoria because this
are moist beaches, but I hate the first I have
to stip insand and like a rock there, and it's just.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
I don't like sand either. Yeah, you know it's it
gets everywhere exactly. So So your future, what what do
you want to do?
Speaker 3 (06:59):
What?
Speaker 1 (06:59):
What are your playing? Okay?
Speaker 2 (07:02):
After graduating from only of course next year, I wanted
to like be a.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Chemical engineer for like a long time, but then recently
I spoke to my principal Christian at GM, and he
recommended me to like pursue also low, which I hadn't
like really considered at all, but like as that thought,
as a like why not, Like I would want to do.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Both of them.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
So yeah, I'm kind of wearing the skills should I
drop one, but I really want to do both of them.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
So it's fifty fifty.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
That's really interesting.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
I wouldn't think to put those two together, but that
would be a really interesting field and career for you,
for sure.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
That would open a lot more doors, I think, Yeah,
I think. And how about how do you like it here?
Speaker 4 (08:01):
Well, the first you hear I didn't like the weather.
Of course, it's either the sun or the rain. There's
no like winter. There is no cold temperatures you need
to like clay up. No, it's just like why your
pants day in the out the whole year. When I
came here and I saw that winter, I You're like,
oh my goodness.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Cold, you know exactly.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
You know, it's still like clearing up but not really
warming enough, like freezing up. You're like, and then the summertime,
oh my goodness, it's too hot.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
It's like that is hot, but like it's too hot.
You can't sleep at night. I just so like, why
it's too.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Hot and it's too cold here in Ohio. That is
so funny.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
That would be a huge culture shot, or not really
culture shot, but a huge difference from being so used
to one one temper and then all of a sudden
being exposed to these two drastic seasons. But hopefully we
will have another podcast with Salma soon. She has to
(09:11):
get to our next class. So thank you so much
Salma for joining us, and thank you everyone for listening in.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Have a beautiful day.
