Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right, are we peeking? We clipping? Okay, we're ready to
rock and roll. Well, August is a rather exciting month,
isn't it. The summer of sport is in full swing,
as are the school holidays here in England. But here
(00:22):
at the Jacksmith dot com, as you all very well know,
all we doing around here is cinema. We eat, sleep
and breathe film, especially now that I've got myself into
judging a film festival. So let's not mess around. Let's
get straight into it. Welcome to this month's edition at
a front row, you'll one stop shop as to what's
(00:43):
playing in UK cinemas over the next four weeks. And well,
to put it simply, there's quite a lot coming in.
Let's have a look, shall we?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Welcome to your new home pipe part and and we should.
I don't like he's sing it.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
On August first, we've got a new body horror in
Bring Her Back, the brand new film from the Philipo Boys.
These two are best known for a twenty four horror
Talk to Me from twenty twenty three, one of the
most criskly regarded horror.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Films have gone last couple of years.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Sally Hawkins will leave the cast in this film and
to give you a flavor of what it's about. A
brother and a sister and cover and it's terrifying ritual
at the secluded home of their new foster mother. If
you like your horror, twisted, messed up and just generally bonkers,
this will.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Be the film for you.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
No a word on how many cinemas are going to
get this one, but probably a wide release given how
well talked to me did August first? Is August a
good day to be opening family friendly movies. As a
twenty four bring out their own family friendly effort, a
very independent et with a lovely little film called The
(02:00):
Legend of Ochie. It's got film wolf Hard and Emma
Watson and Wilhelm Defoe amongst its cast, and based on
reviews coming out of the States, looks like it could
be a little gem that might be overlooked by the
majority of the UK multiplex cinemas. Might be worth tracking
down if you can find a screening for it. But
while the family friendly market has a lot going for it,
(02:22):
there are a couple of new comedy films coming out.
One of them involves this.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Guy Nobody Messes When Please.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Squad yes, that is the nieson playing Frank Dremin Junior
because somehow the powers that be at Parana have decided
this is the time to make a naked gun remake.
The original three films are amongst some of the finest
comedy to come out in the nineteen eighties. For Leslie
Nielsen series of films directly inspired by Police Squad series
(02:54):
that they did back in the day, the humor still
holds up really well, said Erring the fact that a
lot of the humor in it you can't really get
away with in this day and age. Practicing safe sex
and going for the full visual joke of them wearing.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Life sized condoms like the Zucker films.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
They were not afraid to go to places that shouldn't
have been gone to in the nineteen eighties. And it's
Then's the Dad. Pamela Anderson's got a sporting role, and
some of the jokes that they get away over the
betrayal with it being relatives of the original cast, including
the o j joke that pop me that really did
(03:39):
pop me, pining scenes. It's the director of a lot
of glo in the Islands work. It's Akiva Shaeffer who's
directed in this one. He's co written it with two
of the writers of How I Met Your Mother and
it is produced by Seth macfarthin. He's got a mixed
run of movies. First Ted film was really good, Ted
two was okay. A million waist of Dying West was
(04:03):
the less said about that the better. Let's put it
like that. So that's why I'm excited to see where
this film goes. It's gonna have an interesting ride at
the box office. Comedy is a genre that Hollywood is
really neglected over the last couple of years, especially original comedy.
So if this film does well with a cast like that,
(04:25):
they're likely get a greenlight. More comedy of this ILK Now,
both The Naked Gunn and this next film are coming
out on August eighth, And well, and don't get what
I'm doing this film twenty two years off. Last time,
we convinced everyone that we were each other until we
switched back.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
I didn't want to be a part of this family,
and now I'm part of some dodgy family Kurtel and
I'm the eldest.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
The cynic in me really thinks that Freaky Friday was
a franchise that didn't really land as well on reception
in two thousand and three as everyone force it did.
It got word of mouth following because of Lindsay Lohan
obviously had her world documented Hollywood struggles, let's say, but
her and Jamie Ee Curtis are back for Freakier Friday.
(05:12):
It's basically for a lot of Seinning the Traders. It's
a rehashing, same pot, all the caster back. It's a
sequel a Disney to twenty years to greenlight. It makes
a question for me, is it fan service or is
it Bob Ayger just green lighting things because he's running
out of ideas. I talked about this with a very
good friend of mine, the professional director who lived International,
(05:34):
when we watch Mission Impossible Final Reckoning together, we both
said that.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
This film's probably not going to do that well, and.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
I want to be proven wrong. The more people we
can get in cinemas, the better. But I don't know
if Freakier Friday is going to get the audience that
we think it's going to get. It's going to play
it's a nostalgia crowd, but I don't think any audience
are going to land with it as well as The
Ogs did.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
But on the other end of spectrum.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
August twenty second, Ari Freakin' Asta, We need to Free
each Other's hearts. August twenty second brings one of the
kings of horror of last couple of years making a
(06:22):
very modern day Western with Eddington. It's Ari doing dark
comedy in Western with a hole of a cast Yuck
in Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and more. I haven't
been able to do Ari's films because we don't really
cover the horror as much here at Lee Jacksmith dot com.
(06:43):
But this film looks really good. It looks really good,
and it is a crying shame. The Triple booked that
weekend because the end of August is cinema heaven for me.
Having We'll get onto that in a bit, but there
are so many films we're gonna be talking about going
(07:06):
into the autumn, coming out towards.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
The back end of this month.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
And just when he thought one auto filmmaker was enough,
enter Mike Vanagan adapting yet another Stephen King novella, with
the Life of Chuck also opening in UK cinemas an
August twenty second, most likely in a limited release, and
with a lot of good word coming out of Toronto
Film Festival, A wrap up the lesser films.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
I say lesser films.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
It's Darren Aronofsky's new one, based on the book of
the same name, Court Stephen, is about a burned out
X baseball player unexpectedly finding himself broad in a dangerous
struggle for survival amidst a criminal underbelly of nineteen nineties
New York City. Sounds like me getting involved in rugby
union all those years ago. Christ Look, it's Austin Butler
(07:54):
doing one of his first major films post Elvis and
Aaron Osky's films don't really get a lot of mainstream attention.
They don't get wide releases here, but it will lightly
be one of the films that amazing the back of
Oscar voters' minds a bit later on in the year
when all the voting begins.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
For award season.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Again, we're not gonna be We're not sure if we're
gonna get to it. Here at the Jacksmith dot Com.
We're at the mercy of film buyers at view Odions
and the ARC. I've got built some rather good relationships
with I've the last couple of months, it seems but
I want to see more art houses films get played
(08:39):
here impressed.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Only time will tell.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
There can only be one movie that gets the coveted
title of the August SMIT Hot Film of the Month.
And if you've been following the work of Selene Song,
you'll understand why this film in particular has earned the
title because my god, g BRIT's excited to see this thing.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Do the matchmaker? You're the brother.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
What are you doing at the singles table?
Speaker 2 (09:11):
My mother wants me to marry I can help you
with that. Are you hitting on me?
Speaker 1 (09:17):
On August fifteenth, the director of Past Lives opens her
brand new romantic comedy, although actually real it's not a
romantic comedy by the numbers materialists and I say, it's
not by the numbers. It's about a matchmaker finding yourself
torn between the perfect match and her imperfect x is
(09:37):
Selene's song. So you know what you're letting yourself in
foll lot of themes of intimacy, love, modern relationships. You
also have a trio who are box office gold in
their own right, Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal
Say No More. It opened in the States in the
(09:59):
middle of the June. The reviews coming out of a
twenty four screenings over there have been ridiculously positive. I
am buzzing to see this film. I will be reviewing it.
I will probably be reviewing it on day one. I
mean r materialists. Everyone's likely going to be seeing it
for Pedro, Pascal, a little bit of Chris Evans, but
everyone's gonna be seeing it for Pedro because when has
(10:21):
he ever been a disappointment. The Anna Deana of Gabel
Acting World right now just missed it consistent. So this
one will likely do well. And some people are likely
saving Fantastic Four until a bit later on in August
when all of the films are Obviously he's doing editing
(10:41):
and he's doing this Fantastic Four, we are lot more
likely binged on the Last of Us as well, So
I wouldn't be surprised if we were big. Pedro stands
I'm going to do an Oppenheim movement and we'll binge
two films in one day. And I know this is
this is insider baseball, but I know this one's definitely
going to do well. With one particular member of our
(11:03):
production team here at the Jacksmith dot Com yeah, she
calls him her future husband. Well, if he's good enough
for one of my favorite South Africans, I guess he's
good enough for the whole world to share. So we've
rattled off all of the big films coming into cinemas.
What about the old but gold movies that are returning
to the big screen over the course of the next
(11:25):
quepic of weeks? Because only two, but they're two celebrating
some very milestone anniversaries. On August the eighth, Angle's classic
adaptation of the Jane Austin book, Sense and Sensibility, returns
to the big screen to celebrate it's thirtieth anniversary. And
(11:46):
my god, that cast sells itself, doesn't it to this day?
Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Windsor, Hugh Grant. That is
a who's who of iconic British talent. And here's a
little hot and fresh science faight view all. This was
Emma Thompson's first credited work as a screenwriter.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
She won an Oscar for it. That woman has range.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
It's also quite a timely reissue of Sense and Sensibility.
As a couple of weeks ago it was announced that
they're making a brand new version with Daisy Edgar Jones
as the lead. Oh my god, Holly would have running
out of ideas, aren't I? And then at the end
of then for the younger audiences who never got to
see it on the big screen back in two thousand
and five because they weren't twelve, Harry Potter and the
(12:34):
Goblet of Fire returns for its twentieth anniversary screenings. Back then,
it was the first Harry Potter film to earn the
twelve A certificate. The others had been PG to that
point Philosopher's Stone PG, Chamber of Secrets PG, Prisoner of
Azkaban PG, although quite frankly it should have been a
(12:55):
twelve it was a Gmo del Toro film. But over
the last couple of year, these reissues for the anniversary
of caposter films have become a tradition since the Philosopher's
Stone had its twentieth anniversary reissue during Deepest Darkest fifty
percent limited capacity COVID times we got twenty years on.
The magic is still there on screen. They hold up
(13:16):
really well. It's Daniel Radcliffe at the power of his game.
The cass still very young, learning how to do their
thing on the big screen. But you can't talk about
Harry Potter without addressing the elephant and room. And as
you say, don't look too closely behind the curtain because
you might see a real life villain instead of the
fictional ones. We also have a little big screen bonus
(13:37):
here because we don't just like to talk about the
films owning a UK cinemas. We're going to big up
the events, likely going to do it ridiculously well, and
this guy always pulls in the crowd. August firsty if
Andre Rue with his latest Mastery concert eventually titled What's
the Night Away? So I wonder if he's going to
(13:59):
be doing stuff from bar especially with the dual lipper track.
He is the king of what was for a reason,
pullsing good audiences for the various concerts he beams live
to cinemas throughout the year, very popular with the elder demographic. Understandably,
always does a really good business for events cinema. It's
(14:23):
the premium ticket price for a reason. This one's gonna
be no exception. Obviously we won't be going in depth
into it here at the Jacksmith dot com, but it's
worth noting regardless because these screenings do really well. So
with that being said, that is all of the major
things going on across Lee Jacksmith dot com, across the
(14:46):
UK cinemas and around wide and northwest it seems, over
the course of the next few weeks. But of course
there is a little bit more differnt road to come
this month. Stay tuned for our in depth preview and
a little event at the end of August that we
absolutely adore here at the Jacksmith dot com in Oliven
(15:09):
International Film Festival. Let us know what you're looking forward
to in the comments sections on the YouTube and Instagram
a Facebook page wherever you're watching, and stay tuned for
a wealth of Lee Jacksmith dot com content over the
next couple of weeks. It is a crazy time right
now and I'm all for it. So until next month,
(15:33):
ipen Jack from Lee Jacksmith dot com and we'll see
at the movies
