Untear fighters frontier fighters, portraying thethrilling advance of daring pioneers whose tremendous courage

(01:42):
and sacrifices in the face of overwhelmingodds made possible the exploration and settlement of
the West. One of the firstwhite men to explore the Black Hills of
South Dakota was General Custer. Inthe year eighteen seventy four, he set
out with engineers, photographers, andgeologists. When the report of the expedition
was finally published, there was butone phrase in it that people remembered.

(02:05):
That phrase was I found gold. The magic words inflamed the imagination, and
in late September of eighteen seventy four, Thomas Gordon of Sioux City attempted to
organize a party of twenty eight. What he met with unexpected opposition. Now,
wait a minute, wait a minute, let me say something. Don't
your men realize that all that land'swaiting for us? Sure, but we

(02:29):
ain't sure the country. You're ina party nine gold? Right? I'm
sure I was, but I knewthe country. There sides of Government's warn
everybody out of the Deakora's kind ofthe Indian. All right, all right,
but guess let me say this.Guess, let me say this.
I ain't gonna force anybody to signup with us, but General Custer's report
is good enough for me. Ifhis expedition got across the bad lands,

(02:51):
I can do it too. AndI ain't worried about getting twenty eight men.
You know what they say, Gordon, fools walk in where angels fear
to tread. Well, I food, and you're not an angel leader.
Well, one man got throw anothercan do the same thing. Maybe,
But remember Custer's horse had soldiers, men used to fighting, and they weren't
dragging women with them either. Alright, alright, whatever you need, just

(03:14):
a minute, I'd like to havea few words. Wait, sure,
missus tallants. I guess there ain'tany more for me to say. And
I say it for you, misterGordon. Jim what you said something about
dragging women along. Don't forget thatwomen went across the prairies all the way
into the California and they weren't draggedalong. They fought their way with the
men. Yeah, and I'm willingto do the same thing, and so

(03:37):
of the other women with it.Well, if a woman's gonna have that
much punk I guess I can't letmyself down by bagging out. I'll give
me that book this hard. Inspiredby the heroic example of any de Talent,

(03:58):
the band set out from Sussidio Offctobersixth, eighteen seventy four. Westward.
They headed across the trackless prairie. No one knew exactly what lay ahead,
but onward moved the six covered wagons. Then late October brought winter closer,
am icy winds, biting snow.By November it will be crossing the
bad Lands, a place of terrorand desolation in the weak winter. Finally,

(04:19):
when they reached the White River,Gordon called a halt. All right,
you stop here, get to thosewagons up ahead and tell them,
no hold on. What's the idea? Staff in Gordon? I have water,
Jim and I don't know. Wegotta have Gordon. This is getting
worse every minute, only because you'remaking it that way. Get everything out
of your wagons you don't need, and fill the space with ice. How

(04:41):
good ice, But I'm not onloadinganything from my wagons. I don't think
me and mind going on any further. I look up ahead there no ice
headland. I knew we'd come tothis. Gordon also trouble landy. You
know, we gotta chop ice toget water. And it's so aware of
belongings because if we don't, ifyou don't, you'll regreddit. Hell not

(05:04):
me, Well, missus tallant,I think this is the end. I
can't hold him anyway. Wait aminute, give me that axe. Give
me that ax here, Robert,Robert, tell you father to throw things
out of the wagon. Get somebuckets. Hey, look, missus town

(05:24):
allow me. Just because you gentlemendecide you don't want water, is no
reason why my family shouldn't have. What's the idea of telling Roberts, hey,
give me that axe. Want tokill your dog? Get yourself one
day? Everyone has to help.Well, Jim looks like a woman.
They showed you up again? Isthat so all? But get me an
ass? Once more, The dominantcourage of any Talent held the little band

crawled across the bad lands of thedakotas every last one except three of the
party cursed their leader. Those threewere Any Talent, her husband Dave,
and their little son Robert. Decembercame the coal grew more bitter, The
icy winds cut through even the heaviestof clothing. The food, always precious,

one bitter night, any Talent calledsoftly to her husband, wake up,

it would mean. They find outthere's sickness and camps, they get into
the panic, and then there'd beno holding them together at all. This

(07:20):
is a fight. We've got tofight alone. Tay. If we lose
rab to think about that day,we mustn't. There are plenty of candles
like them, and heat some waterin a pan. We can't build a
fire and let the others know howbadly off we are any day we come

Without alarming the rest of the party. Any Tallon and her husband David struggled
for the long night. The boyRobert recovered. While on and on,
with the band of pioneers deeper anddeeper into the bad land, the situation
grew worse. The faithful oxen, weary of the long trek, grew weak.
Their holds after days of pounding overice, snow, and rock were
worn to the quickness. Finally,in desperation, a little caravan halted.

(08:37):
He ain't no use these febborn critterswon't move out of their tracks. I'll
