LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - After more than three weeks of testimony, a jury has reached a verdict in the trial of Timothy Jones, Jr., a Lexington County man accused of murdering his five children in 2014.
The jury concluded that Jones has been found guilty on all five counts of murder in the deaths of his children.
The second phase of the proceedings is the sentencing phase and that will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday. Because the state is seeking the death penalty, the jury is now responsible for determining his punishment.
The jury had four options for their verdict: guilty, guilty but mentally ill, not guilty by reason of insanity, or not guilty. Jones pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
A grand jury indicted Jones, Jr. in 2014 on five counts of murder in the deaths of his children – Mera, 8; Elias, 7; Nahtahn, 6; Gabriel, 2; and Abigail, 1. For Mera, Elias, Gabriel, and Abigail, the indictments state the children were killed “by means of strangulation and/or other violent means or instruments.”

I just didn't know what was going on and I
was trying to make sense of it.

see any burnmarks in his body, so that's why I

The military said I was wrongly enlisted to due to
some mney listment. I fell on a depression.

Okay. Have you ever had any treatment or have you
ever been hospitalized for any of these issues?
Speaker 3 (36:16):
No? I fought it.

You fought it. Okay. Have you ever had a diagnosis? No? No.
Do you think you have a mental illness? I think
something's not right. I don't know what. I think I
may have some, not a some.

If I'm anything like my mom, Yeah, I got lots.

Oh gotcha? Were you drinking or using any drugs at
the time of the crime.

No, it was self medication afterwards.

It was the only thing we try to calm the
voices long enough for me to collect myself, and it
really didn't work because what I just did. Yeah, none,
nothing was working.

Were you drinking or using any drugs when you were arrested?
I think i'd been smoking schools, Scooby snacks.
Speaker 1 (37:01):

You have any illnesses, discal illnesses? So I'm just.

Telling you what I think based off of my experience.
I'm the type who doesn't really like to go to doctors,
which is a male thing.

Yeah, I think I got an ulcer, an ulcer, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
And the reason why it is because I get those
sulfur burps. They like eggs and I I don't know.
And then also some foods will just do a number
to my gut. I've been told I might have kolitis
or crones. My digest a tract sensitive. That's why you
don't see me eat much.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
I got you speaking eating. You still don't want any
thing to eat from the right now?
Speaker 3 (37:45):
No, I can't even know. As far as also, I
got issues with my back because I smashed my head
so young.
Speaker 1 (37:51):
I got stuff that's out of line, and I asked.
Speaker 3 (37:53):
Them to give me a They made me sleep on
that hard metal thing, and I asked them if I
could have a mattress because my.
Speaker 1 (37:59):
Stuff hurts, and I don't because they think I'm trying
to shining.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Mys with the mattress or something.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
You're talking about here, Yeah, yeah, okay, but sure you
say you're not suicidal at all.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
If I was gonna, if I was gonna do it, it
would have already happened. No, man, I'm not willing to
take that. I'll do a lot of stuff.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
But because you said your religious belief, taking my life
is not one of them. Because what happens, you say,
if you kill yourself, If you kill yourself, well maybe
nothing does happen.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
And maybe Lord, I love you. Maybe God's a myth
and we die and we go to the ground. But
if he's not and it's real, well, if it does
what it does, the hell's not a very fun place.
I don't think it plans on freezing over anytime soon.
I don't want to go there.

Were you taking any medications before you were arrested? I
don't think so.
Speaker 6 (38:48):
Okay, were you taking any medications at the time of
the crime.

I mean i'd be profen into proxim Okay, so of
those yet, but nothing like to me. That's all I had.

I don't know what the word fit means, but I
think I may have had some seizures, the non violent type.

Have you ever been knocked unconscious? Yes? Yes, if so?

Win, I mean, I grew up and as a young
teenager in Chicago, and I had to protect myself because
I'm white and most of those guys aren't white, and
they don't like me because my skin colored. You know
what that means.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
And you said earlier that you were not treated for
these injuries.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
I'm still and asked and don't go to the doctor
unless I need to.
Speaker 1 (39:51):

A couple of things I did want to go through
with you before. We had talked about when this happened.
The children, when this happened in the living room, you
were saying the bodies were on the ground, Yes, and
the other kids did they know what was coming?

I don't know. I mean they maybe they supposed. I
have no clue. I wasn't exactly in the state of
mind watching.
Speaker 1 (41:06):
Hey, he cared no, right, did they put up a fight?

I mean what normal humans not?

Okay, And I understand you're trying to tell me they did,
and what do you mean by that?

Though? They just they didn't want to go.

What do you mean they didn't want their lives taken?

Why didn't you get help before all this? You told
us you had thoughts about this. Why didn't you get help?

She didn't want them. She said that they couldn't come
with her if they had asked. The two of them
in a time of Mira, they had made a plot
and they originally got DSS involved in the attempt at
They were going to try to get theirselves taken out
of the house. So they made up a bunch of lies.
Is that the lady would say if you talk to her.
They made up some stuff. They weren't truly fund She
found out. She got to the bottom of it.
Speaker 1 (42:02):
But Tim, why why after.

Things happened with Natam, you're telling us that that was
not done intentionally.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
No, that was not done and done the other unintentionally
in the sense that I was trying to just get
answers out of him. Okay, wasn't I didn't go and
intentionally just go hurt him.

Why why not after you have plenty of time, you
have over a week's time, where those those children?

didn't usually I didn't think mom at all at that point.

get what I'm going to do done. And know I

follow up questions here. You mentioned the police officers you
spoke with last night. They could have done things a
little differently when they spoke to you. Can you just
tell us from your experience what you think they could
have done better?

Okay, so worst than what they did.

Let me share my experience with it. So I've done
time before, Okay, I don't.
Speaker 1 (45:21):
Know that it's it's yeah.

I've been put up there in a rubber room, no clothes,
no mattress, no nothing for the whole time. I asked
him for a blanket just to cover up because they
cut the shower off of me. I was using that
to keep warm. Yeah, I feel that they could have
gave me clothes, I said, if me at least something,
So there's I don't want to sound like I'm being nippicky.
I mean, not the person of being nippicky. But there's

metal that's rusting. I told them, guys, that produces tetanus.
I don't want to get tetanus. And they don't care.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
You say, if I'm lay in that and you can
see the paint was yeah.
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Look, so there's the paint from them.
Speaker 1 (45:58):
That's just one. If I pull this enough, you're probably
gonna find pieces on my back. Yeah, that's the paint.
Speaker 3 (46:05):
Well, there's also rusted metal, and I'm afraid I'm gonna
get tenus.
Speaker 1 (46:08):
But they won't give me any blanket or any mattress.
Well what about the interview yesterday though? That's so.

The reason I stipped on those guys is because I
don't know. They don't talk the way you do. There's
something about your approach that makes it very easy to
speak to you.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
There, you weren't. There was no offense.
Speaker 3 (46:27):
You're intimidating the hell you're an FBI agent. I'm not,
so I have to talk to you. To me, you're
here and I'm wait on here and you're gonna crush me.
You're the FBI. I'm just a nobody.

this thing, and I appreciate you. Is there anything we
could have done better in how we what we all
talked about this evening?
